Brainwashed [Digipak]
Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, dobro, ukulele); Isabela Borzymowska (spoken vocals); Jeff Lynne (acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, piano, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, bass, background vocals); Dhani Harrison (acoustic & electric guitars, Wurlitzer piano, background vocals); Jane Lister (harp); Jools Holland, Jon Lord (piano); Mike Moran, Marc Mann (keyboards); Jim Keltner (drums); Bikram Ghosh (tabla); SamBrown (background vocals). Producers: George Harrison, Dhani Harrison, Jeff Lynne. BRAIN WASHED may be the posthumous successor to 1987's CLOUD NINE, but the 15 years George Harrison took to put this collection of songs together was time well spent. Featuring a small group of musicians including son Dhani, fellow Wilbury Jeff Lynne, and Jools Holland, Harrison's last legacy showcases some of his finest playing wrapped around the kind of weighty topics expected from someone with terminal cancer. Introspective without being the least beat mawkish, the ex-Beatle touches on the metaphoric wonders of dawn ("Rising Sun"), his inevitable demise ("Looking For My Life"), and a fond look back at a former lover ("Never Get Over You"). Lynne's production steers clear of its usual heavy-handed tendencies and instead allows Harrison's playing to shine and come to the fore on cuts like the crying instrumental "Marwa Blues" and the slide guitar-fueled sweetness of "Rocking Chair in Hawaii." The late great one even snags a ukulele and delivers a light and easy version of the standard "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." Appropriately enough, Harrison's interest in Eastern religious thought finds its place in the album-ending title track via a reading from the Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali, lending a fitting epilogue to the last new work from the Quiet Beatle. Lift Every Voice And Sing [Remastered]
Personnel: Max Roach (drums); The J.C. White Singers, Ruby McClure, J.C. White, Dorothy White (vocals); Billy Harper (tenor saxophone); Cecil Bridgewater (trumpet); George Cables (piano); Eddie Mathias (electric bass); Ralph McDonald (percussion). Producer: Joel Dorn. Reissue producers: Donald Elfman, Naomi Yoshi. Recorded a Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, New York on April 7 & 8, 1971. Originally released on Atlantic (LP 1587). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and James Weldon Johnson. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. An album rooted in black America's plight, 1971's LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING revolves around African American spirituals and the soulful, often bluesy jazz stylings of drummer Max Roach's sextet. Mirroring the strugglefor equality, this album celebrates black resilience against the backdrop of oppression and racism. Roach and his group accompany a gospel choir, under the direction of singer J. C. White. Five of the six selections heard here are traditional, including "Troubled Waters," "Let Thy People Go," "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord," "Joshua," and the famous "Motherless Child." However, the album's highlight may be Patricia Curtis and Max Roach's composition "Garden of Prayer," a slow groove that features the wonderful singing of J. C. White himself. LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING reminds us of America's dark past while giving us cause to consider a more hopeful future. SKU: 5030895

Tomorrow's Sounds Today
Personnel: Dwight Yoakam (vocals, acoustic guitar); Buck Owens (vocals); Al Bonhomme (acoustic guitar); Pete Anderson (electric guitar, percussion); Gary Morse (lap & pedal steel guitars); Chris Hillman (mandolin); Scott Joss, Don Reed (fiddle); Flaco Jimenez (accordion); Skip Edwards (keyboards); Taras Prodaniuk (bass); Jim Christie (drums); Jonathan Clark, Jim Lauderdale (backgroundvocals). Principally recorded ar The Dog Bone Studios, Burbank, California. In-between directing a film, maintaining an acting career, launching his own website, and touring in support of the solo CD set DWIGHTYOAKAMACOUSTIC.NET, it's downright remarkable that Dwight Yoakam found the time to record TOMMOROW'S SOUNDS TODAY before 2000 ended. Despite all this activity, Yoakam's production partner/guitarist Pete Anderson came up with another outing that bucks Music Row trends while honoring country music's past without becoming nostalgic. Throughout TOMORROW'S SOUNDS, Dwight Yoakam's