Emotion
Personnel includes: Martina McBride (vocals); Biff Watson (acoustic & electric guitars, bouzouki); Paul Worley (6- & 12-string acoustic guitars, background vocals); Dan Dugmore (electric & 12-string guitars); Douglas Lancio (electric guitar, bouzouki); J.T. Corenflos, Dann Huff (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); John Catchings (cello); John Hobbs (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Steve Nathan (Hammond B-3 organ, Wurlitzer piano, synthesizer); Joe Chemay (bass); Lonnie Wilson, Greg Morrow (drums); Tom Rhoady, Terry McMillan (percussion); Mark Hammond (drum programming); Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Tom Douglas, Erik Hellerman, Wes Hightower, Troy Johnson (background vocals). Principally recorded at The Money Pit, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. "I Love You" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. EMOTION, Martina McBride's fifth release (not counting her Christmas CD), is a fine collection of songs that show off the singer's magnificent voice. McBride's vocal range gets a real workout, from the restrained prettiness of "There You Are" and "Good Bye" to the powerful, emotion-packed readings of "From the Ashes" and "This Uncivil War." McBride, who is known for believe-in-yourself, strong-woman anthems like "Independence Day" and "A Broken Wing," offers a couple more here, "Do What You Do" and "It's My Time." The latter is one of the strongest performances on the CD. Though EMOTION is a country album, two of the tracks seem designed for pop crossover success. "I LoveYou," first heard on the RUNAWAY BRIDE soundtrack, is a song that has the same feel and lyrical wordplay as Faith Hill's career-making smash, "This Kiss," while "Anything and Everything" is a mid-tempo love song that would fit right in on any soft rock radio station. The most unusual track on the album is "Love's the Only House," a song that sports a catchy chorus despite its serious social message. SKU: 1040894

Gris-gris
Personnel includes: Dr. John (vocals, piano, percussion); Harold Battiste (arranger). Originally released on Atco (33-234). Includes reissue liner notes by Richie Unterberger. New Orleans-born pianist Mac Rebennack had been making a living as a Los Angeles session musician for years before he adopted the persona of Dr. John, a name taken from a 19th-century witch doctor. Under that guise, he crafted a sound that mixed the old world of New Orleans (the tribal rhythms of the Mardi Gras Indians, second-line grooves, swamp blues) with the new musical world of 1968 (funk, R&B, rock, free jazz). The resulting gumbo bears a deep, dark, mysterious flavor full of voodoo mysticism and ancient rites. GRIS-GRIS would have made the perfect soundtrack for a horror movie set in New Orleans, as Dr. John's raspy murmur weaves a hypnotic spell atop a bed of exotic-sounding string instruments, ominous keyboards, primal percussion stomps, and spooky background vocal chants. Few could have predicted that this fearsome medicine man would eventually metamorphose into a charming, accessible rock star. SKU: 1011744

Prince Charming [Remastered]
Adam & The Ants: Adam Ant, Maco Pirroni (vocals, guitar); Kevin Mooney (bass); Merrick, Terry Lee Miall (drums). Adam and the Ants' kitschy mix of Indian imagery, pirate costumes, African drums, and a '50s style guitar twang made them one of the more colorful groups of the early '80s British new wave scene. Excepting guitarist Marco Pirroni however, the band was really a backdrop for Adam Ant himself. The band's second effort, PRINCE CHARMING, found the band expanding a bit from its Duane Eddy meets Tarzan approach with the addition of horns. There is thankfully less shameless self-promoting here (although "Ant Rap" is a serious low point). On the upside, "Prince Charming" and "Stand and Deliver" are among the finest moments in the Ants' catalogue. The former is a heartfelt ditty of self-affirmation in which the frequent ascending key changes add a nice touch. The latter is a galloping testament of what can happen when the Ants' weird assortment of influences gels into a cohesive picture. Reverb guitar lines, rolling tom-toms, and dashing outlaws inject the song with enough life that by the timethe doo-wop style background vocals kick in, its an intoxicating kitchen sink affair. Boys And Girls
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals); Alfa Anderson, John Carin, Michelle Cobbs, Rhett Davies, Yannick Etienne, Colleen Fitz-Charles, Guy Fletcher, David Gilmour, Omar Hakim, Virginia Hewes, Ednah Holt, Neil Hubbard, Neil Jason, Chester Kamen, Mark Knopfler, Tony Levin, Jimmy Maelen, Martin McCarrick, Marcus Miller, Andy Newmark, Nile Rodgers, David Sanborn, Keith Scott, Alan Spenner, Anne Stephenson, Fonzi Thornton, Ruby Turner. Engineers include: Rhett Davies, Bob Clearmountain, Neil Dorfsman. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so. Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden,and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo reggae. Overlaid with skittish percussion and guitars, BOYS AND GIRLS is the aural equivalent of a white dinner jacket and a half-empty bottle of champagne. SKU: 1025415

