Younger Than Yesterday [Remastered]
The 1996 reissue of YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY includes six bonus tracks: "It Happens Each Day," "Don't Make Waves," "Lady Friend," "Old John Robertson" (the B-side of the "Lady Friend" single), and alternate versions of "My Back Pages" and "Mind Gardens." The Byrds: David Crosby (vocals, guitar); Jim McGuinn (vocals, 12-string guitar); Chris Hillman(vocals, bass); Michael Clarke (drums). Additional personnel: Vern Gosdin (acoustic guitar); Clarence White (electric guitar); Hugh Masekela (horns). Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded in 1966-67. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan. Digitally remastered using 20-Bit Super Mapping system. Released in April 1967, months before the Summer Of Love, YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY was proof that The Byrds had already graduated from their fascination with the psychedelic "scene." "Eight Miles High" may have introduced the general public to the counter culture's interests and fascinations, but this song cycle found The Byrds reluctant to rest their faith in either the growing movement they helped bring together, or the art form that was the movement's voice. The sonic lessons they'd learned still infused many of the tracks. Tape-loops created the splendorous backdrop of "Mind Gardens," the Eastern modes used on "Eight Miles High" reappeared on the re-recorded "Why," and "C.T.A.-102" seemed less a song than an excuse to use the studio as a laboratory for new sounds. But a new direction was emerging. "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star," a tongue-in-cheek treatise on fame, and Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages," the best known tracks here, both hinted at a reevaluation of previously settled matters. David Crosby's folky, Eastern-tinged "Everybody's Been Burned" may have been written well before he joined the group, but it is a dark declaration on moderation, trust and responsibility, that comfortably fits within the context of the era. And Chris Hillman's country-minded contributions not only grounded The Byrds with a salt-of-the-earth feel missing from the rest of the album, but hinted at the Nashville sound where they and many of their psychedelic brethren would soon end up. Now, as then, YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY seems like the precursor to a generation's truer awakening. SKU: 1001160

Trans Europe Express
Kraftwerk: Ralf Hutter, Florian Schneider (vocals, synthesizer); Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flur (electronic percussion). Engineers: Peter Bollig, Thomas Kuckkuck, Bill Halverson. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Kraftwerk reached a creative peak on this 1977 masterpiece, whose second side was entirely devoted to a breathtaking aural recreation of an intercontinental train journey. The first side featured the shimmering beauty of "Europe Endless" alongside the eerie, dislocated vocals of "The Hall Of Mirrors" and "Showroom Dummies," the latter track demonstrating the band's oftenunappreciated sly humour. Representing one of the pinnacles of 70s electronic music, it was a notable irony that the expressionless and mechanistic Kraftwerk went on to become, via Afrika Bambaataa's sampling of "Trans-Europe Express" on his seminal "Planet Rock" single, one of the early pioneers of dance music. Best Of Van Halen, The
Van Halen: David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen, Michael Anthony, Alex Van Halen. Producers: Ted Templeman, Van Halen, Mick Jones, Donn Landee, Andy Johns, Bruce Fairbairn, Glenn Ballard. Engineers: Donn Landee, Erwin Musper. Digitally remastered by Chris Bellman (Bernie Grundman Studios, Los Angeles, California). Almost evenly split between tracks that feature glammy showman David Lee Roth and those that feature earthy screecher Sammy Hagar, BEST OF VOLUME I seems designed to let this pioneering hard-rock band's fans compare and contrast between its two frontmen. Asif to drive the exercise home, BEST OF features three tunes cut in '96--two of them with Roth, who had been estranged from the band since 1985, and one with Hagar ("Humans Being," originally released on the soundtrack to TWISTER). Otherwise, BEST OF presents the hits in chronological order, beginning with the unadorned, aggressive sound of the early Roth material. Powered by guitarist Eddie Van Halen's hammer-on notes and orchestral pyrotechnics, and lightened up by Roth's used-car-salesman-on-a-bender persona, "Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love" and "Runnin' With The Devil" are as close to pure, perfect hard rock as anyone is ever likely to come. The early '80s found the band incorporating synthesizers (played by Eddie) and a pop sensibility, resulting in megahits like "Jump." Things changed again when Hagar replaced Roth and took the band further from its roots, toward an expansive new sound with broader new arrangements, heard here in such pop hits as "Dreams" and "Right Now." Refusing to tip the balance toward either David Lee diehards or Sammy-come-latelys, BEST OF contains enough Van Halen milestones to keep anyone satisfied. SKU: 1002434

