Metal Works [Remastered]
Judas Priest: Rob Halford (vocals); Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing (guitar); Ian Hill (bass). Additional personnel: Simon Phillips, Les Binks, Dave Holland, Scott Travis (drums). Producers include: Judas Priest, Roger Glover, James Guthrie, Dennis Mackay, Tom Allom. Includes liner notes by Neil Jeffries & Judas Priest. Let'smake this simple--if you want to hear some of the toughest heavy metal ever recorded, this double-disc 1993 Judas Priest career overview does it. The Priest will forever hold its place as the decisive metal outfit of the era, as shown by any selection here. METAL WORKS '73-'93 is an exceptionally well-balanced compilation. For every "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," "Living After Midnight," and "Breaking the Law," it includes such often-overlooked gems as "Dissident Aggressor," "Beyond the Realms of Death," and "Sinner." The band's look--metal-studded wrist bands, head bands, and motorcycle jackets--may inspire listeners to don similar gear while listening to such thrashers as "Painkiller," "Electric Eye," "Metal Gods," "Freewheel Burning," and "Headin' Out to the Highway." Slim Shady LP, The (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Personnel includes: Eminem, Kristie Abete Swift, Dina Rae (vocals); Richard "Segal" Huredia (spoken vocals); Jeff Bass (various instruments); Mel-Man, DJ Head, Denine Porter (drum programming); Paul "Bunyan" Rosenberg, Zoe Winkler, Marky Bass, Aristotle, Royce Da 5-9. Producers include: Dr. Dre, M. Mathers, Marky Bass, Jeff Bass, Mel Man. Engineers include: Blumpy, Aaron Lepley, Alan Mason. THE SLIM SHADY LP won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "My Name Is" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. You'll need a well-developed sense of humor to fully appreciate the debut of Eminem a.k.a. Slim Shady. Produced by hip-hop super-producer Dr. Dre andreleased on Dre's Aftermath Records, the album features an infectious lead single, "My Name Is," a winning mixture of alternative rock and rap. One listen will have you hooked on the chorus, but future plays will reveal the lyrical gymnastics that Eminem kicks out so effortlessly. Obsessed with fantasies of sex, violence, drugs and a general depraved indifference to life itself, Eminem's alter ego Slim Shady is constantly involved in a battle of good vs. evil leavened by a high degree of irony. You'll need a few listens to absorb everything that Eminem is about lyrically. SLIM SHADY might offend the faint-hearted, but that's probably Eminem's intention. SKU: 1036484

Poetic Champions Compose [Remastered]
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica, alto saxophone); Mick Cox (guitar); Martin Drover (trumpet, flugelhorn); Neil Drinkwater (piano, synthesizer); Steve Bearce (bass); Roy Jones (drums, percussion); Paul Ridout (programming); June Boyce (background vocals). Digitally remastered by Ian Cooper (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). With as self-explanatory a title as this, it seems there's little need to elaborate. For what it's worth, this is Morrison at the height of his '80s spiritual phase, and he delves deeply and poignantly into the twin rivers of theology and mysticism. Ever the spiritual nomad, Morrison's worldview combines his Catholic upbringing with the Buddhism that was a key element of the Beat writers who were among his early inspirations. Thus, we have Morrison waxing reverential like some blues-driven preacher on the redemptive "Did Ye Get Healed?" and digging deeper into the mystic on "Alan Watts Blues," whose title refers to the Buddhism-based British author/philosopher.Typical of his recordings from this period, Morrison shies away from his R&B roots in favor of a kind of Celtic/New Age/Pop amalgam. And it's only a musical master as adept as Morrison that's capable of making such a confluence intriguing. SKU: 1005291

