Dance Hall Dreams
Personnel: Rosie Flores (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, finger cymbals); Don Henry (acoustic guitar, percussion); Ray Kennedy (12-string guitar, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ, drums, tambourine); Cindy Cashdollar (resonator, slide, lap & triple neck steel guitars); Tammy Rogers (mandolin, viola, background vocals); Justin Reinhardt (keyboards); Kevin Smith (acoustic bass); Sarah Brown (electric bass, maracas, background vocals); Donald Lindley (drums, percussion); Siobhan Kennedy, Radney Foster, Eddie Dunbar, Rachel Gladstone (background vocals). Recorded live at Cibolo Creek Country Club, San Antonio, Texas. Includes liner notes by Jonny Whiteside. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Rosie Flores isa contender for the title of Queen of the Honky-Tonks. Flores was in one of the first country-punk bands, the all-female Screamin' Sirens, before striking out on her own. She carries on in the California honky-tonk tradition as exemplified by two of her biggest influences: Wanda Jackson and Rose Maddox. DANCE HALL DREAMS has a lot of variety, however. Note the winsome charmer "Who's Gonna Fix It Now," a Beatles-tinged pop-rocker, and the reflective "From Where I Stand." The rollicking album-opener "Little Bit More" has the honky-tonkin' snap that will set you to dancing. Her voice is perky, tart and is not unlike Loretta Lynn's might be if Lynn were a rock & roll/rockabilly singer. Her band is sharp, crisp and understated-emphasizing the song, not slickness or empty flash. Rosie Flores is the real deal, with plenty of heart and no artificial additives. SKU: 1011835

Performance
Glide includes: Will Sergeant (guitar). Unless you're one of the few that rememberEcho & the Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant's 1982 solo album THEMES FOR GRIND, made to accompany a film that never materialized, you're likely to be surprised by his work under the Glide moniker. As Glide, Sergeant specializes in instrumental, largely electronic music. PERFORMANCE is the second Glide album, and it has a much smoother, more ambient feel than its predecessor. With guitar and electronics, Sergeant crafts long tracks full of crystalline sound sculpture, assisted on one of the album's epic-length cuts by a drummer playing an electronic kit. The carefully plucked and processed guitar tones blended with warm, organic electronics are reminiscent of the '70s collaborations of Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. Beauty is clearly the goal here, as Sergeant eschews the dark ambient style of Jeff Greinke et al while simultaneously avoiding the new age overtones of Steve Roach. The title derives from the fact that the album's centerpiece cut was apparently recorded live, but you'd never know it from the flawless flow of sound. PERFORMANCE stands out as one of the finest ambient releases of 2000. SKU: 6437973

Chasin' The Gypsy
Personnel: James Carter (soprano, tenor, F-mezzo & bass saxophones); Charlie Giordano (accordion); Regina Carter (violin); Jay Berliner (steel-string guitar); Romero Lubambo (nylon-string guitar); Steve Kirby (bass); Joey Baron (drums); Cyro Baptista (percussion). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. CHASIN' THE GYPSY finds saxophonist James Carter, one of today's most soulful and innovative young jazz cats, confidently swinging an acoustic crew through music written and inspired by Parisian guitar legend Django Reinhardt. With a pair of guitarists deftly complimenting master Reinhardt, impressionistic accordion washes, and violin sensation Regina Carter's slippery, Stephane Grappelli-inspired gypsy slides, Carter getsto the music's deep roots and flourishes. Reinhardt's melodic savvy, jubilant swing and wit are not lost on James Carter, who booms into the opener "Nuages" blowing the tune's head on a body-rattling bass sax--the initial surprise of hearing this uncommon instrument played with such effortless warmth is enough to coax a smile. Moving easily between tenor, soprano and f mezzo horn, Carter conjures many emotional moods; from the haunted, vibrato-soaked heartbreak of "La Derniere Bergere" to the carnivalesque accordion and sly musical smirk of "Manoir De Mes Reves." James Carter has certainly been CHASIN' THE GYPSY--sounds like he might have caught her, too. SKU: 1035703

