Ideal
Ideal: PZ (vocals, various instruments); J-Dante, Maverick, Swab (vocals). Additional personnel: Jazze Pha (rap vocals, keyboards, bass, programming); Kira Gamble (spoken vocals); Dscantz (various instruments, programming); Jon-John (various instruments); Kevin Hicks (acoustic & electric guitars); Eric Jackson (guitar); Bryan-Michael Cox (piano, keyboards, programming); Teddy Bishop (keyboards, bass, programming); Laney Stewart (programming, sequencing); Ericka "Babydoll" Jerry, Johnta Austin (background vocals). Producers include: Dscantz, Jazze Pha, Laney Stewart, Teddy Bishop, Jon-John. Engineers include: Jazze Pha, Kevin "KD" Davis, Solomon Jackson. The eponymous debut album from R&B quartet Ideal stands apart from the pack. One reason for this is the group's unusual harmonic sophistication. Jazzy keyboards, Stevie Wonder-ish melodic turns, and a sophisticated, highly textured approach to arrangement serve to immediately distinguish Ideal from the teeming R&B masses. Naturally, another key to the group's sound is its vocals. PZ, J-Dante, Maverick, and Swab are equally adept at complex, Take 6-style harmonies, R. Kelly-esque love-man rhapsody/melisma, and a particularly unique, hip-hop-informed phrasing style that complements their jazzier harmonies with its off-the-beat rhythms. As with any self-respecting R&B outfit, the predominantsong subject is amour, but Ideal brings enough fresh sounds to the table to keep those potentially time-worn topics from sounding stale. Even In Darkness
Dungeon Family: Big Boi & Dre, Cee-Lo, Big Gipp, Khujo & T-Mo, Witchdoctor, Back-Bone, Cool Breeze. As part of the Outkast posse, this 14-strong southern hip-hop collective isguaranteed a certain amount of attention, but on EVEN IN DARKNESS they show that they've got enough talent and individuality to transcend the attendant hype. Like Outkast, the Dungeon Family makes use of intensely funky production and loopy, good-natured, decidedly non-gangsta humor a la P-Funk. But this isn't just Outkast, Jr. at work; the combined talents of Big Boi, cult hero Cee-Lo, Backbone, and all the rest make this a distinctive effort. With an inventive production sensibility that bears echoes not just of Outkast and P-Funk, but even of Prince, and a truly collective approach wherein the whole is even greater than the already-impressive sum of its parts, EVEN IN DARKNESS is accessible but sophisticated, fun but substantive, and one of the hip-hop highlights of 2001. Stay Sick
The Cramps: Lux Interior (vocals); Poison Ivy (guitar); Candy Del Mar (bass); Nick Knox (drums). All tracks have been digitallyremastered. After recruiting bass player Candy Del Mar, thus allowing Poison Ivy to get back to her guitar playing full time, the Cramps recorded their fourth studio album, STAY SICK. This record continues the tradition of Lux Interior's hysterically (in both senses) juvenile, and decidedly non-PC obsession with women (at least as far as they are presented in the most B-movie sense imaginable)--he even appears, along with drummer Nick Knox, in full drag on the cover art. Standouts include a sort-of-faithful cover of Carl Perkins "Her Love Rubbed Off," which appears in both studio and live versions, and a pair of propulsive rockers, "All Women are Bad"--with pounding drums and Interior spouting some amusing Biblical references in his patented jerking vocal style--and "Journey to the Center of a Girl"--a sort of companion to A DATE WITH ELVIS's "What's Inside a Girl," with Ivy's heavily-echoed guitar leading the way. Other highlights include a scorching, if somewhat bizarrely chosen, cover of the blues standard "Shortnin' Bread," the straight-ahead (as far as the Cramps can be straight-ahead) rockabilly of "Daisys Up Your Butterfly," and the distorted, surf homage "Saddle Up a Buzz Buzz." STAY SICK is a solid entry into the Cramps canon. SKU: 1017455

In A Soulful Mood
Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet); Charles McPherson (alto saxophone); Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone); Lonnie Hillyer, Ted Curson, Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Jimmy Knepper (trombone); Paul Bley, Nico Bunick, Tommy Flanagan (piano); Dannie Richmond, Jo Jones (drums). Recorded on October 20 and November 11, 1960. Includes liner notes by Roy Carr. Charles Mingus was a prolific composer, a driving bandleader, a great composer and bassist whose influence is still felt in jazz. His music embraces jazz's blues and gospel roots while reaching for the stars. Mingus music was stormy, volatile, romantic, heartfelt and melodically memorable, and his bands were "colleges" for too many jazz musicians to name. This budget-priced compilation collects some rare and not-so-rare recordings from 1960, originally on the Candid label. The contexts are quartet (with the legendary Eric Dolphy on altosax and bass clarinet) and an 8-piece band (featuring pianist Paul Bley and trumpet great Ted Curson). There are also tunes with jazz legends Roy Eldridge, Tommy Flanagan and Count Basie drummer Jo Jones that were only available on a rare compilation. The compositions range from very personalized, unsentimental versions of standards ("Body and Soul," "Stormy Weather"), Mingus classics ("Reincarnation Of A Love Bird") and little-heard gems ("Mysterious Blues"). IN A SOULFUL MOOD is a good way to get acquainted with one of American music's most vital figures. SKU: 1012505