Emerson Drive
Emerson Drive: Brad Mates (vocals); Pat Allingham (acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, background vocals); Danick Dupelle (acoustic & electric guitar, background vocals); Chris Hartman (acoustic guitar, piano, organ, synthesizer); Jeff Loberg (bass, background vocals); Mike Melancon (drums, percussion, loops). Producers: Julian King, James Stroud, Richard Marx. Principally recorded at Ocean Way, Nashville, Tennessee. If you're expecting range-riding, honky-tonk traditionalism from Canadian country act EMERSON DRIVE, you're in for a bit of a surprise. Unlike so many contemporary country artists, EMERSONDRIVE doesn't tart up tired country formulas with a few pop tricks and call it something new. Instead they go the decidedly more difficult route of actually creating something new. The various members of the band all sport various rock, country, and pop influences, and everything gets its fair shake in their sound. The wide-open vocal harmonies and carefully arranged electric guitars suggest that Emerson Drive has listened to the Eagles more than once, but in their harder-rocking moments they leave mellow '70s country-rock behind for something entirely more modern (though equally radio-friendly). They toss off a mean pop-country ballad as well, giving the ladies a little something over which to swoon (not counting the photogenic mugs of these young bucks, that is). SKU: 1074514

Sonic Trance
Personnel: Nicholas Payton (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, bass, drum); Tim Warfield (soprano & tenor saxophone); Kevin Hays (vocals, recorder, keyboards, piano); Vincente Archer (bass); Adonis Rose (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion); Karriem Riggins (samples). Recorded at Right Track Studios, New York, New York. SONIC TRANCE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton spent the 1990s getting in touch with his roots by diggingdeeply into the work of Louis Armstrong, as well as composing music inspired by the Satchmo sound. He was seen as the savior of trad jazz lovers, but with SONIC TRANCE, Payton leaves the past behind at last, moving both feet firmly into the future. In place of old-school ways, Payton surrounds his always-inspired trumpet playing with funk and hip-hop beats, samplers, and a variety of synthesizers and assorted electric keyboards. Not only does Payton place himself in new sonic settings, he alters the sound of his own trumpet through a variety of effects, so that his already-impressive improvisational voice is given new avenues to explore. New arrival Kevin Hays proves to be a perfect foil for Payton, coating his emotive exhortations in attractive musical raiment, by turns dreamy and urgent. Instead of an out-and-out fusion of jazz and electronic a la Matthew Shipp's work on the Thirsty Ear label, this is essentially a contemporary jazz recording that bears echoes of Miles Davis's '70s experimentalism while still looking towards tomorrow. Bad [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals); Stevie Wonder (vocals, keyboards); The Winans (vocals); David Williams, Eric Gale, Steve Stevens, Bill Bottrell, Dann Huff, Michael Landau, Paul Jackson Jr. (guitar); Larry Williams (saxophone, keyboards, programming); Kim Hutchcroft (saxophone); Gary Grant, Jerry Hey (trumpet); John Barnes (piano, keyboards); Kevin Maloney (piano); Jimmy Smith (Hammond organ); Christopher Currell, Michael Boddicker, David Paich, Greg Phillinganes, Rhett Lawrence, Glen Ballard, Randy Kerber, Denny Jaeger (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Ollie E. Brown (drums, percussion); John Robinson, Ndugu Chancler, Miko Brando, Humberto Gatica, Bruce Swedien (drums); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); Douglas Getschal, Cornelius Mims, Eric Persing,Steve Porcaro, Casey Young (programming). Recorded at Westlake Audio Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic (40600). Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California). Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Regardless of his press, history clearly shows that he has made a lot of people very, very happy. SKU: 1067372

