Not So Soft
Solo performer: Ani DiFranco (vocals, acoustic guitar, congas). Recorded at AudioMagic, Buffalo, New York in September 1991. Having announced herself with a quietly intense folk-style debut (ANI DIFRANCO) in 1990, this Buffalo, New York-based singer/songwriter-still barely into her 20s-almost entirely reinvented herself with the aptly titled follow-up NOT SO SOFT. Whereas much of her debut album recalled both Joni Mitchell and Suzanne Vega, DiFranco here jettisons stark acoustic beauty and instead fields a much more unique and personal vocal style. On NOT SO SOFT, DiFranco uses a rougher, talk-singing style, her lower-register delivery owing much to both Patti Smith and Lou Reed yet more nakedly emotional. DiFranco also adds brasher acoustic guitar, a heavily rhythmic playing style that gives the album a fuller, more rock & roll-oriented sound than the often- delicate debut. Her songwriting is equally improved. She examines personal and political issues while sidestepping preachiness and stridency, even on the spoken-word title track. NOT SO SOFT is an exciting, passionate folk album with punk intensity. SKU: 1071603

Definitive Blues Brothers Collection, The
This release compiles the best tracks recorded by the spoof R&B band - started as a warm-upact for the TV show Saturday Night Live by comics Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi - which went on to become a bona fide music phenomenon. Performing upbeat versions of classic soul and blues hits, they introduced a whole new generation to the Stax and Motown sound and remain a cult hit even today, more than 20 years after Belushi's death. Second Coming
The SECOND COMING CD contains an untitled song on track 41. The Stone Roses: John Squire (vocals, guitar); Reni (vocals, drums, percussion); Ian Brown (vocals); Mani (bass). Additional personnel: Simon Dawson (keyboards, castanets, jaw harp); Nick (tambourine); Brian Pugsley (programming). Producers: Simon Dawson, Paul Schroeder. Engineers include: Simon Dawson, Paul Schroeder, John Leckie. The title is a joking reference to the messianic anticipation that built up in the years between the Manchester, England rock band's 1989 debut--which Britain's New Musical Express magazine ranked as the greatest album of the '80s--and this 1995 follow-up. It's also a description of the Stone Roses' sound, a sort of second coming of '60s and '70s blues-rock, re-born with a funk beat. Back in '89 it sounded like a revolution, and it was: crossing Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan with club music, it helped set the template for all British alternative rock to follow, from Blur to the revamped U2. Lenny Kravitz is among the Americans who owes a debt. SECOND COMING consolidates that sound with a see-sawing mix of hard-rock driving songs--with chunky electric guitar riffs and big beats--and acoustic anthems that immediately sound like they've been on the radio for a dozen years or more. The latter group includes "Ten Storey Love Song," a devotional ballad with a Dylan-esque melody, and "Your Star Will Shine," a psychedelic folk ditty that would have fit on an early Bee Gees album. "GoodTimes" is one of the big-beat numbers, and although it starts out sounding like a very blue Eric Burdon, it builds into a classic shouted-out blues-rock chorus, the kind on which FM radio thrived in the 1970s. "Tears" follows a Zeppelin-esque arc from acoustic to electric folk. Which, no doubt, is the exact route a lot of hard-rock devotees think any second coming should follow. SKU: 1006393

