Ambulance Ltd.
Debut album from New York band whose droning, shimmering guitarsand knack for a hooky pop tune have seen them compared to My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Teenage Fanclub. Bracketed with the "nu-gazing" movement alongside bands such as Oceansize and Engineers, who resurrect the sound of the 90s shoegazing scene, they have been hotly tipped in the press as a name to watch. Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Full performer name: Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention. The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Roy Estrada (vocals, bass); Ian Underwood (alto saxophone); Bunk Gardner (tenor saxophone); Motorhead Sherwood (baritone saxophone); Buzz Gardner (trumpet, flugelhorn); Don Preston (piano, organ); Jimmy Carl Black,Arthur Dyer Tripp III (drums). Additional personnel: Ray Collins (vocals); Lowell George (guitar, background vocals); Don "Sugar Cane" Harris (electric violin, background vocals). WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH is a collection of live and studio tracks representing different aspects of The Mothers Of Invention's work from 1967-1969. Digitally remastered in 1989. Once attracted by the irresistibly sinister Neon Park album cover illustration, the new owner has to play it. And once again, unless you are already familiar with this wacky genius, the results can be challenging. From the perplexing Germanic interlude of the opener, 'Didja Get Any Onya?', to the complex xylophone changes of 'The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue', Zappa's music should always have been played loud. As background music at a normal volume it serves only to irritate, except for almost normal rock tracks, such as the interpretation of Little Richard's 'Directly From My Heart To You'. It ends with some brilliant free-form something or other. All this was 25 years before Pat Metheny's Zero Tolerence For Silence. SKU: 1014538

Real Thing, The
Faith No More: Michael Patton (vocals); Jim Martin (guitar); Roddy Bottum (keyboards); Bill Gould (bass); Mike Bordin (drums). Engineers: Matt Wallace, Jim "Watts" Vereecke, Craig Doubet. Up until Faith No More's third release, 1989's THE REAL THING, the San Francisco quintet was considered too eccentric for rock's mainstream. Unlike other bands of the era,FNM refused to be limited to just one musical style--the group was indeed heavy, but it also touched upon many other styles (alternative, rap, Middle Eastern, punk, funk, jazz, etc.). But prior to the writing and recording of the album, the band parted ways with its longtime singer, Chuck Mosely, and hired newcomer Mike Patton. Unlike his predecessor, Patton was a very talented and versatile vocalist who could easily adapt to any of the different musical styles his new bandmates threw at him. While it took a few months for sales to crest, THE REAL THING went on to become the group's much sought-after commercial breakthrough. The rap-metal anthem "Epic" was a surprise Top-10 smash (pushing the album to multi-platinum status), while such other tracks as "From Out of Nowhere," "Falling to Pieces," "Zombie Eaters," and "Underwater Love" were just as exceptional. Although the band had been waiting years for mainstream success, FNM decided to challenge its newly acquired pop audience with its next release. SKU: 6421381

Janet.
Personnel: Janet Jackson, Kathleen Battle (vocals); Chuck D (rap vocals); The Flow, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (various instruments, programming); Dave Barry, Frank Stribling (guitar); David Eiland (alto saxophone); Kenneth Holmen (tenor saxophone); Bernie Edstrom, Robert Hallgrimson, Steve Wright, Jeff Gottwig (trumpet); Steven Pikal (trombone); Larry Waddell (Hammond organ); Jimmy Wright (keyboards, background vocals); Mark Haynes (bass, drum programming); Stokley (drums); Jossie Harris, Tina Landon, Ann Nesby, Jamecia Bennett, Core Cotton, Marie Graham, Jeff Taylor (background vocals); Sounds Of Blackness. Producers: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson, Jellybean Johnson. Recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Edina, Minnesota. Janet Jackson's performance of "That's The Way Love Goes" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female." "That's The Way Love Goes" (Janet Jackson/James Harris III/Terry Lewis) won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Song." With JANET, the crown princess of the Jackson family steps out from behind her carefully buffed image to create a sensual new musical persona for herself. Producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis play cat and mouse with modern R&B forms by juxtaposing classic Motown samples (the Supremes on "You Want This" and "If") and Jackson 5 harmonies against slamming dance grooves, as echoes of girl group innocence crash head on with Janet's willful sexuality (to particular effect on ballads like "Where Are You Now" and "The Body That Loves You"). Janet Jackson's ambition rises to the level of her talent on a number of JANET's songs. On "This Time" a tender acoustic overture (punctuated by Kathleen Battle's elegant operatic soprano)gives way to a dark dance track and tales of love gone sour, while her moaning hyperventilations on "Throb" would give Donna Summer pause, as Janet imparts a sleek hip-hop aura to the traditional disco groove. Elsewhere JANET mixes and matches different genres with grace and good humor, from the Stax/Volt country funk of "What'll I Do," to the jitterbugging dance lines of "Funky Big Band" and the stand-up-and-be-proud shouts of "New Agenda." JANET backs away ever so slightly from the hard dance grooves that originally cemented her reputation, to focus instead on her emerging depth as a ballad singer and canny pop-diva. SKU: 1000958