Recently
Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Fred Tackett, Paul Jackson, Jr., Caleb Quaye (guitar); Laythan Armor, John Hobbs, Cesar Cancino (bass); Abraham Laboriel (bass); John Robinson, Alex Acuna (drums, percussion). On 1988's RECENTLY, Baez performs a mixture of songs, in a variety of musical settings. From Mark Knopfler's "Brothers in Arms," to Peter Gabriel's "Biko," to her own compositions, she combines her usual folk sensibilities with pop music and, unsurprisingly, political protest. RECENTLY is a rich and eclectic collection of songs. Baez's voice is glorious and chilling, warm and at times hauntingly distant. For lovers of '60s folk, her sound is a symbol of soulful beauty, and not much has changed here to diminish that. She speaks out against apartheid, and more specifically, about the tragic death of many prisoners of conscience. "Asimbonanga" finds Baez singing about the South African activist, Steven Biko, crooning,"Steven Biko/We haven't seen/We haven't seen our brother/Where he is/Where he died." On Peter Gabriel's "Biko," her reading of the line, "When I try to sleep at night/I can only dream in red..." is transfixing. A compelling album throughout, RECENTLY merges Joan Baez's outspoken ideology with her folksy roots. SKU: 1014851

Cool
Personnel: Bob James (keyboards); Earl Klugh (guitar, programming); Paul Pesco (guitar); Ron Carter, Gary King (bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Leonard "Doc" Gibbs (percussion); Max Risenhoover, Michael Colina (programming). Recorded at Soundtrack Recording Studios, New York, New York. Bob James' outing with guitarist Earl Klugh takes the listener on an extremely relaxing journey on this 1992 release. James' soft-edged keyboards blend effortlessly with Klugh's acoustic guitar, while Harvey Mason maintains steady, soft percussion inthe background, and bassist Gary King jams gently along. A true collaborative effort, all but two of the 12 tracks were composed by either James or Klugh, and they accompany one another throughout the recording. There are some top-notch arrangements, including Klugh's "The Sponge," "New York Samba," and James' "The Night That Love Came Back," which many listeners will find the perfect romantic backdrop. Laugh I Nearly Bought One
Killing Joke: Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Geordie (guitar); Youth, Raven (bass); Big Paul Ferguson, Martin Atkins (drums). Additional producers: Conny Plank, Chris Himsey, Killing Joke. Spanning the first 13 years of Killing Joke's recording history, LAUGH documents the evolution of an enigmatic band that has always challenged its own musical identity. Opening with "Turn toRed," an early effort at dub, the album highlights the numerous changes that Killing Joke subjected itself to over the years. Also present is "Eighties," a catchy New Wave rocker that won the band a temporary mainstream spotlight with its inclusion in the DOCTOR DETROIT soundtrack. The later cuts find Killing Joke experimenting more with tape loops and synthesizers than before, and Jaz Coleman's voice is less gravelly than in its 1980s incarnation, yet the band retains a certain hard edge. LAUGH provides an excellent sampling of one of the '80s' most uncompromising bands. SKU: 1036602

Day, The [SACD]
This is an enhanced CD which contains multimedia computer files as well as regular audio tracks. Personnel includes: Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, programming); Stevie Wonder (vocals, harmonica); LL Cool J (rap vocals); Eric Clapton (guitar); Ray Brown, Oscar Brashear (trumpet); Reggie Young (trombone); Gerald Albright (tenor saxophone); Kenny G (saxophone); Greg Phillinganes (piano); Sheila E. (percussion); Bryce Wilson (programming); Mariah Carey, Jody Watley, Marc Nelson, De De O'Neal, Shanice Wilson, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, Kenny Terry, Howard Hewett (background vocals). Producer: Babyface. Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Recorded at the Tracken Place, Beverly Hills, California and The Record Plant, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by J.R. Reynolds. Digitally remastered by Joseph Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). THE DAY was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. "Every Time I Close My Eyes" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "How Come, How Long" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Equally talented as a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and guitarist, Babyface has done more than anyone to shape the face of modern R&B, writing and producing for a variety of artists and inspiring a league of imitators who pale in comparison to the original. On THE DAY, his first solo album since 1993's FOR THE COOLIN YOU, he makes it plain that there ain't nothing like the real thing. Babyface is capable of conjuring many moods, but his forte is the slow, sensual ballad. On the opening "Everytime I Close My Eyes," he envelops the listener in a slinky, simmering world where an undertow of subtle drum loops and mellow synthesizer washes pulls you down into the heart of the song. ("Everytime" features pop-jazz saxophonist Kenny G, who released the song simultaneously on his album THE MOMENT). While much of THE DAY is preoccupied with the eternal pop topic of romance, Babyface shifts gears on "Simple Days," a reflective tune that finds him recalling his poor-but-happy childhood with a wistful longing. LL Cool J and Jody Watley guest on the closing tour de force, "This Is For The Lover In You." SKU: 1075142

