Rendezvous
Full performer name: Jacky Terrasson/Cassandra Wilson. Personnel includes: Jacky Terrasson (acoustic & electric pianos); Cassandra Wilson (vocals); Lonnie Plaxico, Kenny Davis (bass); Mino Cinelu (percussion). Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York between January 4 and April 4, 1997. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Tired of endless jazz records full of standards that all sound the same? Well, Jacky Terrasson and Cassandra Wilson have a surprise for you. RENDEZVOUS could very well be one of the most unique albums to come along in quite a while. From the first tones of "Old Devil Moon" the listener is immediately drawn into a somber world of mood indigo shadings and sensual caresses. Wilson and Terrasson create a rich pastel of relaxing grooves and floating, dark phrasings which gives each tune a special character. This will certainly be the "bluest" version of "Tennessee Waltz" most listeners have ever heard and is well worth the price of admission. Standards like "It Might As Well Be Spring," " My Ship," "I Remember You" and "Tea For Two" become freshand new in the hands of Wilson. Her deep, dark tones lend a distinctive shape to each lyric. Terrasson turns in a few impressive instrumental tracks, "Chan's Song", "Chicago 1987", and an almost unrecognizable "Autumn Leaves." Sparse instrumentation (just a trio with a percussionist instead of drums) and consistently tasteful musical conservations make RENDEZVOUS a rare treat. SKU: 5061636

Poet Vol.1, The [Remastered]
Personnel: Bobby Womack (vocals, guitar); David T. Walker (guitar); Dorothy Ashby (harp); Patrick Moten, Dale Ramsey (keyboards); David Shields, Nathan East (bass); James Gadson (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Eddie Bongo Brown (percussion); Tondalei, Sally Womack, Vincent Womack, Regina Womack (handclaps); Johnny Parham, Jon Rami, Richard Griffin, Cecil Womack, Fernando Harkless, Curtis Womack, Friendly Womack, The Waters (background vocals). Engineers: Barney Perkins, Avi Kipper, Robert Battaglia. Recorded at Hit City West and Kendun Studios, Burbank, California. Mr. Womack has been around forever, and even with his personal ups and downs (and he has had a few) he manages to survive. It's hard to think that this was the man who first recorded 'It's All Over Now' with the Valentinos in the early 60s, and word was spread by the Rolling Stones, who had a massive hit with it. He worked as a solo artist in the 70s and also with Linda Womack, as Womack And Womack. During the early 80s he hit a particularly fine seam of gold, and this was his most successfulalbum. Falling somewhere between funk and Marvin Gaye sweet soul THE POET is a highly polished album. SKU: 1017258

