Not Another Teen Movie
Keeping with the theme of the film NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE and its relentless parodying of teen movies from the preceding two decades, the accompanying soundtrack ups the ante with '80s classics covered by '90s alt-rock acts. Depeche Mode and New Order fare best as Smashing Pumpkins ("Never Let Me Down Again") and Scott Weiland ("But Not Again") tackle DM while Orgy ("Blue Monday") and Stabbing Westward ("Bizarre Love Triangle")pump the decibels up for New Order. One-hit wonders also get the nod, whether it's Teutonic popster Nena (Goldfinger's ska-driven "99 Red Balloons"), Brits Modern English (Mest's staccato "I Melt With You") or Soft Cell (Marilyn Manson's eerie "Tainted Love"). Elsewhere, Saliva interprets The Pretenders ("Message Of Love"), Good Charlotte puts a punk-pop spin on OMD ("If You Leave") and Muse pays homage to the Smiths ("Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want"). The quintessential nod to teen pop culture comes via Phantom Planet (featuring RUSHMORE's Jason Schwartzman) serving up a harmony-drenched version of Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby" (originally recorded for the Fast Times At Ridgemont High soundtrack). Holy Bible, The (10th Anniversary Edition/Remastered/Parental Advisory/+DVD) [Digipak] [PA]
Full title: The Holy Bible: 10th Anniversary Edition. Additional package information: Remaster, Digipak. Manic Street Preachers: James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitar); Richey James (guitar); Nicky Wire (bass); Sean Moore (drums). All songs written by Manic Street Preachers. Manic Street Preachers: James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitar); Richey James (guitar); Nicky Wire (bass guitar); Sean Moore (drums). The tragic and unresolved disappearance of Richey Edwards looms larger than life every time this album is played. Just as they were being hailed as the potential "next big thing," the band was thrown into disarray, and as a result, this credible album was somewhat overlooked while the world searched for Richey. Now that the dust has settled and people have accepted his likely demise, this album can at last be appreciated. Even though the spoken introduction "OfWalking Abortion" is spookily prophetic, the understated quality of all the songs puts this album much closer to the gigantic EVERYTHING MUST GO than its success would indicate. Part Time Punks (The Very Best Of Television Personalities)
There are many Television Personalities compilations, but this 1999 22-track disc is as close to definitive as any. Compiled by band leader and sole permanent member Daniel Treacy, PART TIME PUNKS starts with 1978's "14th Floor" and continues through to 1989's "Sad Mona Lisa." This means that excellent albums like 1992's CLOSER TO GOD are overlooked, but it's difficult to limit this prolific band's best work within a circumscribed time frame. Collecting rare singles like 1980's "Smashing Time," and tracks from classic albums like 1981's AND DON'T THE KIDS JUSTLOVE IT and 1985's THE PAINTED WORD, this is a terrific overview of one of the most influential British pop bands of the postpunk era. The extensive liner notes are by Alan McGee, founder of the archetypal British indie Creation Records and the Television Personalities' self-proclaimed number one fan. SKU: 3102548

Bringing It All Back Home [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Al Gorgone, John Hammond, Jr., Bruce Langhorne, Kenneth Rankin (guitar); Paul Griffin, Frank Owens (piano); William E. Lee, Joseph Macho, Jr., John Sebastian (bass); Bobby Gregg (drums). Recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, New York, New York in January 1965. Howls of rage greeted Dylan as he presented the world with folk rock--he was roundly booed at both the Newport Folk Festival and the Royal Albert Hall.Yet here is one of those moments of cross-influence that changed the course of popular music. BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME gave His Bobness an audience on a plate; it was a massive breakthrough. An album of two different sides, acoustic (his past) and electric (his future), it contains milestones in the blues-rockers "Maggie's Farm" and "Subterranean Home Sick Blues," the future Byrds hit "Mr. Tambourine Man," and the transcendently poetic "It's Alright, Ma." You can debate the "is it folk or is it rock" argument forever. It's merely Dylan at one of his many peaks. SKU: 1086965

Full Collapse
Personnel includes: Erin Farley, Sal Villanueva, Frank Giokas (guitar); Tim Gilles (strings); Joe Darone, Ton Schlatter (background vcals). Recorded at Big Blue Meenie Studios, Jersey City, New Jersey. Full-on punk rock from these New Jersey rockers and this Chicago punk/hardcore label on the former's sophomore full length. Thursday's commitment and energy are in full effect from the outset of this hyper-kinetic set, while their debt to their contemporaries (and some of their labelmates) is clear on such songs as "Concealer" and "Autobiography of a Nation." Musicality and songwriting smarts combine on songs suchas the incendiary "Paris in Flames" and the punk rock ballad "How Long Is the Night." Additionally, FULL COLLAPSE is bookended by a couple of soft, almost pastoral songs (the abstrusely titled "A0001" and "i1100") that stand in stark contrast to the hardcore mayhem that lies between. FULL COLLAPSE is a fully realized, cohesive set that mixes youthful energy with lyrical and musical zeal to intoxicating effect. SKU: 1062226

