Time
Fleetwood Mac: Bekka Bramlett (vocals); Billy Burnette, Dave Mason (vocals, guitar); Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards); Mick Fleetwood (guitar, drums, percussion); John McVie (bass). Additional personnel: Lucy Fleetwood (vocals); Michael Thompson (guitar); Fred Tackett (trumpet); Steve Thoma, John Jones (keyboards); Scott Pinkerton (programming); Lindsey Buckingham (background vocals). Producers includes: Fleetwood Mac,Richard Dashut, Christine McVie, Dave Mason, Billy Burnette. Recorded at Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California. The formidable Fleetwood Mac lineup of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie emotionally imploded in 1987 after the release of TANGO IN THE NIGHT. After twelve years of endless touring, romantic melodrama, substance abuse and internal spats, the band deflated when Buckingham quit. Nicks, Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie pressed on, touring with guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito. In 1990 the sextet released BEHIND THE MASK, but Nicks soon abandoned ship, no doubt alleviating the band's costume costs, but leaving a creative hole. In 1995 Fleetwood Mac struggled back with TIME, featuring Christine, John, Fleetwood, ex-Traffic guitarist Dave Mason, Burnette, and vocalist Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Delaney and Bonnie). Although Christine's crisp songwriting and the steadfast Fleetwood-McVie rhythm section remained, the absence of Buckingham-Nicks is notable. Bramlett is a fair singer but lacks Nicks' potent individuality and though Burnette and Mason wing some crafted Buckingham-type guitar flourishes, they lack Buckingham's dramatic eccentricity. Yet the magic remains on Christine McVie's songs; the keyboardist's beautiful "I Do" and "All Over Again," awash with wistful vocals and lush harmonies, are worthy of any classic Mac album. Mick Fleetwood actually closes TIME "singing" the Bob Geldof-like spoken reverie "These Strange Times." SKU: 1005028

It's Me Again
Personnel include: Tweet (vocals); Rell, Tashawna (vocals); Missy Elliott (rap vocals); John "Jubu" Smith, Charlie Bereal (guitar); Craig Brockman (keyboards). Producers: Craig Brockman; Tweet; Missy Elliott. Recording information: The Hit Factory, Criteria, Miami, Florida. While she was initially presented to the world as a protege of Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Timbaland, Charlene "Tweet" Keys immediately proved herself no mere follower, with the delectable and diverse debut SOUTHERN HUMMINGBIRD. On IT'S ME AGAIN, Tweet confirms her independence with a remarkably adventurous record that is smoothly seductive and giddily fun at the same time. Here Tweet creates clever, original, andmoving songs that straddle the line somewhere between neo-soul and modern mainstream R&B, wrapping her sweet-and-sultry voice around each tune with wicked effect. And, of course, having Elliott's able, artful production on most songs certainly doesn't hurt. After the intro track, IT'S ME AGAIN cuts to the impressive single "Turn Da Lights Out," featuring wispy vocals backed by a captivating, crackling vinyl backdrop. Hip-hop, jazz, and R&B are mixed flawlessly on "Could It Be," a darkly beautiful ballad sung with Rell. On "You," Tweet drops wildly inventive lines of heartbreak over a breakbeat interpolation of Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" for a starkly inventive and thoroughly catchy song. By then, it's clear that Tweet is not your ordinary R&B chanteuse, and IT'S ME AGAIN is definitely not your ordinary record. SKU: 6581846

