Jubilation
The Band: Levon Helm (vocals, guitar, mandolin, French harp, harmonica, drums, percussion, triangle); Rick Danko (vocals, guitar, acoustic & electric basses); Randy Ciarlante (vocals, drums, percussion); Garth Hudson (voice box, whistle, accordion, soprano & tenor saxophones, piano, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Jim Weider (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro, mandolin); Richard Bell (accordion, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards). Additional personnel: Amy Helm, Maud Hudson, Kevin Doherty (vocals); John Hiatt (vocals, guitar, Ferrington high string guitar); Aaron Hurwitz (vocals, accordion, piano, Hammond organ, organ); Marty Grebb (vocals, keyboards); Bobby Charles, Marie Spinosa (vocals, percussion); Jimmy Eppard (guitar, mandolin); Eric Clapton, Tom Pacheco (guitar); Tom "Bones" Malone (tenor & baritone saxophones, trumpet, trombone); Mike "Little Elmo" Dunn (acoustic & electric basses). Recorded at Levon Helm's Recording Studio, Woodstock, New York; BearsvilleStudios, Bearsville, New York; The Clubhouse, Germantown, New York. Includes liner notes by Greil Marcus. Over 20 years after the original line-up of the Band played their last show at the Winterland in Thanksgiving of 1976, founders Levon Helm, Garth Hudson and Rick Danko continue to plow their brand of homespun, American roots music on JUBILATION. Rounded out by Randy Ciarlante, Jim Weider and Richard Bell, The Band press ahead with plenty of mandolin, accordion and dobro on a batch of songs that are the aural equivalent of tooling around the backroads of the Deep South. You can almost feel the rhythm of the tracks under your feet as "Last Train To Memphis" chugs along with an assist by some of guest Eric Clapton's tastier playing, whereas Rick Danko's plaintive vocals draw a map to the farm mentioned on "High Cotton." Levon Helm remains the heart of the Band, and his nasal twang remains a high point, resonating throughout "Kentucky Downpour" or on a duet with John Hiatt on the latter's Celtic-flavored "Bound By Love." Of course, no trip down South would be complete without a swing through New Orleans, represented by Tom "Bones" Malone's funky horn arrangements on "Spirit Of The Dance" and the Band's easy-going take on Allen Toussaint's "You See Me." One Endless Night
Personnel includes: Jimmie Dale Gilmore (vocals); Buddy Miller (vocals, acoustic, electric, electric 12-string & baritone guitars, mandoguitar); Emmylou Harris, Jim Lauderdale, Victoria Williams, Calloway Sisters (vocals); Darrell Scott (acoustic, electric & steel guitars, bouzouki, dobro, mandolin); Rob Gjersoe (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro); Tammy Rogers (fiddle); Jim Hoke (autoharp); Phil Maderia (B-3 Hammond organ); Byron House (bass); Don Heffington (drums); Steve Hindalong (percussion). Cry Cry Cry: Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams (vocals). Producers: Buddy Miller, Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The long-awaited follow-up to BRAVER NEWER WORLD stands in sharp contrast to that album's heavy-duty pop production. ONE ENDLESS NIGHT finds Gilmore returning to the simple, earthy country sound of his '80s Hightone releases, and with fine results. Fans of Gilmore's "cosmic cowboy" brand of songwriting might be disappointed that he penned only two songs, but the others he's chosen are of uniformly high quality, and they all receive that inimitable Gilmore touch. Fellow Flatlander Butch Hancock contributes a pair of gems, and Gilmore pays tribute to another fellow Texan, Townes Van Zandt, with a sprightly take on the latter's devotional ode "No Lonesome Tune." Gilmore's ghostly warble sounds right at home delivering the otherworldly lyrics and country/folk melody of the Grateful Dead's classic "Ripple." Going further afield, Gilmore turns "Mack the Knife" into a bluesy desert ballad of death and wrongdoing. Buddy Miller's production keeps things appropriately uncluttered, adding just the right touch of twang and giving the phenomenon that is Jimmie Dale Gilmore's voice plenty of room to seep intothe listener's soul. This Was [Remastered]
Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, flute, clag horn, mouth organ, piano); Mick Abrahams (guitar, background vocals); Glenn Cornick (bass); Clive Bunker (drums). Producers: Terry Ellis, Jethro Tull. Reissue producers: Jo Brooks, Nigel Reeve. Recorded at Sound Techniques Studio, London, England between June 13 and August 23, 1968. Includes liner notes by Ian Anderson. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Jethro Tull's first album THIS WAS, is a debut of incredible maturity that fitted in nicely between blues and prog. Guitarist Mick Abrahams was the darling of the UK rock clubs, and for a brief moment held a candle to Clapton, especially with his showpiece "Cat's Squirrel". Abrahams soon left to form Blodwyn Pig. Singer Ian Anderson, the undisputed leader, wore a ratty overcoat, played flute, and pranced like a mad elf. Live they were tremendous, and on record they got even better. "Song For Jeffrey" was the choice single. Other interesting tracks are the flute-led "Serenade For a Cuckoo" (written by Roland Kirk) and"Dharma For One", with that greatest of rarities--an interesting drum solo. SKU: 1068218

Dance Naked
Personnel: John Mellencamp (vocals, guitar); Andy York (acoustic & electric guitars, organ, bass, percussion, background vocals); Jimmy Ryser (acoustic guitar); Mike Wanchic (baritone & lap steel guitars, organ, background vocals); Toby Myers (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Mike "Spud" Dupke (drums, percussion); Missy, Pat Peterson (background vocals). Recorded at The Belmont Mall Studio,Belmont, Indiana in 1994. DANCE NAKED finds John Mellencamp peeling away at layers to get back to the essence of his art and the very heart of rock and roll. Rarely if ever has a major rock star released such a home-grown, unadorned piece of work (Bruce Springsteen's NEBRASKA comes to mind). The product of a mere two weeks in the studio, DANCE NAKED is John Mellencamp's return to his roots. The Stones-style groove of "Dance Naked" finds Mellencamp reveling in this playful tale of lust, which acts as something of a metaphor for the entire recording. Mellencamp's duet with funk diva/bassist Me'Shell NdegeOcello on Van Morrison's classic freedom song "Wild Night" is the emotional centerpiece of DANCE NAKED, a cruising anthem if ever there was one. "L.U.V." and "Another Sunny Day 12/25" are kinfolk to Dylanesque protest songs, while "Too Much To Think About" depicts the sensory overload and paralyzing ambivalence of a young man's mind. Mellencamp's closer "The Breakout" is one of his great narratives, as a small town boy prepares to find his way in the world. For all its austerity, DANCE NAKED is probably the purest strain of rock and roll mythology Mellencamp has produced in years. SKU: 1004956

Mingus Plays Piano [Remastered]
Solo performer: Charles Mingus (piano). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded on July 30,1963. Originally released on Impulse! in 1963. Includes original release liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson. This album is unique in Mingus' enormous catalogue. As the title indicates, the famous bassist takes to the ivories-solo-to give life to his dazzling improvisational art. At first it seems odd to hear Mingus without one of his trademark interactive and exploratory ensembles. But the sensibility that he brings to this collection of piano pieces bears all the signs of the composer's genius. In the first piece, "Myself When I Am Real," turbulence and aching beauty merge in Mingus' spontaneous unfolding of phrases. Such standards as "Body And Soul" and "Memories Of You" are given personal, harmonically intriguing readings that blend in seamlessly with a Mingus original like "Old Portrait." In many ways, it is a treat to hear the artist working in this pared down, quieter atmosphere, as it allows one to concentrate more intently upon the range and compositional brilliance of this incomparable figure. Producers: Lee Ann Womack, Mark Wright, Frank Lidell, Mike McCarthy, Matt Serletic. "Something Worth Leaving Behind" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Were it not for the presence of a number of top-flight Nashvillesession musicians on SOMETHING WORTH LEAVING BEHIND, very few people would be tempted to call it a country record, even by contemporary standards. In fact, this offering from Lee Ann Womack is closer in spirit to the pop-rock of Sheryl Crow or post-crossover Shelby Lynne. You can tell there's more than country cookie-cutter production at work when you hear the subtly grooving R&B of "When You Gonna Run to Me" or when you notice the name-checking of Andy Warhol and Mozart in the title track that opens the album. In fact, the tracks that bear the most traditional flavor are penned by two of Nashville's hippest singer-songwriters, Julie Miller and Bruce Robison. Ultimately, you should toss all preconceptions about contemporary country out the door when encountering SOMETHING WORTH LEAVING BEHIND. SKU: 1075111

