Contains 8 tracks. With critical darlings Sigur Ros releasing an album called ( ) that features eight untitled songs, this Icelandic outfit continues to go against the grain in a manner so esoteric that it's easy to imagine the band's oft-cited influence on Radiohead. Ironically, the vocals here depart from the previous albums' Robert Smith-like tones for a sound highly reminiscent of Radiohead's Thom Yorke. Perhaps SR is just returning the favor. In any case, most of these songs clocking in at over ten minutes, and the oddness quotient goes up considerably when you hear frontman Jonsi Birgisson singing in a fusion of Icelandic and a made-up language called Hopelandic. Infused with a melancholy mood wrapped around swirling, ambient keyboards and floating guitar chords, the dynamics become the bellwether of this musical exercise. Withthis kind of purposefully funereal pacing, listeners will either be praising this album as another example of Sigur Ros's innovation or attempting to rise from catnaps to declare that the emperor has no clothes. Out Of Order
Personnel includes: Rod Stewart (vocals); Andy Taylor, Jim Cregan, Michael Landau (guitar); David Lindley (mandolin); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Billy Payne (piano); Kevin Savigar (keyboards); Bob Glaub, Bernard Edwards (bass); Tony Thompson (drums); Bobbye Hall (percussion). Producers: Andy Taylor, Bernard Edwards, Rod Stewart. Recorded at Record Plant Studios, and Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California. OUT OF ORDER not only marked Rod Stewart's collaboration with half of Power Station (Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor and Chic bassist Bernard Edwards), but also the bawdy Scot's return to a slightly more organic sound after drowning his previous record CAMOUFLAGE in synthesizers. Enlisting multi-instrumentalist David Lindley meant the return of the trademark mandolin associated with Stewart's sound, on songs such as "Lost In You" and "Forever Young" (both of which were the onlyTop 20 hits on this album). Teeny-bopper reputation aside, Taylor's guitar playing provides a worthy foil for Stewart on the punchy "Dynamite" and the sanctified build-up on which "The Wild Horse" eventually rides out. Being an '80s album, some slick production does come up particularly on an unrecognizable reading of the old chestnut "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and a strings-caressed version of "Try A Little Tenderness." Celtic Harp, The (A Tribute To Edward Bunting)
The Chieftains: Kevin Conneff (vocals, bodhran); Martin Fay, Sean Keane (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, tiompan, harpsichord); Matt Molloy (flute); Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipes, tin whistle). Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland on August 25, 1992; UMRK, Los Angeles, California on June 24, 1992; live at The National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland on May 23, 1992; live at The Barbican Hall, London, England on August 1, 1992. Includes liner notes by Paddy Moloney. THE CELTIC HARP won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Traditional Folk Album." In 1792, Edward Bunting brought together ten of the foremost Irish harpers for a harp festival in Belfast, Ireland. It was during this period that Bunting collected and catalogued all of the available harp music of the day, which he subsequently published in books until well after 1800. Two-hundred years after this festival, the Chieftains resurrected much of this beautiful, but largely obscure music, in concert with theBelfast Harp Orchestra. This CD contains both live tracks from the two concerts the Chieftains performed with The Belfast Harp Orchestra, as well as selections recorded later in Dublin and in Los Angeles at Frank Zappa's personal recording studio. Standout tracks include "MacAllistrum's March-Mairseail Alasdroim" and "The Green Fields of America." The former reflects the rich cross-fertilization between Irish and Scottish harpers and pipers. The latter is a more common tune, and the theme, not surprisingly is centered around Irish emigration to the United States. SKU: 3109172

Chieftains Vol.8 [Remastered]
The Chieftains include: Martin Fay, Sean Kean (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, tiompan); Michael Tubridy (flute, whistle, concertina); Paddy Moloney (whistle, Uilleann pipes); Sean Potts (whistle); Kevin Conneff (bodhran). Producer: Paddy Moloney. Reissue producer: Lawrence Cohn. Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by David McGee. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Legacy's"Sounds Of Ireland" series. The Chieftains are the most famous ambassadors of traditional Irish music. Their popularity continues to climb with every passing year. Moreover, associations with pop musicians such as Sting and Van Morrison have done nothing to discredit the Chieftains as one of Ireland's premier traditional ensembles. On 8, Paddy Maloney and the boys create timeless renditions of jigs, reels, slip-jigs, slow airs, and even a hornpipe (similar to a jig). "Dr. John Hart," a piece by the great Gaelic composer Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), showcases the beautiful and lush medieval-harp playing of Derek Bell. "The Session" is a lively medley including the slip-jig (named for its time signature) "Elizabeth Kelly's Delight" and the joyous romp "Dinny Delaney's." Finally, stalwart reel "If I Had Maggie in the Wood" shows off Kevin Conniffe's bodhran (goatskin frame drum) and bones (percussion instrument that sounds similar to the spoons). An exciting and authentic journey through Ireland's rich musical past, 8 is indeed a classic. SKU: 1071844