Bridge Over Troubled Water [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Art Garfunkel (vocals); Fred Carter, Jr. (guitar); Jimmy Haskell, Ernie Freeman (strings); Larry Knechtel (keyboards); Joe Osborn (bass); Hal Blaine (drums) Los Incas. Producers include: Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Roy Halee. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between August11 and November 15, 1969. Originally released on Columbia Records (9914). Includes liner notes by Bud Scoppa. All tracks have been digitally remastered. After half a decade of pop superstardom, America's favorite folk-rock duo were just about ready to go their separate ways (at least Simon was), but not before releasing this gem of a swan song. Possibly S&G's most diverse album, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER firmly established them as creators of pop standards on a par with Irving Berlin or Johnny Mercer. The title tune alone, a beautifully unfolding gospel-tinged vow of emotional commitment, places them in the pop hall of fame forever. The story obviously doesn't stop there. Foreshadowing Simon's solo work, the jubilant love song "Cecilia" and the poignant, yearning "El Condor Pasa" both turn to the traditions of other cultures for musical inspiration. The highly metaphorical "The Boxer" is the only real throwback to Simon's more self-conscious early work. The transcendent production of "The Only Living Boy in New York" puts a pop sheen on an early example of Simon's nascent Randy Newman influence. What a way to say goodbye. SKU: 1062557

Thick As A Brick [Remastered]
This edition of THICK AS A BRICK contains a bonus live track and interview. Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, guitar, violin, flute, saxophone, trumpet); Martin Barre (guitar, lute); John Evan (piano, organ, harpsichord); Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (bass); Barriemore Barlow (tympani, percussion). Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. While never as high-minded or technically facile as the likes of Yes or ELP, Tull began incorporating complex time changes, sophisticated harmonic structures and highly developed lyrical themes on THICK AS A BRICK, the realization of the artistic growth begun on AQUALUNG. It's here that Tull finally bursts into full-blown prog-rock mode. While AQUALUNG was a group of discrete compositions united by a theme, THICK AS A BRICK consists of one extended piece that occupies the length of the album. Lyrically, Anderson's intentions are a bit more obscure here, but the sophisticated arrangements and virtuosic performances are enough to carry the show. John Evan's piano and organ are at the heart of this complex piece, which moves through an endless succession of tempos, moods and modes in a manner similar to vintage Genesis or the aforementioned Yes, but with a grittier edge. Most importantly, the whole things flows in a cohesive manner. THICK AS A BRICK demands close attention, but rewards the same handsomely. SKU: 1015485

Olivia
Personnel: Olivia, Jimmy Cozier (vocals); Warren Wilson (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Doug Allen, Joshua P. Thompson, (guitar, keyboards); Carlton Savage, Xavier Marquez, George Waddenius (guitar); John "Magic" Peters, Rob Fusari (keyboards, programming); Victor Jones, Eddie Allen, Bruce Williams, Angel Vasquez (horns); Lamar "Kaptain Khronic" Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Quincy Patrick (keyboards); Dexter Whittaker (bass); Rufus Blaq (background vocals). Producers include: Josh Thompson, Warren Wilson, Rob Fusari, Masked Men, Jimmy Cozier. Engineers include: Warren Wilson, Earl Cohen, "Prince" Charles Alexander. Move over Brandy and Monica, there's another single-name R&B diva in town, and she's called Olivia. From the sultry feel of "Bizounce" to the street-smart hip-hop feel of "Are U Capable," Olivia's eponymous debut recording finds her fully capable of filling the 21st-century pop diva role with style. The young Brooklynite makes her way to the public's ears by way of veteran music impresario Clive Davis, who knows a little about maximizing an artist's pure pop potential. That potential is realized in spades on OLIVIA, as the youthful siren moves easilyfrom romantic R&B ballads full of lush melodies and graceful melisma, to hard-edged, hip-hop-savvy tunes that bespeak a first-hand knowledge of the school of hard knocks. Despite her youth, Olivia sounds like she's been around the block a couple of times and she's come back with a bagful of songs about it. SKU: 1063621