Grand Prix
Teenage Fanclub: Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley (vocals, guitar); Gerald Love (vocals, bass); Paul Quinn (drums). Additional personnel: David Bianco (vocals, guitar, piano); Jules Singleton, Sonia Slany (violin); Jocelyn Pook (viola); Dinah Beamish (cello); Nigel Hitchcock (alto saxophone); Jamie Talbot (tenor saxophone); Chris White (baritone saxophone); Steve Sidwell (trumpet); Dave Barker, Chas Banks, Jim Parsons (handclaps). Recorded at The Manor, Shipton-on-Cherwell, England between September 5 and October 9, 1994. The adorable Fannies are in danger of becoming a 'much-loved institution' like the Kinks and XTC: great for warm-hearted feelings, but lousy for record sales. Grand Prix breaks the band's Byrdsian mould slightly, but there are enough jangly G chords to satisfy everyone. Virtually every song is a flawless gem, complete with the most precise harmonies; each rolls into the next with love and care, played, sung and produced with supremeclarity. With the fantastic boon of possessing three talented songwriters, TFC offer plenty of variety; in particular, Gerard Love's irresistible 'Sparky's Dream' achieves classic pop song status, and his 'Don't Look Back' is this accomplished album's highlight. Luck Be A Weirdo Tonight
Can Fila Brazillia cook or can't it? Forget everything you've ever heard about downtempo. Ignore the pundits who deride British trip-hop, citing their utter confusion over the term and its practitioners. Distance yourself from thosewho pillory the fact that much of the Ninja Tune/NineBar/Pork contingent is responsible for the most flaccid of tunes and the most gutless of grooves. Fila Brazillia perhaps epitomizes all that is right in the giant melting pot we call "electronica." Yeah, there's jazz--there's lots of jazz ("Weasel Out the Muck"). There's silly dub antics ("Rustic Bellyflop"), there's bass-fuzz hip-hop ("Do the Hale-Bopp"), and, of course, there's outright electro-weirdness ("Hells Rarebit"). There is, in fact, a little something for anyone with catholic-enough tastes. One basically has to let the bizarreness and instrumental prowess of the Fila Brazillians just flow over the head like aural molasses. It's a glorious noise. SKU: 1060897

Trespass
Genesis: Anthony Phillips(vocals, acoustic, 12-string & electric guitars, dulcimer); Michael Rutherford (vocals, acoustic guitar, cello, acoustic & electric basses); Anthony Banks (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, Mellotron); Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute, accordion, bass drum, tambourine); John Mayhew (vocals, drums, percussion). Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England. TRESPASS is more pastoral and low-key than the Genesis albums that followed it. The interplay between Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford finds the group at its folkiest and most subdued. Tony Banks hadn't yet turned to the synthesizer. Peter Gabriel had not yet reached the heights of poetic socio-political broadside that would mark such albums as FOXTROT. The anomaly here is "The Knife," a gloriously bombastic track full of classical motifs, thundering riffs and rhythms, and a strong anti-war message. It would become one of the most-loved early Genesis tunes. Drummer John Mayhew might be the Pete Best of prog-rock, as he was Genesis's original drummer, ultimately replaced by future bandleader Phil Collins. On this, Mayhew's final recording with Genesis, he shows taste and restraint, laying out for long sections while the sonic tapestries of the guitars and keyboards unfold. SKU: 1003770

Genius (The Best Of Warren Zevon)
Personnel includes: Warren Zevon (vocals, guitar, harmonica, electric piano, oragn, keyboards, percussion); Glen Frey,Don Henley, Phil Everly, Graham Nash, Neil Young, JD Souther, Linda Ronstadt, Lindsey Bukingham, Jackson Browne (vocals); Waddy Wachtel (guitar, background vocals); David Linley (steel guitar); Peter Buck (guitar); Charlie Bishharat, Joel Derouin (violin); Evan Wilson (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Jim Horn (saxophone); John McVie, Mike Mills, Larry Klein, Jorge Calderon (bass); Mick Fleetwood, Anton Fig, Bill Berry (drums). Producers include: Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne, Waddy Wachtel, Greg Ladanyi, Andrew Slater. Compilation producer: Warren Zevon, Gary Peterson. Includes liner notes by Will Self. To paraphrase the old saw, if Warren Zevon did not exist it would have been necessary to invent him. At a time when his L.A. singer-songwriter peers were bleeding all over their shirtsleeves with mawkish, sensitive balladry, Zevon turned the 1970s troubadour approach on its ear with a twisted lyrical sensibility that embraced danger, ribaldry, and general mayhem. A more concise summary than the two-disc collection I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD, GENIUS is an excellent thumbnail sketch of Zevon's iconoclastic work. The early years are well represented by the oddly poignant junkie's lament "Carmelita," the horror-of-war ghost story "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner," and of course, such misanthropic staples as "Excitable Boy" and "Werewolves of London." GENIUS stands to show, however, that the '70s weren't the end of Zevon's story. Zevon is backed by R.E.M. on the trenchant boxing tale "Boom Boom Mancini" and admirably covers Prince's "Raspberry Beret." He humorously sums up his life as a rogue on "Mr. Bad Example," and touchingly enough for a cancer victim, sounds unassailably resilient on "I Was in the House When the House Burned Down." GENIUS serves Zevon's legacy well, and helps ensure that he won't be forgotten. SKU: 1077049

