Benefit [Remastered]
Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, flute); Martin Barre (electric guitar); John Evans (keyboards); Glenn Cornick (bass); Clive Bunker (drums). Additional personnel: John Evan (piano, organ). Producer: Ian Anderson. Reissue producers: Jo Brooks, Nigel Reeve. Principally recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Ian Anderson. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Tull's third album finds them pulling definitively away fromtheir blues-rock beginnings and heading towards the folk-influenced prog-rock that would become their trademark. It captures a brief, crucial moment in the band's life. They hadn't yet adopted the complex, medieval-oriented approach of their most famous works, but they had progressed enough to record some of Ian Anderson's most unpretentious, personal and affecting songs. Instead of courtly prog-rock or Cream-ish electric blues, BENEFIT is full of visceral, electrified folk-rock. The light, acoustic-flavored "With You There to Help Me" and "Inside" are full of thoughtful passion. The harder-edged "To Cry You a Song" and "Teacher" are examples of Tull's ever-present way with a hooky riff. For those distrustful of fancy time signatures and complex song suites, a strong case could be made for BENEFIT as Tull's most satisfying effort. SKU: 1068211

Recorded at Meac Studio, San Francisco, California; Skywalker Sound, Nicasto, California; and Royal Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Boz Scaggs. COME ON HOME was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. For much of his career, Boz Scaggs has taken the musical path of slick L.A. pop, culminating in his 1976 hit album SILK DEGREES. COME ON HOME brings Scaggs full circle to his first love of R&B and blues for the first time since his earliest recordings. Members of the famed Hi Records house band, Bonnie Raitt's touring band, and Little Feat's Fred Tackett accompany Scaggs in criss-crossing the musical map. COME ON HOME features traditional numbers by Sonny Boy Williamson ("Early In The Morning") and Jimmy Reed ("Found Love"), nuggets from the Stax catalog (the Hayes/Porter classic "Your Good Thing [Is About To End]," and Texas jump blues ("T-Bone Shuffle"), all performed with loving care by this student of soul. Scaggs' originals fit in nicely next to these covers, giving a nod to Charles Brown's stylings ("After Hours") and French bistro ambiance ("Goodnight Louise"), complete with rambling piano and an accompanying squeezebox. Honky Chateau [Remastered]
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, acoustic & electric pianos, organ); Davey Johnstone (guitar, banjo, mandolin, background vocals); Jean-Luc Ponty (electric violin); Gus Dudgeon (whistle, background vocals); Jean-Louis Chautemps, Alain Hatot (saxophone); Ivan Julien (trumpet); Jacques Bolognesi (trombone); David Henschel (A.R.P. synthesizer); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, congas, tambourine, background vocals); Ray Cooper (congas); "Legs" Larry Smith (taps); Madeline Bell, Liza Strike, Larry Steel, Tony Hazzard (background vocals). Recorded at Strawberry Studios, France in January 1972. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. By the time Elton John went to France to cut HONKY CHATEAU in 1972, he had already become the first act since the Beatles to land four albums in the American Top 10 simultaneously. Up to this point, EJ performed in a trio rounded out by Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson. The addition of guitarist Davey Johnstone added another dimension to the overall sound. The results were encouraging, as the nonsensical "HonkyCat" and the Bowie-inspired "Rocket Man" became Reg Dwight's first Top 10 hits since the release of "Your Song" two years prior. Other notable songs include the rollicking "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" (featuring the tap-dancing contributions of the Bonzo Dog Band's "Legs" Larry Smith), the sassy "Susie (Dramas)" and the stirring "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters." The Elton John/Bernie Taupin partnership also yielded a number of songs with vivid imagery including the Civil War-era American South of "Slave" and a front-row pew before a gospel choir in the inspirational "Salvation." Taupin also tipped his hat to EJ's childhood by writing about his friend's childhood nickname (the joyous "Hercules"). SKU: 1003114