Mit Gas
Tomahawk: Mike Patton, John Stanier, Duane Dennison, Kevin Rutmanis. Recorded at Grandmaster Recorders, Hollywood, California. When Faith No More emerged in the early '90s, who'd have guessed that singer Mike Patton would eventually leave their secondhand-Chili Peppers sound behind for such a wide variety of innovative musical projects? Creating wildly eclectic, experimental, and unclassifiable music with both Fantomas and Mr. Bungle, Patton has consistently exceeded expectations. If Tomahawk veers closer to Patton's rock-star past, it's only in comparison to the extremes of his other work. While the aggressive tone of the heavy guitars and drums on MIT GAS certainly guarantee it a place in the nu-metal world, Tomahawk is a far smarter group than most who operate under that banner. They incorporate a number of disparate (for metal) influences, including reggae, funk, and Zappa, even as they syncretize it all into a distinctive, unrelenting sonic attack. Heavy enough for the headbangers, but savvy enough for those who've followed Patton on his wild ride throughout the years, MITGAS comes quite close to being all things to all heavy-rock fans. Producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producers: Michael Lang, Ben Young. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California between January 5 and August 20, 1959. Discs one, two and three originally released on Verve (6082-5). Includes liner notes by Lawrence D. Stewart, Ben Young, Phil Bailey and Milt Bernhart. Digitally remastered by Chris Herles using 20-bit technology from the original master tapes (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. The paradox of Ella Fitzgerald's prominence in the history of jazz singing and her lack of emotional intensity is much less apparent on this album. George Gershwin's affinity with jazz, and the corresponding delight jazz musicians take in performing his material, allow the singer to fly with the music. As for brother Ira's lyrics, they receive their due as cheerful, tender and always delightful examples of the lyricist's art. The Songbook series remains one of Ella Fitzgerald's major contributions--among many--to American popular music and this in particular is one of the best of thesizeable bunch. SKU: 1014656

Through the mist of subsequent pale imitations, it is difficult now to recall the enormous impact of this trans-cultural album. The mould-breaking blend of rock and African rhythms is exemplified by "Homeless," an exquisitely melancholic evocation of African beauty and desolation. The stirring harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo illuminate "Homeless" and "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes." The element of humour in the latter is echoed in "You Can Call Me Al," a hit single. The lyrics are finely crafted and the result is a structure of impeccable proportions. There are angels inthe architecture. SKU: 1006227

Bless The Weather
Personnel: John Martyn (vocals, guitar); Danny Thompson, Tony Reeves, Roger Powell, Ian Whiteman, Richard Thompson, Smiley De Joness, Beverley Martyn. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Idiosyncratic, difficult, lovable genius. Many other plaudits have been laid at the feet of this enigmatic giant. BLESS THE WEATHER was a gorgeous transitional record from folk to jazzier material, and features, among others, Richard Thompson and the mercurial Danny Thompson, arguably Martyn's greatest sparring partner. In addition to the hopelessly romantic title track and"Head And Heart," there is a wonderful interpretation of "Singin' In The Rain". The experimental "Glistening Glyndebourne" showed our John's developing interest in the "echoplex" sound in which he was to immerse himself over the next few years. Other words that spring to mind are wayward, boozer, cheeky, passionate and, once more, genius. SKU: 1002510

