Marciac Suite, The
Wynton Marsalis Septet: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Victor Goines (soprano & tenor saxophones, bass clarinet); Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson (alto saxophone); Wycliffe Gordon (trombone); Marthaniel Roberts, Eric Lewis, Farid Barron, Cyrus Chestnut (piano); Rodney Whitaker (bass); Herlin Riley (drums). Additional personnel: Roland Guerrero (percussion). Principally recorded at Masonic Grand Lodge, New York, New York on February 1 & 2, 1999. Includes liner notes by Thomas Sancton. As a musician and composer, it could be said that Wynton Marsalis is regarded the world over as jazz royalty. Nowhere, however (next to his native New Orleans), is he revered more adoringly than the village of Marciac, France. The trumpeter returns here each summer to perform, teach, and live among the people who celebrate his greatness with such tributes as a life-sized bronze statue in his likeness. Marsalis reciprocates here with the 13-part jazz epic THE MARCIAC SUITE. The SUITE is gargantuan in scope. The individual movements, through texture, rhythm, and dramatic expression, paint a picture of the French hamlet that hashosted a renowned jazz festival for two decades. Marsalis expresses the joy of performing ("The Big Top"), the spirited local people ("Marciac Fun"), and the particular individuals who make it possible for jazz to flourish here ("Jean-Louis Is Everywhere," "Guy Lafitte"). The septet's performance is superb, pulling off Marsalis's difficult epic with stunning accuracy and expression. As a finale, Wynton Marsalis leaves us with a musical image of the natural beauty that awaits all who arrive at Marciac: vast fields of "Sunflowers." SKU: 1043169

Physical Graffiti [Remastered]
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, background vocals); John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards, background vocals); John Bonham (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano). Engineers include: Eddie Kramer, George Chkiantz, Andrew Johns. Recorded at Headley Grave, Hampshire, England; Olympic Studios and Islan, London, England; Stargroves, England between 1972 & 1974. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Led Zeppelin launched its new Swan Song label with the double-LP PHYSICAL GRAFFITI. Recording, which began in December 1973 and concluded in July 1974, took place in numerous locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio and The Rolling Stones' Mobile Studio. Recorded on the run as it were, PHYSICAL GRAFFITI codifies the stylisitc breakthroughs of Led Zeppelin's first five albums. The most well-known of its 15 tracks is "Kashmir," a typically mystical, Eastern-flavored rocker, fleshed out by Page's orchestral flourishes and Bonham's big-foot backbeat. John Paul Jones makes extensive use of electronic keyboards on "In The Light," and Robert Plant's turn on "Black Country Woman" is a sexy, playful nod to the Mississippi Delta. "The Wanton Song," "Trampled Under Foot" and "Houses Of The Holy" reflect Zeppelin's infatuation with funk, but with Zeppelin's distinctly hard-rock interpretation. "Bron-Yr-Aur" is a shimmering solo acoustic guitar excursion by Page, while "Boogie With Stu" is a charming showpiece for pianist Ian Stewart, a Rolling Stones sideman, with Page taking a very Chuck Berryish turn on mandolin. The album was released in the U.S. on February 24, 1975 and in the U.K. on the following day. SKU: 1004812

Swoon
Japanese import available onEpic/Sony (32 8P 132) with a running time of 40.47. Alongside debuts by the Smiths, Aztec Camera, Lloyd Cole, and others, Prefab Sprout's debut album, SWOON, announced a new, more guitar-based sound in British pop. In the case of this Newcastle, England, trio, that new sound features quirky, off-kilter acoustic-guitar-based songs equally beholden to Elvis Costello, Cole Porter, and Hank Williams and unique, knotty lyrics offering an idiosyncratic, often obscure, new slant on classic subjects like death, sex, and politics. While singer/songwriter Paddy McAloon's later albums are increasingly smooth and sophisticated, SWOON is prickly yet inviting, with songs like "Here on the Eerie," the harmonica-tinged "Don't Sing," and the whirling "Technique" simultaneously deeply strange and instantly engaging. While McAloon's graceful piano ballad "Cruel" foreshadows the compositional clarity and refinement of later albums like JORDAN: THE COMEBACK, the rest of SWOON is the sound of a young band with almost more ideas than it knows what to do with. Amplified Heart
Everything But The Girl: Tracey Thorn (vocals); Ben Watt (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, electric piano, mini-Moog). Additional personnel: Richard Thompson (guitar); Peter King (alto saxophone); Kate St. John (English horn); John Coxon, Ben Watt (keyboards, programming); Danny Thompson (acoustic bass); Dave Mattacks (drums); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Producers: Ben Watt, Tracey Thorn, John Coxon. Recorded in London, England in winter 1993. On AMPLIFIED HEART, this pop duo's mesmerizing blend of swooning Fleetwood Mac-like vocal textures and modern dance floor beats is a departure from their previously sparse, jazzy acoustic style, but is equally as beautiful. Out of a fertile territory of delicate melodies and precise musical passages, vocalist Tracey Thorn allows usto peer in at both her chilling memories and warmest moments. With the often overwhelming sincerity of Ben Watt's musical accompaniement to Thorn's settled vocals, AMPLIFIED HEART is everything adult-oriented pop needs to be. SKU: 1002980

