Gone Again
Personnel: Patti Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jeff Buckley (vocals, essrage); Lenny Kaye (acoustic & electric guitars); Oliver Ray (acoustic & electric guitars, whistle); Tom Verlaine (electric guitar, guitar); Cesar Diaz (electric guitar); Malcolm Burn (guitar, dulcimer); Sperbs, Whit Smith (guitar); Kimberly Smith (mandolin); Eileen Ivers (fiddle); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Rick Kiernan (saw); John Cale (organ); Luis Resto (keyboards); Tony Shanahan (bass); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums); Hearn Gadbois (percussion). Recorded at Electric Lady, New York, New York. With her first release since the self-imposed exile that followed 1988's DREAM OF LIFE, Patti Smith reclaims her title as the original punk poet. Though the songs on GONE AGAIN bear little relationship to the punk movement that she helped spawn in the mid-'70s, thedefiant, fiercely individualistic spirit of her early recordings remains intact. GONE AGAIN has a moody, elegiac feel, as many of the songs are inspired by Smith's recent encounters with tragedy: the deaths of her husband and collaborator Fred "Sonic" Smith; her longtime friend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe; and her brother Todd. Smith is that rarest of birds, a songwriter whose poetic reach does not exceed her grasp. Even during her eight-year recording hiatus, she never stopped writing poetry, and the raw, vivid imagery of songs like "Beneath The Southern Cross," "The Raven" and the downright Rimbaudesque "Summer Cannibals" are prime examples of her lyrical prowess. The passing of her loved ones has forced Smith to look more deeply into her own heart, and these compositions reveal a deepened, almost transcendent perspective that makes GONE AGAIN sound like hard-won wisdom being whispered in your ear. Sextet
In the early '80s, punk-funk forged a meeting place for black and white pop music traditions, and brought new wave to the dance floor while (initially) retaining an unassailably hip veneer. In New York, this feat was accomplished by the likes of minimalist scenesters Liquid Liquid, and groove savants ESG. On the other side of the pond in the U.K., nobody did it better than A Certain Ratio. SEXTET, the group's third recording, is widely acclaimed as one of its best. While there's plenty of the bleak artiness (including some decidedly Joy Division-like touches) and spaced-out dub that made ACR a Factory Records favorite, there's an added sense of structure. New vocalist Martha Tilson, while nobody's idea of a soul sister, leavens the darkness of the mood somewhat (don't worry, she neverfully succeeds), and brings focus to the compositions. Throughout the album, syncopated slap-bass lines, ambient guitar washes, and postmodern horns mesh in a glorious celebration of the disaffected dance that was ACR's stock in trade. SKU: 6564693

There's Something About Mary
Original music written by Jonathan Richman. Producers include: Johathan Richman, Brad Wood, Tony Lash, Courtney Taylor, Gavin MacKillop. Engineers include: Michael C. Ross, Dennis Hetzendorfer. The soundtrack for THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY bucks the '90s trend among romantic comedy soundtracks by not focusing on classic songs from the '60s or '80s. Instead, what you get is a set of songs from late '90s up-and-comers, all anchored by three whimsical little ditties from Jonathan Richman, who also composed the score. With tunes ranging from The Dandy Warhols' electronics-heavy "Every Day Should Be A Holiday" to The Push Stars' indie-rock "Everything Shines" and the Propellerheads' curio "History Repeating," which features Shirley Bassey (of Goldfinger fame) on vocals, there is something here to satisfy every taste. And nostalgia junkies need have no fear: Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him"and The Foundations' "Build Me Up Buttercup" will satiate the retro jones. SKU: 1000309

