Outlaws And Angels
Willie Nelson & Friends: Toby Keith, Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Joe Walsh (vocals, electric guitar); Al Green, Lee Ann Womack, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Shelby Lynne, The Holmes Brothers, Toots Hibbert, Carole King (vocals); Merle Haggard (acoustic guitar); Keith Richards, Kid Rock (electric guitar); Ben Harper (electric slide guitar); Jerry Lee Lewis (piano); Los Lonely Boys. Additional guest personnel: Carole King; Ben Harper. Recording information: 05/05/2004. Though he was already a musical icon of inarguable standing, Willie Nelson became something of an officially acknowledged national treasure after his 70th birthday in 2003. This is exemplified by the live album OUTLAWS & ANGELS, documenting a concert where some of the biggest stars from all walks of the musical world joined Willie to pay tribute to his work and his enduring influence. Some of the artists included won't raise any eyebrows; for instance, fellow country legend Merle Haggard is on hand for several tunes, including his own classic "Mama Tried" and the Townes Van Zandt-penned story-song "Pancho & Lefty." Less predictable are appearances by reggae pioneer Toots Hibbert (on the Toots & the Maytals signature song "Pressure Drop" and thelatter-day Nelson composition "Still Is Still Moving to Me," which adapts surprisingly well to a reggae feel), Kid Rock, and Carole King. A particularly notable moment is blues band the Holmes Brothers' take on Willie's old heartbreak anthem "Opportunity to Cry," which adds an extra dash of soul. While hardcore Willie fans might be just as happy to hear the man all by himself, the stellar guest list of OUTLAWS & ANGELS merely confirms what those fans have known all along--that Willie Nelson is one of America's most accomplished singer/songwriters, bar none. Why Don't You Do Right
Personnel includes: Peggy Lee, Art London (vocals); Nappy LaMare, Dave Barbour (guitar); Benny Goodman, Barney Bigard (clarinet); Les Robinson (alto saxophone); Bernie Priven, Shorty Cherard (trumpet); Lou McGarity (trombone); Mel Powell (piano, celeste); Sid Catlett (drums). Recorded between 1941 & 1946. Includes liner notes by Brian Rust. Digitally remastered by Martin Haskell. This release is jam-packed with tunes featuring one of the greatest singers and bands to emerge from the swing era. By the 1950s, Peggy Lee would be one of the top performers in the world. At the time of "Elmer's Tune" she was just beginning her career. Her voice is pure in these early tracks with the Benny Goodman band, and her lilting tone fits in fine. Within months she becomes quite a different Peggy Lee. She grew up in the Goodman band, and rather quickly; "Somebody Else is Taking My Place" shows that she is now as in control of the material as Benny Goodman is with his masterful clarinet. After marrying guitarist Dave Barbour, husband and wife go out on their own. "It's A Good Day" has a bouncy rhythm and a vibrant feeling. Remarkable changesare evident throughout this WHY DON'T YOU DO RIGHT, yet they were just the beginning of great things to come for Peggy Lee. SKU: 1071608

7800 Degrees Fahrenheit [ECD] [Remastered]
Cassette available on (824 509). NOTES: Full title: 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit. Bon Jovi: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals, guitar); Richie Sambora (acoustic 6-string, acoustic 12-string & electric guitars, background vocals); David Bryan (keyboards, background vocals); Alec John Such (bass, background vocals); Tico Torres (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tom Mandel (synthesizer); Randy Cantor, Jim Salamone (programming); Rick Valenti, Jeaanie Brooks, Carol Brooks, Phil Hoffer (background vocals). Engineers include: Larry Alexander, Obie O'Brien, Bill Scheniman. Recorded at The Warehouse, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). From the first mega-chorus shout of the album-opening "In and Out of Love," it's obvious that 7800 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT marks an evolution from Bon Jovi's debut. The image got bigger and so did the sound. The album went gold, and a year later the band shot to the stratosphere with SLIPPERY WHEN WET. "The Price of Love" isa tight, well-written rocker categorized by its memorable Bon Jovi hook. "Only Lonely" is perfect pop metal with a great riff and even catchier solo. "Silent Night" is a true power ballad, before the term denoted the mandatory first single from every hair band. "Tokyo Road," the band's homage to far-Eastern pleasures, is a consistent live favorite. "The Hardest Part Is the Night" is a mid-tempo rocker that features a creative solo from Richie Sambora. Tico Torres lets loose on the skins on the blistering and gritty "Always Run to You." A mid-'80s crunchy metal riff combines with a polished keyboard-crafted instrumental frame of "Secret Dreams." Bon Jovi took melody and heavy rock to the next level on this thoroughly mature effort. SKU: 1000401

