Surrounded By Silence
Additional personnel include: GZA, Ghostface, Aesop Rock, Masta Killa, Beans , Broadcast, Cafe Tacuba (rap vocals); DJ Nobody (turntables); Tyondai Braxton, Kazu, Alejandra De Heza, Claudia De Heza, Camu. On the ambitious SURROUNDED BY SILENCE, producer Scott Herren fully embraces his inner hip-hop tendencies to deliver a sprawling, guest-laden release. A 21-track opus, SURROUNDED BY SILENCE features appearances from celebrated New York MCs Ghostface and El-P (on album standout "Hide Ya Face"), Masta Killa and GZA ("Just the Thought"), and Beans ("Morale Crusher"). Fortunately, for fans of the Prefuse 73 tag, Herren doesn't completely abandon his past formula. Instrumental tracks such as "Expressing ViewsIs Obviously Illegal" and "Minutes Away Without You," where Herren loses himself in an atmospheric world of jazz and glitch-hop, recall the sound of ONE WORD EXTINGUISHER. Furthermore, Herren recruits female vocalists to add yet another dimension to the proceedings. Claudia and Alejandra De Heza of On.Air.Library. ("Pastel Assassins" and "It's Crowded") and Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead ("We Got Our Own Way") use their distinctive voices to create some of the most melodic tracks Herren has produced. SURROUNDED BY SILENCE is a dense, almost overwhelming release at first, but listeners who exercise patience are certain to be rewarded. SKU: 6583467

Compilation producer: Colin Escott. Recorded in Hollywood, California; Los Angeles, California; New Yorkbetween February 9, 1956 and November 1965. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. This is part of Verve's Jazz Masters series. It might seem odd to call a collection by Ella Fitzgerald THE JAZZ SIDES, but it's instructive to remember that during her years at Verve, Fitzgerald was as likely to essay familiar pop songs or Broadway show tunes as she was jazz standards. THE JAZZ SIDES gives particular focus to Fitzgerald's remarkable skills as a scat singer. Many jazz singers, even excellent ones, simply never get the hang of scat, a wordless vocal style that treats the human voice as a purely musical instrument. Good scat singing requires an intrinsic knowledge of the rules of musical improvisation, and great scat singing demands an ability to reshape the melodic lines of a song as well as any instrumental soloist. All through these 16 songs, from Juan Tizol's "Caravan" to the swing standard "The Music Goes 'Round and Around," Fitzgerald stuns the listener. SKU: 1002473

Ventilation: Da LP
Phife Dawg is former frontman of hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Producers include: Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, Jay Dee, Fred Wreck, Rick Rock. Recorded at The Cutting Room and Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York; Infinite Studios, Alameda, California; Patchwerk Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; Fred's Tilt, Los Angeles, California. All the time that rapper Phife Dawg spent at the helm of A Tribe Called Quest, he was completely embroiled in the group aesthetic, and that's a good thing. Otherwise, they might never have been able to assemble what amounts to one of the most impressive ouevres in all of what's come to be known as progressive hip-hop. But it seems that Phife's collectivism prevented him from ever exploring his ideas in a solo format--that is, until the release of VENTILATION: DA LP. On this inspired disc of forward-looking hip-hop, Phife takes the ideas he spawned during his Tribe days to new places. Lyrically, he's still in a class by himself, spinning rhymes with the best of them. But it's the idiosyncratic production touches and unique sense of song structure on VENTILATION that bespeaks the true innovation of which Phife is capable. This disc is recommended not only to fans of Tribe, but to anyone looking for a freshly cutroad in the often monochromatic world of hip-hop. SKU: 1044153

