The Lovin' Spoonful were recruited to score two films in the mid-'60s, Woody Allen's Japanese spy spoof WHAT'S UP, TIGER LILY? and Francis Ford Coppola's first major studio release, YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW. The latter introduced two Spoonful favorites, the title song and "Darling Be Home Soon." Most of the music is instrumental, and it remains quite infectious and inventive decades after it was created. Throughout, many familiar John Sebastian themes were recast to address their role as underscoring for a variety of screen actions. The handful done as sprightly marching band arrangements are as enjoyable and natural as the fun-loving spirit that The Lovin' Spoonful were all about. All told, these were two upbeat half-hours of fun when they were first released, and they remain so today.

Further Seems Forever is that rarest of entities--a mainstream rock band with an original sound. Though the group's style incorporates a multitude of influences, they don't ape any one style. One can hear echoes of everything from U2's widescreen sincerity to the heart-on-sleeve rock of Goo Goo Dolls, and the heavy-but-hooky Our Lady Peace. The band has changed singers since their debut album, but you'd never guess it from listening to the seamless manner in which the new guy interacts with the rest of the band. There's a strong element of spirituality in the intelligently written lyrics, but nothing overt. Further Seems Forever are as far as Creed is from being a Christian Rock band. They simply have larger themes on their mind than the usualheavy-rock crowd, and a more original (though still completely accessible) framework in which to place them.

Released in 1996, WALKING ON LOCUSTS was John Cale's first solo album of new songs in over a decade. In the interim he recorded several collaborative works, including SONGS FOR DRELLA with old Velvet Undergound mate Lou Reed and WRONG WAY UP with Brian Eno. He also released a live set, FRAGMENTS OF A RAINY SEASON, which explored selections from throughout his career.
This album is a delight from beginning to end. Cale has long delighted in mixing a deceptively cheerful-sounding delivery with darker underlying imagery. Guests include Maureen Tucker, David Byrne, and the Soldier String Quartet. The quartet appears on "Gatorville & Points East" and the beautiful "Set Me Free," a song that features a pedal steel guitar that weaves through the sonic curtain of bowed strings. There are numerous songs that are catchy, mesmerizing, and haunting."So What" and "Entre Nous," with their chorus vocals, are two such pieces. This is a superb album and an essential title in Cale's catalog.

In the spirit of Cheech & Chong's classic stoner comedies, hip-hopheavyweights Redman and Method Man team up on the film HOW HIGH. This cinematic ode to the powers of marijuana finds the pair handily taking on the role of comedic duo, but the inevitable soundtrack album is where Redman and Method Man are really in their own element. While the pair's rapping skills are demonstrated admirably throughout HOW HIGH, a number of collaborations vary the sonic approach appreciably. Jonell adds some winsome R&B vocals to "Round and Round Remix." Limp Bizkit pops up on "N 2 Gether now," but surprisingly the result bears little evidence of that group's heavy rock, maintaining a focus on slinky hip-hop. Even Mary J. Blige pops up here, lending her unmistakable voice to "All I Need."

After his genre-defining AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, Brian Eno collaborated with minimalist composer Harold Budd for AMBIENT 2: THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR, which proved to be a natural pairing. By taking Budd's solo piano compositions and applying his unique sound treatments, Eno managed to enhance a startlingly spare work, yet keep its simplicity intact. On many tracks, Eno's additional sounds are so subtle that they easily mesh with any background noise that may surround the listener. A car driving by in the distance or an airplane flying overhead might fit seamlessly into one of the compositions. Budd's delicate piano work, though, is always at the fore, slowly creating a quiet, yet expansive,sonic landscape. Here both musicians are wholly in their element, making this an album of truly astounding beauty.

After the phenomenal success of TAKIN' OFF, Herbie Hancock's second release for Blue Note was constructed in the mold of its predecessor. The tantalizing MY POINT OF VIEW offers many of the same early Hancock signature moments, but withan expanded palette that reflects the pianist's growing experience. A larger ensemble helped to broaden the range of this release as Blue Note regulars Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, and Grant Green add to Hancock's sonic textures. Also on board are the advanced trombonist Grachan Moncur III, Bill Evans' bassist Chuck Israels, and the young drum wonder Tony Williams.
As with "Watermelon Man" (the opener on TAKIN' OFF), the opening "Blind Man, Blind Man" is a simple, funky groove that serves to attract non-jazz listeners and invite them into Hancock's creative world. More traditional selections like the delightful "A Tribute to Someone" and the bouncing blues number "And What if I Don't" offer Hancock's masterful take on the standard format. Of special note is the centerpiece track, "King Cobra," an inventive piece that captures stunning work by Byrd, Mobley, Moncur, Hancock, and the ferocious Williams on the fade-out. Also included is a second take of the opening number as a closing bookend.

When Sinatra teams up with conductor/arranger Nelson Riddle, you know the results are bound to swing, and swinging is what this brash, jazzy and very upbeat album is all about. Though the Chairman has staked his claim as the preeminent saloon singer, telling tale after tragic tale of love gone awry, this album represents the sunny side of Sinatra. He is bold and energetic here. His undeniably authoritative readings of songs like "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "You Make Me Feel So Young" MAKE them into standards, no matter who has sung them before.
Riddle's orchestrations are subtle but powerful, and SWINGIN' LOVERS finds Sinatra's voice bouncing off punchy horn stabs and floating gently along sweet rivers of woodwinds. One of the most impressive aspects of Sinatra's talent is his control over the tone and shape of his voice. His singing is expansive and fluid-sounding, but it's plain that every atom of that sound is crafted with the utmost precision. Sinatra's depth of musical understanding makes his delivery of even light-hearted songs like "Anything Goes" and "Makin' Whoopee" cut as deeply as hismost romantic ballad.