Rock In Rio (Live) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files as well as the live video for "Brave New World" and the mini documentary "A DayIn The Life." Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Nicko McBrain (drums). Additional personnel: Michael Kenney (keyboards). Recorded live at the Rock In Rio Festival, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, January 19, 2001. ROCK IN RIO finds Iron Maiden playing the 2001 edition of the Brazilian rock festival that's hosted the band since the early '80s. Recorded during the tour for BRAVE NEW WORLD, the first Bruce Dickinson-fronted record in eight years, this Maiden line-up sounds even more formidable thanks to a three-guitar attack featuring Adrian Smith, another returning alumnus. Destroying any hint of oxymoron regarding the term "thinking-man's metal," Maiden's impressive breadth of subject matter is on full display throughout this relentless 2-CD set. Delving into 20 years worth of material, the sextet delivers ripping tales of World War II fighter pilots ("Two Minutes To Midnight"), the occult ("Number Of The Beast"), medieval torture devices ("Iron Maiden"), and Native American genocide ("Run To The Hills"). Newer material draws from an equally broad range of sources. "Wicker Man" incorporates Greek mythology into its lyrics, "Ghost of The Navigator" alludes to the Flying Dutchman, and "The Mercenary" holds forth on the profits of war. With Dickinson serving as leather-lunged ringmaster, founder Steve Harris driving the pace with his thundering bass, and guitarists Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers weaving a latticework of guitar solos, ROCK IN RIO is vintage Iron Maiden. Hard Again
Also available in a 3-pack with I'M READY and KING BEE. Personnel: Muddy Waters (vocals, guitar); Johnny Winter (guitar, background vocals); Bob Margolin (guitar); James Cotton (harmonica); Pine Top Perkins (piano); Charles Calmese (bass); Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums). Muddy spent much of the late '60s and early '70s engaging in crossover attempts, achieving varying degrees of critical and commercial success. But no matter what far-flung paths his studio efforts took, his live performances remained unadulterated. It took the savvy of blues-rocker Johnny Winter to put Muddy's from-the-heart style back where it belonged: in the studio. Produced by Winter, the appropriately titled HARD AGAIN finds Muddy and his regular band pounding intothe old material with all the fury of their '50s heyday. For his part as guitarist, Winter successfully straddles the line between reverence and enthusiasm, laying back enough to let the master strut his stuff, but nevertheless goading Muddy on with highly audible verbal exhortations. This is as close as a studio album gets to a "live" feel. Hearing Muddy burn through a chestnut like "Mannish Boy" with the vim and vigor of a man decades younger, one begins to understand the nature of his artistic consistency and preternatural staying power. HARD AGAIN is Muddy's most compelling post-'60s studio effort. SKU: 5087316

Supergrass Is 10 (The Best Of Supergrass 1994-2004)