Hush, The
Texas includes: Sharleen Spiteri (vocals); Johnny McElhone, Eddie Campbell, Ally McErlaine. Producers: Johnny McElhone, Rae & Christian, The Boilerhouse Boys. This sultry summer album from Texas proves that WHITE ON BLONDE, the band's triumphant return to the big stage in 1997, was no fluke. If anything, THE HUSH is even more assured, even more polished, and even more laden with the sort of catchy melodies and gorgeous textures that broughtTexas to the spotlight in the first place. Sharleen Spiteri has likened this album to Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS in terms of Texas' career development, and given her vocal performance it's hard to disagree. Try "Tell Me the Answer" for an extraordinary falsetto sound, fraught yet sensual. The British radio hits "Once in a Lifetime" and "When We Are Together" will get under your skin immediately with their Motown flavorings. The up-tempo hit "Summer Son" will set your toes tapping. Toward the end of the album, a more chilled, soulful side prevails in numbers like "Saint" and "The Day Before I Went Away." Production throughout is immaculate, with a sheen of strings and a collage of keyboard timbres. THE HUSH will leave a warm glow in your heart and a smile on your face! SKU: 1004646

Human Clay [ECD]
Creed: Mark Tremonti (vocals, guitar); Scott Stapp (vocals); Brian Marshall (bass); Scott Phillips (drums). "With Arms Wide Open" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song and was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo orGroup with Vocal. Creed's second album continues in the vein of MY OWN PRISON, combining heavy guitar rock with lyrics that aspire to something beyond standard rock & roll hedonism. There's plenty of head-banging riffs for lead singer Scott Stapp's Vedder-esque wail to ride over (although the band is surprising nimble considering how heavy it plays) and this time out there's also some softer stuff --"Say I," "Wrong Way"--with more than a hint of Led Zeppelin in its Middle-Eastern experimental mode. Even more surprising, there's actually a ballad here--"With Arms Wide Open"--with a wistfully beautiful melody. SKU: 1052361

New York Tendaberry [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Laura Nyro (vocals, piano); Jimmie Haskell (arranger, conductor). Recorded in 1968-69. Bonus tracks recorded in 1968 & 1971. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Laura Nyro, who died in 1997, found fame when her compositions were covered by other artists, including Blood, Sweat and Tears, Barbra Streisand, and the Fifth Dimension. Drawing inspiration from Broadway's Tin Pan Alley, R&B, and Brill Building acolytes Carole King and Ellie Greenwich, she wrote materialechoing these elements without ever sounding derivative. NEW YORK TENDABERRY shows her skills to full effect, combining brassy, up-tempo pop with plaintive, introspective musings. Nyro's emotional voice swoops and dives at will, emphasizing the intensity of her songwriting. Uncompromising and challenging, this album showcases the art of a painfully underrated performer. Appointment With His Majesty
Burning Band: Winston "Burning Spear" Rodney (vocals, congas, percussion); Lenval Jarrett (guitar); James Smith (trumpet); Nelson Miller (drums); Winston Rodney (congas, percussion); Num (percussion). Additional personnel: Rupert Bent, Beezy Coleman (guitar); Howard Messam, Tony Green (saxophone); Chico Chin (trumpet); Nambo Robinson (trombone); Robbie Lyn, Steven Stewart, Barry O'Hare (keyboards); Trevor McKenzie, Colin Elliot (bass); Tony Williams (drums); Sticky Thompson (percussion); Carol Passion, Edna Rodney, Rachell Bradshaw, Yvonne Patrick, Sharon Gordon, Lyn, Num Heru-ur Shutef Amon Tehu (background vocals). APPOINTMENT WITH HIS MAJESTY was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Burning Spear--also known as Winston Rodney--is an institution in the world of reggae. His fervent yet warm and soulful voice (similar to Bob Marley's, but deeper) and his insistence to keep his style of reggae close to its Afro-Caribbean roots have produced some of the music's finest albums. MAJESTY is from 1997, andthough it's more polished than his classic albums from the '70s (highly recommended: MAN IN THE HILLS or the compilation set REGGAE GREATS, both on Island), it's a fine, heartfelt, easygoing set of reggae. High points are "Play Jerry," a playful yet respectful tribute to the Grateful Dead's late guitarist/icon, Jerry Garcia; the proud devotional exhortation "Glory Be to Jah,"; and the soulful, '60s rhythm & blues-inspired "Don't Sell Out." Hard-core culture reggae fans might be put off by the smooth production here, but those new to reggae, as well as Burning Spear fans, will find a lot to groove on here. SKU: 4122654

