Animosity [PA]
Sevendust: Lajon Witherspoon (vocals); Clint Lowery (guitar, background vocals); John Connolly (guitar); Vince Hornsby (bass); Morgan Rose (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Luis Resto (keyboards); Justin Walden, Blumpy (keyboards, programming); Ben Grosse (programming); Aaron Lewis (background vocals). Engineers include: Ben Grosse, Adam Barber, Blumpy. Recorded at Tree Sound, Atlanta, Georgia; Trans Continental, Orlando, Florida; Parc, The MixRoom, Burbank, California; Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. Hitting their stride on their third release, Georgia natives Sevendust learned to channel their aggressive emotion in a more streamlined fashion. The result is their strongest material to date. "Praise" is a radio-friendly track that stands above the nu-metal pack. "Trust" and "Crucified," both brutal and melodic, are vehicles for vocalist Lajon Witherspoon's expanded range. Producer Ben Grosse (Fuel, Filter) brings out the maximum amount of impact from the powerful quintet. The somber "Xmas Day" and "Shine" are both standouts, and show that while the band has matured, they are still metal to the bone. You'll want to turn up the bass on the bottom-heavy crunchers "Damaged" and "Beautiful." After working out their kinks and becoming a tighter unit via massive touring, Sevendust seems ready to lead the heavy music brigade. SKU: 1083960

You're The Top (The Love Songs Of Cole Porter)
Personnel: Bobby Short (vocals, piano); Jay Berliner, Howard Alden (guitar); Jack Stuckey, Jay Brandford (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone); Danny Bank (flute, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone); Doug Lawrence (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Loren Schoenberg (tenor saxophone); John Eckert (trumpet, flugelhorn); Tony Kadleck, Virgil Jones (trumpet); Bobby Pring, Eddie Bert (trombone); Frank Tate (bass); Klaus Suonsaari (drums). Engineers: Jack Renner, Robert Friedrich, Mark Partis. Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios from October 13-16, 1998; Avatar Studios on November 9 & 29, 1998; and Sound On Sound, New York, New York on January 22 & 25, 1999. Includes liner notes by Robert Kimball. YOU'RE THE TOP: LOVE SONGS OF COLE PORTER was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. Bobby Short is to Cole Porter as Joao Gilberto will always be to Jobim, the man most capable of presenting the composer's work in a milieu concordant with the one in which it was created. Both men hail from Indiana, but both journeyed to New York City to pursue the sophisticate's life through music. Despite the misleading cover text, this album was not recorded at Manhattan's famed Cafe Carlyle, where pianist/singer Short and his trio have reigned supreme for decades, singing Porter and more in a virtual one-man crusade to keep the tradition alive. Instead of his usual trio, Shortis accompanied by the subtly swinging big band of Loren Schoenberg, which adds just the right mix of pageantry and sensuality to Short's performances. As ever, Short's voice is the perfect combination of studied decadence, high-society pomp-and-circumstance, and gracefully jazzy emotional commitment. The pure, high tones that peek through the rough, sandpapery edges of his unique voice are the pearl in the oyster on this albu, which proves that elegance and sophistication are never out of date. Keepers Of The Castle (The Best Of The Four Tops 1972-1978)
The Four Tops: Levi Stubbs, Renaldo Obie Benson, Lawrence Payton, Abdul Duke Fakir. Producers: Steve Barri, Norman Harris, Dennis Lambert, Brian Potter, Lawrence Payton, Jr. Compilation producer: Andy McKaie Recorded between 1972 and 1978. Includes liner notes by David Nathan. All tracks have been digitally remastered by Erick Labson. A first-rate anthology of the Tops work after their initial departure from their home at Motown Records. The genius production and songwriting team of Holland/Dozier/Holland, who had provided the group with so many of their classictracks, had already moved on, so the Tops' split from Motown wasn't as radical as it may have seemed. In any case, the group scored several hits at their new berth on Dunhill/ABC, including "Catfish," (one of the few written by a member of the group), the memorable "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)," and the braggadocious "Are You Man Enough," from the film SHAFT IN AFRICA. TNT
