Widely considered one of Tangerine Dream's masterworks, fallout from the sonic phenomenon that is PHAEDRA can still be found lingering in the ambient movement of the early '90s and in much of contemporary electronica. The aural architecture that the band built from scratch remains unparalleled. Tangerine Dream was truly ahead of its time--the four epic-length tracks on PHAEDRA revealed a band that fully understood,and loved to manipulate, the complex array of knobs, dials, and switches that protruded from their synthesizer facades.
The title track is an almost spooky exercise in synth/sequencer tension and dynamics--while eerie atmospheres of Mellotron go head to head with spiraling Moogs, dense, humming sequencer webs percolate along the surface, motile and mobile. The album's closer "Sequent C," leaves the listener breathless, as black electronic clouds form and dissipate, and the surrounding space becomes corporeal sound.

Lisa Germano is unparalleled as a chronicler of sorrow. Her sleepy little-girl-with-a-head-cold voice is capable of communicating emotion with intensity and intimacy. As a songwriter, Germano pulls as much power from only three chords as Chuck Berry did--though to much different effect. Her music is just as irresistible. Such songs as "If I Think Of Love" and "Reptile" will have you hitting the "replay" button well into the wee hours.
SLIDE is Germano at her best. The quirky instrumentation includes violins, guitars, and harmonium; many of the songs are absolutely beautiful. Though muchhas been said about SLIDE being Germano's most optimistic disc, it still seems more ironic than sincere when she sings about "having fun."

WHEN A GUITAR PLAYS THE BLUES is one of Roy Buchanan's finest studio dates. A hand picked group of Chicago blues musicians--including Gloria Hardiman, who lends her gospel-charged soprano to "Why Don't You Want Me?," and the irrepressible Otis Clay, who tears it up on a version of O.V. Wright's "A Nickel And A Nail"--keep things at a high simmer. As always though, it is Buchanan's virtuosity that burns most brightly. While the fare here is primarily traditional hard-driving blues, the range of Buchanan's versatility and grab bag of effects (including double-string bends, over-the-top harmonics, snarls, scratches, and delicate, melodic underplaying) help transcend the genre.
One of Buch's most distinguishing characteristics is his manipulation of tonality and volume-knob dynamics (his approach sometimes bear a resemblance to the complex, evocative shadings of avant-jazzster Bill Frisell), a quality particularly notable on the title cut, which opens with a quote from a Bach fugue.The full range of his instrumental power is on display on the pounding "Short Fuse," the Elmore James-influenced "Hawaiian Punch" and the epic "Sneaking Godzilla Through The Alley." In all, a superior set.

Life can be cruel and nowhere is this more apparent than when Luther Vandross was felled by a stroke just prior to the release of DANCE WITH MY FATHER. For the most personal of his 15 albums, Vandross dipped into the worlds of R&B and hip-hop for help on a handful of songs. Checking in are Beyonce Knowles playing Donny Hathaway to Luther's Roberta Flack on a lush reading of "The Closer I Get to You" that finds the roles flipped and Busta Rhymes hopping aboard a thumping cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day" (that includes a Part II). Also helping out with the heavy lifting are Queen Latifah on the snappy "Hit It Again" with its crackling rhythms, and bad-girl Foxy Brown who brings plenty of attitude to the sassy "If It Ain't One Thing." For all the celebrity cameos, Vandross is most successful when he masterfully changes gears into his guise as pop's premiere balladeer. With his velvety croon, this New York City native reminisces about better times on the wistful "Once Were Lovers" (featuring a moving Stevie Wonder harmonica solo) and also delivers the heartfelt title track, a self-described career song dedicated to Vandross' late father.

POST, Bjork's second release as a solo artist, mines the fertile soil of the eclectic musical terrain of post-modern pop. The album throbs in and out of ambient cadences with techno beats, slips into showtune theatrics, then reels back to the dance floor.
With a full plate of sounds already on the table, Bjork adds her own unique flare to the presentation, proving she is not easily pigeonholed. The lyrically-insistent opener, "Army Of Me," is a relentless electronic grind that is typical of Bjork's vibe, but POST also digs into Western music's more organic resources. "It's Oh So Quiet" may be a remake of an old Hollywood showtune, but Bjork's version transcends the song's silver screen aloofness on the strength of her delightful screams ("Zing, BOOM!!/You fall in love"). It is directly followed by "Enjoy," a lurching hypnotic nod with musical help from British trip-hop MC, Tricky; and the smooth, Bee Gees-like orchestration of "Isobel," a swooning accompaniment to strobe light bongo drums which announces that the listener is no longer at a rave, but at a disco.
POST shows off Bjork's grasp of technology, history and basic pop aesthetics. Few modern rock albums have sampled so many different facets of the atypical buffet and have come up with such tasty results.

Metheny and Haden have a lot in common. They're two of the most respected musicians at the vanguard of contemporary jazz, and they've worked together in Metheny's own band as well as with people like Ornette Coleman, Abbey Lincoln and Michael Brecker. They're both innovators who've blazed new trails on their respective axes. They're also both from small towns in Missouri, which is the underlying theme of this collaboration. Essentially an acoustic duet album, MISSOURI SKY finds these old friends joining together to paint an aural landscape that evokes the wide open spaces and heartland Americana of the place where they grew up.

