Steal Away (Spirituals Hymns & Folk Songs)
Personnel: Charlie Haden (bass); Hank Jones (piano). Recorded at Radio Canada, Montreal, Canada on June 29 & 30, 1994. Includes liner notes by Maurice Jackson, Charlie Haden and Abbey Lincoln. STEAL AWAY was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "Go Down, Moses" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. From the outset of his career with Ornette Coleman, through his work with pianist Keith Jarrett, his own Liberation Music Orchestra and collaborations with the likes of Paul Motian, Hampton Hawes, Chet Baker, Carlos Paredes and Ginger Baker, bassist Charlie Haden has always accorded the spiritual component of music greater importance than its technical considerations. Haden's finest work has always focused on the most intimate, humanistic principles: freedom, justice, quality. In pianist Hank Jones, Haden encounters a collaborator and fellow traveller whose musical instincts are every inch as elegant and refined as his own. And in the rich public domain of materials which make up STEAL AWAY, Haden and Jones take on an oral (and moral) tradition of music that has been inspiring listeners since before the time of the underground railroad. For the most part, Haden and Jones downplay their jazz stylings--"We Shall Overcome" being a joyous exception--in favor of simple expressive declamations, imparting a timeless feel to each performance. On the concluding "Hymn Medley," for instance, Jones' unadorned, celestial voicings and harp-like fills set the stage for Haden's earnest amens and resonant harmonies, to the theme of "Amazing Grace." Jones treats the opening "It's Me, O Lord (Standin' In The Need Of Prayer)" with modest delicacy, before lifting the tune into a selfless stride groove. Haden's devotional bass intro to "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen" is pure prayer, Jones'rich chords representing a reassuring reply, while Haden's testimonial, "Spiritual," resonates with the devotion of countless rural congregations--black and white. Dig Me Out
Sleater-Kinney: Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein (vocals, guitar); Janet Weiss (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jessica Lurie (saxophone). Recorded at John and Stu's Place, Seattle, Washington in December1996 and January 1997. From Olympia, Washington comes Sleater-Kinney, a hard-rocking, stripped-down, punk trio. No, this ain't 1979, but lead singer Corin Tucker does count punk godmother Patti Smith among her major influences, and it shows in this band's often-savage sound. Tucker also claims a debt to Aretha Franklin, and that too comes through in her full-throated vocal attack. Tucker has range on top of range, and she uses her powerful, vibrato-saturated pipes to wail about topics ranging from failed relationships to parents from hell. The songs are edgy, revved-up aural attacks. Drums churn along at circa-1979 speeds, guitars are fuzzy and fast, and whatever "licks" exist are quick and to the point. Note that this is definitely not another "girl group," even though all three members happen to be of the female persuasion. And if you like your rock and roll fast, furious and feminist, with no frills and lots of angst, this disc is for you. SKU: 1007576

X-Factor, The
This Limited version features vinyl replica packaging. Iron Maiden: Blaze Bayley (vocals); Dave Murray, Janick Gers (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Nicko McBrain (drums). Additional personnel: Xpresion Choir. Recorded at Barnyard Studios, Essex, England. When longtime vocalist Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden in 1993, many fans feared that the band was finished. But the rest of the band decided to stick it out, finding a replacement in ex-Wolfsbane frontman "Blaze" Bayley. On Maiden's first recording with Bayley, 1995's THE X FACTOR, the band sticks to the same musical direction of its early-'90s work: straightforward, heavy tunes. Bayley's voice couldn't have been more different than thatof his predecessor. While Dickinson sang in a higher register (often in an operatic style), Bayley was more of a bassy, low-down belter--just listen to such tracks as "Man on the Edge" and "Lord of the Flies" for proof. Unfortunately, the new lineup didn't have the same staying power as the Dickinson-fronted era, lasting for only one more recording. SKU: 5061880

Greatest Hits
This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos, and artwork. Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, harmonica, piano); Joe Perry (guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). Producers include: Aerosmith, Adrian Barber, Jack Douglas, Ray Colcord, George Martin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally decried by critics as an American rip-off of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith blew these criticisms away by going on to become the biggest and best hard rock band of the '70s. Fronted by funky and fast-talking Steven Tyler, Aerosmith was anchored by the rock-solid rhythm tandem of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, while guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were the instrumental gunslingers of the band. Much of Aerosmith's appeal lies in the band's outlaw personas, particularly on such incendiary cuts as "Back in the Saddle" and the equally powerful "Draw the Line." The flip side of these nuggets were arena anthems like the prototype power ballad "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion," a simmering classic written by Tyler about Perry's wife. Unlike many hard rock bands of the time whose sound was solely rooted in heavy blues-rock, Aerosmith was an unabashed fan of pop. Not only did the band cover the Beatles ("Come Together") and The ShangriLas ("Remember [Walking in the Sand]), but paid tribute to James Brown by writing its own "Mother Popcorn." SKU: 1068857