Tortoise: Dan Bitney,John Herndon, Douglas McCombs, John McEntire, David Pajo, Jeff Parker. Additional personnel: Julie Liu (violin); Popahna Brandes (cello); Caitlin Horsmon (bassoon); Rob Mazurek (cornet); Sara P. Smith (trombone). Recorded between November 1996 & November 1997. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Electronics permeate all twelve tracks here, adding textural shadings that seemed like foreign turf for the band when it first came together as an all-star crew of Chicago indie multi-instrumentalists in the early '90s. Cluster, Mouse On Mars and drum 'n' bass now hold equal footing on Tortoise's soundstage, beautifying the peripheral space while the quintet (Dave Pajo plays on the album, but is no longer a full-time member) improvises over, riffs on, and generally recontextualizes various jazzy, "out" musical styles of the last thirty years. Generally, TNT's compositions flow out of the Ennio Morricone vibe that has always been present in their work. Lush, southwestern-desert guitar lines build the axis. The inevitable vibes provide both rhythmic undertow and curt, melodic counterpoint. Electronic studio trickery brightens the various sonic corners. Tortoise also has an instinct for transforming some of these beautiful abstractions into catchy head-nodders. Case in point: "In Sara, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven There Were Women and Men," where acoustic guitar and House-lite beat create the kind of '70s dance groove you wouldn't think "serious" musicians knew anything about. Guilty
Personnel includes: Barbra Streisand (vocals); Barry Gibb (vocals, acoustic guitar); Richard Tee (electric guitar, keyboards); Cornell Dupree, Lee Ritenour (guitar); Whit Snider (baritone saxophone); Ken Faulk (trumpet); Jerry Peel (French horn); Peter Graves (trombone); George Bitzer (piano, synthesizer); David Hungate, Harold Cowart (bass); Steve Gadd, Bernard Lupe (drums); Joe Lala (percussion); Denise Maynelli, Myrna Matthews, Marti McCall (background vocals). Producers include: Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten, Karl Richardson. Recorded at Criteria, Middle Ear, Miami, Florida; Sound Labs Inc., Hollywood, California; Mediasound Studios, New York, New York. Released in September 1980, GUILTY was Barbra Streisand's best-selling album todate, moving in excess of 20 million units. It is Streisand's THRILLER and arguably her best recorded work. This is largely due to producer Barry Gibb, who developed the songs especially for Barbra, and whose vocal presence is felt throughout the record. "Guilty" (a duet with Gibb) is a mid-tempo smash that blends the superstars' vocals to create pop perfection. "Woman In Love" topped the charts for three weeks and features the trademark "chipmunk-like" Gibb on background vocals. "Run Wild" is an uptempo number showing that there's no filler here. "Promises" is a mid-tempo track that sounds custom-made for radio airplay. "The Love Inside" features excellent keyboard arrangements while "What Kind Of Fool" (another duet with Gibb) is a ballad that proves Barbra and Barry were meant to sing together. Her vocals on the fast-paced, optimistic "Never Give Up" reveal such a calm demeanor that you can almost picture the relative ease with which this record was produced. This album is a perfect 10, two thumbs up, and proof of what can be achieved when talent and technology come together. SKU: 1004995

Indianola Mississippi Seeds
Personnel: B. B. King (vocals, guitar, piano); Hugh McCracken, Joe Walsh (guitar); Paul Harris (piano); Carole King, Leon Russell (keyboards); Bryan Garofalo, Gerald Jemmott (bass); Russ Kunkel, Herb Lovelle (drums); Sherlie Matthews, Merry Clayton, Clydie King, Venetta Fields (background vocals). Engineers: Bill Szymczyk, Gary Kellgren, Joe Zagarino. Recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California and The Hit Factory, New York. INDIANOLA MISSISSIPPI SEEDS was King's first album on ABC. The years 1969 and 1970 were busy ones for B.B. King. When he wasn't playing one of his 300-plus gigs, King was in the studio laying down tracks that included "The Thrill Is Gone," his only Top 20 hit. 1970's INDIANOLA MISSISSIPPI SEEDS was a record that fit in well with the musical climate of the time. Up and