Skinny Legs And All
Recorded between 1962 and 1968. Tex, whose style derived from gospel and country music, was one of the best and most versatile of Southern soul singers, as well as one of the few who was able to survive into the disco era without really changing his approach.. This album collects most of his work between 1962 and 1969, beginning with his early efforts as a sort of Fats Domino wannabe ("You Got What It Takes"), and it includes both his breakthrough 1964 hit "Hold What You've Got" (Tex sings only the choruses--on the verses, he's basically delivering a sermon) and the rowdy and funny "Skinny Legs and All," the two songsthat most define the outer limits of his style. Cowboy In Flames
The Waco Brothers: Jon Langford, Deano (guitar, vocals); Marcus Durante (steel guitar); Tracey (mandolin, vocals); Alan Sprocket Doughty (bass); Steve "Leopard Boy" Goulding (drums). Additional personnel: Iggy Yoachum (vocals); Sammy "TheBull" Ladvig, Eric (hand claps). Though their sound often suggests what might have happened if SANDINISTA had been recorded in Nashville, the Waco Brothers come by their punk roots honestly. Guitarist/singer Jon Langford cut his teeth with the Mekons, who eventually mutated into a first-rate country-rock band, but began as died-in-the-wool punks in late '70s Britiain. The Waco Brothers are a natural extension of Langford's work with the latter-day Mekons, and COWBOY IN FLAMES should appeal to anyone enamored of that band. The Waco Brothers marry the spirit of vintage British punk to traditional American country. Hoarse, vehement vocals and thrashing guitars mix with graceful steel guitar and mandolin on songs that trade the usual Nashville brand of romantic pathos for intelligent socio-political observations that never become didactic. Most importantly, the Waco Brothers can rock that two-step like Satan's plow-mule was nipping at their heels. SKU: 1012099

So Far
Producers: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Bill Halverson. Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwist. When the CSN&Y compilation SO FAR was released in 1974, Neil Young had already been gone from the group for two years and wouldn't return for another 14. Although this collection bears the quartet's name, material is also included from Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled debut album. Despite the quartet often operating within a tense framework which resulted in DEJA VU, their only studio up to that point, the music they made was monumental and (as was appropriate of the times), often of both a personal and political nature. Songs such as "Our House" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (written about Judy Collins) sidled up to more topical fare such as "Ohio" (written about the National Guard shooting protesters at Kent State) and the socially conscious "Teach Your Children." The quartet's most distinguishing characteristic was their crystalline harmonies, brimmingover in all their compositions--particularly in the complex arrangements of "Deja Vu" and the brief acappella tune "Find The Cost Of Freedom." Ask A Woman Who Knows
Personnel: Natalie Cole, Diana Krall (vocals); Roy Hargrove (flugelhorn); Joe Sample (piano); Rob Mounsey (keyboards); Russell Malone (guitar); Christian McBride (bass); LewisNash (drums); The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra. ASK A WOMAN WHO KNOWS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Better Than Anything" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "I'm Glad There Is You" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals. To be honest, there are some stern folk for whom Natalie Cole will never be forgiven for the overdubbed mega-hit duets she recorded with her late father. That would be a shame for them, because they'd miss out on the fact that Cole, as she's spent the years since the aforementioned hits proving, is one damn fine standards singer. She's got it all; a confident, relaxed delivery, an easy sense of swing, and of course unerring range and chops. On ASK A WOMAN WHO KNOWS, her first recording for famed jazz label Verve, she displays her gifts with grace and consistency, whether she's simmering over the Brazilian-tinged "Tell Me All About It" or moving mellifluously through the BAGHDAD CAFE tune "Calling You." Try to forget "Unforgettable" and see what's going down here. SKU: 1077907

52nd Street Themes
Joe Lovano Nonet: Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Steve Slagle (alto saxophone); George Garzone, Ralph Lalama (tenor saxophone); Gary Smulyan (baritone saxophone); Tim Hagans (trumpet); Conrad Herwig (trombone); John Hicks (piano); Dennis Irwin (bass); Lewis Nash (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studio A, New York, New York on November 3 & 4, 1999. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. 52ND STREET THEMES won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. After numerous successful small group recordings, master saxophonist Joe Lovano tries his hand at leading a larger ensemble, in this case a nonet. With 52nd STREET THEMES, Lovano goes for a mellow group sound that, like theBirth Of The Cool band or Gil Evans' long-running outfit, swings and sways through several choice standards and originals. Lovano's signature big-toned tenor gets center stage in most of the arrangements, which are tastefully orchestrated by Willie "Face" Smith. The beauty of a band this size is that the listener is given not just one group, but several smaller ensembles--trios, quartets, quintets--within the larger one, depending on the specific divisions of the arrangements and solo spots. Lovano and his group highlight this aspect of the nonet perfectly, varying their musical approach for a given arrangement while always maintaining a cohesive sound. Standout cuts include familiar standards such as Miles Davis' "Sippin' At Bell's," Tad Dameron's swinging "Tad's Delight," and Gershwin's graceful "Embraceable You." SKU: 1032024

