Gold Dust (Live At The Royalty)
GOLD DUST was recorded at Sandy Denny's final live performance in November of 1977. It contains re-recordingsof some of the original guitar and backing vocal tracks due to the poor sound quality of the original tracks. Recorded live at The Royalty Theater, London, England on November 27, 1977. Includes liner notes by Pamela Murray Winters. In 1977, Sandy Denny returned to the concert stage after a two-year absence to embark on an 11-city British tour with a six-piece band. Their London concert, which resulted in this recording, was the last date. The show was also Denny's last performance--she died less than five months later. Unreleased for 21 years, the concert tapes required guitar and background vocal repairs to remove some sonic disturbances. With a steel guitarist among the band members, there's a gorgeous sweep to the arrangements on GOLD DUST. And Denny's voice, fragile at some moments and powerful at others, is simply an awe-inspiring instrument. All of the songs were written by Denny with the exception of a song by Richard Thompson and a song by Bob Dylan. Drawing from British and American folk, pop, and more, GOLD DUST has a regal and spiritual quality that makes it timeless. SKU: 1000830

Pixies At The BBC
PIXIES AT THE BBC is a collection of 15 previously unavailable performances that were taped for John Peel and Mark Goodier's radio programs between May 3, 1988 & June 23, 1991. The Pixies: Black Francis (vocals, guitar); Kim Deal (vocals, bass); Joey Santiago (guitar); David Lovering (drums). Producers: Mike Robinson, Dale Griffin, Miti. Engineers include: James Birtwistle, Mike Walter, Paul Roberts. The Pixies' wild, off-kilter sound provided a breath of fresh air in the autumn years of theclean-cut eighties. While they were at it, they also happened to change the face of modern music, infecting Boston's ever-livening rock scene with a sense of intelligence and experimentation. Investing an astounding amount of energy into their studio recordings, the Pixies also packed an amazing wallop live, a fact which is documented on PIXIES AT THE BBC, which culls some of their finest moments recorded under the quasi-live conditions of the BBC recording studios in London. In addition to the adrenaline-fueled versions of such classics as "There Goes My Gun" (shortened even further from the album version by a breakneck tempo) and a haunting "Wave Of Mutilation," PIXIES AT THE BBC throws in some other treats: opening with a chaotic rendition of the Beatles' "Wild Honey Pie," the album serves as a sort of historical document spanning four years of musical growth from one of rock's most important voices. Beyond Good And Evil
The Cult: Ian Astbury (vocals); Billy Duffy (guitar); MattSorum (drums). Additional personnel: Martin LeNoble, Chris Wyse (bass). Recorded at Plantation Recording, Maui, Hawaii and Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California. Although the '90s proved to be a dour decade that found The Cult battling dwindling record sales and each other before calling it quits in 1995, these goth-inspired hard rockers managed to reunite and release BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL in 2001. In re-teaming with veteran producer Bob Rock, The Cult cobbled together a batch of songs overflowing with Billy Duffy's fat Led Zeppelin-flavored riffs, Matt Sorum's thunderous drumming, and lyrics influenced by frontman Ian Astbury's spiritual trek to Tibet. While the anthemic "True Believers" directly refers to said quest, other topics include contemporary society's slide into self-absorption ("Take The Power," "War [The Process]"), a walk on the metaphysical side ("Ashes And Ghosts"), and appropriately enough, rebirth ("The Saint"). Despite the weighty topics, The Cult keeps the decibels cranked as Duffy pours molten waves of distortion into guitar-fueled rants like "Rise" and "American Gothic." Periodically, flashes of the band's old sound pop up. Among the most notable are the hard-charging groove of "My Bridges Burn" (reminiscent of "Fire Woman") and the touching "Nico," a tribute to the early Velvets singer that brings to mind "Edie (Ciao Baby)." BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL is a great start towards a much better decade for these English rockers. SKU: 1060818

How Dare You
This was prepared from the original mastertapes. 10cc's fourth album, HOW DARE YOU, is the last to feature the original lineup of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Lol Creme and Kevin Godley. Godley and Creme left shortly after the recording of this album to explore the commercial and artistic possibilities of an instrument they invented, the Gizmo. The Gizmo's eerie drone is all over this record, slotting in beautifully with the multilayered vocal arrangements which were the band's other sonic trademark. The songs included here are more serious than those on the band's earlier records, although "I'm Mandy, Fly Me," "I Wanna Rule the World," and the sarcastic anthem "Art For Art's Sake" are as smart-alecky as previous hits like "Rubber Bullets" and "I'm Not In Love." The combination of art-rock exploration and the sort of pop smarts the group excelled at makes HOW DARE YOU an immensely satisfying album. SKU: 1006339

