Legend (Original Soundtrack From Robin Of Sherwood)
LEGEND contains musiuc composed for the BBC television show "Robin Of Sherwood." Clannad: Pat Duggan (vocals, guitar, mandola); Paul Brennan (vocals, guitar, flute, tin whistle, keyboards); Ciaran Brennan (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, double bass); Noel Duggan (vocals, guitar); Maire Brennan (vocals, harp). Additional personnel: Pat Farrell (guitar); James Delaney (keyboards); Paul Moran (drums); Frank Ricotti (percussion). Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland and Trident Studios, London, England. Clannad started out like many traditional folk bands of Ireland; its early material for Gael-Linn Records could be considered traditional Irish folk, and most of the lyrics were in Irish. However, the band's signing to RCA Records and its 1982 hit "Theme From Harry's Game" catapulted it to the top of the UK pop charts. Most importantly, Clannad was one of the first Irish bands to truly delve into ambient music, an idiom that may be the modern counterpart to the traditional slow air. This 1984release finds Clannad at the height of its career. LEGEND is essentially the soundtrack to the television show, ROBIN OF SHERWOOD, and opens with the theme music, "Robin (The Hooded Man)." Other songs such as "Herne" and "Now is Here" retain the ambient (soaking wet with reverb) sound, though the theme for "Lady Marian" harks back to more traditional harp music. While the '80s synths are dated-sounding, most of the music here represents Irish pop at its finest. SKU: 1003363

Yeeeh Baby
Personnel includes: Christopher Lee "Big Punisher" Rios (rap vocals); Lord Sear, Opera Steve, Prospect, Donell Jones, Cuban Link, M.O.P., SunKiss, Remi Martin, Drag-On, Fat Joe (vocals); Joe Davi (guitar); Dahoud, Dave "Jam" Hall (keyboards); Papo Pepin (percussion); DJ LV (scratches); Tony Sunshine (background vocals). Producers include: Knobody, Just Blaze, Younglord, Minnesota, KNS. Engineers include: Christian "Soundboy" Delatour, Doug Wilson, Brian Stanley. Recorded at Sony Music Studios, Battery Studios, The Cutting Room, Axis & The Hit Factory, New York, New York; Sonic Wave Studios, North Carolina. Completed shortly before his death, YEEEAH BABY, the sophomore album from Christopher "Big Pun" Rios, is packed withthe same energy and street credibility that laced his platinum debut, Capital Punishment. The 500-pound MC leads the charge on powerful tracks like "Wrong Ones," "New York Giants," and "We Don't Care." Given the fact that he had only weeks to live, a track like "It's So Hard," featuring a guest vocal appearance from Donell Jones, has a certain unintended irony to it. Here, Pun talks about how hard it is striving to stay alive, do the right thing, and provide for his family, with everything and everyone pulling at him. Some of YEEEAH BABY's other standout cuts include "Off Wit His Head," featuring Prospect, "My Turn," produced by L.E.S., and the hit posse cut "You Was Wrong." SKU: 1069571

People Get Ready
Recorded at Sweatbox Studios, Austin, Texas. Just when you're ready to think that the only sound youngsters are interested in is made with two turntables and a microphone, one listen to PEOPLE GET READY will convince you that rock lives. The Mooney Suzuki turn in a disc full of blood, sweat, beers...and a whole lot of testosterone. These aren't balding, potbellied boys in their forties slavishly recreating a sound of a bygone area (two of the band were in their teens when this disc was recorded). The Mooney Suzuki make garage rock soundalive, radical, and even revolutionary. The performances are wild and confrontational, and the tunes are terrific. Is this the most exciting recording since the MC5 kicked out the jams? You decide. SKU: 1045148

Seven Souls
Material: Fahiem Dandan, Rammellzee (vocals); William S. Burroughs, Foday Musa Suso (spoken vocals); Bill Laswell (acoustic guitar, 4 & 6-string basses, percussion); Nicky Skopelitis (6- & 12-string guitars, baglama, saz, electric sitar, Fairlight); L. Shankar, Simon Shaheen (violin); Jeff Bova (keyboards); Jah Wobble (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums, Fairlight); Aiyb Dieng (percussion); Tetsu Inoue, DJ Spooky (sound effects). Producers include: Bill Laswell, Tim Simenon,Terre Thaemlitz. Bill Laswell's Material project has epitomized the concept of "fusion music" for well over two decades now. Material is a melting pot of styles, sounds, and substance-a confluence of rock, gut bucket funk, avant jazz, electronic interfacing, steel-wheel manipulation, and experimentally minded underpinnings. Material quietly makes the necessary musical statement every few years, galvanizing the air about it, then moving on. SEVEN SOULS was originally released in 1987 and turned a few heads even then. Now reissued with a gaggle of white-hot remixes (by Terre Thaemlitz, Tim Simenon, and Laswell himself), Material's provocative late-'80s missive seems to resonate even more brutally today. William Burroughs' spoken text, his trademark vocal gravel croaking over a funk of molasses-thick bass, chirping electronics, abstract white noise, stinging guitars, and massed ethnic percussion, serves to offer up a rationale of post-modern sense in an increasingly convoluted world. Musically, Material has never sounded tighter, leaner, or meaner. Soul killer, stereo killer, mind-smelter-if the road to the Western lands leads to music this good, pay the man his toll, and get on to it. SKU: 1037933