Push 'n' Shove
Hepcat: Greg Lee (vocals, percussion); Aaron Owens (guitar); Efren Santana (tenor saxophone); Kincaid Smith (trumpet); Deston Berry (keyboards, background vocals); Dave Fuentes (bass); Scott Abels (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Karina Denike (vocals); Vince Hizon (alto saxophone); Andy Kaulkin (piano). Engineers include: Ted Scarlett, Wes Seidman, Brian Dixon. Recorded at Third Stone, Burbank, California and Sunburst Recording Studio, Culver City, California. Falling more between the sound of ska pioneers The Skatalites and the 1980s U.K. Two-Tone movement rather than the hybridized sound of third wavers No Doubt and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, L.A. natives Hepcat conjure up all sorts of rootsy purity on their fourth album. Like legendary session guitarist Ernest Ranglin, this septet displays an impressive range that covers many of Jamaica's musical shifts. With the punchy, out-in-front drumming punctuated by plenty of crisp rimshots and shuffling brushstrokes, Hepcat take on samba-flavored instrumentals ("The Ronnie"), soul singer Brenton Wood ("Gimme Little Sign"), and rock-steady romanticism ("You And I"). Former frontman Alex Desert even took a break from his acting duties to serve up vocals on Lord Funny's obscure calypso nugget "Tek Dat." Best of all is "Prison Of Love," a collaboration with Dancehall Crasher's Karina Denike who uses a sultry tone reminiscent ofreggae songbird Nadine Sutherland to add a smoky ambiance to this dub-heavy tune. Deep Concentration Vol.3
This is the third in Om Records' series of turntablist albums. DEEP CONCENTRATION and DEEPER CONCENTRATION, although heavily focused on turntablists, also featured some MC work, but on DEEP CONCENTRATION 3, the spotlight is firmly on the DJ. This compilation succeeds in assembling about the widest swath of turntablist tracks one could hope for. All are quality material, from People Under The Stairs' spacey head nodder "Afternoon Connection," through Musaic's dubbed-out downtempo work on "Babylon Rhythm Exorcism," to "Act Up," two-time Disco Mix Club (the Palm d'Or of DJs) world champion DJ Craze's cut-up madness, verging on drum-and-bass. There are both East and West Coast acts; serious underground hip-hop and more light-hearted "look Ma!" show-off beat-juggling and scratching. Clever samples abound, and when the DJs aren't being serious, they're being funny--lightning-fast hands allow a DJ to piece together witty phrases from dusty old records (see the Plagiawrists' "Wristy Business"). Just listen, and consider that what they're doing involves only two turntables, records, a mixer, andtheir hands. You'll wonder how they do it, too. SKU: 1035040

Wonderful World, A
Personnel: Tony Bennet, K.D. Lang (vocals); Gray Sargent (guitar); Lee Musiker (piano); Paul Langosch (bass); Clayton Cameron (drums). "What A Wonderful World" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. After numerous live performances and the occasional one-off recording together, legendary balladeer Tony Bennett and contemporary pop siren k.d. lang felt the call to make an entire album together. The fruits of that decision, asheard on A WONDERFUL WORLD, showcase the way in which the pair's styles, ostensibly polar opposites of honeyed sweetness and rough-hewn world-wisdom, complement each other perfectly. Listen to the way the duo's voices intertwine over the light Latin-inflected rhythm of "La Vie En Rose," the soft-and-easy swing of "Dream a Little Dream of Me," or the elegantly orchestrated closer "If We Never Meet Again" (to name but a few high points). That's the sound of two true artistes finding a common point from which each can enhance the other's artistry, a rare thing in any medium. SKU: 1080715

