UB40 Present The Fathers Of Reggae
THE FATHERS OF REGGAE features new vocal interpretations of original UB40 songs. UB40:Ali Campbell (vocals, guitar); Astro (vocals); Robin Campbell (guitar, background vocals); Brian Travers (saxophone); Michael Virtue, Earl Falconer (keyboards); James Brown (drums). Additional personnel: The Mighty Diamonds, Freddie McGregor, Gegory Isaacs, Brent Dowe, Honey Boy, Alton Ellis, Jackie Robinson, Max Romeo, Bob Andy, Ken Boothe, Winston Groovy, Leroy Sibbles, John Holt, Toots Hibbert. Recorded at Grafton Music Complex, Kingston, Jamaica and Dep International Studios, Birmingham, England. Includes liner notes by Lloyd Bradley. Always quick to honor influential songs and artists, it's no wonder that Birmingham reggae legends UB40 would create a concept where they'd get some of the genre's greatest vocalists to sing over some of the band's better known songs. THE FATHERS OF REGGAE serves as an important bridge for both a younger generation that may have only been weaned on third generation reggae covers by ska-pop bands and for die-hard fans of this unique musical form who feel the best reggae music has already been made. Complete with the stellar liner notes by noted author Lloyd Bradley and the very informative track-by-track annotations, this collection serves notice to detractors who are quick to label UB40 as merely a cover band. Among the great names appearing are the Mighty Diamonds ("You Could Meet Somebody"), Freddie McGregor ("You're Always Pulling Me Down"), Gregory Isaacs ("Bring Me Your Cup"), and Max Romeo ("Watchdogs"). While all these performances shine, highlights include John Holt's smooth delivery of "The Pillow" and Toots Hibbert's personally stamped take on "C'est La Vie." With mixes included by equally legendary names like Sly and Robbie and Steely and Clevie, THE FATHERS OF REGGAE is the indispensable 2002 roots project. SKU: 1074014

Boy With The Arab Strap, The
Belle and Sebastian includes: Stuart Murdoch, Stuart David, Isobel Campbell, Stevie Jackson. Additional personnel: Gail Anderson, Claire Campbell, Eilidh Campbell, Euan Forrester, David D. MacKay, Sarah Wilson (strings); Ian MacKay (pipes); Neil Robertson (bass). After 1997's IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER made them critics' darlings, Scottish octet Belle And Sebastian ran straight into a series of label woes, and into the inevitable feeding frenzy that surrounds a free agent with their prodigious talents. Their experience with one label exec is detailed in "Seymour Stein" on THE BOY WITH THE ARAB STRAP, which finds the band building on the pastoral pop charms of SINISTER, adding a palpable layer of angerand an increasingly rich sonic palette to their painfully shy tales of despair. Near-overnight success taught the band a lot. This album moves from their trademark confessional diary sketches (still in abundance, as on the disarmingly naive "Is It Wicked Not To Care," and the tender "Rollercoaster Ride") to genuine social criticism, as on the title track, a narrative meditation on Britain's pretensions and societal ills. "Chickfactor" pulls apart the banality the band encountered on arrival in New York, an experience which only served to deepen the bashful anger that makes Belle and Sebastian so endearing. Temple Of Low Men
Following fast on the heels ofthe band's debut, CROWDED HOUSE, TEMPLE OF LOW MEN was one of the most critically acclaimed yet commercially neglected releases of the late '80s. Opening with the gorgeous "I Feel Possessed," this stunner of an album is an expression of the thrills and dangers of fame and success. From "Into Temptation," where Finn comes so close to adultery that you can almost feel it to "Better Be Home Soon," where his opportunity for redemption lies, the emotion is palpable in every line. Finn is always a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to creative ways of describing coital bliss, and this collection contains the debut of the first of many paeans to the orgasm, the not-so-subtly titled "When You Come." Short and sweet, TEMPLE OF LOW MEN is a superb follow-up to CROWDED HOUSE. SKU: 1001451

