Bright Flight
Silver Jews: David Berman (vocals, guitar); William Tyler (pedal steel guitar); Tony Crow (electric guitar); Phil Niehaus (piano); Tim Barnes (percussion). Recorded at HVM Oepot, Berry Hill, Tennesse. When the Silver Jews first appeared in the mid-'90s, the band's singer-songwriter David Berman was backed by some of his pals from Pavement, whose sound helped define the sonic parameters of the first couple of Silver Jews releases. In short order, though, the group weaned itself of Pavement connections both aural and physical, and developed its own sound, which seems to reach an apex on BRIGHT FLIGHT. While Berman and company have been moving in a vaguely country-rock direction for a while, this album probably the contains the largest quotient of country influence, as heard most plainly on the classicNashville-mode male/female duet "Tennessee" and the disfigured honky-tonk of "Friday Night Fever." While he's keeping busy turning his band into the New Riders of the Purple Sage, though, real-life poet Berman's lyrics are sharper than ever, encompassing everything from death and time to alcohol and an admiration for Royal Trux. You're A Woman I'm A Machine [ECD]
This is the debut album from Canadian duo Death From Above 1979 and sees Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler playing their own brand of indie rock with just bass, drums, and the occasional Moog squelch. Their trashy, overdrivensound, with pounding, almost dance style beats have been likened to The Rapture, Rocket From The Crypt, and Blood Brothers. SKU: 6583991

God Hates Us All [PA]
Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass);Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman (guitar); Paul Bostaph (drums). Recorded at The Warehouse Studios, Vancouver, Canada. "Disciple" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Don't blink. Otherwise, Slayer's eighth studio release will scoot right by at hyper-speed. In fact, morbid images and jackhammer guitar riffs are the only traces that GOD HATES US ALL leaves behind on its demolition path. Heavy, indeed. If lead screamer Tom Araya slows down just for a second, dark mantras such as "I won't be force-fed prophecy" and "My hate is contagious" become frighteningly intelligible. Slayer might not be pretty, but no one can accuse the band of campiness--this is as real (and scary) as it gets. GOD HATES US ALL is another searing slab of classic Slayer. Highlights include "Disciple" and "Threshold," which capture the group at its bombastic best. Stylistically, the album has all of the characteristics of great thrash metal--grinding guitars, crisp bass drums, and convincing shout-speak vocals. GOD HATES US ALL is not for everyone, however. It will offend many, which is the very reason that the band's fans will embrace it all the more. SKU: 1063234

Quartet
In the early-'80s, the new wave movement was disintegrating into a million fragments, as those who embraced guitars and those who embraced synthesizers drew lines in the sand and began to vehemently territorialize. An adjunct arm of the synth-pop scene (see Gary Numan, OMD,The Human League) grew from out of the new wave, and, armed to the teeth with the Germanic sequencers of the '70s and state-of-the-art synthesizers, these groups became part of what was known as the New Romantics. Some grew large (Duran Duran, ABC), others receded into the cut-out bins--Ultravox grabbed the brass ring for a short while, courtesy of their brilliant VIENNA album. QUARTET followed two releases later, produced by former Beatles director George Martin, featuring a fairly stripped-down, but still illustrious Ultravox. The opening "Reap the Wild Wind," with its gigantic drumbeats, soaring strings, and windswept synths remains a high point for the band, and remains the album's finest moment. Ultravox were in something of a disarray at the time of QUARTET's release, but their glorious sound--the sort of stuff the Romans might have danced to had they installed sub-woofers in the Coliseum--remained fresh and invigorating. Up [SACD]