Different Stages
DIFFERENT STAGES contains two discs of live tracks recorded in 1994 & 1997 and a third disc of live tracks recorded in 1978. Disc one of DIFFERENT STAGES is an Enhanced CD containing a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, keyboards, bass pedals, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar, bass pedals, background vocals); Neal Peart (drums, acoustic & electronic percussion). Includes liner notes by Geddy Lee. One may wonder--do we really need a fourth live album from Rush? After one listen to this set, the answeris an emphatic YES! Modern production techniques make the band's classics sound clearer and more vibrant than ever. In addition, new musical twists and turns make the songs sound refreshingly new; an extra drum fill here, an extended bass hook there. The band seems to improve with age; 20-year-old tunes sound tighter than ever, with the live versions exceeding the studio ones. The package consists of three CD's: the first two were recorded in 1994 and 1997. The third is from 1978. After some '90s material is covered, the group launches into "2112," played in its entirety and impeccably done. "Analog Kid" and "Natural Science" are 2 other rarely performed songs that came off incredibly well. "The Rhythm Method" is a Neal Peart drum solo that takes arena rock skill and showmanship to the highest degree. DIFFERENT STAGES is a fantastic set by the Canadian powerhouse trio. SKU: 5066420

Waiting To Exhale
Personnel includes: Babyface (guitar, piano, Wurlitzer, keyboards, synthesizer, Vocoder, drum programming, background vocals); Reggie Griffin (guitar, saxophone); Michael Thompson (guitar); Bruce Dukov, Clayton Haslop (violin); Bob Becker (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Brandon Fields (saxophone); Greg Phillinganes, Alex Alessandroni, Patrice Rushen (piano); Nathan East (bass); Larry Bunker (timpani, percussion); Luis Conte, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Track Masters (drum programming); Kevon Edmonds, Melvin Edmonds, Marc Nelson, Debra Killings (background vocals). All songs written by Babyface except "This Is How It Works" (Babyface/Lisa Lopes), "And I Gave My Love To You" (Babyface/Sonja Marie), "Count On Me" (Babyface/Whitney Houston/Michael Houston) and "My Funny Valentine" (Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart). "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)," written by Babyface, won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. WAITING TO EXHALE was nominated for 10 additional Grammys. The album was nominated for Album Of The Year, and "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" was also nominated for Song Of The Year and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. "Sittin' Up In My Room," another Babyface composition, was also nominated for Best R&B Song. "It Hurts Like Hell," also by Babyface, and "Count On Me," by Babyface, Michael Houston and Whitney Houston, were also nominated for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. Whitney Houston & CeCe Winans' performance of "Count On Me" was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "Not Gon' Cry" (Mary J. Blige), "Sittin' Up In My Room" (Brandy) and "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (Whitney Houston) were all nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Just as the film version of Terry McMillan's novel WAITING TO EXHALE explores the relationship between four African-American women, the Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds-produced soundtrack features only the female rulers of the Black Music charts. As a unified collection, it allows the ladies to state their case to the world (albeit on the strength of mostly Babyface-penned songs). It also gives hip-hop-soul princesses (SWV, Faith Evans, Brandy) a chance to rub shoulders with soul music's reigning queens (Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Toni Braxton), and represents the passing of the torch from the old school to the new school artists. At the forefront of WAITING TO EXHALE are two tracks by Whitney Houston, who also stars in the film. The gentle "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" plays like an early-'60s girl-group ballad, butcarries the instrumental trappings of modern soul, with Houston softly articulating on the inner answers of the heart's self-generating questions. Though she finds herself asking these very same questions on "Why Does It Hurt So Bad," she's nowhere near as underspoken. As the background vocals drive the ballad towards a forceful crescendo, Whitney steps into the light, delivering escalated vocal swoops and between-l SKU: 1005165