Early Days And Latter Days (The Very Best Of Led Zeppelin) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Led Zeppelin: Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham. This two-disc anthology brings together two previously released collections, each chronicling a different phase of the career of the 1970s' most successful rock band. The EARLY DAYS disc finds Led Zeppelin still leaning closely to their blues roots, though such songs as "Whole Lotta Love," "Black Dog," and "When the Levee Breaks" pretty much reinvented the form for a generation of rock fans. Simultaneously, they were tossing off definitive anthems like the ubiquitous "Stairway to Heaven" and the mystical folk-rock of "Battle of Evermore." TheLATTER DAYS disc features a batch of songs that move beyond those roots into new sonic territory. The moody "No Quarter" could have wandered in from a contemporaneous Pink Floyd session. "Kashmir" features a groundbreaking Eastern-tinged arrangement, and "All of My Love" is an uncommonly tender love ballad. Over the course of these two discs, one gets the full picture of a group whose reach was always fully the equal of its grasp. SKU: 1077677

Empty Glass
Personnel includes: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar); Rabbit Bundrick (keyboards); Tony Butler (bass); Kenney Jones, Mark Brzezicki (drums). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen. Who mastermind Pete Townshend's strongest solo record was born in a hailstorm of despair, uncertainty, and tribulation. With the once viscerally powerful Who in limbo, the guitarist nearly sunk himself into brandy-drenched oblivion. He emerged with one of his most gripping solo pieces and--perhaps unsurprisingly--the most Who-like album of all his solo work. Pete plunges into his familiar themes of aging, sexuality, and spiritual decay with fervor, desperation, and commitment. And while EMPTY GLASS does not approach the roaring physicalityof the Who at its best, the emotional punch of "Jools and Jim" and "I Am an Animal" is sure to rattle the cage of even the most ardent hard rock devotee. Also of note are Townshend's vocals. Through the entire album, whether on the radio-ready paean to Meher Baba "Let My Love Open the Door," the bracing "Rough Boys," or the sublime "A Little Is Enough," his vocals are hanging on the edge of a cliff, presumably dangling over a certain death. Black Beauty (Live At Filmore West) [SACD]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Steve Grossman (soprano saxophone); Chick Corea (electric piano); Dave Holland (electric bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Recorded live atthe Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on April 10, 1970. Includes liner notes by Chick Corea. BLACK BEAUTY is the initial live document of Miles Davis' electric music built out of blues, free jazz, and post-modern musical thought. The mood is one of controlled chaos, with each soloist in top form, and group interplay at a near-ESP level. The tracks morph naturally into one another; with well-placed phrases from Miles cueing the players' transitions. The mercurial groove of "Directions," with Steve Grossman's wailing soprano, disintegrates into Stockhausenesque electronic static waves before unloading into the thick blues throttle of "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down." A trumpet solo on "I Fall in Love Too Easily" briefly slows the pace, but the rest is all forward motion. Dave Holland's rumbling bass and Jack DeJohnette's rolling backbeat power the group, while Airto Moreira furnishes exotic percussive colors. By the time Miles begins blasting trumpet runs at Chick Corea's electric piano on "Spanish Key," the worlds of jazz and improvisational rock have been united, undoubtedly leaving the audience feeling that they'd been struck by musical lightning. Three Or Four Shades Of Blue
The Mingus Band: Charles Mingus (acoustic bass); Ricky Ford (tenor saxophone); Jack Walrath (trumpet); Bob Neloms (piano); Dannie Richmond (drums). Additional personnel: George Coleman (alto & tenor saxophones); Sonny Fortune (alto saxophone); Jimmy Rowles (piano); Larry Coryell, Philip Catherine, John Scofield (guitar); George Mraz, Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Dannie Richmond (drums). Recorded on March 9 & 11, 1977 at Atlantic Studios, New York, and March 29, 1977 at The Record Plant, New York. Includes liner notes by Ilhan Mimaroglu. Even in the latter stages of his career the notoriously restless Mingus never stopped searching for new ways to interpret and present his compositions. As befits one with such a mercurial muse, his artistic destinations were often surprising, but seldom as surprising as on THREE OR FOUR SHADES OF BLUES. Here he reconfigures (and redefines in the process) some of the best-known tunes from his daunting canon, tackling them in a more contemporary style. In 1977, this meant the enlistment of guitarists Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine to add some burning, fusion-friendly licks to "Better Git Hit in Your Soul" and frenetic amphetamine-flamenco riffs to "Goodbye Porkpie Hat." It's to Mingus' credit as arranger and bandleader that these updates never seem contrived and still don't sound dated. It's just one more way of viewing the revolutionary work of this compositional giant. THREE OR FOUR SHADESis exhilarating in its fresh outlook and unfettered passion. SKU: 1012342

