Shania Twain
Personnel: Shania Twain (vocals); Billy Joe Walker (acoustic & electric guitars); Chris Leuzinger (acoustic guitar); Steve Gibson, Reggie Young (electric guitar); Allan Frank Estes, Mark Casstevens, John Willis (guitar); Sonny Garrish (steel guitar); Terry McMillan (harmonica, percussion); Jelly Roll Johnson (harmonica); Costo Davis (keyboards, synthesizer); David Briggs, Gary Prim (keyboards); Mike Brignardello, Glenn Worf (bass); Larrie Londin, Paul Leim (drums); Anthony Martin, Ronny Sciafe, John Wesley Ryles, Cindy Walker, Dennis Wilson, Curtis Young (background vocals). Recorded at Music Mill Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. When Shania Twain's self-titled debut came out in 1993, it was impossible to predict the impact she would soon have, not only on country music but on the pop world as well. She hadn't yet hooked up with producer/hubby Mutt Lange, so there's less pop crossover material here than on her subsequent releases. Instead, mainstream country is the order of the day: romanticballads colored by appropriately sorrowful-sounding steel guitar, and perky up-tempo numbers capable of inducing a line-dance at a moment's notice. Twain's emergence as a bared-navel sex symbol was still in the future, so there's less of a focus on the randy, sensual material that would characterize albums like COME ON OVER. "God Ain't Gonna Getcha For That" explores the mores of the honky-tonk lifestyle, while "There Goes the Neighborhood" is a chronicle of the domestic carnage that occurs around the narrator. Many changes would occur in the years to come, but SHANIA TWAIN still sports the lovely yet brassy voice and carefully constructed tunes that the singer's fans have come to expect from their heroine. Hamilton Ironworks
Full performer name: John Hartford & The Hartford Stringband. Personnel: John Hartford, Bob Carlin, Mike Compton, Larry Perkins, Chris Sharp. HAMILTON IRONWORKS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. These are the last studio recordings made by folk legend John Hartford, who died in the spring of 2001. The set is imbued with the spirit of a man summing up his love of music and paying final tribute to his musical influences. The small ensemble includes Hartford's longtime cohort Bob Carlin on banjo as well as bass player Larry Perkins, mandolinist Mike Compton and guitarist Chris Sharp. Hartford fiddles and introduces the selections with grace and wit--everything you'd want from either a fine performer or an engaging teacher. What makes these performances so resilient and compelling is the casual ease Hartford displays, belying a lifetime of studying and internalizingthis music. The album is warmly recorded with a clarity and presence that make the musicians sound like they could be standing right in your living room. SKU: 1068752

Best Of Sade, The [Remastered]
Sade: Sade Adu (vocals); Stuart Matthewman (guitar, saxophone); Andrew Hale (keyboards); Paul S. Denman (bass). Additional personnel includes: Leroy Osbourne, Jake Jacas (vocals); Gordon Hunte (guitar); Tony Pleeth (cello); Terry Bailey, Gordon Matthewman (trumpet); Pete Beachill (trombone); Dave Early, Martin Ditcham (drums, percussion); Paul Cooke, Trevor Murrell (drums); Karl Vanden Bossche (percussion). Producers: Robin Millar, Ben Rogan, Mike Pela, Sade, Hein Hoven. Engineers: Mike Pela, Ben Rogan. Digitally remastered by Tom Coyne (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Nigerian vocalist Sade Adu has carved out a cosmpolitan niche for herself over the past decade, gathering together elements of cool jazz, samba, reggae, funk and pop all under the pastoral umbrella of her suede-and-velvet voice. A pop stylist with a musical universe all her own, Sade has endured and matured over the past decade, seemingly unaffected by changes in taste and fashion--a movement unto herself. As her most recent single (Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone To Love" from the PHILADELPHIA soundtrack) illustrates, Sade's coy caressing voice speaks more of commitment and trust, of relationships in flux ("Nothing Can Come Between Us") than of theheat of the moment: from the the coy duplicity of "Smooth Operator" to the positive reinforcement of "The Sweetest Taboo" and the sweet ambiguities of "Love Is Stronger Than Pride." Outside of Sade's mentholated vocals, it is the serene, understated quality of her arrangements that lend THE BEST OF SADE its classic touch of elegance. Delicate washes of percussion and acoustic guitar, the coiled intensity of Stewart Matthewman's tenor saxophone counterpoint, Andrew Hale's suave, elusive keyboard colorations, and Paul S. Denman's discretely dancing bass provide a maximum of smoke, but precious little fire. The simmering aftermath of Sade's music is as deceptively powerful as a mixed drink: smooth and sweet going down, but with a surprisingly potent kick. SKU: 1046724