Swordfish (Original Soundtrack)
Original score composed by Paul Oakenfeld. Trance master Paul Oakenfold takes a stab at film composing with the soundtrack to this John Travolta cyber-espionage thriller. In creating music (and remixing other artists) for a film about computer hacking and international intrigue, Oakenfold keeps the tempo for SWORDFISH moving along at a fairly quick pace. The best remixes here include the slamming beats and undulating house vibe permeatingJan Johnston's "Unafraid" and the swooshing synths and jackhammer beats that find the British-born DJ exposing his inner Giorgio Moroder on Muse's "New Born." Elsewhere, the Kraftwerk samples found in Afrika Bambaataa's classic "Planet Rock" get beefed up and Oakenfold's dalliance with hip-hop extends to the Outkast-flavored remix of "Lapdance," featuring Nerd, Lee Harvey and Vita. Other highlights include the fusion of ambient swaths of sound and breakneck beats on the Planet Perfecto team-up "Get Out Of My Life Now" and the hard-driving Christopher Young collaboration "On Your Mind" featuring dialogue snippets of Travolta and Halle Berry from the film. My Fair Lady
Music composed by Frederick Lowe. Lyrics written by Alan Jay Lerner. Principal cast includes: Rex Harrison (Professor Henry Higgins); Julie Andrews (Eliza Dolittle); Robert Coote (Colonel Pickering); Stanley Holloway (Mr. Dolittle); Philippa Bevans (Mrs. Pearce). Recorded at Columbia 30th St. Studios, New York, New York on March 25, 1956. Originally released on Columbia (5090). Includes liner notes by Dick Scanlan. All tracks have been digitally remastered. MY FAIR LADY is one of the great musicals of all time, combining a compelling story, magnetic personalities, and a truly mesmerizing score. From the start, Lerner and Loewe's adaptation of Shaw's PYGMALION was a tremendous success both on Broadway and the London stage. And in keeping with the show's phenomenal track record, the original cast recording spent nearly 300 weeks on the Billboard Top 40, for a while even out-grossing the stage production itself. In a rare stroke of luck or genius--whichever one prefers--everything came together flawlessly on this recording. The score itself is a gem, and the cast that performs it here is perfectly suited to deliver all its charms. Rex Harrison'sinimitable talk-singing and Stanley Holloway's music-hall style are at their best, and even just hearing the performers one can almost visualize the scene onstage. But above all, it's the voice of a young Julie Andrews that steals the show, showcasing timeless numbers such as "The Rain in Spain" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." SKU: 4122856

Natural Mystic [Remastered]
Producers include: Bob Marley & The Wailers, Alex Sadkin, Steve Smith, Chris Blackwell, Lee Perry. Compilation producers: Chris Blackwell, Trevor Wyatt, Bill Levenson. Includes liner notes by Chris Salewicz. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Poet, prophet, musical innovator--Bob Marley was all these things and more. Born and raised in the trenchtown slums of Jamaica, Marley's name became synonymous with reggae and Rastafarianism during a career that made him a hero to the many--particularly those in Third World communities--who saw him as a symbol of self-empowerment and cultural pride. NATURAL MYSTIC is an addendum to LEGEND, a compilation that gave millions of people their first taste of the magic of Robert Nesta Marley. While much of the material on LEGEND leans towards love songs, MYSTIC dives headlong into Marley's more politicized and religious-themed works. On the opening title track, he warns of how "one and all got to face reality now" in a world of massive upheaval and change. Other songs explore salvation through oneness ("Africa Unite"), the greed that propels the world towards an inevitable Armageddon ("So Much Trouble In The World") and Marley's own role as a persecuted leader ("Iron Lion Zion"). The magic that was part of his and The Wailers' live shows erupts in the included version of "Trenchtown Rock" which has an infectuousness that demands a rhythmic response. And the inclusion of "Easy Skanking" shows a meditative and laid-back Marley, partaking in Jamaica's most profitable cash crop during a spiritual time-out amidst the chaos of everyday life. Since his death from cancer in 1981, no one hasmade music that crosses as many lines--musical, spiritual, political--as Bob Marley did. NATURAL MYSTIC reinforces the idea that Marley's message lives on in his music, and that we're all better off for it. SKU: 1072353