Countdown To Extinction (Remastered & Expanded)
Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar); Marty Friedman (guitar, background vocals); David Ellefson (bass, background vocals); Nick Menza (drums, background vocals). Recorded at The Enterprise, Burbank, California from January 6 to April 28, 1992. Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar); Marty Friedman (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); David Ellefson (bass instrument, background vocals); Nick Menza (drums, background vocals). Recording information: The Enterprise, Burbank California (1992). Megadeth achieved massive success with its aggressive fourth album, RUST IN PEACE, and its follow-up, 1992's COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION, combined the band's trademark thrash metal with hints of the more mainstream territory that would be further charted on the subsequent YOUTHANASIA. However, on COUNTDOWN, Megadeth never sacrifices its characteristic crunch. "Symphony of Destruction" and "Skin O' My Teeth" boast a slightly streamlined sound, but the anger, sarcasm, and signature snarl of frontman Dave Mustaine remain wholly intact. By this time, many major thrash groups had started slowing things down a bit,and Megadeth showed it could be just as powerful doing mid-tempo rockers as it could with high-velocity barnstormers. As always, Mustaine's dark lyrics tackle a range of personal, social, and political topics, the former best exemplified by the multi-faceted "Sweating Bullets," which features Mustaine carrying on a dialogue with his own tortured psyche. Murda Muzik
Mobb Deep: Havoc, Prodigy. Additional personnel: Kool G. Rap, Big Noyd, Eightball, Cormega, Chinky, Lil' Cease, Raekwon, Nas, 8-Ball, Lil' Kim (vocals); Def Jam Blaster (scratches). Producers include:Havoc, The Alchemist, Epitome Shamello Buddah, Prodigy, Jonathan "Lighty" Williams. Engineers include: Steve Sola, Jonathan Williams, T-Mix. Recorded at Soundtrack Studios and The Cutting Room, New York, New York; Urban House Studios, Houston, Texas. MURDAH MUZIK is the forth album from Queensbridge (Queens NY) natives Mobb Deep. Known for street anthems like "Shook Ones Pt. II" and "Survival of the Fittest," Havoc and Prodigy seem every bit as inspired here as they do on earlier recordings. Tracks like "What's Ya Poison (featuring Cormega)," "I'm Going Out (featuring Lil' Cease)," and "Can't Fuck Wit (featuring Raekwon)" show why Mobb Deep's street reputation is as good as it gets. The album also features "Quiet Storm," both the regular and remix versions of which feature Lil' Kim; and an appearance from Kool G Rap on "The Realest," where G Rap shows why he's long been known as a supreme lyricist. Other standouts are "Thug Muzik," "U.S.A. (Alright Then)," and "Let a Ho Be a Ho." SKU: 5064611