Muddy Waters
Personnel: Redman, Erick Sermon, K-Solo, Jamal, Keith Murray, Method Man, Rockwilder, Napalm, Chris Tricarico (rap vocals); Naja (spoken vocals). Producers includes: Reggie "Redman" Noble, Erick Sermon, Rockwilder. Engineers: Troy Hightower, Dave Greenberg. For his third album, Redman returns to the funk-inspired music that made his debut a classic. Produced by Def Squad leader Erick Sermon, Rockwilder and the Funk Docta Spot himself, MUDDY WATERS is a beat-driven album, with both smooth, bass-heavy samples and original hard-core tracks. Not much has changed about Redman's delivery, which is still rough and rugged with mouthfuls of lyrics. The album is blessed with the wordsmith tactics of not only Redman, but fellow Def Squad members Keith Murray, Erick Sermon and K-Solo. Redman proves here that he is approaching veteran status withflair and style. SKU: 1005712

Whole Story, The
THE WHOLE STORY is a sampler of the early tracks that show the promise of Kate Bush, who never contented herself as an ordinary singer/songwriter. The always-experimental Bush had a knack for populating her songs with peculiar characters. There's Catherine of "Wuthering Heights"; there's Peter Reich of "Cloudbusting" (an extraordinary track in every way); there's the mother in the lilting "Army Dreamers"; and there's also the womb-confined baby who documents a nuclear blast in the moving "Breathing." Bush also looks to eclectic sources for inspiration. "The Dreaming" was inspired by Rolf Harris's "Sun Arise" and the Aboriginal song "Aeroplanes, Aeroplanes." "Hounds of Love" took its inspiration from the film "Night of the Demon." This compilation covers thefirst decade of Kate Bush's career (until 1986) and is a great place for discovering her myriad talents. Many have followed in her footsteps, but few have matched her. Atomic
Lit: A. Jay Popoff (vocals); Jeremy Popoff (guitar, background vocals); Kevin Baldes (bass): Allen Shellenberger (drums). Additional personnel: Danny Walker(guitar); David Campbell, Larry Corbett, Rachel Purkin, Joel Derouin, Marvin Gordy III (strings); James Eheringer (Hammond organ); Gabe McNair (keyboards); Steven Tyler, Don Gilmore (background vocals); Niels Bye Nielsen. Recorded in Los Angeles, California, New York, New York, and Boston, Massachusetts in 2000. With the hook-packed ATOMIC, Lit firmly throttles any notion of a sophomore jinx on its second major-label offering. While still showing a penchant for snappy songs with oodles of choppy and catchy guitar chords that make fans of Green Day and Blink-182 swoon, this Orange County quartet looked to the classic rock icons of their youth for inspiration this time out. Pumped full of harmonies and swinging hooks, "Everything's Cool" reverberates with swinging British Invasion hooks while the acoustic guitar and string arrangements of "Happy In The Meantime" finds Lit's Popoff sibs making like The Everly Brothers having tea with Elvis Costello. Elsewhere, these vintage-clothing-loving punks keep the volume on eleven for the STP post-grunge of "Lipstick And Bruises," Weezer-flavored "Drop D" and sweeping Queen-like pomp-ballad "Slip." Choosing to focus primarily on the age-old issue of broken relationships, Lit keeps its sense of humor intact amidst the Beach Boys harmonies and crunchy chords of "Addicted." Equally impressive is the bonus cut "Over My Head," which features Aerosmith's Steven Tyler providing harmonies on this chugging slice of pop-punk. SKU: 1070992