Initial pressings of this US release includesa Limited Edition Live Bonus Disc of 11 songs. Initial pressings of Supergrass Is 10 included a bonus CD. Supergrass: Gaz Coombes (vocals, guitar); Mickey Quinn (bass guitar); Danny Goffey (drums). Producers: Sam Williams; Supergrass; John Cornfield; Tony Hoffer. Recording information: 1994 - 2004. Without rock bands like Supergrass life would be a bleaker thing. We don't need many such bands, just a couple here and there to remind us what rock music is really about: exuberance, loud guitars, a catchy melody, a good beat, and attitude. Since the release of 1994's single "Caught by the Fuzz," Supergrass has been churning out a consistently satisfying blend of the aforementioned items, a hopped-up rock blueprint that lifts from the best of Britpop--Bowie, the Beatles, the Buzzcocks, the Stones--yet manages to feel fresh and vital. SUPERGRASS IS 10: THE BEST OF 94-04, a retrospective of the band's first decade, is packed with fun, well-crafted tunes. Whether on T. Rex-inspired anthems ("Seen the Light"), topsy-turvy pop pastiches ("Mansized Rooster"), electro-boogie new wave ("Kiss of Life"), or absurdly catchy singalongs ("Pumping on Your Stereo"), Supergrass pushes the right buttons. They can groove slowly, as on "Time," or launch a full-on rock assault, as on "Richard III," but at their infectious, hooky best ("All right") they can make even the creakiest listeners feel like they're reliving teenage glories. A distillation of the best the band has to offer, SUPERGRASS IS 10 is an irresistible dose of high-octane rock & roll. SKU: 6558951

Mother's Milk [PA] [Remastered]
MOTHER'S MILK is dedicated to the memory of the Chili Peppers' original guitarist Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. Slovak (along with original drummer Jack Irons) appears for the last time here on the Jimi Hendrix cover "Fire." Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Kiedis (vocals); John Frusciante (guitar); Flea (trumpet, bass); Chad Smith (drums). Additional personnel includes: Hillel Slovak (guitar); Jack Irons, Fish (drums); Julie Ritter, Gretchen Seager, Wag (background vocals). Principally recorded at Ocean Way Studios and Image Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Flea. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit Technology. 1989's MOTHER'S MILK is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers out of collegerock cultdom and into the rock mainstream. Despite suffering the loss of drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak a year earlier (Irons left after Slovak suffered a fatal drug overdose), founding members Anthony Kiedis and Flea found exceptional replacements in Chad Smith and John Frusciante. The new members' excitement is clearly evident throughout MOTHER'S MILK, arguably the Chili Peppers' best album. A cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and a tribute to Slovak, "Knock Me Down," were both big MTV successes, as were such other highlights as "Taste the Pain" (featured prominently in the movie SAY ANYTHING), "Good Time Boys," "Subway to Venus," "Magic Johnson," and "Sexy Mexican Maid." MTV Unplugged
Personnel: Babyface, Beverly Crowder, Shanice Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Kevon Edmonds, Melvin Edmonds, Marc Nelson, Lynne Linsey, K-Ci, Jojo (vocals); Reggie Griffin (guitar, keyboards, saxophone); Eric Clapton, Michael Thompson (guitar); Wayne Linsey, Tim Carmon, Bo Watson (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Ricky Lawson (drums); Sheila E. (percussion). Recorded live on September 25, 1997. "How Come, How Long" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. As one of the hottest songwriter/producers of the nineties, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds has worked with such disparate artists as Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men and Eric Clapton, and is the owner of too many awards to count. He is also the co-founder of LaFace Records, home of Toni Braxton and TLC. But, fortunately for his fans, he can't be kept away from the stage, and the MTV Unplugged series provides the perfect venue for his work. In addition to his behind-the-scenes talents, Babyface has all the tools necessary to be a captivating stage performer. His voice is silky smooth and is capable of leaping from a low, sexy whisper to a supple falsetto in the space of two notes, and he's a gifted guitarist and pianist. Joining him on this occasion is a veritable who's-who of performers who have found success interpreting his songs. Eric Clapton joins him for an upbeat versionof "Change The World" and the down home "Talk To Me." Shanice Wilson, K-Ci & JoJo also drop by to sing a tune or two. SKU: 5064653