Pop - The First 20 Hits
Erasure: Andy Bell (vocals); Vince Clarke (various instruments). Additional personnel: M.C. Kinky (rap vocals); Maurice Michael (guitar); Guy Barker (trumpet). Producers includes: Stephen Hague, Erasure, Gareth Jones, Mark Saunders, Martyn Phillips. Engineers include: Dave Bascombe, Bob Kraushaar, Dave Jacob. A handy 20-tracksingles compilation covering Erasure's first five albums plus the EPs CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL and ABBA-ESQUE and the remix album THE TWO RING CIRCUS, this is a near-perfect way to get acquainted with the duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell. Running in basically chronological order from 1986's "Who Needs Love Like That?" to 1992's "Take a Chance on Me," the collection includes such classic Erasure hits as "Stop!" "Chains of Love," and "Oh L'Amour," in their original single mixes, which are occasionally somewhat different from the album or extended club versions. While this collection is essential for neophytes, it contains no new songs or mixes, and hardcore Erasure fans may find it most useful as a failsafe party album or mix-tape substitute. Later Erasure albums are more melancholy in tone; in retrospect, POP! feels like the closing of a chapter. SKU: 1000115

Mixed Up
Remixes of previously released material plus 1 new song. The Cure includes: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar); Porl Thompson (guitar, keyboards); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Lol Tolhurst (keyboards, drums). Producers: Robert Smith, David M. Allen, Chris Parry, Mark Saunders. Who says The Cure don't have a sense of humor? While The Cure had often struggled with the dichotomy between dancing and moping in an attempt to prove that the two were not incompatible, critics simply smiled at the band's audacity. What did a band of pasty-faced art students from England know about bumping on the dance floor anyway? As it turns out, the band knew quite a bit. While The Cure had not made a pure "dance" record since THE WALK, their albums usually contained a track or two to keep the ol' feet a-tapping. MIXED UP collects, extends and deconstructs several of the Cure's bouncier tracks (and a few surprises) from the latter half of their career. Most of the re-mixes aren't that surprising, "Close to Me" is extended much as one would expect and "The Walk (Everything Mix)" lives up to its name. On the other hand the unlikely "Pictures of You" is re-imagined as a semi-dub track(!) and even the brooding "Fascination Street" turns out to be a lot more upbeat than one might have imagined. With the addition of the strong new track, "Never Enough," The Cure has no trouble rocking the party out. SKU: 1001564

Catalyst [ECD]
On this, their fourth studio album (following on from 2002's 'SticksAnd Stones') the band return to the slightly heavier feel seen on earlier works such as 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' and 'New Found Glory'. As such the band have gone for a more riff-heavy sound rather than the more slick pop sound of 'Sticks And Stones'. It has been called retro by some critics as the band add a more 80's rock feel to their pop-punk sound as heard on the album's lead single 'All Downhill From Here'. SKU: 6558011

Long Sound
The Coctails: B. Norman Phipps (guitar, baritone saxophone, bass); Archer Prewitt (guitar, trumpet, bass, drums); John Upturch (lap steel guitar, alto & tenor saxophones, clarinet); Mark Greenberg (alto saxophone, piano, vibraphone, bass, drums). After assorted releases celebrating Christmas, children's songs and a hybrid of suave stylish attitude wedded to garage rock, The Coctails made this jazz album. The quartet members are multi-instrumentalists who made no secret of their love for jazz on earlier recordings. This time they jump into it whole hog. This is an honest and exuberant set by any measure. The Coctails are joined here by jazz players Ken Vandermark on bass clarinet and Hal Russell on saxophones (who died shortly after these recordings were completed, making this the final document of his playing), as well as Poi Dog Pondering's Dave Crawford on trumpet. The ten relatively short pieces celebrate a healthy range of fifties jazz styles, from West Coast cool to Sun Ra hot. SKU: 1035435

