More Of The Monkees
The Monkees: Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith (vocals, guitar); Davy Jones (vocals); Mickey Dolenz (drums). Additional personnel: James Burton, Glen Campbell, Wayne Erwin, Gerry McGee, LouieShelton, Al Gafa, Al Casey, Michael Deasy, Don Peake (guitar); Jimmie Seals (saxophone); Neil Sedaka, Michael Cohen (piano); Bobby Hart (organ); Don Randi, Michael Rubini (harpsichord, organ); Larry Taylor, Russell Savakus, Larry Knechtel, Bob West, Carol Kaye, Ray Pohlman (bass); Hal Blaine, Billy Lewis, Herbert Lovell, Jim Gordon (drums); Norm Jeffries, Henry Lewy, Frank Capp, Julius Wechter, Gene Estes, David Walters (percussion); Tommy Boyce (background vocals). Producers include: Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, Michael Nesmith, Jeff Barry, Jack Keller. Reissue producers: Andrew Sandoval, Bill Inglot. Recorded in Hollywood, California and New York, New York in 1966. Originally released on Colgems (102). Includes liner notes by Andrew Sandoval. Clearly they were not America's answer to the Beatles, even though at the time moptop fans seethed and decided to boycott them. They were the best manufactured pop group ever, and in Michael Nesmith had a musical semi-genius. Their second album, apart from the wretched "Your Auntie Grizelda," carries on from their debut. It contains the mantric "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," Neil Diamond's chunka-chunka-chunk "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)," the funky "Mary Mary" and the paragon, "I'm A Believer," also written by Neil Diamond. Euphoric and nostalgic and completely marijuana-free. SKU: 1005384

Best Of Thelonious Monk, The
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Lou Donaldson, Sahib Shihab, Danny Quebec West (alto saxophone); Lucky Thompson(tenor saxophone); George Taitt, Idrees Sulieman, Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Al McKibbon, John Simmons, Bob Paige, Gene Ramey (bass); Shadow Wilson, Max Roach, Art Blakey (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Apex & WOR Studios, New York, New York between 1947 and 1952. Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. So many of the tunes that virtually define Thelonious Monk's career were recordings for Blue Note. "Ruby My Dear," "Well You Needn't," "In Walked Bud," "Straight No Chaser" and other classics are compositions Monk would continue to revisit and explore throughout his career. The nature of Monk's composing and the brevity of the takes (all were recorded for release on 78's; the longest cut clocks in at under three-and-a-half minutes in length) make it clear that these recording sessions were not only about blowing and technical prowess; Monk's experiments take hold in a short span of time. Monk's peers ran the bebop revolution, but where they were content to rewrite the melodic contours of jazz, Monk seemed determined to rethink every dimension of the small ensemble. In these recordings, Monk outlines his ideas on tape. SKU: 5068038

Trav'lin' Light
Personnel: Peggy Lee (vocals); Dave Barbour, George Van Eps (guitar); Hal Schaefer (piano, celeste); Buddy Cole (piano); Phil Stephens (bass); Tom Romersa, Nick Fatool (drums). Compilation producers: Michael Cuscuna, Cy Godfrey. Recorded at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, California on July 16, 1946 and April 4 & 8, 1949. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. TRAV'LIN' LIGHT is a splendid set of great songs, performed in Peggy Lee's outstanding style. Cut in thelate '40s, these 15 radio transcriptions were originally leased out to radio stations, broadcast a couple of times and then shelved. They offer wonderful insight into the maturing style of the singer. Few can convey the warmth and intimacy Lee delivers unfailingly here. Accompanied by a rhythm section including her husband, Dave Barbour, on guitar, Lee transforms these tunes into gems of incalculable value. "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "Oh You Crazy Moon" are songs of heartbreak with the added touch of Lee's winsome woe, while chestnuts like "I Ain't Got Nobody" are given an effective update; Lee caresses the song into poetry. These performances are timeless artistry. SKU: 1080297

