American Tune
Personnel: Eva Cassidy (vocals, acoustic guitar); Keith Grimes (electric guitar); Marcy Marxer (guitar, bouzouki, whistle); Lenny Williams (piano, organ); Chris Biondo (bass); Raice McLeod (drums). Recorded between 1989 & 1995. Includes liner notes by Martin Jennings. After seven posthumously released and well-received records, the tragic story of Eva Cassidy has passed into the realm of cult legend. The notoriously shy D.C.-area performer with the most powerfully gentle voice could render any song, no matter how well-known, no matter how frequently turned to by other singers, into her own. In fact, this eighth release, AMERICAN TUNE, contains a reworking of perhaps the most covered song of all time, the Lennon-McCartney ballad "Yesterday," and despite thousands of versions, she discovered a new interpretation hidden within the folds of the familiar. At this point, it's practically impossible to disassociate "God Bless The Child" from Billie Holiday's original, and many have added their own takes, but Cassidy's voice earnestly and artfully rolls over the tune and a new angle emerges. Most remarkable about AMERICAN TUNE is despite the diversityof the sources, her voice forges a discernable, undeniable thread between songs; Cassidy is as comfortable with soul as traditional folk, pop as jazz, and her irreplaceable voice could wrap around just about any song. Usually, by this point, the well of a talent that passed so young would have long been tapped, but Cassidy proves so strong that her music seems inexhaustable, and AMERICAN TUNE rises far above pastiche into a stunning, consistent album of its own. Bongo Fury
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar, vocals); Don "Captain Beefheart" Van Vliet (vocals, harmonica); Denny Walley (slide guitar, vocals); Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophone, vocals); Bruce Fowler (trombone); George Duke (keyboards, vocals); Terry Bozzio, Chester Thompson (drums). Engineers: Kerry McNab, Mike Braunstein, Kelly Kotera, Mike Stone, Davey Moire, Frank Hubach. BONGO FURY was recorded live at Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin, Texas on May 20-21, 1975. "200 Years," "Cucamonga" and the introduction to "Muffin Man" were recorded at The Record Plant in Los Angeles, California in January-February 1974. Digitally remastered by Bob Stone in 1987. Zappa and Beefheart were birds of a feather. Though each was fiercely individualistic, idiosyncratic and uncompromising, they both followed their own path of sophisticated wierdness so far that each was probably the onlyartist the other could relate to in terms of peerage. The pair had collaborated here and there many times, but BONGO FURY is their only album-length effort. Recorded at a 1975 Austin concert, this is essentially a Zappa program, with Beefheart sitting in (Zappa's monstrously talented mid-'70s band featuring Terry Bozzio and George Duke provides accompaniment). Beefheart is incapable of making a passive guest appearance, though, and his rugged, blues werewolf growl dominates the proceedings every time it appears. Compositionally, Beefheart contributes only a couple of brief tracks, but he meshes well with Zappa's arrangements and compositions. BONGO FURY is a classic example of succesful collaboration; Beefheart's rawness is contrasted nicely by Zappa and company's technical facility, and Zappa's refined style is given some grit by the good Captain. I Looked Up
The Incredible String Band includes: Robin Wiliamson, Mike Heron. On album number seven from the Incredible String Band, the two different directions of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson are more audible. Williamson wrote only two songs for this album, both just under eleven minutes each. The band's next few albums would explore longer pieces with subtle shifts, based partially on world music and mysticism. This would then give way to relatively straight-ahead pop songs towards the end of their career. However, when Heronand Williamson's interests intersected, as they did on the closing "Fair As You," they could be a positively magical quartet, sounding like no one else at all. SKU: 1073484

Le Parc [Remastered]
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese, C. Franke, J. Schmoelling. Additional personnel: Clare Torry, Katja Brauneis (vocals); Robert Kastler (trumpet). Producers: Chris Franke, Edgar Froese, Johannes Schmoelling. Recorded at Eastgate Studios, Vienna, Austria; Dream Studios, Berlin, Germany; Battery Studios, London, England in 1985. Includes liner notes by Paul Russell. LE PARC marked yet another new era for the constantly evolving Tangerine Dream, with shorter songs and the use of sampling technology to fill out the already opulent sound. Fresh off a string of highly acclaimed film soundtracks, the Froese/Franke/Schmoelling lineup came up with nine tightly constructed numbers that reflect a pop consciousness without betraying the band's signature sound. Each composition on the record honors a famous city garden orpark. The second track, a propulsive paean to New York's Central Park, features insistent percussion that mimics the rhythms of the city's street drummers. "Gaudi Park" mirrors the pretty whimsicality of Barcelona's Guell Garden. "Zen Garden," a tribute to the Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto, is as stark and deep as the title suggests. Tangerine Dream had something of a hit with the title track, the theme song for the short-lived TV drama "Street Hawk." Overall, LE PARC is one of the band's more accessible records. SKU: 1081209