It's Alive
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Tommy Ramone (drums). Recorded live at the Rainbow Theatre, London, England on December 31, 1977. This is the Holy Grail of live concert recordings. Long unavailable in the U.S., IT'S ALIVE captures the Ramones in peak form, having the time of their lives before an appreciative British audience. From Joey's slow drawl "Weeeeeeellllll, it's great to be back here in...") to Dee Dee's "1-2-3-4," this disc pummels the listener into submission with the complete live Ramones experience to the point where you can practically feel the sweat. All the classics from the first three albums are executed with an enthusiasm the Ramones rarely mustered years down the line. The live version of "Blitzkrieg Bop" will send shivers down even the hardiest Coney Island strongman's spine, and "We're a Happy Family," "Teenage Lobotomy," and "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" express what it is to be young and dumb better than a thousand John Hughes films ever could. IT'S ALIVE is the nextbest thing to actually seeing the Ramones live and, as that's not likely to happen, this set will go a long way towards satisfying your Ramones fix. SKU: 1009679

Check Your Head
The Beastie Boys: Adrock (vocals, guitar); MCA (vocals, bass); Mike D (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Mark Ramos Nishita (keyboards); Sian Harwood (background vocals), Biz Markie. Recorded at G-Son Studios, Atwater Village, California. Some albums define an era, a place, a certain time in one's life; they exist as soundtracks for our memories, bringing that extra scent of poignancy to them. CHECK YOUR HEAD practically defined the summer of 1992 for those who were wary of the mainstreaming of rap and somewhat bored by the insurgency of grunge. By holding their heads firmly outside of any particular musical genre, MCA, Adrock & Mike D. created their own space; distorted, fuzzy, peppered with the swaggerof punk and the rootsy earthiness of early-'70s soul-jazz, and layered with ten years of hip-hop know-how. From the opening chords of "Jimmy James," it's clear that the Beastie Boys would have a chance to permanently shed the label of "fratboy rappers" that LICENSED TO ILL had forced upon them. Lo-fi, garagy, guitar-riff-loaded tracks like "Pass Da Mic" and "Gratitude" made it clear that the Beastie Boys could be taken as serious musical forces, even innovators. Yet they could still call back on their silly selves for romps like "Professor Booty" and "Funky Boss." One of the best albums of the 90's, CHECK YOUR HEAD is a turning point for a band and the genesis of a new musical hybrid. SKU: 1005207

Evening With Harry Belafonte, An
Full title: An Evening With Harry Belafonte & Friends. Personnel includes: Harry Belafonte (vocals). Engineers: David Belafonte, Kooster McCallister. Includes liner notes by Harry Belafonte. Harry Belafonte spent most of the '90s in semi-retirement, appearing only on the occasional television show, until the 1997 PBS special to which this album is the soundtrack. Largely new material, except for the traditional encore of "Matilda," "Jamaica Farewell," and "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," AN EVENING WITH HARRY BELAFONTE AND FRIENDS focuses on the world music aspects of Belafonte's music, with two songs featuring the African pop singer Richard Bona. Belafonte's vocals, while ina lower register than in his late '50s heyday, are as supple and elastic as ever, and the arrangements, though they still Americanize a fair amount, are more traditional than on his pure-pop early albums. This isn't Belafonte's best work, but it's still delightful. SKU: 1019451