Through The Trees
The Handsome Family includes: Rennie Sparks, Brett Sparks. Brett and Rennie Sparks make music that doesn't just evoke another time and place, but wholly different intentions of music making. The husband-and-wife team who are the Handsome Family brew up a distinctive musical concoction--folky, pre-war country music and moody, downbeat roots-rock, served in lush but minimalist arrangements--with a narrative feel that crosses Flannery O'Connor's gothicism and Monty Python's absurdities. THROUGH THE TREES, the group's third album, is full of beautiful, hummable songs one imagines being performed by inebriated Appalachians, sitting around a camp-fire hootenanny in, say, 1937, trying to see who'll crack up with laughter at their tale and who'll begin to cry. Their songs are populated by giants, drunks and generally mad folk who run around mythical forests, cathedrals and motel rooms, losing their minds, finding true love, living, dying. It'd be a crude understatement to rate the Sparks among the most unique songsmiths recording circa 1998, and more appropriate to say they summon the spirit of American folk artabout as well as anyone in the last quarter of the 20th century. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
For this 1996 reissue, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD has been digitally remastered by the original producer, Gus Dudgeon, using original master tapes and digital processing equipment at 20-bit resolution. According to Dudgeon (ICE newsletter, January 1996), the results are "100% better" than thetwo previous American CD issues. Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, electric piano, organ, Farfisa organ, Mellotron, keyboards); Del Newman (arranger); Prince Rhino (vocals); Davey Johnstone (acoustic, electric, slide & steel guitars, banjo, background vocals); Leroy Gomez (saxophone); David Hentschel (ARP synthesizer); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, congas, tambourine, background vocals); Ray Cooper (tambourine); Kiki Dee (background vocals). Recorded at Strawberry Studios, France. Originally released as a 2-LP set on MCA. Includes liner notes by John Tobler and Gus Dudgeon. This is part of Rocket's Elton John: The Classic Years series. Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Candle In The Wind," an elegy for a real, misunderstood idol; "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto tribute to a fake one; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; and the gorgeous title ballad. Actually, "Candle In The Wind" didn't become a certified hit until 14 years later, when John re-recorded it with the Melbourne Symphony. The fact that it wasn't released as a single at the time is testimony to the wealth of pop pleasures available here, and to the era in which the album was made. If GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD came out in the '90s, John would have sat back for the next three or four years while the record company issued a slow and steady flow of singles; instead, he went right back to work, making three more albums in the next two years. Which left some of YELLOW BRICK ROAD's best moments to be found by adventurous radio programmers. The swelling, synth-fueled "Funeral For A Friend" is magnificent, and it leads into one of John's toughest guitar-rockers, "Love Lies Bleeding"; the 11-minute medley of those two songs supplied FM radio with John's own "Stairway To Heaven." "Grey Seal" is both piano showcase and perfectly constructed verse-chorus-verse, practically begging for a synth-pop cover. The rocking "All The Girls Love Alice" is one of the era's most overt references to lesbianism, and "Harmony," the soft ballad that closes the album, may be John's grandest melody. SKU: 1000922

Rumours
Fleetwood Mac: Lindsey Buckingham (vocals, guitar); Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards); Stevie Nicks (vocals); John McVie (bass); Mick Fleetwood (drums). Producers: Fleetwood Mac, Richard Dashut, Ken Caillat. Principally recorded at The Recort Plant & Wally Heider Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California, Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida, Davlen Recording Studio, North Hollywood, California. "Songbird" recorded live atZellerback Auditorium, University of California-Berkeley, Berkeley, California on March 3, 1976. The reviewers tell us what to buy, but the public actually part with the cash. Surely 26 million people cannot be wrong, as original Mac guitarist Peter Green's creation became the prime example of AOR long after his departure. The inner strife and turmoil of the band is credited as having helped to make this many-headed beast into such a success. Keyboardist Christine McVie sparred with husband/bassist John, and singer Stevie Nicks scrapped with boyfriend/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham. Drummer Mick Fleetwood held the emotional mess together with confident steadiness as demonstrated in his confident, inventive playing throughout the record. Nicks' fiery vocals on "Go Your Own Way" complemented McVie's beautifully understated style on tunes like "You Make Loving Fun," exemplifying their successful fire-ice dichotomy. SKU: 1005246