Homeless Is Where The Heart Is
HOMELESS WHERE THE HEART IS is packaged in a digipack and includes a full color poster. Personnel: Barbara Manning (vocals, guitar, bass); Fabrizio Steinbach (guitar, bass); Lolo Blumler (organ); Flavio Steinbach (drums). Recorded atIron Bar Studio, Darmstadt, Germany from April 10-April 17, 1999. Includes liner notes by Lolita Opless. Barbara Manning, one of the San Francisco Bay Area's alt rock leading lights (SF Seals, World Of Pooh, 28th Day, solo), has relocated to Germany, and organized a new band, the "power trio" Happy-Go-Luckys The EP HOMELESS WHERE THE HEART IS is a stylistic departure from her last album, the more elaborately produced, superb 1212. The sound is stripped-down, clangorous guitars/bass/drums--a kind of sparer, harsher, Sleater-Kinney-meets-Neil Young circa LIVE RUST/REACTOR. The guitars jangle, with more edge than prettiness. The heartfelt angst of relocation and starting-anew is palpable, yet there's no self-absorbed whining to be found here. "Old Woman" thrashes like Wire circa PINK FLAG, and there's a chillingly defiant, brittle remake of 1212's "Isn't Lonely Lovely" The bittersweet, haunting, mid-'60s- tinged melodicism of her earlier work is still here, yet Manning sings with plaintive poise and hard-won maturity. HOMELESS is a haunting & cathartic listen. SKU: 6425450

More Love Songs
Personnel includes: Loudon Wainwright III (vocals, guitar, cymbals); Chaim Tannenbaum (vocals, banjo, harmonica, saxophone); Maria Muldaur (vocals); Peter Filleul (keyboards); Ruari McFarlane (bass); Dave Mattacks (drums); Danny Thompson, Christine Collister, Martin Carthy, John Kilpatrick. This is the second in a pair of albums that Loudon Wainwright recorded in the mid-'80s with producer Richard Thompson. As with its predecessor, I'M ALRIGHT, MORE LOVE SONGS benefits greatly from Thompson, who as a songwriter himself, brings deft support to the arrangements. The ensemble is at times large, incorporating horns, fiddles, and accordion, besides the usual core of guitars, bass, keyboards, mandolin, and drums. The opening number, "Hard Day on the Planet," replete with background singers, sounds like Wainwright's answer to the "We Are the World" anthems that popped up around the time of this album's release. Elsewhere he details the ups and downs of his life and relationships (a constant subject throughouthis career). MORE LOVE SONGS introduced such Wainwright classics as "You Mother and I," "I Eat Out," and "Unhappy Anniversary." SKU: 1080671

Steel Wheels
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards, percussion); Keith Richards (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Ron Wood (guitar, dobro, acoustic & electric basses, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Bachir Attar Farafina (various instruments); Phil Beer (mandolin, fiddle); Matt Clifford (strings, piano, electric piano, harmonium, clavinet, keyboards); Kick Horns (brass); Chuck Leavell (piano, organ, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards); Luis Jardin (percussion); Sonia Morgan, Bernard Fowler, Sarah Dash, Lisa Fischer, Tessa Niles (background vocals); Master Musicians Of Jajouka. Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). 20-plus years after "Satisfaction" the Rolling Stones were still at it, pumping out gritty rock and roll and playing to huge, adoring crowds. Later records sound fuller, the production a bit cleaner, but the Stones still sound like the Stones. STEEL WHEELS, released in 1989, was the first studio album by the band since 1986's DIRTY WORK. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had put out solo records in 1987 and 1988 respectively, and the reformed band got back into the studio fora record they would launch a massive world tour to support. It was the last studio effort upon which original bassist Bill Wyman would play. The album yielded two strong singles, "Mixed Emotions," which is buoyed by one of the stronger choruses of late-era Stones, and the nasty rocker "Rock and a Hard Place." Beginning with the line "The fields of Eden are full of trash," the song seems a genuine gesture of empathy for victims of a callous world. "Continental Drift" is the album's most unusual track, a powerful, Middle-Eastern-tinged number with "African instruments" played by the legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka. On the country-flavored "Blinded By Love," the Stones' show their long-standing appreciation for rootsy American music. SKU: 5048671