Best Of Talking Heads, The
Talking Heads: Jerry Harrison (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, keyboards, synthesizer, bass instrument, percussion); David Byrne (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass instrument, percussion, bells); Tina Weymouth (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass instrument, percussion, background vocals); Chris Frantz (keyboards, drums, percussion). Additional personnel include: Brian Eno (piano, organ, synthesizer, bass instrument, percussion, background vocals); Bernie Worrell (synthesizer); Robert Palmer (percussion). Producers: Tony Bongiovi; Tommy Ramone; Brian Eno; Talking Heads. Recording information: 1977 - 1988. In the mid-1970s, a band of well-scrubbed art-school graduates appeared on the CBGB's scene in New York City. The name of this band was Talking Heads, and from '77 to '88, they released eight studio albums of inventive and utterly catchy avant-garde pop that turned the rock world on its ear. Fueled by vocalist/guitarist David Byrne's quirky, "I'm tense and nervous, and I can't relax" personality, thegroup seemed fully formed from the get-go, as evidenced by the martial rhythms and chiming guitars of "Love - Building on Fire" and the deranged funk of "Psycho Killer." Following this early era, THE BEST OF TALKING HEADS moves into the quartet's lengthy collaboration with sonic scientist Brian Eno, including the herky-jerky funk of their take on Al Green's "Take Me to the River," the desperate story-song "Life During Wartime," and the transcendent avant-pop masterpiece "Once in a Lifetime." Rounding out this BEST OF are the Heads' poppier, post-Eno songs ("Road to Nowhere," "And She Was," and others). Although there are more extensive Talking Heads collections out there (the two-disc POPULAR FAVORITES 1976-1992/SAND IN THE VASELINE and the three-CD/one-DVD box set ONCE IN A LIFETIME), this concise, single-disc compilation is an ideal introduction to the utterly unique sounds of this pioneering band. Come Down
The Dandy Warhols: Courtney Taylor, Peter Holstrom (vocals, guitar); Zia McCabe (vocals, keyboards, percussion); Eric Hedford (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tony Lash (keyboards, percussion). Recorded at Sound Impressions, Stiles Recording, Falcon Studios and Courtney's Apartment, Portland, Oregon. After striking gold with Everclear, Capitol Records returned to Portland and signed The Dandy Warhols, a quartet hip-deep in psychedelia-soaked pop songs that bring to mind everyone from Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd to The Jesus & Mary Chain. Songs range from the spacey, zero-gravity instrumental "Pete International Airport" to "Not If You WereThe Last Junky On Earth," a cheeky pop response to heroin chic that's slathered in kitschy 80's synths. Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor's songs burrow into the deepest folds of your brain, combining layers of swirling keyboards and sharp guitar work with attention-grabbing topics from the Moral Majority ("Hard On For Jesus") to the indier-than-thou cognoscenti ("Cool As Kim Deal"). Although the Dandy's spacey head music occasionally flirts with somnambulism, there's enough hooks and shiny parts thrown in to shake you out of any stupor. SKU: 3100651

Bardo Pond: Isobel Sollenberger (vocals, flute); Michael Gibbons, John Gibbons (guitar); Clint Takeda (bass); Joe Culver (drums). Recorded at Cycle Sounds, Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia. LAPSED, Bardo Pond's fourth album, brings to the forefront a bluesy brand of psychedelic rock damage that was less overtly expressed on previous records. Perhaps it's the prominence of vocalist/flautist Isobel Sollenberger on most of these seven cuts. She's showcased to especiallypowerful effect with the marble-mouthed, corroded slide-guitar lollings of "Pick My Brain." The twin guitar riffing of John and Michael Gibbons is even more honed, polished to a keen, cutting edge on the opening "Tommy Gun Angel" and the beautifully sculpted "Green Man." Magnitude is Bardo Pond's specialty, and LAPSED offers a pair of extended displays wherein the band's yin-and-yang inclinations are afforded full reign. On the epic "Aldrin," Clint Takeda's tantric basslines and Joe Culver's steady, hypnotic drumming entice Sollenberger and the Gibbons brothers up the spiral stairway to psychedelic heaven. "Flux," an overwhelming, mid-album eruption of barely restrained axemanship, annihilates Sollenberger's valiantly fluttering flute with a blitzkrieg of supersaturated mushroom-cloud guitar. I'm Lonely (And I Love It)
Future Bible Heroes includes: Stephin Merritt, Claudia Gonson (vocals); Christopher Ewen (various instruments). After the amazing "69 Love Songs," it's pretty safe to refer to Stephin Merritt as a genius. His skill and craftsmanship in service to the popular song puts him in the league of the great pop writers of the 20th Century. His lyrical wit can be funny, cutting, and heartbreaking simultaneously. It's never clever for the sake of being clever; it's always used to convey emotion. Merritt's various projects are cut from the same cloth. The technical difference with Future Bible Heroes is that Chris Ewen writes the music and Stephin writes the lyrics. Otherwise, this sounds like what The MagneticFields have done, and it's just as brilliant. And depending on what part of the roller coaster of romance you happen to be on, you can either sing or cry along to it. SKU: 1050308