Blackout
Personnel includes: Method Man, Redman, Ghostface, Street, LL Cool J, Mally G, Missy Elliott (vocals). Producers include: Erick Sermon, RZA, Redman, Gov Mattic, DJ Scratch. Engineers include: Dave Greenberg, Brian Springer, Tommy Uzzo. One of the mostinteresting things about this collaboration between two of hip-hop's heaviest hitters is how little it relies on traditional hip-hop rhythms. Rather, most of the songs on BLACKOUT employ rhythms based on funk and dancehall reggae, giving the album a freshness that sets it apart from the hip-hop pack. Method Man and Redman have nothing if not a talent for drama, going so far as to back up their statements of gangsta superiority and sexual prowess with the sound of exploding bombs on "Fire in Da Hole." The pair eschews the use of elaborate arrangements and overt samples so as to focus the tracks on their own forceful, dynamic delivery. Most importantly, Method Man and Redman don't appear to be in a contest to see who can rap the fastest. Their pace is deliberate enough to ensure that their message is received, and their style is expansive enough to include vocal flourishes that play off the aforementioned dancehall rhythmic touches. Very Best Of Randy Travis, The
Personnel: Randy Travis (vocals); Larry Byrom (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Mark Casstevens (acoustic guitar); Steve Gibson (electric guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Mark O'Connor (fiddle); Bobby Wood (keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass instrument); Larry Londin (drums). Producers: Kyle Lehning; Keith Stegall; Richard Perry Compilation Producer: James Austin. Recording information: 1985 - 2002. Randy Travis emerged in the 1980s at the forefront of country's New Traditionalist movement, with a sound that recalled classic country balladeers George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Lefty Frizzell. His pure, honest approach to heart-wrenching saloon songs resonated with country audiences in a major way, making him a star. This 20-song collection is a single-disc distillation of Travis's long, fruitful career, and is the perfect place to start exploring his work. While there aresome up-tempo honky-tonk numbers here, it's the slow-burn ballad that is Travis's stock in trade, and there's no shortage of those. From the tormented would-be philanderer of "On the Other Hand" (his first big hit) to the jilted lover of the heartbroken lament "It's Just a Matter of Time," Travis inhabits every song completely, with a voice deeper than anything this side of Tennessee Ernie Ford and full of unadorned emotion. The fact that Travis's career weathered the changes in the country scene long enough to merit an anthology such as this is a mark of both his enduring appeal and his substantive, unpretentious artistry. The much-anticipated soundtrack to Russell Simmons' THE SHOW unites artists from all over the hip-hop nation to contribute music and thoughts on their first love: hip-hop. The film is thefirst feature documentary devoted to the life and truths of the hip-hop culture, and its soundtrack attempts to define what the music is all about. With a dose of rap, R&B and reggae, THE SHOW is musically diverse, and the idea that hip-hop is interwoven in the everyday life of its followers is inherent to nearly every song. THE SHOW marks the return of some rap MIAs. Onyx foreshadow their coming in the nine-five with "Live!!!." Suga, formerly known as Sweet Tee, donates "What's Up Star?," a party groove sure to be the new anthem for female macks. The only other female artist featured on the collection is the Queen of hip-hop soul, Mary J. Blige. On "Everyday It Rains," Blige sports her usual street-influenced vocals over a loop of the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing." THE SHOW is at its best on the Erick Sermon-produced "How High," which combines the Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man with Redman. Appearances from LL Cool J and Slick Rick fill the old school requirement, while tracks like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "Everyday Thang" and South Central Cartel's "Sowhatusayin" add the gangstas to the mix. Surprisingly, there's only one live track, and it comes from Brooklyn's finest, The Notorious B.I.G., who rocks the crowd with "Me And My Bitch." The song is off his platinum debut, and, although it is only a brief moment of a 27-track compilation, Biggie still manages to nearly steal THE SHOW. SKU: 7914812

Traveller's Prayer
Personnel: John Renbourn (acoustic guitar); Mairead Ni Dhomhnaill (vocals); Maire Breatnach (fiddle); Connor Byrne (flute); Joe McKenna (whistle, Uilleann pipes); Dick Lee (clarinet, recorder); Bill Kemp, Nick Turner (percussion). The Voice Squad: Gerry Cullen, Phil Callery, Fran McPhail (vocals). Engineers: Paul Ashe-Browne, Trevor Hutchinson, Nick Turner. Recorded at The Works, Irishtown, Dublin, Ireland; Marguerite Studios, Glasnevin, Dublin, Ireland; Watercolour Music, Ardgour, Locaber, Scotland. Includes liner notes by John Renbourn. Celtic music was quite popular in the late '90s. Blame that faux-Irish RIVERDANCE business, if you must. The fact is that a lot of folk artists made obligatory Irish albums, most of which were pretty forgettable. John Renbourn's A TRAVELLER'S PRAYER is not one of those. It's not the guitarist's most inspired work; of his solo releases, THE LADY AND THE UNICORN retains that honor. But Renbourn's personal style is close enough to traditional Irish music that A TRAVELLER'S PRAYER doesn't sound like too much of a stretch. Renbourn's preferred field is Renaissance and medieval music, meaning that his music is less exclusively British than that of folk artists working in more recent vintages. He therefore has fewer stylistic tropes to unlearn andre-learn. Though some of the Celtic-ized arrangements are a bit soppy, A TRAVELLER'S PRAYER is mostly very pleasant. SKU: 1017911

