Meddle
Pink Floyd: Dave Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Rick Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (percussion). Engineers include: Peter Brown, John Leckie, Rob Black. Recorded at Air, EMI, Abbey Road, and Morgan Studios, London, England in 1971. All tracks have been digitally remastered. MEDDLE was the first album to truly represent what Pink Floyd evolved into after David Gilmour's arrival. The albums that immediately followed PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN either retained traces of Gilmour's predecessor, Syd Barrett (SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS), were soundtracks (MORE), paired live tracks with solo experiments (UMMAGUMMA), or were collaborations with outside parties (ATOM HEART MOTHER). Whereas any of them might have had traditional song structures dropped in at random, MEDDLE represents Pink Floyd attempting to approach a sequence of them. "Echoes,"an ambitious 23-minute soundscape, harkened back to Floyd's earlier exuberances. Its length enabled former architecture students Roger Waters and Nick Mason to patch together Gilmour and Richard Wright's fragmented musical ideas into a piece soaked in aquatic and lunar imagery. The pinging of a module greets the listener before Gilmour's warm, open guitar and gentle crooning gives way to a middle section that devolves into a repetitious, workmanlike rhythm. From here, the music fades into an abyss of whale calls and eerie sonic reverberations that slowly return to the opening section; it closes with the sound of howling wind. Spooky! Elsewhere, Floyd dabble with straightforward cocktail-hour jazz ("San Tropez") and a twisted slow blues ("Seamus"). But it was "One Of These Days," MEDDLE's opening track and lone radio staple, that hinted at the direction the band was headed. Waters' bass, played through a Binson echo unit, establishes the song's manically hypnotic groove, as Wright's synthesizer bursts in and out, Mason's off-kilter drum fills get tossed about, and Gilmour's guitar dive-bombs through it all. These varied sound effects, packaged in a song that clocked in at less than six minutes, were a precedent for the masterpiece that was two years away: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. SKU: 1002184

Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrard, Brendan Perry (vocals, various instruments). WITHIN THE REALM OF A DYING SUN sees Dead Can Dance utilizing both string and brass instruments more than they had previously, which gives the music an organic feel. Though some synthesized effects are still present, the floating, ethereal effect that the tracks inspire is based almost entirely on the cavernous echoes that DCD incorporates into its music and on the vocals of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, who sings four songs to Perry's three (the other is a short instrumental). On "Xavier," Perry's voice rises and falls amid a forest of strings, augmented byan occasional, distant trumpet. "Dawn of the Iconoclast" opens with a series of triumphal blasts and spare drum rolls, and soon settles into a sustained chord over which Lisa Gerrard's voice (tracked at least three times) weaves back and forth, before eventually ending on a swelling synthesized note. "Cantara" is arguably the best track here--built over a repeated hurdy-gurdy riff, at nearly the two-minute mark it introduces a percussive rhythm over which Gerrard intones what seem to be nonsense syllables--the whole thing comes out suggesting a village dance from the time of King Arthur and company. Sheryl Crow And Friends Live From Central Park
Personnel: Sheryl Crow (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, bass); Chrissie Hynde, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Stevie Nicks (vocals, tambourine); Sarah McLachlan (vocals); Peter Stroud (acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Mary Rowell (acoustic guitar, violin); Tim Smith (electric guitar, bass, background vocals); Matt Brubeck (cello, bass); Mike Rowe (keyboards); Jim Bogios (drums, background vocals); Ash Sood (tambourine, percussion); Bill Murray. The Dixie Chicks: Natalie Maines (vocals); Emily Robinson (slide guitar, banjo, background vocals); Martie Seidel (fiddle, background vocals). Recorded live in Central Park, New York, New York. "There Goes The Neighborhood" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. "The Difficult Kind" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "Strong Enough" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. SherylCrow's musical career thus far is not unlike a Cinderella story. From humble beginnings as a ghost writer and as a recording/touring background vocalist for artists from Sting to Michael Jackson, the Kennett, Missouri native now commands the respect of the popular music community. To that end, she enlisted some heavy hitters for her concert held in Central Park. Sheryl wastes no time capturing the audience in her spell, not letting the day's rain dampen the spirit of the event. The Dixie Chicks bring their vocals and fiddle playing to a countryfied "Strong Enough.," showing just how seamlessly rock and country overlap. "Gold Dust Woman" features the legendary Stevie Nicks. It's fittingly ironic that as a child, Sheryl would listen to Fleetwood Mac and pretend to be part of the band. The old and new schools of female-fronted rock collide as Chrissie Hynde shares the lead vocal chores on a powerful version of "If It Makes You Happy." Surely, the evening's centerpoint is her duet with Eric Clapton on "White Room." Sheryl handles Jack Bruce's vocal parts masterfully. The night's crescendo ending has all her musical guests joining her for Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues." SKU: 1025522

