Knuckle Down [Digipak]
Personnel: Ani DiFranco (vocals, guitar); Niki Haris, Noe Venable (vocals); Andrew Bird (whistling, violin, glockenspiel); Tony Scherr (electric guitar); Julie Wolfe (melodica); Patrick Warren (piano, chamberlin, sampler); Todd Sickafoose (Wurlitzer piano, bass guitar); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion). Recording information: The Sound Factory, Los Angeles, CA. For her first few albums of the 21st century, Buffalo, NY native Ani DiFranco gave in to her most inventive, explorative side. She delved into jazz on one record (EVOLVE), offered up a double-disc concept album (REVELLING RECKONING), and isolated herself in a room with her guitar on yet another (EDUCATED GUESS). With 2005's KNUCKLE DOWN, the DIY icon's 14th solo studio record in 16 years for her own Righteous Babe label, DiFranco eschews much of that experimentation, opting fora return to the formula that, along with her heralded DIY ethos, initially brought her to prominence. KNUCKLE DOWN opens with comfortingly familiar, insistent acoustic-guitar strumming on the sweetly pensive title track, as DiFranco begins her story with the image of her "cowgirl alter-ego," before weaving through constantly shifting Dylan-esque imagery. DiFranco's voice contains unique folds and shadings, and is often underrated, but on tracks like the reflective "Studying Stones," when her now-customary falsetto lilt kicks in, the results are entrancing. It wouldn't be a DiFranco record without a piece of slam-poetry-style spoken word, and she obliges with the winding story "Parameters." KNUCKLE DOWN is yet another reminder of the prolific DiFranco continued relevance. SKU: 6584543

At Birdland Vols.1 & 2
Personnel: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Little Jimmy Scott (vocals); Brew Moore (tenor saxophone); Red Rodney, Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Al Haig, Bud Powell, Walter Bishop, Kenny Drew, Billy Taylor (piano); Tommy Potter, Curley Russell, Teddy Kotick (bass); Roy Haynes, Art Blakey (drums); Symphony Sid, Leonard Feather, Bob Garrity. Recorded live at Birdland, New York, New York between February 1950 and April 1951. Includes 50-page essay by Dr. Robert Bergman and afterword by Jay Bergman. A sumptuously packaged, well-annotated four-disc, 64-track boxset, CHARLIE PARKER AT BIRDLAND collects every note the alto saxophone legend played at New York's famed jazz club Birdland between February 1950 and April 1951. The material was primarily recorded for the famous jazz radio show "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid." Despite the assertion made in a clever 1998 Levi's commercial, Birdland was not named after Charlie "Bird" Parker. However, Parker played there whenever he was in town, often with his own band but primarily in the company of New York's finest bebop players. The liner notes read like a "Who's Who of Bebop"--former Parker sideman Miles Davis, who at the time was leading his own BIRTH OF THE COOL nonet, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Bud Powell, and many others make appearances. This is live bebop at its finest. SKU: 1066802

Green Light [Remastered]
Personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Johnny Lee Shell (vocals, guitar, organ, autoharp, percussion); Ian "Mac" McLagan (guitar, keyboards); Rick Vito (guitar); David Woodford (saxophone); William "Smitty" Smith (organ); Ray Ohara (bass); Ricky Fataar (drums, percussion, background vocals); Rob Fraboni (percussion); Jackson Browne, Vince Gill, Melanie Rosales, Richard Manuel, Steve Raitt (background vocals). Recorded at Shangri-la Studios, Malibu, California in 1981. Digitally remastered by Keith Blake. 1982's GREEN LIGHTS was Bonnie Raitt's first album of the '80s. On it, her sound took a more mainstream turn away from the blues and R&B normally associated with her music. Instead of interpreting material by MableJohn and Sippie Wallace, Raitt went with tunes by reggae artist Eddy Grant ("Baby Come Back") and Bob Dylan ("Let's Keep It Between Us." Raitt co-wrote the rubbery, reggae-tinged "Can't Get Enough" and the Stonesier "I Can't Help Myself," with Vince Gill helping out on harmony vocals. Additional guests include Rick Vito, Jackson Browne and jazz organist William "Smitty" Smith. Raitt's best cover choices by far are a pair of tunes from the NRBQ catalog. The hard-driving title track is barely beat out by the infectious "Me And The Boys," proving Raitt equally adept at rocking out or wielding a potent blues slide. SKU: 1071374