Instrumentals
Mouse On Mars: Jan St. Werner, Andi Toma. Recorded between 1995 and 1997. Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner, the men behind Mouse On Mars, have a rare talent for accessible eccentricity. Their playful electronic concoctions, full of bulbous noises and weirdly wired rhythms, slap a broad, beaming grin on the occasionally dour face of digital music. Perhaps no other outfit frolics as nimbly between dance music, pop, and pure experimentation. Originally a vinyl-only release, INSTRUMENTALS tips the balance toward experimentation. These seven tracks, while less immediate than much of the Mouse On Mars canon, are among the duo's finest productions. Abstract opener "Auto Orchestra" offers a galactic vision painted with radiation. "Owai" and "Chromantic" are doses of deep digi-disco dub in the vibrant mold of the band's classic IAORA TAHITI. The subdued electro of "Pegel Gesetzi" unravels like a topological conundrum. "Rompatroullie" is the duo's delightful jitter-pop tribute to "Space Patrol" soundmeister Peter Thomas's futuristic TV scores. "1001" and "Subnubus," culled from compilations dedicated to Gilles Deleuze, unfold a thousand onion-like layers of rhizoid sound and melody in a fantastically nonlinear fashion. Only Toma and St. Werner could have turned the French philosopher's heady de-territorialization theories into such nifty, knottyanti-techno anthems. SKU: 1043897

Touch Of Platinum Vol.2, A (A Life In Music)
A TOUCH OF PLATINUM VOLUME 2 is a 2-CD or 2-cassette set of 44 tracks culled from the box set ELVIS PRESLEY PLATINUM: A LIFE IN MUSIC. Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Hal Blaine, Charlie McCoy, Charlie Hodge, Tommy Tedesco, James Burton (guitar). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Engineers include: Dennis Ferrante, James Nichols, BonesHowe. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. You probably think you've heard all there is to hear from The King, what with countless Elvis retrospectives, anthologies and reissues flooding the market. While PLATINUM: A LIFE IN MUSIC is far from the first Elvis box, it's unique in that it's composed largely of previously unreleased material. Four discs cover every phase of Presley's career, from young Memphis hip-shaker to middle-aged Vegas hip-shaker, adding a fresh perspective to each period. For the budget-conscious, this two-discer is a solid condensation of that project, the other half of the material being released on a companion volume. It's both an education and a kick to hear alternate versions of Elvis songs already ingrained in the public consciousness. Other, more obscure delights update one of rock & roll's most stellar legacies, proving that even the most zealous Elvis fan hasn't heard the whole story yet. SKU: 1001005

Like Someone In Love
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Ted Nash (alto saxophone); Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Frank DeVol and his Orchestra. Includes liner notes by Francis Davis. Digitally remastered by Andrew Nicholas (Polygram Studios). This is part of Polygram's Jazz Vocal Classics series. An album of sensitive arrangements by the underrated Frank DeVol, this collection was staple diet for 50s lounge romantics. Perched with a martini and a cherry in one of those triangular glasses, this is immaculate music. Fitzgerald stepped outside the pattern of recording the Songbook seriesand used some lesser-known writers. Both "Hurry Home," by Meyer, Emmerick and Bernier, and "Night Wind," by Rothberg and Pollock, are strong tracks. She later re-recorded "How Long Has This Been Going On," while the title track is so perfect it could never be done again. The CD reissue has four bonus tracks to make this a collection by which to propose marriage. SKU: 1006618

Resurrection
Halford: Rob Halford (vocals); Mike Chlasciak, Patrick Lachman (guitar); Ray Riendeau (bass); BobbyJarzombeck (drums). Additional personnel: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Ed Ross (keyboards); Pete Parada (drums). Engineers include: Billy Bowers, Roy Z, Bill Cooper. Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California; Silver Cloud, Burbank, California; American Recording, Calabasas, California; Bauhaus Studios, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Here the ex- Judas Priest banshee gives the fans what they've been craving for nearly a decade--a return to his classic metal roots. After the brutal metal of FIGHT and the industrial experimentation of TWO, Rob Halford seems to have finally purged himself and is once again delivering the goods. The thunderous title track heralds the finest material he's come up with since Judas Priest's DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH. "Silent Screams" utilizes the songwriting talents of Alice Cooper and Union producer Bob Marlette for a killer tune that features Halford's lower register dubbed over his famously piercing high notes, to mighty effect. "Made in Hell" tells of the birth of Halford's addiction to metal music, and his subsequent worldwide spreading of the gospel, while "The One You Love to Hate" has him paired with Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, reason alone to purchase this album. (The two came together through Roy Z, who produced RESURRECTION as well as three of Dickinson's solo efforts.) Whatever career missteps Rob Halford may have made in the alternative-drenched '90s, with RESURRECTION he's redeemed himself. Get the leather and spiked bracelets out of the closet. SKU: 1039879