Downward Spiral, The (Deluxe Edition/Remastered/Parental Advisory) [Hybrid SACD] [Digipak] [PA]
Full title: The Downward Spiral (Deluxe Edition). Additional package information: Slipcase. Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Danny Lohner, Adrian Belew (guitar); Flood (synthesizer, programming); Andy Kubiszewski, Chris Vrenna, Stephen Perkins (drums). Engineers: Sean Beavan, Chris Vrenna, Alan Moulder. Recorded at Le Pig, Beverly Hills, California; The Record Plant A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Hurt" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Trent Reznor (vocals, guitar, electronics); Andy Kubiszewski (drums). Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor became an instant alternative-music hero with 1989's PRETTY HATE MACHINE, an angry-yet-accessible album that appealed to rock fans and club kids alike. Record-label woes led to a five-year delay for Reznor's follow-up, with two hard-edged EPs (BROKEN and its remix disc, FIXED) issued in the interim. Finally released in 1994, THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL seethes with an almost unhinged industrial ferocity, due, in part to both Reznor's frustration with messy bureaucratic entanglements and time spent with Ministry's Al Jourgensen during the peak of that band's guitar-heavy phase. Although, SPIRAL does reveal the influence of latter-day Ministry(particularly on the blazing opener, "Mr. Self Destruct," and the scathing, distortion-filled "March of the Pigs"), Reznor also incorporates elements of progressive rock and funk into the proceedings. More than any other Nine Inch Nails song, the provocative, groove-laden "Closer" (and its shocking video) established Reznor as a bold, audacious artist. In contrast, quiet and emotive songs such as Eno-esque instrumental "A Warm Place" and the spare, haunting "Hurt" (famously covered by Johnny Cash shortly before the country legend's death) revealed Reznor's sensitive side. Here the intense performer works with his largest sonic palette yet, and the results are fascinating.
This deluxe edition of THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL includes a 13-track bonus disc featuring B-sides, demos, and rarities. SKU: 6577107

Life After Death
Personnel includes: The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, The Lox, Too Short, Layzie Bone, Krayzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Lil' Kim, Puff Daddy (rap vocals); Daron Jones (vocals, various instruments); 112, R. Kelly, Carl Thomas, Angela Winbush, Quinnes Parker, Michael Keith, Marvin Scandrick (vocals); Carlos "July Six" Broady, Stevie J., Paragon (various instruments); Deric "D-dot" Angelettie (programming); Faith Evans, Pam Long, Kelly Price, Keanna Henson, Karen Anderson,Deborah "Portia" Neeley Rolle, Michael Keith, Marvin Scandrick (background vocals); Ron Grant & Friends. Producers include: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Stevie J., Easy Mo Bee, Daron Jones, Kay-Gee, RZA, Buck-Wild, DJ Premier, Havoc, Clark Kent. LIFE AFTER DEATH was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Hypnotize" was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Mo Money Mo Problems" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. The double-CD LIFE AFTER DEATH arrives in stores, ironically and tragically, less than three weeks after the Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Biggie Smalls, as he was known, quickly became one of rap's most respected MCs after the 1994 release of his debut album, READY TO DIE. His music sparked the comeback of East Coast hip-hop, while his very being added fire to rap's over-publicized East-West rivalry. For some (see "Playa Hater"), Biggie's success was too much to handle, and he became a primary target in hip-hop's continuing feud. Never feeding into that war on wax, B.I.G. chose to remain silent, until LIFE AFTER DEATH became a reality, and the situation spoke for itself. Although song titles like "You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You)" eerily mirror the real-life tragedy, the music on LIFE AFTER DEATH serves to bring the Notorious B.I.G. back to life. As anything that he appeared on, the production (by a superstar conglomerate including Sean "Puffy" Combs and the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA) is top-notch, and his lyrical skills are razor sharp. Biggie was loved for his versatility. On "Notorious Thugs," he switches up his style to rhyme like a member of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Tracks like "Hypnotize" showcase his ability to be hardcore and commercial at the same time. Another talented rapper lost to senseless violence; B.I.G.'s winning album streak will, sadly, have to end here. SKU: 1001869