Gypsy
This 1999 reissue contains four bonus tracks not on the original release. Music composed by Julie Styne. Lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim. Principal cast includes: Ethel Merman (Mama Rose); Jack Klugman (Herbie); Sandra Church (Louise); Lane Bradbury (June); Paul Wallace (Tulsa); Jaqueline Mayro (Baby June); Karen Moore (Baby Louise); Faith Dane (Mazeppa); Chotzi Foley (Electra); Maria Karnilova (Tessie); Bobby Brownell, Gene Castle, Steve Curry, Billy Harris (Newsboys); Marvin Arnold, Ricky Coll, Don Emmons, Michael Parks, Ian Tucker, Paul Wallace, David Winters (Farmboys). Producer: Goddard Lieberson. Reissue producer: Thomas Z. Shepard. Recorded on May 24, 1959. Originally released on Columbia (OL 5420). Includes original liner notes by George B. Dale and reissue liner notes by Martin Gottfried and Tom Sheppard. Digitally remastered by Todd Whitelock, Robert Wolff and Darcy Proper. GYPSY, which opened on May 21, 1959 at the Broadway Theatre in New York, remains one of the most enduring works of American musical theater, thanks largely to Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim's memorable score and the inimitable voice of Ethel Merman, all beautifully captured on the original cast recording. For Styne, GYPSY was a crowning achievement and a perfect example of his ability to suit his music for a particular singer. And while Sondheim had initially hoped to write not only the lyrics but the music as well, the task turned out to be the ultimate proving ground: his lyrics were perfectly suited both to the music and the characters. This remastered version of the original cast recording offers a few departures from its predecessor, particularly in the restoration of several edits and the occasional use of alternate takes. As explained in the liner notes, a longer production schedule (to say nothing of more advanced technology) allows for careful examination of the original masters, a luxury not afforded the original producers, who were under pressure to get the job done as quicklyas possible. In addition, the reissue contains several bonus tracks not included in the original release. SKU: 5085934

Richard D. James
Aphex Twin: Richard D. James. In a career filled with re-invention, Aphex Twin comes full circle, with an album named after his real-life identity, RICHARD D. JAMES. James performs his usual boundary-jumping, genre-crashing magic, constantly changing gears and never standing still. Melodies are drawn from an infinite variety of sonic sources and juxtaposed with harsh, stuttering breakbeats and placid keyboards in ever-changing permutations. James manages to coax a wide range of emotion from his synthesizers, from the whimsical, playful melodic line which introduces "4." to the harsh beat and angular accompaniment of "Cornish Acid." "Peek 824545201" throws downa skittish, slithering beat, while "Corn Mouth" is a jumble of techno shrapnel. "To Cure A Weaking Child" makes haunting use of sampled voices of children, reassembling them into words and repeated phrases. Drums and keyboard sounds meld into one another freely and playfully. James further showcases his ability to recycle traditional sounds into altogether new forms with the string arrangements of "Goon Gumpas" and "Girl/Boy Song," but nowhere is this gift utilized more effectively than in "Logan Rock Witch," whose goofy rhythm and church organ support a chiming, sparse, guitar-like melody line. Accelerator
Royal Trux: Neil Hagerty (vocals, guitar, kazoo, midi, bass, keyboards, pennywhistle, percussion, harmonica); Jennifer Herrema (vocals); Timothy McClain (synthesizer); Ken Nasta (floor tom, snare, cymbals, cowbell); Rian Murphy (background vocals). Indie darlings Royal Trux do their best to embody the spirit of trailer trash America on ACCELERATOR, but their irony and eclecticism betray them as postmodern stoner artistes. Imagine Ween on a particularly bad trip, armed with a stack of Marshall amps, and you'll have an idea of the sonic foundation upon which ACCELERATOR is based. Distorted power chords and riffs vie with off-kilter percussion and filtered, goofy vocals delivering even goofier, dadaistic lyrics. "Juicy Juice" is representative, with nursery rhyme- simplistic lyrics, full throttle '70s-sounding guitar riffs and plenty of gonzo enthusiasm. If you don't takeyour turn-of-the-millennium indie rock too seriously, ACCELERATOR may be the way to go. SKU: 1002157

Criss Cross [Remastered]
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charles Rouse (tenor saxophone); John Ore (bass); Frankie Dunlop (drums). Recorded in New York, New York between November 6, 1962 and March 29, 1963. Includes liner notes by John Swenson and Dick Katz. This is part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. CRISS-CROSS is the result of five sessions with the ever-present Charlie Rouse on tenor plus the rhythm compliment of drummer Frankie Dunlop and bassist John Ore. It was recorded at a time when Monk had actually become a popular beaticon; his iconoclast mug appeared on the cover of Time barely a year later. While the majority of the material here is Monk's, his whimsical way with the two standards, "Tea For Two" and "Don't Blame Me," makes them special treats. The former is like an old suitcase bursting at the seams with zany new toys, the melody rife with Monk's truncated chromatic tails, his solo chunky with erratic-sounding bass comping, all of it amusingly bookended by the tongue-in-cheek straightness of Ore's intro and Monk's final toy-piano notes. By contrast, Rouse stays true to the compartmentalized quality of the head on "Criss-Cross," blowing short, dense strands that sound like the flight path of a beatnik butterfly as Dunlop responds sympathetically, all the while maintaining a solidly swinging base. CRISS-CROSS is choice Monk finery. SKU: 1086170