Search For The New Land
Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Grant Green (guitar); Reginald Workman (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15, 1964. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. This release is something of adeparture for the bold trumpet stylist. After the Latin-tinged dance-floor jams of THE SIDEWINDER (released about six months prior to this disc), Morgan turns somewhat reflective. The music is quieter, with a good deal of structural space and restrained, almost expressionistic playing. The title track opens the album and evokes a mood of poignancy and careful balance, like a Japanese painting. Even the more up-tempo numbers like "The Joker" and "Mr. Kenyatta" are relaxed and thoughtful, the richly textured passages unfolding in a way that seems both organic and tightly disciplined. Morgan's playing maintains its articulate brightness, but his notes and phrases are carefully shaded. This is matched by Wayne Shorter's sax work (also simultaneously edgy and lyrical), Grant Green's glowing guitar and Herbie Hancock's atmospheric contributions. Lee should also be recognized as a significant composer, since all the tracks here, with their floating themes and protean solo sections, are from his pen. SEARCH FOR THE NEW LAND live up to its title, finding a high ground of intelligent, evocative work and outstanding playing. SKU: 5086757

Faith And Courage
Personnel: Sinead O'Connor (vocals); Bongo I Abinghi Noah (spoken vocals, percussion); Ghetto Priest, Junior Delgado (spoken vocals); Skip McDonals (guitar, bass, keyboards); Rusty Anderson, Scott Cutler, Dave Stewart, Derek Scott, Justin Adams (guitar); Joel Derouin (violin); David Campbell (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Kiernan Kiely (whistle); Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilive (piano, bass); Brian Eno (piano); Adrian "Professor Stretch" Shortman (keyboards, programming); Zak Rae, Dave Levitta (keyboards); CarolineDale (string synthesizer); Paul Bushnell, Jah Wobble, Chucho Merchan, (bass); Lil John, Scot Coogan, John Reynolds, Chris Sharrock (drums); Reese Gilmore, Alan Branch, Simon Mundey, Jeff Turzo, Andy Wright, Mark Price, Steve McClaughlin (programming). Producers: Brian Eno, Wyclef Jean, Adrian Sherwood, Skip McDonald, Dave Stewart. Engineers: Alan Branch, Nick Addison, Darin Prindle. After spending most of the late '90s out of the spotlight (save for 1997's GOSPEL OAK EP), Sinead O'Connor's reemergence in 2000 on a new label coincides with the introspective nature of FAITH AND COURAGE, representing a new musical start for her. The wide array of producers here results in an ethereal mix of hip-hop beats, Celtic nuances and electronic shadings. FAITH represents O'Connor opening the door on her private life. The most biographical tracks are the anthemic "No Man's Woman," the Dave Stewart-produced "Jealous" and "Daddy I'm Fine." Elsewhere, O'Connor's love of contemporary R&B finds her combining ghetto-fabulous reggae beats (overseen by Destiny's Child producer Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs) and Irish pennywhistle on "The Lamb's Book of Life," a plea for religious tolerance. Producer Wyclef Jean also contributes his two cents on the gentle soul of "Dancing Lessons," recruiting sister Blandinna Melky Jean to contribute vocals. O'Connor's pride in motherhood is displayed on "Emma's Song," a gorgeous ode to her daughter featuring Brian Eno's delicate piano playing. Wrapping things up is an ambient arrangement of the traditional "Kyrie Eleison" with a Rastafarian edge supplied by reggae legends Junior Delgado and Bim Sherman. SKU: 1034057

Antenna
ZZ Top: Billy F. Gibbons (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums, percussion). Recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includesliner notes by Jim Bessman. ZZ Top continued on in its self-described "return-to-basics" approach on its 1994 release, ANTENNA. While the production remains much more polished when compared to the sound of the early albums it was trying to recapture (RIO GRANDE MUD, TRES HOMBRES, FANDANGO!, etc.), there's still plenty here to satisfy most ZZ Top fans. On such tracks as the album opening rocker "Pincushion," the down-and-dirty "Fuzzbox Voodoo," and the crawling blues of "Cover Your Rig," the trio sounds like it's still having fun some 20-odd years after first crashing the scene. ANTENNA proved to any doubters that ZZ Top still had plenty of gas left in its tank. SKU: 5048985

Blow By Blow [Remastered]
Also available with WIRED and THERE AND BACK in a CD 3-pack. Personnel: Jeff Beck (guitar); Max Middleton (keyboards); Phil Chenn (bass); Richard Bailey (drums, percussion). Recorded at AIR Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Realizing the overwhelming response he received in concert with his extended instrumental breaks, Beck finally bit the bullet and released his first all-instrumental work in 1975. The jazz-rock tour de force BLOW BY BLOW was produced by Beatles mainman George Martin and proved that Beck's six-string skills could easily carry an album. Completely inspired by the challenge and surrounded by a stellar band and solid compositions, Beck lets loose throughout. The result is one of his verybest works. Highlights include the funky opening track "You Know What I Mean," a pair of Stevie Wonder-penned tracks ("Cause We've Ended as Lovers" and "Thelonious"), and the classic rock-radio staple "Freeway Jam."
