10 [PA]
Available on cassette on Def Jam (063219). NOTES: Personnel includes: LL Cool J, P. Diddy, Usher, K-Ci & Jo-Jo, Amerie, Jennifer Lopez. Producers include: DJ S&S, Tone & Poke, Richie Nice, The Neptunes, Zukhan. LLCool J's tenth album for Def Jam, the label he helped to create, is as you'd expect something of a triumphant affair. The rapper's long career (his first hit was in 1985) and extensive experience have earned him a unique place as something of an elder statesman in an industry where careers are often literally short-lived. He's based his on a singular reliance on smart rapping and tightly arranged material, not just beats overlaid with scrappy keyboard figures. Thus 10's first impression is of a fully realized, expansively conceived project. Of course, a rapper can never go far wrong shouting out to his home turf. With nods to Queens and Brooklyn on "Fa Ha," and "Niggy Nuts" LL Cool J proves (as if proof were needed) that despite his extensive success, his heart has never strayed far from home, despite the exotic lifestyle he depicts in "Amazin'." Two obvious conclusions to draw from the material on offer here: the star remains a little in awe of his success, and he's done more with that success and with his chosen genre than quite a few of his contemporaries. Young Man Blues (Live In Glasgow)
A staggering find for British folk fanatics, the 30 tracks on YOUNG MAN BLUES were recorded in various clubs and coffeehouses in Bert Jansch's hometown of Glasgow between 1962 to 1964-prior to the release of hisself-titled debut. These songs show that Jansch's remarkable guitar technique was already in full bloom, as evidenced by the early rendition of Davey Graham's classic "Angi." Elsewhere, Jansch focuses on well-known folk and blues standards, including "Hallelujah I Loved Her So" and "Stagolee." The opening "Theme To West Side Story" speaks for a puckish sense of humor. The recordings are of variable but overall surprisingly good quality, and the nicely packaged set features extensive notes and a number of rare photos from this formative period of Jansch's musical career. Wishes
Personnel: Kenny G (arranger, soprano & tenor saxophone); William Ross, Jorge Calandrelli (conductor); Ramon Stagnaro (nylon string guitar); Randy Waldman (piano); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, programming); Greg Phillinganes (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Paulinho Da costa (percussion); Josh Blinder, Greg Bleck, Robert Conley (programming). Producers: Kenny G, Dave Foxx, Lou Simon. Pop instrumentalist Kenny G. has a thing for seasonal music. WISHES: A HOLIDAY ALBUM, is G's third collection of holiday music and follows on the heels of MIRACLES and FAITH. Delivering the kind of lighter-than-air tone and arrangements that allowed this soprano saxophonist to dominate the world, this Seattle native treats these 10 perennials with great care. The album draws primarily from the most traditional corners of holiday music, and gorgeous versions of "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring," "Joy To The World" and the lush melody of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing/O ComeAll Ye Faithful" are sure to put the Christmas spirit into even the heart of The Grinch. Kids get served a jaunty medley of "Rudolph The Rednose Reindeer/Frosty The Snowman" and nobody ends up going home with coal in their stockings. SKU: 1077799

Murderers
The Murderers: Ja Rule, Black Child, Tah Murdah, Vita, O1. Additional personnel includes: DMX, Memphis Bleek, Jay Z, Dave Bing, Chris Black, Ronnie Bumps, Shady, Busta Rhymes; Tai (various instruments); Steve Hunter (guitar); Mr. Fingaz (organ); Carl "Butch" Small (percussion); Lil' Rob (programming). Producers: Irv Gotti, Lil' Rob, Dat Nigga Reb, Mr. Fingaz, Da Mizza. Engineers include: Carlisle Young, Pat Viala, Rich Keller. Irv Gotti, who was responsible for the signing of DMX, introduces The Murderers, a hard-hitting five-member crew who spit Mafia-inspired vocals over murderous beats. IRV GOTTI PRESENTS THE MURDERERS is aggressive East Coast gangsta rap. With songs like "We Don't Give a Fuck" and "Murderers," the group continues a ritualized antagonistic hip-hop convention. However, songs like "Black And White," where Black Child flips a racial issue, and Vita's solo effort "Vita, Vita, Vita," where the only female in the organization getsto shine, show the Murderers' diversity. Though their genre of hip-hop may sound a little archaic to some, The Murderers balance this with some bangin' cuts. SKU: 1030058

