Little Love Affairs
Griffith's late '80s albums moved from strength to strength, and this one is no exception; it's chock full of great singing, ace playing by the cream of Nashville sessioneers (including banjo innovator Bela Fleck and fiddle prodigy Mark O'Connor), and smartly written songs. Highlights include "Love Worea Halo (Back Before the War"), a wry quasi-zydeco tale of numbers running and hot-sheet hotels; "So Long Ago," a wrenching love ballad set in 1969; and the bluegrass special "Sweet Dreams Will Come," with harmony vocals and electric guitar by folkie icon John Stewart and hot licks from mandolin whiz Sam Bush. Fifth Dimension [Remastered]
The 1996 reissue of FIFTH DIMENSION includes six bonus tracks: "Why" (the B-side of the "Eight Miles High" single), "I Know My Rider (I Know You Rider)," "Psychodrama City," and alternate takes of "Eight Miles High," "Why" and "John Riley." The Byrds: David Crosby (vocals, guitar); Jim McGuinn (vocals, 12-string guitar); Chris Hillman (vocals, bass); Michael Clarke (drums). Additional personnel: Van Dyke Parks (keyboards); Gene Clark (tambourine, harmonica, vocals). Producers: Allen Stanton, Jim Dickson. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between December 22, 1965 and July 28, 1966. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan. All songs have been digitally remastered using a 20-Bit Super Mapping system. This is the album on which The Byrds truly exploded. They had already introduced the mainstream to a young folk singer named Bob Dylan by taking an electrified "Mr. Tambourine Man" to #1. They introduced California folk-rock to the masses, breaking ground for the likes of the Mamas & Papas and the Turtles. With FIFTH DIMENSION, The Byrds planted the seedsof psychedelia--and not just the San Francisco kind--in pop culture. The gray, dark trip of the Velvet Underground and the fuzzed-out minimalist boogie of such garage heroes as Count Five and the 13th Floor Elevators can also be found within these grooves. FIFTH DIMENSION recognized that musical higher consciousness had to be manifested in a dark side as well as a brighter one. Gene Clark's departure from the band prior to these recording sessions, and the decision not to cover any Bob Dylan songs, streamlined the Byrds' sound and made the group's vision clear. "Eight Miles High," a highly-charged sonic release, evokes both VU's "Heroin" and John Coltrane's jazz explosions. The higher consciousness of "Eight Miles High," the harmony-driven stomp of "2-4-2 Fox Trot," and the CCR-meets-Stax boogie of "Captain Soul," all drenched in heavy guitar distortion, were unlike anything the pop world had heard. For the next three years, sounds inspired by FIFTH DIMENSION would make up the soundtrack of a cultural revolution. SKU: 5048595

Odessey And Oracle (Stereo/Mono)
This edition of ODESSEY AND ORACLE contains the entire album in stereo, followed by the album in mono, plus 3 unissued tracks not included in their box set. The Zombies: Rod Argent (vocals, keyboards); Colin Blunstone (vocals); Paul Atkinson (guitar); Chris White (bass, background vocals); Hugh Grundy (drums). Reissue producer: Alec Palao. Includes original liner notes by Rod Argent and Al Kooper, and reissue liner notes by Alec Palao. Reappraised, and now widely accepted as a masterpiece of late 60s pop, this is as timeless as it is faultless. Swirling Mellotron over Colin Blunstone's emotive voice, with every track to be cherished. It was a major success in the USA, where the Zombies were appreciated, and they put "Time of The Season" near the top of the charts. The UK gave up on them after "She's Not There". Rod Argent went on to great success with Argent, Blunstone became a solo singer, but they have never forgotten their first love. The five Zombies are all alive and well, and are now bathing in the much-deserved praisethis album and their first band receives. SKU: 1014621

Legalize It
Personnel: Peter Tosh (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Al Anderson, Donald Kinsey (guitar); Robbie & Ras Lee (harp); Tyrone Downey (keyboards); Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Carlton Barrett, Santa (drums); Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Bunny Wailer (background vocals). Recorded in 1976. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. After spending 12 years as a member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter Tosh was eager to break free from the shadow of the legendary frontman. In 1976, he released LEGALIZE IT, still one of the most significant albums in the history of reggae. The title track expresses one of Tosh's many political causes, justifying the legalization of marijuana as a remedy for various medical ailments. "Burial" is one of several tracks that features the talents of the Wailers' stand-out lead guitarist, Al Anderson. Tosh addshis own seasoning to the reggae pot as he incorporates keyboards in "Whatcha Gonna Do" and synthesizers and sound effects on "Igziabeher." "Ketchy Shuby," a sing-along about fooling around, features the background vocal talents of Rita Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Judy Mowatt. Tosh's life ended too early, and LEGALIZE IT is the strongest testament to his legacy. Take a listen, and share the spirit of his genius. SKU: 1014792