Songs For Lovers
Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Art Pepper, Bud Shank (alto saxophone); Phil Urso, Bill Perkins, Jack Montrose (tenor saxophone); Bob Gordon (baritone saxophone); Norman Raye, Conte Candoli (trumpet); Frank Rosolino (trombone); Russ Freeman,Bobby Timmons (piano); David Wheat (guitar); Ross Savukas, Carson Smith, Jimmy Bond, Leroy Vinnegar, Joe Mondragon (bass); Bob Neel, Peter Littman, Larance Marable, Larry Bunker, Shelly Manne (drums). Producer: Richard Bock. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded between July 1953 and December 1957. Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. All 12 tracks here span the years 1953-1957 and were recorded when Chet Baker was at the peak of his popularity. Most of the tracks were recorded by his quartet, which included pianist Russ Freeman. Baker always favored romantic jazz standard ballads of yearning and seduction. His trumpet playing is extremely natural and melodic and disarmingly yet deceptively simple. He plays in clear toned, lyrical elongated lines that ever so subtly twist the melodies. Included here are a beautiful moody version of Billy Strayhorn's classic "Lush Life" and three wonderful live tracks recorded in 1954 at the Tiffany Club in Los Angeles. A wistful "Embraceable You" and a melancholic "There's a Lull in My Life," featuring guitarist David Wheat, are two standouts. Baker's tenor vocals stick closely to the bare bones of the melody with just the subtlest variation, delivering the lyrics in long, straight-toned phrases barely above a whisper. These classic tracks are perfect for romantic late night listening. SKU: 1002769

