Alto saxophonist Paul Desmond has been considered one of the avatars of the cool school of jazz. One of the few saxophonists of his generation to not be overly influenced by Charlie Parker, Desmond favored a sound that was somewhat mellow, suave, smooth and dry--so much so that critics and fans would liken his style to "a very dry martini." These appellations certainly weren't meant to imply that there's no emotion or swing inhis playing, only that the focus is away from forced emotionalism.
TAKE TEN was recorded in 1963, with a small crew of sympatico musicians, including one of the finest mainstream jazz guitarists ever, Jim Hall. Hall and Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Connie Kay are the closest thing to "counterparts" on their instruments to the Desmond approach: tight, economical, tasteful. Everyone compliments each other perfectly. The program mixes originals, standards ("Alone Together") and several bossa nova pieces ("Samba De Orpheau," "Theme From Black Orpheus"). Desmond makes each piece his own. Nicely recorded, this album is recommended for both fans and newcomers.

In the lyrics of "California," Lenny Kravitz tells the tale of a girl he met as a youth, who played him recordings of "Who, Zeppelin, Beatles, Kiss, and the Rolling Stones." If Prince, Hendrix, and a few 1970s one-hit wonders had been added to the list, this might have been a tidy description of the sounds emanating from BAPTISM. Of course, Kravitz has always been much more than the sum of his influences. By taking the sound, energy, and attitude of classic rock and combining it with just the right dose of 21st-century urban music, the one-man band pays homage to pop history while creating something of his own. Here, he's unusually reflective and self-referential, repeatedly returning to themes of loneliness, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty about his life choices. Of course, this is no somber folk album, so fans can be assured that each track on BAPTISM rocks in Kravitz's trademark spare, blazing, guitar-driven style.

With LOW-LIFE, New Order truly hit their stride with their highly individual combination of infectious rhythms, inventive composition and performances full of conviction. This is the soundtrack to Elvis' fifth movie, made in early 1960. The version of "Blue Suede Shoes" on this soundtrack was recorded in 1960 and is different from the 1956 single version.

G.I. BLUES, Presley's first movie following his return from military service was, like most of his '60s movies, a light romantic comedy with plenty of musical numbers. As the decade progressed and the Presley movie formula ossified, Hollywood and Colonel Tom expended less effort finding suitable musical material for Presley to sing. Presley's earliest '60s movies, however, usually boasted strong soundtracks, and G.I. BLUES is among the best of them. None of the songs are embarrassing--no "Yoga Is As Yoga Does" or "Queenie Wahini's Papaya" here--and, in fact, nearly all are very good.
Best, of course, is the Carl Perkins classic "Blue Suede Shoes," but also excellent are a "Such A Night"-like boogie entitled "Tonight Is So Right For Love," the title track, and several lovely ballads, among them "Pocket Full Of Rainbows," "Wooden Heart," and the lullaby "Big Boots." Overall, G.I. BLUES doesn't rock quite as hard as Elvis' pre-Army soundtracks, but it does demonstrate considerably more life than most of the soundtracks that followed. In fact, Presley's movies might not be the object of derision they are today had Presley's handlers worked harder at getting him material of this quality for his later films.

Abunai!'s second full length is ostensibly a compilation disc of "Mystic River" psychedelic bands. The disc comes complete with extensive (and pretty damn funny) liner notes that document the "scene." Of course, the scene is Abunai!'s alone, and the band treads the line between loving parody and smug homage so carefully that you'll never know what side of the fence it's on. But that shouldn't matter, because the music's just so cool. From the full-tilt blast of "Rock Song" and the wah-wah pedal workout of "Barbara Allen" tothe infectious pop of "Learning To Ask," Abunai! moves huge tectonic plates of guitar sound. Abunai! is indeed, a one-band scene.

Born to Lebanese parents in a coastal town in Colombia, Shakira has followed an unlikely path to international stardom. She started making albums at 15, gradually merging her love for American folk-rock with her Latin sensibility, until she crossed over into the mainstream with CIEGO, SORDO, MUDO.

