Behind The Front
Black Eyed Peas: Will.I.Am., Apl.de.Ap., Taboo. Additional personnel: J. Curtis, Kevin Feyen (guitar); Matt Nabours (violin); Tommy O. (flute); Will Adams (M.P.C. 3000, Rhodes, Hammond B3 organ, Moog, theramin, marimba, melody phone); Brian Lapin (Rhodes, Hammond B3 organ, bass, Moog); Carlos Guaico (Rhodes, bass); Mike Fratantuno (bass, guitar); Miles Tackett (bass, cello); Peter Kim (bass); Terence Yoshiaka (drums, percussion); Motives, D.J. Drez, Paul Poli (scratches); Darell Cross (drums); Sierra Swan, Planet Swan, Macy Gray, Red Foo, Ingrid Dupree, Einstein Brown, Dawn Beckman, Kim Hill (background vocals). Producers: Will Adams, Paul Poli, C-Los, Brian Lapin. Engineers: Brian Lapin, David Haines, Lou Michaels. This clever crew of M.C's; main mic man Will.I.Am, acrobatic Apl.de.AP and the hypnotizing Taboo, brings different cultural backgrounds and styles into a mix of hip-hop, soul and funk. With Native American, African-American, Mexican and Filipino influences, it's no wonder their album is filled with 16 songs that are all widely varied in style. "Joints and Jams" has funky jeep-thumping beats that move at a commercial radio pace. It is also featured on the BULWORTH soundtrack. The diversity of Black Eyed Peas' songs, from the melodic soul sound of "The Way You Make Me Feel" to the Latin Soul vibes of "Karma," bring a fresh sound to the sometimes monotonous world of Hip- Hop. Along the linesof De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the Roots, BEP show a unique vision, sound and artistry on BEHIND THE FRONT. Other notables are the opening cut, "Fallin' Up," which has a hip-hop steady, head-nodding drum track, the smooth R&B-flavored "Duet" and the Spanish/urban/reggae amalgam "Que Dices?". SKU: 1019633

Bon Jovi [Remastered]
Cassette available on Mercury (814 982). NOTES: Bon Jovi: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals, guitar); Richie Sambora (guitar, background vocals); David Rashbaum (keyboards, background vocals); Alec John Such (bass, background vocals); Tico Torres (drums). Additional personnel: Aldo Nova, Tim Pierce(guitar); Roy Bittan (keyboards); Huey McDonald (bass); Frankie La Rocka (drums); David Grahmme, Mick Seeley (background vocals); Chuck Burgi, Doug Katsoras. Engineers: Scott Litt, Jeff Hendrickson, Larry Alexander. Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Bon Jovi's 1984 debut not only became a blueprint for the band's multi-platinum releases of later years, but a definitive work for an entire genre. Though scores of short-lived pop-metal bands rocketed to popularity on the success of this release, the time-weathered BON JOVI continues to stand out from the pack. "Runaway," with its infectious hook and keyboard work from E-Streeter Roy Bittan, was discovered by a New York DJ and gave the band some early exposure. "She Don't Know Me" is a catchy mid-tempo rocker. "Shot Through the Heart" turns the hard-rocking pulse up a few notches, with Richie Sambora letting loose on the kind of solo that would be copied by a plethora of L.A. bands. David Bryan's keyboards, an integral part of the group's sound, work nicely on the melodic rocker "Breakout." At a time when synthesizers dominated the pop landscape, Bon Jovi used them to gloss a heavy-rock foundation. "Come Back" shows the enormity of the charisma and emotion that Jon poured into his singing. BON JOVI is a great debut by a band in its underground, formative stage; a street album from a band hungry to make it. SKU: 1005296

