Gazeuse
Those happening upon Gong circa 1976 would be hard pressed to draw any connection to the Gong of just two years before. With most of the original members gone (though surprisingly, old bassist FrancisMoze replaces Mike Howlett here), GAZEUSE marks the full and final transformation of Gong from spacy/psychedelic hippies to serious, cerebral jazz-rock fusion band. In a genre where technique is all, it's fortunate that all the members were extremely gifted players (and no compositional slouches either). In addition to drummer Pierre Moerlen (who would soon emerge as Gong Mark II's leader) and mallet percussionist Mirielle Bauer, percussionists Mino Cinelu and Benoit Moerlen were added. So even though new member/future fusion demigod Allan Holdsworth contributes plenty of lightning-fast guitar work, the dominant force here is percussion. Consequently, much of GAZEUSE is funky and propulsive in a way the bulk of '70s fusion wasn't. Radio Gnome Trilogy fans may not feel at home here, but anyone with a taste for arty jazz-rock should partake of GAZEUSE's often overlooked sonic treasures. SKU: 5046909

Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars
Full title: Halfway Between The Gutter & The Stars. Personnel includes: Fatboy Slim, Ashley Slater, Roger Sanchez, Macy Gray, Bootsy Collins, Roland Clark, Shinehead. HALFWAY BETWEEN THE GUTTER & THE STARS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, drops the overwrought fratboy party appeal of his previous releases for this subdued take on the "Big Beat" formula. Cook conjures up soulful, gospel-inflected music that draws equally from classic rock as it does from acid house. Cook's samples vary wildly, from Jim Morrison to Bill Withers, but are part of considered arrangements and beautifully restrained production. Things get off to a contemplative start with the opening track "Talking Bout My Baby." It sets the tone for the rest of the album, a contrast of introspective emotions and peak hour party stompers perfectly illustrated by the track "Sunset (Bird Of Prey)," which samples a Doors acapella over an ambient breakbeat track to great effect. The pace of the recordis generally upbeat, especially on the sleazy funk track featuring Macy Gray "Love Life" and the hip-hop bossanova of "Weapons of Choice," which includes a performance by a heavily vocodered Bootsy Collins. The gospel influence extends to the final track "Song For Shelter," an exuberant statement for global house culture making implicit the connection between dance music and spiritual experience. '64-'95
"Come Down to Me," the first song on electronica duo Lemon Jelly's third full-length album, begins with a massive guitar sound crashing heavily over a shuddering drum loop and weaving synth patterns. The fusion is indicative of Lemon Jelly's mix-and-match aesthetic. On '64-'95, Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen thread acoustic and electric guitars, strings, heady keyboard melodies, meaty bass parts, and a staggering array of eclectic samples through grooves and beats derived from hip-hop, soul, techno, and house. The result is a whiplash melange of styles that is as surprising as it is accessible and fun. The title of the album refers to the years from which Lemon Jelly lifted its source material. The listener has the impression of traveling through time, from the ringing, old-school barbershopstrains of "The Slow Train" to the smooth 1970s soul of "Stay with You" to the avant-garde swirl of "The Shouty Track." Occasionally Lemon Jelly put its tongue so firmly in cheek that it's hard not to smile (note the use of William Shatner reciting poetry on "Go"), but for the most part, '64-'95 is serious DJ artistry--dense, inventive tracks that are equally suitable for headphone meditation and dance-floor workouts. Madonna (The First Album/Remastered)
Includes rare 12" dance remixes previously unavailable on CD. Personnel: Madonna (vocals, cowbell); Reggie Lucas (guitar, programming); Ira Siegel, Curtis Hudson, Paul Pesco (guitar);Bobby Malach (tenor saxophone); Fred Zarr (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Moog synthesizer, drums); Dean Gant (piano, electric piano, synthesizer); Ed Walsh (synthesizer); Raymond Hudson (bass); Anthony Jackson (electric bass); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Leslie Ming (programming); Gwen Guthrie, Norma Jean Wright, Brenda White, Chrissy Faith, Tina B. (background vocals). Producers include: Reggie Lucas, John "Jellybean" Benitez, Mark Kamins. Engineers include: Jim Dougherty, Michael Hutchinson, Jay Mark. Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Punk and disco were the major musical innovations of the '70s. No one utilized these sources as shrewdly as Madonna, whose 1983 self-titled debut still sounds sharp 15 years later. A CBGB-era band waif who also loved the N.Y. dance club scene, Madonna Ciccone brought the brash, self-determining ethos of punk rock to the ecstastic melodic lift of Chic-style dance music. That other N.Y. sex symbol, Debbie Harry of Blondie, also had her biggest hits ("Heart Of Glass," "Rapture") when she flirted with disco and rap, but a winking flirtation is all it remained. Her reputation as a master of imagemaking notwithstanding, Madonna never had much use for irony. Songs like the soulful "Borderline" and the celebratory "Holiday" were heartfelt stabs at commercial pop success in which the singer never condescends to the listener. Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers produced her next album, and the rest is history. SKU: 1059769