Singularity
Collection of singles and early recordings by cult 90s Birmingham psych-rock band, considered by some to be one of the best British bands of that decade. Heralded at one time as the next Stone Roses, the band released several albums but never achieved mainstream success, thanks in part tobeing dropped weeks before the release of their Mercury Records debut after insulting label bosses at a gig. Their sound has been compared to Iron Butterfly, Marc Bolan, Cream, The Doors, Crazy Horse and Nick Drake. SKU: 6556230

High Frequencies
Bardo Pond: Michael Gibbons, Clint Takeda, IsobelSollenberger, Joe Culver, John Gibbons. Recorded at Studio Red, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bardo Pond ups the dosage considerably on AMANITA. The Philadelphia band's third album is also its first studio-recorded production. And what a difference the studio makes! As great as the basement-tapes of BUFO ALVARIUS are, the shockingly brilliant AMANITA reveals a depth and maturity at which all earlier efforts only hinted. "Limerick," AMANITA's monumental opener, has a dense, intricate arrangement that can be peeled apart to expose all the elements of the Bardo Pond sound. The knotted feedback trails of John and Michael Gibbons' guitars and tendrils of vocalist Isobel Sollenberger's phantasmal flute radiate from a nucleus of tantric bass (Clint Takeda). The quiet fury of "Rumination," the temerity of "Wank," the introspective mood of "Be a Fish," and the climactic unwindings of "RM" all stem from this atomic core. And when the Gibbons brothers weave the coils and braided filigree of "Tantric Porno," "The Tapir Song," and "Yellow Turban," they rival the lysergic majesty of such legendary forebears as Ash Ra Tempel or the transcendental gut-punch of Keiji Haino's formidable Fushitsusha. Tenacious D [PA]
Tenacious D: Kyle Gass (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jack Black (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel includes: David Grohl (guitar, drums, background vocals); Warren Fitzgerald, Ken Andrews (guitar); Woody Jackson (sitar); Andrew Gross (strings); Page McConnell (keyboards); Steve McDonald (bass); Alfredo Ortiz (percussion); John King (echoplex). Recorded at The Boat, Silverlake, California. If you never caught theirshort-lived TV show, you'll probably be most familiar with Tenacious D through the appearance of singer Jack Black as the bile-spitting music geek in the film HIGH FIDELITY. The sarcastic humor Black employed in that movie is a clue to the sound of his duo Tenacious D. With his partner Kyle Gass, Black digs into various areas of rock mythology and skewers them in fine comedic style. Whether he's delivering a mock-metal ode to heavy metal hero Ronnie James Dio in the appropriately titled "Dio" or indulging in too-outrageous-to-be-crass single-entendre sexual humor on "Kielbasa," Black's humor is always spot-on. While his no-holds-barred approach may be too much for some, those with a taste for the tasteless will find unending laughter in this disc. SKU: 1073383

Being There
Wilco: Jeff Tweedy (vocals, guitar, bass, radio); Jay Bennett (vocals, guitar, lap steel guitar, harmonica, accordion, piano, organ, drums); Ken Coomer (vocals, guitar, drums, percussion); Max Johnston (vocals, banjo, dobro, mandolin, fiddle); John Stirratt (vocals, violin, piano, bass). Additional personnel: Bob Egan (National steel guitar, pedal steel guitar); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Jesse Greene (violin); Dan Higgins (tenor & baritone saxophones); Larry Williams (tenor saxophone); Jerry Hey, Gary Grant (trumpet). Engineers include: Chris Sheppard, Martin Stebbing, Jim Rondinelli. Recorded at Chicago Recording Co. and Warzone Recorders, Chicago, Illinois; The Studio, Springfield, Missouri; Moonshine Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Wilco's second album is a sprawling collection of songs--19 of them on 2 CDs--about the rock and roll life and the price you pay to live it. A second album may seem a bit early to be getting into this sort of thing, but Wilco knows the life well; singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy and most of his bandmates had been on the road for years before with their underground country band Uncle Tupelo. Wilco rocks harder than Uncle Tupelo, and Tweedy's songs, which continue a theme previously explored by road warriors from Grand Funk Railroad to Paul Westerberg, offer a variety of characters and scenarios from that road. From the struggling Floridian rocker who can't figure out why no one will come to hear his band (the Stones-inspired "Monday") to the lonely fan who lives through his idol's exploits (the gorgeous "The Lonely 1"), to that first taste of star treatment ("Hotel Arizona"), Tweedy captures these stories with grace and elegance. Despite all this introspection, Wilco hasn't forgotten how to rock. "Monday" truly burns, and "I Got You (At The End Of The Century)" has the guitar-driven, big rock sound of Wilco's debut. There's also plenty of the country-rock that put Uncle Tupelo on the map. The smooth lilt of "Far, Far Away" and "Someday Soon" offer quite a contrast to the thrashing, distortion-laden songs that precede them. SKU: 1001873