Suede
Suede: Brett Anderson (vocals); Bernard Butler (guitar, piano); Mat Osman (bass); Simon Gilbert (drums). Additional personnel: Caroline Barnes, Shelley Van Loen (violin); Lynne Baker (viola); Trevor Burley (cello); Simon Clarke (tenor & baritone saxophones); Ed Buller (keyboards, synthesizer); Phil Overhead (percussion). Suede played intellectual high jinks with this, their debut album, employing provocative lyrics, a weighty, unknowing sexuality and the pointed angst of troubled teenagers theworld over. The clever lure of their androgynous artwork combined tellingly with Brett Anderson's teasing flamboyance and dedicated (some might say studied) David Bowie air. However, they would have remained a one trick pony were it not for their stirring ability to put together some unashamedly great singles and adapt a host of subtle mood swings and arrangements that took Anderson's vocals to soaring new heights. Heat Light And Sound
Eliza Carthy is the daughter of guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson. HEAT, LIGHT AND SOUND is her first solo release. Personnel includes: Eliza Carthy (fiddle). Eliza Carthy's solo debut followed a collaboration with NancyKerr and an album with her band, The Kings Of Calicutt. The latter remained on the shelf until after the 1996 release of HEAT LIGHT & SOUND. All the featured tunes are English, something that doubtless pleased her parents Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, as both were champions of the genre at a time when it was overshadowed by Celtic music. This delightful set, which is entirely traditional save for one tentative original, includes a jaunty tale of deception, "Cold, Wet & Rainy Night," and a fine version of "10,000 Miles" appended by a morris jig. Other highlights are remarkably assured deliveries of two of the great Child ballads, "Sheath & Knife" and "Clark Saunders," the latter sung unaccompanied. SKU: 4122852

Abbey Road
ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69). The Beatles: Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); George Harrison (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, percussion). After the laborious disorganization and infighting that characterized early 1969's LET IT BE sessions (as famously captured on film), the fractious four were willing to let George Martin take the reins and to work with him as a cohesive unit for the much more succinct production of their (and the decade's) swan song, ABBEY ROAD. The superb performances make the album an artistic high point for all members of the group. Paul McCartney inspired the suite of songs that begins with "You Never Give Me Your Money." Often thought of as two long medleys, the songs that fill most of the second half of ABBEY ROAD segue seamlessly into one another, but are programmed as separate CD tracks. George Harrison had his first A-side ona Beatles' single ("Something"); John Lennon contributed a pair of heavy rockers ("Come Together" and "I Want You"); and Ringo Starr's "Octopus's Garden" was a favorite with children. Geometrid
Looper: Stuart David, Karn David, Ronnie Black, Scott Twynholm. Additional personnel: Karla Valderama, Jodi (vocals). Leaving Belle & Sebastian on the eve of mainstream popularity was a brave move by onetime bass player Stuart David. As the driving force behind Looper, he's proved that he has a lot of his own ideas to offer. THE GEOMETRID takes up where his debut album UP A TREE left off. The slinky trip-hop atmosphere is still intact, but this time the production is meatier, possibly due to Looper's mutation into a permanent four-piece band. Kicking off in energetic style with the house-influenced "Mondo 77," THE GEOMETRID is something of a celebration of technology. "Modem Song"tells the story of an email from a Japanese friend, with words set to the atonal bleeps of a modem. "Tomorrow's World" and "My Robot" deal with the gap between futuristic fantasies and real life. Elsewhere there's gentle summer pop ("These Things"), and the '60s-inspired funkiness of "Money Hair." David plays the sensitive outsider card throughout, with a mixture of charm and playfulness. SKU: 1032453

Lucky