rich tenor gets put to great use on songs like the Buddy Holly-inspired "Dreams of Clay" and the gritty honky-tonk of "A Place to Cry." Backed by a crack band featuring the distinctive contributions of fiddler Scott Joss and steel guitarist Gary Morse, Yoakam also impresses with tear-in-your beer laments like the seasonally themed "Time Spent Missing You" (featuring former Byrd Chris Hillman on mandolin) and the Hank Williams-flavored "The Heartaches Are Free." Highlights include a brilliant cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" in which Yoakam applies a twangy sheen to this warhorse without killing the song's spirit, and a pair of bonus Buck Owens duets. Wolfie The Coat And The Hat
Wolfie: Joe Ziemba (vocals, guitar, bass); Mike Downey (vocals, guitar); Amanda Lyons (vocals, piano, organ); RJ Porter (drums). The six song EP WOLFIE AND THE COAT AND HAT, the band's third release after 1997's AWFUL MESS MYSTERY and 1999's WHERE'S WOLFIE, is a good, if mildly generic album. Geek-pop is a style Wolfie does well--high-pitched, slightly strangled male vocals with occasional female backing vocals (keyboardist Amanda Lyons has a much better voice than either Ziemba or primary vocalist Mike Downey, and the band would do well to feature her more), politely distorted guitars, and mildly depressive lyrics set to scratchily engaging melodies. The backwards-tape effects in the closing "Two Birds" and the multi-part structure of the EP's best song, "It's Hard Luck Being Me," keep the songs from sounding toosimilar. Fans of the Promise Ring or other emo-pop bands will find Wolfie diverting. SKU: 1035363

Run Devil Run
Personnel: Paul McCartney (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, bass, percussion); David Gilmour (electric & lap steel guitar, background vocals); Mick Green (electric guitar); Chris Hall (accordion); Pete Wingfield (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond organ); Geraint Watkins (piano, Wurlitzer piano); Dave Mattacks, Ian Paice (drums, percussion). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England from March 1-May 5, 1999. Includes liner notes by Paul McCartney. After decades spent making lush, carefully crafted pop records, Paul McCartney makes a joyous return tohis roots with RUN DEVIL RUN. On this album, McCartney returns to the music that first inspired him to become a musician--early rock & roll, rockabilly, and R&B. Much as Bob Dylan journeyed back to his folk roots and invested them with new resonance on WORLD GONE WRONG, McCartney attacks the material here with freshness and vitality. The opener, Gene Vincent's "Blue Jean Bop," is a perfect recreation of the vintage '50s rockabilly sound. The rest of McCartney's covers, including Carl Perkins' "Movie Magg" and Johnny Burnette's "Honey Hush" sidestep nostalgia in favor of the kind of raw, unfettered approach that made rock & roll exciting to begin with. A couple of McCartney originals, including the title tune, mine a similar late-'50s lode to fine effect. Despite the presence of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Deep Purple's Ian Paice, RUN DEVIL RUN is no leaden arena-rock stab at rockabilly. Recorded in just a week, it's a fevered, energetic slab of real rock & roll, full of grit and soul. SKU: 1041448

Best Of Johnny Winter, The
Personnel includes: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, mandolin, harp); Rick Derringer (vocals, guitar); Randy Jo Hobbs (vocals, bass); Bobby Caldwell (percussion). Producers: Rick Derringer, Johnny Winter. Compilation producer: Lawrence Cohn. Includes liner notes Lawrence Cohn. After decades in the music business, the blues-fueled rock & roll of guitar great Johnny Winter can still cause a commotion. This retrospectiveon the early career of the albino blues master showcases some of the flashiest guitar chops ever recorded. From the extended dual guitar leads on live tracks like "It's My Own Fault" and "Mean Town Blues" to the slide-guitar mania of "I'm Yours and I'm Hers," Winter dazzles the listener with his well-honed craft. A solid mixture of original tunes and interesting covers, this 16-track disc expresses the diversity present in all of Winter's music. His love for soul is visible in his gritty, emotional voice ("Miss Ann") while his more straightforward rock tendencies find just as strong an outlet ("Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo"). For fans of good ol' rock & roll from the days when blues made it's way into all sorts of music, this disc will not disappoint. SKU: 1073328