Live At The Whiskey-a-go-go 1969
Humble Pie includes: Steve Marriott, Peter Frampton (vocals, guitar); Greg Ridley (bass); Jerry Shirley (drums). Compilation producers: Jerry Shirley, Barry Green. Recorded live at The Whiskey A-Go-Go, Los Angeles, California in December 1969. Includes liner notes by Mark Paytress. All tracks have been digitally remastered. As one of the premier British "boogie" bands of the late '60s/early '70s, it's widely agreed by classic rock enthusiasts that Humble Pie was best experiencedin its natural habitat, the concert stage. HP was already the subject of several live albums from this era (most notably the classic 1971 release PERFORMANCE: ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE) when 2002 saw the release of an archival live recording, LIVE AT THE WHISKEY A-GO-GO '69. This early phase of the band is usually regarded as the group's finest, as singer/guitarist Steve Marriott had the perfect foil in the form of Peter Frampton, just prior to Frampton launching his solo career. While Marriott's bluesy and soulful voice was usually the talk of Humble Pie, Frampton proves to be a woefully underrated guitarist throughout, as he reels off countless tasty riffs and leads, especially on the album's two longest tracks, a 12-and-a-half minute take of "Shakin' All Over" and a jamfest version of "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" nearly twice that length. Monster
R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Mike Mills (bass); Bill Berry (drums). Additional personnel: Bertis Downs (keyboards); Jefferson Holt, Sally Dworski, Ane, Lynda, Lou, Rain. Recorded at Ocean Way Recording, Los Angeles, California; Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, Florida; Crossover Soundstage, Atlanta, Georgia; Kingsway Studio, New Orleans, Louisiana. MONSTER was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. MONSTER has nothing in common with the elegant, mannered sounds R.E.M. has been producing since GREEN. While you can discern allusions to hard rock icons from Neil Young and Mott The Hoople through Television and Nirvana, MONSTER is neither a faddist grunge album nor a laundry list of influences--but certain subliminal references seem to spark R.E.M.'s muse, inspiring a dozen powerhouse songs. The classic R.E.M. sound is churned through a meat grinderand served up raw and bleeding on MONSTER. From the opening power chords of "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" through the desperate raga rock of "You," Peter Buck is the hero of MONSTER. Buck's pealing rhythm guitar and bassist Mike Mills' melodic counterpoint are mixed front and center, so that vocalist Michael Stipe has to shout to be heard...imagine a typical P.A. arena mix. Meanwhile, the enigmatic Stipe experiments with a variety of new vocal guises. He plays a haughty rock star on the prowl with a droll Bowie delivery on "Crush With Eyeliner," while unveiling a Gabriel falsetto on "I Don't Sleep, I Dream," Southern soul mannerisms on "Tongue," and Jaggerish menace on "I Took Your Name." But the best thing about MONSTER is that in their quest not to repeat themselves, to push the envelope on their performance style--to change their sound--R.E.M. has dipped back into their roots and emerged with a truly classic rock album. Absolutely Free
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa(guitar, vocals); Ray Collins (vocals); Bunk Gardner (saxophone); Don Preston (keyboards, vocals); Roy Estrada (bass, vocals); Jimmy Carl Black, Billy Mundi (drums, percussion, vocals). This package contains the complete libretto (clean American version), plus two additional tracks not included on the original release. Before becoming obsessed with sex, politics and the Synclavier, Frank Zappa was a performer of great whimsy, who here, on his second album, was singing about such topics as fruits and vegetables while also displaying a developing critical attitude toward American social mores. Dense with musical references from "Louie Louie" to Holst's "The Planets," ABSOLUTELY FREE is a testament to the young Zappa's awesome musical breadth. These Mothers of Invention lack the precision of Zappa's later combos, but give a firm R&B grounding to his experimentation. ABSOLUTELY FREE includes the classic "Brown Shoes Don't Make It," a biting parody of suburban American values, along with forgotten masterpieces like "Call Any Vegetable," a tune pointing out the ease with which we can become in tune with our little green buddies. Everything's OK
Personnel include: Al Green (vocals); Buddy Manuel (guitar); New Memphis Strings (strings); Bobby Rush (harmonica); Lester Snell (piano); Robert Clayborne (organ); Leroy Hodges (bass instrument); Steve Potts (drums, percussion); Sandra Rhodes, Donna Rhodes, Charlie Chalmers (background vocals). Recording information: Willie Mitchell'sRoyal Studios, Memphis, TN (2004). When R&B kingpin Al Green abandoned the secular world for gospel music, it seemed he'd left his old world behind forever. Indeed,Green became Reverend of his own church and recorded nothing but spiritual material for decades. However, the 21st century saw a turnaround in his career, and EVERYTHING'S OK marked the second installment in Green's return to form, creating a pair of records where Green was reunited with Willie Mitchell, producer of his classic 1970s albums, on strictly secular material. Like its predecessor, EVERYTHING'S OK is virtually indistinguishable from the essential records Green made for the Hi label some 30 years prior. Indeed, some of the same session musicians even returned to the fold. The punchy horns, syncopated rhythms, lush organ, cooing harmony vocals, and terse guitar lines are all present and accounted for. Most impressive, of course, is the fact that Green himself is still capable of going from a feline purr to a feral growl at the drop of a hat, his one-of-a-kind voice sounding as strong as ever, and ultimately delivering on the promise of the album's title. Spice
Spice Girls: Victoria, Emma, Melanie C., Geri, Melanie B. Additional personnel includes: Absolute (various instruments); Greg Lester (guitar); Jackie Drew (violin); Tony Ward (cello); Judd Lander (harmonica); Matt Rowe, Richard Stannard (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Dave Way, Pete Davis, Paul Waller, Statik (programming); Mary Pearce, Eric Gooden (background vocals). Producers: Richard Stannard, Matt Rowe, Absolute. Engineers: Adrian Bushby, Jeremy Wheatley, Al Stone. There's a long tradition in England of kiddie-pop bands who harmonize well, look good, sell syrup by the millions in the U.K. and can't get arrested in the U.S. The Spice Girls smash that mold by adding a point of view. Having more pop hooks than your average bait & tackle shop doesn't hurt either. The five Spice Girls met when they answered a would-be svengali's ad looking for young women who could sing and dance. He got more than he bargained for. They also had spunk, and one of their first acts was to fire him and take control of their own career. The group co-wrote every song on SPICE, and it's an audacious debut on the order of Madonna's first LP. The girls' songs, like Madonna's, are simultaneously about wanting sex and wanting empowerment; their mantra is "girlpower." These are new kids on the block who've actually been around the block a few times. Calling their debut single "Wannabe" is merely the most obvious nod to the queen of pop; they pay further homage in the brazen way they grab for any pop style within reach. Hip-hop, dancehall reggae, dance-club beats and soft balladry and all thrown into this spicy pop stew with utter abandon. Vocal lines are wantonly tossed back and forth among the five like unsuspecting suitors. If they can figure out a way to keep it up, watch out. SKU: 1004966

In The Fishtank
Amsterdam label Konkurrent's "In the Fishtank" EP series allows artists to experiment with different approaches in an off-the-cuff setting. For Tortoise's Fishtank session, the Chicago post-rockers decided tocollaborate with Dutch punk band The Ex. The results are an original, unusual mixture of Tortoise's subtle, dubby grooves and The Ex's angular, hard-hitting, guitar-driven attack. Over the course of six tunes, the two bands join together to create a constantly shifting vortex of sound that's alternately meditative and aggressive. There's more urgency here than on any of Tortoise's previous recordings, but the complex textural palette that is the Tortoise trademark is nevertheless well represented. SKU: 1023266

