Hecklers Hop
Jazz trumpeter Roy Eldridge was one of the first to take the pervasive Louis Armstrong influence and build on it, forming his own unique sound--many critics consider him the link between Armstrong and bebop trumpet icon Dizzy Gillespie. This collection of small-group tracks from the mid- to late 1930s captures Eldridge in wonderful form: brash, brassy, and wildly imaginative. The title track is a tour-de-force, where Eldridge points to where jazz would go in the future while swinging wildly all the way. The Ellington-like "That Thing" features wonderfully and gleefully sly blues playing, and "Swing Is Here" is a rollicking dance number that encapsulates everything great about the big, danceable jazz bands of the '30s. As a bonus, this set also features several jazz giants at (or approaching) their creative peaks: Benny Goodman, ChuBerry, Zutty Singleton, and singer Helen Ward. HECKLER'S HOP is recommended for fans of swing-era jazz and is essential for fans of jazz trumpet. SKU: 1016812

Meat Is Murder
The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, piano); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at Amazon Studios, Liverpool and Ridge Farm, Surrey, England. MEAT IS MURDER found the Smiths further honing their craft, tightening and brightening their sound. Unlikely heroes at home in the UK, and starting to break through the cracks in the States, they latched inextricably onto a generationof youth on a global scale with this album, making vegetarians and animal-rights activists out of more than a few of their overcoat-wearing devotees. The most straight-ahead of the Smiths' albums in terms of production, MEAT IS MURDER is a rootsy effort, driven largely by Johnny Marr's lush acoustic guitar arrangements. The album, however, is far from folky. While the frenetic pace and dolorous lyric "Rusholm Ruffians" and the gentle, haunting "Well I Wonder" have acoustic backbones, the blistering fury of "What She Said" and the cascading echoes of "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" are purely electric, and are exactly the reason behind the reverence with which Marr found himself being graced from here on. Morrissey takes a humorous stab at royalty (not his last by any means) over the quick shuffle of "Nowhere Fast." The album closes on an intense, epic note with the dramatic, compelling title track, a graphic anthem for the cause celebre of vegetarianism. SKU: 1003295

Ladies Of The Canyon
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Teressa Adams (cello); Paul Horn (clarinet, flute); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Milt Holland (percussion); The Saskatunes, The Lookout Mountain United Downstairs Chorus (background vocals). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. No longer the wistful folkie, Joni hadby now joined the late 60s rock fraternity through her association with Graham Nash. Her lyrics had acquired an originality, which she expanded on BLUE and FOR THE ROSES, but it was the quality of the songs that made them classics of the era. "For Free" was recorded by David Crosby and the re-formed Byrds, and CSNY turned "Woodstock" into a full-blown rock number. Joni's own definitive stamp remains on the much-covered "The Circle Game," the ecology-conscious "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Willy," her song for her then 'old man' Nash. SKU: 1002166

Lead And How To Swing It, The
Personnel includes: Tom Jones (vocals); Lol Creme (guitar, keyboards); Mike Campbell (guitar, bass); Lalo Creme, Stan Jones (guitar); Garry Hughes, DJ Battlecat (keyboards, programming); Simon Franglen, Guy Roche, Marshall Jefferson, Warren S. Campbell (keyboards); Michael Sanchez (Hammond organ); Owen Rossiter, Russ Kunkel (drums); Matt Rowlands (programming); Tori Amos, Jeff Lynne, Teddy Riley, Helen Andrew, Tessa Niles, Katie Kissoon, Bruce Woolley, Gardner Cole, AndreCymone, Mic Murphy, Dave Hollister, Levi Little (background vocals). Producers include: Trevor Horn, Flood, Alan Moulder, Andy Wright, Richard Perry. Engineers include: Steve Fitzmaurice, Thom Panunzio, Chris Potter. If the idea of an album featuring Welsh middle-of-the-road pop star Tom Jones announcing "T.J.'s in the house with phat beats from the streets" makes you run screaming from the room, then THE LEAD AND HOW TO SWING IT is probably not for you. On the other hand, if it sounds like a kitsch classic in the making, you're on the right track. This 1994 release, a kind of belated follow-up to Jones' surprisingly satisfying 1989 collaboration with the Art Of Noise on Prince's "Kiss," is Jones' rock & roll comeback. Thankfully, it's delivered with a winning sense of self-mockery. More importantly, the song choice is surprisingly apt, and the producers, including Jeff Lynne, Lol Creme and Trevor Horn, know what to do with the power of his still-remarkable voice. SKU: 1014937

