The eponymous debut album from R&B quartet Ideal stands apart from the pack. One reason for this is the group's unusual harmonic sophistication. With an inventive production sensibility that bears echoes not just of Outkast and P-Funk, but even of Prince, and a truly collective approach wherein the whole is even greater than the already-impressive sum of its parts, EVEN IN DARKNESS is accessible but sophisticated, fun but substantive, and one of the hip-hop highlights of 2001.

After recruiting bass player Candy Del Mar, thus allowing Poison Ivy to get back to her guitar playing full time, the Cramps recorded their fourth studio album, STAY SICK. This record continues the tradition of Lux Interior's hysterically (in both senses) juvenile, and decidedly non-PC obsession with women (at least as far as they are presented in the most B-movie sense imaginable)--he even appears, along with drummer Nick Knox, in full drag on the cover art.
Standouts include a sort-of-faithful cover of Carl Perkins "Her Love Rubbed Off," which appears in both studio and live versions, and a pair of propulsive rockers, "All Women are Bad"--with pounding drums and Interior spouting some amusing Biblical references in his patented jerking vocal style--and "Journey to the Center of a Girl"--a sort of companion to A DATE WITH ELVIS's "What's Inside a Girl," with Ivy's heavily-echoed guitar leading the way. Other highlights include a scorching, if somewhat bizarrely chosen, cover of the blues standard "Shortnin' Bread," the straight-ahead (as far as the Cramps can be straight-ahead) rockabilly of "Daisys Up Your Butterfly," and the distorted, surf homage "Saddle Up a Buzz Buzz." STAY SICK is a solid entry into the Cramps canon.

Charles Mingus was a prolific composer, a driving bandleader, a great composer and bassist whose influence is still felt in jazz. His music embraces jazz's blues and gospel roots while reaching for the stars. Mingus music was stormy, volatile, romantic, heartfelt and melodically memorable, and his bands were "colleges" for too many jazz musicians to name. This budget-priced compilation collects some rare and not-so-rare recordings from 1960, originally on the Candid label. The contexts are quartet (with the legendary Eric Dolphy on altosax and bass clarinet) and an 8-piece band (featuring pianist Paul Bley and trumpet great Ted Curson).
There are also tunes with jazz legends Roy Eldridge, Tommy Flanagan and Count Basie drummer Jo Jones that were only available on a rare compilation. The compositions range from very personalized, unsentimental versions of standards ("Body and Soul," "Stormy Weather"), Mingus classics ("Reincarnation Of A Love Bird") and little-heard gems ("Mysterious Blues"). IN A SOULFUL MOOD is a good way to get acquainted with one of American music's most vital figures.

Creed's second album continues in the vein of MY OWN PRISON, combining heavy guitar rock with lyrics that aspire to something beyond standard rock & roll hedonism. Burning Spear--also known as Winston Rodney--is an institution in the world of reggae. His fervent yet warm and soulful voice (similar to Bob Marley's, but deeper) and his insistence to keep his style of reggae close to its Afro-Caribbean roots have produced some of the music's finest albums. MAJESTY is from 1997, andthough it's more polished than his classic albums from the '70s (highly recommended: MAN IN THE HILLS or the compilation set REGGAE GREATS, both on Island), it's a fine, heartfelt, easygoing set of reggae.
High points are "Play Jerry," a playful yet respectful tribute to the Grateful Dead's late guitarist/icon, Jerry Garcia; the proud devotional exhortation "Glory Be to Jah,"; and the soulful, '60s rhythm & blues-inspired "Don't Sell Out." Hard-core culture reggae fans might be put off by the smooth production here, but those new to reggae, as well as Burning Spear fans, will find a lot to groove on here.

Throwing Muses are among the finest and most overlooked indie-rock bands of the '80s and '90s. Spearheaded by the dark, original vision of Kristen Hersh (and supported by Tanya Donelly, Muses second-guitarist and Hersh's half-sister), the band's aggressive alt-pop burst onto the scene in the early '80s. The Muses favor a lucid guitar sound, oblique, poetic lyrics, and spiraling song structures that seem to unfold organically. Though more accessible than earlier work, RAMONA compromises none of the group's idiosyncratic appeal. From the blast-off power hooks of "Golden Thing" and Donelly's "Not Too Soon" through the gorgeous, rarefied guitar heaven of "Two Step," this collection is pure psychedelic pop heightened by outstanding songcraft. As usual, itis Hersh's more intense, mercurial, and slightly warped songs that are stand out. Here, top marks go to "Ellen West" and "Hook In Her Head. A tapestry of floating guitars, hard edges, melody, and meaning, THE REAL RAMONA is a perfect pop album.

Robert Cray's third album is also his first great one. The production is vastly superior, finally allowing one to hear what a gorgeous tone Cray gets on the guitar. His singing is relaxed and assured, and the songs, originals by Cray and his bandmates, are sensational.
FALSE ACCUSATIONS comes across as a concept album about infidelity and guilt. Everything clicks here, but the best songs are slow burners such as "Porch Light" and "Playin' in the Dirt," where Cray's solos are little marvels of concision and passionate intensity. "I've Slipped Her Mind," a gospel-tinged ballad about being stood up, is an instant classic. Cray turns the number into a virtuoso soul workout that stands with the best of Otis Redding or James Brown.

"I'll grab the mic and I'll damage ya," boasts Ol' Dirty Bastard on his debut. Along with his producer, The RZA, the man with no father to his style has crafted a fine record, both solid and experimental--a Wu-Tang Clan solo project that can stand alongside the group's groundbreaking album. Whether crooning "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" mid-song or speaking in tongues, ODB constantly stretches the limits of what an MC sounds like. He'll damage your sensibilities, perhaps even your speakers--but remember, no pain no gain.
The success of hip-hop albums often rests on the character of a rapper; and though Ol' Dirty Bastard may not have the pure skills of Method Man, his persona is as complex as it gets. "The reason why I curse is cause my momma and daddy, they grew up cursing, so please respect my style," he states, demonstrating awareness of his image. The image is important: a staggering, foul-mouthed street urchin, ODB balances his braggadacio with humility (at least twice, he thanks us for listening). He explodes mid-sentence with exclamations, repeatedly punctuating his "Brooklyn Zoo" with a menacing "What?!" He may be unpredictable, but for the most part he's good-natured.
For fans of the Wu, this is a must have, truly a RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS. But ODB is not just filling the void until the next Wu-Tang album;