Blood Money
Contains an untitled hidden track following "A Good Man Is Hard To Find". Personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ, calliope, chamberlain); Larry Taylor (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Joe Gore (electric guitar); Dawn Harms (violin); Matt Brubeck (cello, bass); Colin Stetson (clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Don Plonsey (clarinet); Bebe Risenfors (bass clarinet, accordion, saxophone); CharlieMusselwhite (harmonica); Nik Phelps (trumpet, tuba); Ara Anderson (trumpet); Gino Robair (marimba, bongos, timpani, gong, bells); Andrew Borger (marimba); Stewart Copeland (drums, log drums); Casy Waits, Bent Clausen (drums). Engineers include: Oz Fritz, Jacquire King, Jeff Sloan. Recorded at In The Pocket Studios, Forestville, California. Like the simultaneously released ALICE, BLOOD MONEY features songs written for a Robert Wilson play. That's pretty much where the similarity ends; unlike ALICE's moody balladry, BLOOD MONEY is full of crazed, rhythmic pieces of sonic barbed-wire. The lyrics portray the main character of Wilson's WOYZECK, a man filled with madness and rage. The combination of junkyard percussion, near-psychotic vocals, and lounge-band-from-hell tones provides the perfect complement. The outlook is an unremittingly dark one, eventually bypassing existentialism ("God's Away on Business") in favor of outright misanthropy (the aptly titled "Misery is the River of the World"). The brief, Raymond Scott-like instrumental "Knife Chase" is a madcap interlude that brings the glory days of SWORDFISHTROMBONES to mind. Despite the gusto with which Waits throws himself into all this craziness, a couple of sadly romantic ballads provide a brief respite from the mayhem and make the rest of BLOOD MONEY feel all the more hard-hitting in contrast. Arrival
Journey: Steve Augeri (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar, background vocals); Jonathan Cain (keyboards, background vocals); Ross Valory (bass, background vocals); Deen Castronovo (drums, background vocals). Engineers: Aya Takemura, Kevin "Spank" Shirley. Recorded at The Plant Recording Studios, Sausalito, California, Avatar Studios and The Cave, New York, New York. Arena rock veterans Journey must have felt the pressure to meet and hopefully surpass expectations on their first studio album without Steve Perry. The choice of his successor and what the band could offer without him had been the subjects of argument and speculation for some time. Journey's ARRIVAL fits the bill comfortably and triumphantly. While it doesn't rock as hard as TRIAL BY FIRE, the songwriting is top notch, and producer Kevin Shirley continues to bring out the best in the bands he works with. Former Tall Stories/Tyketto vocalist Steve Augeri steps into some very big shoes and delivers emotive, soaring vocals on ballads such as "All the Way" and "All the Things." Rockers "Higher Place" and "We Will Meet Again" are in the minority, but are sure to please long time fans. New drummer Deen Castronovo puts his chops on a leash and shows his ability to be a true ensemble player. An obvious single, "Signs of Life" sounds as close to the Journey spirit as the band can get without Perry, while the smoldering "Kiss Me Softly" shows that the new Journey has a few acesup its collective sleeve. Million Dollar Hotel
Producers include: Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Hal Willner, Bono, Flood. Compilation producer: Hal Willner. The soundtrack to this Wim Wenders-directed film about a hotel that plays host to rich mental patients features material by Bono (the co-author of the original story) with and without U2. The disc was produced by Hal Willner, and much of the music is played by the Million Dollar Hotel Band (whose members include Bono, Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and Bill Frisell). The resulting musical palette is dark and sweeping. U2, which began dabbling in electronica in the early '90s, contributes a handful of subtle electronica gems. "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" (featuring lyrics by Salman Rushdie and ghostly pedal steel by Lanois), the slow-burning and sensual "The First Time," and the ethereal "Stateless," which is goosed along by Danny Saber's sound effects. Elsewhere, the MDH Band maintains the shadowy mood moving from Chet Baker-inspired vibes ("Bathtub," "Tom Tom's Dream") to providing a Mazzy Star-like bed behind Milla Jovovich's whispered reading of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love." The only ripple in this sea of musical tranquillity is TitoLarriva's brilliant Spanish-language reworking of "Anarchy in the UK," re-titled "Anarchy in the USA." SKU: 1029859

Hurrah
Versus: James Baluyut, Richard Baluyut, Patrick Ramos, Fontaine Toups. From its early days on the Teenbeat label to its debut on the more jagged Merge, Versus has evolved a more poppy, more palatable sound. HURRAH, the New York City four piece's sixth release, shifts styles ably from song to song, avoiding the saccharine pitfalls which frequently befall other indie-pop contenders. From the Fairport Convention folk meets basic indie guitar rock of "My Adidas" to the kitchen sink jangle-pop/Fugazi-style madness/breakbeat of "Eskimo," an unpredictable comfort zone prevails on HURRAH. As usual, Richard Blalayut trades vocals with Fontaine Toups, and while the male/female switch-off is somewhat of a cliche in indie-rock circles, these two are an almost ideal pairing. Toups' vocals slide smoothly, contentedly, and breathily over the sonic landscapes, while Blalayut gilds his folksy affability with a Thurston Moore-ish off-kilter howl. What ensues is a thoroughly enjoyable, polished pop record with hints of unpretentious genius. HURRAH hits a moment of purest pop brilliance with the spirited, somber piano-bar balladry of "Walkabout."With HURRAH, Versus continues its path towards the perfect pop song. SKU: 1052500