Best Of Van Morrison Vol.2, The
Producers: Van Morrison, Paddy Moloney, Tommy Scott. When it comes to best-ofs with an artist like Van Morrison, it's hard to stop at one, so thankfully Polydor didn't. His big radiohits and pop-rock-oriented "accesible" material were featured on the first volume, so here we get to venture a little further into the mystic with the Celtic blues prophet. What comes across on this collection, which centers on the second half of Morrison's career, is his staunch individualism. As evidenced by spiritually-flavored cuts like "In the Garden," "The Mystery" and "Hymns to the Silence," when a particular philosphical/musical notion strikes Morrison he follows it to the end, heedless of the way he bends traditional song structures. It's this devotion to the muse that makes Morrison such a vital artist. Morrison couldn't abandon melodicism if his life depended on it, though, so there are also overwhelmingly infectious tunes like "When Will I Ever Learn To Live In God," the simple, moving "One Irish Rover" and the rocking "Real Real Gone." Personnel: Kelly Price (vocals); Method Man (rap vocals); R. Allen, J. Moss (keyboards, drums); Lafayette Carthon II, Anthony Lowe (keyboards); Doug Sommer (acoustic bass); Steve Williams (bass); Mike Cebulski (kettle drum, percussion). Producers: Warryn "Baby Dub" Campbell, R. Kelly, Shep Crawford, Kelly Price, Peter Mokran. Engineers: Jan Fairchild, Paul Davis, Ann Catalino. "As We Lay" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Kelly Price's sophomore release is both tough and sweet, reflecting what she's gone on record as describing as a tough period in her life. The sophisticated rhythms, arrangements, and production on display belie some harsh subject matter, all centering on love, loss, betrayal, and leaving. It's hard to believe that Price didn't write songs such as "At Least (The Little Things)" herself; she inhabits them completely, in the same way that Aretha Franklin possesses a song such as "Dr. Feelgood," or "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)." Before long you're totally caught up in her life. "She Wants You" is a song of resignation and defeat preceded by a "National Anthem" thathumorously itemizes her man's transgressions. Throughout, Price never lets her obvious technical prowess intrude on her interpretation of the songs; the result is, paradoxically, a hugely enjoyable album about heartbreak. SKU: 1037542

CYMBALS: Personnel: Sun Ra (electric vibraphone, organ, rocksichord); Danny Davis (alto saxophone); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone); Akh Tal Ebah (trumpet); Elmoe Omoe (bass clarinet); Ronnie Boykins (bass); Harry Richards (drums); Derek Morris (congas). Recorded at Variety Recording Studios, New York, New York in 1973. Originally planned for release on Impulse (9296). CRYSTAL SPEARS: Personnel: Sun Ra (electric vibraphone, marimba, organ, rocksichord, Mini-Moog synthesizer, gong); Marshall Allen (alto saxophone, piccolo, flute, oboe); Danny Davis (alto saxophone, flute, percussion); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone); Danny Ray Thompson (baritone saxophone, bongos); Akh Tal Ebah, Kwame Hadi (trumpet, percussion); Eloe Omoe (bass clarinet, percussion); Clifford Jarvis (drums); Atakatune, Odun (congas); Eugene Brennan (percussion). Recorded at Variety Recording Studios, New York, New York in 1973. Originally planned for release on Impulse (9297). CYMBALS and CRYSTAL SPEARS, the two albums that comprise this two-disc set, were recorded in 1973 but remained unissued for 27 years. At the time they were prepared for release, Sun Ra had a deal with Impulse, a label known for reissuing rare titles and occasional new works. The deal fell apart before it was completed, leaving these two recordings in the lurch. CYMBALS, a vibrant session, features a smaller version of the full-scale Arkestra. Bassist Ronnie Boykins gorgeously propels the music. Other highlights include John Gilmore's appearance on "Thoughts Under A Dark Blue Light"; his solo is dazzlingly iconoclastic. Sun Ra's electric keyboards are inventive throughout, particularly the "electronic vibes" on "The Order Of The Pharaonic Jesters." CRYSTAL SPEARS boasts a larger line-up and a fantastic opening as Ra elicits otherworldly beauty from his Minimoog synthesizer on the title track. From there he draws upon post-bop grooves and melodic lines for "The Eternal Sphynx" and mysterious sonic landscapes for "The Embassy Of the Living God" and "Sunrise In the Western Sky." SKU: 1044944