Super Sexy Swingin'
Most of the songs on SUPERSEXY SWINGIN' SOUNDS are the same songs that first appeared on ASTRO-CREEP 2000, remixed by Charlie Clouser, John Fryer, The Dust Brothers, Mike "Hitman" Wilson, P.M. Dawn and The Damage Twins. White Zombie: Rob Zombie (vocals); J (guitar); Sean Yseult (bass); John Tempesta (drums). Additional personnelincludes: Machine, Brian Tucker (programming); Dave Rockin' Duke. Recorded in Paris, France; London, England; Rome, Italy. These remixes of songs from ASTRO-CREEP: 2000 lend a new, ultra-cool ambience to White Zombie's hard-hitting trash-pop songs. Among those doing the remixing are the Dust Brothers and P.M. Dawn. Their remixes give some of these songs an intergalactic feel, with ambient electronic layers and deep techno beats. On other tracks, drum loops, samples and scratches are injected, resulting in a swank hip-hop groove. But even with the intrusion of new sounds, the signature White Zombie amalgamation of metal, dance and trailer-park kitsch remains intact--these mixes simply spice up the original ingredients. As a bonus, SUPERSEXY SWINGIN' SOUNDS also includes a cover of KC & The Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogie Man." SKU: 1000995

Personnel: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar, piano); John McFee (guitar, pedal steel); Alex Call (guitar); Sean Hopper (piano, organ, background vocals); Steve Nieve (piano, organ); Nick Lowe (piano, bass, background vocals); Stan Shaw (organ); John Ciambotti (bass, background vocals); Bruce Thomas, Andrew Bodnar (bass); Michael Shine, Steve Goulding, Malcolm Dennis, Ian Powling (drums); Dickie Faulkner (percussion). Recorded at Pathway Studios, Islington, United Kingdom from 1976 to 1977. Originally released on Stiff (UK SEEZ 3)/Columbia (US 35037). Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. Singer/songwriter Declan MacManus'debut album sported the stage name his manager gave him: Elvis Costello. Recorded in London with an expatriate American band called Clover, MY AIM IS TRUE demonstrated Costello's gift for bitter wordplay. The first single was "Less Than Zero" (an attack on the fascist leader Oswald Mosley and his popularity in England), and subsequent singles ("[The Angels Want To Wear My] Red Shoes" and "Alison") became hits in the U.K. Upon the album's release in America, critics praised Costello as the finest songwriter in the New Wave/punk movement. Bring On The Night [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Sting (vocals, guitar); Branford Marsalis (soprano & tenor saxophones); Kenny Kirkland (piano, keyboards); Darrel Jones(bass); Omar Hakim (drums); Dolette McDonald (background vocals). Engineers include: Gerd Rauttenbach, Peter Brandt, Kim Turner. Recorded live in 1985. Viewers understandably traumatized by the birth scene in "Bring On The Night," director Michael Apted's documentary on Sting's first post-Police band, were doubtless relieved to learn that the album of the same name was not the movie soundtrack. Instead, it is an extremely well done concert set taken from Sting's 1985 European tour. The band, featuring Branford Marsalis on sax, moves through a nice selection of Police tunes and songs from Sting's solo debut DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES. Though nothing here eclipses the studio versions, it's all eminently listenable and is distinguished by outstanding musicianship throughout. SKU: 4126293

Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, piano, harpsichord, organ, clavioline, Mellotron, maracas, tambourine, tape loops); George Harrison (vocals, guitar, violin, harmonica, Hammond organ, timpani, congas, firebell, tambourine, tabla); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, flute, recorder, piano, acoustic & electric basses, bongos, congas); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, maracas, tambourine, finger cymbals, tape loops). Additional personnel includes: Dave Mason (piccolo, trumpet); Philip Jones (trumpet); George Martin (piano); Mal Evans (tambourine); Mick Jagger, Gary Leeds, Keith Richards, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Asher, Patti Harrison, Keith Moon, Graham Nash (background vocals). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Olympic Sound Studios, De Lane Lea and Chappell Recording Studios, London, England between November 24, 1966 and November 7, 1967. The first six songs on MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR were the soundtrack to the Beatles' TV movie of the same name. The film was an experimental mess, but the experimental pop of the albumincluded some of their most memorable productions. The soundtrack side was dominated by Paul McCartney pop tunes, including the bittersweet piano ballad "Fool On The Hill" and "Your Mother Should Know," an impossibly catchy bit of Vaudevillian pop. But it also featured George Harrison's mystical "Blue Jay Way" (about his house in Hollywood) and John Lennon's "I Am The Walrus," which wedded a stream-of-consciousness lyric to a fierce drum beat, layers of strings, odd voices and some dialogue from Shakespeare's "King Lear." McCartney's "Hello Goodbye," which led off the assorted singles, featured some neatly arranged contrapuntal vocals, and may well have been about the dissolving partnerships (songwriting and otherwise) between McCartney and Lennon. Lennon's strangely arranged "Strawberry Fields Forever," whose two halves blend different takes of the same song, one slowed down to match the pitch of the other, was a trippy reverie; its bridges, orchestrated with horns, cellos, and backward cymbals, are sheer brilliance. "Penny Lane," a wistful fantasy featuring a beautiful trumpet solo, was McCartney at his melodic best, the AM foil to Lennon's FM headiness. SKU: 1003292

Elv1s - 30 No.1 Hits
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals); Gordon Stoker, Ben Speer, Brock Speer, Rad Robinson, Jon Dodson, Charles Prescott, Millie Kirham, Sherrill Nelson, Kathy Westmoreland, Myrna Smith; The Jordanaires; The Surfers; The Sweet Inspirations; The Imperials; J.D. Sumner & The Stamps. Producers include: Steve Sholes, Chet Atkins, Chips Moman, Felton Jarvis, Elvis Presley. Compilation producer: David Bendeth. Includes liner notes Peter Guralnick and Ernst Mikael Jorgensen. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, 30 #1 HITS presents a career-spanning serving of the King's chart-toppers. Dating back to "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was inspired by a suicide note printed in the Miami Herald), most of these cuts have become indelibly etched into the fabric of pop culture and each has a unique story behind it. "Love Me Tender" has its origins in the CivilWar ballad "Aura Lee," "It's Now Or Never" found Elvis Americanizing the Neapolitan ballad "O Sole Mio," and "Wooden Heart" likewise was converted from a German children's song. This Memphis native's choice of artists to cover was equally intriguing and includes Hollywood legend Al Jolson ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?"), New Orleans soul shouter Smiley Lewis ("One Night"), blues great Big Mama Thornton ("Hound Dog"), and country titan Hank Snow ("[Now And Then There's] A Fool Such As I"). Further testimony of Presley's long-lasting appeal is the inclusion of the JXL Radio Edit Remix of "A Little Less Conversation," a UK #1 that not only enabled Elvis to have more chart-toppers than The Beatles, but also became a hit in a number of other countries including the United States. Meteora [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include behind-the-scenes video footage, a screensaver, and weblinks. Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda (vocals, emcee, samples); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, background vocals); Phoenix (bass, background vocals); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (turntables, samples, background vocals). Additional personnel: Joel Derouin, Charlie Bisharat, Alyssa Park, Sara Parkins, Michelle Richards, Mark Robertson (violin); Evan Wilson, Bob Becker (viola); Larry Corbett, Dan Smith (cello); David Zasloff (Shakuhachi flute). Recorded at NRG Studios, North Hollywood, California. In one of the most highly anticipated follow-ups of recent years, Linkin Park maintains its position at the top of the nu-metal heap with METEORA. The band labored carefully over their craft; for instance, the writing process of leadoff single "Somewhere I Belong" spawned 30 finished choruses beforevocalists Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington arrived at the version found on the album. The combination of Shinoda's raps and Bennington's sing/scream vocals makes for an altogether complementary approach, best evidenced in "Faint" and "Easier To Run." The pressure felt by Linkin Park to meet a high standard with their sophomore release even finds it's way into the lyrics of "Nobody's Listening," where self-doubt and fear are almost all-consuming. Producer Don Gilmore (Apex Theory, Blind Tribe) mans the boards with a decisive lean towards acoustic drums. That is not to say by any means that Linkin Park's inventive use of samples and turntables is any less present or crucial to the group's now-signature sound. SKU: 1081309

Forever Blue
Personnel: Chris Isaak (vocals, guitar); Jimmy Pugh (Hammond B-3 organ); Rowland Salley (bass, vocals); Kenney Dale Johnson (drums, vocals); Gregg Arreguin, Frank Martin, Jason Morgan, David Grissom, Bruce Kaphan. All songs written by Chris Isaak. FOREVER BLUE was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Somebody's Crying" was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. What most people remember about Chris Isaak's infamous video for the 1989 single "Wicked Game" is that he gets the beautiful woman. That's because most people weren't listening. Chris Isaak's entire oeuvre is about losing beautiful women, and he has lost them with a heart-rending relentlessness that makes Roy Orbison seem like a romantic success in comparison. The remarkable FOREVER BLUE, his fifth album, was written after a personal event that Isaak says"wasn't actually like a break up. It was like an explosion." For someone who seems to almost cultivate romantic depression, that must have been nothing short of inspirational, and on FOREVER BLUE he turns the resulting emotions (sadness, bitterness, loneliness) into a sustained thesis on the wicked game of love. The growling, swamp-blues opener "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing" portrays true love as a knife, a thing that hurts more and more the deeper it goes. It begins with the question "You ever love someone so much you thought your little heart was gonna break in two?" Isaak obviously has, and he seems to relish the inevitable hurt, as if the pain fuels his engine. With reverb-drenched guitars and trembling organs setting a plaintive mood that you might call high lonesome rockabilly, Isaak sings about it in low, sexy whispers and high, wailing cries, sometimes within the same line. "No reason left for living," he sighs in the young-Elvis-like title-ballad, and then he remembers one--"new tears to cry." In the disarmingly peppy "I Believe," he professes his belief in "lovers walking side by side" and "a beautiful day." But, of course, there's a punchline: "not for me/And not for you." That's because you walked into his world, and he's going to pull you under, too. SKU: 1003157

Both Sides
Solo performer: Phil Collins (vocals, various instruments). Includes liner notes by Phil Collins. BOTH SIDES was recorded at Phil Collins' 12-track home studio. All four of Phil Collins' '80s albums wereenormous commercial successes, with a plethora of hit singles and videos. However, by 1993, when his first post-Genesis solo album, BOTH SIDES, was released, there had been a few major shifts in popular music, and it was the first of Collins' solo records not to see much in the way of chart action. This was not unexpected, but it's rather a shame, since the album continues the more mature, low-key sound first developed on 1993's BUT SERIOUSLY. Less somber than that album but still maintaining its quiet grace, BOTH SIDES is filled with solidly composed, well-played (Collins plays all the instruments, for the first time since 1981's FACE VALUE), and melodically rich songs. Collins' lyrics delve further into the social commentary arena than even those on BUT SERIOUSLY, and perhaps it's the relative lack of characteristic love songs that accounted for the album's lack of commercial success, but this is an album which deserved better than it got. Eat 'em And Smile