UP! includes 2 CDs: a "red" disc featuring a pop-electric mix plus a second "green" disc featuring a country-acoustic mix of the same tracks. Personnel includes: Shania Twain (vocals); Jon Willis (acoustic guitar, banjo, bouzouki, mandolin); Heitor Perreira (acoustic, electric & Spanish guitar, mandolin); Michael Thompson (electric guitar, slideguitar, bouzouki); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Cory Churko (slide guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel); Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin, violin, cello); Irish Film Orchestra, The Leahy's (strings); Simon & Diamond Duggal (percussion). Includes liner notes by Shania Twain. UP! marks Shania Twain's emergence from a five-year hiatus that found her absconding to Switzerland and having a child with husband/producer/collaborator Robert "Mutt" Lange. As ever, Twain continues to be the master of the pop crossover. This time around, she takes 19 songs presents two different versions of each, divided between a pair of discs. CD 1 (the "Red CD") features more rock-flavored versions as opposed to CD2 (the "Green CD"), which includes considerably more pedal steel guitar et al. Regardless of the genre, Twain and Lange continue to make a formidable pop-writing team. The two manage to craft catchy cuts on topics ranging from mundane situations in a relationship like who's behind the wheel (the sassy "In My Car [I'll Be The Driver]") to weightier fare like rampant materialism (a mechanized "Ka-Ching!") and female empowerment (the soaring "She's Not Just A Pretty Face"). Otherwise, Twain tills the fertile nuances of romance via convincing balladry that touches on dalliances with the green-eyed devil (a heartfelt "I'm Jealous") and rock-solid pledges of fidelity (an ethereal "Forever And For Always") guaranteed to be 2003's quintessential wedding song. Cream Of Eric Clapton, The
THE CREAM OF CLAPTON includes songs released between 1966 and 1981 by Cream, Blind Faith, Derek And The Dominos and Eric Clapton as a solo performer. Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar). Producers include: Robert Stigwood, Felix Pappalardi, Jimmy Miller, Delaney Bramlett, Tom Dowd. Compilation producers: Chris Griffin, Bill Levenson, George McManus. Includes liner notes by Ray Coleman. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio. If you only have the funds or shelf space to own one Eric Clapton album, THE CREAM OF ERIC CLAPTON is the one to get. Featuring 19 songs that span from Cream's 1966 hit "I Feel Free" to Clapton's 1981 single, "I Can't Stand It," this amplecollection of career highlights from the legendary English guitarist is essential classic rock. The album opens with five tracks by Cream, the psychedelic-blues power trio that Clapton led in the sixties. The heavy riff-rocker "Sunshine of Your Love" and "Badge," his 1968 collaboration with Beatle George Harrison, feature some of his best playing ever. Clapton's post-Cream bands, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos (his 1970 supergroup with Duane Allman) are also represented with such remarkable blues-rock performances as "Presence of the Lord," Bell Bottom Blues" and the timeless rock classic, "Layla." The remainder of the album is devoted to Clapton's seventies solo hits like "After Midnight," I Shot The Sheriff," "Cocaine" and "Wonderful Tonight." Though this collection does not include latter-day Clapton hits like "Tears in Heaven," it's safe to say that the spectacular performances on this album are truly THE CREAM OF ERIC CLAPTON. Free City [ECD]
St. Lunatics: Nelly, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, Ali, City Spud (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Brian McKnight (vocals); Cardan, Penelope (rap vocals); Amber Tabares, Little Rock, Donneash Ferguson (spoken vocals); Steve Eigner (guitar); Bashiri Johnson (percussion). Producers: Jason "Jay E" Epperson, Lavell "City Spud" Webb. Engineers: Steve Eigner, Duro, Gimel "Young Guru" Keaton. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, Sound On Sound Recordings and Unique Studios, New York, New York. It's a testament to the collective spirit of the St. Louis rappers that even after one of their members (Nelly) managed to snag a record deal before they did, and subsequently became a multi-million selling hip-hop star, they continued working. It's even more heartening to see that Nelly is still a member of the group, but FREE CITY isn't just a star's side-project, St. Lunatics are a real group, and all the members contribute equally. Sure, Nelly brings his instantly recognizable (at least it should be, after all the airtime he's gotten) style to the table, and even makes reference to the after-effects of his huge success. But he's not the dominant voice; each of the St. Lunatics has his own sound, and when they come together they create a sound that is the compound result of working together towards acommon goal. While they're capable of the occasional trenchant social observation, St. Lunatics generally avoid gritty thug scenarios in favor of a celebratory, party atmosphere that makes FREE CITY enjoyable on its own terms, regardless of the inherent star power. Call Me