Hex Enduction Hour
The Fall: Craig Scanlon (vocals, guitar, piano); Mark E. Smith (vocals guitar, tapes); Steve Hanley (vocals, bass); Karl Burns (vocals, drums, tapes); Kay Carroll (vocals, percussion); Marc Riley (guitar, electric piano, organ); Paul Hanley (guitar, drums). Seminal British post-punks the Fall have been through so many stylistic and personnel changes that it's easy to forget the unadulterated fury that marked the band's early recordings. HEX INDUCTION HOUR features the classic late-'70s lineup, fullof scratchy, occasionally discordant guitars, forcefully spastic rhythms and Mark E. Smith's trademark rants that combine the punk aesthetic with unfettered beat poetry. Smith's narratives are often difficult to follow, but like much great poetry, it's the gestalt that matters most. HEX ENDUCTION HOUR features some of the best-known songs from the Fall's early period, including low-key 6/8 "Hip Priest" and the roaring "The Classical," making it a must-have for fans of the group's punkier side. And Justice For All
Full title: ...And Justice For All. Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at One To One Studio, Los Angeles, California between January & May 1988. Following the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, Metallica regrouped with Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted to record this ambitious double album. Metallica made their reputation playing complex music at superhuman speed, and when James Hetfield's lyrics caught up with his compositional skills, the band became a force to be reckoned with. Everything came together on 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS, and JUSTICE picks up where PUPPETS left off. Utilizing intricate yet crunching riffs, layered guitar melodies and intelligent lyrics, Metallica forged an identity as the leader of '80s metal. Hetfield's lyrics are often quite dark, touching on injustice (the title song), insanity ("The Frayed Ends Of Sanity") and his own troubled childhood ("Dyers Eve"). They also had a progressive streak a mile wide, as shown in the involved arrangements that often brought the song lengths close to 10 minutes. JUSTICE also marked a turning point for drummer Lars Ulrich, who began replacing his off-kilter playing with a more straightforward groove approach, and for the band, who made their first video (for"One") and thus scored their first hit. Things Falling Apart
Things Falling Apart contains various manipulations of songs recorded from the Fragile sessions. Nine Inch Nails: Trent Raznor (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Steve Hokel (violin); Marc Paradis (cello); TelefonTel Aviv (programming). Producers: Adrian Sherwood, Mark Stewart, Joshua Eustis, Turk Dietrich, Charles Cooper. The best words to describe the music of Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails are caustic and scathing. Billed as manipulations of songs recorded during THE FRAGILE sessions, THINGS FALLING APART stands on its own as a solid release. The remixes are so drastic that they become separate entities from their distant origins. Long-time collaborators such as Alan Moulder, Charlie Clouser (now a full-fledged member of Nine Inch Nails), and Dave Ogilvie were recruited to flesh out the new instrumentation, while Danny Lohner, Keith Hillebrandt, and Adrian Sherwood master the control boards. The result is a swirling mix of synth-pop, crunchy guitar riffs, and ambient, archaic soundscapes. From the haunting strings in Bellini's version of "The Frail" to the pulsating Sherwood remix of "Starfuckers, Inc.," this collection aims for the deepest recesses of the human soul. A DVD containing live footage and videos is also available. SKU: 1045899

Yeah, we know, it's the soundtrack to another Tom Cruise movie, where America's favorite leading man plays another lovable mug who gets the girl, the glory and, of course, the money. But wait, don't run away yet! The movie was directed by former rock critic Cameron Crowe (he also directed "Singles"), and the songs he gathered togetherfor it amount to an impressive portrait of the crises of character that Cruise's sports-agent hero goes through in the course of the movie. They also make for one of the smartest compilations of adult rock hits and album tracks you're likely to find anywhere. Starting at the end, the album closes with an alternate version of Bob Dylan's classic "Shelter From The Storm." For Dylan fans, no other information is necessary. For the rest of you, consider this: Where else can you get Neil Young's "World On A String," Bruce Springsteen's "Secret Garden" and Nancy Wilson's "Sandy" on one album? To round things out, there are tracks from talented upstarts His Name Is Alive and power-pop diva Aimee Mann. SKU: 1000702

