Big, expansive Euro-pop, Australian style. Stylistically, this duo is coming straight out of the '80s with a vengeance. Savage Garden look to Duran Duran and Big Country for influences. Guitars are used for texture, not as instruments of angst or anger. But the Prince-style strings and piano at the end of "To the Moon and Back" show a willingness to experiment within the somewhat narrow confines of their chosen sound.
The feel is electronic, but not inhuman. "I Want You" sounds a lot like Roxette (remember Roxette?!!), with its rapid-fire, hip-hoppy vocal affectations, but then "Truly Madly Deeply" comes along, a ballad replete with open-chord guitar sweeps and gospel-inflected keyboards. There's even a nice classical guitar solo at at the end to round things out. If you like modern dance music, but with a semblance of melody andsome pleasant instrumental concepts, you just might want to enter this conventionally pretty, not-so-savage garden.

True to his mischievous, somewhat outrageous rep, Redman made sure that DOC'S THE NAME was a non-stop party throughout. With BLACK AND BLUE the Rolling Stones geared up for another installment of records as the world's best-loved rock and roll band. Aided by Ronnie Wood's enrollment as foil to Keith's unmistakable guitar, BLACK AND BLUE assured, to those who dared doubt, a new era had begun.
Flavoring their existing rhythm-and-blues format with Caribbean beats and cocktail-swilling pianos, BLACK AND BLUE's strongest moments are in the band's obvious enjoyment. Catering to Mick's lounge-act instincts, "Melody" seems the obvious precursor to "Miss You," allowing BillyPreston's piano and vocal harmony to carry the Stones with a more stylized, less formulaic batch of songs.

In SOMEDAY AT CHRISTMAS, Stevie Wonder applies his inimitable vocal technique to yuletide songs, some familiar, some not, with predictably successful results. In the title song he yearns for a Christmas when "Men won't be boys/playing with bombs like kids play with toys," striking a plaintive tone not usually found on Christmas albums. Although he is hopeful that the day will come, he sings that it may not happen any time soon. The song seems eerily prescient in light of the chaotic year that would follow, Christmas 1967, when this record was released.
Other high points include his joyous reading of "Little Drummer Boy," with its steadily building martial beat, and chestnuts like "Silver Bells" and "The Christmas Song," which Stevie delivers with total assurance, as well as a palpable sense of fun. He even brings a measure of soul to more sentimental numbers like "One Little Christmas Tree" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me." The album ends on an upnote in "What Christmas Means to Me," which invokes the bumping bass line of the Capitol's Cool Jerk and features a happy harp solo from Stevie.

When it became known that Vivian Campbell had left Whitesnake and been replaced by six-string master Steve Vai in 1989, the rock world and guitar fans everywhere waited with bated breath for the new line-up's first album together. Vai was supposed to join forces with Whitesnake's other guitarist, Adrian Vandenberg, but a freak injury to Vandenberg's hands prior to the sessions meant that Vai handled all the guitar duties himself.
While the album wasn't on par with such past releases as 1984's SLIDE IT IN and 1987's smash self-titled release, SLIP OF THE TONGUE was another hit--the band, and especially singer David Coverdale, was once again in fine Zeppelin-esque form. A re-recording of an earlier UK hit, "Fool For Your Loving," was an MTV favorite, while such raunchy rockers as the album-opening title track, "Cheap An' Nasty," and "Kittens Got Claws" fitted in well withthe then-thriving party/glam metal climate. Once the world tour for SLIP OF THE TONGUE wrapped up, Coverdale would quietly retire Whitesnake.

The real gems here are, naturally, the previously unreleased songs. Some, like "Isis" and the surrealistic epic "Visions of Johanna are Dylan album cuts heard here in revelatory live versions. Though Bill Frisell has been labeled as a jazz composer and guitarist, the breadth of experience that he brings to both disciplines is met only by his ability to make consistently arresting full-album listening experiences. Produced by the similarly inclined Wayne Horvitz, who also plays keyboards, IS THAT YOU? is full of surprises. In "Someone In My Backyard," a banjo shows up amidst the screaming guitars and Joey Baron's pummeling drums. That piece ends, and a stately piece with the regal bearing of a courtesan's minuet begins. Both the individual numbers and the relationship of the pieces to one another offer a sensibility as far removed from monotony as anything can get. This is a universe without boredom, well stocked with grace, beauty, wild abandon, lunacy and everything in between, each in turn--and sometimes simultaneously.

In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. Rob Halford's vocal histrionics and the dual guitar attack of K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton mesmerized metal-heads everywhere. While Priest had been together since the early-'70s, the band's big U.S. breakthrough came with 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE.
Like most other metal bands that broke through in the early '80s (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, etc.), Judas Priest took advantage of the then-developing video medium.MTV put the clip for "You Got Another Thing Coming" in heavy rotation, and the song became one of heavy metal's all-time classic anthems. Other album tracks, such as "The Hellion," "Electric Eye," "(Take These) Chains," "Devil's Child," and the title composition, were all prime metal cuts.
