Morrison Hotel
The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: G. Puglese (harmonica); Ray Neopolitan, Lonnie Mack (bass). Fetedfirst as underground heroes, then reviled as teeny-bop stars, the Doors threw off such conundrums with this magnificent release. MORRISON HOTEL reaffirmed their blues roots, opening with the powerful 'Roadhouse Blues' before unfolding through a succession of songs showcasing all the group members' considerable strengths. Distinctively tight instrumental playing underscores memorable material, while Jim Morrison's authoritative vocal ranges from the demonstrative ('Maggie McGill') to the melancholic ('The Spy'). Despite contemporary problems, the Doors emerged with an album the equal of their first two stunning releases. SKU: 1041673

Happy End Of You
REMIX ALBUM: HAPPY END OF YOU features Pizzicato Five songs remixed by The Automator, 808 State, Daddy-O, DJ Dara, Gusgus, Sean O'Hagan, Oval, John Oswald, Saint Etienne, Momus, The Shooter, Dimitri From Paris, DanielMiller and Gareth Jones. Producers include: Konishi Yasuhara, John Oswald. Engineers include: Bibi. Considering that their career has been based around a cut-and-paste, anything goes style of pop re-invention, it's only fitting for Pizzicato Five to have the same techniques applied to their own music. Their unique blend of over-the-top retro pop mixes everything under the sun, stirring orchestral arrangements in with samples and space-age sound effects. With the spirit of an artist and the skill of a scientist, Yasuharu Konishi creates a super-sophisticated form of lounge music. REMIX ALBUM: HAPPY END OF YOU finds the process taken even further, inviting some fellow artists to manipulate the band's 1997 album HAPPY END OF THE WORLD. Automator kicks things off with "Love's Theme," stripping the mix down to vocals and strings, throwing in a sinewy synth-bass line and film dialogue samples. "Porno 3003" becomes frenetic, hard hitting and hard-hitting in the skilled hands of DJ Dara, who throws in a sinister-sounding, mutant bass line for good measure. Visited by St. Etienne, "Love's Theme" retains a much more organic feel, driven by instrumental tracks, leaving it an airy, near-perfect slice of retro pop before turning it into a hard rock epic. The backwards vocals of Momus's "Trailer Music" easily mark the album's most disturbing moment. SKU: 1007367

King Creole (Original Soundtrack)
This 1997 reissue of KING CREOLE is remixed and remastered from the original three-track master tapes and includes 7 extra tracks. This is the soundtrack to Presley's fourth movie, restored to the original mono. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore, Tiny Timbrell (guitar); Mahlon Clark (clarinet); Justin Gordon (saxophone); John Ed Buckner (trumpet); Elmer Schneider, Warren D. Smith (trombone); Dudley Brooks (piano); Ray Siegel (bass, tuba); Bill Black, Neal Matthews (bass); D.J. Fontana, Bernie Mattinson (drums); Gordon Stoker (bongos); Hoyt Hawkins (cymbals); Kitty White, The Jordanaires (background vocals). Reissue producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded at Radio Recorders and The Paramount Scoring Stage, Hollywood, California, January-February 1958. Elvis Presley's fourth movie, KING CREOLE, is by most critics' assessments his best. A good script, a strong supporting cast and an outstanding soundtrack contributed to provide Elvis with his best opportunity at serious film acting, and the King rose to the occasion. The legendary songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller contributed three songs to KING CREOLE, among them the title track and "Trouble," a number Presley would reprise with tremendous success during his 1969 comeback television special. "Hard Headed Woman" is the soundtrack's biggest hit (it stayed atop the Billboard pop chart for two weeks), but the songs are uniformly strong throughout, and Presley sings with the mastery and dynamism characteristic of nearly all his 1950s recordings. In 1997 RCA reissued KING CREOLE with restored monophonic sound (previous reissues were marred by poor stereo remixes of the original tapes). The 1997 reissue includes several additionalalternate takes, including an interesting rearrangement of the title track and two spare versions of "As Long As I Have You" that appeared in the movie but not on previous soundtrack releases. Taru [Remastered]
Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bennie Maupin (tenor saxophone); John Hicks (piano); George Benson (guitar); Reggie Workman (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Producers: Francis Wolff, Duke Pearson. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15, 1968. Originally released on Blue Note (1031). Includes liner notes by Michael Rozek. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. Although he was past the glory days of THE SIDEWINDER or his membership in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at this session, trumpeter LeeMorgan was perfectly capable of pulling out the stunning performances that had made him the golden boy of the hard-bop era. Morgan was only 30 when he recorded TARU for Blue Note in 1968. He died an untimely death in 1972, and the album wasn't released until several years after his passing. The usual fair of modal swingers like "Avotica One" and gentle ballads such as the beautifully waltzing "Haeschen" appear here along with the prerequisite SIDEWINDER-styled groovers "Dee Lawd" and "Durem." Morgan blows as strong and confident as on any of his previous hits, although with the rising tide of fusion on the horizon, it is easy to see why this disc may not have found favor in the late '60s. Luckily, it can now be enjoyed in the proper light and takes its place with the rest of Morgan's treasured catalog. SKU: 1075419