Congregation
Afghan Whigs: Greg Dulli, Rick McCollum (guitar, vocals); John Curley (bass, vocals); Steve Earle (drums). Additional personnel: Ruby Belle (vocals); Lance (piano, vocals); Shecky Stein (piano); Shawn Smith (background vocals). Recorded at Bear Creek, Woodinville, Washington and Buzz's Kitchen, Los Angeles, California in July andAugust 1991. The third Afghan Whigs album, 1992's CONGREGATION, turns on one clear thematic axis: relationships going bad. CONGREGATION's emotional terrain covers the straits between man and heroin ("I'm Her Slave") and those between men and women. Varying the Sub Pop "grunge" formula, the Whigs stretch their wings musically, including several clean-sounding slow songs. If not for the subject matter, these could probably be called ballads. Drummer Steven Earle hammers out solid frames for Rick McCollum's guitar showmanship, but this is really singer and lyricist Greg Dulli's hour. His emerging persona as damaged sinner is in full force here. The aggressive, snarling predator of "Conjure Me" promises to "Turn on you, before you turn on me." Elsewhere, Dulli offers the downright mean-spiritedness of "you were only mean to me" ("This is My Confession") and a sickening transformation into "Let Me Lie To You"'s soothing crooner of "I won't ever hurt you." A secret bonus track, "Miles Iz Dead," closes the album with a chilling chorus of "Don't forget the alcohol." Previewing the UPTOWN AVONDALE EP, a cover of "The Temple" (from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR) demonstrates the group's knack for transforming covers into Afghan Whigs originals. SKU: 1016152

52nd Street [ECD] [Remastered]
This edition of 52ND STREET is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video clips for the songs "Big Shot," "Honesty" and "My Life." Personnel includes: Billy Joel (vocals, harmonica, piano, keyboards); Eric Gale, Hugh McCracken, David Spinozza, Russell Javors, Steve Khan, David Brown (guitar); George Marge (sopranino saxophone); Richie Cannata (saxophone, organ); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Robert Freedman (horns); Mike Manieri (vibraphone, percussion); Doug Stegmeyer (bass); Liberty DeVito, David Friedman, Ralph MacDonald (percussion); Peter Cetera, Donnie Dacus, Frank Floyd, Babi Floyd, Zachary Sanders, Ray Simpson, Milt Grayson (background vocals). Recorded at A&R Recording, Inc., New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. Every major artist has at least one record that is the consummate definition of their style. Billy Joel has several. 52ND STREET, however, may be at the top of the heap.Following the ridiculously successful THE STRANGER, Joel didn't rest on his laurels. Instead he kept his songwriting skills moving forward into even deeper areas of exploration. His uniquely personal tales of emotional defiance and blue collar struggles take different, and sometimes darker forms this time to reveal an even richer creative side to the tough kid from Levittown. This collection finds the piano man in a very solitary mood as he struggles with the influence of those around him in the raucous "Big Shot" and the beautiful ballad "Honesty." One of Joel's many signature songs, "My Life," is among the best anthems of self reliance ever written. The very creative "Zanzibar" and "Rosalinda's Eyes" explore jazz and Latin influences, respectively. Finally, the lesser known gem "Until The Night" is a grandiose tale of longing that is the emotional apex of the entire album. The end result is a stellar work that effectively puts the cap on the '70s phase of Joel's career. SKU: 1011743

Includes an 80-page booklet with liner notes by Alice Cooper, Michael Bruce, John Lydon, Elton John, Dick Clark, Bono, Penn Jillette, Mike Myers, David Johansen, Joey Ramone and Burt Bacharach. Shock rock legend Alice Cooper has been making audiences squirm for over 30 years and his wealth of material unquestionably befits a box set. Nearly a decade in the making, this 4 CD package is everything an Alicephile could want. Demos, unreleased tracks, alternate takes, live material, and pre-Alice are all here. All the artist's eras are covered in depth. Cooper completists will marvel at the 1965-1967 tunes (pre-Alice groups The Spiders and The Nazz). This is followed by mandatory classics such as "Eighteen," "School's Out," "Billion Dollar Babies" and "Under My Wheels" (another version also appears with Axl, Slash and Izzy from Guns n' Roses). "I Love The Dead," and "Cold Ethyl" also flesh out the 70's era material. The glam metal explosion in the 80's helped resurge Alice's career, as "He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)" and "Poison" introduced Cooper to a new generation. Guest appearances by Ozzy Osbourne, Nicki Sixx, Rob Zombie and Chris Cornell round out the 90's. THE LIFE is a must for Cooper diehards, and is recommended for everyone else. SKU: 1075333