Those Were The Days
THOSE WERE THE DAYS is a four-disc set, the first half consisting of Cream's entire studio output and the last half featuring the band's concert performances. The package includes a 48-page booklet full of previously unpublished photos. Cream: Jack Bruce (vocals, acoustic guitar, cello, harmonica, piano, organ, bass); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: George Harrison (guitar); Felix Pappalardi (viola, organ, trumpet, tonette, Swiss hand bells, piano, mellotron, bass). Producers: Robert Stigwood, Felix Pappalardi, Ahmet Ertegun. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson Engineers include: John Timperly, Tom Dowd, Adrian Barber. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. In the two years they were together, Cream's blend of blues, psychedelic rock and quirky lyricism forever altered the definition of rock music. After releasing four seminal albums, Cream broke up as quickly as they had come together, with all three members going on to solo careers of great acclaim. THOSE WERE THE DAYS brings together Cream's musical output in a deluxe four-CD set that's neatly halved between studio and live material. Meticulously compiled and remastered, DAYS includes every studio recording the band ever released, as well as previously unreleased demos, masters, rare and alternate takes. The live halfof the box set is primarily culled from seminal performances at legendary venues like San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore West. The sound has been considerably cleaned up allowing the listener to hear every nuance of these extended flights of jazz-flavored blues-rock improvisation. The package surrounding Cream's timeless musical output sports a DISRAELI GEARS-style day-glo cover and a 48-page color book. The accompanying notes, complemented by dozens of previously unpublished photos, provide an intimate glimpse into the brief, but groundbreaking career of the original power trio. SKU: 1001880

Essential Bruce Springsteen, The
Initial pressings included a limited edition bonus disc featuring previously unreleased studios and live performances. Personnel includes: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, harmonica, recorder, bass); Patti Scialfa (vocals, guitar); Nils Lofgren (guitar, slide guitar, dobro, banjo, background vocals); Steve Van Zandt (guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Danny Frederici (accordion, piano, organ, Farfisa organ, glockenspiel, background vocals); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Garry Tallent (tuba, bass, background vocals); Roy Bittan (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, pump organ, keyboards, synthesizer, glockenspiel, background vocals); David Sancious (piano, electric piano, organ, Clavinet); Max Weinberg (drums, background vocals); Soozie Tyrell (background vocals). Producers includes: Bruce Springsteen, Mike Appel, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin, Steve Van Zandt. Recorded between 1973 & 2002. If you're looking for a definitive Bruce Springsteen collection, search no further. THE ESSENTIAL BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN covers every phase of the Boss's career, from the Dylan-inspired absurdist folk-rock of his 1973 debut, through the Brando-with-a-Telecaster pathos of DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, to the Spectorian grandeur of BORN TO RUN and the stark, existential folk of NEBRASKA. And that's just the first disc. The second goes on to document Springsteen's superstar period with cuts from the epochal BORN IN THE USA and the moody, stripped-down TUNNEL OF LOVE, on through his post-9/11 mission statement, THE RISING. For hardcore fans that already own everything on the first two CDs, there's a bonus disc of rarities--none of which appeared on the prolific songwriter's rarities box set, TRACKS. The brightest spots of disc three are easily the equal of Springsteen's best-known material. Bruce's own version of "From Small Things" (covered successfully by Dave Edmunds), a furious live version of the working man's lament "Held Up Without a Gun," and the gorgeously evanescent "County Fair" are worth the price of admission all by themselves. True toits promise, this collection perfectly captures the essence of the gifted Jersey boy's magic. SKU: 1088573

Holy Bible, The
Manic Street Preachers: James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitar); Richey James (guitar); Nicky Wire (bass); Sean Moore (drums). All songs written by Manic Street Preachers. The tragic and unresolved disappearance of Richey Edwards looms larger than life every time this album is played. Just as they were being hailed as the potential "next big thing," the band was throwninto disarray, and as a result, this credible album was somewhat overlooked while the world searched for Richey. Now that the dust has settled and people have accepted his likely demise, this album can at last be appreciated. Even though the spoken introduction "Of Walking Abortion" is spookily prophetic, the understated quality of all the songs puts this album much closer to the gigantic EVERYTHING MUST GO than its success would indicate. Iowa
Slipknot: Corey (vocals); Mick, James (guitar); Paul (bass); Joey (drums); Shawn, Chris (percussion); Craig (samples); Sid (DJ). Recorded at Sound City and Sound Image, Van Nuys, California. "Left Behind" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. The two most anticipated hard rock/heavy metal releases of 2001 were unquestionable Tool's LATERALUS and Slipknot's sophomore effort, IOWA. The nine-piece masked band has returned with another platter of bile-spitting, hate-filled rage rock, certain to please fans oftheir self-titled 1999 debut. Despite the debut instantly making the band a promising metal contender (going platinum with absolutely no radio or MTV play), the intensity level hasn't dipped in the slightest on their second platter. Producer Ross Robinson is once again back on board, and IOWA delivers from beginning to end, as evidenced by such angst-filled, explosive tracks as "People = Shit," "The Heretic Anthem," and "Left Behind," to name but a few. IOWA is surely destined to be the album that catapults Slipknot to the top of the heavy metal heap. It serves as the perfect soundtrack for disaffected teenage metalheads the world over. SKU: 1062891