D-12 World [PA]
D12 includes: Eminem, Proof, Bizarre, Swift, Kuniva, Kon Artis (rap vocals). D12: Eminem, Kon Artis, Proof, Swift , Bizarre, Kuniva (rap vocals). Additional personnel include: Obie Trice, B-Real (rap vocals). Producers: Eminem; Hi-Tek; Mr. Porter; Red Spyda; Dr. Dre. Recording information: 2004. D12's initial success was certainly aided by the high-profile presence of member Eminem, as well as lyrics that took his provocative topics to another twisted, incendiary level. However, D12 also consists of five other Detroit rappers, who were already established and respected before Eminem blew up larger than life. Their debut, DEVIL'S NIGHT, proved to be a witty, irreverent ride. On the follow-up album's mischievous first single, "My Band," the group hilariously (and self-deprecatingly) dissects Slim Shady, its greatest blessing and curse, while revealing an array of skills on the mic. D12 WORLD should put to rest any dubious notions about the collective. These are six like-minded guys with lightning-quick intellects to match their warped thoughts. "Just Like U" is a deft combination of whimsy and dark brutality, as crew member Bizarre gives "advice" to a child, playfully parodying similar songs by otherrappers ("Nas gonna probably hate me/When Mos Def hear this, he probably gonna suffocate me"). However, when they do get serious, as on "Good Die Young," a tribute to former D12 member Bugz (who was shot and killed in 1999) and other fallen friends, the result is achingly sincere, revealing a group that can be both crass and conscientious. Best Of New Order, The
New Order: Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Gillian Gilbert, Stephen Morris. Additional personnel: Andrew Robinson, Mac Quayle (programming). Producers: Arthur Baker, New Order, Martin Hannett, Stephen Hague. Engineers: Chris Nagle, Michael Johnson, Mike "Spike" Drake. Includes liner notes by Paul Morley. Covering their career from 1981-1993, the 17-track (THE BEST OF) NEW ORDER features at least one track from each of the band's albums, the odd single or two, anda handful of remixes. Focusing on their late-period work, there are a couple of overlaps with the 1987 collection, SUBSTANCE, but there's still more than enough additional material to justify it. Many of the band's high points are here: "Dreams Never End" from MOVEMENT, "Age of Consent" from POWER, CORRUPTION AND LIES, and "Love Vigilantes" from LOW LIFE, along with a remix of BROTHERHOOD'S "Bizarre Love Triangle". TECHNIQUE is represented by that album's standout track, "Run," as well as three others, while REPUBLIC gets three tracks, including the hit "Regret". Also included are remixed versions of "1963," "Round & Round," and the 1988 chart-topping version of "Blue Monday". For fans, the album also contains the hard to find "Touched by the Hand of God" and the previously single-only tracks, "Let's Go" and "World in Motion," an odd song written for the British soccer team as it entered into the 1990 World Cup. (THE BEST OF) NEW ORDER puts the spotlight on some of their finest moments, and is a fine introduction to the band. SKU: 1006412

Still Ghetto [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Jaheim, Mary J. Blige, Tha Rayne, Duganz, Taquane. Producers include: No I.D., Xtreme, KayGee, Malik Pendelton, Wesley Hogges. As the title indicates, STILL GHETTO pretty much picks up where Jaheim left off with his previous album GHETTO LOVE. Once again we find the singer deftly mixing street-real themes and hip-hop production techniques with slow-jam R&B tracks and soulful vocalizing. Despite hishard-guy front, Jaheim mostly comes off as a Love Man, as on "Put That Woman First" and his leather-and-lace deut with Mary J. Blige "The Beauty and the Thug." Even though STILL GHETTO finds him enough of a softie to have children's voices chiming in on his tunes, the street side will out; Jaheim may be one of the few contemporary singers capable of pulling off a romantic ode entitled "Me and My "B*tch," for example. Rumor And Sigh
Personnel: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, mandolin, hurdy-gurdy); Simon Nicol (guitar); Aly Bain (fiddle); Phillip Pickett (shawm, curtal, crumhorn); John Kirkpatrick (accordion, concertina);Mitchell Froom (piano, Hammond organ, portative organ, chamberlin, celeste, clavioline, echo harp); Jerry Scheff (bass); Jim Keltner, Mickey Curry (drums); Alex Acuna (percussion); Clive Gregson, Christine Collister (background vocals). Thompson's albums with Mitchell Froom in the producer's chair tended to be hit-or-miss affairs, and at times on Rumor And Sigh the singer's distinctive English vocal inflections and biting guitarwork are lost in Froom's kitchen-sink approach to production. Part of Froom's problem must have been coping with Thompson's own wild stylistic approach, ranging from acoustic ballads ('1952 Vincent Black Lightning'), through radio-friendly rock ('Keep Your Distance', 'You Dream Too Much'), to demonic rock 'n' rollers ('I Feel So Good', 'Mother Knows Best'). Rumor And Sigh also showcases Thompson's lyrical extremes, from the intense ('I Misunderstood', 'Mystery Wind') to the throwaway ('Don't Sit On My Jimmy Shands', 'Psycho Street'), via the wonderful narrative approach of '1952 Vincent Black Lightning'. Time And A Word (Expanded And Remastered)
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Peter Banks (guitar); Tony Kaye (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals); Bill Bruford (drums). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England in 1969-70. Originally released on Atlantic (8273). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Yes' second album is the last to feature original guitarist Peter Banks, and also the last to adhere to the debut's tendency toward elaborate covers of material by other '60s artists. The swirling, transmogrified version of Richie Havens' "No Oppoortunity Necessary" finds the band departing further from their source material than ever. A sweet, understated cover of Buffalo Springfield's "Everydays" provides some valuable contrast to the predominantly broad, sweeping arrangements. Tony Kaye's big, reedy Hammond sound is augmented by the string arrangements of Tony Cox, which push the band further toward the inevitable rock-classical fusion. On "Then" and "The Prophet," Jon Anderson takes early, tentative steps toward the spiritual/mystical/ecological mindset from which he would draw often for Yes' lyrics. The buoyant "Sweet Dreams" and the unabashed power ballad of the title track represent the remnants of the band's grounding in'60s pop. SKU: 1079862