Personnel: David Lee Roth (vocals); Steve Vai (guitar); The Sidney Sharp Strings (strings); Jesse Harms (electric piano, keyboards); Jeff Bova (synthesizer); Billy Sheehan (bass, background vocals); Greg Bissonette (drums, background vocals); Sammy Figueroa (percussion); Waters Family (background vocals). Engineers: Jeff Hendrickson, Lee Herschberg. Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York, Can-Am Recorders, Tarzana, California and Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. After David Lee Roth's shocking split from Van Halen at the height of the group's popularity, all parties involved resorted to a media-fueled circus of mudslinging. Roth's first post-V.H. project was to be a motion picture (CRAZY FROM THE HEAT) which never got off the ground. But Roth had already assembled a killer solo band, including ex-Frank Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, ex-Talas bassist Billy Sheehan, and ex-Maynard Ferguson drummer Gregg Bissonette, to record songs for the movie's soundtrack. Instead of scrapping the tracks, he incorporated them into his first solo album, 1986's EAT 'EM AND SMILE. SMILE remains Roth's best solo work. His hard-rocking band sounds as if it's out for blood throughout. Highlights abound, such as the popular singles/videos "Yankee Rose" and "Goin' Crazy," and shredders like "Shy Boy," "Elephant Gun," "Bump and Grind," "Big Trouble," and a cover of "Tobacco Road." To make things even more interesting, Van Halen issued its first post-Roth album, 5150 (with Sammy Hagar taking Roth's vocalspot), just as Roth was releasing EAT 'EM AND SMILE. The two camps' press squabbles spilled over into the charts. Roth and Van Halen slugged it out, and both albums proved to be big sellers. SKU: 1006765

Greatest Hits Vol.1
Personnel includes: Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Ed Black (guitar, steel guitar); Kenny Edwards (guitar, bass); Danny Kortchmar, Richard Bowden, Pete Wade, Al Viola (guitar); David Lindley (fiddle); Jim Fadden (harmonica); Jim Gordon, Nino Tempo (saxophone); Mac Johnson, Darrel Leonard (trumpet); Spooner Oldham (piano); John Boylen (electric piano); Kenny Anderson, Mike Bowden (bass); Micky McGee, Dennis St. John, Andrew Gold, David Kemper (drums); Andrew Gold, John David Souther, Chris Ethridge, Waddy Wachtel, Bernie Leadon, Sneaky Pete, Russ Kunkel, Clydie King, Herb Pedersen (background vocals). Producers: Peter Asher, John David Souther, John Boylan, Elliot F. Mazer, Nikolas Venet. Engineers include: Val Garay, John Haeny, Elliot F. Mazer. Remastered by Steve Hoffman (July 1993). Unlike the crop of West Coast artists with whom she was associated (e.g., the Eagles, Jackson Browne), Linda Ronstadt is a singer, pure and simple. Her extraordinary, clarion voice enabled her to distinguish herself as an interpreter of other people's songs in an era that prizedthe singer/songwriter. Whether she sang country, straight-ahead pop, '50s rockers, or even soul, the results were contagious. This package provides the essentials from the Golden Age of Ronstadt, the early- to mid-'70s, when she ruled the radio. All her major chart hits are here, from "Different Drum" with her pre-solo-career group, the Stone Poneys, to the country-rock of "Desperado" to her sprightly renditions of hits by Buddy Holly (That'll Be the Day") and the Everly Brothers ("When Will I Be Loved.") She belts her way through the soul classic "Heat Wave," and turns in an aching cover of Smoky Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears" that does ample justice to that poignant ballad. "You're No Good," perhaps her signature song of the era, captures all of the things that characterize her work: a strong melody, imaginative arrangement and crisp production, all carried by that inimitable voice.