Joya
A limited pressing of JOYA contains the three-song bonus EP LITTLE JOYA. Personnel: Will Oldham, Dave Pajo, Colin Gagon, Bob Arellan. In 1997 Palace mastermind Will Oldham decided to stop playing the name game and admit that he was a solo act. For JOYA, Oldham stripped away the stylistic experimentation and creeping sonic strangeness that characterized previous efforts to make the most straightforward album of his career. Most of the country/folk influence is gone, replaced by a gently insistent indie-rock throb. The lyrics are as inscrutable as ever, poetic and expressive but rarely linear or subject-specific. A trio thatincludes Tortoise's David Pajo provides simple, steady backing as Oldham's troubled tenor relates these tales of personal upset and dislocation. SKU: 1008132

Featuring histrademark swirling, hypnotic guitar sound, this is a "heavenly slice of blissed out space rock". (vocals, percussion); Eric Leeds (vocals, flute, brass); Sheena Easton, Camille, Cat (vocals); Dez Dickerson, Jimmy Johnson, Miko (guitar, vocals); Atlanta Bliss (trumpets, brass). The Revolution: Wendy Melvoin (guitar, violin, vocals); Lisa Coleman (keyboards, violin, vocals); Matt Fink (keyboards, synthesizers, vocals); Brown Mark (bass, vocals); Bobby Z. (percussion). The New Power Generation includes: Mayte (vocals);Rosie Gaines (vocals, organ, programming); Tony M. (rap, background vocals); Levi Seacer Jr. (guitar, bass, background vocals). Producers: The Revolution, The New Power Generation, Prince. Compilation producer: Gregg Geller. Engineers include: David Leonard, Susan Rogers, Prince. Includes liner notes by Alan Leeds. THE HITS/THE B-SIDES contains 56 tracks on 3 CDs spanning Prince's 15-years as a performer. It also includes a 22-page booklet with photographs by Herb Ritts, plus extensive liner notes and track annotations about previously unreleased material, live recordings and B-sides. The prospect of collecting all the hits and B-sides by one of the most talented, prolific, and successful pop stars of the '80s and '90s onto a mere three discs seems laughable at first. Nevertheless, this stupendous, well-sequenced set provides a thoroughly representative overview of his Prince-ness's oeuvre and a genuine sense of the range and impact of his brilliance. The number of great songs on the 56-item track list boggles the mind. From his early synth-pop ("Dirty Mind," "Controversy"), through the golden middle-period of the Revolution ("1999," "Little Red Corvette," "When Doves Cry," "Raspberry Beret," "Kiss," "U Got The Look"), and on to such New Power Generation hits as "Gett Off" and "Sexy M.F.," Prince's innovative, accessible, and utterly singular musical vision is undeniable. The box is made doubly indispensable by the inclusion of previously unreleased material, live recordings, and B-sides (which fill the third disc). Unsurprisingly, much of this material finds Prince at his experimental best. Many of these songs-"Pink Cashmere," "200 Balloons," "Erotic City," and his version of his own "Nothing Compares 2 U" (made enormously popular by Sinead O'Connor)-should have been hit singles in their own right. This set is an absolute necessity for fans, newcomers, and everyone else. SKU: 1001347