Real Gone [Digipak]
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, guitar, chamberlin); Marc Ribot (guitar, banjo); Larry Taylor (guitar, bass guitar); Harry Cody (guitar); Les Claypool (bass guitar); Casey Waits (drums, percussion, turntables); Brain (percussion); Mark Howard (bells). There have been many incarnations of Tom Waits--the boozy piano balladeer, the arch Kurt Weill acolyte, the bold sonic experimentalist--but the one that pops up on REAL GONE is probably most akin to the raw, howling, modern primitive of BONE MACHINE. As he did on that 1992 album, Waits gets in touch with his inner Captain Beefheart on REAL GONE. Instead of employing arrangements that merely suggest the accompaniment of a FAT ALBERT-style junkyard band, Waits actually sounds like he's hooting and hollering in the middle of a Salvation Army scrapyard, albeit one populated by junkmen with an inherent simpatico for his medium. The absence of piano is significant--Waits's jazzy harmonic underpinning is entirely dismantled here, leaving only the most basic, blues-oriented structures atop which Waits hangs his distinctive poetic imagery, at once surreal and highly detailed. There's an overwhelming sense of darkness ("How's It Gonna End," "Dead and Lovely"), but there are also moments of pure unfettered glee "Metropolitan Glide,""Shake It"), which are often goosed along by Waits's son Casey on turntables and percussion. A perennial romantic, Waits does let in a little melodic sunshine on the poignant closing ballad, "Day After Tomorrow," but for the most part, REAL GONE is a deliriously wild ride. SKU: 6570037

Stories From The City Stories From The Sea
Full title: Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Personnel: P.J. Harvey (vocals, guitar, E-bow, piano, keyboards, bass, djembe, maracas); Thom York (vocals, keyboards); Mick Harvey (accordion, harmonium, organ, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, background vocals); Rob Ellis (acoustic & electric pianos, harpsichord, keyboards, synthesizer, drums, bells, tambourine, background vocals). Producers: PJ Harvey, Rob Ellis, Mick Harvey. STORIES FROM THE CITY, STORIES FROM THE SEA was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "This Is Love" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Polly Harvey in a mellow mood? Actually, sort of. While her trademark feminist angst is still largely in place here, by and large the music is less confrontational than in days of yore. Several of the tracks--"Good Fortune," "A Place Called Home," "One Line"--verge on pop; in fact, they could pass for slightly more abstract Pretenders songs ("You Said Something" really does sound like Chrissie Hynde singing a mutant country tune). Given its title, it's not much of a surprise that "The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore," manages to work up a convincingly atonal guitar racket, but otherwise the only song that really captures Harvey's trademark Captain Beefheart-like fury is (again, unsurprisingly, given its title) "Kamikaze." Other highlights include "Big Evil," which centers around a biting neo-psychedelic riff (sort of "Paperback Writer" gone dissonant), the hypnotically pretty "This Mess We're In," a sort of early Cure pastiche done as a duet with Radiohead's Thom Yorke, and the concluding "We Float," a piano-driven ode to making peace with your failures that Harvey sings with a sweetness that's almost inspirational. Penetrator
Personnel: Ted Nugent (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass); Brian Howe (vocals); Alan St. Jon (keyboards, background vocals); Doug Lubahn (bass); Peter Wolf (percussion, sequencing); Kevin Russell, Todd Howarth, Cynthia Shiloh, Zoe Fox, Rahni Raines (background vocals). Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York, July 1983. Includes liner notes by Gary Graff. Although Ted Nugent's 1982 pop metal overhaul, NUGENT, didn't replicate the success of other rock bands who used the formula for chart success (Van Halen, etc.), Nugent refused to give in, continuing in the aforementioned direction on his follow-up one year later, PENETRATOR. Singer/rhythm guitarist Derek St. Holmes was out of the band once again, and in came British singer Brian Howe (who would eventually replace Paul Rodgers in Bad Company). Thoughthe material isn't exactly on par with such past Nuge classics as FREE FOR ALL, Ted's guitar licks are still up to snuff, as evidenced on such standouts as the album-opening "Tied Up in Love."