coming artists such as Carole King and Leon Russell contributed their talents to these predominantly B.B. King-penned numbers. The female King plays piano throughout, giving "You're Still My Woman" an Aretha Franklin flavor whereas "Until I'm Dead And Cold" is infused with a sanctified air thanks to her playing and the inclusion of a brassy horn section. No slouch on the eighty-eights himself, Russell (along with a then unknown Joe Walsh) provides funky accompaniment on "Ask Me No Questions" and the instrumental "King's Special." The blues legend himself lays Lucille aside long enough to give himself solo piano accompaniment on the minute and a half "Nobody Love Me But My Mother." Leon Russell's biggest contribution to INDIANOLA is of his oft-recorded "Hummingbird." Along with playing piano, the musically giftedOkie also conducts a string section and gospel-inspired chorus of female back-up singers that includes Merry Clayton. SKU: 1002337

Make Up The Breakdown
Hot Hot Heat: Dustin Hawthorne, Steve Bays, Paul Hawley, Dante DeCaro. OK, name a band of Canadians with ska/punk/New Wave overtones, snappy lyrics and a catchy way with a tune. If you were thinking Barenaked Ladies, think again--Hot Hot Heat are all of the above, but with the added advantage of Steve Bays's patented Ray Davies-in-a-blender hiccupped vocals and a musical edge given extra depth by producer Jack Endino's nuanced production. There are echoes of '80s skinny-tie pop here, to be sure, but the combination of quirkiness, energy, and wit most obviously recalls British new wavers XTC and their particular brand of multi-layered new wave/art-rock. MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN, despite being Hot Hot Heat's first full-length album, is a bright, assured blast of fresh air that's at its dayglo best on tracks such as the tricky pop of "Naked in the City Again" and the punky "Bandages." But the strong hint that Hot Hot Heat have more to offer than your everyday retro-wavers is contained in the wiry guitar sounds of "Save Us S.O.S." and the atmospheric closer "Cairo," as wellas in the off-kilter rhythms and smart, wry lyrics that pop up throughout. Dondestan [Remastered]
DONDESTAN (REVISITED) is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. This is a completely remixed, resequenced and digitally remastered version of Robert Wyatt's 1991 release, DONDESTAN. Another gorgeous set of poetically articulated and socio-politically motivated songs sung in Robert Wyatt's inimitable voice. His is a voice that melds beautiful fragility with assertive phrasing and shifts in register. Half of the songs this time feature words written by Wyatt's wife, Alfreda Benge. The music is again written and played by Wyatt himself, continuing an approach first shown off on OLD ROTTENHAT. This record proves just how well the players on his early classics ROCK BOTTOM and RUTH IS STRANGER THAN RICHARD understood and were able to play as if they were extensions of the composer's own mind. Whether workingwith an ensemble or building the tracks himself, Robert Wyatt has created a most unique and compelling musical world. DONDESTAN is yet another essential title in his catalog. This version is amended as "Revisited," owing to the fact that it was afforded some additional mixing time (which only subtly changes the sound), and also includes a filmed interview with Wyatt. Steady On
Personnel includes: Shawn Colvin (vocals, guitar); Bruce Hornsby, T-Bone Wolk, Rick Marottan, Soozie Tyrell, Bob Telson, Suzanne Vega. Strong vocals, consistently well-crafted lyrics, accomplished musicianship, andforceful melodies comprise this impressive debut by Shawn Colvin. From the highly original opening title track, which features some of Shawn's most silky, fluid vocals, the listener is taken through a collection of first-rate songs, each building on the emotion and musical power of the last. Highlights include "Diamond In The Rough," "Shotgun Down The Avalanche" and "Something To Believe In." The songs show off Shawn's diverse influences; they are equal parts folk, pop, country and rock. Using a strong backbeat and a heavy lyrical side, Colvin expresses both angst and affirmation as she explores the paradoxes of love and relationships. This 1989 release won the "Best Folk Album" Grammy, but it is not a folk album in the traditional sense. In fact, it was one of the year's best rock albums. Shawn's breathy vocals and shimmering timbre, sharp rock arrangements, and perceptively astute lyrics bring this outstanding album to a high level of originality and quality. STEADY ON, Shawn Colvin forges ahead, breaking new musical ground. SKU: 1016970