State Property
STATE PROPERTY, the soundtrack to the Beanie Sigel gangsta movie vehicle, follows in the tradition of such gritty collections as Bobby Womack's ACROSS 110TH STREET and Curtis Mayfield's SUPERFLY in its dissection of thug life as it is lived in 21st century urban America. In particular there are several self-conscious nods inthe direction of Mayfield's masterpiece, especially on the wah-wah heavy "No Glory" and the heavily atmospheric "Bitch Niggas," while "Why Must I" features quotes from George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" in its no-frills exposition of thug motivation. Sigel is heavily featured throughout, lending his authentic thug persona to tracks such as the valedictory "Trouble Man" (not the Marvin Gaye song), and the autobiographical "Hood I Know," where, joined by fellow thugs Freeway, Young Chris, Sparks, and Oschino, he runs down his character's life in a chillingly matter-of-fact style. There's little relief in this unrelentingly bleak soundscape, though the '70s references in the musical backing win a few points for easing the general melancholy. SKU: 1070333

Making Movies
Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); John Illsley (bass); Pick Withers (drums). Additional personnel: Roy Bittan (keyboards). Recorded between July and August 1980. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The last album of their career that sounded as if they were trying to play, instead of going through the motions. David Knopfler had already departed from the band and brother Mark had a free rein, clear from any siblingrivalry. "Solid Rock," "Tunnel Of Love," "Romeo And Juliet" and "Skataway" would be on any decent greatest hits package. Following this artistic triumph they proceeded to release LOVE OVER GOLD, and we all know what album followed after that, don't we? SKU: 1006034

Small Change
Personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, piano); Harry Bluestone, Israel Baker, Nathan Kaproff, Nathan Ross, Murray Adler (violin); Sam Boghossian, David Schwartz (viola); Ed Lustgarden, Kathleen Lustgarden (cello); Lew Tabackin (tenor saxophone); Jim Hughart (bass); ShellyManne (drums). Recorded at Wally Heider Recording, Hollywood, California in July 1976. Unquestionably the definitive recording of Waits' early period, SMALL CHANGE brings his beatnik/grifter/gruff, poetic piano man persona into sharp, defining focus. Waits' blues/jazz/'40s pop amalgam is at its most cohesive here, as he's backed by three West Coast jazz vets and an occasional (never overweening) string section. "Tom Traubert's Blues," later covered by Rod Stewart, is a milestone, and one of the greatest cry-in-your-beer tunes of all time. Waits plays the down-and-out, alcohol-ravaged troubadour to perfection here as well as on "Invitation to the Blues" and the devastating "Bad Liver and a Broken Heart," where one can almost smell the cheap whiskey on his breath. It's not all misery, though. There's plenty of humor on the huckster/auctioneer rap of "Step Right Up" and the bad-gig nightmare of "The Piano Has Been Drinking [Not Me])." "The One That Got Away" and the title cut continue the aural dimestore novel approach Waits began early in his career. Things end with a quiet, romantic gesture; the poignant, understated 4 AM wistfulness of "I Can't Wait to Get Off Work." If you buy only one Waits '70s album, it should be this one. SKU: 5048752

Slipknot
Slipknot: Corey (vocals); Mick, James (guitar); Paul (bass); Joey (drums); Shawn, Chris (percussion); Craig (samples); Sid (DJ). Recorded at Indigo Ranch, Malibu, California. "Wait And Bleed" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. These self-proclaimed "freaks" from Des Moines draw upon elements of thrash, hip-hop, and shock-rock with brutal results. The music world may not have seen such a marriage of aggression and technical precision since the rise of thrash pioneers Slayer. At times Slipknot steps into the musical guises of heavy purveyors such as Korn, Powerman 5000, and Sepultura. However, even with the derivative nature of metal, this eight-member ensemble manages to be something original. SLIPKNOT is a mix of dark interludes that segue into carefully crafted songs. The tracks use metaphors to describe themes of isolation, insecurity, confusion, and self-loathing. In "Surfacing" and "No Life," rap verses give way to melodic choruses. The rhythmic pounding of "Prosthetics" is as complex as it is relentless; a credit to drummer Joey Jordison, whose virtuosity isthe driving force of Slipknot. "Only One" is a contrast of hip-hop funk and mosh-pit abandon. The band's style is best defined in "Scissors," where whispered lyrics give way to screams of "biding my time until the time is right / it's time." Slipknot has bid its time wisely and is poised to take its place among its heavy-handed musical peers. SKU: 5063878