Black Trash (The Autobiography Of Kirk Jones)
Full title: Black Trash: The Autobiography Of Kirk Jones. Personnel: Sticky Fingaz (rap vocals); Omar Epps (spoken vocals); Tony Prendatt (various instruments, programming); Black Child, Raekwon, Rah Digga, Redman, Dave Hollister, Firestarr, Eminem, X1, Still Livin, Scarred 4 Life, Superb, Guess Who, Petey Pablo, Canibus, Columbo The Shining Star, Choclatt (vocals); Nate Smith (keyboards); Charles Shaw, Roger Munroe (programming). Producers include: Sticky Fingaz, Joe Naughty, Rockwilder, DJ Scratch, Self. Recorded at Unique Studios, New York, New York and Lo Rider Studios, Englewood, New Jersey. Includesliner notes by Sticky Fingaz. Sticky Fingaz, otherwise known as Kirk Jones, presents an ambitious hip-hop outing that draws on a wide variety of influences in service of a theatrical vision of rap as multi-media experience. BLACK TRASH is packaged as the soundtrack to a nonexistent film. While this is an idea that's been pursued before, Jones so thoroughly transforms the gangsta aesthetic through his cinematic conceptualism that it seems like a completely fresh notion. The use of film soundtrack-style backing tracks and melodic structures that could have come straight from a Broadway musical, as well as the theatrical context, make the violent elements of the lyrics much more palatable. And the spoken interludes have a much more substantial reason for being than on most rap albums. The gem here is undoubtedly "What If I Was White," which features Eminem, and finds Jones tackling the racial turnabout in a novel, winningly humorous way. And the misogynist's apology "Sister I'm Sorry" is as welcome as it is overdue. SKU: 1060498

Reality (Limited Edition)
This limited edition of REALITY includes a bonus disc. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, baritone saxophone, keyboards); Gail Ann Dorsey (vocals); Tony Visconti (guitar, keyboards, bass, background vocals); Mark Plati (guitar, bass); Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard (guitar); Mike Garson (piano); Sterling Campbell, Matt Chamberlain (drums); Catherine Russell (background vocals). Recorded at Looking Glass Studios, New York, New York. Based on the success David Bowie had by resurrecting his collaborative relationship with producer Tony Visconti on 2002's stellar HEATHEN, Bowie returned to the well with Visconti for its follow-up, REALITY. The result finds this New York City resident using his adopted hometown and cozy domestic life as impetus for another batch of fine millennial manna. Featuring the backing of talented musicians such as guitarist Earl Slick, pianist Mike Garson, and drummer Sterling Campbell, the sound that permeates these 11 songs ranges from the SCARY MONSTERS-era shuffle of "Never Get Old" to the stripped-down, late-night lounge aura of "Bring Me the Disco King," a song dappled by Garson's piano runs and dusted off by Bowie after laying around for a decade. Balancing the sorrow ofthe sparse "The Loneliest Guy" with a sunnier mood, Bowie tips his hat to Jonathan Richman and George Harrison by way of eclectic covers of, respectively, "Pablo Picasso" and "Try Some, Buy Some," a little-known Harrison composition originally cut as a Ronnie Spector single. Avoiding the nostalgia treadmill that's mired down many of his peers, Bowie has instead used REALITY as yet another stepping-stone to latter-day greatness. SKU: 1087050

Kind Of Blue [Hybrid SACD]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto saxophone); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums). Producer: Irving Townshend. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on March 2 & April 22, 1959. Includes liner notes by Robert Palmer and Bill Evans. With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz. Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touchof pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions. Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine elation. The fat, shimmering beat of the classic Evans/Chambers/Cobb rhythm team is an oasis of calm throughout the childish blues "Freddie Freeloader." Often credited to Davis, "Blue In Green" is an Evans masterpiece, in which the rhythmic oasis becomes a smoky mirage for Davis' minor reveries on muted horn. The waltzing "All Blues" is one of the smoothest, most swinging grooves in the history of jazz, while "Flamenco Sketches" reflects Miles fascination with the earthy melodies and brooding metaphors of the Iberian peninsula...a harbinger of his next masterpiece, SKETCHES OF SPAIN. KIND OF BLUE remains Miles Davis' most evocative piece of musical haiku. SKU: 1088588

