Don't believe the hype. Critics (and Costello himself) generally regard this as Elvis' worst album, but that's far from true. For one thing, it's hard to dispute the overblown MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE's claim to said title. For another, there are too many damngood songs to permit GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD to be overlooked. There may be a lack of focus in the production and arrangements, but any album that opens with the pop-soul artistry of "The Only Flame in Town" and closes with the stirring anthem "Peace In Our Time" has plenty going for it. In between, there's media satire ("Worthless Thing"), classic Costello neurosis ("Inch by Inch") and effective R&B reverence ("I Wanna Be Loved"). Not a good starting point for neophytes, but recommended to true EC fans.

Subtitled UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1, this was the first of a series of recordings that were released near the beginning of the couple's relationship. Yoko Ono, a member of the Fluxus art movement, was a respected artist and had been producing pieces in non-traditional media (sound, video, conceptual) throughout the '60s--in fact she met Lennon when he came to one of her gallery exhibitions. With The Beatles in often-fractious circumstances at that time, John Lennon poured his energies into collaborations with Yoko Ono.
The two long pieces which comprise the bulk of this CD were originally a side each of a vinyl record (the bonus track, a lovely song called "Remember Love," was the B-side to their "GivePeace A Chance" single). They're both sound collages which incorporate found sounds, bits of other recordings, some keyboards and other instruments, as well as Lennon and Ono variously talking and vocalizing. This was the public's first glimpse of Yoko's particular style of singing which included whoops, warbles and shrieks. The verbal exchanges between the couple is often quite charming and occasionally even funny.

Director Alan Parker's 1984 film BIRDY, from a psychological novel about a disturbed Vietnam vet who thinks he can fly, offered Peter Gabriel his first opportunity to score a feature film. He responded bytaking selected instrumental tracks from some of his earlier recordings and toying with them at the mixing board (in a manner somewhat reminiscent of Brian Eno) until they became all-new pieces (frankly, if you can pick out the originals, you're good). What resulted was highly atmospheric and quite appropriate in the context of the film, although heard at home BIRDY seems more of an ambient album than a film score per se.

Quoted, recommended, and worshipped by the critics for decades, this underground masterpiece has now become part of the establishment. It cries to be listened to without interruption, which may explain why it failed to reach either the UK or US charts. It wanders and weaves, repeating themes and lyrics as if one song, yet we never tire of "gardens wet with rain," "champagne eyes," or the wonder of how Morrison can make a place like Ladbroke Grove seem so hauntingly evocative. HEYDAY is a set of 1968 BBC radio performances by Fairport Convention. The tracks were recorded after Sandy Denny had joined, but prior to the band's tragic road accident that claimed the life of drummer Martin Lamble and shook the spirit of the band. These dozen songs show the band's fascination with American music and songwriters (a fact that was also quite evident on their self-titled debut).
With two formidable front-line singers, Denny and Ian Matthews, the band's versions of songs by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Gene Clark, Johnny Cash, the Everly Brothers and others are given strong and believable treatments. An early original by Richard Thompson shows him to still be under the spell of his record collection, but his guitarplaying is already uniquely his own, a remarkable accomplishment for one not yet twenty years old. These songs are rich with the joy of a band glad to be playing together and in love with their material.

TIMELESS: HANK WILLIAMS TRIBUTE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. The first question that comes to mind upon the release of a Hank Williams tribute album featuring such alt-country superstars as Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams, not to mention American icons like Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, is "what took so long?" Clearly, the artists featured on the TIMELESS tribute have all been strongly influenced by the great bard of country music, so their participation in such a project seems like a given. Some artists stick closer to Hank's original arrangements than others; Sheryl Crow's take on "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" and Hank's grandson Hank III's "I'm A Long Gone Daddy" hew pretty closely to the traditional path. Predictably, Beck takes things the furthest by adding some sonic murk to "Your Cheatin' Heart." Keith Richards reaches deep into "You Win Again" and pulls out some Memphis soul. But regardless of their faithfulness to the original versions, these artists clearlyhave something to add to the Hank Williams legacy, underling the fact that the man's songs are truly TIMELESS.

