FM (Fantasma Remixes)
FM (FANTASMA MIX) features various artists' remixes of material from the album FANTASMA. FM works as a companion disc to its predecessor CM, and allows the same handful of kindred spirits whose work Cornelius remixed on that project to rework tracks from his Fantasma LP. Like pen pals mailing homemade recordings and 4-track demos back and forth across the pacific, the exchange of remixes allows a sort of dislocated communication between western and Japanese pop, through the limited vocabulary of shared consumer culture. The recurring 'Planet Of The Apes' motif provides the perfect metaphorical umbrella beneath which to undertake this awkwardly touching dialogue. The synthesized Speak n' Spell voice on Damon Albarn's remix of "Star Fruits Surf Rider" spells out: "This is thevoice of the star fruits surf rider/beaming to you from a far off galaxy. I hope everyone on your planet is well and listening to this message. For many years we have been receiving a TV series called Planet Of The Apes. We enjoy this program very much/as on our planet monkeys and apes live in trees/does this mean that you are apes? If so we would like to make contact with the chimpanzee named Cornelius/he seems to like our species and could become our friend. Peace to you all. Goodbye." SKU: 4127124

Live At The Vapors Club
Personnel includes: Jerry Lee Lewis (vocals, piano); Kenneth Lovelace (guitar). Recorded live at Bad Bob's Vapors Club, Memphis, Tennessee on September 29, 1990. Includes liner notes by Dave Travis. On September 29, 1990, Jerry Lee Lewis celebrated his 55th birthday by putting on an amazing live show at Bad Bob's Vapors Club in Memphis, TN. Performing in front of an appreciative hometown crowd, Lewis is in fine form as he powers through raw and rowdy versions of hits like "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Rockin' My Life Away." But it is the incendiary, hyperactive versions of rarely performed songs like "Chantilly Lace" and "Drinkin' Wine and Spo-Dee-O-Dee" that really make this album smoke. Though his voice may have lost some ofthe manic edge that it once possessed, his piano playing is as crazed as ever and Lewis clearly pulls out all the stops the minute he gets behind his piano. Making no effort to cover the false starts, bum notes and Lewis' mischievous mood, LIVE AT THE VAPORS CLUB is an enthralling, unadorned look at a true rock and roll legend in his natural habitat. Dangerous [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Michael Jackson, Heavy D, Christa Larson (vocals); Teddy Riley (guitar, keyboards, synthesizers, drums); Paul Jackson, Jr., Tim Pierce, David Williams, Slash (guitar); Larry Corbett (cello); Jai Winding (piano, keyboards, programming, bass); David Paich (keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Steve Porcaro (keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Rene Moore, Greg Phillinganes (keyboards); Bryan Loren (Moog synthesizer, drums, percussion); Abraham Laboriel (bass); Jeff Porcaro (drums); Wayne Cobham (sequencing, programming); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Siedah Garrett, Shanice Wilson, The John Bahler Singers, The Andrae Crouch Singers (background vocals). Producers: Michael Jackson, Teddy Riley, Bruce Swedien, Bill Bottrell. Engineers include: Bruce Swedien, Teddy Riley, Matt Forger. Principally recorded at Record One Studios & Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic/Sony (45400). Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California). After a lengthy gap of nearly five years, Jackson had to pull something out of the bag. BAD was, after all, a difficult act to follow, and the press were trying to prove he was bonkers. This was a pretty decent attempt and fell in with the hard dance beat of the early 90s. "Heal The World" was much like the old melodic Jackson, and it became a major hit. "Black Or White" was the best of the rest, a well-constructed song in which he attempted to repeat "Ebony And Ivory" in the context of 90sdance music. SKU: 1067373