Eye Of Every Storm, The
Art-noisetitans' eighth proper studio album follows 2001's 'A Sun That Never Sets'. A slightly more commercial proposition than their earlier work, it alternates their trademark crushing, claustrophobic riffage with a lighter, more atmospheric feel derived from their work in their ambient industrial alter-ego Tribes Of Neurot and clearly shows the influence they have had on bands such as Tool and Isis. Lost Tapes Vol.1, The [PA]
Contains an untitled hidden track after "Poppa Was A Playa." Producers include: Deric Angelettie, Precision, The Alchemist, L.E.S., Rockwilder. With I AM and STILLMATIC, Nas assuredhimself a permanent place in the history of hip-hop. The release of THE LOST TAPES, a collection of previously unreleased cuts recorded at those legendary sessions, adds to this considerable legacy. With most of these songs already cropping up as bootlegs on select underground mix tapes, this is the first official release featuring these songs mastered as Nas intended. Working with a number of sympathetic producers including The Alchemist, L.E.S., and Rockwilder, this gifted rhyme merchant drops captivating rhymes reflecting everyday life growing up in the Queensbridge projects, over a an assortment of mellow soul grooves. Using samples by Barry White ("No Ideas Original"), Mandrill ("U Gotta Love It"), and Eddie Kendricks ("Poppa Was A Playa"), Nas avoids any cameos or hype, presenting hip-hop in a stripped-down state that reaffirms the man's reputation as one of the genre's true legends. Small Faces
The 1997 release of SMALL FACES contains 5 additional tracks not contained on the original release. The Small Faces: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ian "Mac" McLagan (vocals, guitar, organ); Ronnie "Plonk" Lane (vocals, organ); Kenney Jones (drums). Includes liner notes by John Reed and Tony Brainsby. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley and Simon Heyworth. In 1965, Small Faces came blasting out of England with style, wild abandon, andhits. But those hits were limited to the United Kingdom and Europe, failing to make inroads in the United States until the band's restructuring as The Faces in 1970. Much like the early Who, Small Faces had an exuberance that threatened to detonate the band's songs but instead kept the players rolling forward with unrelenting fervor. Small Faces' debut album shows a band able to both tackle tunes from the belly of American R&B and to offer up its own bracing originals. Check out "It's Too Late," impressive by any standards but all the more so when one considers that these guys were barely into their '20s. Steve Marriott, a singer who could shout with the best of them, fronted Small Faces. His rasp is infectious, believable, and highly controlled, never sounding like the affectation of a young guy who wants to sound like an old bluesman. Those who are only familiar with Small Faces from the band's later incarnation as the Rod Stewart-fronted Faces should look into SMALL FACES for an earful of how it all began. SKU: 1014870

Gospel Truth, The
Personnel: Otis Clay, Isaac Young (vocals); Criss Johnson (guitar, bass, drum programming); Bennie Turner (guitar, bass, background vocals); Sonny Mitchell (guitar); Dedrick Blanchard (piano, organ); Theodis Rogers (piano); Frank Wynn (organ); Greg Rzab, Anthony Grady, Richard Gibb (bass); Perry Randall, Melvin Crisp, Edward Junior, Terry Hall (drums); Barbara Acklin, Dianne Womack, Wells Wallace, Fred Pettis, Sylvester Hudson, A.J. Durr, Frank Harris, Odell Carter (background vocals). Recorded at P & S Studio, Redwood Studio and Mack Simmons Studio, Chicago, Illinois; Tanglewood Studio, Brookfield, Illinois. Although he's known as one of the great latter-day soul singers, Clay spent much of his adolescence in a touring gospel group with his family; on this album, he returns to his roots. It's mostly traditional fare, heavy on the piano and Hammond organ, although a few tunes have a mid '70s disco groove. In any case, Clay sings all of them with a gorgeous mixture ofpassion and delicacy. His voice brings to mind, inevitably, Sam Cooke's work with the Soul Stirrers, in particular on "Every Road (Got to End Somewhere). Historical note: R&B singer Barbara Acklin, who co-wrote the Chi-Lites hit "Have You Seen Her" can be heard here on background vocals. SKU: 1012152