X
The title "X" represents the roman numeral "10" for the 10th anniversary of INXS' first album. INXS: Michael Hutchence (vocals); Kirk Pengilly (guitar, saxophone, background vocals); Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar); John Farriss (keyboards, drums); Garry Gary Beers (bass). Additional personnel: Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica). Recorded at Rhinoceros Studios, Sydney, Australia. Originally released on Atlantic (82140). Includes liner notes by Chris Thomas. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Following up an album as huge-selling and pop-culturally omnipresent as INXS's 1987 breakthrough KICK was a daunting proposition. But, possibly because mostof KICK's best moments were killed by overexposure, X stands the test of time better than its predecessor. Opening with the hypnotic, twitchy "Suicide Blonde," one of the band's finest singles, X careens through 11 unpretentious Stones-meet-techno dance-rock tracks, including the fine rocker "Disappear" and the impressive, emotional ballad "Bitter Tears." While INXS should be applauded simply for not making KICK PART II, X is a great album in its own right. SKU: 1011420

Love Songs For Patriots
American Music Club: Dan Pearson (vocals, guitar, mandolin, bass guitar, percussion); Mark Eitzel (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Vudi (guitar, lap steel guitar, piano, organ); Tim Mooney (keyboards, drums, timpani, percussion). Additional personnel: Marc Capelle (trumpet, piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Jason Borger (piano). Recording information: Closer Studio, San Francisco, California (10/2003 - 03/2004). While San Francisco's American Music Club was one of the finest, most idiosyncratic alt-rock bands of the 1990s (not to mention '80s), their permanent cult status and interpersonal volatility brought about the group's end in the mid-'90s. Singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel and other members pursued various solo projects, but could never equal the tragic majesty of AMC's sad-and-beautiful oeuvre. The band's eventual reunion resulted in 2004's LOVE SONGS FOR PATRIOTS, a comeback album stronger than fans might have dared to hope. Vudi's twisted, barbed-wire guitarscapes twirl with brutal elegance around Eitzel's tortured croon and sarcastic-but-poetic lyrics. While the former kings of misery (once termed the American Smiths) are still not exactly gleeful-sounding here, the self-loathing and romantic desolation of old has been partially supplanted by a new degree of sociopolitically motivated invective, presumably in reaction to post-9/11 life in the US. Former AMC keyboardist/pedal steel guitarist Bruce Kaphan's lush textures are missed, but new memberMarc Capelle does an admirable job in his stead, and the rest of the band locks in together in the agreeably spiky, subtly disconsolate manner that was always a huge part of their appeal. My Private Nation
Train: Pat Monahan (vocals, percussion); Rob Hotchkiss (guitar, piano, bass, background vocals); Charlie Colin (guitar, bass, background vocals); Jimmy Stafford (guitar). Additional personnel includes: Brendan O'Brien (guitar, piano, keyboards, organ, marxophone, percussion, background vocals); Soozie Tyrell (violin); Pam Goldsmith (viola); Larry Corbett, Jane Scarpantoni (cello). Recorded at Southern Tracks Recording, Atlanta, Georgia. After scoring a big hit with "Drops of Jupiter" in 2001, Train continues to shoot for the pop-rock brass ring on their 2003 follow-up. MY PRIVATE NATION is full of grandlyunspooling major-key melodies, big guitars with grand-canyon reverb, and a widescreen production approach that simultaneously gets the maximum rock punch and pop appeal out of every song. Without incorporating any overt roots elements such as alt-country of folk-rock tropes, Train still manages to sound overwhelmingly American and rootsy. Stylistically, their affinity is seemingly more with Counting Crows or the Wallflowers than with Wilco or the Jayhawks, but you can still see amber waves of grain unfolding before your eyes as MY PRIVATE NATION spreads its sonic wings. Rust Never Sleeps
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Frank Sampedro (guitar); Billy Talbot (bass); Ralph Molina (drums). Additional personnel: Nicolette Larson (vocals); Joe Osborne, Carl Himmel. Producers: Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Tim Mulligan, David Briggs.