East Broadway Run Down
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 9, 1966. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson. For Sonny Rollins, the 1960s were a period of consolidation and revolution as he refined his own concepts and reacted to the flurry of events around him. In taking stock of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp, Sonny formulated a series of fascinating responses, from the elegant, mainstream approach of THE BRIDGE to his free-form safaris into the underbrush of open-ended group improvisation with Don Cherry (ON THE OUTSIDE). EAST BROADWAY RUNDOWN is the apotheosis of this period, one of Sonny Rollins most powerful recordings. Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones (late of Coltrane's band) fire each of these performances with an elemental energy. Meanwhile, the relaxed andextremely confident Sonny responds with some of his most charged improvisations, abstract and exploratory, yet lyrical and supremely bluesy. The title tune begins with an angular, fragmented blues vamp. As Garrison and Jones lock into a multi-layered 4/4 groove, Rollins sculpts in space, lagging way behind the beat with heraldic recitatives and coy snippets of the theme, teasing Jones into one rhythmic climax after another in the manner of Monk and Lester Young. Freddie Hubbard responds to Rollins' thematic parries with fierce, bluesy counterpunches, and following free solo passages from Garrison and Jones, they proceed with free textural exchanges over a hypnotic rhythm vamp. After this epic romp, Sonny (sans Freddie) jumps headfirst into the ancestral blues figures of "Blessing In Disguise" with garrulous, preaching energy. "We Kiss In A Shadow" (from "The King And I") is among his most touching ballads, moving from a tender Afro-Cuban head to a slow grinding shuffle, as Sonny deconstructs the melody with rhapsodic elan. Marigold Sky
Hall & Oates: Daryl Hall (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, percussion programming); John Oates (vocals, acoustic guitar). Additional personnel: Dave Bellochio (acoustic guitar, keyboards, percussion programming); T-Bone Wolk (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Ken Sebesky (acoustic & electric guitars); Dave Stewart (electric guitar); Charlie DeChant (saxophone); Shawn Pelton (drums, percussion); Peter Moshay (percussion). Producers: Daryl Hall, Dave Bellochio, John Oates. Engineers: Peter Moshay, Dave Bellochio, Frank Filipetti. Recorded at A-Pawling Studios, Pawling, New York; Marion Recording Studios, Fairview, New Jersey; Edison Studios, New York, New York. Hall & Oates, once synonymous with trendsetting, radio-friendly eighties pop music, join forces again after years of mostly solo experimentation. The result is an exciting comeback album of pure pop which is occasionally reminiscent of the duo's best early-eighties hits, but which also incorporates new sounds. Check out the exotic, Indian-influenced percussion on "Marigold Sky," Dave Stewart's Eurythmic-style wailing guitar on"Romeo is Bleeding" and "Love Out Loud," and the hints of hip-hop rhythms scattered throughout. This is Hall & Oates nineties style, turning their smooth, soul-flavored harmonies in a more contemporary direction. The lyrics of "Time Won't Pass Me By" seem especially appropriate: "I think the sun was in my eyes/This time the time won't pass me by/Lucky on the second try/This time the time won't pass me by." Innuendo
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, keyboards); Brian May (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Roger Taylor (vocals, keyboards, drums, percussion); John Deacon (bass, keyboards). Recorded at Metropolis Studios, London, England and Mountain Studios, Montreaux, Switzerland. INNUENDO would turn out to be Queen's swan song, as it was the last album released during vocalist Freddie Mercury's lifetime--he passed away several months after the album's release. Expanding on the successful back-to-basics sound of 1989's THE MIRACLE, INNUENDO was another solid outing. And like it's predecessor, it contains several tracks with lyrics that are clearly autobiographical for the band and especially Mercury, particularly "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "The Show Must Go On," which deal withthe topic of mortality. Not all of INNUENDO deals with serious topics, however--"I'm Going Slightly Mad" and "Delilah" both contain humorous lyrics and were designed to be taken lightheartedly. The epic title track, which opens the album, is an instant Queen classic on first listen, built similarly in structure to past Queen classics "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Somebody to Love." A pair of wonderful hard rockers, "The Hitman" and "Headlong" can be found on INNUENDO, as can a couple of lush ballads--"Don't Try So Hard" and "Bijou." Looking back, Queen went out on a definite high note with INNUENDO. SKU: 1006116

Violent Femmes
The Violent Femmes: Gordon Gano (vocals, guitar, violin); Brian Ritchie (acoustic & electric basses, xylophone, background vocals); Victor DeLorenzo (drums, tranceaphone, background vocals). Recorded at Castle Studios, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in July 1982 and Music Works Studios, London, England on August 31 & September 1, 1983. A band with a surfeit of natural charm, the Violent Femmes can also boast of a prodigious back catalogue of easily accessible, effortlessly original songs. And this is the best place to start. Their ramshackle Milwaukee hillbilly punk is complemented by Gordon Gano's geek with attitude lyrics, by turns hilarious and tragic, often within a few lines. Sample the emotional simplicity of 'Kiss Off' or 'Please Do Not Go'. Unlike so many of their contemporaries, you feel nobody else on the planet could have written or performed something like 'Gone Daddy Gone', which single-handedly redefines the essential elements of a great pop song (imagine BrianWilson writing his surf instrumentals on a xylophone). 2 Fast And 2 Furious [PA]
Original score composed by David Arnold. The initial FAST & FURIOUS movie was a fast-cars flick featuring Vin Diesel. 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS is a rather different affair, starring R&B singer Tyrese. Accordingly, the film's soundtrack is a contemporary urban endeavor full of hard-hitting but accessible hip-hop tracks from a variety of popular artists. There are a passel of top rappers, including Ludacris("Act a Fool"), Fat Joe ("We Ridin'"), and Lil' Flip ("Rollin' On 20's"). Naturally, the R&B side of things is represented as well, by the likes of K'Jon (the smoothly understated "Miami") and of course Tyrese Himself (the scene-setting jumper "Pick up the Phone"), with assists from Ludacris and none other than R. Kelly). SKU: 1083919