Music For Native Americans
Full performer name: Robbie Robertson & The Red Road Ensemble. Personnel includes: Robbie Robertson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Ulali, Priscilla Coolidge, The Silvercloud Singers (vocals); Denis Toupin (vocals, drums); Rejean Bouchard (electric guitar); Bill Dillon (guitar, guitorgan, chamberlin, bass); Daniel Jean (violin); Elodie Lauten (keyboards); Tony Green, Pierre Duchesne (bass); Sal Fararas, Benito Concha, Sebastian Robertson(drums); Alex Acuna (percussion); Jim Wilson, Dave Pickell (programming); Delphine Robertson, Claude Pelletter (background vocals). Producers: Robbie Robertson, Jim Wilson, Toby Gendron, Pierre Duchesne. Recorded at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California; River Sound, New York; Sound Concept, Montreal, Canada; Sunsinger Studios, Albuquerque, New Mexico. From the opening beats of "Coyote Dance" (a rhythm so ancient, Bo Diddley would be proud to claim it), to the whirligig of acoustic and electric sounds comprising "Ghost Dance," the listener is plunged into a world of tradition and technology--one that might suggest Enigma's synthesis of chant and techno to well-traveled listeners. Rock and roll rustic Robbie Robertson acknowledges and reappraises his own Mohawk legacy by producing and performing MUSIC FOR THE NATIVE AMERICANS. This soundtrack is moody, mysterious and deeply moving, evoking as it does the thoughts and words and traditions of the ancestors, and putting them in a thoroughly modern musical context--no Hollywood dances around the campfire for Robbie Robertson and his collaborators. Which is to say that MUSIC FOR THE NATIVE AMERICANS is concerned with imparting insights from a living tradition, not unearthing parables for a dead one. Thus on "The Vanishing Breed" the flute, keyboards and programming of Spotted Eagle embellish ceremonial rhythms with celestial orchestrations, celebrating the Native American's timeless spirit (as Robertson's guitar outlines a lyric expanse that might just as easily be found on a Pink Floyd disc), while "It Is A Good Day To Die" and "Words Of Fire, Deeds Of Blood" sum up the defiant spirit and courage of their forebears. Elsewhere, traditional materials such as "Akua Tuta" and the chant "Cherokee Morning Song" shimmer with peace and devotion. SKU: 5068578

Live At The Lyceum [Remastered]
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Al Anderson (guitar); Tyrone Downie (keyboards); Aston"Familyman" Barrett (bass); Crlton "Carly" Barrett (drums); Alvin "Seeco" Patterson (percussion). Additional personnel includes: Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals). Reissue producer: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded at The Lyceum, London, England on July 19, 1975. Originally released on Island (90032). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Nobody who likes music could fail to be emotionally moved by this album, and not just because Marley is no longer with us. It was a special live treat before he died. The great thing about this record is the feeling that this is what it was like every night, unlike other live recordings which capture one or two gigs of a tour. Marley was extra special and a giant of popular music. Wallow in this vital record and listen to a man who had something to say and yet had fun while he said it. Most of the tracks you would want to be on the record are here, including the definitive version of 'No Woman No Cry' and a funky 'Lively Up Yourself'. SKU: 1060967