Axis And Alignment
Chicago Underground Duo: Rob Mazurek (cornet, piano, electronics); Chad Taylor (vibraphone, guitar, percussion). Recorded at Soma Electronic Music Studios, Chicago, Illinois in Summer 2001. Doesn't Rob Mazurek ever slow down? You'd think it would be enough leading Isotope 217and making solo electronic records under the name Orton Socket, but no. This Chicago workaholic somehow also finds time to play in the distinctive and dynamic Chicago Underground Duo. Subsequent albums found the group expanding to a trio and then a quartet, but things are chopped back down to size on AXIS & ALIGNMENT, with cornet/keyboards man Mazurek accompanied only by stalwart percussionist Chad Taylor. As ever, the group mixes a variety of elements, from '60s-inspired free jazz tinged with very contemporary electronic touches, to more "new music"-oriented avant garde explorations that occasionally bear a touch of their pals Tortoise (the Chicago scene is nothing if not an incestuous one after all). Mazurek's post-bop trumpet lines meld perfectly with Taylor's warm, organic vibes work while the pair fill in the spaces with pointillistic synthesizers and elegantly undulating drums. Here's hoping Mazurek never tires. SKU: 1070160

Feeling The Space
Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band: Yoko Ono (vocals, piano); David Spinozza, John Lennon "John O'cean" (acoustic & electric guitars); Sneaky Pete (pedal steel guitar); Jeremy Steig (flute); Don Brooks (harmonica); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Kenneth Lee Ascher (piano, organ, Mellotron); David Friedman (vibraphone); Gordon Edwards, Robert "Babbit" Kreiner (bass); Jim Keltner, Andrew Smith, Rick Marrotta (drums); Arthur Jenkins (percussion); Something Different Chorus (background vocals). Principally recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York in September 1973 and live at The First International Feminist Conference, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1973. Includes liner notes by Yoko Ono. Digitally remastered by George Marino and Rob Stevens, Sterling Sound, New York, New York. One of Yoko Ono's finest solo albums, 1973's FEELING THE SPACE continues the militantpolitical charge of its predecessor, APPROXIMATELY INFINITE UNIVERSE. From the Yoko-as-Sphinx cover art to the plainspoken, angry songs within, FEELING THE SPACE is Ono's most overtly feminist album. The lyrics are surprisingly subtle and emotionally complex, from the painful openers, "Growing Pain" and "Yellow Girl (Stand By For Life)," through more strident tunes like "Woman of Salem," "Run, Run, Run," and "Angry Young Woman." The album finally explodes into the seething, defiant trio of "She Hits Back," "Woman Power," and "Men, Men, Men." The music is powerful rock with touches of funk and free-jazz courtesy of New York rockers Elephant's Memory. The CD contains two bonus tracks, "I Learned to Stutter/Coffin Car" and "Mildred, Mildred." SKU: 1015346

Very Best Of Sting And The Police, The
Personnel includes: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass); Cheb Mami (vocals); Andy Summers (guitar); Branford Marsalis (saxophone); Kenny Kirkland, David Sancious (keyboards); Darryl Jones (bass); Stewart Copeland, Vinnie Colaiuta, Omar Hakim (drums); Mino Cinelu (percussion). Producers include: The Police, Nigel Gray, Hugh Padgham, Sting, Kipper. During two decades in the music business, Sting has always been about genre-busting. The Police imbued their reggae-influenced brand of rock music with a truly literary lyrical sensibility, distancing themselves from the Tolkien-tinged meandering which tended to pass for "thoughtful lyrics" in the seventies. The ill-advised sci-fi garb of SYNCHRONICITY notwithstanding, they brought vibrancy, imagination, and intelligence into the dumbed-down world of arena rock. THE VERY BEST OF STING & THE POLICE represents their work with unquestionably classic cuts such as "Message In A Bottle," "Can't Stand Losing You," and "Every Breath You Take." On his own, Sting moved into the even headier realms, assembling a supergroup of young jazzers and further indulging the bookworm within. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and "Englishman In New York" display the mellower, calmer Sting. You want erudite? The album's only co-writing credit is "Russians," based on a little something by Prokofiev. Closing with the hugely successful Puff Daddy remixversion of "Roxanne," THE VERY BEST OF STING & THE POLICE provides an overview of his progression from schoolmaster to rock icon and back again. Boomer's Story
Ry Cooder spent the 1970s making a small pile of extremely cool records. One of them was BOOMER'S STORY. In 1972 Cooder was one of the hippest slide guitarists around. His singing, like hisrhythm chops and arranging skills, has always been funky and distinctive. His taste for all things groovy and American and his breadth of knowledge (and/or willingness to seek out the missing details when necessary) led him to arrange his albums around themes. BOOMER'S STORY leans on the music of the 1930s and 40s for its text, yet avoids becoming a mere period piece. Lopsided backbeats, horn parts, barrelhouse piano, and blues mandolin licks all go into the gumbo, and come out sounding just right. Skip James' "Cherry Ball Blues," the soul classic "Dark End of the Street" and the ballad "Maria Elena" all get instrumental treatment, with textures that range from the aching to the raucous. Cooder covers Sleepy John Estes' "Ax Sweet Mama," then gets Estes himself to guest on "President Kennedy." The sideman situation throughout is in excellent hands, with Randy Newman sitting in on piano and longtime Cooder associate Jim Keltner on drums. SKU: 1009601