Workbook
Personnel: Bob Mould (vocals, guitars, keyboards, mandolin, percussion); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Tony Maimone (bass); Anton Fier (drums); Steve Haigler (percussion). Recorded at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota and Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York. The release of WORKBOOK was greeted with universal critical acclaim. Comfortable with the old Husker Du three-piece formula, Bob Mould signed up Tony Maimone (bass) and Anton Fier (drums), both ex-members of Pere Ubu, for his solo debut. Ex-Tiny Lights cellist Jane Scarpantoni also adds some spectacular highlights and shading to the proceedings--especially on "Sinners and Their Repentances." The album displays the natural progression of Mould's writing--though admittedly, the volume and feedback are turned down a notch, and a couple of tracks, in particular "Sunspots," a pretty solo acoustic guitar piece, may surprise people used to his traditional gale-force guitar. Standouts include the deceptively chipper "See a Little Light," which disguises its sadness in a brilliant pop wrapper, the punchy "Poison Years," which seems to be Mould's version of the Husker Du story, and "Brasilia Crossed with Trenton," arguably Mould's finest composition, full of howling regret, jangling guitars, and the kind of introspection that you can sing along with. Who's Afraid Of The Art Of Noise
Art Of Noise: Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan. The Art of Noise's first full-length release, from 1984, is also their best and most intriguing. Containing the dance club smash "Beat Box (Diversion One)," the MTV favorite "Close (To the Edit)" and the influential, near-ambient "Moments In Love," WHO'S AFRAID is a revolutionary album that changed the course of modern electronic music. Its effects were felt equally in postmodern avant-garde circles and the hippest of dance clubs. Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik and Gary Langan's work has both melodic and rhythmic sophistication and, perhaps more importantly, a playful sense of humor. "Snapshot" cheekily quotes The Who's "Baba O'Riley," and the key rhythmic element of "Close (To The Edit)" is the sound of a car ignition. WHO'S AFRAIDalso has darker moments, like "A Time For Fear," which prominently features tapes of the 1983 US invasion of Grenada, and the foreboding, ambient pieces that end the second side. Alive Vol.4 (Symphony) [Digipak]
Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums); Tommy Thayer (guitar, background vocals). Additional personnel: The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Melbourne Symphony Ensemble, The Australian Children's Choir. Recorded live in Melbourne, Australia on February 28, 2003. Presumably responding to the demand of fans refusing to accept their retirement, the Kiss juggernaut rebounded from a supposed farewell tour to launch their own label with the release of SYMPHONY ALIVE IV, a double-disc set featuring the make-up clad quartet's collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. With this unusual outing, Kiss follows in the footsteps of seminal classical/hard-rock fusion records like Metallica's S&M and Deep Purple's CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA. Gene Simmons and company keep it interesting by including a section of traditionally rendered tunes as well as those with accompaniment by the smaller Melbourne Symphony Ensemble, and finally a full second CD with the entire orchestra. Noticeably absent is Ace Frehley, whose decision to get off the are-we/aren't-we-retired merry-go-round resulted in the hiring of former Black 'n Blue guitarist Tommy Thayer as his replacement. Die-hards and casual fans will be pleased by a set selection that ranges from powerfully arranged classics like "King of the Night Time World" and "Do You Love Me" to stripped-down renditions of more recent fare such as "Psycho Circus." Jam Session
Personnel: Charlie Parker, Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); FlipPhillips, Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Charlie Shavers (trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Barney Kessel (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); J.C. Heard (drums). Recorded in Hollywood, California in June, 1952. Orginally released on Verve (8002). Originally released as NORMAN GRANZ'S JAM SESSIONS #1 AND #2. JAM SESSION was compiled from a 1952 jam session which brought together three of history's greatest alto saxophonists; Parker, Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter, as well as Ben Webster and Flip Phillips on tenor sax. Orchestrated by Norman Granz to come as close to an authentic jam session as possible, this is the first of the Jazz at the Philharmonic series. The album includes an original blues tune ("Jam Blues"), a medley of ballads selected by each musician, and a mellow blues tune called "Funky Blues." The standard "What is This Thing Called Love," stands out particularly for its follow-the-leader style ending, with each musician trading fours. Interestingly, the meeting of these three greats, with their widely varying styles, results not in spectacular and fiercely competitive playing, but rather in a slight muting and sense of reserve from all three. Music For Cats
Full performer name: Cevin Key & The Subconscious Electronic Orchestra. Personnel: Cevin Key; Ashok Sarkar, John West (vocals, flute); Genesis P. Orridge (vocals, spoken vocals); Philth, D.R. Goettel (synthesizer); Spybey (sound effects). Recorded between 1994 and 1997. Key reinvestigates his musical roots on MUSIC FOR CATS. For his first solo-album proper after leaving anti-vivisection industrial project Skinny Puppy, Key's gone back to such ancient equipment as Casios, '80s rhythm boxes, Moogs, ARPs, and Buchla Boxes to render these sounds flesh. Perhaps all of those sounds are coming fresh out of Key's sampler, but the compositions he has woven out of them on CATS reflect an affinity for their Luddite charms. These aren't songs so much as experimental didactics fallen off the deep end. "Meteorite" is a raining shower of blips, burbles, squeaks, squirts, and squelches, all choreographed to the inner clockwork of a rupturing universe. "Inside Jam World" features the beatnik narration of Genesis P. Orridge (late of Psychic TV), who spouts fuzzed-out rhetoric over boiling cauldrons of synths and mild, power-plant cacophony. You can find relief, however, during the space-walk blitzkrieg hop of "Go Go Boots", which is like Cluster being crushed in a diode-pressing plant. Like Wonderland's venerable Cheshire, CATS is sure to leave you grinning mischievously. SKU: 1046620