Elvis Presley
This 1999 reissue contains six bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore,Chet Atkins (guitar); Floyd Cramer, Shorty Long, Marvin Hughes (piano); Bill Black (bass); D.J. Fontana, Johnny Bernero (drums); Ben Speer, Brock Speer, Gordon Stoker (background vocals). Reissue producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Engineers: Sam Phillips, Bob Ferris, Ernie Oehlrich. Includes liner notes by Colin Scott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When Elvis first broke on the national scene, nobody--not RCA, not Elvis' manager Colonel Tom Parker, and certainly not Elvis himself--had any idea how long his popularity would last. Most assumed that rock and roll was a passing fad and that Presley would soon be relegated to the "where are they now?" bin. Unsurprisingly, RCA rushed Presley's first album to market before Elvis had recorded enough new material for an entire record. The result, ELVIS PRESLEY, is a cut-and-paste job consisting of seven RCA recordings and five older tracks licensed from Sun Records, Presley's first label. Still, this is a monumental record in the history of rock and roll, from its iconic cover (which The Clash later paid homage to on the cover of LONDON CALLING) to the twelve great tracks to its unprecedented sales figures (it topped the Billboard album charts for 20 weeks). The RCA material includes Elvis' arrangement of "Blue Suede Shoes" and covers of R&B hits "Money Honey," "Tutti Frutti," and "I Got a Woman." The record is short (29 minutes) and the material it contains is available on lots of other discs, but if you must have the record that started a revolution, this is the one to get. SKU: 1002594

Blue Moves
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, harpsichord); Davey Johnstone (guitar, mandolin); Caleb Quaye (guitar); Michael Hurwirz (cello); David Sanborn (saxophone); Barry Rogers, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker (horns); James Newton-Howard (piano, organ, synthesizer); Kenny Pasarrelli (bass); Roger Pope (drums); Ray Cooper (percussion); The Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Choir, Southern California Community Choir, Bruce Johnston, Graham Nash, Curt Becher, Clark Burroughs, Joe Chemay, Jon Joyce, Cindy Bullens, Ron Hicklin, Toni Tennille, David Crosby, Gene Morford (background vocals). Engineers include: Gus Dudgeon, John Kurtlander, Earl Mankey. Recorded at Eastern Sound, Toronto,Canada. Includes liner notes by Gus Dudgeon. All tracks have been digitally remastered by Gus Dudgeon. Despite the inclusion of these and other heart-wrenching compositions like "Tonight," John's irrepressible upbeat attitude comes to the fore on tracks such as the Caleb Quaye instrumental "Your Starter For..." and "One Horse Town," a peppy song about life in the rural South. Most gratifying is a collaboration with the Reverend James Cleveland and his Southern California Choir on the funky "Boogie Pilgrim." SKU: 1001423

Digimortal [Digipak]
This limited edition Digipak version of DIGIMORTAL contains four bonus tracks. Fear Factory: Burton C. Bell (vocals); Dino Cazares (guitar); Christian Oloe Wolbers (bass, background vocals); Raymond Herrera (drums). Additional personnel includes: B-Real (rap vocals); Jordan Plotnikoff (spoken vocals); Rhys Fulber, John Bechdel (keyboards). Recorded at Ocean Studio, Burbank, California from Spetember 30-November 4, 2000. Fear Factory was a pioneer of new metal long before the sub-genre took shape and found its name. With DIGIMORTAL, its fourth full-length release of new material, the band revisits its brand of thinking-man's sci-fi themes and painstakingly executed musicianship. Here, the battle between man and technology finds man broken, but not beaten. In "Linchpin" and "No One" the band resolves to escape from the machines that have enslaved mankind, though these songs are faint glimmers of hope against a bleak prophecy that finds technology the new dominant paradigm. Musically, the band has grown, retaining its brutally syncopated rhythms while adding some tasty hooks and clean, melodic vocals, particularly in "Invisible Wounds." "Acres of Skin" will please thrash metal fans, while "Back the Fuck Up," featuring B. Real, is the album's metal/hip-hop showpiece. SKU: 1057071