Motorhead [Remastered]
In the late-'70s, it was unheard-of to merge punk with heavy metal. But then came Motorhead--up on stage blasting out high-energy three-chord punk rock with a metallic edge, all the whilelooking like longhaired bikers from hell. Most heavy metal front men of the era came off like pretty boys with their poses and good looks, but Motorhead leader Lemmy Kilminster was a glaring exception, with a face only a mother could love--unkempt facial hair, warts, crooked teeth, and shoulder length greasy hair. Motohead's 1977 self-titled debut includes the same buzz-saw punk metal that the trio would soon take to the top of the U.K. charts, and which would make them one of rock's most influential outfits. Included are such classic cuts as the title track, "Iron Horse/Born To Lose," "Lost Johnny," and "The Watcher." SKU: 1058328

Night Time
Killing Joke: Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Paul Ferguson (vocals, drums); Geordie (guitar);, Paul Raven (bass); Recorded at Hansa Tonstudios, Berlin, Germany, August-September 1984. Killing Joke continued to move from strength to strength with the visceral NIGHT TIME. The band's edges still displayedsomething of the brittle surface of earlier records, but its playing had become more polished, Jaz Coleman's vocals more intelligible and wrought with bitter irony, and the charged energy of its signature sound was now being produced with a more sophisticated hand. "Love Like Blood" is truly the album's centerpiece, Geordie's guitars arcing out like ruby lasers, etching a piquant melody above Paul Raven's percolating basslines, Coleman's preening synths and the gargantuan thrust of Paul Ferguson's mighty drums. "Multitudes" occupies a similar space but replaces the earlier song's massive forward motion with probing interludes of guitar and percussion. Also present here is the new wave/punk/dance thrash of "Eighties," all raw guitar sarcasm and rhythmic thunderclap. The near-majestic atmosphere that infuses NIGHT TIME paved the way for the even more accomplished BRIGHTER THAN A THOUSAND SUNS. SKU: 1004275

Places You Have Come To Fear The Most, The
Full title: The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most. Dashboard Confessional: Chris Carrabba (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Dan Bonebrake (bass, background vocals); Mike Marsh (drums, background vocals); Jolie Lindholm (background vocals). It will always be a difficult gambit writing intelligent, heartrending indie-rock guitar ballads wrought with agony without resorting to pretension, syrupy self-pity, or both. Dashboard Confessional manages to avoid such pitfalls with insightful, poignantly etched stories of the end of love and the edge of love, elegantly playing with words while keeping hackneyed lines and cornball moments at bay. DC's second album, THE PLACES YOU HAVE COME TO FEAR THE MOST, continues the Vagrant label's ascent into the forefront of earnest, emotional indie rock. Dashboard Confessional is actually the vehicle for the musings of one man, Chris Carraba. Thefrontman for at least two Florida rock bands, he derived the name from a line in one of his songs. Carraba wears his heart on his sleeve on pleading, stirring break-up songs like "The Good Fight" ("claimed you as my only hope and watched the floor as you retreated"), "Saints and Sinners" ('this apartment is starving for an argument") and the radio-ready "Screaming Infidelities" ("I'm missing your bed, I never sleep'). THE PLACES... suits Carraba's tortured soul well, and sets a seat for Dashboard Confessional at the ever-finicky emo table. SKU: 1072091

Chain Gang Vol.2 [PA]
Full title: State Property Presents The Chain Gang Vol. 2. State Property: Young Chris, Oschino, Sparks, Neef, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Peddi Crakk (rap vocals). Additional personnel: Jay-Z, Lil' Cease, Young Gunz, Dirt McGirt, Twista, Oschino. Producers include: Darrell "Digga" Branch, D. Dot, Spike, Jamal, Boola. StateProperty, a collective built around troubled but talented Beanie Sigel, were first seen by most of the public in a 2002 movie (fittingly enough titled STATE PROPERTY) starring said head rapper as Beans, a young gangsta who decides to lead his crew on a rampaging takeover of his city. Led by Beanie, the group is bolstered by the talents of a slew of the best up-and-coming young rappers Roc-A-Fella records could bring into the fold. Including the electrifying breakout lyricist Freeway and the alluringly dulcet-toned duo Young Gunz, State Property offer up a take-no-prisoners firestorm of violent flow focused by a righteously angry intelligence and the aptest of references. Switching off and combining their talent in multiple manners on CHAIN GANG VOL. 2, State Property presents a balanced attack of solid raps. Chris and Neef of Young Gunz start things up with their trademarked trading-off vocals on the ferocious "Can't Stop, Don't Stop." Roc-A-Fella CEO and prolific megastar Jay-Z (who played a rival gang leader in the movie) drops in with one of his strongest, twistiest turns on "It's On." And when most of the members combine talents, the strongest tracks emerge, as on the dizzy "When You Hear That." SKU: 1086736