Personnel includes: Melissa Etheridge (vocals, acoustic guitar); James Harrah, Eric Schermerhorn, Mark Browne (electric guitar); John Shanks, Blues Saraceno (guitar); Rami Jaffee (keyboards, background vocals); Jamie Muhoberac, David Cole (keyboards); Rick Hopkins (organ); Mark Brown, Paul Bushell (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums, tambourine, percussion); Matt Laug (drums, percussion); Josh Preese (drums); David Cole (programming); Jay Bellarose (loops); Bernie Barlow, Kipp Lennon, Brandi Carlile (background vocals). Sixteen years after charging out of the gate with an attention-grabbing debut album, full of heart-on-sleeve singer/songwriter introspection mixed with full-throttlerock, Melissa Etheridge sticks firmly to her guns on 2004's LUCKY. While pop melodicism abounds, and many of the lyrics mine Etheridge's introspective streak, there's no shortage of wide-screen rock & roll abandon here. The intro to "Secret Agent' might have you thinking you've stumbled onto an Alice In Chains outtake by mistake, and "Giant"--seemingly a gay-rights empowerment statement from out lesbian Etheridge--is powered by crushingly heavy guitar-and-drum figures. Along the way, there's also acoustic-oriented balladry ("Meet Me in the Dark") and some bluesy/funky grooves ("Kiss Me"), but whatever the stylistic mode, Etheridge's raspy, emotive wail and nakedly soul-baring lyrics are at the forefront. Exit Planet Dust
The Chemical Brothers: Tom Rowlands, Ed Simons. Additional personnel: Tim Burgess, Beth Orton (vocals); Seggs (bass). Engineers: Steve "Dub" Jones, Dan Zamani, Tim Holmes. Principally recorded at Orinoco Studios and Da Da Studios, London, England between August and November 1994. The Chemical Brothers were formerly known as the Dust Brothers. The name change seems particularly appropriate, as many observers viewing the disc's cover would be hard-pressed to perceive this as anything remotely electronic-based. Rave faves and flamboyant studio techies in their nativeEngland, the Brothers may be the '90s inheritors of Adrian Sherwood and his On-U Sound legacy. EXIT PLANET DUST is a record concerned more with the urban jungle than space-time continuums, although there's no shortage of tripped-out effects, stereo panning, reverb, and a healthy amount of studio gimcrackery. Mobile fidelity is the nucleus here, so anyone expecting ambience need look elsewhere. With this record, one of the first to break so-called "electronica" mainstream and on Main Street, USA, The Brothers have assimilated so many dancefloor ideologies that their stance within the "big beat" genre should ultimately get them through the next musical revolution--and beyond. To many, this is the possible future of pop: Spock & roll, anyone? SKU: 1004740

Seven Swans
Personnel: Sufjan Stevens (various instruments); Daniel Smith (vocals, bass); Elin Smith, Megan Smith (vocals); Andrew Smith, David Smith (drums). Recorded at the New Jerusalem Rec Room, Clarksboro, New Jersey. Multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens made a couple of records that slipped under the radar before his third, the astoundingly lush post-rock concept album GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN, gained him critical attention and cult status. Seemingly bent on not repeating himself, Stevens scales down MICHIGAN's grandeur to a minimalist palette for SEVEN SWANS. Where the previous album was instrumentally comparable to Tortoise or Stereolab, SEVEN SWANS is practically lo-fi, basedaround simply strummed acoustic guitars, banjo, organ, and hushed vocals. It's more akin to laconic Americana troubadours like Will Oldham and Iron & Wine, though no amount of sonic slimming-down can disguise Stevens's knack for crafty arrangements and accessibly quirky songs. Like-minded spirit Daniel Smith of the Danielson Family produced, and other Family members provide accompaniment that's considerably more structured than their own free-wheeling recordings. Unplugged In New York
Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dave Grohl (vocals, bass, drums); Krist Novoselic (guitar, accordion, bass). Additional personnel: Cris Kirkwood (acoustic guitar, bass); Pat Smear, Curt Kirkwood (acoustic guitar); Lori Goldston (cello). Recorded live at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York on November 18, 1993. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK is part of MTV's "Unplugged" series. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. What is ultimately so sad about Kurt Cobain taking his own life is that he was so giving to others, constantly campaigning for the artists who influenced him. Cobain breathed new life into the Raincoats' career (who thanked him on their latest EP), brought a wider audience to Eugenius' pop genius, and proved there was grunge in Seattle before the '90s by covering a Wipers song on INCESTICIDE. The same reverential awe seeps through every minute of the UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK performance, released nearly a year after its recording in November 1993. Cobain's originals, from the wrenching "All Apologies" to the numbing "Dumb," exempify his rare gift of saying so much with deceptively simple chords and melodies. His choice of covers displays influences as diverse as David Bowie and the Meat Puppets, and possibly most surprising, Leadbelly--included is a ferocious version of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" Hot Rocks Vol.1 1964-1971 [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Brian Jones (guitar, background vocals); Mick Taylor (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Producers: Andrew Loog Oldham, The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Miller. When it comes to the rock & roll verities, this is about as elemental as it gets. The Rolling Stones are one of the most important bands in rock & roll history, and HOT ROCKS is a two-disc distillation of their veryfinest work. If you want to lay claim to being more seminal than that, your name had better start with Chuck and end with Berry. All the essential Stones tunes are here, from their early R&B days ("Time Is on My Side," "Heart of Stone") to the psychedelic sixties ("Paint It Black," complete with sitar, and the baroque "Ruby Tuesday.") The lean, mean, rocking Stones of the '70s are well represented here by the anthemic "Street Fighting Man," the wry, kinetic "Sympathy For the Devil" and the inevitable "Jumpin' Jack Flash," whose signature riff in and of itself qualifies Keith Richards for his own entry in Webster's Dictionary. Time Pieces Vol.2 (The Best Of Eric Clapton Live In The Seventies)
Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Albert Lee (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Yvonne Elliman (vocals); George Terry (guitar); Dick Sims (organ); Chris Stainton (keyboards); Carl Radle, Dave Markee (bass); Jamie Oldaker, Henry Spinetti (drums); Marcy Levy (tambourine). Derek And The Dominos: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Bobby Whitlock (vocals, organ); Carl Radle (bass); Jim Gordon (drums). Recorded at live Fillmore East, New York, New York in 1971 and Budokan Theatre, Tokyo, Japan in December 1979. Like its predecessor, TIME PIECES VOLUME II focuses on Eric Clapton's '70s output. The difference is that Clapton's live work from three separate concert performances is given the spotlight on this particular compilation. Starting chronologically, with a transcendent Derek & The Dominoes version of "Presence Of The Lord" recorded at a 1971 Fillmore East show, these live tracks reflect Clapton's desire to get away from the "guitar god" image that was at its height during his time in Cream. The second, uncredited 1974 performance found E.C. plumbing the emotional depths of "Can't Find My Way Home" and turning in a romantic reading of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," an unusual choice for an artist more associated more with Little Walter than the Little Tramp. The final performance is from a 1979 Budokan show where Clapton's set included everything from a pair of Dylan songs ("Knockin' On Heaven's Door," "If I Don't Be There By Morning") toa traditional blues number ("Rambling On My Mind.") Miles Smiles
Miles Davis Quintet: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Tony Williams (drums). Recorded at the Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on October 24 & 25, 1966. Originally released on Columbia (9401). Includes liner notes by Anthony Tuttle and Bob Belden. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Miles Davis' restless curiosity would never allow him to look back, and as a result, he sought out new blood and fresh challenges over the course of six decades of innovation. When modernists such as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane began stretching the parameters of form and improvisation in the early '60s, Davis was leery, even hostile at first. But as the saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em--and by 1964 Miles had assembled his own dream team of innovative y |
