Secret Name
Low: Alan Sparhawk (vocals, guitar, piano); Mimi Parker (vocals, percussion); Zak Sally (bass, optigan). The Triple A Strings: IdaPearle (violin); Tresa Ellickson (viola); Kera (cello). On Low's fifth album (the fourth was a European-only live album), the band moved away from the fuzzy sound of its previous few releases and re-introduced some of the brittleness of earlier records. Many of the tracks also feature auditory experimentation. Garbled announcements, scratchy backing tracks, an instrument called an opitgan, and strings all find a place here. As the band moved into more experimental territory, it fit better than ever onto the indie label Kranky's roster, alongside Magnog, Jessamine, and the like. "Starfire" is the band's most rock & roll-sounding song, though its inspiration is more Galaxie 500 than Led Zeppelin. The shimmering "Missouri" plays on the pun of "Missouri/misery." The monumentally aggressive "Don't Understand" features the most brutal drumming to be found on a Low record. Meanwhile, songs like "Immune" actually sound cheerful! The album also contains a very different version of "Will the Night," which originally appeared on the SONGS FOR A DEAD PILOT EP. SECRET NAME is the most experimental and unpredictable Low record and, ultimately, the band's most rewarding. SKU: 1002886

Divine Secrets Of The Ya-ya Sisterhood
For the screen adaptation of the Rebecca Wells novel of the same name, Director and Soundtrack Executive Producer Callie Khouri rightly chose music reflecting the southern setting of this story. To that end, the DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOODsoundtrack finds O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? mastermind T-Bone Burnett steering this ship. Burnett's guidance through 19 cuts worth of Cajun, blues, folk, and gospel includes odd bedfellows Mahalia Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, and Acadian treasure Ann Savoy--who delivers three French-language numbers including the surprisingly upbeat "C'est Si Triste." Blues great Jimmy Reed plays a prominent role with three cuts including the tasty shuffle "Found Love," the light-driving jam "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby?," and the slow stroll "Little Rain." Reed peer Slim Harpo also appears with his signature "I Got Love If You Want It," while Taj Mahal delivers a supper-club version of Fats Waller's "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now." Other impressive covers include Macy Gray's straight-forward, bouncy take on Billie Holiday's "I Want To Be Your Mother's Son-In-Law," and Tony Bennett's after-hours rendition of Nat "King" Cole's "If Yesterday Could Only Be Tomorrow." DIVINE SECRETS lets T-Bone Burnett once again successfully throw open the doors to America's rich musical history. SKU: 1074528

Full performer name: And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: Conrad Keely, Kevin Allen, Jason Reece, Neil Busch. Engineers include: Andy Taub, Mooka & Cheryle Rennick, Barry McClellen. Don't be put off by the unwieldy name; ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead aren't out for blood, they just want to mess you up a bit. The band's hard-hitting sound, a purposefully over-the-top mixture of punk, goth, thrash, and Sonic Youth-style avant rock, is just jarring enough to make you stand up and take notice of the collectiveangst being vented, but just accessible enough to appeal to those whose ears have been realigned by years of high volume. Hell, a big label like Interscope wouldn't have signed them if they didn't think they could move a few units. Regardless of their commercial prospects, Trail of Dead strike an agreeable balance here between structure and chaos, melody and fury. SKU: 1070325

Live Magic
Queen: FreddieMercury (vocals); Brian May (guitar); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (percussion). Additional personnel: Spike "The Duke" Edney (guitar, keyboards, background vocals). Recorded live in Nepstadion, Budapest, Hungary; Knebworth Park and Wembley Stadium, England between July and August 1986. If you're searching for a concise and compact sample of Queen in concert, the single disc LIVE MAGIC is the only logical choice. Originally issued as a European-only release in late 1986, it was finally released stateside 10 years later. Recorded at stops in Budapest, Knebworth Park, and Wembley Stadium during Queen's A KIND OF MAGIC tour, LIVE MAGIC compiles live renditions of Queen's greatest hits from 1974 up to 1986. And although it's not an actual full-length set from the tour (the double-disc LIVE AT WEMBLEY '86 is a complete show), LIVE MAGIC is highly recommended to newcomers curious about the unique Queen concert experience. The lead-off track from 1986's A KIND OF MAGIC, "One Vision," turns out to be a superb concert opener, as you can actually hear the audience's cheers grow louder while the song's introduction leads to the band's grand entrance. Queen soon follows it up with an onslaught of hits--"Seven Seas Of Rhye," "Radio GaGa," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Hammer To Fall," "Under Pressure" and many others. The track "Friends Will Be Friends" is inserted in the expected closing medley "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions," adding a pleasant surprise for old-time fans. SKU: 6575848