Far Cry From Dead, A
Personnel: Townes Van Zandt (vocals, acoustic guitar); Michael Spriggs (acoustic, F-hole acoustic & 12-string guitars, dobro, tipple); Richard Bennett (tremolo, Rickenbacker, Danelectro, Spanish & Gretch guitars); Russ Hicks (steel guitar); Jim Calvin (banjo); Charlie McCoy (harmonica, vibraphone); Susie Monick (squeeze box); Larry Knechtel (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer piano); Bob Wray (bass); Craig Krampf (drums, triangle, cymbals, tambourine, bells); Kenny Malone (drums, congas, shaker, percussion). Recorded at Texhoma Music Group Studio and Jack Clement's Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa, Nashville between 1989 and 1996; Imagine Studio, Nashville, Tennessee in 1998. Includes liner notes by Townes Van Zandt. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. The melancholic troubadour/poet whose name was legend in Nashville and Austin, Townes Van Zant inspired a generation of progressive country artists such as Lyle Lovett and Richard Buckner. His untimely passing left a void that A FAR CRY FROM DEAD attempts to fill. Consisting mostly of new versions of classic Van Zandt songs, the album was constructed by overdubbing a crack country-rock band onto vocal-and-guitar tracks recorded by Townes in '90s and late-'80s. The result is a successful updating of the Van Zandt catalog, the excesses of his early albums replaced by a leaner, meaner aesthetic more in keeping with his own uncompromising approach. Key tracks like "To Live's To Fly" and "For The Sake of the Song" combine rapturous flights of poetic imagery with an earthy, hard-bitten sensibility and a gift for simple, unforgettable melodies. The two previously unheard songs, "Squash" and "Sanitarium Blues," are slight compared to the majesty of their neighbors, but Van Zandt fans should be grateful for whateverthey can get in the way of new material. Hoobastank (UK Special Edition) [ECD]
Hoobastank: Doug Robb (vocals); Dan Estrin (guitar); Markuu Lappalainen (bass); Chris Hesse (drums). Additional personnel: Jim Wirt (piano). Recorded at 4th Street Recording, Santa Monica, California and Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. With opening gigs for the newly famous (Alien Ant Farm, Incubus) and the firmly established (Live), Hoobastank have had the envious opportunity to generate buzz and anticipation for their self-titled major label debut. Don't be put off by the goofy name; while it might be overtly campy, it's certainly original and makes for a catchy logo, cleverly incorporating Wallis' famous symbol for infinity. HOOBASTANK boasts palatable, hook-laden hard rock in the spirit of bands such as Papa Roach and 311. The band keeps it simple with guitar/bass/drum/vocals, seeing no need to add pretentious strings or synthesizers to their stage-ready sound. As for their songs, a connecting thread of broken relationships (both romantic and otherwise) permeates the lyrics, especially "Give It Back" and "Running Away." The soft then heavy "Up And Gone" speaks to innocence lost, while the ballad-worthy "To Be With You" offers a glimmer of hope in the predominant darkness and confusion. Musically, HOOBASTANK embodies all the elements of the post grunge scene. "Pieces" has rap metal verses coupled with dissonanttritone riffing which breaks away to piles of vocal harmonies in the choruses. The song that truly defines the Hoobastank sound is the aggro-pop anthem "Crawling In The Dark," a single that will have hard rock fans clamoring for this CD. SKU: 1071618

Raised On Radio
Journey: Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar, background vocals); Jonathan Cain (keyboards, background vocals). Additional personnel: Randy Jackson (bass); Steve Smith, Larrie Londin (drums); Randy Goodrum (background vocals). Recorded at Plant Studios, Saucalito, California and Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. After a three-year layoff, Journey returned with 1986's RAISED ON RADIO. Longtime drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory had left the band prior to the album's recording, leaving singer Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain to fend for themselves. While the album wasn't asbig a blockbuster as the band's previous few releases (ESCAPE, FRONTIERS, etc.), it did spawn such hit singles as "Girl Can't Help It" and "Be Good to Yourself." After a successful supporting tour wrapped up later in the year, Journey would go on hiatus for 10 years, until 1996's TRIAL BY FIRE. SKU: 1009802

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
2LPs on 1 CD. The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Porl Thompson (guitar, saxophone, keyboards); Lawrence Tolhurst (keyboards); Simon Gallup (bass); Boris Williams (drums, percussion). This hefty double album often sounds more like a compilation than a coherent whole, with musical ideas bouncing frantically back and forth. Nevertheless, in typical Cure style, KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME successfully combines catchy pop with bitter despair. Through 17 immensely sensual songs, Robert Smith is at his most poetic ("strange as angels, dancing in the deepest ocean, twisting in the water, you're just like a dream") and vitriolic ("get your fucking voice out of my head...I never wanted any of this, I wish you were dead"). The joyous pop of "Just Like Heaven" and "The Perfect Girl" still delights, and the frisson provided by "Shiver And Shake" reinforces the physical nature of this collection. SKU: 1019808

