Explores Your Mind
Personnel: Al Green (vocals); Teenie Hodges (guitar); Andrew Love, Ed Logan (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Charles Hodges (piano, organ); Archie Turner, Michael Allen (piano); Leroy Hodges (bass); Howard Grimes (drums, congas, bongos); The Memphis Strings. Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. Many listeners are familiar with this album mostly because it includes of one of Green's best-known songs, "Take Me To The River," which became Talking Heads' first major hit when they covered it four years later. In fact, EXPLORES YOUR MIND represents the apex of Green's collaborations with producer Willie Mitchell and the Hi Records rhythm section. Leaner and more pointed than its predecessors, EXPLORES YOUR MIND finds Green stretching his emotions to the limit, testifying for all he's worth to both love and the Lord. Green's vision of the perfect love, as exemplified by "Stay With Me Forever," seems close enough to touch, and when he slips into his silky falsetto, it's the closest thing to rapture that you're likely to hear. Foreshadowing the mix of the worldly with the spiritual that he would explore more fully on THE BELLE ALBUM, Green attempts to reach some kind of accord between the two on "God Bless This Love." Despite his subsequent commitment to his religious beliefs, it's likely that the unresolved conflict between Green's heart and his soul are what make him such a complex andvital artist. SKU: 1008498

Far From Enough
Personnel: Viktor Krauss (vocals, electric guitar, electric piano, bass, arco bass, drums); Alison Krauss (vocals, viola); Bill Frisell (acoustic & electric guitars); Jerry Douglas (lap steel guitar, dobro); Steve Jordan (drums, congas). Recorded at Sound Emporium, Brown Cloud Studios,Nashville, Tennessee. A highly valued session player since the early 1990s, bassist Viktor Krauss has played with such illustrious figures as Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, and the Chieftains. Krauss's precise, opulent bass sound and compositions--which reveal a flair for incorporating elements of jazz, country, rock, and cinematic music--are showcased to superb effect on his first solo outing, FAR FROM ENOUGH. Krauss is joined on this eclectic, largely instrumental record by guitarist Frisell, drummer Steve Jordan, and dobro/lap-steel player Jerry Douglas. The few vocal turns on the album are primarily taken by the leader's renowned sister, Alison Krauss, whose angelic soprano (and fiddle playing) will be immediately familiar to bluegrass fans. Interestingly, Alison's vocals are primarily background--wordless voicings meant to add color and shading. The exception is a gauzy, gorgeous cover of Robert Plant's "Big Log." For the most part, Frisell's trademark, sonically textured guitar is in the foreground on FAR FROM ENOUGH. In fact, the record bears a strong resemblance to some of Frisell's own releases. This is not a bad thing, as the sophistication and stylistic adventurousness that characterize Frisell's recordings are fully present here. All told, this is a beautiful debut by a remarkable and dynamic musician. SKU: 6549953

Obsession
UFO: Phil Mogg (vocals); Michael Schenker (guitar); Paul Raymond (keyboards, guitar);Pete Way (bass); Andy Parker (drums). Recorded at C.P. McGregor's and Western Avenue, Los Angeles, California and The West 3rd Carrier Station, Beverly Hills, California. UFO had finally fulfilled their potential with 1977's exceptional hard rock tour de force, LIGHTS OUT, and released another prime slice of heavy metal just one year later, OBSESSION. While most '70s Euro-metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc., dealt largely with doom and gloom, UFO proved to have more in common with such US melodic hard rockers as Van Halen. OBSESSION proved to be UFO's most successful studio album ever, on the strength of such hard rocking highlights as "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Ain't No Baby." Even though guitarist Michael Schenker again pushes the songs to the limit here with his superb playing, OBSESSION would prove to be his final studio album with UFO. After just one more release, the classic live set STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT, Schenker left to briefly rejoin the Scorpions, before launching the Michael Schenker Group. SKU: 1075420

BBC Sessions, The
The material on the BBC SESSIONS is drawn from the band's performances for the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1969 and 1971. Disc 1 is presented in mono while Disc 2 is presented in stereo. Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass); John Bonham (drums). Recorded between 1969 and 1971. Includes liner notes by Luis Rey. There is no question that Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest studio bands ever. Every rock album made since 1969 owes ahuge debt to the techniques Jimmy Page developed, especially his groundbreaking "guitar-as-orchestra" style of layering track upon track. But what is often forgotten is that for all of their studio tinkering, they could deliver a live performance as powerful and full of spontaneity as any "jam" band. Disc one, recorded on four separate nights in 1969, shows a raw, blues-obsessed rock and roll band. The emphasis is clearly placed on creating a highly-charged improvisatory atmosphere. Recorded in 1971, just before the release of their seminal IV album, disc two captures a band exploring the limits of what they could create live without losing sight of their roots. The performances are more cerebral and introspective, with more attention paid to arrangements, though they still find the time to stretch out and jam, particularly during "Whole Lotta Love" and "Dazed And Confused." Recorded at two critical points in the band's career, THE BBC SESSIONS offers an important look at Led Zeppelin as they define and redefine themselves, and in the process, rock and roll. SKU: 1000316