As far as pure songcraft goes, it hard to beat this 1979 offering from Young & Crazy Horse. By the end of the '90s, Young, Talbot, Molina and Sampredo had refined their crushing sonic assault to the extent that they could bludgeon the listener with Wagnerian riffs and rhythms (the entropy hymn "Hey Hey, My My") or provide just enough grit to keep Young's far-out lyrics from ascending into the stratosphere ("Ride My Llama.") Songwise, RUST is a schizophrenic album. Young moves from the brilliant surrealist imagery of "Pocahontas," with it's evocation of "Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me," to the sharp narrative perspective of the equally transcendent "Powderfinger" and the good-humored social commentary of "Welfare Mothers." Live
Sunny Day Real Estate: Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar); Dan Hoerner (guitar, background vocals); Joe Skyward (bass, background vocals); William Goldsmith (drums). Recorded live in Eugene, Oregon on May 26, 1999. It's hard to explain just what makes Sunny Day Real Estate such an appealing live band, but anyone who has attended one of the group's thunderous shows could account for why there had been a clamor among fans for a live album ever since the band's classic 1994 debut, DIARY. LIVE followed three studio albums, a breakup, a reunion, and the replacement of the band's original bassist. LIVE was recorded in Eugene, Oregon on May 26, 1999. Its 11 tracks demonstrate a perfect balance between the group's escalating and receding melodic guitars and the tenderly ferocious vocals of Jeremy Enigk. There is a relatively even representation of material from the group's three albums, with a predictable focus on the post-reunion HOW IT FEELS TO BE SOMETHING ON. While it would be nice to hear live renditions of some of the group's early numbered songs, that's just wishful thinking; LIVE boasts a nearlyperfect set list, from the pleadingly beautiful opener, "Pillars," to the tender finale, "Days Were Golden." The between-song banter to the crowd, like the band's music, is endearingly sincere. Perhaps it is this sincerity that makes Sunny Day Real Estate such a galvanic live act. SKU: 1044183

Always Got Tonight
Personnel includes: Chirs Isaak (vocals); Patrick Warren, Jamie Muhoberac, John Shanks, Abraham Laboriel Jr., Steve Ferrone, Lenny Castro, Paul Bushnell, James Pugh, Matt Eakle. Silvertone: Kenney Dale Johnson, Rowland Salley, Hershel Yatovitz. Engineers include: Lars Fox, Marc Desisto, Mark Needham. A supremely consistent performer, Chris Isaak can be counted upon to deliver the goods onevery album. Since his 1985 debut SILVERTONE, the Bay Area native has kept to a reliable formula of tremolo guitars, echo-drenched Spectoresque production (more "You're Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" than "Be My Baby"), and a remarkable voice triangulated somewhere between Roy Orbison and Johnny Rivers. ALWAYS GOT TONIGHT continues the trend of Isaak's late-'90s albums in keeping a period ambience without sounding too slavishly retro. In fact, it does a better job than 1998's SPEAK OF THE DEVIL of integrating subtle contemporary touches into the timeless songs; the stuttering title track and "Notice the Ring" sound like Beck collaborating with Ricky Nelson. Elsewere, other songs hew closer to the "Wicked Game" template, especially the downright mournful closer "Nothing To Say." Fans pulled in by Isaak's cult-favorite TV show will be happy that the show's almost Byrdsy, ironically upbeat theme song "American Boy" is among these dozen songs, but longtime fans of Isaak's inimitable sound shouldn't be put off by the album's somewhat more modern feel. Stoned And Dethroned
