Alive Before The Iceberg
The Posies: Jon Auer (vocals, guitar); Brian Young (drums); Ken Stringfellow, Joe Bass. Recorded live in Barcelona, Spain in 1998. Includes liner notes by Ken Stringfellow. During the summer leg of the Posies' farewell tour, the Northwest power-popsters played some shows in Spain during which they recorded the live ALIVE BEFORE THE ICEBERG. The fact that the group made its way through the Iberian Peninsula and fell in love with the culture and its fans during past junkets resulted in a particularly powerful performance. Although missed notes and sloppy playing bubble up amidst churning guitars, killer harmonies, and yearning vocals, ICEBERG turns out to be a delightfully honest record blissfully free of any post-production tinkering. Ripping through a set list primarily consisting of material from 1996's AMAZING DISGRACE and 1998's SUCCESS, (the Posies' final studio album), founders Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow both pour heaps of ragged emotion into their singing and playing. Among the highlights are a churning anthem of optimism ("Somehow Everything"), a punk-soaked tribute to Husker Du ("Grant Hart"), and a reconstructed Cheap Trick classic featuring the intro to "American Woman" ("Surrender"). Balancing out these energetic blasts are such tender ruminations as the harmony-soaked "You're the Beautiful One" and the gorgeous "Precious Moments." ALIVE is a bittersweet coda to a brilliant career. SKU: 1038322

Hellbilly Deluxe
Personnel: Rob Zombie (vocals); Danny Lohner, Mark Matcho (guitar, bass); Riggs (guitar); Blasko (bass); Tempesta, Tommy Lee (drums); Scott Humphrey, Paul DeCarli (programming). Recorded at The Chop Shop, Hollywood, California. "Superbeast" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. From the dark and twistedly clever mind of Rob Zombie, HELLBILLY DELUXE is an interesting concoction of industrial metal and hard rock. Throw in B-movie obsessions, brilliant, comic book-type art and fantasy-derived lyrics and you'll just begin to scratch the surface of what makes Rob Zombie tick. A throw back to the days of classic album cover art, HELLBILLY DELUXE contains a 24-page CD booklet with drawings and artwork from Zombie. "I grew up in the heyday of cool record packaging. Now, you open the record and you get nothing. I always feel cheated," said Zombie. Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee makes an appearance on two songs ("Resurrection Joe" and "Meet the Creeper"). Other tracks that show Zombie's mastery of shock-rock are "Superbeast," "Demonoid Phenomenon" and "What Lurks on ChannelX." Fans of Zombie's previous albums will not be disappointed by this horror-core creation. SKU: 1000705

Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere
Personnel includes: Slim Gaillard, Buddy Tate, Jay McShann, Jay Thomas. Recorded in 1982. This album was recorded in England in 1982, while Gaillard was in the midst of a European tour. He'd been performing for nearly 50 years by the time of these sessions, and he'd lost none of his ingratiating charms and manner. His voice--full of confidence and grace--had the resonance of a man then age 66 who had grown more complex with the passing decades. Here, Gaillard's in the company of some fine musicians, most notably Buddy Tate on tenor saxophone and clarinet andJay McShann on piano (Gaillard plays piano himself on a couple numbers, as well as guitar on others). While Gaillard's unique hybrid of friendly jive talk and easy grooves isn't as groundbreaking as it was when he first launched it in the '30s, this set is nonetheless solid and engaging; the sound of the band is broad and clear on this warm recording. Very Best Of Dwight Yoakam, The
Personnel: Dwight Yoakam (vocals, guitar); Buck Owens (vocals). Producer: Pete Anderson Compilation Producers: James Austin; Jimmy Edwards. Liner Note Author: Holly George-Warren. Recording information: 1986 - 2003. It's no coincidence that maverick country star Dwight Yoakam rose to prominence in Los Angeles during the 1980s, playing clubs with the likes of Los Lobos, X, and the Blasters. Yoakam's roots revivalism, which borrows equally from the Bakersfield honky-tonk of Buck Owens and vintage Sun Studios-era rockabilly, has much in common with a punk-inspired, back-to-basics approach. THE VERY BEST OF proves that despite--or maybe because of--Yoakam's category defiance, his musicis immensely appealing. Yoakam's willingness to bend the rules is evident in his choice of covers. Included here are a punchy version of "Suspicious Minds," a countrified take on Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me," and a swinging cover of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." To these and other tunes, Yoakam brings his country-rock flair and his truly beautiful baritone croon. But nothing matches his late-'80s cuts, particularly the rave-up barroom classic "Honky Tonk Man" and Yoakam's own "Guitars, Cadillacs," standouts on this excellent collection representing one of country's coolest and most distinctive stars. Back From Hell [Remastered]
Run-DMC: Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels (rap vocals); "Jam Master Jay" Mizell (keyboards, drums, scratches). Addtional personnel: Aaron Hall, Johnny McDowell (vocals); Tony Battaglia (guitar); Stanley Brown (keyboards, background vocals); Bobby Walker (drums, background vocals); David Reeves, Tahirah Walker (background vocals). Engineers: Ted Sabety, Julio Peno, David Kennedy. By 1990, RUN-DMC had been on top of the rapworld for most the last decade. BACK FROM HELL, though not the trio's most popular album with fans or critics, did have some strong tracks on it. Run and DMC both sound in prime form on tracks like "The Ave." and "Groove to the Sound." One of the better cuts on the album is "Pause," a high-energy, classic RUN DMC cut that is also included on the group's greatest-hits collection. Jam Master Jay is behind the wheels of steel as usual, heard at his finest on "Sucker DJ's." Though BACK FROM HELL lacked the explosive sound and commercial success of RUN-DMC's previous albums, it is nevertheless a strong offering from the Kings of Rap. SKU: 1087168

Approaching Silence
Personnel: David Sylvian (guitar, synthesizer, samples); Robert Fripp (guitar); Frank Perry (bells, bowed gong). Recorded in London, England and Minneapolis, Minnesota between 1990 & 1994. Originally conceived as music for multi-media installations, as an audio-only experience Sylvian's album provides us with a soporific dose of ambient sounds. The title track is made up of cyclical motifs ofbells and sustained chords reverberating like ripples on a pond, punctuated by a rich gong-like guitar chord. This is suffused with hushed animal calls, fragments of fuzzy talk-radio programmes and the garbled falsetto of contributor Robert Fripp. "Epiphany" takes sampled material of passing trains and hushed church bells and a plaintive human wailing phrase to make an all-too-brief interlude. Continuing in much the same atmospheric vein "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" is a summer doze in a wooded glade. Imagine chandeliers tinkling in the warm breeze and half-hear the faint sound of a distant civilisation. The hypnotic doze is peppered by shards of muted feedback buzzing in and out like an inquisitive bee, associating the music with its title. Bearing in mind this music was intended to accompany art installations it does work as an ambient album. It has less variety of sounds than, for example, the KLF's CHILL OUT but this disc serves to transport the patient listener to a calm and tranquil place. SKU: 1024960

Low [Remastered]
This isan Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, cello, harmonica, saxophone, piano, synthesizer, vibraphone, xylophone, pump bass, percussion, tapes, sound effects); Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, piano, Chamberlain, synthesizer); Carlos Alomar, Ricky Gardener (guitar); Eduard Meyer (cello); Roy Young (piano, Farfisa organ); Peter, Paul (piano, Arp synthesizer); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (percussion); Iggy Pop, Mary Visconti (background vocals). Recorded at Chateau d'Herouville, France and Hansa By The Wall, Berlin, Germany. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). The first (Heroes and Lodger would follow) of Bowie's three Berlin albums. Living there as a semi-recluse for three years, he worked with Svengali/producer Brian Eno and the results of their collaborations helped change the face of the European mainstream. Artists such as Gary Numan, Ultravox and OMD were indebted to the sound Bowie had created with the synthesizer to build a somewhat terse wall of sound. Critically acclaimed, but a relative commercial failure, apart from the surprise `Sound And Vision' hit single, it remains as a pertinent reminder of Bowie's ability to surprise and enlighten. Ravenchild
Personnel: Maddy Prior (vocals); Troy Donockley (acoustic & electric guitars, cittern, Uillean pipes, whistles, background vocals); Nick Holland (keyboards, background vocals); Nick Beggs (Chapman stick); Terl Bryant (drums, percussion). Having welcomed Gay Woods back into Steeleye Span some 25 years after her departure, Maddy Prior presumably thoughtthe time was right to bow out and concentrate on her solo career. With several solo albums and two splendid collaborations with June Tabor under her belt, there has always been more to Prior than just Steeleye Span. RAVENCHILD is a bold new beginning. Here Prior's main accomplices are Nick Holland on keyboards and Troy Donockley on guitars, pipes and whistles. Clearly the product of careful consideration, RAVENCHILD warms up with two traditional numbers before serving up the first of two conceptual suites. "With Napoleon In Russia" marries Prior's lyrics, concerned with the 1812 campaign, to traditional tunes. "Rigs Of The Time" is a traditional song rewritten to encompass contemporary social ills. The second suite, "In The Company Of Ravens," is an ambitious affair comprising six segued original songs inspired by a bird that features heavily in European and North American folklore. After this fare, the album concludes with seven minutes of the famous traditional ballad "Great Silkie Of Sules Skerry." SKU: 3109647

