Perverted By Language
This 1998 reissue contains bonus tracks. The Fall: Brixe Smith, Craig Sanlon (vocals, guitar); Mark E. Smith (vocals, violin, piano); Karl Burns (bass, drums); Steve Hanley (bass); Paul Hanley (drums). Recorded at Pluto, Manchester. Includes liner notes by Nick Church. Fall leader Mark E. Smith had never been satisfied with the sound of 1983's PERVERTED BY LANGUAGE, so this CD release has been completely remixed. This is not only The Fall's best-sounding album-it may well be the group's best album, period. PERVERTED BY LANGUAGE is an important record in The Fall's long and prolific career, as it begins a six-year stretch during which the band released one excellent album after another--each filled with such intelligent, knotty, and increasinglypop-oriented songs as LANGUAGE's "Eat Y'self Fitter," "Smile," and "I Feel Voxish." LANGUAGE is also the first album to feature Smith's then-wife Brix on guitar. The CD includes five tracks previously available only on singles, including 1982's amazing "Kicker Conspiracy," a funny and appealing song about football. SKU: 1008522

Out There
Love includes: Arthur Lee. Includes liner notes by Andrew Sandoval and Arthur Lee. The first incarnation of Love collapsed at the completion of FOREVER CHANGES. Arthur Lee assembled a new line-up, which brought forth first FOUR SAIL. Departing from Elektra, the label with which they'd started, Love released the two-record set, OUT HERE. Now retitled OUT THERE, it includes all of its original tracks, along with three additional numbers pulled from the band's final release, FALSE START. Love's fifth album in only three years was misunderstood when it appeared in 1969, and can now be heard on its own, without the expectations that had been set up by the band's prior work. "I'll Pray For You" has a sassy rock & roll exuberance that harks back to their debut, while the melodicism of "Listen To My Song" sounds like FOREVER CHANGES sans orchestration. Among the additional tracks is the exciting Jimi Hendrix collaboration, "The Everlasting First," which was the clear high point of thealbum from which it was culled. SKU: 1008307

Days Of Wine And Roses, The [Remastered]
Dream Syndicateincludes: Steve Wynn (vocals, guitar); Kendra Smith (vocals, bass); Karl Precoda (guitar); Dennis Duck (drums); Carolyn O'Rourke, Erik Landers. Recorded at Quad Teck Studio, Los Angeles, California in September 1982. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This Davis, California quartet's full-length debut stands alongside such classics as R.E.M.'s CHRONIC TOWN and the Replacements' HOOTENANNY in proving there was more to early '80s music than MTV-ready synthpop. Regularly compared to the first Velvet Underground album on its release, the only points of similarity between the two are in guitarist Karl Precoda's liberal use of feedback, and bassist Kendra Smith's deadpan Nico-like vocal on the coolly dismissive "Too Little Too Late." Lou Reed has never sounded anywhere near as crazed as Steve Wynn does on the manic title track, and the sneering opener "Tell Me When It's Over" owes more to Dylan's "Positively Fourth Street" than it does to "Heroin." This is one of the classic American pop albums of the '80s. SKU: 1062080