Yo Bum Rush The Show
Public Enemy: Chuck D, Flavor-Flav (rap vocals); Norman "Terminator X" Rogers (scratches); The Security Of The First World. Additional personnel: Vernon Reid (guitar); Bill Stephney (guitar, bass); Hank Shocklee, Eric Sadler (synthesizer, drum programming); Steve Linsley (bass); Johnny "Juice" Rosado (scratches). Recorded at Spectrum City Studios, Hempstead, New York. From "Strong Island" (Long Island, New York) came the unstoppable sound of Public Enemy, a rap bandthat saw itself as a vital, explicitly political voice in the black community. YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW, their debut album, filled a gap in hip-hop: raps that attempted to delineate black suffering in America, and instill pride in the place of hopelessness. The balance between Chuck D's explosive raps and Flavor Flav's humorous asides played perfectly off the scratching of DJ Terminator X. While some critics branded them "too hostile," their message spread to fans of all colors. SKU: 3104175

Shine Eyed Mister Zen
Personnel: Kelly Joe Phelps (vocals, guitar); Dave Mathis (harmonica). Recordedat The Barley Cap, Portland, Oregon. For his third album, 1999's SHINE EYED MISTER ZEN, folk/blues guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps both expands and contracts his musical vision. Recorded almost solo--Dave Mathis blows harmonica on two tracks--at a club in Portland, Oregon, the new material here stretches far afield from the comparatively traditional songs on his first two albums, LEAD ME ON and ROLL AWAY THE STONE. The lengthy "House Carpenter" opens the album with some stinging acoustic slide guitar and Phelps' oblique yet evocative lyrics, followed by the pretty folk ballad "River Rat Jimmy." The album continues to alternate between Delta-style country blues like the John Lee Hookerish "Piece by Piece" and folkier songs including a lovely version of Leadbelly's classic "Goodnight Irene" that somehow finds something new in this much-recorded tune. The newfound folk influence is an intriguing new direction for Phelps. SKU: 5066920

Issues
Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipes, drums, programming); Munky, Head (guitar); Fieldy (bass, programming); David Silveria (drums). Additional personnel: Jeffy Lube (programming). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California and Southern Tracks Recording, Atlanta, Georgia. The music of Korn speaks to those on the fringes of society. The band's trademark hip-core has evolved into a more clearly defined but equally urgent musical vision. Korn's sense of musical urgency and its ambition to make its mark on music is furthered with ISSUES. "Beg for Me" is a track likely to incite the swirling pits at the band's legendary live shows. Showing that the group hasn't lost its down-to-earth sensibility, Korn invited fans to compete for the cover art of ISSUES, releasing versions featuring the winning piece as well as the efforts of three finalists. The emotional journey undergone by vocalist Johnathan Davis on tracks like "Hey Daddy" is truly strengthened by his movement away from his more abrasive vocal style and toward a moredominantly melodic approach. Davis digs more deeply into his tortured emotions on efforts such as "No Way," where he sings: "lately things aren't going my way / lately everything is gray / it feels like something / it feels like nothing." That hazy emotional landscape is what strikes a responsive chord with Korn fans and makes ISSUES a landmark album. SKU: 6435587