Reach Out
Includes liner notes byDerek Taylor. 1967's REACH OUT was the first of Burt Bacharach's classic string of albums for A&M Records, and the first album to focus on his brilliance not as a composer, but a producer and arranger. Featuring mostly instrumental or choir-vocal renditions of 11 of Bacharach's greatest songs, the lush arrangements, featuring brass, strings and woodwinds under Bacharach's graceful jazz-influenced piano solos, are the album's focal point. On most songs, an anonymous female choir sings only occasional snatches of Hal David's often-remarkable lyrics, so as not to distract from the beauty of the instrumental performances. This approach also makes sense when one considers that over half of these songs had already been recorded by the great Dionne Warwick, whose irresistible, inimitable voice had already made hers the definitive vocal renditions. REACH OUT is, in its way, the equal to Warwick's classic Bacharach/David sides. SKU: 1000462

Afro Eurasian Eclipse, The (A Suite In Eight Parts)
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Norris Turney (alto saxophone, clarinet, flute); Russell Procope (alto saxophone, clarinet); Paul Gonsalves, Harold Ashby (tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone); Cootie Williams, Money Johnson, Mercer Ellington, Eddie Preston (trumpet); Booty Wood, Malcolm Taylor (trombone); Chuck Connors (bass trombone); Joe Benjamin (bass); Rufus Jones (drums). Recorded at National Recording Studio, New York, New York on February 17, 1971. Originally released on Fantasy (9498). Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance. Digital remastered by Gary Hobish (1991, Fantasy Studio, Berkeley, California). Recorded in 1971, THE AFRO-EURASIAN ECLIPSE reads in many ways like a follow-up to the 1967 epic FAR EAST SUITE. Compelling, cosmopolitan and organic, this music comes from Ellington's sifting of travel experiences, and it sounds as if he is using his impressions of places and peoples rather than appropriations of 'authentic' scales and rhythms. "Chinoiserie" is boisterous and fun, with long-tone horn peals forming the melodic cornerstone. Tenorman Harold Ashby takes his place blowing pure swing. "Afrique" is a percussion-based piece, with a liberal layering of the horn players' entrances - creating strains that are at first incongruous, then tie briefly together towards the middle of the affair. Preceded by the more even-tempered melodic and rhythmic structures of "Acht" and "Gong," "Tang" takes thepicture to the outer limits again with strident opening horn blasts that yield to staccato call-and-responses that chill to the bone. All in all, a textured, cross-cultural treat for the ears. SKU: 1036540