Streetsweeper Vol.1, The [PA]
Personnel includes: DJ Kayslay, Aaron Hall, Scarface, Raekwon, Fat Joe, The Lox, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, Big Noyd, Black Rob, G-Dep, Craig Mack, Foxy Brown, Amerie, Nas, Baby, The Diplomats, Cam'ron, Eminem, Doo Wop, Tony Touch, DJ Clue, Funkmaster Flex, S&S, Brucie, Kid Capri, Angie Martinez, Duchess, Lady May, N.O.R.E., Wyclef. Producers include: Dr. Dre, EZ Elpee, The Alchemist, DJ Scratch. There is no story quite like thatof DJ-turned-acclaimed graffiti artist-turned mixtape king DJ Kayslay, who released his first widely distributed album THE STREETSWEEPER VOL. 1 in 2003. His career spans the history of hip-hop, incorporating all angles of the hip-hop world, and his debut reflects the breadth of his experience. The level of respect reserved for Kayslay on his crossover from underground distribution to major release is evidenced by the almost absurd collection of all-star talent present. After an opening track where the DJ steps in front of the mic, Kayslay lets you know what you're in for with "I Never Like Ya Ass," bringing together the unlikely grouping of Fat Joe, Raekwon, and Scarface, each delivering some of their most potent raps. And on it goes in a dizzying fashion with lyrical masters like Nas, Eminem, Killer Mike, 50 Cent, Noreaga, and Wyclef dropping science. The best producers, such as Dre, Scratch, and the Alchemist supply their knowhow, and there's a show-stopping battle between the kings of the mixtape game, featuring Funkmaster Flex, Kid Capri, and DJ Clue smack in the center. THE STREETSWEEPER is one doozy of a coming-out party for DJ Kayslay. SKU: 1083920

Pool It
The Monkees: Peter Tork (vocals, guitar); Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz (vocals). Additional personnel: Dan Sawyer (acoustic guitar); Mark Christian, Lou Natkin (guitar); Jim Thompson (saxophone); Andy Cahan (piano); Mike Egizi (keyboards, programming); George Hawkins, Davey Faragher, Dave Sutton (bass); Curly Smith (drums); Craig Ostbo, Roger Bechirian (percussion). Originally released on Rhino (70706). Includes liner notes by Harold Bronson. In 1986, The Monkees' TV show was resurrected on MTV, and the band went from being a rock-hipster joke to a well-respected example of classic '60s pop. A greatest hits collection, featuring three new tracks by Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, and a fullslate of reissues of the band's original albums all sold well, and a concert tour was a big success. And so three of the Monkees--Michael Nesmith declined to participate--went into the studio to record a full reunion album. The results were, surprisingly, not dire in the least. Choosing postpunk veteran Roger Bechirian (Elvis Costello, The Undertones) to produce helped keep the '80s-style slickness at manageable levels, and also improved the choice of covers--a version of Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World" is particularly inspired. Apart from a few missteps (though no more than on most of the group's '60s albums), not bad at all. SKU: 1009808

Jazz Workshop, The
Personnel: George Russell; Hal McKusick (alto saxophone, alto flute); Art Farmer (trumpet); Bill Evans (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Milt Hinton, Teddy Kotick (bass); Osie Johnson, Joe Harris, Paul Motian (drums). Recorded at Webster Hall, New York, New York on March 31, October 17 & December 21, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Russell. Though he has yet to become a household name, pianist/composer George Russell has made his mark on the jazz world. His book, THE LYDIAN CONCEPT OF TONAL ORGANIZATION, one of the first music theory books written by a jazz musician, was published in the early 1950s. His concepts were to influence such later jazz digressionsas the modal sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. THE JAZZ WORKSHOP is a reissue of a long-unavailable 1956 album (plus two alternate takes), and it features jazz legend Bill Evans on piano--Russell himself is solely a composer and arranger here. Russell's tunes are as fascinating as their titles: "Knights of the Steamtable," "Ye Hypocrite, Ye Beelzebub," "Round Johnny Rondo." Russell learned valuable lessons from such classical composers as Stravinsky, Bartok, and Stefan Wolpe in terms of composition and arranging, but this is no stuffy, awkward, heavy-handed attempt at jazz/classical fusion. The tunes are lyrical, with many wistful unison parts for trumpet, saxophone, and guitar, and have an elegant yet decidedly propulsive swing. Russell's music clearly stimulates the players to deliver their best. SKU: 1011769

Pup Tent
Luna: Dean Wareham (vocals, guitar); Sean Eden (guitar); Justin Harwood (bass, keyboards, trumpet, guitar); Lee Wall (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jamie Candeloro (mandolin, slide dobro) Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Mike Russell (accordian); Barrett Martin (vibraphone, marimba); Pat McCarthy (percussion). Though they began as a lower-case Velvet Underground, Luna has definitely progressed through the years. On PUP TENT, the band's sound incorporates country music, classic jazz bass riffs, and effects-heavy guitar. The album also betrays the influence of late-'80s/early '90s British pop bands like the Charlatans U.K., The Stone Roses, and Ride. Surprisingly, the collage of styles on PUP TENT holds together well. Instead of mixing together twenty genres of music within a single ten-second splice, Luna's explorations shift from one contemporary rock genre to another, creating just the right texture.