When I Was Cruel (Collectors Edition)
Personnel includes: Elvis Costello (vocals, arranger, electric guitar, Spanish guitar, harmonica, melodica, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, harmonium, bass, cymbals, loops); Steve Nieve (melodica, piano, Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, vibraphone); Roy Nathanson (alto saxophone); Jay Rodriguez (tenor saxophone); Ku-umba Frank Lacy (trumpet, flugelhorn); Curtis Fowlkes (trombone); Bill Ware (vibraphone); Davey Faragher (bass); Pete Thomas (drums, shaker, tambourine, percussion); Leo Pearson (tabla, programming); Steven Kennedy (background vocals). Producers include: Elvis Costello, Ciarin Cahill, Leo Pearson, Kieran Lynch. Recorded at Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland; Avatar Studios, New York, New York. WHEN I WAS CRUEL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. "45" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Though he was involved in worthy collaborations (Burt Bacharach, Anne Sofie Von Otter in the interim, the notoriously prolific Elvis Costello didn't release a proper solo album between 1996's triumph ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY and this 2002 effort, the longest gap of his career. WHEN I WAS CRUEL is a return to visceral, rock-oriented production and songwriting after the more complex, sophisticated pursuits of his aforementioned collaborative works, and one can feel Costello's joy at getting back to his roots for a while. The maturation of the previous decade isn't invisible here--this is not the sturm und drang of THISYEAR'S MODEL (or even BLOOD & CHOCOLATE), but this as electric-guitar-based as latter-day EC gets, and the likes of "Tear Off Your Own Head" and "Daddy Can I Turn This" are as hard-hitting as anything he's done. Two-thirds of the Attractions (occupying the drum and keyboard stools) are on hand to provide that classic sound, but new arrival Davey Farragher impressively emulates disgruntled bassist Bruce Thomas's McCartney-on-speed licks. Tasteful horns add effective coloring to the quartet sound, and Costello's own tremolo-drenched guitar has never been so prevalent. Despite a couple of long, moody songs (the title track and the closing "Radio Silence"), the overwhelming feeling here is one of unbridled energy of the sort Costello hadn't let out for quite a while. "Every Elvis has his army," sings Mr. Costello on "Episode of Blonde," and it appears that his is well trained enough to mobilize effectively even after long periods of rest. SKU: 1076185

Odetta And The Blues
Personnel: Odetta (vocals); Herb Hall (clarinet); Buck Clayton (trumpet); Vic Dickenson (trombone); Dick Wellstood (piano); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass); "Shep" Shepherd (drums). Recorded at Plaza Sound Studios, New York, April 11-12, 1962. Originally released on Riverside (9417). Includes original liner notes by Ed Michel. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California). Although Odetta's commercial breakthrough came from her affiliation with the collegiate folk revival of the late '50s and early '60s, the singer/guitarist spent the early '50s singing mostly blues in the early Bessie Smith/Ma Rainey style. Knowledge of this earlier period in Odetta's career puts 1962's wonderful ODETTA AND THE BLUES into context: no mere bandwagon-jumper she. Unlike the majority of her folk albums, which feature Odetta, her acoustic guitar and occasionally unobtrusive bass work by Bill Lee, ODETTA AND THE BLUES was recorded with a full band of the mid-'20s style: clarinet, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and drums. The sextet knows their history--a drag like "Hard, Oh Lord" wouldn't have soundedout of place on a Kid Ory 78 in 1925--but aren't mere revivalists, kicking into standards like "Make Me a Pallet on the Floor" with verve and passion. Odetta, as always, sings magnificently. SKU: 1054293