Live [PA]
Initial pressings of BEN FOLDS LIVE will include a bonus DVD disc. Personnel includes: Ben Folds (vocals, piano); John McCrea (vocals). For his mid-2002 tour, unabashed popster and nouveau piano man Ben Folds decided to do "something a little different." Outside of occasional guest appearances, it was just Folds on stage with his wispy voice and his grand piano. However, as anyone who's ever seen Folds could imagine, the shows were far from stale or restrained or spare, but raucous and rousing and rowdy as the slight Folds relentlessly, torrentially pounded away at the keys and whipped the crowd into frenzy upon frenzy. BEN FOLDS LIVE, recorded at various spots on the tour, accurately captures this spirit. BEN FOLDS LIVE takesa cross-section of his budding career, drawing from both his first solo record, new songs, and his days fronting trio Ben Folds Five and makes some surprising choices. BF5 hits "Brick" and "Army" are featured, but the singles from the solo album are absent, as is the crowdpleasing "Song For The Dumped" (it does show up on the DVD with the first 100,000 copies). There is an organic feeling to the record, as on an improptu and downright beautiful version of "Emaline," and a faithful cover of the Elton John classic "Tiny Dancer." BEN FOLDS LIVE perfectly represents the raw energy of this distinctive singer-songwriter. SKU: 1076465

Buena Vista Social Club
Buena Vista Social Club: Compay Segundo (vocals, guitar, congas); Eliades Ochoa (vocals, guitar); Ibrahim Ferrer (vocals, bongos, clave); Ry Cooder (acoustic & electric slide guitars, guitar, oud, bolon, mbira, percussion); Ruben Gonzalez (piano). Additional personnel includes: Juan de Marcos Gonzalez (conductor, guiro, background vocals); Julio Alberto Fernandez (vocals, maracas); Manuel "Puntillita" Licea (vocals, congas); Omara Portuondo (vocals); Benito Suarez Magana (guitar); Barbarito Torres (laoud); Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal (trumpet); Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, Salvador Repilado Labrada (bass); Joachim Cooder (drums, udu drum, dumbeck, conga); Alberto "Virgillo" Valdes (maracas, background vocals). Recorded at Egrem Studios, Havana, Cuba, March, 1996. Includes liner notes by Nick Gold and Nigel Williamson. BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance. That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home andeggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction. SKU: 1007820

Invincible Summer [Digipak]
Personnel: K.D. Lang (vocals); Abe Laboriel, Jr. (vocals, guitar, bass, drums); David Piltch (guitar, mandolin, whistle, cornet, Moog synthesizer, keyboards, bass); Greg Leisz (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Damian LeGassick (guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin, Smokey Hormel, Jon Stewart (guitar); Ben Mink (violin, viola, keyboards); John Friesen (cello); Gayle Levant (harp); Teddy Borowiecki (accordion, keyboards); Jon Hassell (trumpet). Since abandoning the neo-country sound cultivated on her first three albums, K.D. Lang has spent the new few albums in chanteuse mode, poking around in a playland of sophisticated pop. On 2000's INVINCIBLE SUMMER, the Canadian songbird looks to a quote from Camus for the title and then loosens the reins considerably, putting together a collection of dreamy, Burt Bacharach-flavored songs reflective of her relocation from the Canadian hinterlands to sunny Southern California. Teaming with William Orbit protege Damian leGassick, Lang conjures up 11 tracks soaked in an aura of ambiance. Among the elementslacing these songs are hints of bossa nova ("Suddenly"), quirky pop goosed along by Eurodisco string arrangements ("It's Happening with You") and a swirling mix of Lang's sultry vocals in a homage to Roy Orbison ("Love's Great Ocean"). Throughout all of SUMMER, the thread that ties all these songs together is love, ranging from how uncomplicated it can be (the sparsely arranged "Simple") to the yearning felt for a secret love (the lush "When We Collide"). Best of all is "What Better Said," a sinewy song awash in electronic beeps and beats that finds Lang waiting for a reciprocated declaration of love. SKU: 1034036

