Get Yer Ya-ya's Out (The Rolling Stones Live In Concert) [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica); Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Mick Taylor (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel includes: Ian Stewart (piano). Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969. Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their threeyears away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain." Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The piece-de-resistance of what is arguably the best live Rolling Stones recording is the eight-minute-plus reading of "Midnight Rambler." Between Mick Jagger's unearthly harmonica playing and the tight interplay between Taylor and Keith Richards, the sinister vibe emanating from this song was eerie, foreshadowing the tragedy that would occur at Altamont less than two weeks later. Observant fans will catch the cover's subtle visual reference to a certain lyric from BLONDE ON BLONDE's "Visions of Johanna." SKU: 1076775

Led Zeppelin II
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic, electric & pedal steel guitar, background vocals); John Paul Jones (organ, bass, background vocals); John Bonham (drums, tympani, background vocals). Engineers include: George Chkiantz, Andrew Johns, Chris Huston. Recorded in London, England and New York, New York in 1969. From the first grinding notes of the famous vamp that introduces "Whole Lotta Love," LED ZEPPELIN II announces for all to hear that they are the definitive hard rock band of their generation. But before the listener can even settle into the groove, things takes a hard left turn into a spacey new rhythm, exotically flavored by Page's droning feedback and innovative use of a violin bow. By tune's end, Zeppelin has repeatedly toyed with the listener's expectations. This subversive quality distinguishes most of the arrangements on LED ZEPPELIN II, as in the soft/hard dynamic shifts of "What Is And What Should Never Be," the gospelish mood of "Thank You," the rocking vamps and funk rhythms of "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid," and the country music echoes of "Ramble On." And in their appropriations of source materials from Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, and Sonny BoyWilliamson, Page and company continued to mine the rich vein of the blues. SKU: 1084111

Closer (+DVD)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Josh Groban (vocals); Leo Z. (piano, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Angie Passerella (acoustic & Classical guitars); Dean Parks, Ramon Stagnaro, Michael Thompson (guitar); Joshua Bell (violin); Devis Mariotti (flute, whistle, background vocals); Eric Rigler (Uillean pipes); David Foster (piano); Mark Hammond (keyboards, programming); David Fall (drums); Raphael Padila (percussion); Jochem Van Der Saag (programming); Richard Page, Andrea Sandri (background vocals); Deep Forest. Producers: David Foster, Walter Afanasieff, Leo Z., Mauro Malavasi, Eric Mouquet. Recorded at Chartmaker Studios, Malibu, California. This release contains a bonus DVD featuring footage of the making of CLOSER. Powerhouse vocalist Josh Groban may not be all things to all people, but he's certainly many things to many people. An international sensation, Groban is a Broadway-ready belter, romantic crooner, and classical/pop crossover phenomenon. Groban largely shies away from the more operatic side of his musical personality on CLOSER, leaning more towards a lush, cosmopolitan style that finds him singing in Italian, French, Spanish, and English with equal aplomb. While the album is speckled with adult-contemporary pop production touches courtesy of Groban's mentor David Foster, much of the record sports a cinematic, grandly orchestrated feel. And on the closing track "Never Let Go," his collaboration with ambient popsters Deep Forest, Groban even bucks for inclusion on a future volume of the PURE MOODS series, showing that he's always got another stylistic surprise up his sleeve. Personal Christmas Collection
Personnel includes: Doris Day (vocals); John Rarig, Pete King (conductor); George Siravo. Compilation producer: Didier C. Deutsch. Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch. These are some of the most familiar songs ever written; they've been recorded by just about everybody who has ever stepped up to a microphone. It's easy to take them for granted as they're played on TV, over the radio, in shopping malls, and in elevators every December, year after year. Doris Day revives and restores this material. Her voice, like a cozy fire, has a sensual sweetness that conjures the Christmas experience at its best. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and Jack Frost nipping at your toes are tangible when Day's perfect tones setthe "Christmas Song" aglow. Her tenderness and perfect pitch make her the ultimate Christmas caroler. You may have heard these songs countless times, but Doris Day makes them glitter as few others can. SKU: 1009387