Tracy Chapman
Personnel: Tracy Chapman (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Jack Holder (guitar, dobro, electric sitar, hammered dulcimer, Hammond organ); Ed Black (guitar); David LaFlamme (electric violin); Steve Kaplan, Bob Marlette (keyboards); Larry Klein (bass); Denny Fongheiser (drums, percussion); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Recorded at Powertrax, Hollywood, California. Tracy Chapman exploded out of the Boston folk scene in the late eighties, carrying the acoustic guitar-playing singer/songwriter mantle to a more political and socially conscious level than had recently been achieved. Her deep alto and throttled vocal delivery, combined with attentively scrutinized social scenarios presented in a simple, accessible manner, rocketed Tracy to the top of the charts and into the Grammy record books. Instrumentally crisp and minimal, TRACY CHAPMAN is a compelling statement from the no-holds-barred black singer/songwriter, stealing the focus away from the popular folk mafia. Chapman expresses a heretofore unmined black, feminist, disenfranchised point of view--from the helpless-but-hopeful underclass of the smash hit "Fast Car," to the defiant politicos of "Talkin' `Bout A Revolution." In regards to other issues, Tracy responds to Suzanne Vega's "Luka" with her own a capella song about domestic violence, "Behind The Wall"; andthe percussive "Mountains O' Things" is about material wealth. But TRACY CHAPMAN is not all social politics; there are several rapturously tender love songs included as well. There are many strong influences to be heard in Tracy's voice, particularly Joan Armatrading (on "Baby Can I Hold You") and Odetta. Infused with those powerful roots, Chapman dramatically changed the commercial stakes of folk music by blending a catchy, acoustic backdrop to her social rhetoric, and delivering her manifestos in a unique, commanding voice that seemed like a beacon in a sea of mediocrity. Wind, The
Personnel: Warren Zevon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, keyboards); Jorge Calderon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, tres, bass, maracas); Bruce Springsteen, Brad Davis (electric guitar, background vocals); Mike Campbell (electric guitar); Ry Cooder (guitar, slide guitar); Tommy Shaw (12-string guitar, background vocals); Randy Mitchell (slide guitar, background vocals); Joe Walsh (slide guitar); David Lindley (lap steel guitar, saz, background vocals); Gil Bernal (saxophone); James Raymond (piano); Reggie Hamilton (upright bass); Luis Conte (drums, bongos, congas, maracas, percussion); Don Henley, Jim Keltner, Steve Gorman (drums); Dwight Yoakam, Billy Bob Thornton, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty (background vocals). Producers: Warren Zevon, Jorge Calderon, Noah Scot Snyder. With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, despite a diagnosis that only gave Zevon three months to live. Along the way, plenty of famous names--both friends and fans--pitched in, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam and Don Henley. Allusions to his situation are naturally sprinkled throughout, whether it's partying in the face of doom ("The Rest of the Night"), using a self-penned blues song to look back with no regrets ("Rub Me Raw"), or pledging his eternal love ("El Amor De Mi Vida"). Even Zevon's cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," avoids the pitfall of sentimentality as hecan be heard bellowing "open up, open up" in the background of the song's chorus sung by Tommy Shaw, John Waite, and Billy Bob Thornton. "Keep Me in Your Heart" finds Zevon subtly asking just that, in a dignified manner guaranteed to mist up the eyes of even the most jaded person. SKU: 1086797

Vicious Cycle
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Johnny Van Zant (vocals); Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thomasson (guitar, background vocals); Gary Rossington (guitar); Billy Powell (keyboards); Ean Evans (bass); Michael Cartellone (drums); Carol Chase, Dale Krantz Rossington (background vocals). Additional personnel: Kid Rock. Guitarist Gary Rossington and keyboardist Billy Powell might be the only founding members left in thisincarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but rest assured that the awesome legacy of these southern rock giants remains intact on VICIOUS CYCLE. Vocalist Johnnie Van Zandt continues to fill his late brother's shoes while former members of Blackfoot (Ricky Medlocke) and the Outlaws (Hughie Thomasson) keep the spirit of the South alive throughout this album released to commemorate the band's 30th anniversary. Still as down-home as when they first emerged from Jacksonville, Florida in the early '70s, the members of Skynyrd have penned songs about the working man ("That's How I Like It"), love of America ("Red White and Blue"), and the right to protect one's family ("Dead Man Walking".) Although original bassist Leon Wilkeson passed on during the recording of CYCLE, his spirit lives on via two tracks he played on before his death, the heartfelt "Lucky Man" and impassioned "The Way," and he's honored on the somber tribute "Mad Hatter." Skynyrd fan Kid Rock is the cherry on this southern rock sundae when he appears on a scathing bonus remake of the band's classic "Gimme Back My Bullets." SKU: 1083310