Jefferson Airplane Takes Off
This newly remastered 2003 deluxe edition contains bonus tracks. Jefferson Airplane: Marty Balin, Signe Toly Anderson (vocals); Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals); Jorma Ludwik Kaukonen (guitar); Jack Casady (bass); Alex "Skip" Spence (drums). Originally released on RCA Victor (3584).Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin. There is a reason why the Jefferson Airplane was the first nationally renowned proponent of San Francisco rock. As much as they bucked establishment values, the sextet offered a musical mixture of California folk-rock and white blues that was nevertheless easier to digest than the sounds of their contemporaries. TAKES OFF, their debut recording, made before Grace Slick joined the band, goes to great lengths to establish them as the obvious next step on a pop staircase of the Beatles, Byrds, and Rolling Stones. Signe Anderson and Marty Balin's distinctive, folky harmonies give TAKES OFF a lived-in warmth and a loved-in counterculture vibe that defined the times. Covers of John D. Loudermilk's infamous "Tobacco Road" and The Youngbloods' '60s anthem "Let's Get Together" may have symbolized their community's alienation from their parents' values, but the Airplane versions were less calls to arms than sympathetic pats on the back. However, Jorma Kaukonen's boppy R&B guitar leads and Jack Casady's free but steady bass lend the Airplane's debut some heavy rock muscle. SKU: 1085636

Big Express, The [Remastered]
XTC includes: Andy Partridge (vocals, electric guitar, harmonica, electronic drums); Colin Moulding (vocals, bass); David Gregory (electric guitar, piano, Mellotron, synthesizer). Additional personnel includes: Annie Huchrak (vocals); Stuart Gordon (violin, viola); Steve Saunders (euphonium); Peter Phipps (drums). Recorded at Crescent Studios, Bath, England in 1984. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In the XTC canon, THE BIG EXPRESS (1984) and its predecessor MUMMER are generally overlooked as merely the two albums between the more commercially successful ENGLISH SETTLEMENT and SKYLARKING. THE BIG EXPRESS is, in fact, a more consistent album--if only because it isn't quite as ambitious--and it contains at least two absolute classic XTC songs, "All You Pretty Girls" and "Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her." The latter of these spawned an unlikely number of covers and at least one band who took the track's title as their unwieldy moniker. Standouts include the barreling music-hall approach of Colin Moulding's "Washaway," Andy Partridge's "The Everyday Story of Smalltown," and the weird, herky-jerky rhythm of "I Bought Myself a Liarbird." Shot through withthe band's trademark take on English psychedelia, THE BIG EXPRESS should not be passed over. Rock & roll trainspotters will appreciate both the similarities between this album's "Wake Up" and Kate Bush's "Waking the Witch" from her 1985 album THE HOUNDS OF LOVE, and those of "Shake Your Donkey Up" and "Ride Your Donkey" from Joe Strummer's 1989 album EARTHQUAKE WEATHER. Scarecrow
Personnel: Garth Brooks (vocals); Trisha Yearwood, George Jones (vocals); Mark Casstevens, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Gordon Kennedy (acoustic guitar); Chris Leuzinger (electric guitar); Bruce Bouton (steel & slide guitars); Rob Hajacos, Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle); Bela Fleck (banjo); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Terry McMillan (harmonica); Joey Miskulin (accordion); Bobby Wood (keyboards); Mike Chapman, Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass); Sam Bacco (drums, percussion); Milton Sledge (drums); Sam Bush. Recorded at Jack's Tracks Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. "Squeeze Me In" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. After his head-scratching masquerade as a fictional rocker and a heavily publicized early retirement from show business, most folks thought that the Garth Brooks era in country music was over.Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Nashville, here comes SCARECROW, a confident return to form for Brooks. Having apparently gotten that nasty rock thing out of his system, he returns to the wide-screen, Springsteen-with-spurs brand of pop-country that made him a mega-star in the '90s. The first album of new Garth Brooks tunes of the 21st century pretty much picks up where records like ROPIN' THE WIND and NO FENCES left off. There's even a light-hearted duet with honky-tonk legend George Jones on "Beer Run" for any who were doubtful about Brooks's return to country music. The rest of SCARECROW is made up of power ballads, high-energy roadhouse romps (most notably the Trisha Yearwood duet on "Squeeze Me In," and the singular pop/rock/country paradigm upon which Nashville based the marketing plans of a thousand lesser imitators. Elliot Smith
Personnel: Elliott Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rebecca Gates (vocals); Neil Gust (guitar). Recorded at Leslie's and Tony's houses, Portland, Oregon in January and February 1995. Oregon-based Elliot Smith was a long shot underdog for commercial success. A decidedly grim-natured whisperer, Smith is the antithesis of Oregon's celebrated grunge scene. He eschews fuzz-laden power chords and rhythmic sludge for stark acoustics and hushed intensity. Thequiet force of this release is deceptively low key. Underneath the stark and fragile beauty, Smith seethes with steely determination. The tightly wound claustrophobia is relieved by his unerring melodic sense. The album's best songs ("Needle in the Hay," "St. Ides Heaven," and "Killing the Southern Belle") are littered with addicts, drunks, bitterness, and isolation; but Smith's tunefulness lifts the album toward a disturbing beauty. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Original score composed by John Williams. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by George Lucas and John Williams. STAR WARS EPISODE 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. It was over 20 years ago that John Williams and The London Symphony Orchestra created the soundtrack for the original STAR WARS film (recently dubbed A NEW HOPE). The winning combination of Williams and the London Symphony return to score STAR WARS - EPISODE 1. Under the frame by frame instructions of George Lucas, Williams has delivered another symphonic masterpiece. Like the scores for the original trilogy, this album begins with "Star Wars Main Title," one of the most recognizable themes in movie history. This is followed by "Duel of the Fates," the album's first single and video, and a very powerful piece of music. The succession of trumpet blasts, smashing cymbals and choral chants have given a new generation of Star Wars fans an instantly hummable tune, just as "The Imperial March" did 19 years ago in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Williams has an uncanny ability to create music that perfectly fits the mood of the scene. Presented with a completely new set of characters to work with and new emotional territory to explore, Williams rises to thechallenge. The Force must be with John, as EPISODE 1 is a thrilling and lavish score. SKU: 1001747