Augusta
Personnel includes: Willie Nelson, Don Cherry (vocals); Jay Orlando (saxophone); Charlie Shaffer (piano). Wondering how in the world Willie Nelson ended up making a record with avant garde jazz great Don Cherry? Wonder no more--the Don Cherry on this album is not the multi-instrumentalist who rose to fame as a sideman to Ornette Coleman. Rather, this disc teams Willie with the crooning fellow Texan who hit the Billboard charts six times in 1955 and 1956, most notably with the wedding standard "Band of Gold." AUGUSTA features Willie and Don singing a number of standards, including "My Way," "Red Sails in the Sunset," "Try a Little Tenderness," and "Prisoner of Love." The title track is a tribute to golf's Masters tournament, held in Augusta, Georgia. Backing arrangements are dominated by synthesizers and drum machines, with the occasional saxophone solo thrown into the mix. The mood on AUGUSTA is mellow; the mix and performancesfall under the 'easy listening' category. SKU: 5053100

Devils And Dust (Parental Advisory/+DVD) [PA]
Thirteenth studio album from The Boss follows 2002's epic, 9/11-inspired 'The Rising'. Continuing his trend of following a hard rocking record with a quiet, introspective one, this album isa more rootsy, acoustic affair, with pedal steel, harmonica and mandolin in the mix, and has a dark, forbidding streak running through the lyrics. Produced once more by Brendan O'Brien (Neil Young, Incubus, Pearl Jam). SKU: 6587314

Saved
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Terry Young (vocals, keyboards); Clydie King, Regina Havis, Mona Lisa Young (vocals); Fred Tackett (guitar); Spooner Oldham (keyboards); Tim Drummond (bass); Jim Keltner (drums); Barry Beckett. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Sheffield, Alabama. Ever the spiritual nomad, the former Robert Zimmerman became a born-again Christian in the late '70s, a development strongly reflected in his work from that period. His second "Christian" album, SAVED celebrates the change just as emphatically as it's predecessor SLOW TRAIN COMING, with Dylan declaring proclaiming his faith in no uncertain terms on the title track. Even when he sings about the opposite sex on "Covenant Woman,"it's a lady who has a "contract with God." Backed by some of the most soulful musicians he's ever recorded with, including Barry Beckett, Spooner Oldham and Jim Keltner, Dylan wrings an unprecedented degree of emotion from his tunes. He even sings the hell out of the old country-identified spiritual "A Satisfied Mind" to open the album. Closing things out, "Are You Ready" finds Dylan (backed by a gospel choir) exhorting the listener to accept Jesus, over a sinuous funk-gospel vamp. SKU: 1012266

Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Mike Pinder (vocals, keyboards); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica); Graeme Edge (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though this 1971 release was issued at a time of enormous commercial success for the Moody Blues, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR contains some of the band's most adventurous music. The band had recentlydiscovered the Moog synthesizer, and its presence is felt on much of the album. The opening "Procession" instantly sets this collection's experimental course, landing like a spacecraft among reams of cascading synthesizer before evolving into a soundscape of cricket chirps, thunderclaps, and tribal chanting. The next three minutes contain one of the most cathartic sonic explorations the band has ever put forth. Other standout tracks include "After You Came," which features tessellated vocal layering and bluesy guitar work; "Emily," a song that John Lodge wrote for his daughter; and the rapturously symphonic "You Can Never Go Home." Stink [Remastered]
The Replacements: Paul Westerberg (vocals, guitar); Bob Stinson (guitar); Tommy Stinson (bass); Chris Mars (drums). Recorded at Blackberry Way, Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 13, 1982. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Like the band's debut, SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH, this follow-up EP pays homage to punk rock by keeping things loud, sloppy, hard and relentlessly paced. Pile-driving rhythms by drummer Chris Mars and bassist Tommy Stinson, screaming leads from guitarist Bob Stinson and the shredded, breathless vocals of Paul Westerberg fuel these slices of white knuckle hardcore. The effect created is the sonic equivalent of a speeding car careening through a wall of burning televisions. The track titles say it all. "Kids Don't Follow," "Fuck School," "Goddamn Job," "Dope Smokin' Moron," and "Gimme Noise" should, in musical execution and thematic orientation, convince any listener beyond a shadow of a doubt of STINK's pure punk ethos. Like their similarly styled contemporaries Husker Du and Soul Asylum, the Replacements grew as musicians and songwriters, with a greater concern formelody, throughout the '80s; STINK is an ear-shaking testament to the band's no nonsense, hardcore roots. Wild The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle, The
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica, recorder); Danny Federici (accordion, keyboards, background vocals); David Sancious (soprano saxophone, keyboards); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, background vocals); Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez (coronet, drums, background vocals); Gary Tallent (tuba, bass, background vocals). Recorded at 914 Sound Studios, Blauvelt, New York. Although Springsteen's world domination has waned noticeably in recent years, he does have a back-catalogue of considerable power. This sleeper contains at least two Springsteen classics in the shape of the lovely '4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)' and the powerful concert encore 'Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)', on which saxophonist Clarence Clemons demonstrated what an asset he is to Springsteen's sound. The album failedto chart when released in 1973, and made the lists during his breakthrough year of 1975. That year, Born To Run turned him into a superstar, and the down-home friendliness that this record had was lost forever. The album's title summed up everything. SKU: 1083082