Wings At The Speed Of Sound
Wings: Paul McCartney (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, percussion); Denny Laine (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jimmy McCulloch (vocals, guitar); Linda McCartney (vocals, keyboards); Joe English (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Chet Atkins (electric guitar); Lloyd Green (slide & pedal steel guitar); Bobby Thompson (banjo); Johnny Gimble (fiddle); Bill Puitt (clarinet, saxophone); Thaddeus Richard (saxophone, horns); Norman Ray (baritone saxophone); Don Sheffield, George Tidwell, Barry McDonald (trumpet); Dennis Good, Dale Quillen (trombone); Tony Dorsey, Steve Howard, Howie Casey (horns); Floyd Cramer (piano); Geoff Britton (drums). Recorded at EMI/Abbey Road Studios, England in 1976; Bonus tracks recorded at The Soundshop, Nashville, Tennesse. It's widely accepted that McCartney was never the serious artiste that Lennon was; he never claimed to be, and more importantly (as this album bears out) never needed to be. This 1976 recording found McCartney and Wings at their peak. It's full of glimmering pop gems more concerned with infectious hooks and unforgettable melodies than social relevance. The opener "Let 'Em In" is almost childlike in its simplicity, and is effective precisely because of that lack of premeditation. "Cook of the House" and "Wino Junko" are good fun, conveying a loose sense of mirth that's both appealing and contagious. The highlight of the album is the near-manifesto "Silly Love Songs," in which Paul makes a case for theeverlasting appeal of said compositions, and after a listen to AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, you can't help but see it his way. Duets
Personnel includes: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Willie Nelson, George Jones, Don Williams, Ricky Skaggs, Earl Thomas Conley, Dolly Parton, John Denver, Roy Orbison, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, The Band, The Desert Rose Band, Southern Pacific. Producers include: Gram Parsons, Randy Scruggs, John Denver, Don Williams, Robbie Robertson. Emmylou Harris first broke on the national music scene as the duet partner of Gram Parsons, the legendary progenitor of country rock. Vocal duets (and trios, for that matter) have played a prominent role in Harris' music ever since. DUETS collects 12 of Harris' better-known vocal collaborations, including a number thathad never before been released under her name. Like all such collections, DUETS varies considerably from track to track, both in production values and artistic merit. What remains constant throughout, however, is the quality of Harris' contributions. Whether pitching in on Neil Young's mystical "Star of Bethlehem" or Earl Thomas Conley's treacly "We Believe in Happy Endings," Harris provides stellar support. While some of these tracks are available on must-own Harris albums ("Green Pastures," for example, appears on Harris' remarkable ROSES IN THE SNOW), others, are culled from soundtracks and albums released by Harris' duet partners. Accordingly, DUETS is a very convenient package for Harris fans looking to gather all of Harris' recordings without having to buy, say, an entire John Denver album. While not the place to begin an Emmylou Harris collection, DUETS does provide an interesting glimpse at one aspect of a great artist's career. SKU: 5046659