Texas Flood [SACD]
This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris Layton (drums). Producers: Richard Mullen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Double Trouble. Principally recorded at Down Town Studio, Los Angeles, California and Riverside Sound, Austin, Texas. Live tracks recorded at The Palace, Hollywood, California on September 23, 1983. Originally released on Epic (38734). Includes liner notes by Michael Ventura. Quite possibly the only electric blues/rock guitarist to come near rivalling Jimi Hendrix, Vaughan, who, like Hendrix, died tragically, was so good he was ridiculous. He was lacking in really good material, and his own compositions were mainly guitar workouts, such as "Rude Mood," although he shows great feeling on the instrumental "Lenny." He is much more comfortable singing non-originals, and on this album he covers Buddy Guy's "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and Howlin Wolf's "Tell Me," but the listener is still waiting for the bit where the guitar solo comes in.Poor Double Trouble barely get a look in. This Is It (The Best Of Faith No More)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Original score composed by Stanley Clarke. Producers: Brian Grazer, Malcolm Lee, Bonnie Greenberg. The soundtrack to 2002's blaxploitation movie spoof UNDERCOVER BROTHER contains a wealth of bell-bottomed, wide-lapeled funk, from Wild Cherry's perennial"Play That Funky Music (White Boy)" to the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" (whose bass line alone has probably launched a million black-light-enhanced seductive endeavors). Though it's impossible to include everyone's period favorites, there's enough on offer here to ensure that no-one will leave unsatisfied. There's James Brown's '60s anthem "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)," which provides the gritty bedrock truth ("we've been duped, and we've been scorned...") beneath all the ironic comedy, Gil Scott Heron's incendiary, if mistaken, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," and Carl Carlton's excellent, rarely heard "She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)," whose salivating lyric obviously predates political correctness by several millennia. The usual suspects such as Kool And The Gang's "Ladies' Night" and the Commodores' "Brick House" are here too, naturally, and with more contemporary artistes such as Snoop Dogg and Lil'J to give the whole project some kind of historical framework, UNDERCOVER BROTHER is either an hour's worth of musical history or a mini groovefest, depending on your inclination. Blood In My Eye
Fourth album from New York rapper follows 2002's 'The Last Temptation' and eschews the slicker, more commercial style delivered on his recent recordings for a rough, raw, "back to the streets" approach designed to combat the rise ofyoung pretenders such as 50 Cent, who targeted many disses at Ja on his debut album. Nature Boy
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Cedar Walton (piano); David Williams (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York on June 12 & 13, 1999. While the youngsters may get all the press, it is the legendary masters who give us the most meaningful expression of any art form. Such is the case with Jackie McLean's NATURE BOY, as he carries his soulfully swinging style into the 21st century. What's more, McLean brings along the equally legendary sidemen Cedar Walton, David Williams, and Billy Higgins to realize this deeply moving setof standards. Like a fine wine, the music these seasoned craftsmen make is improved with the many years that have accumulated. McLean's signature alto wail grabs the listener from the beginning of the opening "You Don't Know What Love Is" and never lets go. He's as supple as ever on the dusky title track that begins with a moving rubato duet between he and Walton, but then gets a gentle prodding from Higgins' tasty rumba groove. Although you may have heard these, and other standards like "What Is This Thing Called Love," "Star Eyes," and "I Fall in Love too Easily," a thousand times before, it is nonetheless a special treat to hear such musical masters swing through them just one more time. Indeed, young and old alike can take a lesson from this session. SKU: 1030789

Thursday Afternoon [Digipak] [Remastered]
The whole of THURSDAY AFTERNOON consists of one 61-minute track, itself an edit of a much longer piece designed as the accompaniment for a video piece by artist Russell Mills. In the tradition of 19th century program music, THURSDAY AFTERNOON attempts to musically evoke the feelings of a specific experience. Amusingly, the experience being evoked is the tedium of a nondescript, unexciting day. While it's perhaps up to the individual listener as to whether this makes for an entirely satisfying listening experience, THURSDAY AFTERNOON is one of Brian Eno's most intellectually intriguing pieces. THURSDAY AFTERNOON stretches the concept of ambient music nearly to the breaking point--the piece consists almost entirely of single notesand simple chords held seemingly without end, with the occasional wash of piano notes wafting through. Or, to put it another way, nothing happens. Frequently. SKU: 6586098