Big City Blues
The 2002 edition of BIG CITY BLUES includes 7 bonus tracks. Personnel: John Hammond (vocals, electric guitar, harmonica); Billy Butler, James Spruill (electric guitar); Jimmy Lewis (electric bass); Bobby Donaldson (drums). Includes liner notes by S.W. Bennett. John Hammond's second album of stripped down, raw, urban R&B is aproduct of its time. Released in 1964 on the crest of the R&B explosion, it delivers the goods in the form of authentic musicianship, enthusiastic vocalizing, and excellent choices of material, from Leroy Carr's haunting "Midnight Hour Blues," to Willie Dixon's steady-rolling "I Live the Life I Love." Hammond's sincerity and love for the blues shines through on every track here, and it's to his credit that the performances still sound ground-breaking, exciting, and energetic today, avoiding any hint of pedantry or fakery. Hammond and company play throughout as if to the manner born (which, as the son of John Hammond Sr., discoverer of Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and countless others, Hammond arguably was). SKU: 1004193

Ljubljana Zagreb Beograd
LJUBLJANA-ZAGREB-BEGRAD is a mostly live document of Laibach's first tour in 1982. Theband was formed in Ljubljana, the capitol of what is now Slovenia, and this tour featured shows in the three titular Yugoslavian cities. Given Laibach's penchant for mocking political institutions--occasionally going so far as to perform in fascistic regalia--It should come as no surprise that government interference plagued the tour. From the opening, Laibach demands acknowledgement that something larger than just music is going on here. The lyrics of "Svoboda" conclude with "The authority has / in the year 1982 / cancelled / freedom." At this early stage, Laibach's music featured heavily distorted bass guitar, very loud primitive synthesizers designed to deliver jolts of phased feedback and screeches, martial drumming, and the speech-like pronouncements of Thomaz Hostnik. "Unsere Geschichte," a scratchy recording of a '40s-style easy-listening record, merges into the ear-splitting feedback twitter of "Rdeci Molk." Laibach's odd, occasionally hyperactive take on the industrial sound pioneered by the like-minded Throbbing Gristle is not for the faint of heart. SKU: 1008005

Ultimate Dolly Parton
Personnel includes: Dolly Parton (vocals, guitar); Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Kenny Rogers, Porter Wagoner (vocals). Producers include: Dolly Parton, Bob Ferguson, Gary Klein, Ricky Skaggs, Gregg Perry. Compilation producer: Al Quaglieri. Recorded between 1970 & 1988. Includes liner notes by Holly George-Warren. Includes liner notes by Holly George-Warren. Though various record labels have released several dozen Dolly Parton greatest-hits and "best of" compilations over the years, few have attempted to effectively encapsulate the artist's enviably long and incredibly varied career in a single disc. THE ULTIMATE DOLLY PARTON goes a long way towards filling this void by collecting choice cuts from nearly every era and musical phase of Dolly's tenure. Beginning with stone-cold country classics like "Coat Of Many Colors" and "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" and proceeding through crossover smashes such as "9 To 5" and "Islands In The Stream," the collection will give the uninitiated more than enough prime Parton to dispel any inkling that the singer is all flash. On the contrary, her uncanny pop sensibility, heartstring-pulling, warbling soprano, and emotional directness are apparent in every single note on this disc, and anyone curious about why Dolly Parton is a cultural icon of the highest orderwould do well to start here. 6 And 12 String Guitar
Solo performer: Leo Kottke (acoustic 6 & 12-string guitars). Recorded in 1969. Originally released on Takoma (1024). Includes liner notes by MarkHumphrey and original release liner notes by Leo Kottke. With the 1969 release of 6-AND 12 STRING GUITAR, Leo Kottke established his pre-eminence as a guitar virtuoso and composer of quirky, pop-inflected pieces. Harmonically adventurous and technically dazzling, this album showcases Kottke's penchant for infusing traditional elements of folk guitar with more modern, even impressionistic harmony and tonality. Kottke inspired a revolution in acoustic guitar playing, and this record provided the opening volley. "The Driving of the Year Nail" starts things off with a relentless fingerpicked chug, featuring splashes of open harmonics executed with the delicacy of a ballerina. Kottke proceeds to combine the familiar with the strange--each of these brief pieces (around three minutes and under) has the effect of being simultaneously charming, and a little twisted. For example, "Vaseline Machine Gun" starts with "Taps" played with a bottleneck slide, then morphs into a thumb-and-slide frenzy. Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is the exception, given a straight and loving reading on six-string guitar. This is pure steel-string joy, with liberal doses of irony and ecstasy. SKU: 1007368