A strange archival release of '60s maverick psychedelic band Red Crayola. This double CD represents a vital missing link in the group's three-decade history. On its first album, THE PARABLE OF ARABLE LAND, Red Crayola linked rock songs with bursts of frenzied group improvisations called "Free Form Freak Outs." Their live sets were said to have consisted solely of noise, and this set provides the proof.
On both the concert tracks, the band indulges in earsplitting feedback for its own sake, even more abrasive and austere than anything the Velvet Underground, The Mothers of Invention, or The Grateful Dead did in concert at the time. The radio broadcast included here of their Berkeley Folk Festival appearance finds a bewildered broadcaster assuming that the band is tuning up and will be starting their set momentarily. The audience response is predictably chaotic. The tracks recorded in hotel rooms and with John Fahey are considerably more sedate, similar to theinstrumentals on the lost COCONUT HOTEL album (also issued by Drag City). Any lover of experimental music should appreciate LIVE 1967, and hardy Red Crayola devotees will not be disappointed.

HASTEN DOWN THE WIND was a number three smash and Ronstadt's first million- selling disc. It also garnered her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It's a very real, raw album with Ronstadt's sweet vocals pierced by a touch of grit. "Lose Again" is a country rock ballad written by Karla Bonoff. Linda decides it's time to rock out with a kickin' version of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day."
Ronstadt delves into Spanish territory with "Lo Siento Mi Vida," a beautiful acoustic number. The title track is a ballad written by Warren Zevon and features fellow Californian Don Henley on harmony vocals. Ronstadt goes the Jamaican route with "Give One Heart," a reggae love song. Linda does a powerful and searing rendition of Patsy Cline's "Crazy," as her soprano sheds new light on an old classic. Ronstadt has explored many musical styles in her career, and HASTEN is no exception, as country, rock, pop, Spanish music and reggae come together to form a winner.

There are dozens of collections featuring Lee Perry's legendary '70s band the Upsetters, a group that boasted the powerhouse rhythm section of Aston and CarltonBarrett. This 16-track compilation is one of the very best. Focusing on the band's classic 1969-1973 period, when the group was the house band at Perry's Upsetter Studios, this collection of Jamaican singles has both the hits, such as the classic "Return of Django" and its sequel, "Django Shoots First," and a nice sprinkling of rarities. The James Brown-quoting "Cold Sweat" is early reggae at its tightest and funkiest, and bizarre tracks like "Cow Thief Skank" and "Kill Them All" are early examples of Perry's legendary weirdness. He's known to many as an inoffensive pop balladeer, but at the arguable peak of his career in the late '70s, Billy Joel released his darkest, most emotionally charged album. THE STRANGER abandons the grandstanding and broad melodic sweep of Joel's earlier records for a more intimate, introspectivesound, effectively communicating Joel's ruminations on the perils of life and love. "Movin' Out" is something of an existentialist anthem, chronicling the way people's dreams are often irreparably crushed. The ominous-sounding title tune examines the many guises with which lovers disguise themselves in their attempts to entrap and deceive each other. "Only the Good Die Young" is hedonism at it's most iconoclastic. Even "She's Always a Woman," ostensibly a romantic piano ballad, is full of thorny, less-than-complimentary observations about its subject. Joel's emotional honesty would never be this clear-eyed and unabashed again.

This disc will knock you on your heinie, say, "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to do that. Here, let me help you up!" and then knock you back down again, repeatedly over the course of fourteen wonderful tracks. IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING is an all-instrumental collection of the genre obscurely known as post-rock, a musical twilight zone that encompasses artists who've escaped classification by any other means.
Wriggling in this catch-all net are The Troops, who play almost-classical folk, Pele, who ape the high-speed interplay of their '60s Brazilian soccer star namesake (let's discuss Pele: You should own every note they've ever recorded. Discussion over...), and the fuzz and buzz of Morning Lark Syndrome. Other high points include a track by Seattle singer/songwriter Damien Jurado (under the name "Maremont,") an appearance by ex-Posies Ken Stringfellow, and the fact that a portionof the sales are going to World Vision International, a highly reputable Christian relief organization.

It appeared seven years after Clark left the Byrds and has a laid-back, Sunday morning feel that was echoed in the Eagles' early work. However, beneath the languid rhythms are several songs that rank with Clark's best compositions. One track, 'Full Circle Song', was later performed by the Byrds on their reunion album, while two others, 'She's The Kind Of Girl' and the lovely 'One In A Hundred', are Byrds reunions.

Bad Company's 1995 release, COMPANY OF STRANGERS, saw original bandmembers Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke working with new singer Robert Hart. While the album wasn't on par with such '70s classics as their self-titled debut or STRAIGHT SHOOTER, it showed that the new line-up was capable at updating the band's trademark blues rock, as proven by the album-opening title cut.