True Reflections
Personnel: Boyd Tinsley (vocals, violin); Benjy King (acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer piano, organ, percussion); Espen Noreger (guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, drums); Corey Harris (guitar, lap steel guitar, background vocals); Doyle Bramhall II (guitar, background vocals); Haavard Hana, Keith Mack, Chris Bruce, Steve Johnson (guitar); Greg Leisz (lap steel guitar); Dave Palmer (melodica, Wurlitzer piano, organ); Patrick Warren (Wurlitzer piano, organ, chamberlain, keyboards); David Pitch (bass, arco bass); Jeff Allen (bass); J.J. Johnson (drums, percussion); Jonathan Keidan (percussion); Boots Ottestad, Toshi Reagon, Lisa German) (background vocals); The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Producers: Craig Street, Espen Noreger, Haavard Hana. Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California; Allaire, Shokan, New York; Mission Sound, Brooklyn, New York; Bang Music, New York, New York; Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington. Boyd Tinsley's got a lot of surprises up his sleeve on this, his first solo album. As the violinist in the Dave Matthews Band, capable of reeling of hot solos at a moment's notice, you might think his own outing would be full of jazzy instrumentals that push the world/fusion side of the DMB sound. Instead, TRUE REFLECTIONS is a rootsy singer-songwriter record dripping with organic Americana, suggesting a collision between Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, and a mellower Hootie & the Blowfish. Not only is the jazzier aspect of things completely eschewed, Tinsley doesn't even feature his violin very much. Instead, the focus is squarely on his singing and songwriting, whose roots are revealed in a scaled-down, acoustic-based cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." Although Mr. Matthews himself does make a guest appearance, adding hisvoice to the closing title track, even that cut doesn't bear his stamp so much as that of Tinsley's resolutely earthy singer-songwriter vibe. Opiate
Tool: Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Adam Jones (guitar); Paul D'Amour (bass); Danny Carey (drums). Producers: Sylvia Massy, Steve Hansgen, Tool. Recorded at: Sound City, Van Nuys, California and live at Jello Loft, Hollywood, California on December 31, 1991. Back in the early months of 1992, alternative rock was exploding. Radio and MTV had finally fully embraced the oft-dismissed genre, but the bands that were receiving most of the airplay were writing straightforward, raw punk-pop songs. After the breakup of Jane's Addiction, another Los Angeles band, Tool, satisfied fans looking for progressive art-rock with an alternative edge. Issued in March of 1992, Tool's debut six-track OPIATE EP showed that the new band was creating its own highly original sound. Half of the songs stretched over the four-minute mark, which signaled the epic-songwriting direction the band would explore further on such future releases as 1993's UNDERTOW and 1996's AENIMA. While the compositions on the debut aren't as developed as those on the aforementioned albums, OPIATE remains a gripping listen. Four studio tracks are featured ("Sweat," "Hush," "Part of Me," and the title track), as well as a pair of tracks recorded live at the Jello Loft in Hollywood, California, on New Year's Eve of 1991 ("Cold and Ugly," "Jerk Off"). Most of Tool's now instantly recognizable musical traits, like Maynard James Keenan's perturbed singing and guitarist Adam Jones' repetitive guitar riffs, were already noticeableon OPIATE. Motherland
This is anEnhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Katie Goldberg (vocals); Gabriel Gordon (acoustic & electric guitar); Greg Leisz (acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin); Sandra Park, Sharon Yamada (violin); Karen Dreyfus (viola); Alan Stepansky (cello); Sandra Church (alto flute); Chris Tedesco (trumpet); Elizabeth Steen (Hammond organ); Patrick Warren (pump organ); Graham Maby (bass); Matt Chamberlain (drums). Producers: T-Bone Burnett, Natalie Merchant. Recorded at Allaire Studios, Shokan, New York; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California; Clinton Studios, New York, New York between June 15 & September 9, 2001. In the post-Lilith Fair solo career of former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant, MOTHERLAND stands as something of an achievement. It melds the lyrical craft she began developing all those years ago with the Maniacs, the contemporary pop sensibilities she's been crafting since the beginning of her solo work, and a variety of new influences that seem to have seeped in somewhere along the way. Things kick off distinctively with the creepy, violin-colored reggae slow-burner "This House is on Fire." From there it's off to an eclectic mix-and-match of styles, including the folk-ballad feel of the title track, the sultry blues of "Put the Law on You," and the gospel-soul tinge of "Build a Levee" (where Merchant is aided by considerable pipes of Mavis Staples. Even as MOTHERLAND traverses a variety of genres, the distinctive approach Merchant applies to the songwriting, performance, and arrangements makes this both one of her most memorable and most consistent solo albums. Rice Rice Hillman And Pedersen
Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen: Larry Rice (vocals, mandolin); Tony Rice (guitar); Chris Hillman (vocals, mandolin); Herb Pedersen (vocals, guitar, banjo); Additional personnel: Fred Travers (dobro); Rickie Simpkins (fiddle); Bill Bryson, Ronnie Simpkins (bass). Principally recorded at Bias Recording, Springfield, Virginia. Includes liner notes by Jon Weisberger. The concept of a "supergroup" is usually regarded with great anticipation, usually followed by disappointment. Many are excited by the prospect of several impressive performers who are established in their own right getting together, yet often egos clash, opportunities are missed, and the endresult is less than the sum of its parts. This is thankfully not the case with this album, where all the participants remember that the song is the important thing. The Rice brothers are among the finest players in both bluegrass and "new acoustic music" (a fusion of bluegrass and jazz); Chris Hillman was a founding member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Desert Rose Band; and Herb Pedersen has played with the Dillards, Jerry Garcia, and John Denver, among others. This is a magnificent acoustic affair, with a definite bluegrass orientation, full of warm, close, high-lonesome harmonies and impeccable musicianship that draws attention to the tune, not to itself. This quartet makes Garcia's "Friend of the Devil" and Emmylou Harris's "One of These Days" their own, and "Moonshine" gives their instrumental a chance to shine. Fans of contemporary bluegrass and folk: this is the Real Deal. SKU: 5078457