Substance 1987
The 2-LP set of SUBSTANCE, a collection of 12" remixes of New Order's most popular pre-1987 singles, is wholly contained on the first CD. The second CD features the B-sides of these 12" singles (most are unavailable anywhere else), none ofwhich were included on the LP or cassette. New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar); Gillian Gilbert (keyboards, synthesizers); Peter Hook (bass, vocals); Stephen Morris (drums, background vocals). Originally released as a 2-LP set. New Order always shone brightest as a singles band, and this stellar two-disc set collects most of the a- and b-sides from singles released between the band's inception and 1987. "Ceremony," a leftover from the band's past as Joy Division, opens the proceedings. It is followed by 150-odd minutes of material that, through the 1980s, set the standard for dance music. Classics like "Everything's Gone Green," "Perfect Kiss" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" appear next to alternate versions of the stunning "Temptation" and "Confusion." Also included is "True Faith," which, along with "1963," was recorded especially for this collection. Opening the second disc is another Joy Division leftover, "In a Lonely Place," a haunting epitaph for the former band. "Procession," "Mesh" and "Hurt," all great evocations of loss and healing, lead into "The Beach," an instrumental (and far superior) version of the dance classic "Blue Monday." "Murder" is New Order's creepiest moment, with its sampled "I hate them!" from the film "Caligula" and assorted samples of HAL, the computer from the film 2001, descending into insanity. SUBSTANCE is not only the sound of an evolving band, but the sound of an evolving musical style that has influenced countless other artists. SKU: 1002116

Wild Things Run Fast
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, acoustic & electric pianos); Steve Lukather, Larry Carlton, Mike Landau (electric guitar); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Larry Williams (tenor saxophone, synthesizers); Kim Hutchcroft (baritone saxophone); Russell Ferrante (synthesizers); Larry Klein (bass); John Guerin (drums, background vocals); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Victor Feldman (percussion); Lionel Ritchie, James Taylor, Charles Valentino, Howard Kinney, Kenny Rankin, Robert De La Garza, Skip Cottrell (backgroundvocals). Engineers: Skip Cottrell, Jerry Hudgins, Henry Lewy. The Joni Mitchell of the early '80s settled into a mature, adult-contemporary sound that was often a turn-off to her folk/pop following. Many dismissed Mitchell's use of L.A. session musicians and jazz inflections as superficial and flashy. As 1982's WILD THINGS RUN FAST proves, nothing could be further from the truth. Mitchell's compositional skills are as sharp as ever. Her dusky vocals are deftly supported by a group of exceptional players producing a sound that is glossy but full of depth as Mitchell's rich lyrics find a comfortable space in this contemporary setting. The opening "Chinese Cafe" is vintage Joni; a reminiscence of youth through the haunting tones of "Unchained Melody." The driving title track is a refined rocker that Mitchell handles in her signature style. The swinging "Moon At The Window" is a dark blues with guest Wayne Shorter (sax) adding a colorful accompaniment to Mitchell's layered vocals. On a lighter note, the stylized cover of "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" is a nice departures that make this record a treat. The biggest standout has to be "You Dream Flat Tires," a dynamic shuffle with one of the most complex arrangements that Mitchell has ever recorded. SKU: 1019751

Snow Capped Romance, A
Second album from Alaskanmetallers, now relocated to Oregon, follows 2002's 'Bitterness The Star' and is a paean to the frozen beauty of their home state. Produced by emo veteran James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever) and mixed by Andy Sneap (Killswitch Engage, Arch Enemy), the album's hardhitting sound is more consistent and emotional than their debut and looks set to propel them to the front of the burgeoning "screamo" movement. Composer Of Desifinado Plays, The [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Antonio Carlos Jobim (piano, guitar); Claus Ogerman (arranger); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Leo Wright (flute); George Duvivier (bass). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Michael Lang. Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York, on May 9 and 10, 1962. Includes liner notes by Dom Cerulli, Johnny Mandel and Bob Belden. Digitally remastered by Chris Herles (Polygram). This is part of the Verve Master Editions series. This disc offers instrumental interpretations of some of Jobim's most famous compositions fromthe salad days of the early '60s Bossa Nova craze. It's also one of the earliest examples of Jobim's long-standing and fruitful collaboration with arranger Claus Ogerman. Trademarks like Jobim's single-note piano style, the accompanying flute melodies and Ogerman's arranging techniques (unison string parts, the bass clarinet underpinnings in "How Insensitive") would decorate Jobim's music for the next two decades. Similarly representative are the authentic Bossa Nova guitar and drums, subtle variations of which occur on each tune. Throughout the recording, Jobim's songs are powerful enough for the melodies to stand up even sans lyrics. SKU: 4130236

Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls (Limited Edition) [PA]
Murderdolls: Wednesday 13 (vocals); Joey Jordison, Tripp Eisen (guitar); Eric Griffin (bass); Ben Graves (drums). Recorded at Sr. Audio, Des Moines, Iowa between April and May 2002. For his side project Murderdolls, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison threw a number of curves at Slipknot fans. For one thing, he emerged from behind the drumkit to play guitar, along with Tripp Eisen of Static-X fame. For another, the dark, grinding industrial metal of Slipknot is forsaken in favor a more light-hearted (at least relatively) and punk-inspired approach. While there are plenty of grisly scenarios presented in the lyricshere, they're generally of the trashy, b-movie variety previously employed by such seminal horror-punk outfits as the Misfits and the Cramps. The sheer savagery in the attack of the vocals, guitars, and drums should insure that Slipknot admirers don't feel too disenfranchised, but the lean, speedy, heavily ironic songs that populate the album are definitely a stylistic detour for Jordison. Healing Game, The
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Ronnie Johnson (electric guitar); Peter O'Hanlon (dobro); Leo Green (tenor saxophone, background vocals); Pee Wee Ellis (soprano & baritone saxophones, background vocals); Matt Holland (trumpet, background vocals); Haji Akbar (flugelhorn); Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipes, whistle); Robin Aspland, Phil Coulter (piano); Georgie Fame (Hammond organ, background vocals); Nicky Scott (bass); Alec Dankworth (acoustic bass); Geoff Dunn (drums, percussion); Ralph Salmins (percussion); Brian Kennedy, Katie Kissoon (background vocals). Recorded at Westland Studios and Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. When you're what the music industry calls a "career artist," with an appeal based on something more substantial than one hit single or album, you can go one of two ways. You can coast along from album to album, churning out variations on the formula that made you successful early in your career, or you can remain a vital, inventive artist, probing the outer reaches of your craft and continually searching for new vistas. THE HEALING GAME proves--not that there was any doubt--that Van Morrison is definitely in the latter camp. While tracks like "Rough God Goes Riding" and "Waiting Game" ride on the same R&B feel that has been the backbone of many Morrison albums, the lyrics paint a portrait of a man whose struggle with the verities of love, life and death is unending. Through these conflicts, the Celtic soul man is continually forced to seek out new ways of dealing with the world and himself. Bolstered by his longtime cohort, organist Georgie Fame, and a fullcomplement of first-class R&B musicians (including former James Brown sideman Pee Wee Ellis), Morrison tries to quench the fire in his soul through the cathartic healing power of the music. Constantines
Sub Pop follow their 2003 release of The Constantines' second album 'Shine A Light' with this reissue of the Canadian band's eponymously-titled debut. Originally put out by obscure indie label Three Gut in 2001, the album wasa surprise hit, winning the Canadian equivalent of a Brit award. It shows the development of the band's sound, a tough blast of raw garage rock whose poppy melodies and lyrics of working-class revolt have seen them compared to Bruce Springsteen. SKU: 6564813

Duo
Personnel: Charlie Hunter (8-string guitar); Leon Parker (drums, percussion). If the idea of a guitarist and drummer making a duo recording sounds odd, if not completely self-indulgent, you haven't yet met Charlie Hunter. For all practical purposes, DUO functions as a trio recording, except that Hunter wields his custom-built 8-string guitar with a virtuosity that enables him to play both bass lines and leads simultaneously. His partner on this date is the great Leon Parker,a talented percussionist with whom Hunter had long wanted to collaborate. The result is intimate and unpretentious, a stripped-down set whose stark beauty and sublime improvisational interplay open up new dimensions. Original highlights include Hunter's Latin-laced "Mean Streak" and Parker's angular "Belief"--both of which seem to have been inspired through jam sessions and pure spontaneous combustion. The dynamic duo also offers a moody take on the jazz standard "You Don't Know What Love Is," and a brilliant twist on Beach Boy Brian Wilson's "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)." With DUO, Charlie Hunter confirms his role as the preeminent guitarist of his generation. SKU: 5046233