Still Blazing
Personnel includes: Capleton, Ian Forester (guitar); Courtney Panton (keyboards). Producers include: C. Bailey, Norman "Bullpus" Bryan, Stuart "African Star" Brown, Blacka Dread, Leroy "Sugar Roy" Moore. Engineers include: Michael "Finga" Green, Roland McDermott, Paul Daley. STILL BLAZING was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album. Capleton spent most of the '90s espousing his deep Rastafarian beliefs although he ended up clocking time on Def Jam working with rappers like Q-Tip and Method Man in courting a crossover audience. STILL BLAZIN' finds the raspy-voiced singer in the midst of playing to his core dancehall audience who've stayed with him even when he gave up singing sexually explicit material in favor of music of a more conscientious nature. Typical of his ever present piousness are songs like the soaring duet with fellow dancehall legend Luciano "Hail King Selassie," dub-basted Glen Washington team-up "Jah Is Gonna Work It Out," and vibrant "Behold," featuring family unit Morgan Heritage. STILL BLAZIN' finds Capleton still carrying the spark ofinspired musical creativity tempered by steadfast beliefs. SKU: 1070105

TALKING BOOK reaped the benefits of both, as two songs rose to number one on the pop charts ("Superstition" and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"), and his songwriting and singing continued to push the boundaries of pop music. In A Silent Way [SACD]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Joe Zawinul (electric piano); Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock (electric piano); John McLaughlin (guitar);Dave Holland (bass); Tony Williams (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on February 18, 1969. Includes liner notes by Frank Glenn. With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation. Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of color and counterpoint. The juxtaposition of groove and impressionistic drone movements creates the inner tension in each of the extended pieces--Miles' "Shhh/Peaceful" and Zawinul's "In A Silent Way/It's About Time." Newcomer John McLaughlin's lyric, sitar-like guitar sets a serene mood on "Shhh," as bassist Dave Holland and drummer Williams essay a pulsating vamp. Miles' open horn is nuanced and graceful, combining long notes and cracked speech-like tones into one of his classic melodic statements, followed by McLaughlin's dancing figures and Wayne Shorter's chanting soprano. The title tune is a dark, dreamy, aquatic tone poem that breaks into an irresistable blues vamp. IN A SILENT WAY is one of Miles most sublimely beautiful, enduring creations. SKU: 1078647

Land Of The Rough
Debut album from hotly-tipped, incendiary Glasgow quartet whose style is a mixture of retro influences, from classic blues and 70s rock to psychedelia and three-chord punk. Wide Open Space
Dixie Chicks: Natalie Maines (vocals); Emily Erwin (vocals, dobro, banjo, acoustic guitar); Martie Seidel (vocals, fiddle, mandolin). Additional personnel: Billy Joe Walker, Jr., Paul Worley (acoustic & electric guitars); Mark Casstevens, Billy Crain (acoustic guitar); George Marinelli, Tommy Nash (electric guitar); Lloyd Maines, TonyPaoletta (steel guitar); Matt Rollings (Hammond B-3 organ, piano); Bobby Charles, Jr., Michael Rhodes (bass); Greg Morrow (drums); Tom Roady (congas, shaker, tambourine). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. WIDE OPEN SPACES won the 1999 Grammy for Best Country Album. Dixie Chicks were nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "There's Your Trouble" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The Dixie Chicks' WIDE OPEN SPACES is flavored with tight-knit harmonies and acoustic instrumentation within the center of very tastefully understated arrangements. Their own acoustic underpinnings of fiddle, guitar, banjo and dobro are complimented and raised up by Paul Worley and Blake Chancey's respectful and organic production. This music is decorated with antique store furnishings, not the usual gaudy, regurgitated guitar licks and cheap generic production tricks. The trio is propelled by their delightful vocals and the very natural and easy country sway that the producer and the fine accompanying musicians have created. SKU: 1001027