Extremist, The
Personnel: Joe Satriani (guitar, banjo, dobro, keyboards, harmonica, mandolin, synthesizer, bass); Brett Tugle, Andy Johns (organ); Phil Ashley (synthesizer, keyboards); Matt Bissonette, Doug Wimbish (bass); Greg Bissonette (drums); Bongo Bob (electric drums, percussion); Simon Phillips, Jeff Campitelli, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Producers: Joe Satriani, Andy Johns, John Cuniberti. Engineers: Andy Johns, John Cuniberti, Joe Satriani, Bart Stevens. All songs written by Joe Satriani. Over the course of his last several albums, the legendary guitarist Joe Satriani has established himself as the poet laureate of heavy metal guitarists, a canny stylist with a rare gift for eliciting lyrical nuancesfrom a wall of distortion and feedback. With the support of a skin tight funk-metal ensemble, Satriani unleashes his fiery range of moods, although on a ballad like "Cryin'" his orchestrations are poignantly tasteful. Balancing blazing hellbent phrasing with carefully wrought arrangements, THE EXTREMIST charts bold new directions for instrumental rock. SKU: 1004708

Third Eye Blind: Arion Salazar (vocals, guitar, bass); Stephan Jenkins, Tony Fredianelli (vocals, guitar); Brad Hargreaves (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Hrund V Bakshi, Sam Bass, Vanessa Carlton, Kimya Dawson, DJ Flair, Kim Shattuck. Producers: Stephan Jenkins, Arion Salazar, Jason Carmer. Recorded at Mourningwood Studios and Skywalker Sound, San Francisco, California. It wouldn't be difficult to make a case for Third Eye Blind as the archetypal '90s-spawned pop/rock band. On their third album (and their first of the 21st century) they continue down the path that started with their 1997 smash "Semi-Charmed Life." Throughout OUT OF THE VEIN, the band employs lessons learned from the early-'90s Seattle crowd in equal measure with the amiable accessibility of amped-up mid-'90s folk-rockers like Counting Crows and Hootie & the Blowfish. That is to say, they know how to pour on the radio-ready pop hooks while keeping the guitar riffs appropriately taut and the rhythms on the right side of mid-tempo. While there are a couple of stylistic off-ramps, such as the reggae lilt of "Wake For Young Souls" or the lazy, slow-mo vibe of "Self Righteous," thebalance of this disc is one slice of bright, mainstream pop manna after another, with melodic smarts to spare. Crush (UK Edition) [ECD]
Bon Jovi: Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres. Additional personnel: Hugh McDonald (bass); Michael Dearchin, Melissa Russo, Meredith Russo (background vocals). Producers: Luke Ebbin, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora. Recorded at Sanctuary II Studio, New Jersey. CRUSH was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and "It's My Life" was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. When Jon Bon Jovi went into the studio to record his band's seventh studio album, he went from budding actor to Jersey rocker to remind the world where his bread-and-butter was. After the initial plan to team up hard-rock production gods Bob Rock and Bruce Fairbairn fell through due to the latter's death,an audition process was set up with alt-rock engineer Luke Ebbin (Splender) winning the job. The choice was a fortuitous one as here Bon Jovi updates its sound with a smattering of loops and impressive arrangements, without losing the pop crunch of its heyday. Along the way, Bon Jovi tips its collective hat to the teen brigade invading the charts and the glory days of "Livin' On a Prayer" (the talk-box laden, Max Martin co-written single "It's My Life"), while still writing songs about blue-collar characters full of optimism (the Springsteen-flavored "Two Story Town"). CRUSH also contains the requisite power ballads for Bon Jovi's starry-eyed female fans ("Thank You for Loving Me," "Save the World") along with glam (the Elton John-inspired "Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars") and grimy ("One Wild Night") rockers. World We Knew, The
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra (vocals). When the first cut kicks off with a fuzz bass intro, you know right off the bat this isn't your typical Sinatra album. On THE WORLD WE KNEW, Ol' Blue Eyes gets contemporary, circa 1967. No, he doesn't appear in Sgt. Pepper garb on the cover, and there's nary a sitar to be found.Rather, he approaches classy '60s pop tunes of the Dusty Springfield/Dionne Warwick variety, while still maintaining the swinging style and brilliant phrasing that are his trademarks. His duet with daughter Nancy on the Bacharach-esque "Somethin' Stupid" is as close to perfect pop as anything that ever came out of Phil Spector's studio, and its infectious melody will haunt you beyond the grave. Sinatra injects the Petula Clark hit "Don't Sleep In The Subway" with his sassy strut, succeeding despite an overly brassy arrangement. Even Lee Hazlewood's dopey "This Town" (from the justifiably forgotten teen flick "The Cool Ones") is brought to life in Sinatra's hands. "Drinking Again" finds our boy in more familiar saloon surroundings, and glides along on a lovely Claus Ogerman arrangement. The pseudo-poetic liner notes provide excellent comic relief. SKU: 1009984