Phoenix
Personnel: Cannonball Adderley (soprano & alto saxophones); Nat Adderley (cornet); George Duke (keyboards, synthesizer); Mike Wolff (keyboards); Walter Booker (acoustic &electric basses); Sam Jones (acoustic bass); Louis Hayes, Roy McCurdy (drums); Airto Moreira (congas, percussion). Producers: Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, Nat Adderly, Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1999 Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Released shortly after Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's death in August of 1975, this oddly named live, double album captures a show from the alto saxophonist's final tour. PHENIX features the final lineup of Adderley's long-running band, anchored by his cornetist brother Nat and electric keyboardist George Duke. Airto Moreira flavors the groove-oriented proceedings with his inimitable congas and hand percussion. PHENIX, a joyful and funky walk through Adderley's songbook, stretches all the way back to his hard-bop recordings of the '50s. Almost all of his most beloved songs are here--"Jive Samba," "Work Song," "Country Preacher," and of course his hit "Mercy Mercy Mercy"--performed with Adderley's usual fire and grace. The band is absolutely on, tight and swinging, and the sound quality is excellent. One of the better live jazz albums of its era. SKU: 1030484

Friends/20-20 [Remastered]
2 LPs on 1 CD: FRIENDS (1968)/20-20 (1969). Includes liner notes by Brian Wilson and David Leaf. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Utterly ignored at the time of their release, the Beach Boys' final two albums for Capitol Records, 1968's FRIENDS and 1969's 20/20, are now recognized as minor masterpieces. FRIENDS is, in modern terms, the Beach Boys' chill-out album, their first release with none of the R&B-laced rockers preferred by Mike Love. The 12 brief tracks (nearly half of them don't even hit the two-minute mark) are deeply influenced by the group's newfound interest in spirituality, with Dennis Wilson's "Little Bird" and "Be Still" among the peaceful highlights. The two key tracks are "Busy Doin' Nothin'," a peculiar bossa nova with someof Brian Wilson's oddest lyrics, and "Diamond Head," a temporary return to the pictorial soundscapes of SMILE. The more varied 20/20 goes FRIENDS one better by ending with the spine-tingling wordless a cappella exercise "Our Prayer" and the glorious "Cabinessence," two re-recordings of SMILE outtakes. Of the new material, the hit single "Do It Again," the glorious "I Can Hear Music," and Bruce Johnston's instrumental homage to Brian "The Nearest Faraway Place" are the best, and the genuinely spooky "Never Learn Not To Love," Dennis' slightly rewritten cover of "Cease To Exist" by his soon-to-be-infamous buddy Charles Manson, is the most notorious. Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Billie Holiday (vocals); Bill Stegmeyer, Milter Yaner (alto saxophone, clarinet); Toots Mondello, Al Klink, Lem Davis (alto saxophone); Lester Young, Budd Johnson, Hank Ross, Art Drellinger, Armand Camgros (tenor saxophone); Stan Webb (baritone saxophone); Billy Butterfield, Bobby Hackett, Buck Clayton, Russ Case, Joe Guy (trumpet); Dickie Wells, Henderson Chambers (trombone); Horace Henderson, Bobby Tucker, Sammy Benskin, Bernie Leighton (piano); Mundell Lowe, Tiny Grimes, Tony Mottola (guitar); George Duvivier, John Simmons, John Levy, Bob Haggart (bass); Shadow Wilson, Denzil Best, Sid Catlett, Norris "Bunny" Shawker, Specs Powell, Cozy Cole, Nick Fatool (drums); The Gordon Jenkins Singers (background vocals). Producers include: Milt Gabler. Compilation producer: Andy McKaie. Recorded between 1944 and 1950. Includes liner notes by Steven Lasker and an interview with Milt Gabler by Andy McKaie. Holiday produced some of her best-known work during her tenure with Decca in the '40s. Holiday was a full-fledged star by the time she came to Decca, with the youthful exuberance and light vocal approach of the 1930's behind her. She exhibits the maturity and sensitive, well-measured delivery that is characteristic of her finest performances. As this is the period of Holiday's pop balladry, large-scale orchestral arrangements andlush string accompaniments are the order of the day. The brilliance of Lady Day's art is dazzling, however, and the tunes (as the title indicates) are indeed her greatest. Definitive productions of "God Bless The Child," "My Man," and "T'aint Nobody's Bizness If I Do" are the stuff of legend. Holiday's voice paints the rainbow of her much-mythologized life in sad, sensual colors. While there are a few missteps in arrangement (namely the choral intro to "God Bless The Child"), classic takes of "Good Morning, Heartache" and "Lover Man" are beyond criticism, standing as perfect examples of this jazz legend's art. Northern Soul, A
The Verve includes: Richard Ashcroft (vocals). Although a fine album in its own right, the popularuty of A Northern Soul probably owes much to the huge success of Urban Hymns in 1997/8. A collection of swirling, grand epics and expansive landscapes, it is more sprawling, and, many fans would argue, more inspired than its tighter, commercial successor. Richard Ashcroft's lyrics are undoubtedly less oblique than on the group's debut, A Storm In Heaven. The album's highlight is 'History', with its fluid guitar and crafted strings. A worthy, if rambling, record, it is significant both musicallyand as an indication of the group's imminent dissolution, prior to their triumphant return two years later. SKU: 1004848