Masked And Anonymous (Music From The Motion Picture)
Bob Dylan's Band: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Charlie Dixon, Larry Campbell (guitar, background vocals); Tony Garnier (bass); George Recile (drums). Includes liner notes by Alan Light. The soundtrack to the 2003 film starring and co-written by Bob Dylan obviously centers around the legendary songwriter's compositions, but with a twist. The bulk of the selections here are Dylan tunes performed by other artists, some being international performers who've translated the lyrics into their native tongues. To hear a Japanese version of "My Back Pages" by the Magokoro Brothers, or an Italian-language take on the BLOODON THE TRACKS ballad "If You See Her, Say Hello" is to enter into a delightfully surreal and entertaining world. There's also a batch of Dylan performances that were captured live on a soundstage specifically for the movie. The bluesy, apocalyptic "Down in the Flood," the folk song "Diamond Joe," a straightforward version of the old warhorse "Dixie," and an ominous take on TIME OUT OF MIND's "Cold Irons Bound." These cuts capture the raw, rootsy power of Dylan's late-'90s/early-'00s band perfectly, and show that 2003 found him still very much a vital force. SKU: 1086478

Good Stuff
The B-52s: Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider (vocals); Keith Strickland (guitar, keyboards, drum programming). Additional personnel: Pat Irwin (guitar, piano, Hammond organ, keyboards, background vocals); Amy Shulman (harp); David McMurray (flute, saxophone); Stephen "Doc" Kupka (baritone saxophone); Lee Thornberg (trumpet); Richard Hilton (piano, keyboards, Synclavier programming); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Tracy Wormworth, James "Hutch" Hutchinson, Sara Lee, Nicky Brown (bass); Zachery Alford (drums, background vocals); Sterling Campbell, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Kathleen Blihar, Bedarayana Das,Subal Das, Urugaya Das, Bhakta Erick, Monique Francois-Eduoxie, Jane Ivchekno, Caesar Johnston, Ben McLeod, Brad Weinberg, Rukmini Weinberg (Krishna musicians). Engineers include: Tom Durack, Ed Cherney, Rik Pekkonen. Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York; The Power Studio and Skyline Studios, New York, New York; Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California. Following the triumphant COSMIC THING, the B-52s had to contend with the departure of Cindy Wilson. To compensate, they continued to work with producers Don Was and Nile Rogers (why mess with a sure thing?) and brought in many extra players and singers. It says something about Wilson's importance that up to five background singers are utilized on "Tell it Like it T-I-S." In Wilson's absence, Fred Schneider and Kate Pierson come to the fore. GOOD STUFF is a very respectable follow-up. Highlights include the riotous "Hot Pants Explosion" and the enjoyable single "Good Stuff." "Revolution Earth" is a beautiful slow burner with an Indian feel. Schneider abandons his usual style to sing respectably on the disco-flavored "Dreamland." "Is that You Mo-Dean" fills GOOD STUFF's obligatory sci-fi quota and features "The Mo-Dean Intergalactic Choir" on the huge chorus. "The World's Green Laughter" is a rainforest-inspired instrumental. "Vision of a Kiss" evidences a move toward less cynical or humorous love songs. GOOD STUFF is a recommended addition to any B-52s collection. SKU: 5059997