Way I Feel, The
Solo performer: Remy Shand (vocals, various instruments). THE WAY I FEEL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album. "Take A Message" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance."Rocksteady" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. In contemporary music, timing is crucial. 1996 was a perfect moment for neo-soul artist Maxwell to be hailed as the next Prince, especially at a point when His Royal Badness alienated his most loyal fans with eccentricities. As history would have it, R&B fans, weary of bland beats and stale samples were hungry for something fresh and earthy in 2002. Four years in the making, THE WAY I FEEL is the Motown debut of one twenty-three year old Canadian Remy Shand, and his arrival challenges industry convention in the nick of time. The self-taught singer/songwriter/producer and multi-instrumentalist has effectively culled the sound and feel of classic soul; echoes of Marvin Gayeand Stevie Wonder are paid homage with vintage instrumentation and warm production. From the Memphis vibe of "I Met Your Mercy" to the slow jazz of "Liberate," Shand connects with his influences from the heart. The plinky, imperfectly tuned acoustic piano in "Burnin' Bridges" is just one of countless subtle touches that create a mood devoid of digital sterility. Vocally, Remy Shand glides easily from a Prince-like tenorino to his more natural and comfortable mid-range. Most importantly, THE WAY I FEEL is a study in the virtue of song; a musical art that can be timeless and without boundaries. SKU: 1070887

Lamb's Bread International
Recorded in 1977 & 1978. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The U.K.'s Blood And Fire label is acclaimed for its re-releases of limited edition classic albums, such as the Congos' HEART OFTHE CONGOS, as well as compilations of seminal artists like the great Yabby You and Johnny Clarke. Sometimes, they've also released lesser-known artists whose albums have long been deleted, but are still sought after by fans. Such is the case with Sylford Walker and his celebrated LAMB'S BREAD INTERNATIONAL album, hitherto unavailable for years. Originally produced in 1978-'79 by Glen Brown, the album, finally released a decade later, didn't sell, and Sylford Walker returned to semi-obscurity, though his beautiful ode to marijuana, "Lamb's Bread" became a roots classic. The original Greensleeves album ran just 35 minutes, so Blood And Fire have supplemented some of the cuts with great King Tubby extended dub mixes and added Welton Irie's DJ versions. Walker's dreamy voice, stylistically reminiscent of late 70's Linval Thompson, sounds splendid on tunes like "Cleanliness is Godliness" and "Eternal Day." SKU: 1041995

Warm Nights
With his fourth solo album, WARM NIGHTS, Robert Forster returned to the quirky folk/pop that defined his work with the Go-Betweens. That sound had also been evident on his debut solo album, DANGER IN THE PAST, but the intervening two solo projects had moved away, exploring straight-ahead country originals on one and country-tinged covers on the other. While this might seem something of a regression, in Forster's case, it more resembles a rediscovery, a chance to re-examine the past--it even features literal evidence of this in "Rock 'n Roll Friend," a reworking of an old Go-Betweens track. The album is also marked (in a positive way), by the appearance of former labelmate (on the legendary Postcard label) Edwyn Collins, then still riding on the fluky, but wholly deserved, U.S. success of his GORGEOUS GEORGE record. Collins' influence is clearly evident on several tracks, most notably the R&B flavored "Jug of Wine." Other standouts include the melancholy "Snake Skin Lady," which lyrically addresses the memory of a fan from the heyday of the Go-Betweens, and the Kurt Weil-like "Fortress," which adds a tuba to Forster's repertoire. Highly recommended for fans,WARM NIGHTS also makes a good introduction to Robert Forster. SKU: 4122635

Led Zeppelin II
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic, electric & pedal steel guitar, background vocals); John Paul Jones (organ, bass, background vocals); JohnBonham (drums, tympani, background vocals). Engineers include: George Chkiantz, Andrew Johns, Chris Huston. Recorded in London, England and New York, New York in 1969. From the first grinding notes of the famous vamp that introduces "Whole Lotta Love," LED ZEPPELIN II announces for all to hear that they are the definitive hard rock band of their generation. But before the listener can even settle into the groove, things takes a hard left turn into a spacey new rhythm, exotically flavored by Page's droning feedback and innovative use of a violin bow. By tune's end, Zeppelin has repeatedly toyed with the listener's expectations. This subversive quality distinguishes most of the arrangements on LED ZEPPELIN II, as in the soft/hard dynamic shifts of "What Is And What Should Never Be," the gospelish mood of "Thank You," the rocking vamps and funk rhythms of "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid," and the country music echoes of "Ramble On." And in their appropriations of source materials from Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, and Sonny Boy Williamson, Page and company continued to mine the rich vein of the blues. SKU: 1002920