Titan AE (Music From The Motion Picture)
Including contributions from acts as varied as Lit and Jamiroquai, the TITAN A.E. soundtrack delivers a tasty sampling of new tracks from the best in new alternative rock. NewcomersPowerman 5000's heavy-grinding "The End is Over" is deliciously apocalyptic, while other noteworthy tracks include Electrasy's "Cosmic Castaway" and the Fun-Lovin' Criminals' "Everything Under the Stars." Jamiroquai and Luscious Jackson steal the show on TITAN A.E., however, delivering the goods with "Everybody's Going to the Moon" and "Down to Earth," respectively. Jamirqouai's contribution is a solid groove and instant club hit that is both consciously retro and futuristic, at once reminiscent of early Michael Jackson and the Beastie Boys' HELLO NASTY. Luscious Jackson provide the film and its soundtrack with a beautifully cathartic track that, true to its name, is the most organic cut on the album. Other tracks include songs by Wailing Souls, the Urge, Bliss, Texas, and Splashdown. SKU: 1038741

Surrender To Love
Contains seven untitled hidden tracks following "Freedom". Kindred The Family Soul: Fatin Dantzler, Aja Graydon (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel includes: Ursula Rucker (spoken vocals); James Poyser (various instruments); Doc Gibbs (percussion); King Britt (programming). Producers include: Anthony Bell, Kindred The Family Soul, Elise Perry, David Ivory, Ivan Dupee. From Frank Sinatra to Britney Spears, popular music's most visible figures have often represented Western culture's obsession with youth, physical beauty and the pursuit of short-term romance over committed monogamous relationships. Apparently hoping to reverse the trend, with SURRENDER TO LOVE Kindred The Family Soul delivers what may be the first modern mainstream album to so fully, genuinely. and unpretentiously embrace the concept of hearth, home and family. Using a spare, easy-flowing old school soul duet template of the type employed to great effect by Gaye/Terrel, Flack/Hathaway and Labelle/Womack, Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler sound less like a revival act than a classic thrift-shop find. Lest one think that SURRENDER TO LOVE is a warm-and-fuzzy Christian-pop style affirmation of 7th HEAVEN-esque plastic perfection, Kindred The Family Soul isn't afraid to drag outthe dirty laundry. Few albums celebrate and examine the completely unglamorous minutiae of daily life in such an affecting and creative manner. An amazingly substantive and accomplished debut, the disc serves as a challenge to all other artists to abandon the Hollywood banalities and get down to the nitty-gritty of making art. SKU: 1083893