Made In Japan
Deep Purple: Ian Gilan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (organ, piano); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded live in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan from August 15-17, 1972. This package contains the original MADE IN JAPAN on one disc, plus one disc of previously unreleased songs from the same shows. Recorded on the Japanese tour of 1972, Deep Purple created the most effortless of great live albums. Labouring under the MachineHead tour and with inter-band relationships that saw both Gillan and Glover feuding with the sometimes difficult Blackmore and quitting the band early the following year, the record, for its part, does not suffer from the personnel inconsistencies, the band playing what would become, in retrospect, a greatest hits set. The consistency of the material - 'Child In Time', 'Strange Kind Of Woman', 'Space Truckin'' - was, and still is, astounding, matched only by the arch standards of Purple's live performance. Professional Vol.1, The
Personnel: DJ Clue, Puff Daddy, DMX, Jadakiss, Styles, Drag-On, Eve, Cam-Ron, Big Pun, Noreaga, Canibus, Nas, Nature, Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Memphis Bleek, EPMD, Redman, Keith Murray, Flipmode Squad, Mase, Foxy Brown, Fabulous Sport, Mobb Deep, Noyd, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Mocha, Nicole Wray, Jermaine Dupri, R.O.C., Raekwon, Lord Tariq, Muggs, Made Men, MOP, Baby Sham, Boot Camp Clik (rap vocals); Mariah Carey (vocals); David Matos (guitar); Martha Mook (strings); Lil' Rob (keyboards, bass); DURO (keyboards). Producers include: Swizz Beatz, Clue, DURO, Self, D.J. Scratch. Engineers include: Steve Sounder, Patrick Viala, Vaughn Session. And then DJ Clue rocked the roof off of your car. Clue and crew swoop down and make mincemeat of the joint with a fireball of raw ghetto rhyming, authentically old-school style loops and size-XL beats. The feel here is often spooky--from the mournful trumpet line and ominous harpsichord on "Exclusive-New Shit" to the plaintive piano fragments on "Thugged Out Shit," the samples give Clue's production the aural equivalent of a long, black cape. The guest list impresses as well: Big Pun, Noreaga, Nature, EPMD and Missy Elliott are just some of the hip-hop luminaries that make this thing burn. Flipmode Squad and the "Clue-minati" form an alliance on the hard-riffing "Whatever You Want," with the Flipmode kids' angular rhyming style enlivening this greenback anthem. DJ Clue has all the stylistic integrity of a real East Coast original. SKU: 1006537

Guess Who's Back [PA]
Personnel includes: 50 Cent, Nas, Bravehearts, Nature, G-Unit (rap vocals). GUESS WHO'S BACK could mislead the uninitiated in that it's far from a repackaging on the coattails of the fierce rapper's multi-platinum breakthrough GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'. This collection culled from the Queens rapper's much sought-after mix tapes and one shelved major-label release snuck out on a small label a few months prior tohis Eminem-aided 2003 coming-out party on Shady Records. The title plays on his high-profile feuds with Ja Rule and Murder Inc. (among others); 50 Cent's been shot, stabbed, and caught up in tons of intrigue, but he's back. Unbowed he stands on the cover of GUESS WHO'S BACK, his figure a blur pointing a very clear gun just to the left of the camera. He backs up the bluster of this stance with a furious, uncompromising flow that's closer to the streets than his Number One album. While underground heads will have most of the tracks, newer fans will get a glimpse of where 50 Cent came from. Nas, 50's most obvious lyrical cousin in both imagery and severity, appears on a few tracks, including the brutal "Too Hot." 50 Cent is the epitome of the street (which makes his mainstream success all the more remarkable) and GUESS WHO'S BACK stands as a document of his authenticity. Many Moods Of Moses
Personnel: Beenie Man (vocals); 56 Crew, Marie "Twiggy" Gittens, Michelle Jackson, J.C. Lodge, Michael Mendez, Nicola Tucker (background vocals); E. Freeman, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis, Ansel Collins, Dean Fraser, Nambo, Jeremy Harding, Steve "Lenky" Marsden, Bob Patin, Kerry Marx, Milton Sledge, Mike Chapman, Hoot Hester, Tommy White, David Cole, Buju Banton, The Taxi Gang, A.R.P., Anthony Kelly, Lady Saw, Little Kirk, Danny Marshall, Andrew Thomas, Handel Tucker. Producers include: Sly Dunbar, Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis, Robbie Shakespeare, Jeremy Harding, The Shocking Vibes Crew. Engineers include: Hugh "Cuban" Palmer, Jeremy Harding, Dean Mundy. Recorded at Sonic Sounds Recording Studio, Hard SoundRecording Studio, Penthouse Recording Studio & Anchor Recording Studios, Kingston, Jamaica; Wildwood Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Maxine Stowe. MANY MOODS OF MOSES was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Since debuting as a five year old prodigy, Beenie Man (aka Moses Davis) has quietly developed a reputation as a versatile performer whose pushes the boundaries of reggae. MANY MOODS OF MOSES finds Beenie Man applying his rapid-fire vocal style to duets with dancehall king Buju Banton ("Woman A Sample") and dancehall queen Lady Saw ("So Hot"). The opening cut, "Foundation," immediately indicates this isn't going to be a run-of-the-mill reggae album. Featuring cameos by Sly & Robbie and Dean Fraser, it has an African flavor to it that includes harmonizing a la Ladysmith Black Mambazo and a few verses of the folkloric "Wimoweh" before swinging into a contemporary dancehall beat. Elsewhere, Beenie Man throws in dub elements ("Have You Ever"), a tribute to Bob Marley and Steven Biko ("Steve Biko") and a hidden cover of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative." Most surprising is the inclusion of "Ain't Gonna Figure," a pure country song recorded in Nashville and overflowing with fiddle and pedal steel. SKU: 6485966