Feed Me Weird Things
Squarepusher includes: Tom Jenkinson. While DJs were busy squabbling over the distinction between "intelligent" drum-and-bass and "stupid" floor-fodder, 21-year-old Tom Jenkinson dropped "Squarepusher Theme" and bombed all other practitioners of the breakbeat science back to the Stone Age. This virtually unknown Cornwall resident had rewritten the rulebook for both the "drum" and "bass" factors of the popular dancehall equation. Jenkinson's supremely sweet, funky, and unabashedly bravado fretless chops likened him to nimble-fingered fusioneer Jaco Pastorius; his breathlessly dynamic and acrobatic rhythms bespoke a singular imagination. Squarepusher is freakishly inventive--by turns moody ("Tundra," "Goodnight Jade," "U.F.O.s OverLeytonstone"), manic ("North Circular," "The Swifty," "Windscale 2"), mad as a March hare ("Dimotane Co," the laugh-out-loud funny "Smedley's Melody," "Future Gibbon"), and flat-out brilliant ("Kodack"). On "Theme From Ernest Borgnine," Jenkinson cribs melodies from U-Ziq and the Aphex Twin (whose Rephlex label issued FEED ME) and betrays his electronica roots. But Squarepusher's dazzling breaks-work is utterly without precedent. The impact of his upheaval of drum-and-bass convention had dulled slightly by the time of FEED ME's release. Too many copycats had run with his formula in every direction but originality. Nonetheless, this remains an astonishing record--perhaps the pinnacle of jazzed-up, schizoid outsider drum-n-bass. American Prayer, An (Music By The Doors)
The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel includes: Bob Glaub, Jerry Scheff (bass); Reinol Andino (percussion); Arthur Barrow (programming). Producers include: Paul A. Rothchild, Bruce Botnick, The Doors. Engineers include: Bruce Botnick. AN AMERICAN PRAYER is made up of recordings of Jim Morrison reading his own poetry, to which the remaining members of the Doors added musical tracks, after his death. The CD reissue of AN AMERICAN PRAYER includes a newly recorded backing for "The Ghost Song." "I'll tell you every place and person that I've been." Cobalt blue and dour all over, AN AMERICAN PRAYER is primarily an up-close studio collage of Jim Morrison'sverse (read by the author) spread over glorious Doors-rock, interspersed with live snatches of the singer/poet's on-stage antics. The images here evoke the seedy underbelly of post-hippie America, the disturbingly familiar manifestations of a troubled national conscience. The recording does, however, manage to maintain a sparkling psychedelic quality throughout. Several of the songs will be familiar to those who own the soundtrack to the 1991 film The Doors, but the original context gives them more weight. The title track is like a combined reprise to "Ghost Song" and the classic "The End," replete with Morrison's strange questions and even strangers assertions. The band sounds crisp, playing music that has a distinctively '70s thrust. Robby Krieger's guitar rips as fluidly as ever. All in all, a candid tour through the dimly lit passages of a haunted soul--at once personal and quite American. SKU: 5060330

Endtroducing...
Recorded at The Glue Factory, San Francisco, California. Though the sleeve notes of DJ Shadow's exhilarating long-playing debut speak of his devotion to "vinyl culture" and "sample-based music" (a guide of which is contained within), it's all just double-speak for hip-hop. Undoubtedly, this is the musical culture that lit up the life of young Cali-boy Josh Davis, inspiring him to construct these vocal-less, found-sound collages. Not the hip-hop that a dime-a-dozen MCs have turned into a cartoonish, excess-filled formula, but the hip-hop of such sonic anarchist producers as Afrika Bambaataa and The Bomb Squad. To put it mildly, DJ Shadow sides with the dope beats, not the blandblah-blah-blah. Shadow's skills with a drum machine power ENDTRODUCING... as much as his innovative def-ness with a sampler--which says a lot for someone who's been called the Jimi Hendrix of sampling. The songs shift tempos in a blink, incorporating multiple time-signatures, and it's to Shadow's credit that he's as comfortable hinting at Elvin Jones' or Dave Grohl's rhythmic attacks as he is citing old faithfuls like Clyde Stubblefield. His wide array of samples color the album's beat-heavy text. Ethereal horns, ambient keyboards, orchestral strings, vocoder vocals, whole film scenes--each is made a part of the sweeping focus, part of a grand postmodern design. SKU: 1001202