Gutterflower
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Goo Goo Dolls: Johnny Rzeznik (vocals, guitar); Robby Takac (bass, background vocals); Mike Malinin (drums). Additional personnel includes: Tim Pierce (guitar); Kim Bullard, Doug McKean (programming); Luis Conte, Greg Suran, Jamie Muhoberac, Rob Cavallo. When the Goo Goo Dolls solidified their place in the pop mainstream with 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL, one of the casualties was frontman Johnny Rzeznik's marriage. For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set ofsongs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop. Lines like "How does it feel when you're out on your own/And now it's too late to come home" on the Pearl Jam-flavored "What A Scene" and "I'm torn in pieces/I'm blind and waiting for you" on the catchy and whip-smart "Big Machine" are self-explanatory. For more emotional turbulence, see the mandolin-soaked delicacy of "Sympathy" and the epic "Truth Is A Whisper" with its driven tempo and churning guitars. Bassist Robby Takac claims a third of the songwriting credit on GUTTERFLOWER and proves to be as talented as his Rzeznik at crafting memorable cuts. Delivering the goods with a higher-pitched rasp than Rzeznik, Takac shines on the INXS pop-funk of "Up, Up, Up," soaring ear-candy "Smash" and punkier abandon of "Tucked Away." Cultivators of aggressive guitar-pop with an adult edge, The Goo Dolls once again score with the bittersweet bud that is GUTTERFLOWER. SKU: 1071679

Hail To The Thief
Radiohead: Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano, programming); Ed O'Brien (vocals, guitar, sound effects); Jonny Greenwood (guitar, toy piano, glockenspiel, programming, sampling); Colin Greenwood (synthesizer, bass, samples); Philip Selway (drums, percussion). Principally recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California. Not since the Beatles has a group managed to combine mass popularity and cutting-edge aesthetic triumphs soconsistently as Radiohead, who by the time of HAIL TO THE THIEF had been on a roll since 1997's OK COMPUTER (as great as THE BENDS was, it didn't garner the band mainstream attention). While KID A and AMNESIAC had been outre, boundary-pushing attempts to expand the pop-rock palette even beyond the ambitious OK COMPUTER, HAIL TO THE THIEF incorporates the avant-garde techniques developed in that journey, applying them to more formal song structures. In this way, we get the best of both worlds on what just might be Radiohead's best album yet. Though this isn't a return to the straight-ahead pop structures of THE BENDS, the guitar does make a welcome return here. There are plenty of glitchy electronics and atmospheric keyboards, etc., but they're integrated with traditional "rock" instrumentation" in a completely organic way. Though they remain art-rockers to the end, with Thom Yorke expressing carefully wrought angst both personal and political, Radiohead injects some blood into things as well. The occasional hard-grooving funk rhythm and crazed rock guitar riff keeps even the airiest sentiments well anchored, making HAIL TO THE THIEF as well balanced as it is progressive. SKU: 1082693