R.E.M.: Mike Mills (vocals, accordion, bass); Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar, mandolin, drums); Bill Berry (mandolin, drums). Additional personnel: Bucky Baxter (pedal steel guitar); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Keith LeBlanc (percussion). GREEN contains an unlisted 11th track. The album that found the band sandwiched between being an important cult band on the verge of major success and being the world's most successful rock band of the 90s. A tricky situation, but this album made the breakthroughand mighty Warner Brothers were behind it. R.E.M. were able to get their folky mandolin material like 'You Are The Everything' accepted on an equal footing with great pop such as 'Stand' or 'Pop Song 89' (which could have been written by Jim Morrison and titled 'Hello I Love You'). 'Orange Crush' is already an FM radio favourite, and the rest is all recent history. SKU: 1001249

Real Ramona, The
Throwing Muses: Kristin Hersh, Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar); Fred Abong (bass guitar); David Narcizo (drums); Kristin Rojcewicz (background vocals). Throwing Muses are among the finest and most overlooked indie-rock bands of the '80s and '90s. Spearheaded by the dark, original vision of Kristen Hersh (and supported by Tanya Donelly, Muses second-guitarist and Hersh's half-sister), the band's aggressive alt-pop burst onto the scene in the early '80s. The Muses favor a lucid guitar sound, oblique, poetic lyrics, and spiraling song structures that seem to unfold organically. By THE REAL RAMONA, the band's third full-length release, they had married their unique aesthetic to a more streamlined, rock-oriented sound. Though more accessible than earlier work, RAMONA compromises none of the group's idiosyncratic appeal. In fact, this record's shimmering pop aura makes it one of the band's most outstanding offerings. From the blast-off power hooks of "Golden Thing" and Donelly's "Not Too Soon" through the gorgeous, rarefied guitar heaven of "Two Step," this collection is pure psychedelic pop heightened by outstanding songcraft. As usual, itis Hersh's more intense, mercurial, and slightly warped songs that are stand out. Here, top marks go to "Ellen West" and "Hook In Her Head. A tapestry of floating guitars, hard edges, melody, and meaning, THE REAL RAMONA is a perfect pop album. SKU: 1059915

False Accusations
Robert Cray Band: Robert Cray (vocals, guitar); Peter Boe (keyboards); Richard Cousins(bass); David Olson (drums). Additional personnel: Dale Wilson (guitar); David II (tenor saxophone); Nolan Smith (trumpet); Dennos Walker (bass). Recorded at Sage & Sound, Music Lab & Haywood's, Los Angeles, California. Robert Cray's third album is also his first great one. The production is vastly superior, finally allowing one to hear what a gorgeous tone Cray gets on the guitar. His singing is relaxed and assured, and the songs, originals by Cray and his bandmates, are sensational. FALSE ACCUSATIONS comes across as a concept album about infidelity and guilt. Everything clicks here, but the best songs are slow burners such as "Porch Light" and "Playin' in the Dirt," where Cray's solos are little marvels of concision and passionate intensity. "I've Slipped Her Mind," a gospel-tinged ballad about being stood up, is an instant classic. Cray turns the number into a virtuoso soul workout that stands with the best of Otis Redding or James Brown. SKU: 1019739

Best Of 1990-2000, The
U2: The Edge (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bono (vocals, guitar); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen (drums, percussion). Producers include: Steve Lillywhite, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, William Orbit, U2. Recorded between 1990 & 2000. The decade of the 1990's was an era of transition for the legendary quartet from Dublin known to the world as U2. An earlier (and more serious) body of work gave way to albums such as POP and ZOOROPA, which radiated the band's positivity and energy in a more lighthearted fashion. THE BEST OF 1990-2000 culls the benchmark tracks from the band's studio albums ("One," "The First Time," "Beautiful Day"), as well as key movie soundtrack cuts ("Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," "Miss Sarajevo"). While some diehards cooled their passion for the band in the height of their glitz and glamour, experiencing "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" shows the band stripped down to perfection in their most basic and graceful state. THE BEST OF goes even further, luring collectors with new tracks ("Electrical Storm," "The Hands That Built America") as well as new mixes of"Numb" and "Discotheque." SKU: 1076464

Samples include "Hip Hug Her" (as performed by Booker T. & The MGs). RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS: THE DIRTY VERSION was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "I'll grab the mic and I'll damage ya," boasts Ol' Dirty Bastard on his debut. Along with his producer, The RZA, the man with no father to his style has crafted a fine record, both solid and experimental--a Wu-Tang Clan solo project that can stand alongside the group's groundbreaking album. Whether crooning "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" mid-song or speaking in tongues, ODB constantly stretches the limits of what an MC sounds like. He explodes mid-sentence with exclamations, repeatedly punctuating his "Brooklyn Zoo" with a menacing "What?!" He may be unpredictable, but for the most part he's good-natured. For fans of the Wu, this is a must have, truly a RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS. But ODB is not just filling the void until the next Wu-Tang album; |