Ixnay On The Hombre
The Offspring: Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar); Noodles (guitar, vocals); Greg K (bass); Ron Welty (drums). Additional personnel: Jello Biafra (spoken vocals); Calvert DeForest, John Mayer, Jason "Blackball" McLean (vocals); Paulinho DaCosta (percussion); Davey Havoc (background vocals). Recorded at Eldorado Recording Studio, Hollywood, California. So the Offspring jumped ship from California proto-indie Epitaph to corporate behemoth Columbia. So what? Anyone who thinks going for the brass ring is less than "punk" should remember thatback in the days of No Future, the Sex Pistols, the Clash and their brethren set their sights on nothing less than total world domination. Despite their proletarian orientations, the godfathers of punk were determined to become rock stars in order to shove their messages down the world's collective throat. So, don't give the Offspring any grief for taking that leap 20 years later, when it means a hell of a lot less. Contrary to punk expectations, there are no string sections or Tom Scott sax solos on IXNAY ON THE HOMBRE. The band's songs still leap off the disc with the same breakneck beat and aggressive guitar attack as on previous Offspring releases. Sure, the band has expanded its sound a bit; with the help of Jane's Addiction producer Dave Jerden, several songs sound more than a little like, well, Jane's Addiction. But better that than allow the music to stagnate in order to meet unreasonable expectations about "authenticity." Don't worry, dude, the Offspring still rocks. SKU: 1004973

Wide World Over, The (The Very Best Of The Chieftains/A 40 Year Celebration)
This a companion disc to a later release of 2002, DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD, celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Chieftains. The Chieftainsinclude: Kevin Conneff (vocals, bodhran); Sean Keane (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, keyboards, tiompan); Matt Molloy (flute); Paddy Moloney (whistle, Uilleann pipes). Additional personnel includes: Sinead O'Connor, The Coors, Ricky Skaggs, Joni Mitchell, Diana Krall, Sting, Linda Rondstat, Los Lobos, Erich Kunzel, The Cincinnati Pops, Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones. Engineers include: Brian Masterson, Jeffrey Lesser, Warren Peterson. Recorded between 1987 and 2002. All tracks have been digitally remastered. There are few groups so closely and unalterably associated with their home country as the Chieftains. These carriers of the traditional Irish folk torch had spent 40 years as Ireland's musical ambassadors by the time of this commemorative collection. On the one hand, they're unquestionably fine at laying down Irish tunes in the grand old style with bodhran and pipes blazing away (as on such tradition-minded fare as "Mo Ghile Mear" and the medley involving "King of Laois" and "Paddy's Jig." On the other, they've always been open to collaboration with artists from every corner of the music world, whether it's a former new wave hellion like Elvis Costello searching for his roots on "Long Journey Home" or countryman Van Morrison sounding entirely at home joining the lads for the evocative folk song "Shenandoah." As THE WIDE WORLD OVER makes abundantly clear, a large part of the Chieftains gift is in knowing how to mix the old and the new without compromise on either side of the equation. SKU: 1070080

Cypress Hill
Cypress Hill: B-Real, Sen-Dog, D.J. Muggs. Recorded at Image Recording, Los Angeles, California. Latinos have been flexing their influence within hip-hop culture at least since the late '70s, when deejays like Charlie Chase and b-boy crews like the Rockwell Association and the infamous Rocksteady Crew made their presence felt at block parties and battles in the Bronx and uptown Manhattan. Throughout the '80s, Spanglish rappers like Kid Frost and (Sen-Dog's older brother) Mellow Man Ace saw some commercial success. But it wasn't until 1991 that a crew brought the Spanish language and sensibility into a hip-hop context at the level where it not only reached mainstream audiences, but also transcended ethnic lines within the inner city. Cypress Hill isthat crew. Their production style (crafted by DJ Muggs, a transplant to LA from the east coast), takes lessons from Prince Paul and the Bomb Squad, but tempered with a distinctly west coast feel reminiscent of the Los Angelino funk of War and Carlos Santana. Vocally, B Real and Sen-Dog achieve an off-kilter balance not unlike the counterpoint between Chuck D's boom and Flavor Flav's singsong interjections. Similarly, their lyrical content negotiates a truce between the urgency of NWA and the playful taunts of the Beastie Boys, interlaced with Spanish vocabulary. SKU: 1003940