Chase The Cat
Personnel includes: Too Short, Trick Daddy, E-40, Eric Sermon, Scarface, The Eastsiders, Daz, MC Breed, Big Tigger, Jazze Pha, Murda, Packy, Kokane, Dolla Will, B-Legit, Ant Banks, George Clinton, Baby DC. Producers include: SBX, Daz Dillinger, Todd Shaw, Meech Wells, Taj "Mahal" Tilghman. Engineers include: Xavier Hargrove, Yaku Allen, Robin Mays. When it comes to being a pimp and a playa, Too Short wrote the book (or at least made the record), and considering his sustained success, he doesn't seem prepared to go away anytime soon. Whether you love him (hardcore hip-hop heads) or hate him (the majority of the female population), Too Short is apparently here to stay. CHASE THE CAT pretty much picks up where hip-hop's favorite pimp leftoff on his previous efforts, as it's full of no-holds-barred evocations of the ultra-misogynistic pimp lifestyle backed up by the kind of thick, funky beats that must surely appeal even to those who abhor the social irresponsibility of Too Short's rhymes (it's not for nothing that P-Funk high priest makes a guest appearance on the colorfully titled "U Stank." Fever To Tell [ECD]
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Karen O (vocals); Nick Zinner (guitar, drum machine); Brian Chase (drums). Producers: David Andrew Sitek, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Recorded at Headgear, Brooklyn, New York. Punky New York scions the Yeah Yeah Yeahs may have been strapped with an unfortunate albatross by receiving Next Big Thing status in the wake of the supernova explosion of the Strokes, the White Stripes, et al. However, if one hasn't already heard either of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs excellent Touch & Go EPs or witnessed one of the outfit's electric live shows, one listen to FEVER TO TELL should swiftly dispel any doubts about the trio's credibility. Visuallyoutrageous singer Karen O., primal drummer Brian Chase and devilish guitarist Nick Zinner take an artier-than-most approach to the garage-rock world; think the Velvet Underground as channeled through the Fall or Sonic Youth with just a wisp of the Pretenders. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' music explodes in a sea of overt sexuality and frenzied emotion, hinting at hooks and sometimes even getting totally enveloped in them, as on the disarmingly charming "Maps." On the other end of the spectrum lies the raw MC 5 full-on punk-blues of tracks such as "Man" and "Tick." On FEVER TO TELL, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs prove their ability to stand out in a crowd, offering perhaps the most original recording to be hailed in the '00s garage-rock revival. SKU: 1082466

Antics
Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. The title of Interpol's second album, ANTICS, may conjure up images of carefree adventure, but anyone familiar with the New York City band's brooding post-punk sound knows that there's nothing lighthearted about their music. Although it's not a radical departure, ANTICS does reveal a broadening of the group's sonic palette. The opening track, "Next Exit," is a slowly building, piano-laden anthem, marked by singer Paul Banks's remarkably widened vocal range and strangely hopeful lyrics. Clearly the group is eager to move beyond the endless Joy Division comparisons they previously garnered, and this bid works to wonderful effect. Of course, many of the elements that made their debut, TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, so entrancing--soaring guitar riffs, tight bass lines, frenetic drumming--are still present, particularly on "Narc" and "Slow Hands," but even these tracks aren't merely content to repeat past glories. A solid album that improves upon its predecessor, ANTICS sees Interpol shaking off the mixed blessing of beingthe Next Big Thing, and hitting a new creative stride. SKU: 6572677

Collection, The
'The Collection' is a comprehensive one disc release featuring the most popular tracks by the late Barry White, who passed away in July 2003. Fourteen of the sixteen tracks featured here reached the top20 of the UK music charts. SKU: 3103887

