Guitar
Contains 3 bonus tracks. GUITAR opens with "Cotton Patch Rag," defying the listener to sit still. This is good-time music first and foremost. It's also a loving tribute to tradition and virtuosity by guitar master Dan Crary and his bluegrass cohorts. Crary's whistle-clean flat picking is displayed brilliantly on the Stanley Brothers' "Fling Ding," while Sam Bush's scampering mandolin adds to the percolating fun-fest of "Daybreak in Dixie." Thetongue-in-cheek "Memories of Mozart" presents some very familiar Mozartian themes in a bluegrass setting, taking a risk that pays off. Mark O'Conner and Byron Berline on fiddle and Bela Fleck and John Hickman on banjo contribute beautiful solo turns and ensemble work. The level of technical brilliance on display here rivals that of arguably more famous guitarists--perhaps a lingering bias against bluegrass as being corny or outdated works against its practitioners. Based on the light, heat and joy released on the "Bill Monroe Medley" and throughout GUITAR, these guys ought to be more well-known than they are. SKU: 5054055

Last Tour, The
Personnel: Ted Hawkins (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recorded at McCabe's Guitar Shop, Santa Monica, California on November 5, 1994; The Pres House, Madison, Wisconsin on October 8, 1994; Goochi's, Wenatchee, Washington on July 8, 1994. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This collection of solo acoustic performances was recorded live in 1994, just months before Hawkins's death. After a checkered recording career and years spent performing his unique brand of soul tinged with country and blues for passersby at Venice Beach, California, Hawkins finally reached the masses with his music via the spacious coffers of DGC Records. This live album, though, captures him at his most riveting, using only his acoustic guitar and gritty, Sam Cooke-cum-Richie Havens vocal styling to deliver 20 mostly self-penned tunes. From the country-tinged self-pity of Webb Pierce's "There Stands The Glass" to the brutally realistic portrait of life below the povertyline on Hawkins's own "Sorry You're Sick," the singer comes across like a force of nature, with no possible obstacles separating him from the direct, intense delivery of the song. Ultimately, his message is one of faith and salvation, both earthly and spiritual, as evinced on "A Thing Called Love" and John Fogerty's "Long As I Can See The Light." SKU: 1018162

Trane's Blues
Personnel: John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Kenny Drew, Horace Silver, Sonny Clark, McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, Wynton Kelly (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Paul Chambers, Steve Davis, Chuck Israels (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Art Taylor, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey (drums). Producers: Herbert Kimmel, Alfred Lion, Teddy Reig, Tim Wilson. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded between March 1956 and September 1960. Includes liner notes by Bob Belden. Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. In short, this collectionof Coltrane performances is fantastic. Though each tune here is based on more or less traditional 12-bar blues structures, there is never a dull or predictable moment. The changes are as natural as breathing. Coltrane, flanked by such legends as Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, McCoy Tyner, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey, simultaneously reveres and subverts the form with his wild, supremely inventive approach to harmonic expression. On "One And Four" (later recorded as "Mr. Day"), Coltrane modernizes the blues by superimposing the major third over the suspended chords, creating compelling, angular tensions. "Trane's Blues," a tune Coltrane later re-recorded with Miles Davis, represents the saxophonist's gift for composing catchy themes around his challenging solo flights. The inclusion of two cuts from BLUE TRAIN makes this set a must. Both "Blue Trane" and "Locomotion" are modern jazz classics that feature definitive, virtuousic soloing by all of the musicians. TRANE'S BLUES is a keeper. This is a case study in how a musician can embrace one of the simplest, most traditional forms and revitalize it with dazzling, boundary-pushing creativity. SKU: 1006779