Johnny Yes No (Original Soundtrack)
The soundtrack to a confusing, mostly dialogue-free film by writer/director PeterCare-later a respected video maker, with R.E.M.'s "Man On The Moon" among his credits-Cabaret Voltaire's JOHNNY YESNO actually received much wider recognition than the film ever did. Reissued on CD in 1991 as part of Mute Records' complete restoration of the band's early catalogue, the previously little-heard soundtrack quickly became very popular among fans of such early-'90s ambient house artists as The Orb and The KLF. JOHNNY YESNO was recorded in 1981 and is the last Cabaret Voltaire release to feature the original trio lineup. Chris Watson left shortly thereafter, with Stephen Mallinder and Richard H. Kirk continuing as a duo. The album is nearly all-instrumental, containing both very long and very short tracks, all of them relatively quiet and a bit formless. It's perfect chill-out fodder for both ambient house aficionados and those who find Cabaret Voltaire's other albums too abrasive. SKU: 1007184

Autoamerican [Remastered]
Blondie: Deborah Harry (vocals); Chris Stein (guitar, bass, vibraphone); James Destri (piano, organ, synthesizer, background vocals); Frank Infante (bass, background vocals); Clem Burke (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman (vocals); Jimmie Haskill (arranger); Wa Wa Watson (guitar); Tom Scott (saxophone); Steve Goldstein (piano, synthesizer); Ray Brown (bass); Scott Lesser, Ollie Brown, Emil Richards, Alex Acuna (percussion); B-Girls (background vocals). Producer: Mike Chapman. Reissue producer: Kevin Flaherty. Recorded at United Western Studio, Hollywood, California in December 1980. Originally released on Chrysalis (1290). Includes liner notes by Mike Chapman. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. Blondie's penultimate album before their breakup, 1981's AUTOAMERICAN is a fine collection of diverse, slickly-produced pop songs, featuring the all-pervasive "Rapture." It's difficult to explain just how omnipresent this song was on Top 40 radio in 1981--only Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" and the "Stars on 45" medley had more airplay--or how enormous its cultural impact. Before "Rapture," rap was little knownoutside of New York City's outer boroughs, but Debbie Harry's rap, namechecking scene legends Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash (alongside '60s film auteur Francois Truffaut, for the downtown hipsters), brought the style worldwide. The rap was so groundbreaking that it's easy to forget that the first three minutes of the song, where Harry coos luxuriantly over a slinky bass groove, is some of Blondie's best work, as is the rest of the album. Dream Society, The
Personnel: Roy Harper, Ian Anderson, Rick Sanders, Steve Bernard, Noel Barrett, John Fitzgerald, Felix Howard, Misumi Kosaka, Colm O'Sullivan, Bonnie Shaljean, Jeff Ward. The limited edition first pressing includes a bonus interview CD and a 52 page booklet. Thirty years and probably aboutas many albums since Roy Harper's debut, 1997's THE DREAM SOCIETY is a thoughtful, irreverent blast of folk-rock from one of the most idiosyncratic artists of his generation. Wisely avoiding any attempt to update the basic aspects of Harper's sound--12-string acoustic guitar, raspy voice, folk-rock arrangements with hints of jazz and blues--THE DREAM SOCIETY has all of the power and directness of '70s classics like STORMCOCK and HQ. Sarcastic lyrics like "Drugs for Everybody" and "Come the Revolution" show that age has not mellowed Harper, but the tender "I Want to Be in Love" and "These Fifty Years" view life from a decidedly more mature and reflective standpoint. Fine, substantial stuff. SKU: 5053954