Dragontown (Limited Edition) [ECD]
Personnel: Alice Cooper (vocals); Bob Marlette (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Ryan Roxie (guitar, background vocals); Tim Pierce, Wayne Swinny (guitar); Sid Riggs (keyboards, programming); Greg Smith (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums); Teddy "Zigzag" Andreadis, Eric Dover, Calico Cooper, Giovanna Morgana (background vocals). Recorded at The Blue Room, Woodland Hills, California and Henson Studios, Los Angeles, California. Alice Cooper's second release of the 21st century, 2001's DRAGONTOWN, can best be summed up as the next chapter of his previous release, BRUTAL PLANET, which many longtime fans considered to be the Coop's best, most focused, and heaviest work in years. Theatrical rock's godfather updated his sound for the new millennium to keep in step with the contemporaneous crop of heavy hitters, without sacrificing his noted macabre trademark. This is evidenced by such tracks as the Elvis-goof "Disgraceland," the epic title track, and such Sabbath-like slow grinders as "Deeper" and "Sister Sara." On most of his albums since the mid-'70s (1975's classic WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE to be exact), Alice has included a tender ballad ("Only Women Bleed," "I Never Cry," "Only My Heart Talking," etc.), and here "EveryWoman Has A Name" fits the bill. Nevertheless, those figuring that Alice would soften in his old age are in for a rude awakening with the rocking DRAGONTOWN. SKU: 1077396

