Salesman And Bernadette, The
Personnel includes: Vic Chesnutt (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, Fender Rhodes); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Alex McManus (acoustic & electric guitars, whistle, accordion, euphonium, background vocals); Paul Niehaus (electric & pedal steel guitars, whistle, baritone saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Kurt Wagner (electric & lap steel guitars, whistle, recorder, background vocals); Tina Chesnutt (electric guitar, whistle, bass, background vocals); Jonathan Marx (whistle, clarinet, trumpet, percussion, background vocals); Deanna Varagona (whistle, baritone saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Marc Trovillion (whistle, bass, percussion, background vocals); Allen Lowrey (whistle, drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Treasure Isle, Quad, The Castle and Wedgetone, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Vic Chesnutt. Singer-Songwriter Chesnutt is the kind of gifted weirdo for whom the term "cult hero" was invented. Somehow the folks at Capitol got the idea that they could make him a star (maybe it was the Michael Stipe association). Presumably, after coming to terms with the fate of unconventional artists like Chesnutt in the music marketplace, they handed SALESMAN AND BERNADETTE off to Capricorn Records. That's not to say this isn't the most fully realized, (relatively) broad-scale work Chesnutt's done--backed by his buddies Lambchop, he turns observation into art again and again here. Over a pillow of lush, largely acoustic instrumentation, he tackles everything from "Arthur Murray" to "Woodrow Wilson" with equal quirky aplomb. His southern drawl is at its most expressive here, and on some cuts he emotes to a previously unimagined extent. As ever, his combination of surreal poetry and everyday imagery makes for some winning, highly individualistic compositions. SKU: 1005430

Round Midnight
Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Rachel Gould (vocals); Jean-Paul Florens (guitar); Henri Florens (piano); Jim Richardson (bass); Tony Mann (drums). Recorded at John Melner Studios, London, England on September 4 & 5, 1979. Includes liner notes by Hein Van de Geyn. ROUND MIDNIGHT sticks to the standards, opening with a haunting version of the title track, a simple and stark dialogue between Chet Baker's trumpet and Jean-Paul Floren's lyrical guitar playing. The rest of the tracks are recorded with a quartet, sometimes substituting guitar for piano, while three tracks feature Rachel Gould's androgynous vocals. Obviously influenced by Baker's vocal style, Gould's voice has a slick quality that lacks the trumpeter's natural emotional depth, though it's not unpleasant to listen to, and her treatment ofMiles Davis' "All Blues" with Baker's quartet is one of the album's high points. Baker's playing at this point had matured into a breathier tone and was more abstract than his earlier work; he retained his understated emotional lyricism to the end. SKU: 1012239

Ophelia
Personnel includes: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer, Hammond organ); Karl Berger, Gavin Bryars (conductor); Karen Perris (vocals, acoustic guitar); N'Dea Davenport, Yungchen Lhamo (vocals); Lokua Kanza (acoustic guitar); Graham Maby (electric guitar, bass); Daniel Lanois, Don Perris (electric guitar); Krystof Witek, Hector Falcon (violin); Wendy Gillespie (treble viol); Conroy Kuo, Ralph Farris (viola); Julia Hodgson, Richard Campbell (tenor viol); Susanna Pell (bass viol); Michelle Kinney, Garo Yellin (cello); William Hunt (great bass); Chris Botti (trumpet); Tom Varner (French Horn); George Laks (piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hammond organ); Jay Brunga (acoustic bass); Peter Yanowitz (drums). Engineers: Todd Vos, John Holbrook, Rupert Coulso. Recorded at Talking Dwarf Studios, Little Valley, New York; Air Studios, London, England. After her departure from 10,000 Maniacs, Merchant declared her artistic independence with the enormously popular TIGERLILY, an album not entirely dissimilar in style to her former group. Her highly anticipated followupmines a somewhat more introspective vein, as Merchant pursues her muse at length (many cuts hover around the five minute mark). The bulk of the tunes here are ballads adorned by piano, organ and strings, often achieving an almost ecclesiastical tone, as on the title cut, an exploration of a mythical woman who appears in many guises throughout history. Even relatively upbeat tunes like "Kind & Generous" and "Break Your Heart" retain the delicacy, sweetness and luxurious feel that have become Merchant's trademarks. The aforementioned spiritual element resurfaces in the bible-conscious lyrics of "Thick As Thieves" and the almost Carter Family-ish country spiritual "When They Ring The Golden Bells," a Merchant original that sounds like it could have been written 100 years ago. Presumably, that's just the kind of timelessness Merchant is aiming for on OPHELIA. SKU: 1000772