America
Solo performer: John Fahey (acoustic guitar). Reissue producer: Bill Belmont. Recorded at Larrabee Sound, Los Angeles, California on January 31, 1971. Includes liner notes by Charles M. Young and Bill Belmont. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California in 1998. Listen to John Fahey's AMERICA and hear an honest-to-goodness pioneer of solo acoustic steel-string guitar. Originally intended as a double album but released in 1971 as a single LP, this edition contains the 9 singular tracks that were previously omitted. With a truly distinguishing approach, Fahey creates dusty, sweetly evocative worlds of American folk and blues that make the soul throb. His fingerpicking on alternating and drone bass lines coupled with chorded melodies continues to provide inspiration to acoustic players. AMERICA opens with the bittersweet "Jesus Is A Dying Bedmaker," a spirited folk painting of elation dressed in suffering. Fahey's halting articulation at the outset of the tune eventually gives way to an up-tempo gust of glad resolve. Here and elsewhere lies Fahey's remarkable talent for squeezing a wondrous amount of expressiveness out of simple musical materials. Skip James's "Special Rider Blues" crawls along like a 12-string sloth, its call-and-response melodic lines full of languor and images of a breezeless afternoon in Mississippi. "Dvorak" is asensitive arrangement of the third movement of Dvorak's eighth symphony, a perfect offering of classical composition with a natural folk sensibility. "Steel string wailing" spoken here. Live Killers
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, keyboards), Brian May (guitars, vocals), John Deacon (bass), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Recorded live on Queen's January-March 1979 European tour. Digitally remastered from original master tapes. Although many think of Queen foremost as a band that excelled in the recording studio, the group was also an exceptional live band, as the 1979 double disc LIVE KILLERS demonstrates. After years of honing its stage act, Queen had become one of the world's premiere rock concert attractions, featuring elaborate staging and costumes. Recorded during a two-month European tour in support of the JAZZ album, LIVE KILLERS does an excellent job of mixing the hits with the lesser-known songs, and inspired playing by all four members adds an additional element of excitement. LIVE KILLERS contains two versions of Queen's famous anthem "We Will Rock You"--a fast rocking version opens the set, while the foot-stomping original closes the album along with its counterpart, "We Are the Champions." Due to the abundance of material to choose from, Queen often combined several tracks as a medley. For this outing, the medley was comprised of "Death on Two Legs," "Killer Queen,""Bicycle Race," "I'm In Love with My Car," and "Get Down, Make Love." Other highlights include positively electric versions of "Now I'm Here," "You're My Best Friend," "Keep Yourself Alive," "Brighton Rock" and, of course, "Bohemian Rhapsody." SKU: 6575847