Dreams Of Freedom (Ambient Translations Of Bob Marley In Dub)
Full title: Dreams Of Freedom: Ambient Translations Of Bob Marley In Dub. DREAMS OF FREEDOM is a continuous, in-the-mix recording featuring Bill Laswell's dub versions of Bob Marley compositions. Personnel includes: Bob Marley (vocals); Karl Berger (conductor); Aiyb Dieng (percussion); Tetsu Inoue (sound effects). Bill Laswell's 1997 ambient treatments of these Bob Marley classics shouldn't be seen in the same light as, say, a Lee Perry dub collection. Laswell approaches these mixes from quite another angle, seeking not to accentuate the music's quirks and singularities, but rather to smooth them out, providing a serene, ambient soundscape on which to apply his tonal palette. The result is a pleasing collection of Marley greatest hits, twisted, remade, and remodeled. This seamless summation of the reggae master's oeuvre, commencing with "Rebel Music" and rapidly segueing into "No Woman No Cry." The first hint of consistent rhythm comes with the ominous "The Heathen," where the accent is on the drums and backing vocals, not to mention the omnipresent steady, pumping bass. "Waiting in Vain" is a light, almost conventional dub in comparison, all light guitars and piano trills, but we're soon back down the dub tunnel with "Exodus," heavy on cavernous echo while nodding in the direction of the choppy horn riff. The cumulative effect of DREAMS OF FREEDOM, aseach track morphs into the next, is a slowly escalating dub ceremonial, herbal incense optional. SKU: 1003144

Stay What You Are
Saves The Day includes: Chris Conley, David Salway, Eben D'Amico, Bryan Newman, Ted Alexander. Additional personnel: Richard Barron (organ). Recorded at Sunset Sound, Sound Factory, Hollywood, California and Sonora Sound Studios, Los Feliz, California. This pop-punk outfit started out young--VERY young. They were still in their teens when they released their first album, and this one--their third--naturally finds them still flush with youthful enthusiasm but bearing distinct signs of songwriting maturity. There's no slowdown of excitement on STAY WHAT YOUARE--the band still practices four-on-the-floor, heavy-guitar punk-pop a la Green Day or Blink-182. But their lyrical smarts put them in a place somewhere in between those two bands; smarter and more purposeful than the latter and minus the ballads-with-strings moves of the former. Although the pace seldom lets up from blazing guitars, pounding drums, and proud, loud, and snotty vocals, there's a discernible intelligence at the heart of the songs that lets the listener know that Saves the Day put a fair amount of thought into the tunes on STAY WHAT YOU ARE. Greatest
Personnel includes: Duran Duran; Jonathan Elias (samples). Producers include: Duran Duran, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, Chris Kimsey, Daniel Abraham. Compilation producer: Nigel Reeve. Though '80s nostalgia was an inevitability, the truth is that some of the most influential voices of that era never went away. The members of Duran Duran had their mortgages paid off long before GREATEST was conceived, so their sincerity in releasing a best of album is not to be doubted. One listen is enough to convince the most forgetful fan that every once in a while, the musical taste of teenage girls is right on the mark. GREATEST follows the teen heartthrobs from their inspiring early days (the quintessential new wave anthem "Planet Earth," the stylish, more-than-suggestive "Girls On Film") straight through to their later work ("Electric Barbarella," a whirring, modern dance cut). In between, the classic "HungryLike The Wolf" and the mournful "Save A Prayer" give evidence of the band's mastery of the pop form, while the Bond theme "View To A Kill" and "Notorious" trace their development during the decade with which they are inextricably linked. Breakout [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Johnny Hammond (organ); Hank Crawford (alto saxophone); Stanley Turrentine, Grover Washington, Jr. (tenor saxophone); Danny Moore, Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Eric Gale, George Benson (guitar); Johnny Williams (bass); Billy Cobham (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch. Recorded between June 3 & July 18, 1971. Originally released on Kudu Records. Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch. All tracks have been digitally remastered. If a 12-string guitarist earned the name "Rickenbacker" it would tell you something about the extent of his abilities, so consider the significance of organist Johnny Hammond's moniker and realize it ain't his given surname. BREAKOUT is a prime example of the kind of groove-conscious-but-breezy soul jazz that CTI and its sister label Kudu were famous for inthe '70s. Hammond arrived at Kudu after a string of releases on Prestige, and he adapted perfectly to the new setting. The album finds him modernizing his sound a bit, taking on versions of pop tunes (by the likes Carole King and Nail Sedaka) without ever compromising his aesthetic integrity. Eric Gale's punchy guitar, Airto Moreira's percolating percussion, and the robust R&B sax tones of Grover Washington, Jr. (when he was still cool) all aid Hammond's cause immeasurably. Still, the focus is obviously on the sterling organ work on offer here, full of soul and grit, never overly facile, but always rising to meet the challenge of each new tune. SKU: 1070167