Delivery Man, The [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar, ukulele, Wurlitzer piano, tambourine); Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams (vocals); John McPhee (pedal steel guitar); Steve Nieve (melodica, piano, Wurlitzer piano, harmonium, organ, Hammond b-3 organ); Davey Faragher (Fender Rhodes piano, bass guitar); Pete Thomas (drums, percussion). Recording information: Delta Recording, Clarksdale, Mississippi (2004); The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California; Ocean Way Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. In between Elvis Costello's 2003 album of jazzy, piano-based ballads (NORTH) and his 2004 album of orchestral, neo-classical compositions (IL SOGNO), rock's original Renaissance man somehow found the time to journey down to Oxford, Mississippi with his band the Imposters (essentially the Attractions with a different bassist) for the follow-up to his masterful 2002 pop album, WHEN I WAS CRUEL. There are some parallels to that record; a similar sense of raw immediacy, spare arrangements, and a couple of songs that echo WHEN I WAS CRUEL's churning, cyclical feel. For the most part, however, THE DELIVERY MAN, with its prevalence of rootsy country and soul influences (and duets with Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris), is closer in style to the much-loved 1986 Costello album KING OF AMERICA. "The Name of This Thing Is Not Love" sounds like it ought to be powering a Sam Moore comeback album, and "The Judgement" was, in fact, recorded by Solomon Burke for his 2002 comeback record, DON'T GIVE UP ON ME. Some cuts leave the rootsiness behind (the slinky, image-laden title song; the pounding, urgent "Bedlam"), but THE DELIVERY MAN is ultimately a deep bow to the American musical inspirations that are a huge part of Costello's vision. Road Scholars
Spyro Gyra: Julio Fernandez (vocals, guitar); Jay Beckenstein (saxophone); Tom Schuman (keyboards); Scott Ambush (bass); Joel Rosenblatt (drums, percussion). Recorded live between March and October 1997. If you don't like Lite Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Instrumental Pop, whatever you want to call it; stuff that wouldn't sound out of place in between David Sanborn and Kenny G on your local radio station, you probably shouldn't even be reading this far, because Spyro Gyra are avatars of the style. If their bag is your bag, however, you can feel comfortable diving right in to the sonic tapestry that is ROAD SCHOLARS. The band's synth-driven instrumental assault, led by keyboardist Tom Schuman, has remained consistent throughout their years of recording and touring together, and the formula here is very much in keeping with their trademark sound. Funky drums, complex, dexterous keyboard work, and spare, melodic sax lines abound. The title refers to the fact every track here (with the exception of the newly recorded version of "Best Friends") was recorded live in a different U.S. city. The kicker is that all of these live tracks sound studio-perfect, both in performance and sound quality, whichare two of the main things that people have come to expect from the men of Spyro Gyra. GOAT (Greatest Of All Time Featuring James T. Smith)
Contains a hidden track after "Ill Bomb." Personnel includes: LL Cool J, Kelly Price, Method Man, Redman, DMX, Prodigy, Snoop, Jayo Felony, Xzibit, Ja Rule, Amil, Carl Thomas, Tiki Diamond, Candice Love. Producers include: James "Bimmy" Antney, Rockwilder, Vada Nobles, DJ Scratch, Adam F. Recorded at The Hit Factory and Mirror Image Studios, New York, New York. One of the lasthip-hop veterans standing, with many platinum albums and leading film roles to his credit, LL Cool J has taken the art form to a higher level than the music industry could have ever imagined back when he "rocked the bells" in 1985. Still sporting his battle rhyme style, LL returns with yet another classic album, G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time). His collaborations on this album show that LL's very aware of the current hip-hop audience, teaming up with Mobb Deep's Prodigy on his hometown dedication "Queens," and Snoop Dogg and Xzibit on the West Coast-flavored "You Can't Fuck with Me." Those jams will have the hardcore fans satisfied, but then, as usual, LL gets freaky, with songs such as "Hello," featuring Amil, and "Imagine That" featuring LeShaun, that should please the ladies. LL's versatile persona proves that he is, indeed, the G.O.A.T. SKU: 1042348

Diamonds On The Inside
Personnel includes: Ben Harper (vocals, various instruments); Ladysmith Black Mambazo (vocals); Nicky P., Al Anderson (guitar); Greg Leisz (pedal steel); Amy Wilkins (harp); Danielle Charles-Hunter (violin); Darrell Sims (viola); Rebecca Yeh (cello); Leo Chelyapov (clarinet); Barbara Nightengale (accordion); Ron Blake (trumpet); David Ralikce (trombone); Greg Kurstin (electric piano, Clavinet, celeste, Hammond B-3 organ); Juan D. Nelson (bass); Oliver Francis Charles (drums, background vocals); Leon Mobley (percussion, background vocals); Carla L. Benson, Misty Love (background vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California. In the three years-plus interim between thisand his last studio album, Ben Harper traversed the world, and the already introspective singer/songwriter has clearly done even more soul-searching and emerged with his most earnest (and that's no mean feat), focused set to date. DIAMONDS ON THE INSIDE flows organically with that transcendent feeling exemplfied by lines so simple and revealing as "can you look into my eyes, or has your heart gone blind," which harbor the ability to subtly wend their way into the subconscious and the heart simultaneously. Harper's gathered his acclaim via trenchant lyricism and his knack for adeptly and sincerely blending many styles into a rocking, grooving concoction. On "Brown Eyed Blues," he channels Al Green before breaking down into a jam reminiscent of Santana or War, then follows it with the P-Funk-esque "Bring The Funk." He recalls Sam Cooke's spirituals on the breathtaking "When She Believes," and can pull off a reincarnation of Cat Stevens at his apex on the title track, as well as on "Amen Omen," and "Everything." With this solid, thoughtful record, Harper continues the heartfelt soul-folk-funk-jam. that won him a cult following from Deadheads to indie rockers. SKU: 1080507