New Adventures In Hi-Fi
Most of the songs on NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI were recorded live, or during pre-concert soundchecks, on R.E.M.'s 1995 MONSTER tour. R.E.M.: Mike Mills (vocals, piano, organ, Farfisa organ, Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer, bass); Michael Stipe (vocals, synthesizer); Bill Berry (acoustic guitar, whistle, synthesizer, bass, drums, percussion); Peter Buck (guitar, banjo, mandolin, bozouki, electric sitar, bass). Additional personnel: Patti Smith (vocals);Nathan December (slide guitar, guitar, tambourine, guiro); Andy Carlson (violin); Scott McCaughey (autoharp, piano, ARP Odyssey synthesizer, Farfisa organ). Engineers include: Adam Kaspar, John Keane, Pat McCarthy. Recorded at Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington; John Keane Studio, Athens, Georgia; Louie's Clubhouse, Los Angeles, California. NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. In the wake of the raging, guitar-fueled MONSTER, R.E.M. has made an album dominated by disconsolate ballads and acoustic instrumentation. NEW ADVENTURES has a stately, elegiac feel. It's punctuated by a few all-out rockers, but the overall mood is dusky and introspective. Michael Stipe's stream-of-consciousness imagery has developed into an incisive, poetic style of great power and resonance, from the religious overtones of "Undertow" (which reveals a Can influence) to the breathless travelogue of "Departure." The opener, "How the West Was Won And Where It Got Us," sets a dark tone, with an eerie organ backdrop and a mournful piano providing a staccato riff. Punk goddess Patti Smith guests on "E-Bow the Letter," a wordy ramble that finds Stipe questioning, and ultimately denigrating, "this fame thing." A similar theme is explored on "The Wake-Up Bomb," a MONSTERish raveup that attacks celebrity star trips. NEW ADVENTURES is loaded with musical surprises, including a zippy synthesizer that sparks "Leave," a campy instrumental called "Zither" and various discordant touches throughout. Lyrically and musically, R.E.M. stands its ground throughout, remaining as fresh and innovative as ever. SKU: 1004821

Kissing Jessica Stein
Compilation producers: Ken Druker, Ron Goldstein. In the interest of full disclosure, let's begin by defining what this soundtrack isn't. Those who have seen the film's commercial or trailer, where the only music heard is that of quirky singer-songwriter Jill Sobule and New York postmodern lounge cult heroes Dave's True Story, may expect to hear those artists. That expectation will not be met, presumably due to oblique music industry machinations. What you will get is a batch of tunes by some of the finest female jazz singers in Verve's vaults (some of whom are heard in the film). While the mating of movie and music isn't quite an identical match between the lesbian romantic comedy andit's audio counterpart, who would presume to argue with a selection that includes Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday? The members of Dave's True Story perhaps, but surely this album's audience has them safely outnumbered. SKU: 1072924

Everything I Love
Personnel: Eliane Elias (vocals, piano); Rodney Jones (guitar); Marc Johnson, Christian McBride (bass); Jack DeJohnette, Carl Allen (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York in May & June 1999. Pianist Eliane Elias makes a strong effort with the very traditional EVERYTHING I LOVE, which apparently means she has a healthy penchant for straight-ahead swinging. She does so expertly on several tracks, displaying a relaxed, supple feel for several standards and a few craftilypenned originals of her own. She is joined by two different trios made up of either Christian McBride and Carl Allen or Marc Johnson and Jack DeJohnette in alternating roles. As a bonus, Elias once again treats us to a sampling of her fine vocals, caressing the melodies of gems like "I Fall in Love too Easily" and "They Say It's Wonderful" with her dusky, Brazilian-tinged lilt. In particular, her playful articulation on the Johnny Burke sizzler, which also features a guest spot by guitarist Rodney Jones, makes for a rousing disc highlight. Other golden cuts include a dancing samba take on Cole Porter's "I Love You" and a very moving rendition of the classic "Autumn Leaves." SKU: 1075489