Guest, The
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Phantom Planet: Alex Greenwald, Jacques Brautbar (vocals, guitar); Sam Farrar (vocals, bass); Darren Robinson (guitar); Jason Schwartzman (drums). Bright-eyed and bold with a vibe that feels like they've been suckling at the collective power-pop teat of Todd Rundgren and The Raspberries, Phantom Planet belies the fact that within their ranks reside a pair of actors (Jason Schwartzman of RUSHMORE fame and DONNIE DARKO's Alex Greenwald). For its sophomore bow, the Left Coast quintet teams with producers Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake to deliver delectable pieces of ear candy like the anthemic "California," jangly New Wave nugget "Hey Now Girl," and soaring, hook-laden "Lonely Day." When the lads venture outside the land of delectable harmonies and sweetly innocent themes, they come up with mixed results. The low-key ruminations of "Turn Smile Shift Repeat" finds Greenwald successfully walking down the same dour path as Thom Yorke, but the dissonant clanging of "Wishing Well" might havebeen better left out. Early pressings include a bonus disc of in-concert versions of "California" and "Do The Panic" (featuring Pete Yorn). SKU: 1072321

Late Great Townes Van Zandt, The
The final album of Van Zandt's early period, 1973's LATE GREAT is one of his most accomplished efforts, both in terms of production and songwriting. It builds on HIGH, LOW AND IN BETWEEN's arrangement and song structure advances the way REVOLVER built on RUBBER SOUL. It features Van Zandt's first recording of other writers' work (including his pal Guy Clark's transcendent "Don't Let the Sunshine Fool Ya" and Hank Williams' classic "Honky Tonkin'"),but Townes' own writing was rarely sharper. The complex outlaw narrative "Pancho & Lefty" and the beautifully spare ballad "If I Needed You" are probably his two best-loved and most widely covered songs. "The Silver Ships of Andilar" is an ominous, timeless sea-faring tale marked by both its literacy and adventurous orchestration. Townes' trademark folk-country style is well represented on the genial, wise "No Lonesome Tune" and the ironic faux-Gospel "Heavenly Houseboat Blues." SKU: 5052289

Tales From The Punch Bowl
Primus: Larry Lalonde (guitar, 6-string banjo); Les Claypool (4-string , 6-string, fretless & acoustic basses, bass banjo); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best HardRock Performance. Primus continues down its path of the quirky song. Bass phenom Les Claypool and his cohorts have previously Frizzle Fried, Sucked, and Sailed The Seas Of Cheese. Now, it seems, they have been to the Punchbowl, and have lived to tell its Tales. If you could take an element of Doctor Seuss, add some Fishbone and a bit of Tom Waits, you'd probably get something very strange, totally unlike Primus--but probably the nearest thing possible. They have harnessed the all-mighty powers of weirdness, and have made them their own: "It's alright," they say, "don't fear the worm." Primus' strength lies in their ability to mix and mask the frivolousness that comes from their peculiarity with seriously dangerous music. This is loud funk, heavy funk, driving, grooving, smelly funk. Your body will move, your brain will smile. The threesome can sound like a singular voice or a multitude of synchronous twists. Each member is a stunning instrumentalist. Yet as phenomenal as their individual abilities are, what really sets them apart is the monster group groove and cohesive chemistry. TALES FROM THE PUNCH BOWL is prime Primus. SKU: 1019809