Pick A Dub
Personnel: Keith Hudson (vocals); Earl "Chinna" Smith (guitar); Augustus Pablo (melodica); Aston Barrett (bass); Carlton Barrett (drums); The Soul Syndicate. Recorded at Harry J Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Dennis Alcapone and Steve Barrow. Keith Hudson was one of the earliest dub artists from Jamaica. Dub is one of the offshoots of reggae, where a producer virtually recreates a song by using a studio mixing board to boost the bass and drums WAY up, and turning the song inside-out until all that remains are some snatches of vocal melody. Aside from his dub explorations, Hudson produced many of the greatest artists of reggae, among them Augustus Pablo, Delroy Wilson, U Roy, and Big Youth. PICK A DUB is a re-release of Hudson's dub recordings (from 1974), which feature the haunting melodica of Pablo and the bass and drums of Aston and Carlton Barrett. Compared to his peers King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry, Hudson's style of dub is much more earthy and heavily rhythmic, focusing more on the actual sounds of guitar, bass, and drums than on adding sound effects. While not quite as otherworldly sounding as Perry or Glen Brown, Hudson made dub that was powerful and even more direct and immediate. Dub fans (casual or obsessive) rejoice! SKU: 1007445

New Skin For The Old Ceremony
Personnel: Leonard Cohen (vocals, guitar, Jew's harp); Janis Ian, Emily Bindiger, Erin Dickins, Gail Kantor (vocals); Jeff Layton (guitar, banjo, mandolin, trumpet); Ralph Gibson (guitar); Lewis Furey (viola); John Lissauer (woodwinds, keyboards, background vocals); Gerald Chamberlain (trombone); John Miller, Don Payne (bass); Barry Lazarowitz (drums, percussion); Roy Markowitz (drums); Armen Halburian (percussion). Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York). Though it's the least acclaimed of Cohen's early albums, NEW SKIN is one of his best, easily the equal of its three predecessors. It's much more ambitious than Cohen's previous efforts in terms of songwriting, but the production is nevertheless understated and tasteful. The urgent delivery and rhythmic drive of "Lover Lover Lover" and "There is a War" makes it seem like the young David Byrne spent as much time absorbing Cohen as he did Jonathan Richman. Ever the rake, Cohen makes a sly romantic appeal to an objet d'amour on the low-key, dixieland jazz-inflected "Why Don't You Try." NEW SKIN is full of emotionally harrowing moments. On "Is This What You Wanted," Cohen is haunted by the ghost of a relationship that may not even be over yet. "A Singer Must Die" finds him taken to task by the world at large (and himself) for some imagined treason intrinsicto his chosen profession. As effective as they are, these tumultuous scenarios are wisely offset by the black humor of the aforementioned "Why Don't You Try" and the over-the-top "Leaving Greensleeves." SKU: 1005514

