Released three years after his departure from Black Sabbath, DIARY is Ozzy's second solo album. A true metal masterpiece, the record features Randy Rhoads (previously in Quiet Riot). DIARY and its successors showed that Ozzy could not only make it on his own, but exceed his former bandmates in popularity.
"Over The Mountain" rumbles in and features the often imitated-never duplicated soloing of Randy Rhoads. The man is arguably the most influential guitarist in heavy rock besides Eddie Van Halen. "Flying High Again" follows, and is Ozzy's ode to non-stop partying. "Tonight" is a wonderful ballad, showing Randy's tasteful restraint. "S.A.T.O." is vintage Osbourne, with metal riffage only he can deliver. The title track begins with beautiful electric and acoustic guitar overdubs, and concludes the record with bombast. It is clear the Ozzman is at hispeak on this album. Ozzy will never be considered a "singer's singer," and his penchant for biting the heads off live animals may overshadow his musical abilities. But albums like DIARY show why he will forever be the Godfather of Heavy Metal.

Laurie Anderson's 1994 album, BRIGHT RED is the outgrowth of STORIES FROM THE NEW BIBLE, a series of tales developed by Laurie Anderson and subsequently published in book form. These STORIES were also performed at live concerts ("readings") in the early '90s. THE UGLY ONEWITH THE JEWELS was recorded at a London reading in 1993.
Accompanied by minimal instrumentation-often Anderson alone on keyboards and violin-she spins her tales. Her stories cover a wide range of topics, but somehow seem to be part of a single, ever-evolving whole. She tells of a bizarre artists' retreat on a small Pacific island ("Word of Mouth"), an ill-fated hitchhiking trip north ("The Geographic North Pole"), and the by-turns amusing and creepy tale of "The Hollywood Strangler," a slightly reworked version of an interlude on her masterpiece, UNITED STATES. Trivia fans should note that preeminent ambient sound painter Brian Eno appears here, guesting on keyboards on "Maria Teresa Teresa Maria."

TALA MATRIX just sizzles from the start: witness Hussain's unbelievable tabla patterns setting the air afire throughout the seven-minute beatfest that is "Secret Channel," as Laswell lays a bed of bass and supple electronic cushions. The Coral's much-anticipated debut album features a psychedelic cover one might expect to find on a tattered, dog-eared LP at some ex-hippie's garage sale. While the music within does often sound spun by someone who spends days sitting in dark rooms, contemplating a chaotic world while soaking in Screamin' Jay Hawkins or some obscure otherworldly find, thereis something contemporary in the style. Perhaps it's the ability to draw from many sources, from the knifepoint pop sensibilities of the Kinks to the grinding fire of Jimi Hendrix.
Though they enter on the heels of a glut of nostalgia-tinged bands (Soundtrack of Our Lives, Vines, Hives, etc.), the Coral cast a bit of a wider net on their debut, shapeshifting styles, sometimes even on the same song. "Goodbye" opens with a blistering riff and slips into a darkly melodic Doors-ish middle section before breaking down to a Dave Clark Five-esque chorale at the end. And the sextet proves it can produce an unforgettable rock song on the haunting "Waiting For the Heartaches."

The pure, breathy voice of Colin Blunstone was a key element of the Zombies' sound, and his subtle delivery of such Zombies hits as "Time of the Season" and "She's Not There" is forever ingrained in the public's pop consciousness. Anthologized here, Blunstone's subsequent solo career found him straying from the BritishInvasion sound of his former band, pursuing an artier, more genteel framework for his delicate voice. One might call him the thinking man's Art Garfunkel, applying his velvety tones to gentle ballads that skirt the borders of pop, folk, rock, and art song.
Hearing Blunstone tackle Tim Hardin's folk-rock gem "Misty Roses," it's apparent how much emotion he can put into his hushed vocals. An angular string section pushes the tune into another realm entirely. On several tracks, the artfully arranged strings complement Blunstone's voice impeccably, making for expertly understated chamber pop. The pop side occasionally takes over the production aesthetic, but Blunstone's range proves broad enough to open into it. In fact, one of the most striking tracks is the relatively up-tempo pop-rock closer "This is Your Captain Calling," a quirky, catchy song that would have been a top-40 hit in a sane world.