Orange Blossom Special
Personnel: Johnny Cash (vocals); Luther Perkins, Norman L. Blake, Robert L. "Bob" Johnson, Ray Edenton (guitar); Charles R. "Charlie" McCoy (harmonica); Homer L. "Boots" Randolph (saxophone); William K. "Bill" McElhiney, Karl R. Garvin (trumpet); Floyd Cramer (piano); Marshall Grant (bass); W.S. Holland (drums). Producers: Don Law, Frank Jones. Reissue producer: Al Quaglieri. Includes liner notes by Billy Altman and Johnny Cash. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder and Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). The song that gives this mid-'60s album its title is a further exploration of Johnny Cash's love of trains as first heard on the 1960 concept album RIDE THIS TRAIN. The light-hearted, harmonica-led tune would become one of the most-loved songs in Cash's repertoire, but it's not even the high point here. Cash's Bob Dylan fixation is at its high point as he tackles no less than three Dylan tunes to fine effect. His stately version of the faux-traditional "Long Black Veil" is possibly the finest take on this oft-covered song. A little-known highlight is "All God's Children Ain't Free," a protest song that displaysthe admirable, iconoclastic populism that was at the heart of Cash's personal politics. The country-folk chestnut "Wildwood Flower" is a tip of the hat to the Carter Family and Cash's future wife June Carter. Three previously unreleased tunes spice things up on this reissue, including an alternate take on Dylan's ambivalent love song "Mama You've Been on My Mind." SKU: 1071283

Counterparts
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, synthesizer); Alex Lifeson (acoustic & electric guitars); Neil Peart (drums, electronic percussion). Additional personnel: Michael Kamen (conductor); John Webster (keyboards). Principally recorded at McClear Pathe, Toronto, Canada from April to June 1993. "Leave That Thing Alone" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Reuniting with POWER WINDOWS/HOLD YOUR FIRE producer Peter Collins, Rush released their fifteenth studio album (and nineteenth overall). During its recording, guitarist Alex Lifeson wanted the album to be more hard rock-oriented, while bassist Geddy Lee was content with their recent excursions in melodic pop. Lifeson must have won the battle, because COUNTERPARTS is a harder-rocking affair than Rush's previous several albums. It's also the strongest and most consistent set of songs the band had composed in a while, with a grittier feel (an element sorely missed by fans of the band's 1970s work). COUNTERPARTS contains at least one track that deals with a topicalissue (as in 1989's anti-suicide "The Pass," etc.)--"Nobody's Hero" is Rush's analysis of the AIDS situation. But not all of the tracks were conceived as lyrical epics; the opening "Animate" and "Stick It Out" delight in the strength of the band's re-discovered hard rock chops. And while the sheer force of "Cut To the Chase" serves as the track's catalyst, the band's pop sensibilities come back into play on the album's closer, "Everyday Glory." COUNTERPARTS is Rush's greatest work of the '90s. SKU: 1017063

Words
The Tony Rich Project: Tony Rich (vocals, various instruments, programming); Nuri (vocals); Peter Moore, John Frye (acoustic guitar); Reggie Griffin (electric guitar); Joe Rich (keyboards); Colin Wolfe (bass). Engineers include: Neal H. Pogue, Blake Eisman, Shy Boy. Recordedat Studio LaCoCo and Doppler Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. WORDS includes a poem written by Tony Rich in memory of his father, Jose B. Jeffries. WORDS won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The album earned three additional Grammy nominations: "Nobody Knows" was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance; "Like A Woman" was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance; and The Tony Rich Project was nominated for Best New Artist. The grooves are quiet, contemplative. The sound is subdued. The songs are masterful, loosely woven patterns. Call it "stream-of-consciousness soul" (Tony Rich, we are told, doesn't start composing until the tape machine starts running), and the final result is a compelling, potentially groundbreaking debut from this young, Atlanta-based artist. L.A. and Babyface gave Rich his first big break as a writer/producer for their LaFace label, but this gifted musician shines brightest as a performer. Often, his songs break down into simple, strummed acoustic guitar parts, layers of harmonized vocals, and raw, real lyrics--no syrup or false emotions here. Rich, who grew up in Detroit with a father who also sang and wrote music, favors a subtle, almost whispered approach, borne out in songs like "The Grass Is Green," and the single, "Nobody Knows." Add a welcome gospel touch on the hypnotic "Leavin'," and you've got one of 1996's strongest R&B records. SKU: 1003429