Cracked Rear View
Hootie & The Blowfish: Mark Bryan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, piano, percussion); Darius Rucker (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion); Dean Felber (vocals, piano, Clavinet, bass); Jim "Soni" Sonefeld (vocals, piano, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Lili Haydn (violin); John Nau (piano, Hammond B-3 organ). Recorded at N.R.G. Recording Services, North Hollywood, California. Hootie & The Blowfish won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and "Let Her Cry" won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Hootie & The Blowfish are a powerhouse regional band exploding upon the charts with a musical point of view born of the "New South" stylings originally pioneeredmusically (and socially) by the Allman Brothers. Comprised of four University of South Carolina graduates, Hootie & The Blowfish began as a classic rock/R.E.M. cover band, but polished an original sound through persistent East Coast tours, and developed a fanatical regional following with their 1993 indy release KOOCHYPOP. Hootie & The Blowfish draw upon a wide range of themes and styles on CRACKED REAR VIEW. "Drowning" is a fervent tale of forbidden romance, colored by the pressures of ignorance and racism. "Time" begins with a simple folkish dignity and Byrds-like guitar harmonies, before revving up to full poetic ambivalence ("Time, you ain't no friend of mine...Time, why do you punish me"). The opening cuts "Hannah Jane," "Hold My Hand" and "Let Her Cry" are hook-happy AOR fare; poignant, tender love songs with an edgy, lyric undercurrent of loneliness and longing, driven forward by Darius Rucker's soulful, preaching vocals. With CRACKED REAR VIEW, Hootie & The Blowfish have distilled their unique brand of Southern rock & soul into a driving pop sound, marked by an insistent rhythm groove, shimmering, soaring guitar work, and sweet country/R&B-styled vocal harmonies. Live At The Apollo Vol.1
The James Brown Band: James Brown (vocals); Lucas "Fats" Gonder (spoken vocals, organ); Les Buie (guitar); Al "Brisco" Clark (tenor & baritone saxophones); St. Clair Pinckney, Clifford "Ace King" MacMillan (tenor saxophone); Louis Hamblin, Teddy Washington, Mack Johnson (trumpet); Dickie Wells (trombone); Hubert Perry (bass); Clayton Fillyau, Sam Lathan (drums). The Famous Flames: Bobby Byrd (organ, background vocals); Bobby Bennett, "Baby" Lloyd Stallworth (background vocals). Reissue producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded live at the Apollo Theater, New York, New York on October 24, 1962. Includes liner notes by Harry Weinger and original release liner notes by Hal Neely. Many albums are hyped as legendary; few deserve the accolade. LIVE AT THE APOLLO 1962 is one of those rare albums that live up to the hype. Released despite label misgivings, LIVE AT THE APOLLO cemented James Brown's reputation as the unchallenged master of soul music. Deejays played the entire album at one stretch--this in an era when radio programmers rejected four-minute singles because they were too long--and the record reached number 2 on the Billboard pop chart, a previously unheard-of achievement for a gritty R&B album. LIVE AT THE APOLLO is more than a pop phenomenon, however; it is a document of one of America's greatest performers at the peak of his artistic powers. Brown's singing is orgasmic--just listen to the opening squeal on "I Go Crazy"--and the intensity never lets up. Brown drives his crack band through breakneck versions of early hits before dragging them through the eleven-minute bump-and-grind of "LostSomeone," the high point of a show that is nothing but high points. Nearly 30 years later, this is still one of the greatest live albums of all-time. SKU: 1000483

Heads High
Producers include: Steely & Clevie, Shane Richards, Danny Brownie, D. Juvenile, Donovan Germain. Mr. Vegas, born Clifford Smith, was once a smooth-voiced singer known in Jamaica for his sweet tone. However, a fightone night at a recording studio--over the ownership of a DAT tape--resulted in Smith's jaw being broken with an iron pipe. After a few weeks in the hospital with his jaw wired shut, he ordered the wiring removed and came back with a new vocal style combining rap with singing. HEADS HIGH is a typical dancehall album in the sense that lyrically, it is mostly concerned with women, braggadocio, and "cabin stabbin." However, HEADS HIGH is an interesting album. Mr. Vegas's vocal style is not only well suited to the genre but has a distinctive tone all its own, which Mr. Vegas creates by semi-singing his raps. The beats are well done and quite varied across the 20 tracks. This album's title track was a huge hit, holding at No. 1 on the U.K. charts for 10 weeks and becoming a staple in any hip-hop DJ's reggae sets. Mr. Vegas was nominated as Best International Reggae Act for England's 1998 MOBO awards. Not bad for a rookie effort. SKU: 5071190

Leaving Through The Window
Something Corporate includes: Andrew McMahon (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Josh Partington, William Tell (guitar, background vocals); Clutch (bass, background vocals); Brian Ireland (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Paul Buckmaster (arranger, conductor). Engineers include: Jim Wirt, Mike Fraser, Brian Reeves. Recorded at Cello, Hollywood, California; 4th Street, Santa Monica, California; South Beach, Miami,Florida; Jungle Room Studio, Glendale, California. At heart, Something Corporate find themselves somewhere between the quirky, piano-driven sound of Ben Folds Five and the power pop angst of Marvelous 3 and Semisonic. The bittersweet mid-tempo "Cavanaugh Park" boasts lush, dramatic keyboards, setting a vibe that is almost at odds with the lyrics. "Punk Rock Princess" is as catchy as the song's name would suggest, while the bratty, self-proclaimed anthem "If You C Jordan" sounds like a second cousin to much contemporaneous neo-pop-punk music. Staying corporate, "Drunk Girl" opens with Boston-influenced guitar harmonies that lead to the most endearing sentiment on LEAVING THROUGH THE WINDOW. The song finds a man in a dubious situation, but virtue keeps him from betraying his heart; not something corporate, but something refreshing. SKU: 1075114