See You On The Other Side
Mercury Rev: Jonathan Donahue (vocals, guitar, guitorgan, bowed saw, sound effects); Dave Fridmann (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3, bass); Grasshopper (guitar, clarinet, Tettix Wave Accumulator); Suzanne Thorpe (flute, French horn); Jimy Chambers (Wurlitzer electric piano, drums, mojo stick). Additional personnel: Carmen Quinones, Tomcat Stamos (vocals); Rachel Handman (strings); Mark Marinoff (saxophone); Matt Jordan (trumpet); Jake Congelo (piano); Chris Reilly (tablas). Producers: Jonathan Donahue, Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper, Suzanne Thorpe, Jimy Chambers. Engineers: Dave Fridmann, Scott Hull, Jacques Cohen. One of the finest and most consistently creative rock bands around, Mercury Rev meld '60s psychedelia, indie aggression, folk/pop melodicism, and epic sonic experimentation on the order of My Bloody Valentine to achieve a singular, deliciously satisfying, and endlessly engaging hybrid. SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE finds the band in characteristically inventive form. Mercury Rev can do it all, their music combining a dose of Pink Floyd's kookiness with SGT. PEPPER-esque carnival embellishment, pure confectionery pop, punk energy, and splashes of avant-garde color. SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE, the group's third album, encompasses rock & roll nirvana ("Young Man's Stride"), acid-dipped cartoon pop ("Everlasting Arm"), space-age slacker anthems ("Racing The Tide"), techno-tinged dance grooves ("Close Encounters of the 3rd Grade"), and blues that sound like music made by asylum inmates ("Peaceful Night"). This is exploratory pop music of the finest sort. SKU: 1006220

Warehouse Songs And Stories
Husker Du: Bob Mould (guitar, vocals); Greg Norton (bass, vocals); Grant Hart (drums, vocals). Recorded at Nicollet Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota from August to November 1986. Husker Du alienated hardcore purists with its double-length swan song. The radio-ready production sounded slick to many that had thrilled to the slash-and-burn of the band's early records. TheHuskers had become polished, and they no longer sounded like they were on the verge of a sonic meltdown. But those who value songcraft over attitude will find in WAREHOUSE a varied and accomplished set of songs. What the band lost in youthful anger they gained in compositional strength. While Bob Mould's signature angst remains on stellar songs like "It's Not Peculiar," "Ice Cold Ice," and "No Reservations," some lightness creeps in. "Friend You've Got to Fall," with its chiming guitars, and the single "Could You Be the One" are exquisite power-pop. Lyrically, the message is a bit more positive. On "These Important Years," Mould dispenses almost big-brotherly advice to his fans, even offering a qualified measure of hope that "it might turn out all right." Quite a change of heart from a man who wrote "Let's Go Die" a mere six years earlier. Among Grant Hart's strongest contributions here are "She's a Woman (And Now He is a Man)" and the cathartic closer, "You Can Live At Home Now." SKU: 1006711