Hearing Voices
Personnel includes: Will Ackerman (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Samite, Heather Rankin, Noah Chase, Betty McLeod, Jaya Lakshmi, Curtis King, Happy Rhodes (vocals); Marc Shulman (electric guitar); Nick Berry (guitar, background vocals); Charlie Bisharat (violin); Phil Aaberg (piano, keyboards); T-Bone Wolk (bass); E. Shankar (tabla); Derrik Jordan, Tom Parker, Bob Muller (percussion). Engineers include: Gary Henry, Corin Nelsen, Bryan Carrigan. Recorded at Imaginary Road, Windham County, Vermont; Q Division, Somerville, Massachusetts; Sparks, Emeryville, California; Coupe, Boulder, Colorado; Nevessa Studios, Woodstock, New York. Includes liner notes by Will Ackerman. HEARING VOICES was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. With HEARING VOICES, released 25 years after IN SEARCH OF THE TURTLE'S NAVEL, William Ackerman finally recorded an album with vocal accompaniments (he had previously recorded a single track with vocals on 1998's SOUND OF WIND DRIVEN RAIN). The vocal variety here is ambitious: a slew of performers sing in Gaelic, Arabic, Luganda, Hebrew, Italian, Hindi, and English. But more often than not, the voices operate as additional instruments, and the words act as ethereal sounds that enhance the sparseness of Ackerman's guitar, rather than distracting with their meanings. On two duets with Jaya Lakshmi, "Briars Above the Well" and "As Stars Fell," her Hindi and Sanskrit vocalsare rendered in a down-home, country girl meter, blurring genres in a most enchanting fashion. Snowfall (The Tony Bennett Christmas Album)
Personnel includes: Tony Bennett (vocals); Barry Galbraith (guitar); David Nadian, La Mar Alsop, Fred Buldrini, Harry Glickman, Harold Kohon, Charles Libove, Harry Lookofsky, Carmel Malin, John Pintavalle, Max Pollikoff, Aaron Rosand, Mathew Raimondi, Julius Schacter, Gerald Tarack (violin); Milt Hinton, Jack Lesberg (bass violin); Alfred Brown, Harold Coletta, David Schwartz, Emanuel Vardi (viola); Seymour Barab, Lucian Schmit, Anthony Sophos, Nathan Stutch (cello); Gloria Agostini (harp). We can hear you kvetching already; "How many Christmas albums do I need? If you've heard one version of 'Winter Wonderland' you've heard them all." Well, you obviously haven't heard SNOWFALL. Understand this: Tony Bennett is the premier post-Sinatra interpreter of American popular song. The man couldn't turn in a bad performance if his life depended on it. So no matter how many times you've heard tunes like "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," you can be sure that whenTony tackles them, he's bringing something new to the table. He swings "My Favorite Things" like no one since Coltrane (and Coltrane didn't sing). Backed by a full orchestra, he brings his grainy intimacy to bear on the perennial "White Christmas," investing the Irving Berlin evergreen (sorry) with such tangible emotion, you'll be reaching for the tinsel in July. His Band & Street Choir
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica, tenor saxophone); John Platania (guitar, mandolin); Dahaud Elias Shaar (bass clarinet, drums, percussion, background vocals); Jack Schroer (alto, baritone & soprano saxophones, piano); Keith Johnson (trumpet, organ); Alan Hand (piano, organ); John Klingberg (bass); Emily Houston, Judy Clay, Jackie Verdell (background vocals). The Street Choir: Ellen Schroer, Martha Velez, Janet Planet, David Shaw, Andy Robinson, Larry Goldsmith. Includes liner notes by Janet Planet. The dark night of the soul that began with T.B. SHEETS and culminated in ASTRAL WEEKS found its counterpart in Morrison's next two albums, the seminal MOONDANCE and it's subsequent sister, HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR. Both released in 1970, these latter two albums defined the folk/soul/blues amalgam that would prove to be the foundation of Morrison's music. A look inside reveals Van as country gentleman, looking at home and (dare we say it) happy in numerous photos. This image is furthered by his then-wife Janet Planet's (hey, it was 1970) hippie-dippy liner notes, which paint a simpering but accurate picture of Van as a man reborn. The music more than bears this out. The tunes here are among the most soulful in Morrison's repertoire. The classic opener "Domino" finds him wailing over a punchy horn section and insistent, percolating rhythms, setting the tone for the rest of the album. Van rocks his way through the R&B-inflected "Blue Money," gets down on the funk workout "I've Been Working" and waxes lyrical on "If I Ever Needed Someone," which seems to be both a Gospel song and love ballad simultaneously.HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR is perhaps Morrison's most open, exuberant recording. Tortoise
Tortoise: Dan Bitney, John Herndon, John McEntire, Douglas McCombs, Bundy K. Brown. Recorded at Idful Music Corporation, Chicago, Illinois, from November 29 to December 5, 1993. Unless you go back to their '70s influences (everything from dub to fusion to Eno), very little prefigured the arrival of Chicago's Tortoise. They helped create and virtually define what became known as post-rock, venturing beyond pop/rock song-structure and forsaking lyrics altogether in search of a newer, more expansive style. Thisself-titled debut finds the band embryonic but undeniably accomplished. The dub influence on Tortoise's largely rhythm-based tracks is at its strongest here, and the interplay of bass, drums, percussion and marimba forms the nucleus of the sound. The Steve Reich and Ennio Morricone-influenced modes the band would later explore are faintly suggested. Instead, the aesthetic balances a spacey propulsiveness with an inexplicable density in a combination that marks TORTOISE as the band's most urgent document. SKU: 1071702