Live (Collector's Edition) [ECD] [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. This edition also comes with a pull-out, 2-sided poster. AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Chris Slade (drums). All tracks were recorded during AC/DC's 1990-1991 world tour. Originally released as Atco (92212). The 2003 edition of AC/DC LIVE includes liner notes by Don Kaye. All tracks have been digitally remastered. AC/DC reclaimed its status as gutbucket rock n' rollers to be reckoned with on this searing double-disc live set. The year was 1992, more than 15 years after the group's first recording. By this point, the band was approaching middle age, atime when most rockers settle into the lazy comfort of their genres. From the opening guitar shards of "Thunderstruck," it is clear no such concessions have been made. The bass drum falls in, not so much a timekeeper as an underground detonation device, and the repeated cries of "thunder!" gain volume like an approaching army. The difference being that this is an army with one mission and one mission only: to knock the lights out of anyone within earshot. The album succeeds not only because the exuberant pounding the band gives to the familiar "Back in Black," "Highway to Hell," "Shoot to Thrill" and "Who Made Who," but also because of the equal pulverizing of older Bon Scott era numbers such as "Sin City" and "High Voltage." Vocalist Brian Johnson, in particular, injects some his best screeches in years. SKU: 1080644

Producers: Gram Parsons, Rik Grech. Engineers: Hugh Davies, Ed Barton. Recorded at Wally Heider Studio 4, Los Angeles, California in September and October 1972. GRIEVOUS ANGEL: Personnel: Gram Parsons (vocals, acoustic guitar); Herb Pederson (acoustic & electric guitars); Bernie Leadon (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro); Al Perkins (pedal steel guitar); Glen D. Hardin (piano); Steve Snyder (vibraphone); Ronnie Tutt, N.D. Smart II (drums); Kim Fowley, Phil Kaufman, Ed Tickner, Jane Doe, Joe Doe (background vocals). Producer: Gram Parsons. Engineer: Hugh Davies. Recorded at Wally Heider Studio 4 and Capitol Records Studios, Hollywood, California in the summer, 1973. Includes liner notes by John M. Delgatto and Marley Brant. Few innovators of American musics in the late Twentieth Century left as indelible a print on all they touched as Gram Parsons. Like a cultural whirlwind affecting everything in its path, Parsons applied his love of traditional country textures to the burgeoning rock movement exploding all around him, in an attempt to come up with what he labeled "Cosmic American Music." First as a temporary member of the Byrds, then as one of the founders of the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons almost singlehandedly invented country-rock, forever changing the relationship between the two genres. And though many artists have followed his lead, no one else has come close to rekindling the flame that was extinguished when he passed away. GP, which was released in January of 1973, and GRIEVOUS ANGEL, released posthumously in January of 1974, are the only two studio albums on which Parsons served as the lone bandleader; consequently, they come closest to fulfilling his true vision. For these recordings, that vision began with the recruitment of Elvis Presley's band--James Burton, Ron Tutt, Al Perkins and Glen Hardin are all here, playing up a collective storm--and was furthered by the addition of a theretofore unknown singer named Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals. The spirit that these players summoned up relied on traditions--from Bill Monroe's bluegrass explorations and Hank Williams' honky tonk dirges, to Big Joe Turner's classic R&B stomps and Chuck Berry's original brand of rock 'n' roll. Gram made sure that no musical stone would be left unturned. Then again, GP/GRIEVOUS ANGEL's greatness doesn't rest only onthe shoulders of the music, for Parsons' lyrical vision seemed as breathless as the sounds that accompanied it. There were different kinds of Parsons originals--character studies, break- SKU: 1000789