Truth Be Told
Blues Traveler: John Popper (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Chandler Kinchla (guitar); Tad Kinchla (banjo, bass); Ben Wilson (organ, keyboards); Brendan Hill (drums, percussion). Recorded at Sound Design, Santa Barbara, California. In the wake of bassist Bobby Sheehan's death, Blues Traveler could have either fallen apart or gotten stronger. In the work they've done since that tragic occurrence, they've taken the latter path. Their second post-Sheehan album, TRUTH BE TOLD, doesn't diverge sharply from the band's past; the slowly unfolding, folk-rock tinged feel of the stately, melodic "Sweet and Broken" and the bluesy, groove-based angularity of "Can't See Why" are of a piece with the main body of the group's work. But there are changes as well; new keyboard player Ben Wilson's hearty organ and piano contributions are the most obvious sign of expansion, but it's in the songwriting as well. The opener "Unable to Get Free," for instance, suggests (roughly) a testosterone-injected version of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," and the soul/rock/funk/jazz mixture of the syncopated "MyBlessed Pain" finds the band unafraid to mix and match musical styles at will. The combination of consistency and adventurousness serves Blues Traveler well in their second decade as recording artists. SKU: 1085328

This One's For You [Remastered]
Personnel: Barry Manilow (vocals, piano); Ron Dante (vocals, guitar); Richard Resnicoff, Dennis Farac, David Spinoza, Gerry Friedman (guitar); Alan Axelrod, Paul Shaffer (keyboards); Steven Donaghey, Will Lee (bass); Lee Gurst, Ron Zito (drums); Monica Burruss, Debra Byrd, Reparata (background vocals). Recorded At Mediasound, New York, New York. One of the cornerstones upon which Manilow's career was built, THIS ONE'S FOR YOU shows off both Manilow's compositional acumen and his casual, guy-next-door way with a song. He was always the master of Big Arrangements, especially in his '70s heyday, and the title trackbears this out, starting with simple piano-based accompaniment to a solitary-sounding, contemplative vocal and gradually building to the kind of pop crescendo that is Manilow's stock in trade. The same device is employed, though to a more celebratory effect, on "Looks Like We Made It." The uptempo "Riders To The Stars" gives us a glimpse of showbiz Barry, who sounds here like he'd be equally at home in a recording studio or on a Vegas stage surrounded by dancing girls and colored lights. In contrast, "Weekend in New England" is a poignant ballad full of longing. THIS ONE'S FOR YOU is an essential item in the Manilow canon, representing several sides of the singer's talent. Ella/Things Ain't What They Used To Be
Full title: Ella/Things Ain't What They Used To Be (And You Better Believe It). 2 LPs on 1 CD: ELLA andTHINGS AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE (AND YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT. Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Henry De Vega (alto saxophone); Harold Land, Ray Bojorquez (tenor saxophone); Richard Aplenalp (baritone saxophone); Ernest Watts, Anthony Ortega, William Green (flute, piccolo); Marshall Royal (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone); Bobby Bryant, Larry McGuire, Alex Rodriguez, Paul Hubinon, Harry Edison (trumpet); J.J Johnson, James Cleveland, Mike Wimberly, Britt Woodman, William Tole, Alexander Thomas, Thurman Green (trombone); Arthur Maebe (French horn, tubing); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Joe Sample (electric piano, organ); Vic Feldman, Bobby Hutcherson (vibes); Herb Ellis, Dennis Budmamir (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Louis Bellson (drums); Modesto Duran, Francisco DeSouza (bongos, congas). Recorded live at Olympic Sound Studios, London, May 26, 28, 29, 30, 1969. Made up of two late-'60s LPs, this 22-track disc is a wonderful oddity in Ella Fitzgerald's career. Recorded in 1969, live in London's Olympic Sound Studio with pop wunderkind Richard Perry producing, ELLA was Fitzgerald's attempt at a rock & roll album. (Remember, jazz-rock fusion was very big at the time.) The results are more Blood Sweat and Tears than BITCHES BREW, but that's no bad thing. The songs are mostly quite strong, and unlike most jazz singers who tackle rock, Fitzgerald never condescends to her material. As a result, her versions of Motown standards "Get Ready," "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game," and "Ooo Baby Baby"; Beatles tunes "Savoy Truffle" and "Got to Get You Into My Life"; and most bizarrely, Randy Newman's "Yellow Man," are surprisingly durable. The more jazz-oriented second album still focuses on pop tunes, with more variable but often exceptional results. SKU: 1045994