MCMLXXXV
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Rufio: Scott Sellers (vocals, guitar); Clark Domae (guitar, background vocals); Jon Berry (bass, background vocals); Mike Jimenez (drums). Recorded at Grandmaster Studios, Hollywood, California between February & March 2003. Those outside the inner circle of emo/punk fandom might be daunted by the seemingly endless supply of West Coast bands who've sprung up in that genre in the early '00s. However those who delight in punk energy married to pop hooks and earnest emotion will delight in Rufio's explosion into the mainstream after a couple of albums. 1985 (inconveniently expressed on the album cover in Roman numerals) presents a band that's tighter than the proverbial drum and full of vitality and passion. On such tracks as the propulsive, intricately riff-laden "Science Fiction" and the frenzied, full-on "Why Wait?" the proud men of Rufio broadcast their mix of punk and pop with the kind of emotionalcommitment that quickly makes hardcore fans out of innocent bystanders. Down On The Upside
Soundgarden: Chris Cornell (vocals, guitar, mandolin, mandola, Fender Rhodes electric piano); Kim Thayil (guitar); Ben Shepherd (mandolin, mandola, bass); Matt Cameron (Moog synthesizer, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Adam Kasper (piano). Recorded at Studio Litho and Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington. "Pretty Noose" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. They still come armed with their trademark guitar rumble and Chris Cornell's bellowing vocals. But once again, as on 1994's SUPERUNKNOWN, Soundgarden use their Led Zeppelin rootsand Black Sabbath might as springboards toward melodic structure and instrumental experimentation not normally associated with bands this heavy. DOWN ON THE UPSIDE begins with "Pretty Noose," a swirling magma of guitar tones not unlike those generated by fellow Seattlites Alice In Chains. But Soundgarden avoids the typical grunge ruts. Guitarist Kim Thayil pulls out a mandolin a couple of times; on "Ty Cobb," he begins by noodling innocuously on it but works up to furious soloing. Soundgarden's punk roots show on that song and on "Never Named," but on other tracks the band shows its subtlety. "Applebite," which features drummer Matt Cameron on a Moog synthesizer, is eerie and disembodied. On "Overfloater," Thayil's low-key electric-guitar phrasing and Cornell's electric piano provide billowy tones and dreamy textures before the heavy crunch hits home. SKU: 5048406

Unauthorised Biography Of Reinhold Messner, The
Ben Folds Five: Ben Folds (vocals, piano); Robert Sledge (bass, background vocals); Darren Jessee (drums, background vocals). Additionalpersonnel: Antoine Silverman, Mark Feldman, Lorenza Ponce (violin); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Ken Mosher (alto & baritone saxophones); Tom Maxwell, Paul Shapiro (tenor saxophone); Frank London (trumpet); John Mark Painter (flugelhorn, valve trombone). Recorded at Sound City Studios and Grandmaster Studios, Los Angeles, California; Water Music, Hoboken, New Jersey; RPM Studios, New York, New York. When Ben Folds and his oddly-named trio crashed the guitar-heavy grunge party dominating the early part of the '90s, he did so by melding unerring pop sensibilities with acerbic lyrics. REINHOLD MEISSNER finds Folds using more orchestrations on a record full of pop confections that was unknowingly named for the first man to climb Mt. Everest without an oxygen tank. "Don't Change Your Plans" includes a flugelhorn section reminiscent of any classic Bacharach/David composition, whereas the slightly more uptempo "Mess" carries a breeziness that has Elton John's influence all over it. Folds avoids filling REINHOLD solely with such nakedly emotive numbers like "Magic" and "Hospital Song" by fiercely rocking the '88s. The semi-autobiographical "Army" bubbles over with Robert Sledge's unmistakable fuzz bass and help from the Squirrel Nut Zipper's horn section. Folds throws in a semi-rap and electronic sound effects to poke fun at his southern upbringing in "Your Redneck Past" and uses an answering machine message left by his dad as the vocal track for the coffee-house jazz of "Your Most Valuable Possession." Folds wraps everything up with the mid-tempoed "Lullabye," a song whose combination of orchestral arrangements and soulful piano playing bring to mind Ray Charles. SKU: 1004783