New Found Power [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Damageplan: Pat Lachman (vocals); Dimebag Darrell (guitar); Bob Zilla (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Additional personnel includes: Zakk Wylde. Producers: Vinnie Paul, Dimebag Darrell, Sterling Winfield, Pat Lachman. Principally recorded at Marshall Sound Design, Dallas, Texas. The demise of Pantera reverberated deeply in the hearts and minds of heavy music fans. From the ashes of a very public split with vocalist Phil Anselmo, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul took solace in a simple mantra--new found power. The duo set out to build a new band in that very spirit as a vehicle forDarrell's trademark blistering riffs and Paul's precision skin-bashing. Initially flying under the flag New Found Power, the band added bassist and fellow Texan Bob Zilla and became known as Damageplan. Former Halford guitarist Pat Lachman makes his vocal debut on NEW FOUND POWER. The result is a study in extremes that spans the horizon from borderline death-metal vocals ("Reborn") to clean melodic singing ("Save Me"). Pantera fans may hear echoes of their beloved band's heyday in the thrashy abandon of "F### You" and the trudging "Moment of Truth." Not resting on formula, however, Damageplan explores an industrial vibe with "Explode" and haunting Alice in Chains inspired harmonies on "Soul Bleed." An impressive first effort, NEW FOUND POWER draws a line in the sand that only serious metal enthusiasts need cross. SKU: 6549916

Underground
Personnel: Courtney Pine (soprano & tenor saxophones, bass clarinet, flute); Jhelisa (vocals); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Cyrus Chestnut (acoustic piano, Hammond B-3 organ, Wurlitzer electric piano); Mark Whitfield (guitar); Reginald Veal (acoustic bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums); DJ Pogo (DJ). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York and The Strongroom, London, England from March 17-21 and 23-28, 1997. Includes liner notes by Courtney Pine. Courtney Pine and company turn in an eclectic batch of tunes on UNDERGROUND. A hugely talented saxophonist, Pine is never satisfied to stand in one spot for long. In one song he may cover a myriad of bases from hip-hop to funk to hard-bop and any place in between. Generous use of samples and turntables and the accompaniment of young lions like Nicholas Payton, Mark Whitfield, and Cyrus Chestnut show right away this is no run-of-the-mill blowing session. Pine's improvisations alone reflect a rich background of influences from John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy to David Sanborn and Clarence Clemons. From the outset, with tunes inspired by Eddie Harris, Cannonball Adderly, Alice Coltrane, Horace Silver and others, Pine's diverse skills are apparent as he weaves in and out of swing, funk and hip-hop grooves, all the while maintaining a sense that this cat came to PLAY! He is certainly not content to sit back and letthe sampled grooves do all the work. Take away all the samples and effects and you still have a musician capable of expression and grace. This is one of Pine's most enjoyable outings to date. SKU: 3101302

Round About Midnight (Live In Concert)
Full performer name: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Bobby Watson (alto saxophone); Billy Pierce (tenor saxophone); Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); James Williams (piano); Charles Fambrough (drums). Additional personnel: Ellis Marsalis (piano). Recorded live at Bubbas, Fort Lauderdale, Florida on October 11, 1980. Includes liner notes by David Stonard. Art Blakey's early '80s band is largely credited with introducing the world to Wynton Marsalis and Bobby Watson. Recorded live in Florida, the band romps through a powerful set of mostly standards, save for Watson's original "Bitter Dose," that highlights the talented young starsas well as their legendary leader, Blakey. The group's highly motivated arrangements help to set this edition of the Messengers apart from the many others. In particular, cuts like the driving signature piece "Moanin'," a punchy version of Monk's "'Round Midnight," and the Marsalis feature "My Funny Valentine" offer the best visions of what these future leaders would become. Through it all, Art Blakey is the driving force. SKU: 1033586