Rubber Riff
Soft Machine: Karl Jenkins, John Etheridge, Roy Babbington, John Marshall, Carol Barrat. RUBBER RIFF was not originally created for regular commercial release. Soft Machine mainstays Karl Jenkins and John Marshall produced this set as a so-called "needle drop" record, intending the short instrumentals tobe used for commercial purposes, such as ads, films, television, etc. They were conceived of as functioning as a bed or background for these various uses. Hence, there's an absence of pronounced foreground melody and movement in most of these pieces. Tellingly, Jenkins later went on into commercial music work not unlike this (a field into which founding member Mike Ratledge also went, meeting with substantial success). While RUBBER RIFF is decidedly not the place to start in exploring this important band, it is, nonetheless, a fascinating document that shows how sometimes art and commerce can intersect. Another World
Personnel: Brian May (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Jeff Beck, Jaimie Moses (guitar); Spike Edney (keyboards); Neil Murray, Ken Taylor (bass); Cozy Powell, Steve Ferrone (drums, percussion); Taylor Hawkins (drums); Cathy Porter, Shelley Preston, Nikki Love, Becci Glover (background vocals); Ian Hunter. Includes liner notes by Brian May. Though larger-than-life vocalist Freddie Mercury was obviously the heart of Queen, guitarist/songwriter/occasional singer Brian May was unquestionably the heart. It was his multi-tracked guitar arrangements and often his sophisticated, understatedcompositions that gave the band their signature sound. It's surprising then, that by 1998, he was only on his second solo album (and after a six year gap at that). May demonstrates his versatility by producing, arranging and playing most of the instruments on ANOTHER WORLD, assisted by people like Jeff Beck (who contributes guitar fireworks to "The Guv'nor") and late great drummer Cozy Powell. The tunes on ANOTHER WORLD are a far cry from the ostentatiously eclectic pop-rock that marked the last days of Queen. On most of the cuts, including "China Belle" and "Business," May pulls out the stops and engages in the kind of four-on-the-floor rock & roll that was always one of early Queen's greatest strengths. May's restrained, tasteful vocal style and unmistakeable guitar sound mark these songs as definitively as a set of fingerprints. SKU: 4127382

Release
Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Chris Lowe (keyboards, programming). Additional personnel includes: Johnny Marr (guitar); Chris Zippel (keyboards); Steve Walters (bass); Jodie Linscott (percussion). Recorded at Studio PSB and Sony Music Studios, London, England. RELEASE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Recording Package. Those whose minds are fixed on yesterday (read: the '80s) may forever associate the slyly intellectual pop duo Pet Shop Boys with now-cliche electronic dance flavors.Any expectation of nostalgia for such an approach on RELEASE is bound to be met with more than a little surprise. While there are sophisticated, percolating dance beats to be found in "The Samurai in Autumn" and some mildly danceable rhythm loops are heard elsewhere, this is an extremely organic album that occasionally verges on (dare it be said?) rock, or at least pop-rock. The cinematic, piano-driven torch song-in-denial "I Get Along" could have been penned by a more enlightened Elton John. The throaty vocals and lush, orchestral pop accompaniment of "Birthday Boy" bear echoes of Spiritualized's "pop" opus LET IT COME DOWN. Thus, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe manage to retain the tone of their initial vision without falling prey to the creeping morass of '80s retro fever, and good for them. SKU: 1070630