Indigo Girls
Also available in a 3-pack with STRANGE FIRE and NOMADS INDIANS SAINTS. Indigo Girls: Emily Sailers, Amy Ray (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Luka Bloom (vocals); John Keane (electric & slide guitars, bass drum, shaker); Jai Winding (piano); John Van Tongeren, Dede Vogt, Kasim Sultan (bass); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Michael Stipe, R.E.M., Hothouse Flowers. Recorded at Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California; Can Am Studios, Tarzana, California; John Keane Studios, Athens, Georgia. This impressive major label debut (an earlier album was released independently) contains some of theIndigo Girls' finest compositions. INDIGO GIRLS swings between songs of love and philosophical questioning and has become the soundtrack of choice for many a college student. This album is the genuine article-made for staying up late and listening to over and over. INDIGO GIRLS cuts closer to the emotional bone than most pop/rock records, exploring the pain of becoming an adult with grace and depth that never lapse into pap or sentimentality. The wistful "Kid Fears" benefits from the vocal contributions of Michael Stipe. Standout songs include the students' anthem "Closer to Fine" and "Prince of Darkness," but there are many other fine tracks on this collection. The level of musicianship is unquestionably high. Vocalists Amy Ray and Emily Saliers achieve what one reviewer called "the most richly harmonious vocal pairing in pop music since Simon and Garfunkel." SKU: 1048251

Producers include: Narada Michael Walden; Jellybean, Kashif, Michael Masser. Engineers include: Darroll Gustamachio, Michael DeLugg, Dean Burt. Although she has now been eclipsed by younger urban R&B female stars, Houston will stand as the first to bring this type of clean soul music to the world. In the USA alone, this record stayed in the charts for four years, sold fifteen million copies and spent fourteen weeks ontop of the charts. It would be churlish to offer any criticism when most of the world would disagree. The immaculate production is by Jermaine Jackson, bank manager is Clive Davis and even the bathing suit on the back cover gets a credit. It is however, with all its slickness, an indispensable soul album SKU: 1004913

Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches
Happy Mondays: Shaun Ryder (vocals); Mark Day (guitar); Paul Davis (keyboards, programming); Paul Ryder (bass); Gary Whelan (drums); Bez. Additional personnel: Rowetta (vocals); Tony Castro (percussion); Simon Machan (programming). From the opening bars of this near-masterpiece, the Madchester generation was defined, celebrated, and perhaps laid to rest. Combining the best elements of their earlier releases--stolen riffs, howling in a whisper, being generally rude and obnoxious yet somehow entirely endearing, the Happy Mondays created the ultimate sex, drugs, and rock & roll package. With the acoustic strumming of the LaBelle rip-off "Kinky Afro," PILLS 'N' THRILLS' scene is set. In "God's Cop," Ryder pontificates about the ease of drug procurement, from his position as a rock star with a mobile phone. From here all hell breaks loose. There's the song for Donovan Leitch (complete with Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel's most famous lyric inserted for good measure), and "Bob's Your Uncle," the track for the ladies, where a foursome is conducted on Ecstasy. Right, Shaun. The highlight of PILLS'N'THRILLS (and perhaps of Happy Mondays' career in general) is the hit "Step On." Much more than an album for people who like some music with their drugs, PILLS'N'THRILLS is one of the coolest records ever made. SKU: 1006665

Blondie [Remastered]
Blondie: Deborah Harry (vocals); Chris Stein, Gary Valentine (guitar, bass); James Destri (piano, organ, synthesizer); Clement Burke (drums). Additional personnel: Ellie Greenwich, Micki Harris, Hilda Harris (background vocals). Producer: Richard Gottehrer. Reissue producer: Kevin Flaherty. Recorded at Plaza Sound Stuidos, New York, New York in August & September 1976. Originally released on Private Stock (2023) in January 1977, reissued on Chrysalis (1165) in September 1977. Includes liner notes by Mike Chapman. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. Recorded in 1976, Blondie's self-titled debut was part of the New York City/CBGB's crowd's initial salvo of punk/new wave, radically different from anything in the American mainstream at the time. While other CBGB scenemakers strove for either artiness (Television) or primitivism (Ramones), Blondie was always about pure pop, served with a healthy dose of irony. Its early-'60s rock & roll/girl-group roots were never so apparent as on this album--"In the Sun" sounds like a classic slice of sunny '60s West Coast pop, while "In the Flesh" reaches even further back for a '50s ballad feel. The sly lyrics, Debbie Harry's knowing delivery, and especially Jimmy Destri'sgloriously cheesy organ riffs make it apparent that revivalism was never Blondie's intention; the band simply used the past to hijack the punk present and lay claim to a new wave future. Over the next few years, countless groups would adopt the template laid down on the first couple of Blondie albums, with varying degrees of success, but, as this recording makes plain, Blondie did it first and best. 99.9 F
Personnel: Suzanne Vega (vocals, acoustic guitar); Richard Pleasance, Tchad Blake (electric guitar); Richard Thompson, David Hidalgo (guitar); Marc Shulman (bazouki); Sid Page, Joel Derouin (violin); Maria Newman (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Greg Smith(baritone saxophone); Mitchell Froom (keyboards); Michael Visceglia, Bruce Thomas, Jerry Scheff (bass, acoustic bass); Jerry Marotta (drums, percussion). Recorded at Dreamland Studios, Bearsville, New York; Sunset Sound Factory, Los Angeles, California; The Magic Shop, New York, New York. Suzanne Vega makes it clear from the cover inwards that she's up to something different on 99.9 F. Her fiery red and yellow photo-manipulated hair and bandaged finger stand in stark contrast to the orderly mysticism conveyed on the front of her previous release, DAYS OF OPEN HAND. Producer Mitchell Froom surrounds her strong songs with surprises in instrumentation, arrangement, and mix. The set opens smartly with a couple of selections that stand in stark contrast to the more traditional folk bearing of her previous output. By the third song, "In Liverpool," things break open to reveal a lush and popish heart. The title song is a dazzling groove of fuzzy and staccato guitar chords cast over layered percussion and her lilting vocal. An array of superb players, including drummer Jerry Marotta, guitarists David Hidalgo and Richard Thompson, and bass player Bruce Thomas accompany her. While it represented a bit of an unexpected turn at the time of its release in 1992, 99.9 F is one of Vega's finest albums. SKU: 5072245