Slicker Than Your Average
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Craid David (vocals); Sting (vocals). Producers: Marshall & Trell, Mark Hill, Soulshock & Karlin. Englishman Craig David's countrymen hold him and his work in high esteem; no less iconic a musical personage than Sir Elton John has been known to sing David's praises. Naturally, though, in the world of R&B what matters most is how this former DJ stacks up alongside his US contemporaries. Fortunately for both him and us, David compares quite favorably. In fact, the vibrant, often surprising production on the deceptively titled SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE immediately stands apart from so many of the cookie-cutter soundalikes with which this particular field is cluttered. Sure, David mixes R&B, pop, and hip-hop flavors like any contemporary R&B man would, but as the old saying goes, "it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it." Leave it toa Brit to cut the Yanks at their own game. Funky syncopation and danceable tempos are the order of the day ("Fast Cars," "Eenie Meenie"), but David's got a swoon-worthy voice that can wrap itself around a ballad just as easily, as shown on the heart-melter "You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til the Well Runs Dry)." All in all, David's second time out of the gate is fully as successful as his first. SKU: 1077405

All That You Can't Leave Behind
U2: Bono (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); The Edge (guitar, piano, synthesizer, background vocals); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Daniel Lanois (guitar, background vocals); Paul Barrett (brass); Brian Eno (synthesizer, programming, background vocals). Recorded in Dublin, Ireland and France. "Beautiful Day" won the 2001 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, for Song Of The Year and for BestRock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Walk On" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. "Elevation" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Seldom has an album title been as appropriate as ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND. Here, U2 returns to its pre-irony '80s glory days with a straightforward rock approach, leaving behind the electronics and intentional mock-decadence of POP and ZOOROPA. It quickly becomes clear however, that the band had to make those albums in order to get to the ego-free state from which this one emerges. While Larry Mullen's driving beat, Adam Clayton's insistently throbbing bass, the Edge's chiming guitar, and Bono's soulful vocals mesh as in the days of yore, there's a less messianic feel to the proceedings that must have resulted from the group's ego-deflating '90s endeavors. While POP and ZOOROPA were the sound of four guys having fun, on this album U2 manages to combine unpretentious joy with the open-hearted rock power of its early recordings. From the spiritual warmth of "Grace" to the soul leanings of "In a Little While," the band regains the organic quality that had been missing from its music of the previous decade. What sounds like an unusually hands-off approach on the part of producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois can only mean that they were smart enough not to fix what was clearly not broken. SKU: 1045061

Live Love Larf And Loaf
French/Frith/Kaiser/Thompson: John French (vocals, drums); Fred Frith (vocals, violin, bass); Henry Kaiser (guitar, sanshin); Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar). Recorded at Mobius Music, San Francisco, California in March 1987. Originally released on Rhino (70831). Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson. This is a surprising and satisfying album by an unexpected quartet of Richard Thompson and Henry Kaiser on guitars, Fred Frith on bass and violin, and John French (from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band) on drums. With the exception of Kaiser they all sing and the songs mark the friendly coming together of folk music and experimentalism. The tunes are primarily originals. Frith's "Where's the Money" would have been right at home on his CHEAP AT HALF THE PRICE album, while Thompson's "Drowned Dog Black Night" is an essential addition to hislarge catalog. Throughout, French's drumming displays all the multi-rhythmic patterns he excelled at in his previous band--he anchors, propels, weaves, and just plain rocks. This album is a fine example of musicians having a good time creating music that's also entirely worthy of a listener's full attention. There are moments of humor, as well as heartbreaking beauty. Kaiser's longtime engineer, Oliver DiCicco, again succeeds in capturing warm tones from every instruments and voice. SKU: 1045202