Nightfall Of Diamonds (Live At Meadowlands New Jersey 16 Oct 1989)
Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Brent Mydland (vocals, keyboards); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass);Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart (drums). Recorded at Meadowlands Sports Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey on October 16, 1989. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. By the time of this 1989 performance, the Grateful Dead were heading towards the last phase of their career. In a cruel, Spinal Tap-like twist of fate, keyboardist Brent Mydland would soon meet the same untimely fate as his predecessors Ron "Pigpen" McKernan and Keith Godchaux. Band visionary Jerry Garcia would follow him a few years after, effectively ending the band's long career. But on this night in New Jersey, they still had some of the old fire left. While newer songs such as "Built to Last" and "Picasso Moon" were not up to the standards of the band's previous work, they're outnumbered here by numerous classics, including the seldom-heard gem "Attics of My Life" from 1970's AMERICAN BEAUTY, and the band's legendary free-form tour de force "Dark Star." Even at this late date in their career, Garcia and bassist supremo Phil Lesh could still spin gorgeous sonic webs around each other that were truly transcendent in nature. NIGHTFALL OF DIAMONDS stands to prove that even towards the end of their lifespan, the Grateful Dead were a band full of surprises. SKU: 6579504

Mix Tape Vol.2 (Mixed By Funkmaster Flex)
Producers include: Funkmaster Flex, Ivory, Buckshot Da B.D.I. Emcee. Recorded at D&D Studios and The Hit Factory, New York, New York. New York City's top hip-hop DJ delivers the second installment of his mix-tape series. Not the first DJ to commercialize the underground mix tape on CD (fellow New Yorker Red Alert preceded him onto disc), but definitely one of the most influential, Funkmaster Flex showcases his turntable skills by mixing classic jams with freestyle rhymes from hip-hop's hottest MCs. From old school to new school, Flex spins cuts on the turntables as if he were rockin' a party rather than putting together a compilation album. With R&B hits, exclusive blends and guest vocals by almost every major rapper East of the Mississippi, THE MIX TAPE VOLUME 2 packs it all. Buckshot's remake of Rakim's"I Ain't No Joke" and microphone appearances by MCs Notorious B.I.G. & Da Lox give this album the ultimate hard-core appeal. SKU: 1054261

Ralph Stanley [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Ralph Stanley (vocals); Norman Blake (guitar, mandocello); Stuart Duncan (banjo, violin); Mike Compton (mandolin); Dennis Crouch (bass); Evelyn & Suzanne Cox (background vocals). Producers: T Bone Burnett, Bob Neuwirth, Larry Ehrlich. Recorded at Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee. RALPH STANLEY was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Bluegrass Album. Classic country music fans have long known about Ralph Stanley from his work with late brother Carter, as well as his legendary solo career. With the unexpected popularity of the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack and subsequent revival of interest in old-time bluegrass and country music, Stanley became better known to the general public. The release of RALPH STANLEY extends this thread as Stanley reunites with executive producer T-Bone Burnett (who oversaw the soundtrack) and fellow knob-twirlers Bob Neuwirth and Larry Ehrlich. Aided by a back-up band that includes legendary fretmaster Norman Blake, this collection of mostly traditional fare finds the septuagenarian applying his rich vocals to the surprisingly cheery murder ballad "Henry Lee" and his own high lonesome tune "Great High Ballad." Stanley displays his strong gospel influence on stunning a cappella readings of "Twelve Gates ToThe City" and "I'll Remember You Love In My Prayers" plus a version of Hank Williams's "Calling You," featuring the rich harmonies of Evelyn and Suzanne Cox. Tying up this link to America's musical past is "The Death Of John Henry," a twangy retelling of the John Henry folk story featuring intricate interplay between Blake, mandolinist Mike Compton and fiddle player Stuart Duncan. Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello). Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin. A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people to a star-in-waiting. 'Darling Nikki' accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track andthe crushing 'When Doves Cry' can pardon him that. SKU: 1000489

American Life [ECD] [PA]
This isan Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Madonna (vocals); Mirawais Ahmadzai (guitar, programming, background vocals); Stuart Price (piano); Nicky Brown Choir, London Community Gospel Choir. Re-teaming with French electro-pop producer Mirwais, (who also lent his talents to 2000's MUSIC), Madonna uses her perspective as a globally famous ex-pat living in England to comment on the USA's spiritual state throughout AMERICAN LIFE. Prominently featuring plenty of acoustic guitar among the synth-soaked swooshes and Euro-disco beats, the Material Girl ends up going for a more stripped-down sound. This technique works particularly well on the opening title cut, which finds Ms. Ciccone rapping about bodyguards, soy lattes, gardeners and other upper-class perks that don't seem to make the spiritual side of life any better. "Hollywood" does an even better job addressing the downside of fame while pumping in a few more hooks. Faith in family fuels the lush "Nothing Fails," with its unexpected gospel-chorus outro, while amore inspires the light and tight "Love Profusion," and insecurity plagues the solo-acoustic "X-Static Process." Of course all these songs of self-discovery and spirituality didn't stop Madonna from including "Die Another Day," the Euro-techno title song from the James Bond film of the same name. SKU: 1082141