The Doors: Ray Manzarek (vocals, bass, organ); Jim Morrisson (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); John Densmore (drums). Producers: Bruce Botnick, Paul Rothchild, The Doors. Recorded live between August 1969 & July 1970 at various locations on The Doors' United States Tour. Digitally remastered by Paul A. Rothchild, Bruce Botnick and The Doors. ABSOLUTELY LIVE shows off The Doors' strengths as a live band and the way in which they simultaneously challenged their audiences and kept sets interesting by including a broad cross-section of music. Where else could you hear Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" sidling up next to Kurt Weill's "Alabama Song?" ABSOLUTELY LIVE was taped during a United State tour that took place between August 1969 and June 1970 and showed the band to be in peak form. Ray Manzarek's organ and John Densmore's drumming keep pace throughout as Robbie Krieger's guitar playing show him to be as much of a force in the Doors as Morrison. As for the Lizard King, his blues growl is put to perfect use on "Backdoor Man" whereas his inner poet takes over on the prophetic "When The Music's Over"and the jazzy, metaphysical "Universal Mind." Morrison's most dramatic turn comes in the personage of a Southern preacher on the intro "Petition The Lord With Prayer" that leads into a medley of "Dead Cats, Dead Rats" and "Break On Through #2." One More Car One More Rider (Live) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); David Sancious (guitar, keyboards); Andy Fairweather Low (guitar, background vocals); Greg Phillinganes, BillyPreston (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Nathan East (bass, background vocals); Steve Gadd (drums). Recorded live in 2001. When Eric Clapton hit the road in support of 2001's REPTILE, rumors abounded that this would be his last tour. If this hearsay turns out to be true, take consolation in the fact that the live 2-CD ONE MORE CAR, ONE MORE RIDER serves as a nifty souvenir from that particular string of shows. Benefiting from a crystal clear sound mix and a stellar back-up group whose members include keyboardists David Sancious and Billy Preston, Slowhand delivers a heavy mix of his most recent forays into contemporary adult pop and certain classic rock warhorses that would have benefited from early retirement. One result is Clapton doing a fine job wielding an acoustic guitar and shifting gears from laying into the Big Bill Broonzy stomper "Key To The Highway" to making like Gilberto Gil on the bossa-nova flavored instrumental "Reptile." Although the version of "Badge" included here shines and a different arrangement of "Cocaine" breathes some life into this Clapton standard, the umpteenth version of "Layla" would have been better substituted by a more obscure cut off the same album. Otherwise, Clapton's playing remains top-notch and spurs hopes that his days on the road haven't come to an end. SKU: 1077043

30 Years Of Maximum R&B
The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar); Roger Daltrey (vocals); John Entwistle(bass); Keith Moon, Kenney Jones (drums). Recorded between 1964 & 1991. Includes 64-page booklet. The compilers of MAXIMUM R&B deserve credit for squeezing the collected works of the Who onto these four CDs. The Who's transition from singles band to something more ambitious is well chronicled on disc one. It contains early singles like "Zoot Suit" and "I'm the Face," classics like "My Generation" and "I Can't Explain," near-classics like "I'm a Boy" and early rarities like their take on the Stones' "The Last Time." The second disc charts the band's transition toward conceptual rock and opera, beginning with a selection from THE WHO SELL OUT and moving into their seminal rock opera "TOMMY." The band is also captured at their blistering best in cuts from legendary LIVE AT LEEDS. Disc three covers the early '70s, when the band was at a creative peak, turning out state-of-the-art rock with QUADROPHENIA and WHO'S NEXT. Songs like "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" still explode like Thor's hammer. The final disc has a little of everything, rare live versions, radio-only oddities, and the best of their late-'70s and early-'80s output. The later works demonstrate that the Who continued make great music even in the twilight of their career. SKU: 4134709