All The Way...A Decade Of Song [SACD]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Celine Dion, R. Kelly, Peabo Bryson, Frank Sinatra (vocals); Walter Afansieff (acoustic guitar, Synclavier acoustic gutiar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, programming); Michael Thompson, Eddie Martinez, Dan Huff, Esbjorn Ohrwall, Jacques Saugy, Dean Parks, Tim Pierce (guitar); Taro Hakase (violin); Joel Peskin (electronic oboe); Jon Gilutin (piano, keyboards); Jeff Bova, Max Martin, Kristian Lundin (keyboards, programming); David Foster (keyboards); Guy Roche (synthesizer); Yoshinobu Takeshita (bass, programming); Steve Buslowe, Thomas Lindberg (bass); KennyAronoff, John Robinson (drums); Shania Twain, Todd Rundgren, Mutt Lange, Philip Ingram, Sue Ann Carwell (background vocals). Producers include: David Foster, Guy Roche, R. Kelly, Max Martin, Rene Angelil. "All The Way" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. This greatest-hits package, the first from pop icon Celine Dion, gathers Dion's biggest chart-toppers of the '90s and also includes a handful of new compositions. In the album's liner notes, the honey-voiced singer offers heartfelt thanks to her fans and confirms speculation that she plans take time away from music to focus on her family. Hits include "Beauty and the Beast," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," and "My Heart Will Go On," the impassioned theme song from TITANIC. Among the new songs, her dramatic, tremolo-drenched rendering of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is marked by Dion's typical midsong climaxes. "All the Way" is a tribute to Frank Sinatra, delivered in a manner similar to Natalie Cole's tribute to her father, Nat "King" Cole, on "Unforgettable" -- Dion's vocals float with eerie effect among the ghostly strains of Ol' Blue Eyes. The song is also dedicated to Dion's husband, Rene, the man for whom Celine saves her greatest passion. SKU: 1070784

Wedding Singer Vol.1, The
Producers include: Chris Ballew, Dave Dederer, Jason Finn, John Porter, Brooks Arthur. The soundtrack to THE WEDDING SINGER is a journey back to the days of skinny ties and voluminous hair. The roster consists of slower, more somber hits, of which there was no shortage among the bands of the English new wave. From the Smiths' hypnotic classic "How Soon Is Now?" to the fatalistic throb of New Order's "Blue Monday," THE WEDDING SINGER consciously avoids the light-hearted fluff for which the eighties are too often remembered. This noble purpose is helped along by thehaunting "Love My Way" by The Psychedelic Furs and Billy Idol's amusingly macho "White Wedding." It's not all pouting and running eyeliner, however. In fact, the album opens with a modern re-working of the Buggles' classic "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Presidents Of The United States Of America which is somehow even quirkier than the original. Also included are "Somebody Kill Me," an 80's-style send-up by the film's star, Adam Sandler, and a very bizarre version of "Rapper's Delight," sung by actress Ellen Dow. SKU: 4122764

Beatles For Sale
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, piano); George Harrison (vocals, guitar, African drum); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, Hammond organ, bass); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, timpani, percussion). Additional personnel: George Martin (piano). Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor. A testament to the abundance of perseverance and talent within the Beatles' ranks, their fourth album was recorded in and around a busy North American and British tour schedule. BEATLES FOR SALE also marked their last full-length release loaded with cover songs, as the Fab Four moved towards writing more of their own material. Interspersed between Beatles classics such as "Eight Days a Week" and the Dylan-inspired "I'm a Loser" are faithful renditions of songs by Buddy Hollyand Carl Perkins (featuring the only lead vocals by Ringo Starr and George Harrison on this album). The frenetic, inspired take on Chuck Berry's "Rock And Roll Music" is only superseded by a tremendous medley of "Kansas City" and "Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey," that finds Paul McCartney's exuberant vocals comparing admirably to his hero Little Richard, providing a vibrant centerpiece on BEATLES FOR SALE. Sweet Baby James
Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); DannyKootch (guitar); Red Rhodes (steel guitar); Chris Darrow (fiddle); Carole King (piano); Randy Meisner, Bobby West, John London (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums). Recorded at Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California in December 1969. Taylor had already `seen and been' enough by the time this album was released, having survived drug addiction and mental institutions by the age of 19, not to mention broken relationships. There was much for the listener to relate to during those heady days and this album made him a star, a status from which he tried to recoil. Two tracks from this album have been performed at every Taylor gig for 25 years - the irritating but necessary `Steamroller' and his greatest song, `Fire And Rain', which tells the story of his first 20 years in just over three minutes.