Shangri-La
Personnel: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Richard Bennett (guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar); Guy Fletcher (piano, organ); Glenn Worf (bass instrument); Chad Cromwell (drums). Recording information: Shangri-la Studios, Malibu, California. Mark Knopfler's first excursions outside of Dire Straits were film soundtracks, where his guitar mastery served him well. Starting in the mid-1990s, he embarked on a proper post-Straits solo career. By the time of 2004's SHANGRI-LA, Knopfler had almost entirely left behind the expansive instrumental textures of his former band in favor of a more straight-ahead singer/songwriter approach, which works wonderfully here. Knopfler keeps things low-key throughout most of SHANGRI-LA, with quietly intoned, often drolly sardonic lyrics, supple finger-picked guitar lines, and songs full of subtly crafted surprises. There's a wealth of unusual topics on offer here; "Boom, Like That" is a first-person monologue by Knopfler in the voice of Ray Kroc, the man behind the McDonald's fast-food empire. The bluesy "Song for Sonny Liston" chronicles the famed boxer's brushes with the underworld. "Donegan's Gone" laments thepassing of British folk/skiffle pioneer Lonnie Donegan, a key influence on Knopfler and scores of other British rockers. Departing from the more folk-oriented sound of its predecessor, THE RAGPICKER'S DREAM, SHANGRI-LA more fully develops the detail-oriented, irony-laced songwriting style Knopfler first hinted at in Dire Straits tunes like "Money for Nothing." All The Best
2 LPs on 1 CD. The CD booklet includes lyrics and photos. The work of Paul McCartney presents a quandary to the anthologist--on one hand, it's hard to pick a period of his legendary career that didn't produce something which is now ingrained in our global consciousness. On the other, try fitting any of that onto one, two, or ten CD's and calling it "comprehensive." ALL THE BEST does a great job of narrowing down McCartney's post-Beatles hits, presenting an album of, as the name implies, some of his finest moments, both solo and with Wings. ALL THE BEST concentrates heavily on Wings material--from the opening, multi-part "Band On The Run" and the energetic "Jet" to the closer, RED ROSE SPEEDWAY's airy, romantic classic "My Love." In between, hits like the epic "Live And Let Die" and the relaxed, charming "Let 'Em In" are nestled alongside solo gems (the sprightly "Coming Up") and superstar collaborations (Michael Jackson co-penned "Say Say Say," Stevie Wonder lent his unique voiceto "Ebony And Ivory"). Trio Live
Pat Metheny Trio: Pat Metheny (synthesizer, acoustic, electric, 42-string & 12-string fretless guitars); Larry Grenadier (acoustic bass); Bill Stewart (drums). Recorded live in 1999 and 2000. The live performance is the ideal medium for a talent like PatMetheny, and this double-live set captures the guitar master with his trio over a series of 1999-2000 performances. As a unit, the group has a synergy uncommon among such short-lived ensembles. Their feel for each other's musical communication is at some points uncanny. Metheny in turn is just as accommodating to his partners, happy to play a supporting role when needed. The music covered by the group includes a great deal of Metheny's older material, a few cherished standards, and a handful of recent compositions. Among the Metheny favorites are his early piece "Bright Size Life," the raucous "Question and Answer," and the pastel-hued "Unity Village." It's always a treat to hear players of this caliber wail away at standards, and their reworkings of "Giant Steps" and "All the Things You Are" are highlights. Other stellar performances are the off-kilter burner "Faith Healer," featuring a joyously noisy Metheny, and the swinging "Soul Cowboy." SKU: 1047099

Joe Cocker Live
Personnel includes: Joe Cocker (vocals); Maxine Green, Doreen Chanter (vocals); Phil Grande, Keith Mack, Earl Slick (guitar); Deric Dyer (tenor saxophone, keyboards, percussion); Chris Stainton, Jeff Levine (keyboards); T.M. Stevens (bass, background vocals); Steve Holley (drums); Crystal Taliefero (percussion, background vocals); Tawatha Agee, Vaneese Thomas, Fonzi Thornton (background vocals); The Memphis Horns. Producers: Steve Thompson, Michael Barbiero, Michael Lang. Recorded live at Memorial Auditorium, Lowell, Massachusetts on October 5, 1989. This in-concert album is fleshed out with two studio tracks, including a Wagnerian, overproduced Diane Warren power ballad. Cockerveers effectively between his '80s output and songs he popularized on MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN, his first live album from 1970. (Most of those songs--including "A Little Help From My Friends," Feelin' Alright," and "The Letter"--are served up in note-perfect recreations, although only keyboard player Chris Stainton remains from the 1970 band). In any case, Cocker is in fine voice throughout, particularly on the lung-busting "You Are So Beautiful." Oddly enough, he seems most completely engaged during his take on Randy Newman's wry "Guilty"--apparently the song's theme is something he can relate to. SKU: 5068026