Silver Thread To Weave, A
Stone Breath promises--and delivers--"100% hand-made music." Pagan acid folk troubadours Timothy Renner (Mourning Cloak) and Prydwyn (Green Crown) follow in the gilded footsteps of Incredible String Band founder Clive Palmer on a miraculous album of deep-forest visions, paeans to nature, and private epiphanies. A SILVER THREAD TO WEAVE THE SEASONS is blessedly out of place and time, ringing with Renner's glittering store of stringed things (banjo, lute, oud, guitar, harp, zither, mandolin, and tarka), bells, hand drums, and Prydwyn's flittering flutes. Renner and Prydwyn's painting box brims with life's most exquisite colors--the honeyed gold of sunlight; the dewy green of new shoots; the brown of freshly plowed earth; the electric blue that arcs between lovers' eyes. The pair pays tribute to Palmer; his solo "Summer's Night" and C.O.B. classic "Evening Air" are reverently interpreted, and Renner's original "Peppermint and Clover Honey" blazes with Palmer-like spirits of love and light. The Third Ear Bandalso receives a nod with a sparkling cover of "Fleance." "The Rainbow-Gilded Leaves of Autumn" and the glorious "Leaves About Our Feet.." echo the brittle beauty of Tom Rapp's Pearls Before Swine, while other tracks evoke the ancient traditions of Celtic folk and India's transcendentalist devotionals. Victim Of Love [Remastered]
After flirting with Philly soul and dance music on THE THOM BELL SESSIONS, Elton John dove headlong into the disco craze with 1979's VICTIM OF LOVE. At the time, John was going through a separation from lyricist Bernie Taupin, resulting in a collaboration with songwriter Pete Bellotte, who co-wrote everything on VICTIM with the exception of an ultra-slick, eight-minute cover of "Johnny B. Goode." Full of seamless rhythms, funk bass and synths that connect the tracks seamlessly together, EJ's songs on this album reflect the influence of disco's peak. Tracks such as "Thunder In The Night" and "Spotlight" fit perfectly into the carefree vibe that was being served up nightly at hotspots like Studio 54. Whereas previous John/Taupin compositions were marked by character-driven stories and complex arrangements, VICTIM OF LOVE was the one Elton John albumwhere the anonymity of the players was paramount and dance was the order of the day. Love Songs
Personnel include: Roy Orbison (vocals, guitar); Harold Bradley, Wayne Moss (guitar); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Dana King (French horn); Floyd Cramer, Marvin Hughes (piano); Bob Moore (bass instrument); Jerry Arnold (drums); The Anita Kerr Singers (background vocals). Producer: Fred Foster Compilation Producer: Nick Shaffran. Liner Note Author: Jonny Whiteside. Recording information: 1960 - 1965. With his geeky, black-rimmed glasses and pasty, pudgy-faced visage, Roy Orbison was never exactly heartthrob material. Nevertheless, his poetic lyrics, quaveringtenor, and impassioned vocal delivery made him one of the most romantic singers in pop history. The Orbison addition to Columbia's LOVE SONGS series is an excellent cross-section of the enigmatic performer's aesthetic, capturing the dreamy, yearning essence of his music perfectly. From the opener, "Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)," the listener is struck by the singer's ability to blend rich melodies, string-sweetened arrangements, and pop hooks in a powerfully effective way. This distinctive style carries through on the building drama of "Running Scared," the misty-eyed fantasy of "Blue Bayou," and the definitive relationship curtain call, "It's Over." Each gem here achieves the dimensions of a mini-epic (particularly the surreal, aching masterpiece "In Dreams") via swelling strings, backing vocals, and escalating dynamics. Through it all is Orbison's superb, reverb-touched voice that virtually drips with love, heartbreak, loneliness, and longing. Orbison's vocals and music are so closely connected to the more tender emotions, if fact, that this well-selected LOVE SONGS--save a couple important omissions (namely "Pretty Woman" and "Crying")--plays like a greatest-hits collection. Personal Mountains
Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano, percussion); Jan Garbarek (soprano & tenor saxophones); Palle Danielsson (acoustic bass); Jon Christensen (drums). Recorded live in Tokyo, Japan in April 1979. Includes liner notes by Peter Ruedi. Released in 1989, 10 years after it was recorded, PERSONAL MOUNTAINS is a set by Keith Jarrett's so-called "European Quartet."It's a live performance in Tokyo, one week prior to the engagement at New York City's Village Vanguard that resulted in the NUDE ANTS album. What's remarkable about both of these releases is how they showcase the power of this ensemble, only briefly glimpsed on the studio albums (as with the wonderful pair, BELONGING and MY SONG). There has always been a folk-like bearing to the quartet's sound, and their studio work underscores this with concise pieces. However, live they stretch out, creating organically changing landscapes which are by turns emotionally compelling, spiritually resonant, and rich with surprise and invention. The aptly titled 15-minute "Personal Mountains," captures the feel of the Scandinavian homeland of Jarrett's cohorts. SKU: 5047321