Peggy Suicide
Personnel: Julian Cope (vocals, guitar, bass); Lulu Chivers, Camilla Mayer, Edwina Vernon (vocals); Donald Ross "Donn-eye" Skinner (guitar, keyboards, bass, drums); What's Michael Moon-Eye (guitar); Dan Levett (cello); William Stukeley Quintet (strings); Wayland Smitty (reeds); Ronnie Ross (baritone saxophone); Aaf Verkade (trumpet); Ron Fair (piano); Tim Bran of Gwernsey (Hammond organ); G.S. Butterworth (Moog synthesizer); DeHarrison (synthesizer); Rooster Cosby (drums, percussion, congas); J.D. Hassinger (drums, tambourine, percussion); Mike Joyce (drums). Producers: Julian Cope, Donald Ross Skinner. Engineers include: Hugoth Nicolson, Ingmar Kiang, Tim Bran. PEGGY SUICIDE is either Julian Cope's fifth or seventh album, depending on how you count. After his fourth, MY NATION UNDERGROUND, he recorded two records, SKELLINGTON and DROOLIAN, that were intended mostly for release to his fan club--both are strange, drug-soaked sonic experiments that veer from folksy campfire songs to feedback freak-outs. PEGGY SUICIDE sees Cope reigning himself back in after those "excesses" and, though he delivers one of the most anti-commercial commercial records in the Island Records catalogue, it was also his most cohesive solo album up until that point. Structured into four "phases," the album is a loosely connected concept album about the human-engineered and accelerated decay of the mythic Mother Earth figure. The tracks address this concept from, for the most part, a strictly personal, rather than global, perspective. Standouts include "Safesurfer," a freaky AIDS narrative witha not insignificant Krautrock influence; "Drive, She Said," a singalong about automobile pollution; "Youa," a short, charged rant against insincerity with a wicked, fuzzed-out bass line and snaky sax solo; and the staggering "Beautiful Love," a pristine reflection on just how "in love" one can be--if you hear only one Julian Cope song, it ought to be this one. Great Eastern, The
The Delgados: Alun Woodward (vocals, electric & slide guitars, E-bow, dulcimer, keyboards, vibraphone); Stewart Henderson (vocals, guitar, autoharp, accordion, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, bass, sleigh bells, hand claps); Emma Pollock (vocals, guitar, vibraphone); Paul Savage (guitar, dulcimer, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, keyboards, drums, tubular bells, samples). Additional personnel: Jim Putnam (vocals); Charlie Cross (violin, viola); David Laing, Greg Lawson (violin); Alan Barr (cello); Camille Mason (flute, clarinet, piano); Graeme Wilson (saxophone); Lorne Cowieson (trumpet, flugelhorn); Paul Stone (trombone, euphonium); Barry Burns (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, Korg synthesizer); Graham Flett (acoustic bass); Dave Fridmann (samples); Chris Renwick, Doug Summers (programming). On this, their third album, the Delgados' ambitions are clearly high. Having brought in Dave Fridmann, best known for his production work for Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, the band succeeds in combining disparate elements like folk influences and forceful string parts. Furthermore, THE GREAT EASTERN's expansive and imaginative arrangements seem to underline the fact that Fridmann has helped the band make an album representative of their lofty visions. Album opener "The Past That Suits You Best" has atleast three vastly different sections, "Witness" employs similar dynamics, and the seven-minute long "No Danger" incorporates a gradual crescendo of sounds, starting quietly, and eventually ending in a pile of menacing tremolo. In other words, THE GREAT EASTERN is a musically dense affair, equally moving and impressive with its swooping cellos, clarinets, vibraphones and dulcimers. THE GREAT EASTERN provides the opportunity for this unusual and often-overlooked band to find a bigger audience. SKU: 1031327

Alive In America
Steely Dan: Walter Becker (vocals, guitar); Donald Fagen (vocals, Fender Rhodes, keytar, melodica). Additional personnel: Georg Wadenius, Drew Zingg (guitar); Bob Sheppard (soprano & tenor saxophones); Chris Potter (alto & tenor saxophones); Cornelius Bumpus (tenor saxophone); Catherine Russell (whistle, percussion, background vocals); Warren Bernhardt (piano, Fender Rhodes); Bill Ware, III (vibraphone, percussion); Tom Barney (bass); Dennis Chambers, Peter Erskine (drums); Diane Garisto, Brenda White-King (background vocals). Recorded live in summer 1993 and summer 1994. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker. Ever since Donald Fagan and Walter Becker stopped recording together as Steely Dan in the early '80s, their legions of fans have clamored for a reunion. Their dreams were answered in 1993 when Steely Dan reunited for an extensive American tour. Though Steely Dan was best known for its studio alchemy rather than its in-concert prowess, ALIVE IN AMERICA is a surprisingly good live album. Featuring inspired versions of Steely Dan staples like "Bodhisattva," "Josie" and "Peg" and a showstopping performance of "Reelin' In The Years," ALIVE IN AMERICA is essentially a live greatest hits collection. Not content to simply recreate the cool-jazz pop sound of the originalrecordings, the new Steely Dan lineup infuses these familiar songs with a refreshing dose of energy and enthusiasm that brings out the edge in the sly lyrics and complex musical structures. Though these fine live versions add little to the Steely Dan legend, it's great to hear Fagen and Becker performing together again and ALIVE IN AMERICA suggests that the two will create some wonderful music should they ever decide to reunite for a new studio album.