When Def Leppard arrived on American shores with 1980's ON THROUGH THENIGHT, they were lumped with a New Wave of British Heavy Metal that also counted Iron Maiden part of the movement. Yet even then, the Sheffield quintet's inescapable pop sense separated them from their heavier brethren. As the '80's progressed, Def Lep soldiered on through tragedy, lengthy multi-year stays in the studio and quite a few world tours. VAULT culls the hits from the millions of albums they sold by way of MTV ("Photograph"), soundtracks ("Two Steps Behind"), and obvious sexual innuendo ("Pour Some Sugar On Me").
Influenced by the glam postures of Mott The Hoople, Bowie, T. Rex and Slade, Def Lep transformed their love of these artists into a sound shaped by Joe Elliott's raspy vocals, the synergy fueled by Phil Collen (who replaced Pete Willis in '83) and the late Steve Clark's guitars, and Rick Allen's punchy backbeat (seemingly unaffected by his loss of an arm in '85). Heavy guitars, sweet hooks and a rare ability to balance a harder-edged side ("Foolin'") with earnest power ballads ("Bringin' On The Heartbreak") show why Def Lep continue to soldier on long after pop-metal's '80s heyday, and they make VAULT a safe worth cracking.

In the 20 years that elapsed since 1980's GAUCHO, Steely Dan linchpins Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have dabbled in solo projects, touredwith the Rock & Soul Review, and spent most of the '90s gearing up for the band's long-awaited eighth studio album, TWO AGAINST NATURE. Only nine songs long, TWO AGAINST NATURE is a clear example of quality over quantity. As has been the modus operandi throughout Steely Dan's existence, Fagen and Becker have gathered an impressive backup crew of jazz players with impeccable chops to season the proceedings.
With both Becker and Fagen hovering around age 50, it's not surprising that most of this rich material deals with the uncertainties of middle age. Themes addressed include the complexities of relationships, whether they involve family ("Cousin Dupree"), a toxic significant other ("Negative Girl"), or an old flame met by chance ("What a Shame About Me"). Throughout, Steely Dan manages to successfully straddle the line between the empty calories of light jazz, and the fusion from which the duo has previously borrowed nuances.

If albums could be rolled and smoked, this would be one to keep for a special occasion, passed from friend to friend in a grin-inducing haze of contentment. Everything, from the Neon Park artwork to thesleeve notes, is goodtime. The line-up of the band on FEATS DON'T FAIL ME NOW works equally well on composition and playing. The songs, from the rhythmically chunky "Rock And Roll Doctor" to the sprawlingly energetic "Cold Cold Cold/Tripe Face Boogie," roll along without looking to left or right, and the arrangement is so tight you couldn't slide a Rizla in sideways. Country funk at its best, just remember not to inhale.

For a singer-songwriter who proclaims himself "somewhat to theleft of Mao" it's no surprise that Steve Earle has drawn the ire of the right for challenging the status quo, particularly around the one-year anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks. The bone of conention on his 2002 outing JERUSALEM is "John Walker's Blues," a moody, mid-tempo number that attempts to explore the reasoning behind "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh's actions. It triggered a wave of knee-jerk reactions accusing Earle of being everything from the second coming of Hanoi Jane to a washed-up anti-American opportunist.
Conservatives will likewise scoff at his trenchant commentaries on illegal immigration (the Augie Meyers-flavored Tex-Mex shuffle "What's A Simple Man To Do") and the transformation of baby boomers from idealistic revolutionaries to self-absorbed merchants of greed (the chugging rocker "Amerika v. 6.0 [The Best We Can Do]). Earle brifely changes gears to duet with Emmylou Harris on the gorgeous lament "I Remember You," and wields a Dylanish harmonica and twangy guitar to end on a high note with a closing title track that optimistically awaits the coming of peace to the Middle East.

Following the platinum success of SLOWHAND, BACKLESS continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of NO REASON TO CRY, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Levy in particular, proved her worth by co-writing the slide-drenched "Roll It" with Slowhand. Her passionate testifying on this as well as her sparkling harmonies on the Don Williams-influenced "Promises" made up for fellow back-up singer Yvonne Elliman's departure following SLOWHAND's release.
Clapton's choice of composers to cover included Dylan ("Walk Out In The Rain," "If I Don't Be There By Morning"), J.J. Cale ("I'll Make Love To You Anytime") and Okie Danny Flowers ("Tulsa Time"). In addition, Slowhand added a nearly eight-minute interpretation of the blues standard "Early In The Morning" that finds him milking his mojo for all its worth. But it's E.C.'s original compositions that particularly stand out, such as the funky shuffle that is "Watch Out For Lucy" and the Band-flavored "Golden Ring."