Mama Said Knock You Out
Personnel: LL Cool J., Bomb, Big Money, Grip, Hic (rap vocals); Darren Lightly (keyboards, background vocals); Cliff Lightly, Eric Williams (background vocals). Engineers include: Marley Marl, David Kennedy, "Doc" Rodriguez. Recorded at Marley Marl's House Of Hits, Chestnut Ridge, New York and Chung King House Of Metal, New York. "Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years/Rockin' the mic, puttin' suckers in fear." Despite that disclaimer, MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT was indeed a resurgence--both commercial and personal--for LL, coming as it did after a long battle with substance abuse. Although the title track saw a return to the raw b-boy machismo of "Rock The Bells" after a few years of party jams and rap ballads, L was not about to abandon the tropes of sex symbol and party-emcee. Accordingly, the testosterone level of "Boomin' System," and "Farmers Blvd." (a posse cut dedicated to the street-corner sessions which molded his style) is balanced with more seductive monologues ("Around The Way Girl," "6 Minutes Of Pleasure," "Mr. Goodbar") and straight comedy ("CheesyRat," "Milky Cereal"). More than adherence to any particular style, it's LL's original and articulate delivery that carries the album, which is also blessed with the production skills of Marley Marl. Marley definitely pulled out the stops for this one, dusting off a few classic beats to set next to those he'd obviously been saving specifically for a record of this scope. SKU: 1003694

Single Man, A [Remastered]
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, harmonium, Clavinet, church organ, keyboards); Davey Johnstone (guitar, synthesizer, background vocals); Tim Renwick (guitar); B.J. Cole (steel guitar); Paul Buckmaster (cello); John Crocker (winds); Patrick Halcox, Henry Lowther (trumpet); Jim Shepherd (trombone); Herbie Flowers (bass); Steve Holly (drums); Ray Cooper (marimba, congas, tympani, tambourine, percussion); Clive Franks (percussion, background vocals); Vicki Brown, Stevie Lang, Joanne Stone, Watford Football Team, South Audley Street Girl's Choir, Gary Osborne (background vocals). Engineers: Phil Dunne, Stuart Epps, Clive Franks. Recorded at the Mill At Cookham, Berks, England between January & September 1978. Originally released on MCA (3065). Includes liner notes by Chris White. Digitally remastered by Gus Dudgeon (Abbey Road Studios). The aptly titled A SINGLE MAN finds Elton John working without legendary partner Bernie Taupin, his usual lyricist, during a much-needed break from each other, following their turbulent, albeit wildly successful mid '70s collaborations. Joining forces instead with Gary Osborne, Elton takes the opportunity to present an album of pure craft--with its scaled down production, A SINGLE MAN is an almost live-sounding album, one of his most straightforward. This approach places in even greater relief John's gift for combining widely varying musical atmosphere with beautiful melodies and honest emotional performance. If A SINGLE MAN didn't produce any legendary hits for Elton John, it provided a welcome chance for him to cool off and just write songs. As is his wont, John takes on a wide variety of styles: the Spanish-sounding melancholia of "Return To Paradise" moves handily into the upbeat strut of "I Don't Care" in a stylistic segue which few could pull off. The swaggering honky-tonk of "Big Dipper" finds itself juxtaposed with the soft rock of "It Ain't Gonna Be Easy." Stripped down though it may be, the album isn't without its epic--inthis case it's the heavily orchestrated, under-sung "Song For Guy." SKU: 1014668

The Jacksons: Michael, Tito, Jackie, Marlon, Randy. Additional personnel includes: Dexter Wansel (arranger); MFSB. Producers include: Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, Dexter Wansel, The Jacksons. Recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Paragon Studios, Chicago, Illinois. For their first releaseon Epic Records after leaving Motown and Berry Gordy behind, the newly re-christened Jacksons shuffled brothers, as Jermaine left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Randy, a younger, yet-unseen brother. After a phenomenally successful seven years as the Jackson Five, the group's second incarnation released its eponymous debut album in 1976, helmed by songwriter/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. THE JACKSONS finds the group at an interesting crossroads. As the Jackson 5, they were able to kick up a youthful ruckus with their music but here seem to be undergoing growing pains. They succeed mostly by grafting their smooth sounding groove onto the material (they scored two big dance hits with "Enjoy Yourself" and "Show You the Way to Go"). "Keep on Dancing," with Michael's growls and imminent signs of maturity, is a standout, as is "Strength of One Man," which gives all the brothers an opportunity to sing inspirational lead vocals. For a super group still a few years away from unleashing Michael on an unsuspecting audience, THE JACKSONS is a fun, questing album. SKU: 1010144