Who's Zoomin' Who
Personnel includes: Aretha Franklin, Peter Wolf (vocals); Corrado Rustici (guitar, synthesizer); William "Doc" Powell, Steve Khan, Mike Campbell, Ray Gomez, Carlos Santana (guitar); Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Clarence Clemons (saxophone); Walter Afanasieff, Preston Glass, Nat Adderley Jr.(keyboards); Benmont Tench (organ); Randy Jackson (synthesizer, bass); Robert Kandor (synthesizer); Louis Johnson, Nathan East (bass); Narada Michael Walden (drums, percussion); Stan Lynch, Yogi Horton (drums); Andy Narell (steel drums); Steve Kroon (percussion); Greg Gonaway (tambourine); The Charles Williams Singers, Carolyn Franklin, Sylvester, Jeanie Tracy, Vicki Randle, Jim Gilstrap, Preston Glass, Kitty Beethoven (background vocals). The Eurythmics: Annie Lennox (vocals, keyboards); David A. Stewart (guitar, keyboards). Recorded at The Automatt, San Francisco, California; United Sound, Detroit, Michigan; The Plant, Sausalito, California; Right Track, New York, New York. When the Reverend C.L. Franklin passed away in 1984, daughter Aretha (who was close to her father) rebounded from this personal tragedy by cutting 1985's WHO'S ZOOMIN' WHO? with producer Narada Michael Walden. The resulting album is full of famous names, contained three Top 20 singles and was Franklin's highest-charting album since 1972. Hitting the upper reaches of the charts were "Freeway Of Love," the title track and "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves," a feminist anthem written by and recorded with the Eurythmics. The Top 5 "Freeway" found Lady Soul backed by the Santana rhythm section and featured a ripping sax solo by Clarence Clemons. Other famous cameos on ZOOMIN' include Dizzy Gillespie playingtrumpet on the Franklin-penned "Integrity," and Carlos Santana and Peter Wolf contributing guitar and vocals respectively on "Push. Amidst the flood of slick R&B, Van McCoy's "Sweet Bitter Love" is a slow-burning highlight in which Franklin's exquisite singing cuts through the numerous drum machines and lite funk rhythms populating most of this record. Stoned Raiders [PA]
Cypress Hill: Eric Bobo(rap vocals, drums); B-Real, Sen Dog (rap vocals); DJ Muggs (turntables). Additional personnel includes: Redman, Method Man, Kurupt, Kokane, M.C. Ren, King Tee (rap vocals); Christian Olde Wolbers (guitar, bass); Mike Sims (guitar, Moog synthesizer); Jeremy Flenner, Andy Zambrano, Rogelio Lozano (guitar); Jessy Moss (background vocals). Recorded at Ameraycan Studios, Hollywood, California. While most of the rock and rap acts that emerged successfully in 1991 have gone the way of the Arsenio Hall show, Cypress Hill remains a significant and innovative force in both genres. Blazing a gold and platinum trail that has spawned many copycat groups, Cypress continues to keep it real on its 10th-anniversary album STONED RAIDERS. Kurupt guests on "Kronologik," a hip-hop account of the band's highs and lows. M.C. Ren kicks it old-school style on "Southland Killers." A luscious surf guitar chord blends with B-Real's verses and Bobo's percussion on "Bitter." "Amplified" is equally riveting with its funky retro groove. Redman and Method Man's blunt-infected rhymes flow perfectly with B-Real's on "Red, Meth & B." RAIDERS shows off all the musical sides of Cypress Hill, from street-level hip-hop to crunchy metal riffs to a flamenco guitar solo, and consequently takes the Cypress experience to the next level. Monsters Inc.
Original score composed and conducted by Randy Newman. Recorded at Sony Pictures Scoring Stage and Signet Sound Studios, Hollywood, California. "If I Didn't Have You" won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Song. "If I Didn't Have You" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media MONSTERS, INC. wasnominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. "The Ride Of The Doors" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. MONSTERS, INC. is an endearing Disney Pixar film about the adventures of two fuzzy monsters. Randy Newman's Dixieland-inflected music captures the fun and frolic of the movie's heroes Sulley and Mike (as played by John Goodman and Billy Crystal respectively). Joyful and easygoing, Newman's score is as musically smart and witty as it is silly and even, at times, spooky. Rich orchestral arrangements are highlighted by jazz soloists Tom Scott (saxophone), Andy Martin (trombone), and Mike Long (piano). Goodman and Crystal's vocal duet on the opening track and theme song "If I Didn't Have You" is more than charming; it is simply delightful in its goofy delivery. SKU: 1069733