Changing Horses
The Incredible String Band includes: Robin Williamson, Mike Heron. The Incredible String Band's sixth album was released during the era when putting out two records a year was commonplace. CHANGING HORSES (1969) found the ensemble exhilarated by thespeed at which they were evolving. Though founders Robin Williamson and Mike Heron were still doing all the writing, they were now recording and performing as a quartet with the addition of their girlfriends Rose Simpson and Licorice McKenzie. Williamson's "Big Ted" opens the set and finds the band at its most rollicking. Other highlights include the jointly written (a rarity for Williamson and Heron) "Dust Be Diamonds," and the a capella spiritual "Sleepers Awake." "Creation," at 16 minutes in length, was the band's longest piece to date, and foreshadows Williamson's later solo work and story telling. SKU: 1060610

Amalgamut, The [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Filter: Richard Patrick (vocals, guitar, synchesizer, bass, drums, programming); Geno Lenardo (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Frank Cavanagh (bass); Steve Gillis (drums). Additional personnel: Rae DiLeo, Ben Grosse (programming). What began initially as a project by NIN alumnus Richard Patrick has developed into a real band. Formerly the sole composer, Patrickopened himself to collaborating with his bandmates on 1999's breakthrough, TITLE OF RECORD and the overwhelming response paved the way for a true band effort here. Guitarist Geno Lenardo adds dimensions and texture to Patrick's solid foundation, and the result is Filter hitting its creative stride with THE AMALGAMUT. As the title suggests, this musical mixture boasts impeccable production values (the walls of staggering, layered guitars and pristine drum sounds are to die for). "My Long Walk To Jail" boasts grisly chromatic riffing while "So I Quit" burns with punky verses. Built within Filter's industrial flavored aggro-metal are enough sucker-punch hooks ("Where Do We Go From Here" and "Columind") and power ballad pomp ("The Missing" and "God Damn Me ") to make their contemporaries take notice. A special treat for hardcore Filter fans, enhanced features of THE AMALGAMUT include a companion film, "Plague Of A Thousand Deceptions" (which ties in with the album concept), as well as internet links to exclusive live downloads and behind-the-scenes footage of the band's creative process. Bill Evans Trio 1964 [Remastered]
TRIO 64 contains 8 bonus cuts, comprising all the alternate takes found on the COMPLETE BILL EVANS ON VERVE box set. Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Gary Peacock (bass); Paul Motian (drums). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Michael Lang. Recorded at Webster Hall, New York, New York on December 18, 1963. Includes liner notes by Fred Hersch and Jack Maher. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Suha Gur (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. The conservatism that some perceive in the music of Bill Evans is countered by the fact that his records almost alwaysflew in the face of trends. When making his own recordings he was not a hard bopper, did not jump on the soul-jazz train and never threw song structure out the window. A chamber musician who just happened to dig jazz, Evans proved that formalism and sensitive pianistic touch had a place in music that swung. Bassist Gary Peaock comes up with consistently resourceful ways to push the time and tune along without resorting to straight walking. On drums, the irrepressible Paul Motian brings an enthusiam for tongue-in-cheek rhythmic toying that is contagious and evident throughout the CD. Interplay amongst these three on standards and oddities is highly personal without sacrificing the kinetic energy essential to great jazz. All in all there is a palpable geniality to this sesson recorded on one day in December '63. It is Evans and company in a decidedly extroverted, somewhat lighthearted mode. What other serious jazz musician would put "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" in their set and yield such felicitous results? SKU: 1001134

Yes Please
Fourplay: Nathan East (vocals, bass); Bob James (piano); Larry Carlton (guitar); Harvey Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Sherree, Chante Moore (vocals); Ken Freeman (programming). Recorded at Sear Sound and Remidi Sound, New York, New York; Larrabee East, Capitol Studios, and Pyramid Studios, Los Angeles, California. YES, PLEASE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. This is jazz lite, no doubt about it--the four storied musicians who make up Fourplay would be the first to tell you so. But YES, PLEASE is far from the overripe, cloying tones employed by so many "pop jazz" artists. Instead, it's full of subtlety, emotive, carefully considered solo statements, and tunes intended for more than coffee- commercial soundtrack music. Though he contributes the least in terms of original compositions, veteran guitarist Larry Carlton offers some of the most soulful playing here. His warm-but-precise tone is simultaneously organic and cerebral as he improvises over the alternately funky and balladic motifs of the tunes. Keyboardist Bob James provides the same indefatigable blend of catchiness and taste that's made him so successful for decades. The rhythm section of Harvey Mason and Nathan East, who've backed athousand contemporary jazz artists, keep the rhythms visceral without losing any of the more intimate nuances. SKU: 1045541