Paul Weller
Personnel: Paul Weller (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion); Jacko Peake (flute, saxophone, background vocals); Steve White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Brother Marco (bass); Dr. Robert (bass, background vocals); Dee C. Lee, Camelle Hinds, Carlene Anderson (background vocals). Producers: Paul Weller, Brendan Lynch, Chris Bangs. Engineers: Martin Heyes, Paul Gumersall, Robin Black. Weller's first solo album is stylistically of a piece with his earlier work with the Style Council, which is to say that there's a '60s soul feel to it but it also reflects his passion for various '60s English bands, primarily Traffic. Soul-flavored songs like "Remember How We Started" and "Above the Clouds" are virtual tributes to Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, but the rest of the album tilts, quite attractively, towards a sort of pastoral, psychedelic R&B reminiscent ofTraffic's classic MR. FANTASY. SKU: 1004985

Addictions Vol.1
ADDICTIONS gathers a goodly chunk of indispensable singles and outstanding album cuts from Robert Palmer's Island Records tenure in the '70s and '80s, as well as his last smash, "Simply Irresistible," and Power Station's "Some Like it Hot." The set balances some of the biggest hits with songs that are less familiar but no less compelling. People who caught up with Palmer in the '80s will appreciate early tunes like the stellar "Every Kinda People." A number of songs have seen some post-production polishing, but still remain sonically faithful to the originals, though a radically reworked version of the tricky "Woke Up Laughing" emphasizes a wholly new rhythm scheme. Sandwiched between hits like a remixed "Bad Case of Loving You" and Palmer's Number Onesmash, "Addicted to Love" is the hypnotic title track from "Pride," which demonstrates the singer's facility with African rhythms. Selected Ambient Works Vol.2
The songs on SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS VOL. 2 have no titles. Aphex Twin: Richard James (various instruments). Very occasionallyin music, something will come at you from so far out on the left field, that not only do you not note its immediate import, you scarcely recognize it as music at all. This is the record that cemented the media's fascination with Richard James, a Cornwall bedroom DJ. Selected Ambient Works is not an entirely representative recording, as these are essentially mood pieces, unlike the more instantaneous, dancefloor-targeted material that originally brought him to the nation's attention. Nevertheless if you are prepared to make the journey, and can see past the album's intimidating length and its lack of linear framework, there are some exquisite moments - ranging in texture from melodic delirium to sweeping melancholy. Santa Barbara
The High Llamas: Sean O'Hagan (guitar, mandolin, keyboards, vocals); Anita Visser (guitar, mandolin, vocals); Marcus Holdaway (cello, keyboards, background vocals); John Fell (bass); Tom Fenner (drums, background vocals); Daniel Strittmayer (drums). Additional personnel: Suzanne Allen, Paul Kirby (violin); Charlie Francis (background vocals). Producers: Sean O'Hagan, Charlie Francis, The High Llamas, Marc Pringle. Recorded at Bang Bang Studios and The Stone Room, London, England. The High Llamas' 1992 debut, originally released only in France (though half of the album's songs had appeared on a British EP, APRICOTS, in 1991), is by far the band's most song-oriented album. Downplaying the country-ish tinge of many songs on leader Sean O'Hagan's 1990 solo album, HIGH LLAMAS, SANTA BARBARA consists of nine stand-alone songs, most inthe four-to-five minute range, lacking the segues and instrumental interludes of later Llamas releases. O'Hagan has called this "my guitar-pop album." While his guitars take a more prominent role here than on later albums, the songs are actually built on multi-hued layers of keyboards, accented with strings, mandolins, and the lighter-than-air backing vocals of soon-to-depart guitarist Anita Visser. The highlights are the gently mocking "Period Music" and the beautifully atmospheric "Apricots," but every song is a small gem. SKU: 1011798

Gentlemen Take Polaroids [Remastered]
Japan: David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Rob Dean (guitar); Richard Barbieri (keyboards); Mick Karn (saxophone, bass); Steve Jansen (drums). Engineers include: Nigel Walker, Colin Fairley, Steve Prestage. Recorded at Air Studios and The Townhouse Studios, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Japan's fourth album is a study in serious mood development, made even more so with the inclusion of the instrumental b-side, "The Experience of Swimming." Japan's subtle mixture of spidery guitars, lush saxophones, and elastic bass is fleshed out with David's Sylvian's effortless vocals and some truly classy synthesizer work that, somehow, doesn't seem to have dated. Mick Karn pulls double duty with the sax and bass and, as usual, his work is what grounds the band--for proof, see "My New Career" or "Taking Islands in Africa." Among the standout tracks, "Burning Bridges" borrows more than a few notions from the collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno, but nevertheless manages to present a beautiful soundscape that is fresh and dynamic. With a phrase from one song becoming the title of another,Sylvian's lyrics are more oblique than usual. These interrelations don't seem to lead anywhere, but that is hardly the point--much of the time, he seems more interested in how the words sound than what they say. The record also includes a wonderfully infectious cover of the Marvin Gaye classic, "Ain't That Peculiar." This is the modern-rock version of smoky, late-night jazz. SKU: 1087382