Live In Swing City (Swingin' With Duke)
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra: Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson, Ted Nash (alto saxophone); Victor Goines (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Walter Blanding Jr. (tenor saxophone); Joe Temperley (baritone saxophone); Wynton Marsalis, Seneca Black, Ryan Kisor, Marcus Printup (trumpet); Wayne Goodman, Wycliffe Gordon, Ronald Westray (trombone); Cyrus Chestnut (piano); Rodney Whitaker (bass); Herlin Riley (drums). Additional personnel: Dianne Reeves, Milt Grayson (vocals); Illinois Jacquet (tenor saxophone). Engineers include: Daryl Bornstein, David Hewitt, Nate Hewitt. Recorded live at The Supper Club, New York, New York from August 25-27, 1998. With his Lincoln Center jazz program firmly in place, the late '90s found Wynton Marsalis poised to achieve his career-long goal: making jazz the new classical music. Ensembles like the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and albums like this one may very well usher jazz into a new millennium where it's afforded an appropriate amount of respect. Marsalis has a keen sense of history, as evidenced by this tribute to the music of Duke Ellington. The thick, robust alto sax of Wessell Anderson and the grand, vibrant voicings of pianist Cyrus Chestnut lend a warmth and geniality to this program of Ellington classics. As the Orchestra moves through chestnuts like "C Jam Blues," "Black and Tan Fantasy" and "Mood Indigo," a deeper tribute to Duke becomes apparent. Despite the prowess of the soloists, the players sound dedicated to the ensemble dynamic above all else. There can be no plainer mark of Ellington's influence. SKU: 1005349

Dummy
Portishead: Beth Gibbons (vocals); Adrian Utley (guitar, Hammond organ, bass, Theremin); Geoff Barrow (Fender Rhodes piano, drums, programming). Additional personnel: Strings Unlimited (strings); Dave McDonald (nose flute); Andy Hague (trumpet); Neil Solman (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond organ); Gary Baldwin (Hammond organ); Clive Deamer (drums); Richard Newell (programming). Recorded at State Of The Art and Coach House Studios, Bristol, England. Named for a town near Bristol, England, Portishead is a British dance band that grabs ideas from all over the mod pop world (spaghetti Western guitars, turntable scratching, melancholy soul vocals, atmospheric organs, house beats) and stirs them into spacey, dub-like productions that sound like a dance club in the middle of a "Twin Peaks" dream. You could call it surreal hip-hop pop. But if the beats on the band's debut album achieve a kind of trance-like static, the songs themselves reach for something more rousing. With understatedlyrics and overstated melodies, singer Beth Gibbons and bandleader Geoff Barrow write insinuatingly melancholy dance ballads that ebb and flow like waves through rustling waters. Organs quaver in quiet tremolos, guitars emit squiggles and turntables hiccup, while Gibbons, in a high, cutting voice that evokes a less breathy Sinead O'Connor, sings songs of longing and heartbreak with equally palpable emotion. Relics [Remastered]
Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, piano, organ); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). Producers: Norman Smith, Joe Boyd, Pink Floyd. RELICS collects Pink Floyd's first two singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play," in addition to tracks from their early albums (1967-1969). Pink Floyd achieved their greatest success after their enigmatic leader, Syd Barrett, left the band. Originally released in 1971, RELICS documents the transition from Barrett's LSD-influenced psychedelic rock to Waters' manic-depressive-psychedelic rock. The organ-laced "Arnold Layne," and "See Emily Play" with its harpsichord break and nonsensical lyrics, are representative of the mod-pop music coming out of London circa 1967, at which Barrett excelled. The instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive," hints at the type of extended space-rock jams that Roger Waters and the rest of the band would seize upon once Barrett left. Keyboardist Rick Wright contributes two tunes, "Remember A Day" and "Paintbox," showing that he was coming into his own as a songwriter before his creative voice was squashed by the overbearing Waters. By 1971 it was clear that Pink Floyd was Roger Waters' band, with the occasional contribution by one of the other members, most notably guitarist David Gilmour, who replaced Barrett and carried on the band's name years after Waters had disowned it.