Personnel: Al Green (vocals); Tennie Hodges (guitar); The Memphis Strings (strings); Ed Logan, Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Archie Turner (piano); Charles Hodges (piano, organ); Leroy Hodges (bass); Howard Grimes, Al Jackson (drums); Donna Rhodes, Sandra Rhodes, Charles Chalmers (background vocals). Producers: Willie Mitchell, Al Green. Reissue producer: Tom Cartwright. Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Robert Gordon. Continuing on a successful roll that found his previous two albums go gold, Al Green released CALL ME in 1973. It's another soul classic founded on thewinning tandem of Green and producer Willie Mitchell. Wielding his voice like a precision instrument, Green truly amazes, whether it's harmonizing with his fluttering falsetto on "Have You Been Making Out O.K." or casually crooning along on a carpet of horns, billowing organ and a gentle string section on the title track. Always one to acknowledge his influences, Green covers two country classics, Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," with slow, steady beats that allow him to brand each with his unique sense of phrasing. And religion's powerful pull (it would draw him away from the secular world by the end of the decade) manifests itself on "Jesus Is Waiting," a self-penned testimonial that turns the studio into a church led by Al Green plucking on an acoustic guitar alongside his musical flock. Lateralus
Tool: Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Adam Jones (guitar); Justin Chancellor(bass); Danny Carey (drums). Recorded at Cello Studios, Hollywood, California, The Hook, Big Empty Space and The Lodge, North Hollywood, California. "Schism" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Approaching Tool's LATERALUS with a casual ear would be a careless endeavor, to say the least. The sheer magnitude of the musical and emotional textures is as heady as it is primal. Standing out as one of the defining traits of the Tool sound is Justin Chancellor's hauntingly melodic bass playing, which often launches into a role reversal with the mountainous guitar work of Adam Jones. The best examples of said phenomenon are found in "The Grudge" and "Reflection." Drummer Danny Carey slips easily into the pocket, fearlessly tackling odd time signatures and tasty percussion like few contemporary metal percussionists (best evidenced in "The Patient.") Lyrically, LATERALUS crawls through the cerebral catacombs of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, exploring themes such as the fallout from failed communication ("Schism") and clutching to past pain in a desperate attempt at control ("Grudge"). LATERALUS is yet another art-metal tour de force displaying the collective mastery of Tool. SKU: 1058358

Get Happy
This 1998 reissue contains two bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel includes: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Frank DeVol, Russell Garcia, Marty Paich, Nelson Riddle, Paul Weston (arranger, conductor); Clint Neagley (alto saxophone); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Conrad Gozzo, Cappy Lewis, Vito Mangano, Shorty Sherock, Philip Candreva, Buddy Childers, Stu Williamson, John Best, Pete Candoli, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Don Fagerquist, Manny Klein, Ray Linn, George Werth (trumpet); Dick Noel, Tommy Pederson, George Roberts, Juan Tizol, Harry Betts, Lloyd Ulyate, Edward Kusby, William Sheafer, Milt Bernhardt (trombone); Gene Cipriano, Buddy Collette, Chuck Gentry, Plas Johnson, Ronald Langinger, Jay Corre, Bill Holman, Ted Nash (woodwinds). Producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producer: Jerry Rappaport. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on July 24, 1957 & January 7, 1959; Radio Recorders Annex, Hollywood, California on March 19, 1958 & July 11, 1959; United Recorders, Hollywood, California on September 3, 1959. Originally released on Verve (4036). Includes liner notes by Benny Green. Digitally remastered using 22-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). This is part of Verve's By Request Series. GET HAPPY! is a potpourri of an album, with no less than five name arrangers contributing to the mix, as well as material ranging from Ella's girlhood hit "A-Tisket, A Tasket" to faux "beatnik" numbers like "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight To The Bar" and "Like Young." If allthis sounds like a mish-mosh, let's not forget that Fitzgerald herself is on the scene to provide the continuity. The challenge posed by the too-many-cooks syndrome brings out the spirited best in the singer, making GET HAPPY! a jazz tour-de-force, worthy of inclusion in Verve's superior By Request series. It's a good idea to get away from the traditional and slightly formal Songbook Ella once in a while and dig what she does best: sing exhilarating jazz with the fine tunes, skillful arrangers, and superior musicians. Sinatra had all of these at his disposal too but then he didn't sing jazz, not the way Ella Fitzgerald did. When it comes to pure singing, there is no one to beat her, eight to the bar or otherwise. All The Way...A Decade Of Song
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Celine Dion, R. Kelly, Peabo Bryson, Frank Sinatra (vocals); Walter Afansieff (acoustic guitar, Synclavier acoustic gutiar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, programming); Michael Thompson, Eddie Martinez, Dan Huff, Esbjorn Ohrwall, Jacques Saugy, Dean Parks, Tim Pierce (guitar); Taro Hakase (violin); Joel Peskin (electronic oboe); Jon Gilutin (piano, keyboards); Jeff Bova, Max Martin, Kristian Lundin (keyboards, programming); David Foster (keyboards); Guy Roche (synthesizer); Yoshinobu Takeshita (bass, programming); Steve Buslowe, Thomas Lindberg (bass); Kenny Aronoff, John Robinson (drums); Shania Twain, Todd Rundgren, Mutt Lange, Philip Ingram, Sue Ann Carwell (background vocals). Producers include: David Foster, Guy Roche, R. Kelly, Max Martin, Rene Angelil. "All The Way" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. This greatest-hits package, the first from pop icon Celine Dion, gathers Dion's biggest chart-toppers of the '90s and also includes a handful of new compositions. In the album's liner notes, the honey-voiced singer offers heartfelt thanks to her fans and confirms speculation that she plans take time away from music to focus on her family. Hits include "Beauty and the Beast," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," and "My Heart Will Go On," the impassioned theme song from TITANIC. Among the new songs, her dramatic, tremolo-drenched rendering of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is marked by Dion's typical midsong climaxes. "All the Way" is a tribute to Frank Sinatra, delivered in a manner similar to Natalie Cole's tribute to her father, Nat "King" Cole, on "Unforgettable" -- Dion's vocals float with eerie effect among theghostly strains of Ol' Blue Eyes. The song is also dedicated to Dion's husband, Rene, the man for whom Celine saves her greatest passion. SKU: 1025064

Heavy Horses [Remastered]
Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, guitar, mandolin, flute); Martin Barre (guitar); John Evan (piano, organ); David Palmer (portative pipe organ, keyboards); John Glascock (bass); Barriemore Barlow (drums). Additional personnel: Darryl Way (violin). Recorded at Maison Rouge Studio, Fullham, London in January 1978. All tracks have been digitally remastered. HEAVY HORSES brings together the best elements of Jethro Tull's sonic arsenal: heavy guitars, intricate, evolving song structures, folk tendencies, and Ian Anderson's inimitable growl. The album opens with the bouncy "And the Mouse Police Never Sleeps," a fairy tale-like song about the adventures of a group of forest animals. "Acres Wild" features a disco-esque groove held down byfunky drums and bass. The album's out-and-out highlight is the nearly eight-minute "No Lullaby," a song that undergoes the sort of musical metamorphoses present in Tull's best material. Another exceptional effort is the multi-textured title track, a song written as a tribute to the farm horses in England (which, at the time of the album's release, were declining in number). HEAVY HORSES is one of the band's most heartfelt efforts. SKU: 1080789