Sandy
Sandy Salisbury was part of '60s psych-pop group the Millennium, a band spearheaded by sunshine pop wunderkind Curt Boettcher (famed for his work with the Association). In 2000, England's Poptones label took it upon themselves to release solo material by Boettcher, Salisbury, and Millennium mate Joey Stec (as well as some previously unheard Millennium material). SANDY, recorded 1967-'69, didn't see the light of day until this 21st-Century CD issue, and itarrives like a glorious time capsule full of sonic flower-power richness. The personnel here is much the same as on the Boettcher disc, including other Millennium members, and the basic Beach Boys-ish pop aesthetic is similar (Salisbury tackles the Brian/Carl Wilson-penned "On and On She Goes"). There's also a distinct touch of country to a couple of tunes: "The Hills of Montreal" could be a lost Burrito Bros. track, and Red Rhodes adds homey pedal steel to the opening "I Just Don't Know How to Say Goodbye." Despite the fact that Boettcher's the producer, there's less psychedelia and more straightforward pop on SANDY, consistently melodic and expertly arranged and performed. SKU: 1047026

Manilow Vol.2
The 1996 rerelease of BARRY MANILOW II includes one previously unreleased track. Personnel: Barry Manilow (vocals, piano); Dickie Frank, John Barranco, Bob Mann, Charlie Brown, Stuart Scharf, Sam Brown (guitar); George Young, Artie Kaplan, Stan Schwartz (saxophone); Don Grolnick, Ellen Starr (piano); Jon Stroll (electric piano, Clavinet); Bob Cranshaw (acoustic bass); Will Lee, Russell George (bass); Christopher Parker, Jimmy Young, Bill Lavorgna, Allen Schwartzberg (drums); Norman Pride (congas, percussion); Lee Gurst (percussion); Ron Dante (background vocals). Engineers: Bruce Tergesen, Harry Maslin, Michael DeLugg. Recorded at The Hit Factory and Media Sound Studios, New York, New York. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by WallyTraugott (tower Mastering/Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California). Manilow's second album was essentially the one that defined him, at least in the eyes of the public at large. This is mostly due to the inclusion of "Mandy," Manilow's first megahit, and still one of his signature tunes. The romantic, introspective balladry also extended to such tunes as "Early Morning Strangers," and provided the archetype for '70s AM soft-pop. Meanwhile, "Avenue C" and "It's a Miracle" show that Manilow had a way with uptempo material as well. The grand-scale arrangements help push the tunes over the top, which is where they were destined to go, and Manilow's boy-next-door vocal style provides the intimacy that was a key ingredient of his early success. Dark Horse
Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitars), Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, Mick Jones, Alvin Lee, Ron Wood (guitars), Tom Scott (horns, flute), Jim Horn, Chuck Findley (flute), Roger Kellaway, Nicky Hopkins, Gary Wright (piano), Billy Preston (electric piano), Gub Gubi (Moog), Max Bennett, Willie Weeks, Klaus Voorman (bass), John Guerin, Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, Andy Newmark (drums), Lon and Derek Van Eaton (background vocals). All songs written by George Harrison except "Bye Bye Love" (Felice & Boudleaux Bryant) and "Far East Man" (Harrison/Ron Wood). George Harrison's only North American tour was in support of this album, which included the singles "Dark Horse" and "Ding Dong; Ding Dong." Critics, who may have been scared off by an opening track called "Hari's On Tour (Express)," were not amused. No doubt they were hoping to hear George, not Hari, on tour. But the album has its pleasures, such as the prodigious pop hook of "Ding Dong; Ding Dong," which isn't nearly as silly a song as its title would have you believe, and nifty little album tracks like "Far East Man." Soap-opera fans are directed to "Bye Bye Love," which is about his wife, Patti, and his best friend, EricClapton. Clapton, for those keeping score, had previously expressed his love for Patti on "Layla." Later, he would marry her. SKU: 1069348