Mirror Ball
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, electric & acoustic guitars, pump organ); Brendan O'Brien (background vocals, electric guitar, piano). Pearl Jam: Stone Gossard, Mike McCready (electric guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Jack Irons (drums); Eddie Vedder (background vocals). Recorded at Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington on January 26-27 and February 7 & 10, 1995. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. MIRROR BALL was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best RockAlbum. "Peace And Love" was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and "Downtown" was nominated for Best Rock Song. No, THIS is the album on which Neil Young sounds like Neil Young again. Not RAGGED GLORY with its pulverizing guitar catharses--that was the sound of rust waking up--and not SLEEPS WITH ANGELS, which was Neil Young using old tricks to eulogize a new dog. They're both important records, but MIRROR BALL is, plainly, a great one, an album of cosmic brooding and monstrously simple guitar riffs that ranks with his classic '70s discs. Young's band for this unlikely masterpiece is Pearl Jam, who end up sounding less like their accomplished selves than like Young's longtime garage band, Crazy Horse, only denser, because there are more guitars here. Mostly, they bash out supradistorted, plodding power chords, opening up a loud space for Young to bang out his own riffs and solos and croon like a cosmic cowboy. The songs are typical Young epics, with verses so sadly pretty that there's no overriding need to change anything once they get going--quite often, he doesn't. "Act Of Love" is a continuous exchange of two two-chord sections--ABABAB etc.--either of which could make for a classic-rock standard on its own. And the 7-minute long "I'm The Ocean," a manifesto for a wandering poet that pulls in imagery of American Indians, cars and the O.J. trial, goes one simpler, being the same four chords repeated 62 times--no chorus, no bridge, and no call for either. Young and Pearl Jam rock with the excited, can't-stop energy of a first rehearsal take, which some of these tracks may well be--listen to Young call out "let me just play the groove for a minute" at the start of "Downtown." Halfway through the album, Young goes to a pump organ for a haunting, 45-second song about "What Happened Yesterday." Much of what follows sounds like more notes on the death of Kurt Cobain, a journal Young started on SLEEPS WITH ANGELS. "Scenery" is a bitter look at stardom in America, but "Peace And Love," which invokes John Lennon, is a plea to live through this: "Stay for the children/You don't really want to go." It defies the rock aging process that Young, at 49, can still speak in a voice that resonates with Cobain's generation, who could well be his children ("People my age/They don't do the things I do," he notes in "I'm The Ocean"). But he inspired them, and they him, and MIRROR BALL finds him back at his game without having to fit into a new flannel shirt. H SKU: 1001839