Blind Melon
Blind Melon: Shannon Hoon (vocals); Thomas Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn (guitar); Brad Smith (bass); Glen Graham (drums). Additional personnel:Sabbi Kahn (sarangi). Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington in February 1992. Given the preponderance of synthesizers and samples on contemporary radio outlets, fans of guitar bands must be feeling a little let down, when along comes a Blind Melon. BLIND MELON puts a contemporary slant on metal, blues and assorted psychedelia without sounding lost in the past. Nevertheless, their deep roots in classic FM sounds help define their appeal, not unlike that of a Pearl Jam. Vocalist Hoon howls at the moon in the best tradition of Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne and Axl Rose, while the Glen Graham-Brad Smith rhythm team moves convincingly from rock thrash ("Paper Scratcher") to funk ("Seed To A Tree") and even some country and eastern sounds ("Holyman," "Sleepyhouse"). But the heart and soul of BLIND MELON are the loose spacey exchanges between guitarists Christopher Thorn and Roger Stevens, who sound at times like the Grateful Dead paraphrasing Led Zeppelin ("Soak The Sun," "No Rain"). Blind Melon was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best New Artist." SKU: 1084717

Flowers Of Evil
Mountain: Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Felix Pappalardi (vocals, bass); Steve Knight (keyboards); Corky Laing (drums). Mountain's second release of 1971 (and fourth releasein only a two year span), FLOWERS OF EVIL, would turn out to be the band's final studio release before starting a cycle of splitting up and reuniting. Comprising equal amounts of all new studio material and live recordings, FLOWERS OF EVIL contains several Mountain gems. Highlights of the studio side remain the album opening title track, as well as the Cream-like (and appropriately titled) blues rocker, "Crossroader." Mountain were always known for their larger than life concerts, and the live tracks capture the band in all its electrified boogie glory--a 25-minute medley centered around a cover of "Roll Over Beethoven," which weaves in and out of other jams, as well as a run through of their best known song, "Mississippi Queen." 1's [SACD]

(percussion); Clarence, Mase, Shanrae Price, Partrique McMillan, Geno Morris, David Cole, Mary Ann Tatum, Kevon Edmonds, Nathan Walton, Mark Kibble, Melvin Edmonds, Daryl Hawes, J. Valentine, Vearline Board, Joy Enriquez, Dion Allen, Peach, Lynn Davis, Syretha Smith, Sharlotte Gibson, Shanice Wilson, Krystal Wilson, Tavia Ivey, Kenya Ivey, Lisa Ivey, Nathan Ivey (background vocals). The Darryl Douglas Workshop Company: Kelly Price, Cheree Price, Melonie Daniels, Peggy Harley, Liz Stewart, Spencer Washington, Henry Casper (background vocals). Producers include: Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieef, Babyface, Jermaine Dupri, Narada Michael Walden. Engineers include: Dana Jon Chapelle, Jay Healy, Phil Tan. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig. Blessed with a voice that covers more of a range than anyone this side of Minnie Riperton, and a knack for ingratiating, breezy pop/R&B, Mariah Carey became one of the premier pop divas of the '90s. For those who were hibernatingduring that decade, #1's lays it all out in an easily digestible format, presenting Carey's biggest and best under one roof. From the inspirational message of the poignant ballad "Hero" to the roots nod of "I'll Be There" (with impressive assistance from Trey Lorenz), it's clear that Carey has charisma to match her chops. On the infectious, almost giddy "Dream Lover" she voices her romantic desires so sweetly that the listener is moved by the urge to jump into the track on a white horse and whisk her off to some mythological paradise. Now that's the mark of a convincing singer. SKU: 1073788