Flowers [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. FLOWERS is a compilation of UK tracks and singles put together by Decca Records (UK)in 1967, including tracks that appeared on the English versions of AFTERMATH and BETWEEN THE BUTTONS. The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones, Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Though the Stones would not fully integrate their baroque pop aspirations into their music during the period covered by this collection of mid-'60s material, the Beatles influence had nonetheless begun to take root. While all the earlier elements of the Stones sound are still firmly in place in the folky "Backstreet Girl" and the relentlessly rocking "Let's Spend The Night Together," new sounds also crop up. Cuts like the woodwind-sweetened ballad "Ruby Tuesday," the Middle Eastern-tinged "Mother's Little Helper," and the elaborately produced "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow" set the stage for the full-blown head-trip that would soon unveil itself on THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST. Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand, Don Davis, Wolf Stephenson and Al Bell. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). From his days singing gospel for the Highway Q.C.'s and as Sam Cooke's replacement in the Soul Stirrers, to his bluesy 1996 regional hit "Last Two Dollars," Johnnie Taylor covered an amazing breadth of musical ground. The 3-CD box set LIFETIME presents all sides of Taylor: spiritual singer, blues wailer, and soul superstar. Included are early cuts with the aforementioned Highway Q.C.'s ("I Dreamed That Heaven Was Like This") and the Soul Stirrers ("Out on a Hill," "Until Then"), along with Taylor's first forays into secular music, including his initial recordings for Stax (Merle Travis' "Sixteen Tons," Sam and Dave's "You Don't Know Like I Know"), and his short-lived stint on Cooke's SAR label ("Rome Wasn't Built in a Day"). Also included are the Arkansas native's greatest Stax successes, notably "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)," and "Who's Making Love." Taylor's '70s material is drawn from his time with Columbia andfeatures his biggest hit, the chart-topping "Disco Lady," which also became the first platinum-certified single. By the mid-'80s Taylor was recording for Southern soul label Malaco, represented here by tracks including the prophetic "Soul Heaven," recorded a few months before his death. SKU: 1064851

Daily Operation
Gang Starr: Guru (rap vocals); DJ Premier (programming, scratches). Additional personnel: Lil Dap, Jeru The Damaja (rap vocals). Recorded at D&D Studios, New York, New York. Few groups in hip-hop have remained as consistent as Gang Starr, much of whose product is regarded as having classic or near-classic status. DAILY OPERATION is another such collection. Gang Starr's MC Guru paired up with super-producer DJ Premier in the late '80s; heads began turning with their first smash, NO MORE MR. NICE GUY's "Manifest," in 1989. DAILY OPERATION is an unparalleled blend of street-smart rhythm and carefully woven jazz samples. Guru is at the top of his game, sharing his social insights with a generous helping of street knowledge and wit. Tracks like "Much Too Much" and "Take It Personal" illustrate the duo's hit-making formula, as does "I'm the Man" a collaboration which introduces Gang Starr Foundation members Jeru The Damaja, and Li'lDap of Group Home. DAILY OPERATION amply illustrates Gang Starr's importance in the history of hip-hop. SKU: 1078197

Philosopher's Stone, The (The Unreleased Tapes)
THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE is a collection of rare and previously-unreleased songs spanning Van Morrison's career from 1971-88. The package includes a booklet with track-by-track annotations. Personnel includes: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, harmonica, saxophone); June Boyce (vocals); John Platania (acoustic & electric guitars); Ronnie Montrose (guitar, background vocals); John Blakey, Herbie Armstrong (guitar); Toni Marcus (violin); Jules Broussard (flute, horns); Boots Houston (flute); Jack Schroer (alto saxophone, horns); Colin Titon (tenor saxophone); Pee Wee Ellis (saxophone); Mark Isham (trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards); John Allair (piano, keyboards); Jeff Labes (piano); Bernie Kraus (Moog synthesizer); John