Personnel: William Reid (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Jim Reid (vocals, guitar, bass, percussion); Ben Lurie (guitar, harmonica, organ, bass); Steve Monti (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Shane MacGowan, Hope Sandoval (vocals). All songs written by members of Jesus & Mary Chain. Since 1985, Glasgow brothers William and Jim Reid (aka The Jesus & Mary Chain) have immersed themselves in a wash of pop references as akin to Lou Reed's TRANSFORMER as to the Beach Boys' earliest singles. While more subdued, andpainted in acoustic strokes, Jesus & Mary Chain's newest effort STONED & DETHRONED continues the band's mutation of pop's melodic sense. STONED & DETHRONED is a step in a new direction for the Reids. Much of their early material seemed like a mixture of conflicting eras, bubblegum harmonies layered on top of impossible distorted guitar. Now with STONED & DETHRONED, The Jesus & Mary Chain have honed their erratic opposing sides into a cleaner, more focused sound. Relying more on acoustics and softer production, the album sounds aimed at the MTV "Unplugged" audience, but proves the Jesus & Mary Chain adept in the power of quiet as well as the joy of distortion. Day I Forgot [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include a nine minute "Making Of" video. Personnel: Pete Yorn (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass, drums); Ken Andrews (electric guitar, E-Bow, synthesizer, bass, programming); background vocals); R. Walt Vincent (guitar, harmonica, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, Mellotron, xylophone, programming); Joe Kennedy, Brad Wood (electric guitar); Jeff Garber (slide guitar); Charlotte Martin (piano); Jeff Garber (synthesizer); Justin Meldal-Johnsen (upright bass); Josh Freese, Tim Dow (drums); Brad Wood (putney, percussion). Producers: Scott Litt, R. Walt Vincent, Pete Yom, Ken Andrews. Principally recorded at Mesmer Proper Studios, Culver City, California. DAY I FORGOT picks up on the promise of singer/songwriter Pete Yorn's debut MUSICFORTHEMORNINGAFTER with its 14 self-penned songs. The New Jersey native goes from channeling a Led Zeppelin vibe (the stomper "Carlos [Don't Let It Go to Your Head]") andtossing around a Johnny Marr-ish jangle (a jaunty "Come Back Home") to pulling off a credible waltz inspired by Baz Luhrmann ("Turn of the Century"). Despite being hung with the introspective singer/songwriter label, Yorn manages to avoid becoming another morose balladeer, and instead has fun reminiscing about teen love (the power-poppy "Burrito") and the vulnerable early stages of a relationship (a guitar-fueled "Crystal Village"). Yorn also shines when he touches on the mind-numbing routine that everyday life can become (a chiming "Man in Uniform") and taking to task someone who tossed aside a loving relationship (the off-kilter "When You See Light"). With DAY I FORGOT, Yorn has once again penned a passel of songs not soon to fade from memory. SKU: 1086808

Selected Recordings
Personnel: Bill Frisell (banjo, synthesizer, acoustic & electric guitars); Jan Garbarek, John Surman (soprano saxophone); Billy Drewes, Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, cornet); Bob Stewart (tuba); Hank Roberts (cello); Kermit Driscoll, Ed Schuller, Eberhard Weber, Dave Holland (bass); Jerome Harris (electric bass); Paul Motian, Michael DiPasqua (drums, percussion); Joey Barron (drums); Gavin Bryars Ensemble. Recorded between 1981 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Bill Frisell. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of ECM Records "Rarum" series. Sharing its title with other collections in this ECM series, this set offers selections featuring guitarist and composer Bill Frisell appearing both as leader and sideman. Itdocuments a startlingly broad range of music from his own boisterous and gleeful horn-infused "Resistor" to the quietly regal "Mandeville" recorded with Paul Motian's band. There's the icy northern serenity of "Singsong" recorded with the Jan Garbarek Group and the mournful lilt of Frisell's own "Alien Prints." While Frisell went on to create a rich catalog with Nonesuch Records, his work with the ECM label finds him eager to experiment-a trait he's carried throughout his career. He's a sympathetic improviser able to let loose both large sheets of sound and beautifully whispered passages from his guitars. The booklet includes his own notes on the pieces and about his collaborators. SKU: 1072508

"Essential" collection from staunch left-wing punk-folk stalwart well known for his support of trade unions and anti-racist groups. Whilst none of these songs can really be called a "hit" - except 'A New England' which was a top ten single for Kirsty MacColl - this presents a selection of his best tracks including 'Sexuality', 'The Saturday Boy', 'Moving The Goalposts', 'Help Save The Youth Of America', 'The World Turned Upside Down' and the vitriolic'Take Down The Union Jack'.