Strange But True
Jad Fair: David Fair. Yo La Tengo: Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, James McNew. Engineers inlclude: Fred Brockman. Recorded on June 21, 1994 and August 30, 1996. The pairing of Half Japanese's Jad Fair with Hoboken's finest rock trio is a match made in indie rock heaven. With his brother David (the lyric-writing half of Half Japanese), Jad hasbeen mining the outer borders of post-punk for the better part of twenty years, home-recording everything from free-jazz-inspired noise to lo-fi rock. Informed absurdists like the Fairs have always been an inspiration for Yo La Tengo. So over the course of two sessions in the past four years, inspiration became collaboration. Armed with David's lyrics--cribbed from articles of the more surrealist supermarket tabloids--and with Yo La's gift for improvisation, the two parties begat STRANGE BUT TRUE. As may be expected with spur-of-the-moment projects, the quality ranges from the inspired to the tossed-off. Ira Kaplan's guitar is ever present, creating a thorny distraction in case the flood of words subsides. The rockers allow the rhythm section to put the throttle down while Jad rants to keep up. On quieter tracks, the rhythm section plinks and planks, and Jad becomes a campfire storyteller. Either way, STRANGE BUT TRUE is full of sublime Daniel Johnston-type moments, and if those are welcome in your heart, then this album should be too. SKU: 1007442

Greatest Hits
Squeeze includes: Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook, Jools Holland, Paul Carrack. Producers include: Squeeze, John Wood, Roger Bechirian, Elvis Costello, Phil McDonald. Compilation producers: Mike Ragogna, Beth Stempel. This set charts Squeeze's course from their late '70s beginnings through the sadly overlooked FRANK in 1989. While all these selections weren't bona fide hits, they were all released as singles and certainly should havebeen chart-toppers. Leaders Difford and Tilbrook know how to craft true pop gems (and the Beatle comparisons they received are more than warranted), with hooks that manage to be innovative in sometimes subtle ways--"Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" being a case in point. That these twenty songs possess the familiarity of warmly remembered hits even if they're a new experience for the listener says much about the high level of writing, arranging and playing skills that characterize this blue chip ensemble. Out Of The Afternoon
Roy Haynes Quartet: Roy Haynes (drums); Roland Kirk (tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch, flute); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Henry Grimes (acoustic bass). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 16 & 23, 1962. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). Roy Haynes' drumming is unmistakable. His snappy snare drum sound and overall rhythmic sensibility cast him in a different light to technicians such as Buddy Rich or even the melodic Joe Morello. While Haynes' musicianship has sent shock waves through the entire field of percussion, he has never achieved recognition as a great bandleader. OUT OF THE AFTERNOON, however, proves Haynes' distinction in this regard. This 1962 album displays Haynes' ability to grow and adapt to changes in jazz as a performer and as a leader, an ability that many of his contemporaries lacked. A thoroughly post-bop album, OUT OF THE AFTERNOON showcases the drummer's soloing abilities best on "Raoul," a track that traverses some inscrutable jazz territory, at once playful and controlled, raw and contemplative. It's thisapproach that makes OUT OF THE AFTERNOON prominent among the vast canon of post-bop albums. SKU: 6534975

Money And Cigarettes [Remastered]
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, electric & slide guitar); Ry Cooder (electric & slide guitar); Albert Lee (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn(bass); Roger Hawkins (drums); John Sambataro, Chuck Kirkpatrick (background vocals). Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. Digitally remastered by Keith Blake. After releasing ANOTHER TICKET and scoring a top 10 hit with "I Can't Stand It," Clapton switched labels and released MONEY AND CIGARETTES. This time out, Clapton's back-up band included Ry Cooder, Brit country-picker Albert Lee and Duck Dunn of Booker T. & The MGs. Continuing the trend of his last album, Clapton wrote most of the songs with the exception of a few covers. Blues icons Sleepy John Estes ("Everybody Oughta Make A Change") and R.G. Ford ("Crosscut Saw") get their due, as does early rock'n'roll pioneer Johnny Otis ("Crazy Country Hop"), whose "Willie & The Hand Jive" Clapton had previously covered. With two technically skilled guitarists like Cooder and Lee to keep him on his toes, Clapton flexes his fretwork considerably more than he had during his mellower '70s singer-songwriter phase. Some of E.C's more nimble-fingered exchanges come on "The Shape You're In" along with "Ain't Going Down," a number that's a barely concealed reworking of "All Along The Watchtower." SKU: 1053833