Fusion
As one of the original Frankfurt techno-trance producers, and still something of a legend in the dance community, Sven Vath proudly marches on withhis own style of techno regardless of trends, style changes, markets and ideologies. FUSION seems like a summation of everything he's previously done, but aside from adorning a fairly eclectic album, if anything the title appears more indicative of the paths Vath now chooses to pursue. The title track takes a jazzy TV cop show riff and harnesses it to a dyspeptic electro/hip-hop rhythm, while the following "Discophon" marries Vath's penchant for weird electronic sounds to a deep bassline and galloping beat-funk. Elsewhere, it's apparent Vath's been checking out the Chain Reaction contingent ("Augenblick," with its subtle minimal techno-dub vibes), and he has yet to forget his trance roots ("Scorpio's Movement"), while on tracks such as "Trippy Moonshine," strangely processed tribal beats clash amongst Orb-like dub and surging synthetic atmospheres. BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar): Gillian Gilbert (keyboards); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums). Recorded live at The Glastonbury Festival on June 19, 1987. Includes liner notes by Paul Lester. Recorded live in England in the summer of 1987, this disc is an uneven hour of New Order music that is redeemed by some brilliantly inspired versions of classic tracks. The album opener, "Touched by the Hand of God," is hampered by a bottom-heavy sound quality that serves the band poorly. The second track, "Temptation," goes a long way to improving things, though. Performed slightly faster than usual with the guitar lines cutting brightly into the melody, it is clearly one of the band's best. The middle of the album, which includes a renamed "Every Little Counts," here called "Every Second Counts," also suffers from poor sound, though there are some interesting alternate lyrics to several well-known tracks. On a 10-minute workout of "Perfect Kiss," things finally begin to get on track, with Peter Hook's bass lines delivered with authority and Bernard Sumner's vocals full of gusto. An excellent "Age of Consent" follows, featuring the whole band playing fast and sloppy, clearly enjoying itself. Ending on a high note, a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" builds over nearly nine minutes, accelerating into a crunch of samples that really shows just how good New Order can be live. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Another in a series of wildly eclectic compilation soundtracks (see THE BIG LEBOWSKI). It's not often that one can sample Bob Dylan, Tom Jones and Perry Como all on one disc.Yet the effect is not all that disparate, thanks in part to the brief spoken excerpts from Hunter Thompson's gonzo screed on which the film is based. Given the drug-drenched nature of the narrative, the selections are skewed to tried-and-true hippie psychedelic classics ( "White Rabbit", "Expecting To Fly"), except for Como's "Magic Moments" and Debbie Reynolds' "Tammy," which veer towards the surreal. Of course, Tom Jones ' "She's A Lady" is a little more appropriate, given the Las Vegas setting. Composers Tomoyasu Hotei and Ray Cooper also provide "A Drug Score," an effective 3-part acid freak jam scattered throughout the disc. The whole goofy trip ends with The Dead Kennedys' thrashing cover of "Viva Las Vegas." Given the proto-punk ethos of Hunter Thompson's writing and its roots in West Coast psychedelia , this surprise appearance by San Francisco's witty homegrown punks makes a twisted kind of sense. Rock 'n' Roll
New York Dolls: David Johansen (vocals, harmonica, gong); Johnny Thunders (vocals, guitar); Sylvain Sylvain (guitar, piano, background vocals); Arthur Kane, Jr. (bass); Jerry Nolan (drums, percussion). Producers: Shadow Morton, Todd Rundgren, Paul Nelson. Compilation producers: Richard Bauer, Bill Levenson, Marty Thau. Recorded at Record Plant Studios, Mediasound Studios and A&R Studios, New York, New York in 1973-74. Includes liner notes by Lenny Kaye. All tracks have been digitally remastered. As the precursors to punk, and an afterthought to the seedy sexuality of the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls linked '60's rock to American punk. Their campiness was appropriated from glam rock, butit was also influenced by a variety of cultural elements. David Johansen's vaudevillian phrasing two-stepped all over the band's material; while lead guitarist Johnny Thunders' screeching leads were urban backdrops, sounding more like sirens and subway cars than rock music. With their plodding, raunchy, rhythm anchor of bassist Artur Kane, Jr. and drummer Jerry Nolan, The Dolls affirmed that rock's primal three-chord foundation didn't end in the '60's. ROCK 'N ROLL captures the Dolls in all their ragged glory. By their choice of covers--"The Courageous Cat Theme," the Cadets' "Stranded In The Jungle," and the use of a well-known Shangri-Las lyric--the group displayed their all-consuming love for rock 'n' roll, while originals like "Trash," "Bad Girl" and "Subway Train" elevated urban teen anthems of a street-corner doo-wop and girl-group aesthetic into a durably rocking byproduct. Philophobia
Arab Strap: Aidan Moffat, Malcolm Middleton. Additional personnel: Adele Bethel (vocals); Sarah Martin (violin); Cora Bissett, Alan Barr (cello); Alan Wylie (trumpet); Chris Geddes (Wurlitzer, Hammond B-3 organ); Stuart Murdoch (piano); David Gow (organ, drums); Gary Miller (bass). Arab Strap is similar to Nick Cave or Tindersticks in its timbre and its taste for ennui, but lacking in pretension and bombast. These simple and understated pieces are like the soundtrack from an endless rainy afternoon, and even when the guitars rise up and roar (as in the head-nodding groove of "New Birds")the disc still retains its sense of quiet intimacy. Aidan Moffat's vocals barely rise above a whisper and only occasionally fall into a melody. Like Charles Bukowski and like the flatly painted nudes on the cover, Arab Strap are unflinchingly frank about drinking and sexing and all the messy parts that go with it. All of the humor, pathos and sadness come from the truth of the telling. All is not dreariness, though; there are times when the music rises up poignantly ("Soaps") and other moments when the lyrics do the same ("Islands"). This disc is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, deeply moving and compelling. SKU: 1003641