One Of These Nights
The Eagles: Bernie Leadon (vocals, electric & steel guitars, banjo, mandolin); Don Felder (vocals, electric & slide guitars); Glenn Frey (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass); Don Henley (vocals, drums, percussion). Recorded at Mac Emmerman's Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida. This marked the transition from a nifty country rock band to a rock combo with the potential for world domination. The music was a tad sweeter and less ironic, a morsel rockier with Top 40 friendliness. Tracks such as 'Take It To The Limit' and 'Lyin' Eyes' have been played far too much on the radio. They need to be rested in place of Bernie Leadon's unusualinstrumental, 'Journey Of The Sorcerer' (used as the theme to BBC Television's Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy), or the other great Leadon song, 'I Wish You Peace'. Financially, the Eagles never looked back after this, but the critical snipers were out in force. SKU: 1003445

Thicket, The
Personnel: David Grubbs, Mary Lass Stewart (vocals); Tony Conrad (violin); Ernst Long Kirche (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jeb Bishop (trumpet);Josh Abrams (bass); John McEntire (drums). David Grubbs austere and cerebral solo disc is not to be filed under "easy listening." Unlike his listener-friendly contributions to Gastr Del Sol's CAMOUFLEUR, many of these minimal pieces are filled with tension. That's not to say this is an unrewarding disc. The lyrics have more in common with Gurdjieff than, oh, say Chuck Berry, and the arrangements are deliberate and full of subtlety. A harshly plucked banjo/guitar hammers out anxious eighth-notes on the title track. A small horn section appears without apology. In the gorgeous slight-reprise of "On Worship," harmonium and violin drone out a fragment of a melody from an earlier piece. Many pieces change timbre in mid-song or slightly before closing. Haunting and unpredictable, THE THICKET breathes the same rarefied air as The Red Krayola's '90s work. Like a trek in the Himalayas, it may be difficult, but the view is spectacular. SKU: 1023070

Rancho Texicano (The Very Best Of ZZ Top)
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, fiddle, harmonica, baritone saxophone, keyboards); Frank Beard (vocals, alto saxophone, drums, percussion); Dusty Hill (vocals, tenor saxophone, keyboards, bass guitar). Producer: Bill Ham Compilation Producers: Bill Ham; Bob Small; James Austin. Liner Note Authors: James Austin; Tom Vickers. In its long history, ZZ Top followed a career trajectory that took the group to unforeseen heights of commercial success. Starting as a feisty blues-based trio, the band never abandoned its original inclinations, but smartly expanded its approach to reflect contemporary styles. However, far from turning its back on its roots in the 1980s, the boys from Texas embedded those blues elements into their biggest hits. The two-discTEXICANO offers the perfect amount of space to tell the ZZ Top tale with the succinct drama of the band's best songs (the Top had previously been showcased with a single-disc GREATEST HITS and the four-CD box CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ). Presented chronologically, the set starts with a bang as the trio, by the time of 1970's ZZ TOP'S FIRST ALBUM, was already a perfectly tuned hotrod. The mid-'70s found the hits getting bigger, but what was big for a blues-based band became enormous as the '80s dawned. "Cheap Sunglasses" and then the group's smart embrace of videos and electronics ("Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," and "Legs") expanded its audience into the millions. Latter-day tracks reveal that that although ZZ Top wandered from the strict blues path at times, it never strayed too far from its trademark Texas boogie sound. SKU: 6558288

Gift [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer file. Taproot: Stephen Richards (vocals); Mike DeWolf (guitar); Philip Lipscomb (bass); Jarrod Montague (drums). Recorded at Master Control Recording, Burbank, California. While Taproot could be hastily labeled a rapcore band, there's a great deal more here than a series of grooving, detuned riffs. Vocalist Stephen Richards is sure to catch the attention of Faith No More fans with his schizophrenic vocal approach, especially on tracks such as "Mentobe" and "Believed." Love/hate contradictions and self-loathing are the focus of "I Am" and "Mirror's Reflection," while "Dragged Down" laments over a friend who has become an emotional vampire. The Mike Patton comparisons are unavoidable on tracks such as "Emotional Times" and the particularly mosh-worthy "1 Nite Stand." The high-strung, positiveenergy of "Smile" and the heartfelt "Now" show the many dimensions and diversity of a band whose finger is firmly on the pulse of modern heavy music. SKU: 1044449