Songs From The West Coast
Personnel includes: Elton John (vocals, piano); Rufus Wainwright (vocals); Bruce Gaitsch, David Channing (acoustic guitar); Davey Johnstone (guitar, background vocals); Rusty Anderson (guitar); Stevie Wonder (harmonica, Clavinet); Billy Preston, Patrick Leonard (Hammond B-3 organ); Paul Bushnell (bass, background vocals); Matt Chamberlain, Nigel Olsson (drums, background vocals); Jay Bellerose (percussion); Tata Vega, Kudisan Kai (background vocals). Engineers include: Joe Chiccarelli, Brian Scheuble, David Channing. SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "I Want Love" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Original Sin" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST is the album for all those who idolize HONKY CHATEAU and CAPTAIN FANTASTIC but feared that Elton John had become Disneyfied beyond repair in the '90s. Whether the inspiration was aesthetic hunger or mid-life crisis, Elton decided to teamup with lyricist Bernie Taupin--the man who helped pen all those '70s classics--to produce a more direct, stripped-down album than he's seemed capable of since his glory days. There's no overblown orchestration here, just simple arrangements based quite rightly around Elton's piano and voice. Playing to his strengths, the piano man concentrates largely on ballads, from the somewhat Beatlesque "I Want Love" to the stately, elegiac "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore." Still, Elton didn't become the master pop craftsman that he is by constructing monochromatic records; "The Wasteland" is a churning bluesy number, and "Dark Diamond" employs a modified reggae rhythm. After years of wandering around in a star-studded artistic netherworld, Elton serves notice with SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST that he's putting them together and belting them out again like he did in his heyday. Spirit Of Radio, The
Initial pressings of SPIRIT OF RADIO included a bonus DVD. Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, Mini-Moog synthesizer, Oberheim synthesizer, bass); Alex Lifeson (acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, synthesizer); Neil Peart (glockenspiel, drums, timbales, timpani, triangle, percussion, electronic percussion, gong, cowbell, chimes); John Rutsey (drums). Additional personnel: Aimee Mann (vocals); Andy Richards (keyboards, programming); Jim Burgess (programming). Producers: Rush, Terry Brown, Peter Henderson, Peter Collins. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Recorded between 1974 & 1987. Canadian power trio Rush defined a new genre by combining hard rock's relentless drive and screeching vocals with progressive rock's jaw-dropping chops and quasi-mystical/science fiction lyrical sensibility. In the process, the group also spawned two musical revolutionaries in Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, both of whose influence is still felt by anyone who even thinks about playing in a hard rock rhythm section. If that wasn't enough, Rush even managed to successfully change with the times, scoring several gigantic hits in the '80s by folding elements of new wave, reggae, and electronics into an already diverse sound. THE SPIRIT OF RADIO collects many of the best-known tracks from what most fans would consider the band's classic era. Beginning with the heartland rock of "Working Man" and proceeding through MOVING PICTURES's futuristic "Red Barchetta" and GRACE UNDER PRESSURE's Cold War-inspired "Distant Early Warning," thecollection shows the members of Rush constantly seeking out new sounds and ideas, all the while maintaining their unparalleled virtuosity and rock energy. Some may have preferred the inclusion of a track from 1975's CARESS OF STEEL ("Bastille Day" being the obvious choice) instead of the two songs from HOLD YOUR FIRE, but this is otherwise a perfectly chosen group of songs providing a fascinating overview. Strange Beautiful Music
Personnel includes: Joe Satriani (acoustic & electric guitar, banjo, keyboards, bass); Robert Fripp (electric guitar); Pia Vai (harp); Eric Caudieux (keyboards); Matt Bissonette (bass); Jeff Campitelli, Greg Bissonette (drums); John Cunibert (percussion). Recorded at The Plant, Sausalito, California. "Starry Night" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. For his first album since dabbling with electronica on 2000's ENGINES OF CREATION, Joe Satriani returns to the bread-and-butter of straight-forward instrumental virtuosity with a few exotic nuances sprinkled throughout like musical parmesan cheese. Heavy synths and delays give "Oriental Melody" a sinister glint while fat guitar tones mix with Middle Eastern-flavored chord progressions on the intriguing "Belly Dancer." Fans put off by Satch's recent experimentation will have further reason to rejoice over the return of this prodigal son once they hear the thundering riffage of "Mind Storm," hook-filled "New Last Jam" and sassy snap of "Hill Groove." Elsewhere, the Long Island native distinguishes himself from the calculated playing associated with practitioners of this genre that he spawned on two cuts--the acoustic-guitar laced "You Saved My Life" and equally moving "Starry Night." The one non-original is a gorgeous cover of the Santo and Johnny '50s hit "Sleep Walk" featuring a cameo by Robert Fripp, a guitar god in his own right. STRANGE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC is a welcome return fromone of music's more maddeningly gifted participants. SKU: 1073385