Bed Of Roses, A
Personnel: Lal Waterson, Maria Gilhooley (vocals); Oliver Knight (guitar); Jody Stecher (mandolin); Chopper (cello). Although Lal Waterson's recording career stretches back to the '60s, and has subsequently seen remarkable collaborations with sister Norma (A TRUE HEARTED GIRL) and brother Mike (BRIGHT PHOEBUS), greatest acclaim came in 1996 with ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, her first collaboration with son Oliver Knight. Sessions for its successor were cut short by Lal's death. Rather like the posthumous Janis Joplin album PEARL, A BED OF ROSES had to be completed after the singer's demise. This probably explains the inclusion of two instrumentals by Knight and the reappearance of a song from the previous album ("At First She Starts"), albeit in a radically different, solo rendition. A BED OF ROSES can't hope to have the impact of its predecessor, but listeners hoping for more in the same vein won't be disappointed. Lal's voice and lyrics remain remarkable. Accompaniment is sparse. Maria Gilhooley harmonises on Ewan MacColl's "Just a Note." Charles O'Connor's strings enhance "Foolish One." Mandolin, cello, trombone, and saxophone make one-off appearances. Most often the only accompaniment is the limpid resonance of Oliver Knight's guitar and Lal's own occasional vocal harmonies. A BED OF ROSES is tinged with the poignant knowledge that Lal's voice and pen have beenstilled. SKU: 1015815

BBC Live In Concert
Badfinger: Pete Ham, Joey Molland (vocals, guitar); Tom Evans (vocals, bass); Mike Gibbons (drums). Principally recorded live at The Paris Theatre, London, England on June 8, 1972 & August 10, 1973. Includes liner notes by Dan Matovina. More than 25 years after the original Badfinger split up, the Welsh group has earned universal acclaim as the quintessential power-pop band. But back in the early '70s, its unique brand of melodic, Beatles-inspired rock was generally considered too bubblegum by the music elite. Attempting to fit in with the rock mainstream, Badfinger rarely played its sparkling pop hits during concerts, instead concentrating on a hard-edged rock sound affectionately known at the time as boogie. BBC IN CONCERT 1972-1973 captures Badfinger at the height of its boogie phase, performing 15 songs live for BBC radio. In the studio, it was leader Pete Ham who created the band's signature hits; however, on stage guitarist Joey Molland was in charge. With the exception of a 1970 BBC version of "Come and Get It," no other hits are performed. Instead, Badfinger jams on extended versions of Joey Molland songs such as "Better Days" and "Suitcase." Presumably to show off the band's instrumental prowess, Badfinger even performs versions of Dave Mason's "Only You Know and I Know" and "Feelin' Alright." While the album features several acoustic interludes, it's basically a hard rock collection that stands as a testament toBadfinger's versatility and timeless appeal. SKU: 3108991

The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr. Includes a 30-page color booklet documenting artwork for all the number one singles recorded by The Beatles. Engineers include: Norman Smith, Geoff Emerick, Barry Sheffield. Recorded at Apple, Olympic Sound, Trident and Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Pathe Marconi, Paris, France, between 1962 & 1970. Includes liner notes by George Martin. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew (2000, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). For the six years the Beatles were recording for Capitol Records, the Fab Four ascended to top of the American and British charts an astonishing 27 times. This single-disc compilation brings those hits together in one place to span every phase of the foursome's highly influential career. Early Merseybeat-flavored sides like "Love Me Do" (the band's first Stateside hit), "She Loves You," and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" struck a chord early on with hordes of screaming teens. Unfortunately, this found the band temporarily dismissed as mere teen idols despite these numbers coming as a result of the vaunted Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership. The timeless "Yesterday" struck a worldwide chord (and subsequently became one of the most played songs of all time) and Liverpool's favorite sons soon found themselves shifting gears. They were soon dabbling with flower power ("All You Need is Love"), character-driven storytelling ("Eleanor Rigby"), and allowing glimpses behind the Beatles curtain ("Hey Jude," "The Ballad of John & Yoko"). By the time "The Long and Winding Road" became theBeatles' chart-topping swan song, popular music's landscape had been permanently altered. SKU: 1046151