He's known to many as an inoffensive pop balladeer, but at the arguable peak of his career in the late '70s, Billy Joel released his darkest, most emotionally charged album. THE STRANGER abandons the grandstanding and broad melodic sweep of Joel's earlier records for a more intimate, introspective sound, effectively communicating Joel's ruminations on the perils of life and love. "Movin' Out" is something of an existentialist anthem, chronicling theway people's dreams are often irreparably crushed. The ominous-sounding title tune examines the many guises with which lovers disguise themselves in their attempts to entrap and deceive each other. "Only the Good Die Young" is hedonism at it's most iconoclastic. Even "She's Always a Woman," ostensibly a romantic piano ballad, is full of thorny, less-than-complimentary observations about its subject. While there's no denying that jazz-pop star Diana Krall's movie-star good looks went a long way toward endearing her to mainstream America, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Just as undeniable are Krall's gifts as a pianist and singer. Far from a crass populist, she's a subtle, nuanced performer who approaches her craft with an excess of skill and knowledge. This is apparent from the very beginning of THE LOOK OF LOVE, when Krall tackles the overly familiar Gershwin chestnut "S'Wonderful" not the way countless jazz singers have done in preceding decades, but in a style influenced by Joao Gilberto, who recorded the tune years before in a simmering bossa nova mode. This marriage of canny craft and artistic inspiration is repeated again and again throughout the album. Most of the songs here have been trotted out countless times by Krall's contemporaries and (especially) predecessors, but her thoughtful phrasing and low-key dynamic shifts match her unhurried, pastel piano style on each tune to bring out something special at the song's core.

Continuing on their path of mating vibrant dream-pop with raging guitars and explosive textures, Catherine Wheel tops itself again with a record that finds vocalist Rob Dickinson scraping his psyche raw. Unlike many other UK bands, Catherine Wheel doesn't neatly fit onto any bandwagon, opting instead to blaze their own path. Injectingmore organ, acoustic guitar and swooshing effects into the mix, ADAM AND EVE effectively sculpts the band's sound into seamless, traditional songwriting structures. Personal relationships provide the fodder for this album, which explores the many facets of that subject. BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR nearly snuck into record stores, preceded by a strange absence of hype. The implicit message of its five new songs, like that of the non-marketing campaign for the album, seems to be: enough already, let's get back to the music. The title song, a colder re-write of the Jackson classic "Billie Jean," draws you in, but Jackson quickly gets to the heart of the album with two astonishing songs that address his public image. "Ghosts" has an icy, metallic beat, while "Is It Scary" has the dramatic flair of a big pop ballad, but they feature nearly identical opening verses about ghosts and ghouls behind the walls and under the bed. In the former song, the ghouls are the paparazzi snapping pictures of Jackson's baby, and he asks of them, "Who gave you the right...Are you the ghost of jealousy?" In the next song, the ghosts turn out to be the many public faces of Michael Jackson, and he turns the image around, suggesting that ghoulishness is in the eye of the beholder: "If you wanna see eccentricalities/I'll be grotesque before your eyes...Is that scary for you, baby?"
It's a declaration of self-confidence, and Jackson follows with feisty remixes of songs from HISTORY, including a version of "2 Bad" peppered with a sample of "Beat It," and a Madonna-like disco mix of "Stranger In Moscow."

Although they are most assuredly a contemporary band, the Mavericks take a decidedly retro approach to country music. "Missing You" evokes the ethereal longing of early Roy Orbison over a dreamy Latin backdrop, while "Loving You" and "If Only You Knew" offer tender nods to vintage Elvis. But from the Tex-Mex revelry of "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down," to Malo's bluesy crooning over Floyd Cramer-styled lounge jazz piano on "My Secret Flame," the Mavericks also prove to be a great party band, with dozens of sweet instrumental touches.

The first Jackson Browne album presents a thoughtful, literate artist informed by the street-poet-with-guitar sound of Dylan. Browne takes that approach and refines it with a more formal use of language and a more carefully-crafted folk-rock sound that owesa bit to Van Morrison's early-'70s recordings. The L.A. studio-rock sound that crept into much of Browne's '70s catalog is at a minimum here. Instead, the album is full of low-key, acoustic-oriented ballads such as the somber "Song For Adam."
Lilting, mid-tempo cuts like "I Am A Child In These Hills" and the classic "Doctor My Eyes" manage to blend Browne's introspective lyrical approach with bubbly, infectious arrangements that make the self-obsessive sentiments go down easily. Along with James Taylor's SWEET BABY JAMES, this album helped launch a thousand mawkish imitators, but it stands as an important piece of history nevertheless.

BARAFUNDLE is the first domestically released album by gentle Welsh eccentrics Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. It is their fourth album overall, their fifth if one includes 1996's collection of album and EP tracks, INTRODUCING GORKY'S ZYGOTIC MYNCI. The Gorkys' music is somewhat more grounded in the real world than their often-spacey work has been in the past. Roxy Music subverted a jaded progressive rock scene with an original blend of science fiction imagery, art-school nonce and eccentric music. Vocalist Bryan Ferry sang in a camp-styled croon, part Noel Coward, part Lou Reed, and having dismissed leadership rival Brian Eno, assumed full control of artistic direction for the group's third album. Stranded introduced violinist Eddie Jobson, whose contributions slotted in perfectly alongside reed player Andy Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzanera. A sense of cohesion permeates the set, group members contribute lyrically, but there was no denying that Roxy Music here represent Ferry's vision. Melodically strong, the album provides an ideal structure for his quirky intonation, resulting in a heady mixof experimentation and commercial acumen.