I Love Jazz
Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Omer Simeon (soprano saxophone); Bud Freeman, Eddie Miller (tenor saxophone); Taft Jordan, Abdul Salaam (a.k.a. William "Chiefie" Scott), Charlie Shavers (trumpet); Alfred Cobbs, Elmer Crumbley, Paul Seiden, Jack Teagarden, Trummy Young (trombone); Barney Bigard, Edmond Hall, Peanuts Hucko (clarinet); Danny Barker, George Barnes, Al Hendrickson (guitar); Squire Gersh, Mort Herbert, Arvell Shaw (bass); Danny Barcelona, Cozy Cole, Barrett Deems, Kenny Johns (drums). Producers include: Milt Gabler. Reissue producer: Bryan Koniarz. Recorded in Hollywood, California on October 8, 1958 and in New York, New York between April 26, 1950 & January 25, 1957. Originally released on Decca (74227). All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Verve's By Request series. Louis Armstrong became the guiding force of American music, father and mentor of jazz and its musicians. "Satchmo" turned jazz into high art. These tracks, recorded between 1950-58, show the smooth finesse of a mature Armstrong with his all-stars, an A-list of jazz luminaries such as Cozy Cole and Jack Teagarden. Old time favorites like "Twelfth Street Rag" are crisply recast with a mellower sound than renditions from the 1920s. Armstrong's trumpet is splendiferous, as are contributions like the glowing piano chorus of the great Earl Hines. "Skokiaan," a huge hit of 1953, is given a Dixieland makeover that outshines the Four Lads chart-topping recording. Armstrong's music always bears the marks of a man enjoying himself. Still, it's easy to see the musical genius behind the revelry. His scat treatment does more for "Basin Street Blues" than the published lyrics ever could. Even the solemn and reverent "Tenderly/You'll Never Walk Alone" has a festivity reminiscent of a New Orleans funeral parade. SKU: 6535661

Blues Breakers
Full performer name: John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers: John Mayall (vocals, piano, organ, harmonica); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass); Hughie Flint (drums). Additional personnel: Alan Skidmore (tenor saxophone); John Almond (baritone saxophone); Dennis Healey (trumpet). Includes original release liner notes by Neil Slaven & reissue liner notes by Paul Trynka. 1966's BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is full of portent, as some of its participants would become superstars after its release. Future Cream guitarist Eric Clapton was highly rated enough in the UK blues-rock scene to score second billing, but it wasn't until this recording that he'd had the opportunity to truly stretch out in the studio and show offhis awesome soloing skills. Clapton's earlier stint in the Yardbirds had found his ideas largely shouted down by pop-oriented producer/manager Giorgio Gomelsky, but here kindred spirit/producer Mike Vernon simply let Clapton play as he wished. The sympathetic rhythm section of Hughie Flint and future Fleetwood Mac founder John McVie, along with Mayall's best-ever vocals and organ, make BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON one of the all-time great British blues albums. Extinction Level Event (The Final World Front)
Personnel includes: Busta Rhymes, Flipmode Squad, Jay-Z, Mystikal (rap vocals); Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Darrell Delite Allamby (variousinstruments); Kenny Dickerson (percussion); Delite, Kenny Flav (programming); Janet Jackson, Antoinette Roberson (background vocals). The Lordz Of Brooklyn: Adam McLeer, Joe Conoscenti, Eric Anderson, Adam Meyer (various intruments). Producers include: Busta Rhymes, Rockwilder, Da Beatminerz, DJ Scratch, Tony Touch. E.L.E. (THE FINAL WORLD FRONT) was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Gimme Some More" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "What's It Gonna Be?!" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By Duo Or Group. The full title of this album, EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT, gives one a good idea of the themes contained herein. The album kicks off with a spoken word piece setting a scene of apocalypse and the end of civilization as we know it. This rather fatalistic prediction is given life on the title tune, but many of the songs here are concerned with less weighty topics. Janet Jackson guests on the propulsive, sexy "What's It Gonna Be," a tune with more carnal concerns. Ozzy Osbourne even turns up for the rallying battle cry of "This Means War!," which is based around Black Sabbath's classic "Iron Man." As always, Busta knocks out some impressively tongue-twisting rhymes over unpredictable, off-kilter beats, in his patented, unrelenting style. Both fearsome and fun, E.L.E. is prime Busta. Signed Sealed And Delivered
As you listen to this album, you will inevitably find yourself lamenting the devastating shortage of hours in a day in which to continue grooving. 1970's SIGNED, SEALED AND DELIVERED marks another turning point for Mr. Wonder as his lyrics grow more world-conscious and the music gets indubitably funkier. Swift, dynamic bass-playing, deep clavichord and head-nodding riffs are just some of the elements which drive the new sound. Those who cherish his more sugary Motown nuggets of the '60s needn't fear, though--they too continue to claim a space. The title track may well place you unwittingly en marche to the door of your sweetie. Thehigh-stepping horn lines and husky rhythm section lay the foundation for a swinging vocal delivery laced with sitar. Stevie later holds church of the grooviest order on "Heaven Help Us All," raising his good will towards humanity to a thunderous crown of horns and choir. The thrilling "Sugar" and a lively rendition of "We Can Work It Out" display his highly effective technique of vocal layering through overdubs. This album is full of fine R&B with many tasty surprises. SKU: 1006897