Los Angeles (Expanded & Remastered)
Available with WILD GIFT on 1 CD. X: John Doe (vocals, bass); Exene Cervenka (vocals); Billy Zoom (guitar); D.J. Bonebrake (drums). Additional personnel includes: Ray Manzarek (organ, synthesizer). Recorded at Golden Sound Studios, Hollywood, California in January 1980. Originally released on Slash (104). Includes liner notes by Kristine McKenna. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Since its release in 1980, X's debut album LOS ANGELES has rightfully gone on to be widely heralded as one of punk rock's true classics. Produced by former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, the album announced to the rest of the world the arrival of the West Coast punk explosion (which included such other acts as Black Flag, the Germs, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Fear, etc.). But X was more than just your average, ordinary punk band, as they weren't afraid to inject rockabilly riffs and poetic lyrics into the punk rock stew, as exemplified throughout LOS ANGELES. The album spawned some of the quartet's best-known tracks, including "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline," "Nausea," "Los Angeles," and "The Unheard Music," while the 2001 Rhino Records reissue tacked on five extra bonus tracks. Of the newly included tracks, standouts include the forgotten early demo "Delta 88," as well as an early take of "Adult Books," which would be reworked on their sophomore release, WILD GIFT. Vulgar Display Of Power
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Recorded at Pantego Sound Studio, Pantego, Texas. With a rougher image and a more focused, aggressive sound than in their hairspray and spandex days on an independent label, Texas natives Pantera made a serious dent in the heavy music scene with the major label release of COWBOYS FROM HELL, which inspired radio play and MTV support. While Metallica and Megadeth were watering down their approach for a more mainstream sound, Pantera got harder with VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER. From the momentvocalist Phil Anselmo screams his first "Revenge!" in "Mouth for War," the stage is set. Drummer Vinnie Paul showcases relentless technical prowess thrashing out complex double-bass drum patterns in "A New Level" and "By Demons be Driven," while guitarist Diamond Darrell's seemingly endless supply of hard-grooving, blues-inspired hooks are the heart of "No Good" and "Live in a Hole." In the emotional power-ballad "Hollow," the song's protagonist faces the heartache of having a friend trapped in a coma; and just as in the epic "Cemetery Gates" from COWBOYS FROM HELL, Anselmo continues to struggle with the consequences of fate and the will of the world. Elegiac Cycle
Solo performer: Brad Mehldau (piano). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California on February 1 & 2, 1999. Includes liner notes by Brad Mehldau. An avid student of classical music and a fan of pop, Brad Mehldaualways seemed like something more than a jazzman, even though most of his '90s recordings found him prospering in the piano trio format. By the end of the decade, he was ready to break from his past and explore new directions via his first solo piano album. Like DEATH & THE FLOWER by Keith Jarrett (a touchstone by virtue of his non-bluesy, impressionistic approach to jazz), ELEGIAC CYCLE is at least ostensibly a "concept album" about the way communing with mortality brings one a greater appreciation of life. Freed even from the minor restrictions of post-bop, Mehldau lets his fingers run free, indulging the classical side of his muse more fully than ever before. In these often somber but always inviting pieces, his quiet dynamism melds the modernism of Jarrett with the concise archness of Satie and the guarded romanticism of Debussy. ELEGIAC CYCLE goes beyond categories like jazz or classical; it's simply an album of intense, emotional compositions by a gifted young artist. SKU: 1017850

Raising Hell [Remastered]
Run-DMC: Joseph "Run" Simmons, Daryll "DMC" McDaniels (rap vocals); "Jam Master" Jay Mizell (keyboards, percussion, scratches). Additional personnel: Steven Tyler (vocals); Joe Perry, Rick Rubin (guitar); Daniel Shulman (bass); Sam Sever (drum programming). Engineers include: Steve Ett, Andy Wallace, Jay Burnett. Rap music may have been making some headway in terms of mainstream acceptance by 1986, but it was the release and breakthrough of Run DMC's cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" that cemented the deal. Rap was out of the urban ghetto and into the white, hard rock suburbs. And Run DMC was the perfect band to initialize the natural crossover, being among the first of hip-hop's nationally respected acts, and definitely the first to hint at the marriage of hardcore rap and power chords with 1983s "Rock Box" and 1985s "King of Rock." RAISING HELL, the band's third full-length release, includes far more classics than just that one pop hit. "Peter Piper," "It's Tricky," "My Adidas" and "You Be Illin'" define the old-school hip-hop aesthetic about as well as any four songs on any rap full-length recorded in the '80s. Listen to any song on this LP and you'll recognize two tothree lines that have become standards in the language of rap. A historic album? You don't know the half of it. SKU: 1087166