So Blu
Personnel includes: Blu Cantrell (vocals); L.O. (rap vocals); Derek Scott, Mike Scott (guitar); Dallas Austin (keyboards, bass, background vocals); Jason Rome, Don Vito (keyboards, programming); James "Big Jim" Wright (keyboards, background vocals); Orenthal Harper, WillieBriggs (keyboards); Aaron Clay (bass); Stokley (drums); Deshone Williams (percussion); Alex Richbourg (programming); Terry Lewis (background vocals). Producers include: C. "Tricky" Stewart, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, Olliewood. Engineers include: Malik Crawford, Brian "B. Luv" Thomas, Carlton Lynn. Includes liner notes by David Nathan. "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Blu Cantrell's debut album is disarming in its defiance of expectations--there are no diva-driven, melismatic vocals, the ballads are for the most part stripped-down and spare, and the uptempo numbers are driving and to the point without indulging in street braggadocio. On the evidence of "I'll Find a Way," a contemporary gospel-inflected love song in the same way that Aretha Franklin's best cuts were infused with gospel, Cantrell has a long and distinguished line of influences on which to draw. She also tears through "Swingin'," a faked-up slice of '30s pastiche, with panache to spare. She's more Lena Horne than Mariah Carey, and songs like "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" show an ease with earthy situations that Ma Rainey would have found familiar. Production values are stock turn-of-the-century urban R&B, but on this showing Cantrell sounds like she'd be equally at home with a big band or a small jazz combo--SO BLU may well be merely a prelude to a long and successful career. Village Green Preservation Society, The [Remastered]
The Kinks: Ray Davies, Dave Davies (vocals, guitar); Pete Quaife (bass); Mick Avory (drums). It's easy to imagine the confusion with which this manifesto for the defense of the status quo was received on its release in 1968. The world was in turmoil and the pose of the Street Fighting Man, rebellious andpolitically aware, was far sexier than the quaint homebody image the Kinks present here. The title track finds Ray Davies proudly declaring himself a preservationist of custard pies, vaudeville, and such comic book characters as Desperate Dan. However, these slices of suburban life have weathered a lot better than most of their contemporaries. The Kinks were working in their own homey little world, as evidenced by songs such as the album's title track, "Picture Book," about family snapshot albums, and "All of My Friends Were There" whose very un-rebellious subject is public embarrassment. To compound the weirdness there's also "Big Sky," a classic Kinks song about God that's not remotely religious, and a rocker about a steam engine. The overarching theme of VILLAGE GREEN is that of unalloyed nostalgia--it's only today, now that many of the things Davies feared would disappear have actually vanished, that the truth and clarity of his vision is apparent. Son Of Schmilsson [Remastered]
SON OF SCHMILSSON was the follow-up to Harry Nilsson's most commercially successful album, NILSSON SCHMILSSON. Again produced by Richard Perry, it's a well-balanced set of semi-loopy rockers ("Take 54," "You're Breaking My Heart") and ballads, both lushly orchestrated ("Remember Christmas") and spare ("Turn On Your Radio"). The album includes the hit "Spaceman" and closes with one of the only pop songs to include the sound of gargling, "The Most Beautiful World in the World." Asits predecessor does, this album enjoys a spirited sense of band interplay, which perfectly matches the material at hand. Musicians on board include the scantily pseudonym-shrouded George Harrison (George Harrysong) and Ringo Starr (Richie Snare). SKU: 1057581