The Australian pop group led by Russel Hitchcock and Graham Russell dominated early-'80s AM radio in the U.S. with their soft, romantic ballads. Unlike many of their peers, though, they had a gift for genuinely memorable, melodically substantive songs. Main writer Graham R. handily mixed MOR with a Paul McCartney/classic-pop influence to turn out the likes of "Lost in Love" and countless others. He and Hitchcock traded off on lead vocals (often within the same song) in a totally organic, seamless way that became a trademark. By 1974, if you looked up "self-indulgence" in Webster's, you were likely to see Lou Reed's picture. In his professional and personal life, he brought hedonism to new heights, diving headlong into the world of drugs (even miming heroin injection on stage), flirting with androgyny and purposefully decadent sexual taboos. Musically, he indulged in the stylistic excesses of the day, as exemplified by this live album.
Buoyed by the twin guitar attack of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter, he transforms Velvets classics like "White Light White Heat," "Sweet Jane" and "Rock 'N' Roll" into pomp/glam-rock showpieces, complete with (very) extended arrangements, elaborate instrumental sections, and of course, plenty of long guitar solos. Those who cling to the image of Reed as punk godfather mightbe mystified by his transformation here into Rock God. Those with a more intimate understand of Reed's chameleon-like tendencies will recognize this as an unusual, often elegant and attractive phase in a long, complex career.

A gigantic leap from the frail folky to a major writer of breathtaking depth. Critics were unanimous in recognizing the first icon of 70s singer-songwriters. Combining folk roots with pop sensibility and delicately laced with jazz (just listen to the soprano saxophone at the end of "Cold Blue SteelAnd Sweet Fire" by Tom Scott), this marked the first in a series of classic albums from Mitchell. The outstanding use of metaphors in "Electricity" comparing love to electricity has rarely been bettered. In the days before there was grunge or thrash, a movement called punk arose as a populist response to the conformity of corporate rock, and a return to the garage roots of the music. Punk, new wave...whatever you want to call it, the movement was quickly co-opted by the major labels and radio as the best bands quickly evaporated into the pop mainstream while the rest faded into obscurity or day jobs.
"I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out, and I stepped in line to walk amongst the dead," singer-guitarist Billy Joe screams on the opening "Burnout," enunciating a timely slacker sentiment over a decidedly punk trio track, roaring through your speakers like a freight train powered by old Ramones and Clash records. One can hear the complaints of DOOKIE articulated in a thousand smoke-filled bedrooms throughout America. On "Longview," tongue not so firmly implanted in cheek, they extend their view of slacker apathy to apply to the fading joys of masturbation, but quickly answer their own ennui with the real world complaints of "Welcome To Paradise," begging the question, is there anything out there?
On a song like "She," Green Day seemingly answers all the questions of apathy with a furious groove and lyrics that urge listeners "locked up in a world that's been planned for you" to "smash the silence with the brick of self-control." And with "Sassafrass Roots" Green Day ups the slacker ante dealt up by Beck on "Loser" by asking, "So why are you alone wasting your time, when you could bewith me wasting your time...may I waste your time, too?" The humor and furious musicianship Green Day display on DOOKIE (listen to them echo "Sweet Home Alabama" on "When I Come Around") undercuts all the talk of apathy, confusion and lack of direction by providing a whaling home-grown alternative to business as usual rock. And wasn't that what punk was all about?

Saint Etienne's third album, TIGER BAY, was the band's last release of new material prior to a nearly four-year layoff which saw singer Sarah Cracknell record a pure-pop solo album and keyboardists/arrangers/producers Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs run a dance-oriented record label. TIGER BAY, which was released in 1994, is the one Saint Etienne album on which the North London trio's love for club rhythmsand sound-for-sound's-sake takes precedence over the group's crafty pop songwriting skills. The single "Hug My Soul," which appears in two radically different versions, is a ticking, occasionally swirling melange of dancefloor beats and uncommonly breathy Cracknell vocals. She uses the same technique to excellent effect on the album's pulsing opener, "Urban Clearway." The soulful "Former Lover" and "Like a Motorway" are more melancholy tunes that work just as well as the more uptempo songs. TIGER BAY is an atmospheric, hypnotic gem.

This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent "With a Christmas Heart," "This Is Christmas," and "A Kiss for Christmas."But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard Marx co-wrote "Every Year, Every Christmas." For R&B fans, it's hard to do much better than THIS IS CHRISTMAS.