Long enamored of no-nonsense country music, Mekons singer/songwriter Jon Langford left his British punk roots behind to formwhat the cover of the Waco Brothers' debut album unabashedly proclaims as "the world's tuffest country band." Langford and company were no bandwagon jumpers, though--country music had played a part in the Mekon's music as well.
On LAST DEAD COWBOY, though, the Wacos embrace (and define) the country-punk aesthetic wholeheartedly, pounding out aggressive, socially conscious honky-tonk tunes with raw rock & roll energy and a winning sense of humor. The 4-CD set AT THE CLOSE OF A CENTURY is a chronological history of Stevie Wonder's commercial successes. The first CD documents his early Motown years on tracks that emphasize his frenetic singing and superb harmonica playing. The songs taken from MUSIC OF MY MIND, his first fully written and produced effort, show significant vocal development. CDs two and three include material from INNERVISIONS, SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, and TALKING BOOK, a creative period that is considered Wonder's strongest. It is on these cuts that Wonder uses his most varied production techniques and instrumentation to share his vivid creative spirit.
The fourth disc continues with pop hits recorded during the '80s and '90s, beginning with three songs he recorded for MUSIQUARIUM, and concluding with his duet with Babyface, "How Come, How Long." Disc four should surprise listeners who may remember only "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from Wonder's '80s work. Tracks like "Overjoyed" and "Ribbon in the Sky" make clear that Wonder had far more than one great song during the period. All of Emmylou Harris' albums from the '70s and early '80s are flawless gems. But if there is one that rises above the others, then QUARTER MOON IN A TEN CENT TOWN is that album. From song selection to performance and production, MOON is the perfect distillation of Harris' remarkable work during this period. During the seven years he recorded (1983-1990), Stevie Ray Vaughan's mixture of blues, jazz and soul influences revitalized modern blues at a time when its popularity was sagging considerably. Be it shuffles ("Empty Arms"), Grant Green-flavored instrumentals ("Riviera Paradise") or wah-wah driven funk played with his equally gifted sibling Jimmie ("Telephone Song"), Vaughan's musical range makes calling him "a blues guitarist" the equivalent of calling Mt. Everest a small hill.
Vaughan was always quick to acknowledge his influences by way of his covering their material. When he wasn't paying homage to blues giants like Howlin' Wolf ("Shake For Me") and Buddy Guy ("Leave My Girl Alone"), Vaughan wandered farther afield in tipping his hat to less obvious heroes like Dick Dale ("Pipeline"), Stevie Wonder ("Superstition") and legend Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister"). A truly eclectic compilation, this installment of the LATE NIGHT TALES series features tunes selected by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. For fans of the revered Oklahoma band, the initial attraction will likely be the Lips' take on the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army," a rare track recorded during a BBC radio session. However, what really impresses here is the range of other artists that Coyne has brought to the table. The mood is established with Bjork's hauntingly beautiful "Unravel," which is immediately followed by "My Ship," a gentle tune by jazz legend Miles Davis. Later, the styles shift from dreamy electronica (Aphex Twin's "Flim") to anthemic rock (the Chameleons' "Up the Down Escalator") to melancholy folk (Nick Drake's "River Man").Coyne enthusiastically comments on every track in the liner notes, making it clear that this excellent collection is a labor of love by a performer who's never stopped being a fan in his own right.

This 1987 release furthers bassist and composer Dave Holland's quintet work. The personnel from his excellent SEEDS OF TIME album from two years prior is the same with the exception of a change in the trombone chair--Julian Priester has departed, replaced by Robin Eubanks.
The opening "Brother Ty" is as close to straight-ahead bop as this ensemble gets. This is followed by the gorgeous ballad "Vadana." The interlocked horns of Eubanks and trumpet/flugelhorn/cornet player Kenny Wheeler are harmonically evocative at every turn. Steve Coleman's alto saxophone flies around them, while Holland and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith create a foundation that's alternately playful and industrious. Wheeler contributes one composition (the ethereal "5 Four Six") and Coleman another two, keeping this album on a nicely collective footing. Beautifully recorded in warm and crisp detail.