Movement
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar); Peter Hook (vocals, bass); Stephen Morris (vocals, drums); Gillian Gilbert (keyboards). After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers. From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End," MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at times, the resemblance is alarming, but MOVEMENT is the sound of Sumner finding his voice. The spacey synth-pop of "The Him" foreshadows the sound New Order was to slowly develop, as Sumner became more comfortable with the upper reaches of his vocal range. Dynamic play abounds--the existentialist drone of "Truth" gives way to a crushing, chaotic guitar wail, while the intense, revealingly named "Doubts Even Here" slowly erupts beneath a disturbing double-vocal, stressing the burgeoning diversity of this legendary band in the making. Story Of Them Featuring Van Morrison, The
Them includes: Van Morrison (vocals, harmonica); Billy Harrison, Jim Armstrong (guitar); Ray Elliot (flute, saxophone, keyboards); Pat McAuley (organ, drums); Jackie McAuley (keyboards); Alan Henderson (bass); Ronnie Millings, John Wilson (drums). Recorded between 1964 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Jon Astley Digitally remastered from the original analogue masters by Jon Astley. This double-disc anthology of the Van Morrison-fronted Irish R&B/garage rock band is essential not just to Van fans but anyone interested in how American musical traditions were transmogrified overseas in the mid-'60s. Along with Brits like the Spencer Davis Group and The Yardbirds, Them applied a contemporary twist to the music of their American heroes. Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman," Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City" and others benefit from the unbridled enthusiasm and electric verve of Them's versions. Covering material from the band's entire Van-era career (they continued touring and recording for years after his departure), THE STORY OF THEM, which also contains somealternate takes and previously unreleased material, is basically everything you need by this seminal Irish group. Material like "Friday's Child" and "Bad or Good" offers an early view of Morrison the songwriter, foreshadowing his solo career. First and foremost, though, Them was a band, not just a vehicle for Morrison, and their raw, energetic ensemble work shines through, especially on garage band classics such as "Gloria" and "Here Comes The Night." Eyes Of The Heart
Keith Jarrett Quartet: Keith Jarrett (soprano saxophone, piano, drums, tambourine); Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone, maracas, tambourine); Charlie Haden (bass); Paul Motian (drums, percussion). Recorded atTheater Am Kornmarket, Bergenz, Austria in May 1976. Keith Jarrett's two primary '70s performing ensembles were based on two different continents (North America and Europe), and, for the most part, recorded for two different labels (Impulse and ECM). This 1976 recording of his American quartet was originally released in 1979, after they'd disbanded. Recorded live in concert in Austria, they're at their most organic here. Comprised primarily of the two-part title piece, there's a resonant soulfulness throughout. This is attributable to the players themselves--Jarrett's gospel-tinged chordal vamping, Charlie Haden's resonant, folky bass playing, Paul Motian's free-ranging percussion, and Dewey Redman's tenor saxophone. The latter in particular is deserving of much wider recognition, as his ability to turn from growling low register emotive blasts to near-funky lines is never short of dazzling, and completely natural. The 18-minute "Encore" was exactly that, and shows why this was such a stunning band, as they intuit each other's every move. SKU: 1014642

Lovesongs For Underdogs
Personnel: Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar, keyboards, slide guitar); Jonathan Williams (electric guitar); Rich Gilbert (guitar, baritone guitar, accordion, keyboards, tiple, saw); Brian Clague (viola, violin); Walter Halvorson (cello); Dean Fisher (acoustic guitar, accordion, keyboards, bass, percussion); Wally Gagel (keyboards, bass, percussion, programming); David Narcizo, David Lovering, Stacy Jones (drums); ChrisToppin, Hilken Mancini (background vocals). Producers: Tanya Donelly, Wally Gagel, Gary Smith. Engineers: Wally Gagel, Dan Mcloughlin, Matthew Ellard. Recorded at Fort Apache, Cambridge, Massachusetts. On her first solo effort, LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS, Tanya Donelly makes it plain that she can still write smart pop music. While quirky at times, LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS refuses to be over-wrought with sentimentality. Throughout the album, there are echoes of Donelly's former bands, Belly and Throwing Muses. The songs mostly utilize a simple drum set and straightforward bass lines while guitars drone and hum. There's very little repetition here, and Donelly's impressive voice dominates, thanks to her knack for switching seamlessly from subdued beauty to condensed anger. SKU: 1039091

Overcome By Happiness
Pernice Brothers: Joe Pernice (vocals, guitar); Bob Pernice (guitar, vocals). Additional personnel: Michael Deming (vocals, acoustic & electric piano; Peyton Pinkerton (vocals, guitar); Thom Monahan (vocals, bass); Anhared Stowe, Christine Kolberger (violin); Katrina J. Smith (viola); Katleen Shiano (cello); Susan Cavender Knapp (harp); Mike Jones (flugelhorn); Tim Atherton, David Sporny, Peter McEachearn (trombone); Aaron Sperske (drums, tympanum, percussion). Producers: Thom Monahan, Michael Deming, Joe Pernice. Recorded at Studio .45, Hartford, Connecticut. The ironic title gives no clue to the overwhelmingly melancholic tone of this disc (the title track's lyric is; "You don't feel so overcome by happiness.") Yet, for a release on Sub-Pop, who must bear the onus of spearheading the grunge movement, this record is a surprising tidal wave of pop. That's "pop" as in "songs you must sing alongwith the very first time you hear them." Sleepy pop. Dreamy pop. So dreamy, in fact, that some of the songs, like dew on the lawn, threaten to evaporate into the air ("Sick Of You.") The Pernice Brothers are backed up by an orchestra and led by Joe Pernice's breathy, wistful vocals. And some of these hooks will stay with you long after the disc has stopped spinning. So dive into something soft and fluffy, but please listen responsibly; due to the sequencing of the most sedate songs at the end of the record, it is ill advised to operate heavy machinery while listening to this disc.