Chyna Doll

Producers include: Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, Swizz Beatz, Charly "Shuga Bear" Charles, Kane West. Engineers include: Jason Goldstein, Tom Soares, T Mix. The sophomore album from hip-hop diva Foxy Brown comes almost two years after she took rap music by storm. Her hardcore rhyme flow and fashionable lyrical content are still present, but where Foxy went the commercial route with her debut, she returns to the streets on CHYNA DOLL.Constantly a target for the media, Foxy explains the hardships that go along with that circumstance on "My Life." She flips the coin, though, on "B.W.A.," collaborating with Gangsta Boo and Mia X for a women's-power anthem. Street-inspired songs abound on CHYNA DOLL, and Brown is visited by her partner-in-rhyme, Jay-Z, as well as other notable hardcore MCs such as DMX. SKU: 4127250

Chill Out
Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar, steel guitar); Danny Caron, Rich Kirch, Billy Johnson, Bruce Kaphan (guitar); John Sanders (piano); Chester Thompson (keyboards); Deacon Jones (organ); Ruth Davies, Benny Rietveld, Max Cridlin, Jim Guyett (bass); Scott Mathews, Gaylord Birch, Bowen Brown (drums); Raul Rekow (congas); Karl Perazzo (timbales). Producers: Carlos Santana, Roy Rogers, John Lee Hooker. Engineers: Arne Frager, Samuel Lehmer, Bruce Kaphan. Recorded at Russian Hill Recording, San Francisco, California; The Plant, Sausalito, California; Dragon Studio, Redwood City, California. CHILL OUT won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. One of a series of superb Hooker albums recorded in the '90s, CHILL OUT clearly shows that John Lee remains at the top of his game. The opening (and title) track features guitar god and long time Hooker fan Carlos Santana (withhis band). Although quite slick sounding, Santana's Latin funk grooves and typically blistering solo fit suprisingly well with John Lee's gutbucket vocals--a testament to the aging blues man's incredible versatility. Roy Rogers (the blues guy, not the cowboy fast food mogul) reveals himself as an adept and sensitive producer and also adds some very tasty slide guitar on four tunes. CHILL OUT includes several Hooker solo guitar and vocal pieces, some of which are among the best of his career. "Too Young," in particular, is chilling in it's sparseness and intensity. Hooker's voice is in great shape and, for a man known for his "talking" style, he can sing incredibly sweetly and melodically when he wants to. On "Kiddio," which features some truly funky piano from the great Charles Brown, John Lee positively croons. Whether with a full band or all alone, John Lee Hooker's talent burns brightly throughout CHILL OUT. SKU: 1001459

Hardgroove
The RH Factor: Roy Hargrove (arranger, trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, bass, percussion); Keith Anderson (alto & tenor saxophones); Jacques Schwarz-Bart (tenor saxophone); James Poyser (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Bernard Wright (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, ARP synthesizer); Bobby Sparks (Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, ARP synthesizer); Spanky, Cornell Dupree (guitar); Pino Palladino, Reggie Washington (bass); Willie Jones III, Jason Thomas (drums). Additional personnel: D'Angelo (vocals, Wurlitzer piano); Renee Neufville, Stephanie McKay, Shelby Johnson, Erykah Badu (vocals); Common, Q-Tip (rap vocals); Steve Coleman (alto saxophone); Karl Denson (flute); Meshell Ndegeocello (bass); Kwaku Obeng (percussion). Producers: Roy Hargrove, Jason Olaine, Russell Elevado. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York between January & September 2002. Having previously explored such varying genres as classic bebop on PARKER'S MOOD, and Latin swing in HABANA, Roy Hargrove turns his attention to urban R&B with this consistently entertaining set. HARD GROOVE is one of the more adventurous albums in the trumpeter's Verve catalogue, featuring hip-hop artists such as Q-Tip and sophisticated R&B singers Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. As you'd expect from such company, the music is smooth as Courvoisier, especially on such grooving soul cuts as "Forget Regret," with Stephanie Mackay's tough-but-fragile vocals reminiscent of Randy Crawford's workwith the Crusaders. And of course Hargrove can't resist a cursory nod to Miles Davis on the all-too-brief "Interlude," with its urban ambience. Mostly, though, HARD GROOVE is that rare delight--high-quality jazz-funk that avoids straying into the realms of lite jazz. Hargrove's tasteful, lyrically swinging trumpet is a constant pleasure, while the impeccably credentialed musicianship negotiates its way through the jazz- and R&B-inflected arrangements with practiced ease.