Tattoo The Earth [PA]
THE FIRST CRUSADE is state-of-the-art contemporary heavy metal by masters of the genre, recorded after the turn of the millennium (fittingly, in Pontiac, Michigan, where they've long appreciated such things), at a travelling festival that celebrated body piercing as well as music. The bands here mostly play brutal thrash metal, occasionally leavened with elements of hip-hop and shock-rock. The shock-your-parents lyrics usually wallow in death, carnage, Satanism, and torture, and the vocals mostly approximate the requisite Cookie Monster guttural howls appropriate to the genre. In other words, THE FIRST CRUSADE is fun for the whole family, and, on a strictly musical level, impressively adroit. If there's one band and song that typifies the generalattitude of the show it's got to be Hatebreed and "I Will Be Heard!," a late-adolescent manifesto that is, on the evidence here, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury
Full performer name: Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy. Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy:Michael Franti (vocals); Rono Tse (percussion, sounds). Additional personnel: Charlie Hunter (vocals, guitar, bass); Simone White (drums). Recorded at Razor's Edge, Komotion, and Pete Scaturro's Studio, San Francisco, California. Often berated as the group that it is OK for non-rap fans to like, the Disposable Heroes' solitary album proper represents much more than that might imply. Shades of Michael Franti and Rono Tse's previous incarnation, as part of the Beatnigs, resurface in the collision of samples, noise and breakbeats. Tse's technique is exemplary. However, it is Franti's fiercely intelligent narratives that carry the day. Where bombast and finger-pointing had been the order of the day in hip-hop, Franti includes his own inadequacies (notably calling himself a 'jerk' in 'Music And Politics') in his diagnosis of the problem. LOVE AND THEFT won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Bob Dylan's career has always been about defying expectations. Accordingly he followed 1997's much-heralded TIME OUT OF MIND with a marked about-face. Where its predecessor was a bleak emotional landscape full of languid atmospheres, existential sentiments, and graveyard vocal delivery, LOVE AND THEFT finds Dylan much more energized and hopeful. Instead of swamp-like textures, we get sharp, cracking bar-band blues, and lissome ballads with a '20s/'30s feel. The old codger has never sounded more spry; after observing that "summer days and summer nights are gone," he follows up with "I know a place where there's still something going on." Elsewhere he's variously hunting bear, standing on a table to make a toast, burning down a house, and starting a new empire. The musical context for all this uproar is informed more heavily by Dylan's earliest Americana roots than anything other than his albums of traditional folk songs. Delta and Chicago blues are templates for many songs, while a few others even more anachronistically suggest a future for Dylan as ghost writer for Leon Redbone. The lyrics themselves are littered with quotes from/references to old blues tunes, but Dylan's classic non-linear structure and wild imagination allow him to transcend his influences even as he assimilates them. War Report, The [PA]
Personnel: Capone, Noreaga, Tragedy (aka "Khadafi"); Iman T.H.U.G., Mobb Deep (vocals); Havoc (vocals, drum programming); Brian Attmore (keyboards); Shawn Brown, Nneka (background vocals); Castro, Musolini, Mendosa, Troy Outlaw. Producers include: Charlemagne, EZ Elpee, Nashiem Myrick, Carlos Broady, G-Money. Engineers include: Pacman, Ken "Duro" Ifill, G Money. Just as the underground punk and new wave sound of the '70s ultimately found it's way to the top of the charts in a modified form, so the underground hip-hop scene has been translated into the mainstream. Still, the hard-core sound and complex lyrics ofgroups like Capone-N-Noreaga place them squarely in the underground, despite their voluminous record sales. On their debut, THE WAR REPORT, they are as hard-core as hard-core gets. A spin-off of fellow Queens-MCs Mobb Deep, Capone-N-Noreaga bring their songs to life through their lyrical wizardry. For their beats, only the best will do; Clark Kent and Buckwild handle the boards for some of the tracks. The duo even employ the hard-hitting production skills of Nashiem Myrick and Carlos Broady on "T.O.N.Y. (Top Of New York)." Getting the news from CNN takes on a whole new meaning as THE WAR REPORT describes the dirt going down on the streets of New York. SKU: 1084584