Klingberg, Bill Church, David Hayes (bass); Gary Mallaber, Connie Kay (drums); Jackie DeShannon, Judy Clay (background vocals). Recorded between 1971 & 1988. This two-disc set of previously unreleased material has been whispered about in the world of Van fans for ages, and it languished on the Polydor release schedule for so long thatit became a running joke before it was finally released. It turned out to be worth the wait. These cuts, mostly from the '70s, are Van at his funkiest and most soulful, preaching the blues and digging deep into his heart to deliver the goods. Listening to these thirty tunes, one has difficulty wondering how Morrison could have decided against initially releasing them. "Naked In the Jungle" is a funky, percolating workout on par with his classic "I've Been Workin'." "Not Supposed To Break Down" is a touching ballad that pulls unsentimentally at the heartstrings in the manner of MOONDANCE's "Crazy Love." On "Foggy Mountaintop" we find the usually-earnest bard in a playful mood, as he glides atop a 12-bar blues, professing his heartfelt desire for "a plain glass of water, vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top." Covering all phases of facets of Van's career, PHILOSOPHER'S STONE is a revelation that ranks among his finest albums. SKU: 1004860

Radio Ethiopia [Remastered]
Patti Smith Group: Patti Smith (vocals, guitar); Lenny Kaye (guitar, bass, background vocals); Ivan Kral (guitar, bass); Richard Sohl (keyboards, synthesizer); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums, percussion). Engineers: Jay Messina, Brian Sperber. Recorded at The Record Plant East, New York, New York. 1976's RADIO ETHIOPIA, the follow-up to HORSES, turned out to be both more conventional in some ways and more challenging in others. A deciding factor was Jack 'Aerosmith' Douglas replacement of John Cale as producer--the songs were more succinct (for the most part) this time around. The group continued to strive for the perfect balance between thought-provoking poetry and rough rock n' roll, and while RADIO ETHIOPIA contains it's share of highlights, many Smith fans consider it a transitional album not quite upto par with either HORSES or EASTER. The opening "Ask the Angels" was perhaps The Patti Smith Group's most straight-ahead rocker up to that point, while the exploratory reggae-tinged "Ain't It Strange" would be extended concert staple. The tempo is brought down a notch or two on the cool "Poppies," "Abyssinia," and "Chiklets" (the latter a bonus track on the '96 CD remaster), but soon returns to furious rock with "Pumping (My Heart)." Also included is the album's best track, the haunting and heartbroken "Distant Fingers," while the 10-minute title cut features a repetitive heavy metal riff amongst a backdrop of sonic experimentation and a frantic recitation by Smith. Pokemon II - The Power Of One
This is a Hyper CD which, besides containing regular audio tracks, provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Original score by Ralph Schuckett, John Lissauer, Manny Corallo & John Loeffler. Compilation producers: Darren Higman, Craig Kallman. The Pokemon phenomenon probably seems as incomprehensible to adults circa 2000 as did the Smurfs in the '80s and mood rings in the '70s. However, even the most casual observer of youth culture knows how little difference that makes, as long as the kids are sufficiently enthralled. The children who flock to theaters to see POKEMON 2000 would probably listen happily to Bulgarian folk music as long as it accompanied their beloved Pokemon characters. But the adults (or teenagers) who bring them to these theaters will appreciate the high production values applied to the film's pure pop soundtrack. '70s disco queen Donna Summer proves her own staying power with "The Power of One," while Alysha provides anear-fatal dose of cuteness with "Dreams." Veteran parodist Weird Al Yankovic applies his accordion know-how to (what else?) "Polkamon," and the B-52's, old hands at pop whimsy, will ring some nostalgic bells with the children of the '80s on "The Chosen One." Don't try to fight it--Pokemon will win in the end. SKU: 1050081

Now And Zen
Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals); Phil Johnstone (vocals, keyboards); Doug Boyle (guitar); Phil Scragg (bass); Chris Blackwell (drums). Producers: Robert Plant, Tim Palmer, Phil Johnstone. With his fourth solo release, 1988's NOW & ZEN, Robert Plant finally began to let the influence of his former band Led Zeppelin seep into his current songwriting. While his first three solo albums had a more modern production and were keyboard or synth-based, NOW & ZEN signaled Plant's return to a more direct sound. It's dominated by guitar (comparable at times to U2)--no doubt due to the fact that a whole new line-up is backing him. Highlights include the uptempo hit "Tall Cool One" (which features a cameo by his old buddy Jimmy Page, as well as several samples from past Zep classics), the majestic rock of "Heaven Knows," and the grand ballad "Ship of Fools." Goodbye Cruel World [Remastered]
Full performer name: Elvis Costello & The Attractions. Elvis Costello & The Attractions: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar, anvil); Steve Nieve (keyboards, synthesizer); Bruce Thomas (bass); Pete Thomas (drums). Additional personnel: Nick Lowe, Daryl Hall, Green (vocals); Gary Barnacle (saxophone, electric saxophone); Jim Paterson (trombone); Luis Jardim (percussion); Maurice Worm. Producers: Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Bassman. Principally recorded at Sarm West Studios,London, England in 1984. Originally released on Columbia (39429). Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. Don't believe the hype. Critics (and Costello himself) generally regard this as Elvis' worst album, but that's far from true. For one thing, it's hard to dispute the overblown MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE's claim to said title. For another, there are too many damn good songs to permit GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD to be overlooked. There may be a lack of focus in the production and arrangements, but any album that opens with the pop-soul artistry of "The Only Flame in Town" and closes with the stirring anthem "Peace In Our Time" has plenty going for it. In between, there's media satire ("Worthless Thing"), classic Costello neurosis ("Inch by Inch") and effective R&B reverence ("I Wanna Be Loved"). Not a good starting point for neophytes, but recommended to true EC fans. SKU: 1019922

Division Bell, The
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Rick Wright (vocals, keyboards); Nick Mason (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Tim Renwick (guitar); Dick Parry (tenor saxophone); Bob Ezrin (keyboards, percussion); Guy Pratt (bass); Gary Wallis (percussion, programming); Jon Carin (programming, keyboards); Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, Carol Kenyon, Jackie Sheridan, Rebecca Leigh-White (background vocals). Engineers: Keith Grand, Andrew Jackson, Steve McLaughin. The slow melodious instrumental overture that announces "Cluster One" trumpets the return of one of rock's most enigmatic ensembles; art rockers supreme--Pink Floyd. And in reclaiming center stage in the arena, THE DIVISION BELL straightaway tolls a characteristic chime of ambivalence, as a voice cries out from the heart of a massed chorale and strings, "What Do You Want From Me." But for longtime fans of Pink Floyd, THE DIVISION BELL offers an immense, reassuring sense of scale, as David Gilmour and company continue to expand upon the dark subtexts, rich orchestral textures and densely detailed arrangements that are the band's psychic and sonic signatures. A song such as the moody film noire jazz-pop intro of "Wearing The Inside Out" suggests the mysterious futuristic romanticism of the BLADE RUNNER soundtrack (or vice versa), with lyrics that offer a typically mordant view of life: the outcast in the center of his (or her) self-destructed world, striving for peace and redemption. And somewhere in the heart of all this darkness, David Gilmour's arching, anthemic guitar provides a powerful melodicfocus, especially when he can provide all the "vocal" intensity himself, as on the moody instrumental tone poem "Marooned," where he seems to be floating out of Earth orbit until Nick Mason's strong, centered drumming grounds his elisions in the gravitational pull of a simple backbeat. The closing "High Hopes" mixes mysticism with a dream-the-impossible groove, as Pink Floyd looks back longingly at old times and old friends. THE DIVISION BELL was nominated for Best Engineered Album. SKU: 1005914

Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection, The