Closer To You
Personnel: J.J. Cale (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Christine Lakeland (guitar, background vocals); Don Preston (guitar); Sid Page, Doug Atwell (violin); Marcy Dicterow-Vaj (viola); Nancy Stein (cello); Garth Hudson (accordion); Lee Allen (saxophone); Steve Madaio (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); Bill Payne (piano, organ); Spooner Oldham (organ); Larry Taylor (acoustic bass); Tim Drummond (bass); James Cruce, Jim Keltner (drums); Jim Karstein (drums, percussion); Leslie Taylor (background vocals). Engineers: Charlie Paakkari, J.J. Cale. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California. On the two albums that preceded CLOSER TO YOU, TRAVEL LOG and NUMBER 10, J.J. Cale adopted a more basic musical approach. This album continues the trend. Cale plays a few songs alone (though the overdubbed parts sound remarkably spare), including the title track. "Closer to You" finds him electronically treatinghis vocals, a technique that surprisingly makes him sound as down-to-earth as ever. The set ends with the hypnotically grooving instrumental "Steve's Song." The set is bolstered by two bass players (electric and acoustic), three percussionists (including Jim Keltner), three guitarists (including Cale), two keyboardists (Spooner Oldham and Bill Payne), and three horn players. With the dazzling CLOSER TO YOU, J.J. Cale finds ever-newer surprises in his own remarkable corner of the musical world. SKU: 1006545

Best Of Carly Simon, The
Personnel includes: Carly Simon (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); James Taylor, Carole King (vocals); Jim Ryan (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Paul Keough (acoustic guitar); Robbie Robertson, Andrew Gold (guitar); Bobby Keys (tenor & baritone saxophones); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Dr. John (piano, organ); Paul Griffin, Paul Glanz, Nicky Hopkins (piano); Tony Levin, Klaus Voorman, Willie Weeks (bass); Andy Newmark (drums, percussion); Jimmy Johnson, Jim Keltner, Jim Gordon (drums); Ray Cooper, Eddie Bongo (congas); Ralph McDonald, Richard Perry (percussion); Mick Jagger, Liza Strike,Vicki Brown, Carl Hall, Tasha Thomas, Lani Groves, Bonnie Bramlett, Doris Troy, Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney (background vocals). Producers: Eddie Kramer, Richard Perry, Paul Samwell-Smith. The first and still the best of the many Carly Simon compilations available, 1975's THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON is an all-meat, no-filler collection of most of the folk-pop singer/songwriter's best and biggest songs. Looking over the track listing, one is reminded of just how many classic songs Simon was responsible for in the early '70s. "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be," "The Right Thing to Do," "Haven't Got Time For the Pain," "Anticipation," and of course "You're So Vain" still sound remarkably solid. This is particularly impressive considering the amount of radio time they've all gotten in the intervening decades. Simon's husky voice and smart, piano-based arrangements don't sound nearly as dated as those of many of her contemporaries, and while THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON may qualify as a guilty pleasure in some minds, it's a pleasure nonetheless. Ocean Beach
Red House Painters: Mark Kozelek (vocals, guitar, piano); Gorden Mack (guitar); Jerry Vessel (bass); Anthony Koutsos (drums). Additional personnel: Dan Barbee, Carrie Bradley. Recorded at Coast Recorders, Hyde Street Studios and David Wellhousen's Studio, San Francisco, California. Like much of the Red House Painters' work, OCEAN BEACH is marked by an overriding sense of despair, but Mark Kozelek, the Painters' founder and guiding force, has a way of transforming his melancholia into seduction. The record begins on the lightest of notes with "Cabezon," a languid instrumental that would sound appropriate as the opening theme for akids' TV show. The spare, tender "Summer Dress" follows, with Kozelek's resonant voice, accompanied only by guitar and violin, conveying an almost palpable sense of longing. An electric guitar finally kicks in on "San Geronimo," a moody, minor key meditation on the love and loss of both a person and a place. Marrying a simple riff with a precise and crafty arrangement, this is perhaps the record's most powerful track. After the stark "Shadows," the pastoral vibe that begins the record returns on "Over My Head," a light acoustic workout that gradually breaks up in an improvised ending. Things get a bit murky toward the end, but Kozelek's voice, in all its velvety fragility, cuts through the fog. "Drop," the final song, is Kozelek at his most confessional, and definitely not a closing theme for a kids' TV show. SKU: 1005379