Desolation Angels
Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, piano, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen. DESOLATION ANGELS is arguably the band's best album since its bedrock laden debut. Coming in at the tail end of the '70s, Bad Company finally began to incorporate other elements to its no frills rock approach, making DESOLATION ANGELS the band's most diverse recording. The straight-ahead drive of "Rock 'n'Roll Fantasy" subtly employs electronic drums that merely accent rather than takeover. The acoustic based "Crazy Circles" reveals that even without pounding rock behind him, Paul Rodgers is a singer nearly without peer. The western flavored "Evil Wind" brings Rodgers love of outlaw imagery to the fray and the band soon departs to the fully countryfied "Oh Atlanta," and gives Little Feat a run for its money. The presence of the album on FM radios across the country at the end of the decade confirmed what Bad Company laid bare five years prior--in an era where overblown art rock was revered, there was still a thirst for rock in its purest form. Senior, The
Personnel: Ginuwine (vocals); Jose Cenquentez, Snoop Dogg, The Rock, Baby, Sole, Method Man, R. Kelly, Baby, Clipse (vocals); Aaron Fishbein (guitar); Harvey Hester (background vocals). Producers include: Troy Oliver, Jerry "Juke" Vines, CASINO Joe, Troy Taylor, Scott Storch. Recorded at The Hit Factory Criteria, Miami, Florida; Noontime Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Ever since he first captured the music-buyingpublic's attention, Ginuwine has been the personification of lady-killing hip-hop cool. A kind of smooth R&B-crooning gangsta Billy Dee Williams, the singer (originally with the aid of producer Timbaland) developed a unique combination of dynamic East Coast beats, G-funk-influenced keyboards, and highly rhythmic modern soul belting. Though his uniquely urban style found him somewhat at odds artistically with the more down-home approach of retro soul artists such as Macy Gray and Maxwell, THE SENIOR finds Ginuwine continuing to push the envelope. Oddly, enough, however, this disc is also one of his most overtly commercial-sounding albums, at once filled with hit-you-over-the-head hooks and over-the-top lyrics worthy of Barry White himself. Highlights include "In Those Jeans," which is as blatant and direct a sexual come-on as has ever been recorded, and "Chedda Brings," a surprisingly thoughtful examination of the problems that accompany newfound financial independence. Welcome To The Afterfuture
Personnel includes: Mike Ladd (synthesizer, bass, programming); Jeff Cordero (guitar); Charles Calello (keyboards); Eric M.O. (bass); Bruce Grant (tape loops); Fred Ones (cuts); Company Flow, Starship Nigga. Recorded at Ozone Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Mike Ladd. Mike Ladd, like the incendiary proto-rap group Last Poets, spews politically charged lyrics, set to jazzy beats and live instrumentation. With a hint of space-age, "out there" samples, he pushes the boundaries of hip-hop. What's been called experimental hip-hop has been inspired by poetry slams, free jazz, funk, and even '70s and '80s electronic music. Firstdabbled by early-'90s hip-hop prodigies A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets and De La Soul, the practice of mixing chunky beats with acoustic and electronic music started a revolution of new expression. Now upheld by the likes of Ladd, Antipop Consortium, and Saul Williams, the Afro-futuristic message is being heard. On WELCOME TO THE AFTERFUTURE, Ladd's fifth release, electro, ambient, and loungey beats and samples project his smooth flow for a cohesive overview of some disparate influences. Heavy with science fiction references and political undertones (e.g. "Bladerunners," featuring Company Flow) the album twists your ears and mind to a whole other level. At times completely digital, at others acoustically jazzy, the album takes its place in a time capsule that kids will be digging out of the crates in decades to come. SKU: 1031727

Slow Train Coming [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Mark Knopfler (guitar); Muscle Shoals Horns (horns); BarryBeckett (keyboards, percussion); Tim Drummond (bass); Pick Withers (drums); Mickey Buckins (percussion); Carolyn Dennis, Helena Springs, Regina Havis (background vocals). Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Of all the pitstops made by the nomadically creative Dylan, none was more unusual than his brief conversion to Christianity in the late '70s. SLOW TRAIN COMING was the first of two records (SAVED being the other) that found Zimmerman exploring his newfound faith. Recorded at Memphis' famed Muscle Shoals Studios and produced by soul vets Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett, SLOW TRAIN's supporting cast includes Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler on guitar and Pick Withers on drums, along with a handful of studio musicians. Knopfler's crisp guitar playing is surrounded by a punchy horn section and a phalanx of female background singers who are a perfect compliment to Dylan's revitalized vocals. Songs such as "When He Returns" and "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking" reverberate with the conviction of Dylan's new faith whereas "When You Gonna Wake Up" simultaneously celebrates America's greatness as a country and warns of the need to seek a new set of values. Dylan eventually won a Best Rock Vocal Grammy for "Gotta Serve Somebody," but the enigmatic one renounced his conversion to Christianity by 1983. SKU: 1086952

Marionette And The Music Box, The
Cult Chicago instrumentalpost-rock band's second album follows 2001's 'The Faithful Anchor'.