I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Bright Eyes: Conor Oberst (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jesse Harris (guitar); Mike Mogis (pedal steel guitar, mandolin); Tim Luntzel (bass guitar). Additional personnel: Emmylou Harris, Jim James, Andy LeMaster (vocals); Nick Walcott (trumpet); Nick White (organ). Recording information: Presto., Lincoln, Nebraska (02/2004). In early 2005, young indieicon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music. I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, but not quite, out of control. Oberst's eccentric vocal delivery makes his pairings here with ever-graceful harmony singer Emmylou Harris intriguing, particularly on the rambling shuffle of "Another Travellin' Song." Although Oberst manages to work up plenty of energy on some tracks, the quieter tunes, including the dreamy New York City narrative "Lua," are the album's highlights, revealing hushed melodies that showcase his maturing songcraft. Philadelphia Freeway [PA]
Personnel: Freeway, Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Nate Dogg, Peedi Crakk, Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Young Gunz, Sparks (rap vocals); Mariah Carey, Faith Evans, Allen Anthony (vocals); Just Blaze (various instruments). Producers include: Kanye West, E-Bass, Ruggedness, Bink, Just Blaze. On PHILADELPHIA FREEWAY, rapper Freeway debuts with an enigmatic, instantly recognizable vocal style that eschews the gruff, slurring, tough-guy shouting of many gangsta hip-hop artists in favor of a punchy, higher-pitched style that often recalls the Old School pioneers. Don't be fooled, though--there aren't any block party anthems here; this is aggressive, hardcore stuff. Freeway has a take-no-prisoners approach that often sounds like a fist in the face. Just Blaze's production matches perfectly, using beats that containelements of jungle to give each track a manic intensity. Standouts include "On My Own," for which Nelly provides a characteristically hooky chorus that imprints itself on the listener's brain after a single listen, and "Life," which uses an Eddie Money (!) sample to paint an unnerving picture of ghetto survival. Bruised Orange
Cassette available on Elektra/Asylum (139) as of January, 1992. NOTES: Recorded at the Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, Illinois from January to March 1978. Includes original liner notes and artwork. Prine rode out the '70s by merely allowing his deceptively simple songs speak for themselves. After being heralded as the Second Coming, the new Dylan, and the prince of all folk singers great and small, he got back to basics with longtime buddy and fellow songwriter-producer Steve Goodman. BRUISED ORANGE sweeps away every particle of unnecessary debris, resulting in Prine's most affecting release since his auspicious debut. The secret is in the simplicity. "Fish and Whistle" illuminates the everyday affairs of car washes, shoveling snow, and chasing women with economical humor. There's nary awasted word or guitar line in the song, or the entire album, for that matter. Prine is a writer devoid of cynicism, preferring the more rewarding road of wry observation and embracing the absurdity of existing in a topsy-turvy world. It's summed up perfectly with "Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone," in which the famed elephant boy embarks on a disastrous tour of the mid-west in hopes of reviving his flagging movie career. Instead of bleating over his own middling commercial recognition, Prine turns the fickle business of entertainment on its head and leaves self-pity and sour grapes in the dust. SKU: 1013665

Live Insurrection
Halford: Rob Halford (vocals); Mike Chlasciak, Patrick Lachman (guitar); Ray Riendeau (4- & 5-string basses); Bobby Jarzombek (drums). Additional personnel: Bruce Dickinson (vocals). Engineersinclude: Eric Kuglin, Tony Harris, Sven Hertens. LIVE INSURRECTION is a massive two-disc testimonial to Rob Halford in the new millennium. The production is extremely high quality; a cursory perusal of the liner notes reveals that some of these cuts include soundchecks and sessions on non-show days. While these details might throw into question some of LIVE INSURRECTION's live credentials, what's unquestionable is that it's a perfect blend of Halford's solo catalog and Judas Priest classics. Halford is in great voice throughout, sounding as menacing and powerful in 2000 as he did in 1974. A brand new studio track, the devastating "Screaming in the Dark," closes out the set, followed by two undated demos that could be lost Judas Priest songs, especially considering the credited writing contributions of Judas Priest guitarists K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton. SKU: 1058479

Where You Want To Be [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Taking Back Sunday: Fred Mascherino (vocals, guitar); Adam Lazzara (vocals); Eddie Reyes (guitar); Matthew Rubana (bass guitar); Mark O'Connell (drums). Long Island, New York's Taking Back Sunday debuted in 2002 with TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS, analbum that encapsulated the more accessible side of the East Coast emo-core sound. The band garnered a loyal following by combining sparklingly clean production, a razor-sharp guitar sound, and vocals that mixed the youthful optimism and energy of pop-punk with rigorous self-examination. On WHERE YOU WANT TO BE, Taking Back Sunday improves on a winning formula by exploring more diverse arrangements while retaining the group's trademark melancholy forcefulness. On "Set Phasers to Stun," the ensemble cops a Police-like rhythmic vibe, while "New American Classic" is a moving acoustic ballad complemented by Nick Drake-like strings. On this sophomore outing, Taking Back Sunday shows it isn't afraid to venture into new sonic territory. SKU: 6570872