Bye Bye Blackbird
Keith Jarrett Trio: Keith Jarrett (piano); Gary Peacock (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums). Recorded at the Power Station, New York, New York on October 12, 1991. This 1991 recording by Keith Jarrett's so-called Standards Trio was recorded less than two weeks after the death of Miles Davis, who's pictured in silhouette on the cover photograph. The choice of material reflects that of Davis, the man to whom this music was recorded in tribute. There are standards (such as the title song), bracing numbers by Davis contemporaries (Thelonious Monk's "Straight No Chaser" and Oliver Nelson's "Butch And Butch"), and eloquently emotive originals. The centerpiece is the extended "For Miles," which, over the course of its 18 minutes, celebrates the darkness and light of Davis's life and death. The fact that Miles Davis could be celebrated on an album that features no trumpet speaks both tothe breadth of Davis's musical reach, as well as the prodigious strengths of these three players. Bummed
Personnel includes: Horseman (banjo); Steve Hopkins (piano); Dave Hassell (percussion). Recorded at The Slaughterhouse, Great Driffield, East Yorkshire, England in August 1988. Raves were the backdrop to life in late '80s Britain and the most prominently featured band on the soundtrack were the Happy Mondays. They crashed onto the scene (six years into their career) with their first album, SQUIRRELAND G-MAN TWENTY FOUR HOUR PARTY PEOPLE PLASTIC FACE CAN'T SMILE (WHITE OUT)-a title which speaks for itself really. BUMMED, the follow-up, produced by the Manchester-based producer Martin Hannett, was a further step in the direction of total Madchester domination. Strangely, however, the Happy Mondays weren't about the feel-good, ecstasy-fueled good times that most associated with the scene at the time. They were the seedy underbelly of the scene--the thugs, if you will. They stole musical ideas from everyone (note: "Lazy Itis" owes a debt to "Ticket to Ride") and singer Shaun Rider alienated everyone by issuing careless, homophobic statements to the press. But for awhile the Mondays were on top. Listen to BUMMED to find out why. SKU: 1000662

Pangaea
PANGAEA was the last album Miles Davis made before his 5 year retirement. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, organ); Sonny Fortune (soprano & alto saxophones, flute); Pete Cosey (synthesizer, electric guitar, percussion); Reggie Lucas (electric guitar); Michael Henderson (electric bass); Al Foster (drums); Mtume (congas, water drums, rhythm box, percussion). Recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on February 1, 1975. Includes liner notes by Kevin Whitehead. The companion set to AGARTHA, PANGAEA presents the Davis band in that evening's concert performance at Osaka Festival Hall on February 1, 1975. The difference in moods is readily apparent, as the band comes out on fire--particularly the trumpeter, who was in a more reticent mood during the afternoon's festivities. With PANGAEA Miles peeks out from the eye of an electronic hurricane to impart the darker side of his soul. Davis was on the verge of a total mental and physical collapse when this concert was recorded, suffering from a variety of degenerative physical ailments, in the throes of a cocaine haze, glaring out at the world from behind the protective darkness of his shades, amidst the grungy blare of his Afro-blue psychobabble. Whether these sounds derive from Davis' malaise or occur in spite of it, it's amusing to recall that this dangerous, relentlessly edgy music was widely held to be proof of Miles' commercial aspirations. Yet only in recent years did Ornette Coleman & Prime Time, The Black Rock Coalition, Living Colour and John Zorn'sNaked City approximate PANGAEA's mysterious power. On side one, some fierce acid funk gives way to an aquatic percussive melange; likewise, side two's lyrical folk themes (as epitomized by Sonny Fortune's lovely flute and Miles' coy wah-wah trumpet) are transformed into a serene, mysterious blues of surprising delicacy. Throughout PANGAEA, guitarist Pete Cosey plays with heroic freedom and epic ferocity over the ritualistic roar of drummer Al Foster, bassist Michael Henderson, and percussionist Mtume. SKU: 5067976

Headquarters
The Monkees: Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork. One of the Monkees' two best albums, HEADQUARTERS is also the one '60s album on which the band played nearly all the instruments, save for a string section and occasional bass from producer Chip Douglas. Since Michael Nesmith had instigated the revolt that led to the band's musical independence, he's in the forefront here, and his songs are uniformly excellent. The banjo-driven "You Told Me" and "Sunny Girlfriend" are two of his best country-influenced tunes, and "You Just May Be the One" is magnificent REVOLVER-influenced psychedelic pop. Douglas' "Forget That Girl" features one of Micky Dolenz's best vocals, andDolenz's own "Randy Scouse Git" is an impressionistic, trippy delight. Perhaps the album's best track is the Davy Jones lead "Early Morning Blues and Greens," a moody slice of atmospheric pop. Even oddities like "Band 6" and "Zilch" are interesting ephemera. This reissue features six interesting alternate takes and demos. SKU: 1001712