Viva Wisconsin
Violent Femmes: Gordon Gano (vocals, acoustic guitar); Brian Ritchie (vocals, shakuhachi, conch, harmonica, soprano saxophone, Theramin, xylophone, acoustic bass); Guy Hoffman (vocals, bugle, snare drum, tranceaphone). The Horns Of Dilemma: Sigmund Snopek III (vocals, flute, Native American flute, bass clarinet, oboe, trombone, piano); Mike Kock (saxophone); Shane Derstl (trumpet); Ray Cribb (trombone, bass); Eric Markstrum (trombone). Recorded live in Wisconsin from October 25-31 1998. Recorded live before an adoring and extremely vocal crowd (guess where), VIVA WISCONSIN is the Violent Femmes' return to basics album. With "no overdubbing,no electronics, no crap," the Femmes tear into their impressive back catalogue of tracks with a fervor that has been somewhat subdued on more than one of the more recent studio albums. The performances here go a long way to suggesting that the best way to hear these songs is live. Nearly every track is at least as good as its studio counterpart, but there are some standouts. "Life Is an Adventure," from ROCK..., was always a nice song, but here is looser and it seems even more heartfelt. Though "American Music" is a song that is good enough to withstand even the most uninspired performance, the version here truly shines, far outstripping the album version that appeared on WHY DO BIRDS SING To give you an idea of how good these versions are, even an elongated drum solo on "Black Girls" somehow manages to sound as though it ought to have been in the original version (from HALLOWED GROUND). And how can you fault an album that ends after more than 72 minutes with "Kiss Off". SKU: 1025910

Reckless
Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, percussion); Tina Turner (vocals); Keith Scott (guitar, background vocals); Tommy Mandel, Rob Sabino (keyboards); Dave Taylor, Rob Sabino (bass); Pat Steward (drums, background vocals); Mickey Curry, Steve Smith (drums); Jim Vallance (percussion); Jody Perpick (handclaps, background vocals); Beanbag, Lou Gramm, John (background vocals). Bryan Adams was played a great deal on the radio in 1984/5; his music was the most radio-friendly rock to have been heardin a long time. Revisiting this album more than a decade later still confirms this; if anything, hearing him less makes you like him more. The hit singles still sound consistently good - 'Somebody', 'Summer Of '69' and 'Run To You' - but although he has a clearly recognizable style and sound all the other tracks sound fresh. Adams never needs to top this record as there is enough grist on this to keep him playing live forever. SKU: 1002254

Circus, The
Erasure's second album, 1987's THE CIRCUS, is one of their most uncompromising in several ways. The duo's most unfailingly dancefloor-oriented release, much of THE CIRCUS consists of in-your-face Hi-NRG disco beats largely unvarnished by the pop savvy of later singles like "Stop!" or "Chains of Love." Similarly, THE CIRCUS finds singer Andy Bell in complete control of Erasure's lyrics--much of 1986's WONDERLAND had been written solely by partner Vince Clarke--and the emphatically gay singer bluntly tackles majorthemes on songs like "It Doesn't Have To Be" and "Hideaway." A powerful, sometimes unsettling album. An important note: Later in 1987, THE CIRCUS was radically reworked into the remixed/re-recorded THE TWO RING CIRCUS. The two albums fundamentally differ enough that Erasure fans will want both. THE CIRCUS's bitterly sarcastic "Sexuality" and a reworking of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Edvard Grieg's PEER GYNT are not included on THE TWO RING CIRCUS. SKU: 1083679

Cannibalism Vol.2
Can: Damo Suzuki, MalcolmMooney (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass); Jaki Liebezeit (drums). Digitally remastered by Holger Czukay. Though it was released over a decade later, the 22 tracks on CANNIBALISM II are a perfect match with the selections from the first volume. However, where that volume focused primarily on the group's earliest work, CANNIBALISM II directs its attentions to a broader range, covering tracks from 1968 to the group's first (temporary) breakup in 1978. Including obscure tracks like "Mother Upduff" (a musical recasting of the urban legend about the stolen grandmother's corpse), an excellent edit of the expansive "Animal Waves," and a fascinating remix melding "I Want More" and "And More" from 1976's FLOW MOTION, CANNIBALISM II functions as not only a convenient starting point for neophytes, but a handy collection for fans. Taken in toto, the three volumes of CANNIBALISM are as good a summation of this wide-ranging group's work as you're likely to find. SKU: 4123439