Mysterious Traveller [Remastered]
Weather Report: Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenorsaxophones); Joe Zawinul (Fender Rhodes, piano, synthesizer); Alphonso Johnson (electric bass); Ishmael Wilburn (drums); Dom Um Romao (percussion). Additional personnel: Miroslav Vitous (acoustic bass); Eric Gravatt (drums). Recorded at Devonshire Sound, North Hollywood, California between February and March 1974. Includes liner notes by Hal Miller. One of Weather Report's most varied and exciting records, overflowing with daring keyboard chops, saucy, multi-ethnic rhythms, molten-hot textures and boundless energy. By this point, Zawinul was becoming the elder statesman of fusion, his mastery of his synth arsenal unparalleled by anyone save Chick Corea. But where Corea opted for the far reaches of Hubbard space, Zawinul rooted himself in virtual rainforests, where teeming exotic aggregates of organic life possessed their own unique grooves. On "Nubian Sundance," Zawinul's keyboards cut colorful swathes through dense jungle funk bottomed out by Ishmael Wilburn's drums and Miroslav Vitous' serpentine basslines. MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER also sports the Weather Report standard "Cucumber Slumber," rippling curbside funk that finds Shorter waxing rhapsodically over Alphonso Johnson's booty-quiverin' bottom end. Superfine struts from the sultans of fusion swing. SKU: 1073324

Evolution (Mono/Stereo)
This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks. The Hollies: Bernie Calvert, Bobbie Elliot, Graham Nash, Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks. Originally released on Epic (26315). Includes liner notes by Jud Cost. Digitally remastered by Bob Irwin (Sundazed Studios, Coxsackie, New York). One couldn't ask for a more appropriate album title. 1967's EVOLUTION is the link between the Hollies' mid-'60s Beatlesque pop/"Bus Stop" sound and the full blown psychedelic glory of BUTTERFLY. The album's biggest hit "Carrie-Anne," despite its slight Caribbean lilt, is the strongest tie to the pure pop of the band's past. Meanwhile, the quaint, harpsichord-based "Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe" is about as baroque as baroque-pop gets, complete with sprightly flute counterpoint. "Then The Heartaches Begin" and "Heading For A Fall" stretch out into Move territory with their driving psychedelic rock feel, while "You NeedLove"'s chiming guitars and harmonies recall the folk-rock of the Byrds. The vocal harmonies provide the unifying element here. As on the group's early albums, the collective approach to creativity is perfectly manifested by the consistent substitution of harmonies for solo lead vocals. SKU: 1062524