Genetically Modified
Cabbageboy: Si Begg. Techno prankster Si Begg returns to his madcap, sample-pilfering ways on GENETICALLY MODIFIED, the first full-length statement from his trusty Cabbageboy alias. The wobbly, wigged-out "Departure"--all space sounds, brass stabs, and bumping beats--indicates where this trip is headed. To the moon, Alice. Bang! Zoom! Crash! You can't read a book by its cover--or judge an album by its titles--but, in the case of GENETICALLY MODIFIED, "R & B Angus Steakhouse," "I: Cabbage," and "Hey Hey We're the Monks" tell you plenty. Cabbageboy's take on thesci-fried big/break/freak-beat sound leans heavily on the weird. Just call it "quip-hop." Yet, somehow, Begg pulls together these jumbles of ultra-obscure, digitally deformed samples, jokey references, and skew-whiff programming into such fresh, funky shapes as "Donkey Kong" or "Talk Show." It's not all frantic antics, either. Lilting, Mu-Ziq-like melodies lighten the unsettling "Soylent Green" overtones of "Vended Food" and boost "Planet," "As the World Rages," and "I: Cabbage" to truly stellar heights. And all the wriggles and oscillations in the galaxy can't hide the fetching future-jazz tunes worked into the fabric of "Interstellar Love" and the boisterous "Bean (To This World)." SKU: 1041782

Brothers, The
Much like the soundtrack to its female-buddy counterpartWAITING TO EXHALE, the more male-focused THE BROTHERS finds an impressive collection of artists representing the worlds of hip-hop and contemporary R&B. Neo-soul crooner Eric Benet sets the table with the up-tempo lament "Love Don't Love," while father and son Eddie and Gerald Levert provide a bridge between old- and new-school with the Quiet Storm duet "Two of a Kind." Duganz throws some big beats into the mix with "I Put it Down," and Snoop Dogg goes with his trademark casual flow on the slow-rolling "Hi 2 U." Silk sheet and champagne moments abound whether it's RL making like Maxwell on "Good Love," Lil' Johnny giving Carl Thomas a run for his money with "Wheel of Fortune," or Dave Hollister pledging his love to his lady on the gospel-influenced "Forever." Elsewhere, this mix gets spiced up by '70s icons Frankie Beverly and Maze, who make a welcome return with the harmony-laden funk of "Teach Each Other," and Toaster DL with the dub-flavored rap "Josephine." Led Zeppelin I
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic, electric, & pedal steel guitar, background vocals); John Paul Jones (organ, bass, background vocals); John Bonham (drums, tympani, background vocals). Additional personnel: Viram Jasani (tablas). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England in October 1968. Rising from the ashes of his old band the Yardbirds, session guitarist JimmyPage formed Led Zeppelin, one of the most powerful, influential, and enduring British bands to emerge in the '60s. Despite the presence of such classic thrash-o-ramas as "Good Times Bad Times" and "Communication Breakdown," what set Led Zeppelin apart was the depth and range of their music. Their sound was bathed in the blues, from rootsy covers of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me" and "I Can't Quit You Baby," to the crunching rhythm changes of "Dazed And Confused." Few guitarists before or since possessed Page's sense of pacing and dynamics, as exemplified by the traditional acoustic folk elements framing the arena gestures on "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," and the raga-flavored acoustic mystery of "Black Mountain Side." These elements would continue to evolve on subsequent albums, leading to some of Led Zeppelin's greatest moments. SKU: 1084109