Ozzmosis [Remastered]
Available on Mini Disc on Epic (67091). NOTES: Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); Rick Wakeman, Michael Beinhorn (keyboards); Geezer Butler (bass); Deen Castronovo (drums). Producer: Michael Beinhorn. Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded at Guillaume Tell Studios, Paris, France, Right Track Recording and Electric Lady Studios, New York, Bearsville Studios, Woodstock, New York. Includes liner notes by Phil Alexander. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working onthis project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing. Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting. But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. "Your bulls**t culture licking can't stop the deathwatch ticking/You're only mortal after all," he warns on "Thunder Underground." Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds like it is. This Is Hardcore
Pulp: Jarvis Cocker, Nick Banks, Candida Doyle, Steve Mackey, Mark Webber. Additional personnel: Anne Dudley, Chris Thomas (piano); Olle Romo, Matthew Vaughan, Magnus Fiennes, Mark Haley (programming); Mandy Bell, Carol Kenyon, Jackie Rawe (background vocals); Neneh Cherry. Recorded at The Townhouse, Olympic Studios, CTS Studios, London, England. "I'm not Jesus, though I've got the same initials," croons Jarvis Cocker in Pulp's folllowup to 1996's gleefully hateful DIFFERENT CLASS. As this line illustrates, THIS IS HARDCORE takes Pulp further over the top in every sense--shamelessly dramatic structures telegraph every crescendo, and tense verse arrangements give way to sweeping sing-along choruses. Cocker's venomous, confessional lyrics are best evidencedin his trademark spoken sections--murmured tales of obsession punctuate the band's call to arms for the pasty, skinny dispossessed youth of the world. THIS IS HARDCORE boasts a fantastic palette of sonic textures, from the thick T. Rex-influenced grooves to spacey chimes, E-bows, and storms of feedback. Analog synths buzz and sputter, held aloft by rich string arrangements. As the title implies, sexual themes abound, notably on the cool rush of "Party Hard" and the slow throb of the title track. "Help The Aged" features elegant instrumentation and a lyric which manages to be poetic where lesser misanthropes would yield to the temptation to be comedic. The anthemic closer "The Day After The Revolution" carries on the proud Pulp tradition of nihilism, assuring us that, thankfully, that huge chip on Cocker's finely coutured shoulder isn't going anywhere. Siamese Dream
This edition of SIAMESE DREAM contains the original 20-page booklet. Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar, Mellotron); D'Arcy (vocals, bass); James Iha (guitar); Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). Additional personnel: David Ragsdale (violin); Eric Remschneider (cello); Mike Mills (piano). Engineers: Mark Richardson, Jeff Tomei, Butch Vig. Recorded at Triclops Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. When SIAMESE DREAM was initially released in the summer of 1993 it was hailed as alternative rock's first great post-NEVERMIND hope. And while it has gone on to become an overwhelming commercial success, it has also helped further re-draw the artistic borders of "alternative" music. By combining neo-psychedelic AOR guitars (band-members proudly claim Boston as an influence) with Pumpkin auteur Billy Corgan's "outsider" lyrical stance, SIAMESE DREAM creates a rebel image; but one with a wandering eye towards mainstream acceptance as well. Consequently, Smashing Pumpkins are equally successful relating to young lollapaloozers and to classic rock radio. Thealbum's immediate attraction is plain to see. Corgan and co-producer Butch Vig have sculpted a sonic wall of guitars--in some cases, using up to 32 separate guitar tracks on a single song--that is electrifying in its sheer scope and power. Along with Jimmy Chamberlain's powerhouse drumming, guitarists Corgan and James Iha's thick sound endows SIAMESE DREAM with a fresh feel that holds up even on repeated listens--and how many other "top ten" albums can you say that about? Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Neil Young (vocals, guitar); Danny Whitten (guitar); Billy Talbot (bass); Ralph Molina (drums). Additional personnel: Robin Lane (vocals); Bobby Notkoff (violin). Neil Young's second album yielded several of his most enduring hits (includingthe title tune, "Cowgirl In The Sand," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Down By The River") and firmly established him as a solo artist of the first rank. Though it's impossible to narrow the catalog of Young and Crazy Horse down to one representative document, this is about as close as you're likely to get. This was Young's first collaboration with the Horse, and it's still one of that group's defining recorded moments. As in much of Young's subsequent work, the feeling of despair moves unabated through the album, which runs the emotional gamut from laconically desperate to psychotically desperate. Despite the gloom, the heavy electric riffing on "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In the Sand"--two surrealistic odes to an idealized muse--is cathartic and invigorating, easily as riveting as the guitar onslaught of anyone from the Stooges to the Velvet Underground. Young's rootsy, acoustic side comes to the fore on "Round & Round" and "Running Dry." The homespun quality of these songs doesn't leaven the consuming sense of dread that permeates this album, though. Strangely, this expression of angst and emotional disorder became one of Young's most lastingly popular albums, and "Down By The River," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" quickly turned into FM staples. Scratch Street
Original score composed by Bill Laswell. Recorded at Orange Music Studios, West Orange, New Jersey. While the '90s film MODULATIONS was rather disappointing in its attempt at documenting electronica, the 2002 film SCRATCH wisely focuses on only one specific aspect of post-modern, hip-hop derived music; turntablism. Chronicling the art of turntable manipulation that began with the primitive scratching on the earliest rap records and continued through the decades to become a complex, highly developed art form, SCRATCH includes commentary and performance from some of the most cutting-edge turntablists. Naturally, so does the movie's accompanying soundtrack. From the spacey-but-potent excursion of Rob Swift from the X-Ecutioners crew to the wild, cartoonish flurriesof Eddie Def, SCRATCH represents a broad spectrum of those who have discovered that the tools of sound reproduction can be shrewdly used as an original sound source through which we can discover new dimensions in our contemporary sonic landscape. Summer Place, A
One of Hallmark Records' typical budget-priced but thoughtfully put together compilations, A SUMMER PLACE is an excellent inexpensive introduction to theunderrated work of the easy listening pioneer Percy Faith. Faith, a Toronto-born orchestra leader/arranger/producer, is best known today for his lovely "Theme From A Summer place," one of the most beautiful movie themes of the early '60s and the biggest hit in his long and varied career. The rest of A SUMMER PLACE is heavy on the movie songs-"Moon River" from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, "The Windmills of Your Mind" from THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, etc.-but it shows Faith's facility in a variety of styles. If you like this sort of thing-even if you don't admit it to others-A SUMMER PLACE is a handy precis of one of the greats in the field. SKU: 6499979

Word Gets Around
Stereophonics: Kelly Jones, Richard Jones, Stuart Cable. Additional personnel: Nadia Lannman (cello); Richard Payne (accordion); Marshall Bird (keyboards). The Welsh pop trio Stereophonics' 1998 debut is a fine, hook-filled Britpop platter. While the clear highlight is the UK hit "Local Boy in the Photograph," an insidiously catchy though lyrically elliptical tune, WORD GETS AROUND contains several tracks nearly as impressive, such as "Not Up to You," with an absurdly over-prominent electronic snare that eventually gets overtaken by Kelly Jones' big, crunchy, Cheap Trick-like guitar. "Check My Eyelids for Holes" and "Same Size Feet," which has one of the catchiest choruses on the album, are also excellent, but perhaps the most affecting track is "Too Many Sandwiches," a sharp but sweet examination ofa small-town wedding reception. WORD GETS AROUND is an exceptional debut. SKU: 1003847