Hot Rocks Vol.2 (More Hot Rocks/Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) [SACD] [Remastered]
Full title: More Hot Rocks (Big Hits And Fazed Cookies). This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (various instruments, guitar); Mick Taylor (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel includes: John Lennon, Paul McCartney (background vocals). Producers: Andrew Loog Oldham, The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Miller. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When you're anthologizing the Rolling Stones, one of the first things you must accept is the fact that you're doomed to failure. No one album can possibly tell the story ofthe band that's explored so many different musical avenues and recorded so many memorable songs. Credit where credit's due; HOT ROCKS, and this, its sequel, come perilously close. This set wisely doesn't attempt to be comprehensive. Instead, it just picks out various gems from different points in the band's development. Their R&B/roots period is well-represented by covers of "It's All Over Now" and "Not Fade Away." "She's A Rainbow" and "2000 Light Years From Home" are monuments to the bands psychedelic phase. "No Expectations" and "Let It Bleed" are bluesy tunes that cut to the quick, emphasizing the Stones' gift for visceral compositions. SKU: 1076818

Producer: Norman Granz. Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Includes liner notes by Jon Schapiro. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Jazz Masters series. With the Jazz Masters series, Verve appears to have improved somewhat on its early Parker reissues in the Compact Jazz series. Still, JAZZ MASTERS 15 follows the same formula as COMPACT JAZZ. Verve attempts to provide a general overview of Parker's breadth as expressed in his recordings for producer Norman Granz over the last six or seven years of Parker's life. Most of the small group material, recorded in the early '50s, was collected at one point on a pair of Verve LPs, NOW'S THE TIME and SWEDISH SCHNAPPS (both subsequently reissued on CD). "An Oscar for Treadwell" and "My Melancholy Baby" date from a 1947 session with Dizzy Gillespie, TheloniousMonk, Curly Russell, and Buddy Rich. Like Verve's other Parker collections, JAZZ MASTERS 15 includes a couple of cuts from CHARLIE PARKER WITH STRINGS and rounds things out with a Neal Hefti big band cut on which Bird sat in, something Latin from the MACHITO JAZZ session, and a lengthy JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC jam with Howard McGee, Lester Young, and others. The material is all first-rate Parker. Just be aware of the many overlaps among these Verve CDs. SKU: 1004899

Ballads
Personnel includes: Lou Rawls, Dianne Reeves (vocals); Richard Tee, Cornell Dupree, Stanley Turrentine, Hand Crawford, David Fathead Newman, Joe Lovano, Bobby Hutcherson. BALLADS is culled from three separate albums Lou Rawls recorded for Blue Note between 1989 and 1992. Stylistically and sonically it's utterly consistent, which is a tribute both to Rawls' superior vocals and producer Michael Cuscuna's vision (the small band he recruited for all three albums, including the great pianist Richard Tee, could hardly have been bettered). In any case, Rawls is in top form throughout. His readingsof blues ballads associated with Big Joe Turner ("Chains of Love"), Etta James ("At Last"), Dinah Washington ("This Bitter Earth"), and his old friend Jesse Belvin ("Good Night My Love") are to all intents definitive. In Blue
This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Additional personnel: Anthony Drennan (guitar); Keith Duffy (bass). Producers: Robert John "Mutt" Lange, The Corrs, Mitchell Froom. Recorded at Westland Studio and Windmill Lane Studio, Dublin, Ireland. "Breathless" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. "Rebel Heart" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Those who revere the sunny female harmonies of classic pop groups like Abba but want something more contemporary-sounding and danceable will find just what they're looking for in the music of the Corrs. Every song on IN BLUE is an airy pop confection held aloft by bubbling synths, reverberant guitars, and of course, the heavenly vocals of the Corr sisters. It's a well-established pop phenomenon that siblings get that extra something special when harmonizing with each other (a fact that goes all the way back to the Everly Brothers). That's certainly true here, but the Corrs take it a step further, as their instrumental abilities intertwine with equal alacrity, especially in the case of guitarist/keyboardist Jim Corr. The whole package is toppedoff by some production assistance from pop maestro "Mutt" Lange, who puts the final, seamless sonic touches on this instantly appealing album. SKU: 1036857