Sketches Of Spain/Kind Of Blue/In A Silent Way
Additional guest personnel: Wayne Shorter; Chick Corea; Herbie Hancock; Joe Zawinul; John McLaughlin; Dave Holland; Tony Williams. This box combines three of Miles Davis's best releases, but the comparisons end there. While SKETCHES OF SPAIN, KIND OF BLUE, and IN A SILENT WAY are masterpieces, three less similar records would be hard to find in Davis's prolific catalogue. SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the last of Davis's collaborations with the great composer/arranger Gil Evans, and it is as much Evans's album as it is Davis's, as Evans composed three of the album's five tracks and selected the other two. The sound is pure Evans--rich and orchestral even when featuring comparatively few instruments--and features that peculiarly weightless feel of his best work. By comparison, the improvised KIND OF BLUE--featuring "So What," probably Davis's best-known composition--is Spartan where SKETCHES is lush. Even more different is the electric, rock-influenced IN A SILENT WAY, whose side-long "Ssh/Peaceful" became theblueprint for nearly all '70s fusion experiments. SKU: 6576142

Goodbye Cream [Remastered]
Cream: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Jack Bruce (vocals, piano, organ, bass); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: L'Angelo Misterioso [George Harrison] (guitar); Felix Pappalardi (viola, piano, Mellotron, bass). Engineers: Bill Halverson, Adrian Barber, DamonLyon-Shaw. All tracks have been digitally remastered. After less than 3 years in existence, and some 15 million albums sold, GOODBYE was Cream's farewell release. Baker, Bruce and Clapton indicated at the time that they were burned out on the concept, the touring, the improvisational "battles," and each other. The live cuts ("I'm So Glad," "Politician" and "Sitting On Top Of The World") are indicative of how the band's concert chemistry had evolved from earlier live recordings (such as those on WHEELS OF FIRE and LIVE CREAM, VOLUMES 1 & 2). But what's most striking about GOODBYE is the charm and craftsmanship of their last studio tracks, indicating that Cream was far from played out creatively, and illustrating how strong their songwriting skills really were. The Beatles' influence is readily apparent on each studio track, the most famous being Clapton's "Badge," featuring George Harrison. Bruce's "Doin' The Scrapyard Thing," with its mixture of funk and the English music hall, points to the directions he would pursue on SONGS FOR A TAILOR and his other underrated solo albums, while Baker's use of odd meters on "What A Bringdown" anticipates "Do What You Like" on BLIND FAITH. Dandy In The Underworld (Deluxe Edition)
The 1997 reissue of DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD features 5 additional tracks that did not appear on the original release; "To Know You Is To Love You (To Know Him Is To Love Him)," "City Port," "Dandy In The Underworld (Single Version)," "Tame My Tiger" and "Celebrate Summer." Marc Bolan/T.Rex: Marc Bolan (vocals, guitar, bass, percussion); Dino Dines (keyboards, synthesizer); Herbie Flowers (bass); Tony Newman (drums). Additional personnel: Steve Harley (vocals); Miller Anderson (guitar); J. Long (violin); Bud Beadle(flute, baritone saxophone); Steve Gregory (flute); Chris Mercer (tenor saxophone); Scott Edwards, Steve Currie (bass); Paul Humphrey, Davey Lutton, Paul Fenton (drums); Gloria Jones, Colin Jacas, Alfalpha (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Mark Paytress. All tracks have been digitally remastered. T. Rex's final release came out in 1977, when punk emerged like a ragged, safety-pin bedecked David to strike the Goliath of progressive rock square between the eyes with a well-aimed, rough-edged rock. The musical landscape has never been quite the same since. Marc Bolan, always a keen observer of musical trends, was quick to embrace the punk ethos, even declaring himself to be its godfather. But DANDY is no punk record. It's an eclectic set, but all in all, it sounds like T. Rex. "Jason B. Sad" has a "Get it On" flavor, while "I Love to Boogie" has a similar feel to the classic "Jeepster." The title track, a midtempo groover, sports synthesizer textures and slick production. Yet these songs show Bolan's heartfelt commitment to classic chord patterns of '50s rock & roll, as the cover of "To Know Him Is to Love Him" further attests. It's hard to hear the punk influence here: certainly "We love to boogie/on a Saturday night" is a far cry from "I want to be anarchy..." But in an era when rock was becoming increasingly self-important, T. Rex shared the essential punk preference for songs that were fast, simple, and disposable. SKU: 1074240