Miss Fortune
Personnel includes: Allison Moorer (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rob McNelley, (acoustic & electric guitars); Michael Noble (acoustic guitar, banjo, dobro); Jay Bennet, R.S. Field, David Griss (electric guitar); Chris Carmichael (violin); Jim Hoke (clarinet, tenor & baritone saxophones); Billy Huber (euphonium); NeilRosengarden (French horn); Michael Webb (Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Russ Pahl, Allison Presswood (bass); Greg Morrow (drums, percussion); Rick Schell (percussion, background vocals); Manfred Jerome (percussion); Yvonne Hodges, Kim Morrison (background vocals). Don't tell anybody, but tasteful country artiste Allison Moorer is in fact the younger sister of pop crossover manque Shelby Lynne. Moorer's PR downplays the connection, presumably to enable her work (quite rightly) to stand on its own merits, but knowing that branch of the family tree makes it all the more impressive to note how Moorer steadfastly refuses to dilute her music with pop trappings in a grab for the mainstream-appeal brass ring. Instead, MISS FORTUNE is full of the kind of quietly sophisticated songwriting and humbly elegant arrangements that wouldn't have sounded out of place in Nashville's late-'60s radio heyday. All this would be for naught, of course, were it not for the communicative powers of Moorer's voice, flexible enough to bend any melody to its will, but worldly wise enough to avoid bravura displays in favor of straightforward storytelling and unpretentious emoting. That's what country is supposed to be all about. SKU: 1073970

Live At The Troubadour 1969
Personnel: Tim Buckley (vocals, acoustic guitar); Lee Underwood (guitar); John Balkin (bass); Art Trip (drums); Carter C.C. Collins (congas). Compilation producers: Bill Inglot, K. Lee Hammond. Recorded live at The Troubador, Los Angeles, California, on September3-4, 1969. Originally released on Rhino (71663). Includes liner notes by Martin Aston. It's ironic that Buckley's most fully realized album wouldn't be released until after his death, but it's logical that it would turn out to be a live recording. Buckley was always a "natural musician" who flourished in settings of spontaneity where he was free to follow his muse unbounded. While he made many excellent albums, the confines of the studio fettered him enough to keep him from giving 100 percent. As this and other live Buckley albums prove, the singer's live performance took him and his audience to another level entirely. Captured here in his most creatively fertile period (circa BLUE AFTERNOON/HAPPY SAD), Buckley puts his superman voice to good use, scatting, moaning, crooning and wailing as the moment requires. His jazzy backing band, including longtime guitarist Lee Underwood and drummer Art Tripp, provides a nimble, responsive landscape for Buckley's voice to prowl. From the ethereal tones on the folk-jazz samba "Blue Melody" to his animalistic groans and cries on the show-stopping "Gypsy Woman," LIVE AT THE TROUBADOUR presents one of the world's finest singers at the top of his game. Closer Colder
Faultline: David Kosten. Additional personnel includes: Dennis Hopper (voice); Keith Bayley (guitar, harmonica); Kyra Humphreys (violin); Emma Black (cello); Ian Carr (trumpet); Mark Feltham (harmonica). Recorded at Master Rock Studios, London, England. David Kosten's Faultline runs through the non-reconciled territories of head-scouring electronic noise and richly cinematic orchestration. CLOSER COLDER occupies an intermediate zone where instrumentation reminiscent of Talk Talk's SPIRIT OF EDEN and LAUGHING STOCK is at unstable equilibrium with odd digital effects, manipulated samples, and programmed rhythms. CLOSER COLDER's tectonic parameters constantly shift between melodramatic musicality and dance-inflected electronica, creating a uniquely attractive tension. Nowhere is this more apparent than in "Mute," the exceptional pre-CLOSER COLDER single (included here) that pits Kosten's slow-burning digitalia against taut dual-guitar interplay and trumpeter Ian Carr's sensuous KIND OF BLUE epiphanies. CLOSER COLDER is a rewarding, albeit uneasy, listen. Kosten likes to unsettle thelistener, and he does so well. Wistful piano-and-violin figures are rattled by volatile breakbeats ("Awake," "Papercut") or entwined with sighs and a particularly disturbing "Blue Velvet" sample ("Closer Colder"). Or witness the bizarre vocal extractions of "Tiny Consumer," the way scratchy rhythms and a frisky, Steve Reich-like violin-bassoon-and-xylophone cipher barely cover up the threatening answering-machine message at the heart of "Control," and the hidden track's echoing empty-room ambience. "Partyline Honey" achieves the album's one instance of consonance, balancing obscene chat-line banter with an equally salacious, psychedelicized guitar-and-harmonica downtempo groove. SKU: 1073285

Solitude Standing
Personnel includes: Suzanne Vega (vocals, guitar); Mitch Easter, Marc Shulman (electric guitar); Michael Visceglia (bass); Shawn Colvin (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, New York; RPM Sound Studios, New York, New York; A&M Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California; Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York; Celestial Sound Studio, New York, New York; Carnegie Hill Studios, New York, New York. For the follow-up to her groundbreaking debut album, Vega made a wise move by incorporating her band further into the arrangement process. Thus, instead of delving deeper into her own introspective muse, she reaches outward to pursue a musical vision markedly expanded from the friendly folk-rock of the previous album. Thedark, brooding influence of Leonard Cohen is felt more strongly here, as songs like the title track and "Night Vision" take the listener into a dark, moody world where unsettling emotions are described with moody, poetic flair. SOLITUDE STANDING also featured Vega's breakthrough hit "Luka," a startlingly original, masterfully written first-person account of a young boy whose denial is the only way to deal with his parents' physical abuse. The song rightfully established Vega as an artist of the first order, and won her legions of international fans. SKU: 1006528