No Way
Run On: Sue Garner (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Alan Licht (vocals, guitar, chord organ, cowbell); Rick Brown (vocals, synthesizer, marimba, drums, programming); Katie Gentile (violin, organ, cowbell, background vocals). Addtional personnel: Casey Rice (sleighbells). Recorded at Idful Studios, Chicago, Illinois in October 1996. The second fell-length album by Run On was made after a personnel change. Though the core lineup remained bassist/vocalist Sue Garner, drummer Rick Brown, and guitarist/vocalist Alan Licht, violinist/organist Katie Gentile replaced keyboardist David Newgarden. As always, the group's songs are full of delightful twists and turns, as rampant experimentation is wedded to relatively down-to-earth songs. "Something Sweet" opens NO WAY with a fanfare. "As Good as New" starts out like a windup toy before transforming into a hypnotic rave-up. The folkishguitar and marimba of "Road" give way to a brief display of tight-fisted rhythms in "Days Away," only to disappear into the plaintive body of the song, rendered by Garner's lone voice and an accompanying organ. Run On has created a distinct sonic signature based on surprise juxtapositions, often managing to sound simultaneously orchestrated and intuitive. SKU: 1007608

Denials Delusions And Decisions
Personnel: Jaguar Wright (vocals); Pino Palladino (guitar, bass); Randy Bowland (guitar); Gregory Teperman, Igor Szwec, Emma Kummrow (violin); Davis Barnett (viola); Larry Gold (cello); James Poyser, Scott "Tuffjew" Storch, James Gray (keyboards); Leonard "Hub" Hubbard, Jermaine Childs (bass); Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (drums). Producers include: James Poyser, Scott Storch, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson. Recorded at The Studio, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sexy, slinky, sensuous, and probably many other adjectives beginning with "s," Jaguar Wright (one hates to think of the comments in the school playground) here stakes her claim as an heir to the long line of tough, street-smart female chanteuses that stretches from Bessie Smith to Mary J Blige. If the material on DENIALS, DELUSIONS AND DECISIONS is any indication, she should have no trouble assuming her rightful position. What's on offer here is a variety of smartly-produced R&B, savvy enough to make all the right musical references (witness the Southern-flavored Fender Rhodes at the top of "Country Song") in all the right places. Wright often recalls her namesake Betty Wright and a youthful Millie Jackson, especially in her spoken asides, and the overall feel ofDENIALS is undoubtedly '70s retro. Even occasional nods at contemporary R&B, such as "Ain't Nobody Playin'," are given added depth by Wright's deep soul readings, and when she recalls her roots in "Lineage," it's obvious both where she gets the grit in her voice and that she's here for the long haul. Minute By Minute
The Doobie Brothers: Patrick Simmons (vocals, guitar); Michael McDonald (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Jeffrey Porter (guitar); Tiran Porter (bass, background vocals); Keith Knudsen (drums, background vocals); John Hartman (drums). Additional personnel: Herb Pedersen (banjo); Byron Berline (fiddle); Norton Buffalo (harmonica); Andrew Love (saxophone); Ben Cauley (trumpet); Lester Abrams (electric piano); Bill Payne (synthesizer); Bobby LaKind (congas background vocals); Tom Johnston, Nicolette Larson, Rosemary Butler (background vocals). Recorded at Warner Brothers Studios, North Hollywood, California. The Doobie's biggest commercial success coincided with Michael McDonald's emergence as the leader of the band. His brilliant brand of sophisticated, keyboard-driven pop soul, as exemplified by the title track and the huge hit "What a Fool Believes," was instantly identifiable and almost impossible to resist. There are tracks here that look back to the Doobie's earlier days as a biker boogie band, in particular "Don't Stop to Watch the Wheels," and "Steamer Lane Breakdown," a country song reminiscent of the Byrds' "Nashville West." But the sound here is mostly McDonald's. SKU: 1009254