High Land Hard Rain
Aztec Camera: Roddy Frame (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Bernie Clark (piano, organ); Campbell Owens (bass); Dave Ruffy (drums, percussion). HIGH LAND, HARD RAIN contains 3 tracks which originally appeared on the `Oblivious' EP. Formed in 1980 by teenage Glaswegian Roddy Frame, Aztec Camera captivated the UK music scene with their delightful 1983 debut album, HIGH LAND, HARD RAIN. Released after a string of singles and compilation tracks on obscure labels like Postcard and Les Disques du Crepuscule, HIGH LAND, HARD RAIN seemed to come out of nowhere, completely atodds with the synthesizers and haute couture then prevalent in the British charts. Strumming a completely unfashionable acoustic guitar and dressed down in similarly unpretentious clothes, the 18-year-old Frame delivered his heartfelt songs with a charming lack of guile and sincere, boyish enthusiasm. Filled with remarkable, captivating songs, including the singles "Oblivious" and "Walk Out to Winter" as well as the stirring "We Could Send Letters" and the hyperactive "The Boy Wonders," HIGH LAND, HARD RAIN is a timeless pop classic. Made In The Shade (Limited Edition) [Digipak]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Mick Taylor (guitar, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Mick Taylor, Ron Wood (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass guitar); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Bobby Keys (saxophone); Ian Stewart (piano). There is no shortage of Rolling Stones compilations on themarket. Some, like the three-disc SINGLES COLLECTION: THE LONDON YEARS, span great stretches of the band's career, while others, like BIG HITS (HIGH TIDE AND GREEN GRASS) focus on a specific era. MADE IN THE SHADE falls in the latter category by concentrating on the first four albums the band released on their own Rolling Stones Records label--STICKY FINGERS, EXILE ON MAIN STREET, GOATS HEAD SOUP, and IT'S ONLY ROCK & ROLL. At a mere 10 tracks, MADE IN THE SHADE doesn't attempt to offer any comprehensive sense of these albums. Instead it is a sampler, giving a quick, cursory overview of the Stones' early-1970s sound. Kicking off with the indelible guitar riff of "Brown Sugar," the collection struts and swaggers through edgy, bluesy grooves ("It's Only Rock & Roll," "Tumbling Dice") and ballads ("Wild Horses," "Angie"), throwing in "Bitch," one of the Stones' greatest--and most overlooked--rockers, for good measure. This satisfying blast of '70s Stones goodness was re-released in 2005 on Virgin with elegant new packaging and beautifully remastered sound. SKU: 6587213

Ella And Louis
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Buddy Rich(drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on August 16, 1956. Orginally released on Verve (4003). Includes liner notes by John McDonough. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Universal Music Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Records Master Edition series. An inspired collaboration, masterminded by producer Norman Granz. Both artists were riding high at this stage in their careers. Granz assembled a stellar quartet of Oscar Peterson (piano), Buddy Rich (drums), Herb Ellis (guitar) and Ray Brown (bass). Equally inspired was the choice of material, with the gruffness of Armstrong's voice blending like magic with Fitzgerald's stunningly silky delivery. Outstanding are Irving Berlin's "Cheek To Cheek" and "Isn't This A Lovely Day," and everything else works like a dream, with the golden star going to the Gershwin brothers' "They Can't Take That Away From Me." Gentle and sincere, this is deserving of a place in every home. SKU: 1032301

Producers: Tracy Chapman, David Kershenbaum. Recorded at Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California. There's nothing particularly fancy about Tracy Chapman's particular brand of folk-rock; she just blends the folk into the rock more appealingly than most anyone out there. Her music has enough verve to have vaulted her out of obscurity twice. Her fifth jaunt, TELLING STORIES, continues her charming consistency with an alluring set of picture-perfect tunes. The bouncy title track opens the album with a clever circular play on a deceptively simple line, "there's a fiction in the space between...," which makes it clear from the start that Tracy remembers the value of a good pop song. Good pop songs abound on TELLING STORIES, from the country-rock of "Less Than Strangers" to the singer-songwriter folk of "Unsung Psalm" to the upbeat dance of "It's OK." Between her acclaimed debut and TELLING STORIES, very little about Chapman has changed, which is both comforting and go |