Something Like This
Producers include: Jimmy Hilliard. Compilation producer: Bill Inglot. Engineers include: Lee Herschberg. Recorded between 1960 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Bill Inglot and Judy Brown. Unique among even the most cutting-edge standup comics of the '60s, Bob Newhart entertained his audiences not with snappy patter and jokes, butwith long monologues in which his voice represented one side of a conversation, the other side left to the listener's imagination. This idiosyncratic format proved endlessly adaptable, as Newhart spun seemingly endless scenarios from it. Before he became a beloved TV star with the Bob Newhart Show, he released several popular comedy albums, from which the best moments have been culled for inclusion on this definitive two-disc compilation. Whether he's advising Abraham Lincoln, confronting King Kong, or getting blitzed at a retirement party (among other comedic situations to be found here), Newhart employs his patented mild-mannered, "button-down" personality to subtle but sharp comic effect. Southern By The Grace Of God
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Randall Hall (vocals, guitar); Leon Wilkeson (vocals, bass); Johnny Van Zant, Donnie Van Zant (vocals); Ed King (guitar, Yamaha DX7, synthesizer); Gary Rossington, Jeff Carlisi, Toy Caldwell (guitar); Billy Powell (piano, organ, Yamaha DX7, synthesizer); Artimus Pyle (drums); Dale Krantz Rossington, Carol Bristow (background vocals). Recorded at Omega Audio & Productions and Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas, Starwood Ampitheatre, Nashville Tennessee in October & November, 1987. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragic plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, and Dean Killpatrick, Lynyrd Skynyrd regrouped for a very successful reunion tour in 1987. Such special guests as Steve Morse and Charlie Daniels (as well as Johnny Van Zandt filling in for his late brother, Ronnie), joined such Skynyrd veterans as Artimus Pyle, Bill Powell, Leon Wilkeson, and Gary Rossington, which is all captured on 1988's SOUTHERN BY THE GRACE OF GOD. While SOUTHERN is not on par with the original Skynyrd concert classic, ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, it is a fun collection nonetheless--you can't go wrong with such FM radio staples as "That Smell," "What's Your Name," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Sweet Home Alabama," and "Freebird." About A Boy (Original Soundtrack)
Music composed by Badly Drawn Boy aka Damon Gough. Producers: Tim Rothrock, Badly Drawn Boy. What's a budding musical genius to do in the pent-up lull between albums? Mercury Prize-winning singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy (nee Damon Gough), in his spare time between heralded debut THE HOUR OF BEWILDERBEEST, and a follow-up to be released later in 2002, approached the filmmakers adapting Nick Hornby's acclaimed novel ABOUT A BOY about the soundtrack for the film starring Hugh Grant. There's no question to the logic of the combination as Gough's sublimely literate, disaffected yet still charmingly breezy pop music fits the story of life's apparent losers at two stages of life, one an apathetic womanizer approaching his 40s, the other a bullied misfit boy passing into his teens, between whom an unlikely friendship ensues. A folky singer/songwriter scoring songs to help set the tone of a movie about unlikely friendship could stir up memories of Cat Stevens's unreleased soundtrack for "Harold & Maude," a fair enough assessment. In a similar fashion (butin its own way), Badly Drawn Boy's take on ABOUT A BOY weaves a mournful, yet upbeat tapestry drawing from its source material while managing to enrich the story itself. There are even some pop megahit hooks such as in the rolling "Silent Sigh" and in the head-bobbing, ostensible theme song "Something To Talk About." SKU: 6548926