No, Mr. Zappa has not put on the powdered wig and white stockings. Instead he has dug up the music of another composer that shares his moniker. This is the music of Italian composer Francesco Zappa, who lived in Europe in the 1700s. The 20th century Zappa (Frank) saw fit to modernize the music ofhis namesake on his own personal electronic orchestra, The Barking Pumpkin Digital Gratification Consort. What this amounts to is something like Bach on synthesizers conducted (sort of) by the mad scientist of modern music--it's all very sweet and innocent but somehow you get the feeling there is something lurking under the surface with a smirking grin on his mustached face. For the Zappa fanatic, this is an unusual addition that must not be missed. For the classical fan, this is your only chance to experience this obscure baroque composer courtesy of the 20th century's most dramatic one.

SLAAPKAMMERS MIT SLAGRAAM--a Dutch title that literally translates to "Bedrooms with Whipped Cream"--harkens back to the band's experimental days. On three tracks spread over 28 minutes, Sonic Youth work out extended, hypnoticthemes for non-existent psychological case studies.
The title track, the longest of the three "songs" included here, opens with a swirl of sound before eventually settling into a 17 minute cavalcade of guitar effects overlaying a particularly "in-your-face" drum sound. The results are simultaneously ambient, aggressive and quite affecting. "Stil" is another seven minutes of guitar effects and percussion suggesting, at times, the sound of wind chimes caught in the vapor trail of guitars feedback. "Herinneringen" ("Memory" in Dutch) is, at three and a half minutes, both the shortest and least successful track. The music here is very subdued, and is buried beneath an apparently ad-libbed vocal performance by Kim Gordon. That cut notwithstanding, the first two tracks alone would been worth the price of admission.

This is certainly true of Charlie Chaplin, and is no less true of Jimmy Durante, a man whose face, voice, and demeanor were at once comic and tragic. The Long Ryders' 1984 full-length debut is one of the defining albums of the mid-'80s roots-rock scene, a loose amalgamation of bands reacting against the MTV-ready crop of synth-pop superstars by playing guitar-heavy country-influenced rock and roll. Heavily influenced by Gram Parsons and the Buffalo Springfield, singer/songwriter Sid Griffin and crew mix the '60s revivalism of the then-current Paisley Underground scene with a fondness for mandolins and other bluegrass instruments which would be further exploredby the alt-country groups of the '90s. Unfortunately, the Long Ryders, who had made much of their "authenticity" in early interviews, blew their street cred in 1985 by starring in a beer commercial, to widespread derision. NATIVE SONS proves that the band deserved a much better fate than that.
This reissue also includes the 1983 EP 10-5-60 and a previously unreleased cover of the theme from the '60s drive-in film THE TRIP.

FAREWELL, ANGELINA is a typical early Joan Baez album, though it does contain some material by contemporary writers. The track listing includes a Donovan song and four numbers penned by Baez's ex-boyfriend, Bob Dylan. Although Baez's blues-based material ("Daddy you Been on my Mind") falls a little short, her achingly pure soprano works wonderfully on more traditionalsongs like "Wild Mountain Thyme" or "Satisfied Mind." The highpoint is a very nice version of "Where Have all the Flowers Gone," rendered in German.

MADE IN USA compiles tracks from several Pizzicato Five records released only in Japan.

For its first full-length U.S. release, dance-pop duo Pizzicato Five had a wealth of options, having released over a dozen albums in their native Japan over the previous seven years, not even counting remix EPs and compilations. However, nearly half of MADE IN USA comes from the Japanese BOSSA NOVA 2001 album, with the rest of the 11 songs taken from a handful of earlier releases. Some of the tracks are re-recordings in English, particularly theodd lengthy interview of singer Maki Nomiya called "This Year's Girl #2," while others feature Pizzicato Five's usual Japanese-English hybrid. The album's highlights are the slinky, Barry White-influenced "Magic Carpet Ride," the hyperkinetic "Twiggy Twiggy/Twiggy Vs. James Bond" and the sultry thump of "Go-Go Dancer," but taken as a whole, MADE IN USA is a perfect introduction to the slyly ironic electro-dance world of Pizzicato Five.