On
Imperial Teen: Roddy Bottum, Will Schwartz (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jone Stebbins (vocals, bass); Lynn Perko (vocals, drums, percussion). Producers: Steve MacDonald, Anna Waronker, Imperial Teen. Engineers: Steven McDonald, Anna Waronker, Richard Barron. With their third album, 2002's ON, Imperial Teen continues its transformation into the indie rock world's premier '80s-pop revivalists. Although a few tracks, notably the stuttering "Baby," recall the glammy rock bounce of the best parts of their uneven earlier records (not to mention producer Steven McDonald's old band Redd Kross), most of ON has a decided synth-pop texture. Herky-jerky rhythms, stuttering guitar lines and burbling vintage synths run through most of these songs, and drummer Lynn Perko has a newfound high register to her voice that makes her sound like she's channeling either the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin or Pylon's Vanessa Briscoe. Perko's vocal interplay with singer/songwriter Roddy Bottum is, as always, the key to these songs, but Bottum's solo vocals are much improved. He probably couldn't have pulled off a song like the dreamy, OMD-like "Sugar" on Imperial Teen's earlier albums. ON is the album where Imperial Teen finally got it right, and it's a complete charmerfor anyone who looks at their old Altered Images records with fondness. SKU: 1074200

Voices In The Sky
If you're a fan of the Moodies' trademark brand of lush, romantic orchestral pop/rock, you can't fault the songs here; most of them (early tracks like "Nights in White Satin," and "Ride My See-Saw" and more recent hits like "Gemini Dream" and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker") are classic radio staples and likely to remain so. However, with only 10 tracks to cover the band's fruitful four-decade career, VOICES necessarily leaves a lot out; Moodies junkies might well prefer THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES (17 tracks) or the two-disc THE MOODYBLUES ANTHOLOGY (31 tracks). C'mon
Town And County: Ben Vida (acoustic guitar, cornet); Liz Payne (acoustic guitar, marimba, bass, percussion); Jim Dorling (bass clarinet, harmonium, celeste); Josh Abrams (celeste, bass). Recorded at Engine Music Studios, Chicago, Illinois. In the cool and crowded world that scribes insist upon referring to as "post-rock," the tropes are so well established that, as in electronica, it's often difficult for an artist to make a truly individual impact. Not so with the drummerless, all-acoustic quartet Town and Country. In quiet, chamber-like settings, the band's instrumental compositions (and they ARE compositions, not just doodles over a two-chord progression) carefully intertwine the worlds of folk, classical music, and the avant garde. The cascading repetitions of an acoustic guitar pattern on "I'm Appealing" wouldn't sound out of place in a Steve Reich or Philip Glass composition, while at other moments, the cornet and bassclarinet interjections echo lost Morton Feldman pieces. At the same time, there's a rooted, earthy quality to much of C'MON, suggesting that fans of John Fahey might find a place for themselves here. Despite all the aforementioned touchstones, it's important to remember that Town and Country's sound and vision are very much their own, and all the more inviting for it. SKU: 1070146

Italian Platinum
Silkworm: Tim Midgett (vocals, guitar, bass); Andy Cohen (vocals, guitar); Eulvatina Rats (vocals, drums); Biznono Kadane (piano, clavinet, organ). Additional personnel: Kelly Hogan (vocals). Recorded at Electrical Audio, Chicago, Illinois. Silkworm is not one of those indie rock bands one can easily pigeonhole, or for that matter forget. Like Pavement, they present lyrics running the gamut from the absurdly prescient to the simply absurd, sung in a lilting, off-key style (although Andy Cohen's vocals eminate from a darker and grittier world than the higher-pitched Mr. Malkmus). Dissonant guitars crescendo into melodies before breaking into chaos. However, Silkworm has always presented a more varied sound than their higher-profile brethren and generally seems a bit less studied. Seventh offerring ITALIAN PLATINUM finds the Seattle-based threesome sounding as vigorous and gin-soaked as ever. From the catchy opening track's refrain "I love you means I hope you don't survive the night" to the final track's bon mot "tobacco's a help because it clears the mind/but like all your friends, it's vilified," obtuse and oblique lyrics abound, occasionally confound, but certainly never bore. There's even a somewhat divine moment when singer/songwriter Kelly Hogan guests onthe affecting blues-country ballad "Young." ITALIAN PLATINUM stands as one of the more diverse and enjoyable installments in indie stalwarts Silkworm's distinctive discography. SKU: 1072399