Personnel includes: Yma Sumac (vocals); Les Baxter, Moises Vivanco (arranger). Compilation producers: Tom Cartwright, Alan Eichler, Cheryl Pawelski. Includes liner notes by Alan Eichler. Digitally remastered by Odea Murphy (Tower Mastering). Yma Sumac is an outrageous Goddess of the exotic and the unusual. Her music conjures images of an imaginary ancient Peru as filtered through cartoon-like 1950s Hollywood, filled with pagan sacrifices, sun rituals, Amazon headhunters, and her, a high priestess, reigning over the proceedings with that incredible five octave voice. Yma Sumac was born in the tiny mountain village of Ichocan, Peru to a family allegedly descended from Atahualpa, the last Inca. While in her teens she and Peruvian composer Moises Vivanco began making the music that combined Peruvian folk themes with complex orchestral arrangements over her exotic vocalizations. THE ULTIMATE YMA SUMAC COLLECTION brings together the best tracks from her decade-long recording career for Capitol (which spanned the '50s). Included in this collection is the eerie "Chuncho (The Forest Creatures)" from her classic INCA TAQUI album where she imitates all the creatures of the rainforest over a hypnotic guitar-based groove, and the exotic standard "Wimoweh," which later became a hit for the Tokens as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The collection also includes rare tracks andpreviously unreleased material, as well as a collectible booklet that has reproductions of all Sumac's album covers and other wonderful photos of her in her Peruvian drag. Funkadelic
Funkadelic: Ed Hazel (vocals, guitar); Bill Nelson (vocals, bass); Tiki Fulwood (vocals, drums); George Clinton, Fuzzy Haskins, Grady Thomas, Calvin Simon, Raymond Davis (vocals); Tawl Ross (guitar); Mickey Atkins (organ). Engineers include: Milan Bogden, Russ Terrana, Ed Wolfrum. Recorded at Terra Shirma Sound Studios, Detroit, Michigan. Funkadelic's self-titled 1969 debut may not be on the same plateau as the group's later, all-encompassing masterpieces (MAGGOT BRAIN, COSMIC SLOP, etc.), but does serve as the strong foundation upon which their early 70's masterworks were built. Along with Jimi Hendrix's band, Funkadelic is one of the first units to inject funk with hard rock. Whereas funk pioneer James Brown concentrates on creating air-tight, precise grooves, Funkadelic keeps things loose, raw, and groovy. Drug experimentation also plays a prominent role in the band's early work, perhaps never as evidently as on FUNKADELIC. From the beginning, singer George Clinton has been the band's undisputed leader. He wrote or co-wrote nearly all of FUNKADELIC's seven tracks and also served as the album's producer. Bassist Billy Nelson and guitarist Eddie Hazel are superb instrumentalists, as heard on the slowly evolving "Music For My Mother," the frantic "I Got A Thing," and the album's Motown soul-inflected hit single "I Bet You" (the latter featuring great vocal interplay between all members). And the seeds for such future Funkadelic epicsas "Maggot Brain" and "Wars of Armageddon" can be traced to the album's longest compositions, "Mommy, What's A Funkadelic?" and "Good Old Music." Milk Eyed Mender, The
Personnel: Joanna Newsom (vocals, vocals, harp, piano, Wurlitzer piano, harpsichord); Noah Georgeson (guitar, background vocals). Joanna Newsom plays the harp, looks like an elf princess, and sings in a squeaky child-like voice, all of which contribute to her unique charm. Like her pal and frequent collaborator Devendra Banhart, she's also a shining light of the early 2000s neo-folk movement, which bonds quirky wordplay and fuzzy eccentricity with a deep reverence for authentic rural folk. Whether accompanying herself on harp, harpsichord, or piano, Newsom plunges into the archaic depths of American roots music and cherry-picks the most heartbreaking passages, weaving everything together with lyrics of shockingly formal eloquence that present dense poetic imagery in the vein of BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME-era Dylan. Songs like "Sprout and the Bean," "Peach, Plum, Pear," and "Sadie" weave enough elaborate visions for a dozen ballads, adding something more than the expected folksy tweeness. Throughout THE MILK-EYED MENDER, Newsom's lulling harp and odd vocalizing combine to create something utterly original, yet deeply familiar, standing firm at the crossroads between outsider art and genuine brilliance.
